Tower built at the end of the century by Pierre d'Aubusson to accommodate Djem, the son of an Ottoman sultan.

The Zizim tower was built at the end of the 15th century by Pierre d'Aubusson to accommodate Djem, the son of an Ottoman sultan. Nicknamed "Zizim", this prince lived for two years in Creuse before leaving, but he left his nickname to the tower. During the Second World War, the seven-storey tower was used as a prison for resistance fighters who left graffiti. Nowadays, his visit allows you to walk up the 99 steps that lead under the magnificent oak roof and discover with the help of illustrated panels testimonies of the resistance, documents on the Order of Malta and the Prince, etc. Near the tower is a castle built in the 12th century by the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. Widely transformed over time, it now houses the Town Hall. Its austere architecture reflects the spirit of the soldier-monks. There are two beautiful towers: the Lastic Tower and the Staircase Tower.

Z izim, fils du Sultan Mehmet II

Djem est mieux connu en Europe sous un sobriquet, « Zizim » ou « Zizimi », « que les historiens rejettent car il ne repose sur aucune réalité historique, mais, quoique nous fassions, ce surnom est entré dans la mémoire collective. »

Selon Josselin Derbier. le grand maître Pierre d'Aubusson , confia le prince à la garde de trois chevaliers (dont Guy de Blanchefort et Charles Allemand de Rochechinard, commandeur de la commanderie du Poët Laval) , avec pour mission d’escorter Djem en France, sous le prétexte (entre autres) de lui faire rencontrer le Roi. En réalité, le prince est utilisé comme monnaie d’échange pour se prémunir des attaques de Bajazet sur Rhodes.

Le parcours de Djem est alors mouvementé (et pas toujours clairement établi). Les Hospitaliers l’amènent au port de Gênes (et non Villefranche sur mer comme certains l’ont prétendu). Mais sa route semble bien celle de l’Italie puisque Djem est conduit dans la commanderie savoyarde des Échelles. Selon les sources vaticanes, reprises par Kenneth M.Setton dans “The papacy and the Levant (1204-1571)” (in American Philosophical Society, 1976 - 512 pages), Djem demeure aux Echelles du 20 février au 27 juin 1483. A cette date, il est transféré à la commanderie du PoëtLaval. Son escorte sera désarmée au cours de l’hiver 1483-1484 et il sera emmené à Rochechinard, où il restera encore plusieurs mois.

Au printemps 1484, le prince est logé dans le château de la Bâtie en Royans (commune actuelle de Saint Laurent en Royans) propriété de la famille de Sassenage. C’est lors

de ce séjour que Djem s’éprendra de Philippe Hélène de Sassenage, fille du propriétaire. Après quatre ou cinq mois de séjour dans le Royans, il fut amené à Bourganeuf (Creuse), siège du Grand Prieuré d’Auvergne, où il demeurât jusqu’en 1488. C’est en cette année qu’il fut confié au Pape et emmené à Rome. En 1495 Charles VIII allant conquérir le Royaume de Naples demanda au pape, Alexandre VI Borgia, la garde du précieux otage en vue d'une hypothétique "croisade" contre le sultan en Grèce. Djem mourra à Capoue en 1495 dans des conditions mal élucidées (l'hypothèse d'un empoisonnement est probable mais non établie)

L’empire ottoman, au XVème siècle : le septième sultan Mehmet II, conquiert Constantinople, en 1453. Très cultivé, parlant de nombreuses langues, aimant les sciences, les arts et les lettres, il eut sept épouses, une fille et quatre fils : Mustafa, Bayezid ou Bajazet (1447-1512), Cem (prononcer Djem en turc) (14591495), et Korkut.

En 1480, Mehmet II, se considérant comme le souverain de Rhodes, exigea des Hospitaliers, maîtres de cette île, qu’ils lui versent un tribut annuel de deux mille ducats. L’Ordre, dont le Grand Maître était Pierre d’Aubusson , refusa et prépara l’île à soutenir victorieusement le siège imposé par Mehmet II en 1480. Mehmet II assassiné le 3 mai 1481, ses fils Bajazet et Djem se disputèrent la succession sur le trône. Battu lors de deux batailles par Bajazet, Djem se refugia à Rhodes où il demanda asile au Grand Maître des Hospitaliers.

Accueilli à Rhodes le 29 juillet 1482, avec tous les honneurs dus à son rang, Djem logea à l’auberge de France. Après de nombreuses tentatives pour se « défaire de Djem par le fer ou le poison », Bajazet négocia avec le Grand Maître d’Aubusson l’éloignement de son frère en Europe afin que l’on gardât le plus loin possible de son empire ce frère qui contestait sa légitimité et menaçait son règne. Djem, otage de prix, devint un objet de convoitise et sa « possession » permit aux Chevaliers de conclure un traité de paix avec l’empire ottoman. Le sultan s’engagea, en outre, à verser une forte somme chaque année pour l’entretien du prince en Europe. Un historien de cette époque , Nicolas Vatin écrit : « En dehors de l’intérêt financier de l’accord, c’était une victoire psychologique qui allait donner à l’Ordre un lustre incontestable. »

Nombre d’écrivains ont conté les aventures extraordinaires de ce prince ottoman.

L’errance du fils de « Mehmet le Conquérant » avec toute sa suite, à travers la Méditerranée puis l’Europe, son importance stratégique pour l’Occident chrétien face à l’expansion ottomane et sa mort mystérieuse, avaient de quoi solliciter les imaginations et enflammer les esprits . Son idylle

avec la fille de son geôlier, Philippe Hélène de Sassenage, compléta la légende. D’autant plus

que cette famille prétendait descendre de la fée Mélusine ...

Zizim apparaît aussi dans la pièce de Victor Hugo, Lucrèce Borgia, 1833: Acte 1, partie 2, scène

2 : "Rappelle-toi la manière dont Alexandre VI a fait disparaître du monde le sultan Zizimi, le frère de Bajazet." Et "Quant au frère de Bajazet, son histoire est curieuse, et n'est pas des moins sinistres. Le pape lui persuada que Charles de France l'avait empoisonné le jour où ils firent collation ensemble ; Zizimi crut tout, et reçut des belles mains de Lucrèce Borgia un soi disant

contrepoison qui, en deux heures, délivra de lui son frère Bajazet." Et plus loin à la scène 4 : "Le

saint père avait promis à Charles VIII de France la vie de Zizimi, sa sainteté n'en a pas moins fait

mourir Zizim.". Il apparaît aussi sous le nom de Zizimi dans la Légendes des Siècles de Victor Hugo.

Enfin, Zizim aurait été le commanditaire de la célèbre tapisserie, aujourd'hui au Musée de Cluny : La Dame à la Licorne : "Elles auraient été commandées par le prince Zizim, ou Djem, fils de Mahomet II et frère de Bajazet, alors prisonnier à Bourganeuf, dans la Creuse, qui les aurait fait exécuter pour la dame de son cœur. « Selon les uns, le portrait de cette belle serait celui d'une esclave adorée dont Zizim aurait été forcé de se séparer en fuyant à Rhodes; ... [selon d'autres], ce serait le portrait d'une dame de Blanchefort, nièce de Pierre d'Aubusson, qui aurait inspiré à Zizim une passion assez vive, mais qui aurait échoué dans la tentative de convertir le héros musulman au christianisme».

La légende des tapisseries de la Dame à la licorne prenait ainsi, dans l'imaginaire occidental, le relais de la légende de la vierge et de la licorne. Dès 1884, Edmond du Sommerard, dans un supplément à son catalogue du musée de Cluny, détruisait cette trop belle histoire, et reconnaissait, sur les bannières et les écus des tapisseries, les armoiries d'une riche famille lyonnaise, les Le Viste. La belle légende inventée par George Sand sut pourtant résister à la cruelle histoire, avec autant d'opiniâtreté que la licorne médiévale avait résisté à la zoologie moderne. Jusqu'à ces dernières années, des ouvrages plus ou moins sérieux ont en effet continué à voir, ou vouloir voir, dans les tapisseries du musée de Cluny le cadeau d'un prince des Mille et une Nuits à quelque dame de France au teint d'albâtre. C'était sans doute le dernier avatar de la légende de la vierge à la licorne."

L’odyssée de Djem (selon les sources vaticanes)

Djem accoste à Villefranche sur Mer, sur les terres du Duc de Savoie Charles 1er, le 15 octobre 1482. Il est emmené à Nice où il reste 4 mois. Il est ensuite transféré à Chambéry, capitale de la

Savoie, puis aux Echelles où il arrive le 20 février 1483. Il reste dans cette commanderie hospitalière jusqu’au 27 juin 1483. A cette date, il est conduit à la commanderie de Poët Laval en Dauphiné où il demeure deux mois.

Sa destination suivante est Rochechinard, château propriété du baron de Sassenage. C’est là qu’il s’éprend de la très belle Philippine « Hélène » de Sassenage. En février 1484, il part pour la Creuse, au château de Bourganeuf, centre hospitalier de la Langue d’Auvergne et domaine de Pierre d’Aubusson, Grand Maître des Hospitaliers. Mais le roi de France, Louis XI, demande son transfert à Monteil le Vicomte, propriété d’Antoine d’Aubusson, héros du siège de Rhodes et frère du Grand Maître.

Après deux mois à Monteil, Djem part pour Morterolles (commanderie du diocèse de Limoges), probablement en mai 1484. En juillet 1484, il est transféré à Boislamy (Creuse), appartenant à Antoine de Blanchefort, où il reste deux ans environ (l’un des accompagnateurs de Djem, de Rhodes vers la France, était Guy de Blanchefort, frère du précédent). Il retourne au château de Bourganeuf en juillet 1486, où une tour (la fameuse « Tour Zizim) a été construite pour l’accueillir.

Après de longues et délicates tractations entre le roi de France et la Curie Romaine, et malgré la pression de « La Sérénissime » (Venise) et le projet de mener la lutte contre la puissance ottomane à partir de Buda (Hongrie), Djem doit rejoindre Rome, à la disposition de la papauté.

Mais les Hospitaliers, dans la perte de leur atout–maître, vont acheminer Djem lentement vers cette destination. Partis de Bourganeuf le 10 novembre 1488, Djem et ses gardes embarquent à Lyon le 5 décembre pour rejoindre le sud par le Rhône. Après Avignon, ils arrivent à Toulon le 11 février 1489 pour embarquer sur la « Grande Nef du Trésor », flanquée de deux grands navires de l’Ordre. Après 10 jours d’attente de vents favorables, Djem et ses gardes hospitaliers quittent le

port le 21 février 1489, après sept ans de pérégrinations en Savoie et en France. Les équipages débarquent à Civita Vecchia le 6 mars et entrent dans Rome le 13 de ce mois. L’expression « Tous les chemins mènent à Rome » serait-elle issue de l’histoire de Djem? Quelque jours plus tard, Pierre d’Aubusson est nommé cardinal en consistoire secret, non pas pour avoir défendu Rhodes et la Chrétienté ,mais pour avoir livré Djem à la papauté.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
