tour meaning collins

French word of the week: tour

Welcome back to all of our French learners. Today we’re looking at the noun tour . While this word exists in English with the exact same spelling, it doesn’t quite sound the same – listen to the pronunciation in the audio clip below:

tour meaning collins

Now we’ll move on to the translation, but again, try not to compare it to the English word you already know. You might feel tempted to directly translate tour as ‘tour’ in English, and this can be one possible meaning (in the sense of ‘journey’) – for example, you might have heard of the Tour de France , the cycling race. But in French, as well as tour, this word can be translated turn , walk , ride , lap or tower . Something special about this noun is that it means different things depending on its gender .

  • As a masculine noun, le/un tour can mean turn, ride, lap or tour, among other things.
  • As a feminine noun, la/une tour can mean tower, tower block, or the castle piece in chess.

If you need some extra help, you can review our Easy Learning French Grammar pages on nouns .

We’ll start with examples of the feminine noun in action:

Notre hôtel était parfait ! Nous pouvions voir la Tour Eiffel de notre balcon. Our hotel was perfect! We were able to see the Eiffel Tower from our balcony.

Il y a plein de tours au quartier où elle habite à Hong Kong. There are lots of tower blocks in the area where she lives in Hong Kong.

monter en haut de la tour to climb to the top of the tower

Chaque joueur d’échecs a deux tours noires ou blanches. Each chess player has two black or white castles .

Now we’ll have a look at the masculine noun in everyday French. This version of the noun is a lot more common, as it often appears in set phrases:

faire le tour de quelque chose to go/walk around something

faire le tour du monde to go/travel around the world

Voudriez-vous faire un tour du lac ? Would you all like to go on a stroll around the lake?

C’est mon tour . It’s my turn .

à chacun son tour one at a time; everyone gets a turn

À qui le tour ? Whose turn is it?

faire demi- tour to do a U- turn

Les élections présidentielles se dérouleront sur deux tours avant les résultats. The presidential elections will unfold over two rounds before the results.

You might have noticed in the final example that tour has an ‘s’ on the end, making it tours . This is to make the word from a singular noun into a plural . However, if you see tours with a capital letter, Tours , then you might need to reconsider the translation. This is the name of a city in France, located in the Loire Valley.

That’s all we have for this week. Now it’s your turn to take what you’ve learned and build it into your French vocabulary. See you next time!

Danielle Collins discussed her choice to retire from professional tennis at the end of this season, expressing her desire to return to a 'normal life' away from the constant travel and public attention.

The 30-year-old Collins, who is a former World No.7 and Australian Open runner-up, announced last month that 2024 would be her final season on the tour. On Tuesday in Abu Dhabi after an opening-round, straight-sets win against Naomi Osaka, she elaborated on her decision.

“Earlier this year around the holidays I decided this would be my last season,” she said. “I’m feeling really happy about it and looking forward to it.

Why Danielle Collins became a powerful advocate for financial literacy

“I haven’t been on tour that long, compared to some of the other players. Because I did go the college route, so I didn’t really start on tour until I was 22. In some ways it seems like it was just yesterday when I started playing and in other ways it seems like I’ve been out here for an eternity.”

Collins wins last nine games to defeat Osaka in Abu Dhabi

Collins noted the travel component of the job has presented challenges at times, especially for a player coming from a consistent home life.

“I certainly love my job and it’s been a rollercoaster of fun emotion,” she said. “And there are also times that aren’t as fun. But just like with anything, you have that.

“At this point I feel like I’m ready for the next chapter, and I’m really excited about it. I needed to have an end date and it gives my family and friends the ability to come support me in some final tournaments. I think that will be really special.”

Collins won the NCAA championship twice while playing college tennis for University of Virginia after transferring from University of Florida.

She turned pro in 2016. Three years later, she revealed she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. In 2021, she underwent emergency surgery to treat endometriosis.

Collins said her health problems did not play a factor in her decision to retire.

“Even though I have had a lot of challenges previously, this is the best that it’s been,” she said. “I finally got to the point where I’ve been able to manage it well and been able to take care of my body, manage around the cycles and all of that fun stuff. I just feel like I’m getting to that stage in life where I’m ready for something new.”

In Australia last month, Collins expressed her desire to have children. With many players now returning to the tour after becoming mothers, does Collins see herself making a comeback?

“I mean never say never,” she said. “I certainly love tennis and enjoy what tennis offers to my life and so I’d never say never. But it’s hard to really envision that right now. I guess I’m more just kind of focused on getting over that final hurdle.”

While her mind is set for now, Collins insists she is treating this season with the same discipline and seriousness she has adopted throughout her career. Currently ranked 71, she is looking to move up the charts to avoid some of the daunting draws she has been handed this campaign (her second round in Abu Dhabi against Elena Rybakina will be her fourth consecutive main-draw match against a Grand Slam champion). She’s also signing up for tournaments she typically enjoys so she could play them one last time.

“At this point, I could have easily not come over here and not played tournaments and just focused on the US swing or just getting ready for French Open or something like that,” Collins said.

“But I really wanted to get more matches and compete. I’m still playing, so it’s not over yet. At some point this year it will be, but not right now.”

Collins has yet to reveal her post-retirement plans but dismissed the idea of managing other athletes when it was brought up in her press conference.

“I think probably something away from sports is probably more likely, but I don’t know exactly what,” Collins said. “And I think there will be a period of time where I step away from the public eye a little bit because I did like my normal life a lot.”

Phil Collins Wrote “In the Air Tonight” After a Painful Divorce

Chris Stapleton and Snoop Dogg recorded an energizing new version of the iconic song for Monday Night Football , but the meaning of the 1981 original is much bleaker.

But while the new cover is meant to build excitement for viewers watching the big game, the circumstances behind the original are much bleaker and more personal. Collins, now 72, actually wrote the song following his failed marriage to his ex-wife Andrea Bertorelli. Its dark lyrics and moody drum sounds reflected the anger and sadness the musician felt leading up to and following their 1980 divorce .

“In the Air Tonight” became a career-defining hit for the longtime Genesis frontman, but Bertorelli feels the song has reinforced an inaccurate portrayal of their relationship and the circumstances leading to their split. Although Collins has justified his emotional response, even he has never offered a full account of the song’s meaning.

Collins and bertorelli’s relationship.

Long before they became jilted lovers, Collins and Bertorelli were actually childhood sweethearts. According to The Daily Mail , the pair met at age 11 as performers in the Barbara Speake Stage School in West London. They began dating as 14-year-olds and had an on-and-off relationship, until Bertorelli moved to Canada with her parents when she was 18.

Collins, meanwhile, became a drummer for Genesis in 1970. When the group made a tour stop soon after in Vancouver, Canada, he reunited with Bertorelli. She and her daughter from another relationship, Joely, moved to Great Britain to live with Collins, and the two married in 1975 at age 24.

But, according to Bertorelli, their happiness didn’t last long. She said in a 2015 interview that when Collins took over as Genesis’ lead vocalist that same year, his focus completely shifted to his career and away from his family. Within two days of leaving the hospital after she gave birth to their son, Simon, in 1976, Collins left to begin an extensive world tour with the band.

Bertorelli said she was miserable with Collins away, and the couple began arguing regularly. She accused the singer of raging at her over the phone and in front of their children. Eventually, she says, she admitted to Collins she had a brief affair with a man who was helping one of her friends renovate a house.

Soon after, she and their children moved to Vancouver to stay with family. Despite a last-ditch effort by Collins to save the relationship by moving to Canada, the two never got back together and divorced in 1980. Bertorelli, who is now 72, moved back to the United Kingdom to start her new life.

Writing “In the Air Tonight” and Its Impact

Genesis took a break at the conclusion of their 1978 tour, which allowed Collins and bandmates Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks to work on solo projects. For Phil, that meant writing songs, including “In the Air Tonight,” that would turn into his 1981 album Face Value .

Collins has admitted his breakup with Bertorelli influenced the song but has denied its dark content represents anything specific. “I’m not quite sure what the song is about, but there’s a lot of anger, a lot of despair, and a lot of frustration,” he told Rolling Stone in 2016. “Nobody knows what the song is about, and I kind of like the mystery.”

Listen to “In the Air Tonight” on Spotify , Apple Music , or Amazon Music .

Regarding the lyrics, Collins told the music outlet Mix he began singing, and the words spontaneously came out. When he listened back to the vocals, he wrote them down on a piece of paper.

Whether this claim is entirely true, listeners began forming conspiracy theories—particularly about the song’s reference to a man drowning and the vocalist refusing to “lend a hand.” One urban legend states that Collins witnessed a real-life incident in which a man was drowning and an onlooker refused to offer help. The singer told Jimmy Fallon that never happened in 2016.

The song’s famous drum sequence occurred somewhat by accident. According to American Songwriter , producer Hugh Padgham had the studio soundboard’s talkback system on in reverse to talk to Collins when he started drumming. “The most unbelievable sound came out because of the heavy compressor. I said, ‘My God, this is the most amazing sound!’” Padgham explained. He and a maintenance person modified a circuit that same night so the effect could be sent to the tape recorder.

Collins once compared the sound to “barking seals,” but the gated reverb technique became a major element of the song’s appeal. The track released in January 1981 and appeared on his debut solo album.

“In the Air Tonight” peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the song’s staying power has been undeniable. The track is referenced in rapper Eminem ’s 2000 hit “Stan,” and boxing star Mike Tyson humorously mimicked Collins’ drum break during a scene from the 2009 comedy movie The Hangover .

Meanwhile, critics have lauded the tune’s impact on music—particularly the drum arrangement—with Rolling Stone placing it among the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2021.

“He’s still playing the victim”

phil collins holding a microphone and singing

Collins has continued to insist that Bertorelli’s unfaithfulness instigated their breakup. In 1981, he memorably placed a paint can next to his piano during a performance of the song on the British television program Top of the Pops —a clear reference to her affair.

In October 2016, the singer revealed he and Bertorelli no longer spoke to each other. “She’s got a little bitter in the last 10 years. And she’s convinced that I’m not telling the truth. People have different perceptions of what happened and their reasons for what happened,” he told the Irish Independent . “I’ve not been spiteful. I’ve owned up.”

Collins has since been married and divorced twice, ending his relationships with Jill Tavelman in 1996 and with Orianne Cevey in 2006.

Meanwhile, Bertorelli is adamant her relationship with Collins was already broken by the time of her affair and that he had his own trysts. Still, “I hated what happened and suffered from immense guilt and shame,” she told The Daily Mail about her extramarital encounter. “It wasn’t something I wanted to do. I think I just wasn’t coping very well and made a bad decision, which I regret. But my relationship with Phil didn’t end because of it... It was a symptom of a bad marriage—not the reason the marriage ended.”

All the while, Bertorelli has felt the singer used her personal life as a marketing tool to sell records and, more recently, books. Soon after the release of Collins’ memoir Not Dead Yet in 2016, she announced she began libel proceedings to counteract “wholly false statements about myself and my marriage to Phil.” Any outcome from the lawsuit has never been revealed publicly.

“He’s made a lot of money singing about the breakup of our marriage and his heartbreak, and he’s never stopped to consider my feelings or those of our children. All these years on, he’s still playing the victim, and I think it’s time he stopped,” she said .

No matter where the truth lies, there’s no doubt their relationship will forever be tied to the iconic song.

A Deeper Look at the Meaning Behind “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins

by Catherine Walthall April 4, 2022, 11:00 am 1 Comment

“In The Air Tonight” is eerie, haunting, goosebump-inducing even. And who doesn’t love that iconic drum fill?

Videos by American Songwriter

Released in January 1981, “In The Air Tonight” was written by English drummer and singer/songwriter Phil Collins with co-producer Hugh Padgham. It was his first-ever solo single after serving as the lead vocalist for the rock band Genesis for several years. Safe to say, Collins had picked up a thing or two while performing with the Genesis rockers.

“In The Air Tonight” was also the lead single off of Collins’ debut album, Face Value . The song eventually charted at the number two position on the U.K. Singles chart and number 19 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

But what is it about this song that makes it so striking?

The origins.

“In The Air Tonight” sounds haunting because, well, it is slightly haunted. Collins wrote this song after he and his first wife Andrea Bertorelli divorced, and the singer was haunted by the emotions that came rolling in afterward.

“I wrote it after my wife left me,” Collins told Rolling Stone in 2016. “Genesis had done a tour that was far too long. She said to me, ‘We won’t be together if you do the next tour.’ I said, ‘I’m a musician. I have to go away and play. Just hold your breath when I’m over there.’ Then Genesis toured Japan. When I got back, she said she was leaving and taking the kids.”

After this jarring separation, Collins turned to songwriting. “One day I was working on a piece in D-minor, the saddest [key] of all. I just wrote a sequence, and it sounded nice. I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I’m not quite sure what the song is about, but there’s a lot of anger, a lot of despair, and a lot of frustration,” he said .

The lyrics.

Distraught and heartbroken, Collins sang his emotions into existence. The lyrics almost seem as if they were divined—they just spilled out of the singer. In an interview with Mix , Collins explained that he simply “opened [his] mouth and [the lyrics] came out.” He then recounted how he didn’t even write the lyrics down at first, but rather penned the lyrics on a piece of scrap paper after hearing his vocals back.

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord And I’ve been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lord Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord

The drums and the drum solo/fill.

“In The Air Tonight” is the reason why we love playing the air drums. Just past the 3:40 minute mark, the anticipation of the track drops as the iconic drum fill changes the pace of the song. It’s a descending 10-note tom-tom break that changed Collins’ career.

“Barking seals, that’s what it sounds like,” he said in a recent interview .

Logistically, though, the drum fill was created using the recording tool talkback.

“One day, Phil was playing the drums and I had the reverse talkback on because he was speaking, and then he started playing the drums,” producer Padgham explained. “The most unbelievable sound came out because of the heavy compressor. I said, ‘My God, this is the most amazing sound! Steve, listen to this.’ But the way the reverse talkback was set up, you couldn’t record it. So I had the desk modified that night. I got one of the maintenance guys to take the desk apart and get a split output of this compressor and feed it into a patch point on the jack field so I could then patch it into a channel on the board. From there, we were able to route that to the tape recorder.”

In addition to the fill, Collins used a drum machine pattern from a Roland CR-78 drum machine. “You could eliminate certain sounds and program bass drums and snare drums, so I programmed a bass drum part into it, but basically the rest of it was already on there,” Collins said .

Urban legend.

Due to the dark lyrics, many urban legends and myths have bubbled up over “In The Air Tonight.” Particular scrutiny has been paid to this verse for lore musings:

Well, if you told me you were drowning I would not lend a hand I’ve seen your face before my friend But I don’t know if you know who I am

Theories emerged online about how Collins wrote this song somewhat autobiographically after witnessing a man drown. Some even guessed that he refused to save a drowning man after discovering that man had an affair with his wife. The legends began to loom so large that they were injected into popular culture. In one instance, Eminem included a reference to the “In The Air Tonight” myths in a verse from his song “ Stan “: You know the song by Phil Collins, “In the Air of the Night” / About that guy who could a saved that other guy from drowning / But didn’t, then Phil saw it all, then at a show he found him?

Collins has repeatedly denied these myths simply stating , “Nobody knows what the song is about, and I kind of like the mystery.”

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

WASHINGTON, DC —  Today, Wednesday, May 1, 2024, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) and Mike Lawler’s (NY-17) bipartisan legislation — the  Antisemitism Awareness Act  — overwhelmingly passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. This legislation, which is supported by thirty of the country’s leading Jewish groups, requires the Department of Education to use the widely-supported International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism in Title VI discrimination investigations. The IHRA definition has been used by the U.S. State Department over the last three administrations. By codifying this definition into law, Jewish students will be more protected from antisemitic discrimination, harassment, and threats. This bill will give investigators at the Department of Education a clear framework and the proper tools for  identifying and evaluating antisemitism, helping resolve some of the 137 active Title VI investigations and hold harassers accountable. The bill passed the House by a vote of 320-91.

Video of Gottheimer’s remarks on the House floor can be found  here .

“We cannot stand idly by as protesters call for the death of Jews on college campuses and across the country,”  said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) . “When I spoke at Columbia last week, I told administrators that we need deeds, not words to protect Jewish students. This bill is a critical step to take the action we so desperately need to stand against hate.”

“What is happening at Columbia, at Yale, at UCLA, and so many other schools, is reprehensible and alarming,”  said Congressman Lawler (NY-17).  “When people engage in harassment or bullying of Jewish individuals where they justify the killing of Jews or use blood libel or hold Jews collectively responsible for the actions of the Israeli government – that is antisemitic. It’s unfortunate that needs to be clarified, but that’s why this bill is necessary.”

Gottheimer’s remarks as prepared for delivery:

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of my bipartisan bill, the Antisemitism Awareness Act, to ensure that we’re standing up to the Jew hate that’s spreading like wildfire on campuses across our country. I’m proud to lead this legislation with my fellow Problem Solvers Caucus member, Congressman Lawler.

As we are voting, in real time, our country’s universities are experiencing a tidal wave of antisemitism. Protesters have targeted Jewish students, haranguing them with awful Jew-hating insults and cheering on Hamas — a barbaric foreign terrorist organization that murdered Americans on October 7 and still holds five living Americans hostage, including my constituent, Edan Alexander.

I saw these protests up-close and personal at Columbia earlier this month. I’ve heard the sickening comments, comparing Zionists to Nazis, promising a redux of October 7 “a thousand times over,” and calling for resistance “by any means necessary” and “intifada revolution.” Intifada is used to call for violent uprising against Israel. These protests embolden Hamas, America’s enemy. In fact, they’ve put out a statement lauding protesters as “the leaders of the future.”

Let me clear up any confusion: this bill protects the First Amendment. It allows criticism of Israel. It doesn’t allow calls for the destruction or elimination of the Jewish state. Even more, our universities have a Title VI obligation to stamp out harassment on the basis of race, color, or national origin.

Colleagues, we cannot stand idly by as protesters call for the deaths of Jews on college campuses and across the country.

This bill will require the Department of Education to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance or IHRA definition of antisemitism when carrying out Title VI investigations. IHRA’s antisemitism definition is the most widely recognized in the world, used by 36 states. It condemns traditional hatred and the ugly, modern antisemitism that we’re seeing on campuses.

There is no excuse to vote against this bill. When it was first introduced in 2018, 50 Democrats and Republicans co-sponsored it, including members still in this body.

Right now, the Department of Education has 137 active Title VI investigations, some of which have been open for years. The bill will give investigators a clear framework to evaluate antisemitism and finally hold harassers accountable.

Don’t just take my word for it. Thirty of our nation’s leading Jewish groups back this bill. Under the last three administrations, the State Department has used the IHRA definition to monitor antisemitism worldwide. This bill takes a commonsense step to formalize the IHRA definition for our education system.

When I spoke at Columbia last week, I told administrators that we need deeds, not words to protect Jewish students. Colleagues, I’m making the same ask of you. This bill is a critical step we can take to stand against hate. I hope my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will join me in supporting this legislation.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I yield back.

Breaking Down All of the Ways Kendrick Lamar Attacked Drake on “Not Like Us"

Kendrick Lamar fired back at Drake (again!) on “Not Like Us.” Here’s a breakdown of every way he attacked Drake this time.

Kendrick Lamar has dropped his (checks notes) fourth Drake diss track in the last six days with “Not Like Us.”

Produced by DJ Mustard and Sounwave, Dot goes full west coast and makes a diss song that can be ( and already has been ) bumped in the club. Kendrick retreads some topics that he’s already covered, accusing Drake and his OVO crew of being pedophiles and pointing out that the rapper has a substance abuse problem, but he also adds new jabs about how The Boy collaborates with artists from Atlanta to give himself credibility, among other things. He also makes references to Drake’s diss “Family Matters,” which implies that he likely made the track (or at least finished it) this weekend.

This has been one of the most chaotic weeks in rap history. With another diss track to dive through, follow us down the rabbit hole as we break down all of the different ways Kendrick attacked Drake on “Not Like Us.”

Drake’s relationship with women

tour meaning collins

Accusations about Drake’s history with underaged women have become a recurring topic in Kendrick’s diss tracks, and he continues to find new ways to hurl these heavy claims at the Toronto rapper, including:

“ What's up with these jabroni-ass niggas tryna see Compton? The industry can hate me, fuck 'em all and they momma/ How many opps you really got? I mean it's too many options/ I'm finna pass on this body, I'm John Stockton ”

The opening bar could be Kendrick’s way of refuting Drake’s lyrics on “Push Ups” where he claimed that he “gets more love in the city that [Kendrick] from.” Then Kendrick throws a jab at Drake’s rumored age preferences when it comes to women. Dot says that he’d pass on these young women like he’s John Stockton, which is a double entendre about the legendary passer who holds the NBA record for most all-time assists (Stockton also played with Karl Malone, who reportedly impregnated a 13-year-old girl when he was 20 years old).

“ Say, Drake, I hear you like 'em young/ You better not ever go to cell block one/ To any bitch that talk to him and they in love/ Just make sure you hide your lil' sister from him ”

Kendrick brings back similar themes from “Meet the Grahams” when he said that celebrities should keep their daughters away from Drake. This time, he says that younger siblings should keep away as well. Warning Drake to stay away from “cell block one” could be Kendrick’s way of referencing how sex offenders are targeted in prison, while also calling back his bar on “Meet the Grahams” where he rapped that the Toronto rapper (and Harvey Weinstein) “should get fucked up in a cell for the rest of they life.”

“ Why you trollin' like a bitch? Ain't you tired? Tryna strike a chord and it's probably A-Minor ”

Kendrick is referencing all of the memes that Drake had been posting last month when he was trolling Dot to respond to him. Well, now Kendrick has relentlessly responded over and over. From there, he deviously sets up a double entendre with music note terminology to insinuate that the real “chord” that Drake is trying to strike is “a minor,” continuing to drive home the point he’s been making about the Toronto rapper’s rumored underage women preferences.

“ Fucked on Wayne girl while he was in jail, that's connivin'/ Then get his face tatted like a bitch apologizin' ”

Kendrick is implying that Drake was intimate with Lil Wayne’s girlfriend while Weezy was in prison, and then got his arm tattooed with the Young Money rapper’s face several years later in 2017 as a way to apologize. Wayne confirmed this rumor in 2016 in his Gone Til November memoir when he wrote, “I'm used to arguing with my girl on a daily basis, but finding out that she fucked Drake was the absolute worst thing I could've found out.” Then he confirmed it again in an interview not long after.

“ And your home, boy need subpoena, that predator move in flocks/ That name gotta be registered and placed on neighborhood watch ”

This line connects directly to the cover art for “Not Like Us,” which is a satellite image of Drake’s Toronto estate (The Embassy) with 13 pins that are commonly used to indicate where registered sex offenders are living. Kendrick is implying that Drake’s entire home needs to be registered in the sex offenders watchlist because of his accusations that the Toronto rapper and members of his OVO crew of being deviants. This comes after Dot rapped on “Meet the Grahams” that “The Embassy ‘bout to get raided, too, it’s only a matter of time.”

“ He a fan, he a fan, he a—/ Freaky-ass nigga, he a 69 God/ Freaky-ass nigga, he a 69 God ”

Kendrick appears to have made “Freaky-ass nigga” double as an acronym for “fan,” and then uses Drake’s “6 God” nickname against him by flipping the number to make it associated with the sex position. The bar could also be referencing rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, who in 2018 plead guilty to a felony count for use of a child in a sexual performance with a 13-year-old girl. This could also be an allusion to Drake’s song “9” where he raps, “Turn the 6 upside, it’s a 9 now,” with Kendrick implying that he’s now flipping the rapper (and the city) on its head with this diss track.

Drake’s OVO crew

tour meaning collins

Kendrick has been taking subtle shots at the members of Drake’s OVO crew on “Euphoria” and “6:16 in LA,” but he takes even more direct aim here, referencing them by name and calling out both Drake’s right-hand man Chubbs and artist/former bodyguard Baka Not Nice. He also creates a hilarious call-and-response at the end of the track, changing OVO to “OV-Hoe.”

“ Did Cole fouI, I don't know why you still pretendin'/ What is the owl? Bird niggas and burnt bitches, go ”

Kendrick seems to be saying that Drake did J. Cole dirty (perhaps referencing rumors that Drake wanted all three of them to be on “First Person Shooter”), before associating the OVO owl with “bird niggas and burnt bitches.” Using the word “foul” to double as “fowl,” he adds another layer to the bird jokes.

“ They tell me Chubbs the only one that get your hand-me-downs/ And Party at the party, playin' with his nose now/ And Baka got a weird case, why is he around? Certified Lover Boy? Certified pedophiles ”

Kendrick starts by using a play on words to call out Drake’s right-hand man Chubbs, who he says gets the women that The Boy doesn’t want, before accusing PartyNextDoor of having a drug problem. Then he addresses Baka Not Nice, who was arrested in 2014 for allegedly prostituting a 22-year-old woman, and later pleaded guilty to assaulting another 22-year-old Toronto woman in 2015. Kendrick then turns Drake’s Certified Lover Boy album title against him and calls his crew “certified pedophiles.”

Drake’s relationship with Atlanta

tour meaning collins

Dot dedicates the entire final verse to picking apart Drake’s relationship with the city of Atlanta and its major rappers, suggesting that he only works with these acts to gain something from them, whether it’s street credibility or to simply be more accepted in hip-hop culture, further portraying him as an outsider.

“ Once upon a time, all of us was in chains/ Homie still doubled down callin' us some slaves

These lines are in direct response to Drake’s opening bars on “Family Matters” where he spit, “Always rappin’ like you ’bout to get the slaves freed/ You just actin' like an activist, it’s make-believe.” Kendrick flips those sarcastic bars against Drake, saying that these sentiments prove his point on “Euphoria” that he is an outsider of the culture, as well as the jabs on “Meet the Grahams” about how Drake only embraces his Blackness when it’s convenient.

“Atlanta was the Mecca, buildin' railroads and trains / Bear with me for a second, let me put y'all on game/ The settlers was usin' town folk to make 'em richer/ Fast-forward, 2024, you got the same agenda ”

Dot gives a history lesson about how the city of Atlanta was built on the backs of slaves, comparing white settlers who exploited slave labor to Drake using Atlanta rappers (and their culture) to build his career.

“ You run to Atlanta when you need a check balance/ Let me break it down for you, this the real nigga challenge/ You called Future when you didn't see the club/ Lil Baby helped you get your lingo up/ 21 gave you false street cred/ Thug made you feel like you a slime in your head/ Quavo said you can be from Northside/ 2 Chainz say you good, but he lied ”

After breaking down Atlanta’s history, Kendrick accuses Drake of using his frequent collaborators from the A—Future, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Young Thug, Quavo, and 2 Chainz—to help advance his career. Future and Drake first collaborated together in 2011 on Hendrix’s “Tony Montana,” and Kendrick is suggesting that The Boy needed him to reach the club scene in the city. Lil Baby and Drake first worked together on Baby’s “Yes Indeed” and Kendrick accuses Drake of borrowing slang from him. Dot goes on to insinuate that Drake sought varying degrees of street credibility from 21 Savage, Young Thug, and Quavo, and received a false co-sign from 2 Chainz.

“ No, you not a colleague, you a fuckin' colonizer/ The family matter, and the truth of the matter, it was God's plan to show y'all the liar ”

Kendrick’s Atlanta history lesson comes full circle in the track's closing lyrics, as Dot once again accuses Drake of being a colonizer, similar to the ones who first moved into the city. Then he flips Drake’s “Family Matters” and “God’s Plan” song titles against him.

Teyana taylor stripping down at private nyc club ... star-studded attendees.

BTW ... sources close to the show tell us the guest list far exceeds Leo wasn't the only celeb in attendance -- with Colman Domingo , Glen Powell , Savannah James , Winnie Harlow , Kyle Kuzma , Joan Smalls , Vittoria Ceretti, Tyrod Taylor , Lena Waithe , Imaan Hammam , Michael Braun , and many more looking on.

Teyana Taylor stripped down her fashion choices Saturday ... and, we mean it quite literally - 'cause the glamorous star left little to the imagination during a sultry cabaret show!

The singer-songwriter pulled out her best moves at "The Dirty Rose" -- an exclusive burlesque show created and directed by Teyana at the Paradise Club at The Times Square EDITION Hotel.

We gotta say Teyana certainly kicked off her performance with a bang ... hopping down on the floor and repeatedly humping the stage in the risqué footage.

Check out the clip ... the hip thrusts are just the tip of the iceberg -- TT moves across the stage in the scandalous outfit, gyrating and dropping it low with backup dancers filling the stage behind her.

Another clip also shows a man who appears to be Leonardo DiCaprio ... which videos trickling in on social media seem to back up. He's got his trademark black hat on while sitting near Teyana and chatting up another woman.

Remember ... Leo and Teyana have been spotted hanging out in recent months -- having a ball of a time in pics taken at the WME pre-Oscars bash.

Sources with direct knowledge told us at the time there's nothing romantic between Leo and Tey ... and, given we see him getting cozy with a different woman during the party, it seems to back up what we've been told.

Anyhoo ... looks like Teyana threw one hell of a party for her famous friends -- and put on a show they'll never forget.
