Thailand's famous beach resort town of Pattaya has developed a colorful reputation over the years. Located less than 200 kilometers from Thailand's capital city of Bangkok, it's a convenient place to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea.

Pattaya has drawn tourists and expats from all over the world ever since US soldiers "discovered" the once-sleepy getaway destination during the Vietnam War. Since then, Pattaya's profile has steadily increased, and it is now one of the most popular beach destinations in Southeast Asia.

The sprawling park at Nong Nooch (pronounced "nung nut") Village offers a variety of activities for all the family. Walkways wind among colorful themed gardens, including a topiary garden; 17th-century French garden; European Renaissance garden; and species-specific gardens featuring plants like tropical palms, succulents, and bonsai.

As with all of Thailand's impressive wats (temples), Wat Yansangwararam (known as Wat Yan) offers insight not only into Thai design and architectural traditions but also into the society's values. Surrounded by sprawling palm-studded gardens, the temple was dedicated to King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1988 to commemorate the 42nd year of his reign.

Precious Buddhist relics are housed in the main complex, and on the right-hand side of the path leading to the temple is a lake with impressive Chinese pavilions, filled with antiques and artifacts. Wat Yansangwararam's shrine stands on a hill, reached by a flight of 299 steps lined with Naga snakes.

This 18-meter-tall golden statue of the Buddha looks peaceful and relaxed perched atop the wooded Pratamnak Hill south of Pattaya. Climb the steep stairs, adorned on both sides with golden Naga snakes, to see the statue up close and admire the several smaller Buddhas surrounding it.

Billed as "the biggest and best water park in Thailand," Ramayana Water Park offers an exhilarating day out for travelers of all ages, with 21 different water-themed rides. A riot of colorful, serpentine slides spiral around the park, including a heart-stopping freefall and more gentle slides for the little ones.

The first and only floating market in Pattaya, this bustling hive of commerce is divided into different sections selling merchandise from the four major areas of Thailand. Souvenirs, arts and crafts, and clothing are among the many items sold here, and it's also a great place to indulge in some exotic cuisine; you can try everything from scorpions to crickets and crocodile meat.

A great way to explore the markets is to rent a boat. Unlike more authentic floating markets, you have to pay for admission here. Your ticket gets you more than just a boat ride, however. For a slice of local life and succulent fresh seafood, head to the fish market in the small town of Naklua, about a ten-minute taxi ride north of Pattaya. Vendors sell fresh-caught seafood at bargain prices and barbecue it for you on-site.

You can also buy fresh fruit and other locally sourced foods, and several good restaurants are also in the area. A group taxi is the most cost-effective mode of transport, so make some new friends while lounging at the beach and make an outing of it together.

This bustling Friday to Sunday market runs between 5 and 11pm and attracts both locals and tourists. While there are other markets in Pattaya, the ones in the city center tend to charge more, so it's worth hopping on a tuk-tuk to get to Thepprasit. There are both indoor and outdoor stalls here, but the indoor part of the market is by far the largest and most impressive.

As with most Thai markets, there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to the way the stalls are set up, with sellers offering hot food standing next to those selling electronics or T-shirts. To get the best deals, you'll have to walk the entire length and width of the market and practice your haggling skills.

Be on the lookout for copied designer items and dodgy products, and instead focus on paper lamps, authentic souvenirs, and surprisingly cheap silk clothing.

Known as Buddha Mountain, Khao Chi Chan is a limestone hill with the world's largest Buddha image carved right on it. The golden carving of a sitting Buddha measures 109 meters tall and 70 meters wide, and takes over most of the side of the towering rock.

Created in 1996 as both an homage to the king and as a place for local Buddhists to visit, the image was cut into the stone using guided laser technology, then inlaid with gold leaf.

A tranquil garden with a small lake, paved paths, and a number of water pools filled with lotus flowers add to the beauty of the place. You'll find a few vendors and a small visitors center here, but in general, it's a place for worship and to relax surrounded by beautiful scenery.

The mountain is located just 15 kilometers outside Pattaya and not far from Jom Tien beach. While in the area, you can visit the Viharn Sien temple and museum, which houses a beautiful collection of bronze statues, cultural and religious artifacts, and a number of archeological finds.

Most travelers visit Pattaya for the lively entertainment venues on Walking Street and the sun-soaked beaches. Whenever people think of Pattaya they immediately think of ladyboys, risqué shows and drunk tourists. This does not even begin to touch upon the many things that this city in Thailand has to offer. Pattaya is a place that has beautiful temples and beaches but it also has so many activities to get involved in that it is impossible to get bored.

There are a large number of expats living in Pattaya which has led to the city changing over the years, but this has only led to an increase in wealth being brought into the city, with the increased wealth business men have seen an opportunity to create attractions that appeal to holiday makers which is why Pattaya is one of the enjoyable places to stop at for a few days.

With so much to do let’s get started to the top things to do in Pattaya :

1. Party The Night Away In Walking Street

When it comes to the sights and the sounds that you experience in Walking Street you will be amazed, no other street in Thailand even comes close (despite what the tourist guides may tell you.) Walking Street is 500m long and as the name suggests there are no vehicles allowed in the street after 6pm. The street as well as many side streets are full of bars, nightclubs, go-go bars, restaurants and beer bars. During the day the road is almost deserted but when darkness falls the neon lights, loud music and an army of girls hit the streets.

2. Relax Yourself At Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden

If you are interested in flowers, trees and landscaped gardens this is a great place to spend a peaceful afternoon. The garden covers a space of 2.4 Square kilometers and have some of the most beautiful flowers in the world. The gardens have won many awards for their designs and will continue to do so because of the excellent condition the garden is kept in. It is not just flowers and trees though, there are also over 670 species of orchid and even an elephant talent show.

3. Experience The Pattaya Floating Market

There are various floating markets In Thailand but this one in Pattaya has something different about it. The actual name of the market is the ‘Four Regions Floating Market’ the reason for this is that the market is split into the four regions of Thailand, The north, northeast, south and central. Each section of the market sells products that represent that part of the country. Not all of the stalls are floating, some are in boats which move around the canals and some are stilted properties that stand at the sides on the banks. To experience the best of the market you should hire a small boat and discover all that is on offer.

4. Become Part Of The Art At Art In Paradise

This is no ordinary art gallery, instead this gallery takes the normal art gallery concept and turns it on its head. At Art in Paradise you become part of the artwork by a series of optical illusions and other clever tricks. The gallery is set up perfectly so you can take pictures in such a way that it looks like you are crossing an old bridge or flying over the dessert on a magic carpet. The building is split into ten sections and houses over one hundred pieces of art. It is great fun for children as well as adults and should be on any to-do list.

5. Amaze Yourself At Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!

For those not in the know Ripley’s Believe It or Not is a chain of museums that show the visitor strange facts about the world we live In, most of these facts you would have no idea existed. This museum in Pattaya is home to over 300 items split over ten different subject areas. You will find a 1937 Jaguar that doubles as a motorboat as well as a replica of the Titanic made from a million matches. There is so much to do that it will take you an entire day, especially if you get lost for hours in the infinity maze. When you are finished with the museum and maze you still have the Tussauds Wax Works and the 4D Moving Theater to explore.

6. Climb The Hill At Wat Phra Khao Yai

Wat Phra Khao Yai is also known as Big Buddha Hill, it is referred to as this because it is the biggest Buddha in the region, it stands at 18 meters tall and sits about 100 meters above sea level. When you get to the top of the hill and stand next to the Buddha you can see Pattaya beneath you and Jomtien Beach if you look outwards. As well as the Buddha there is a temple complex as well which has incense burning all day long as well many bells. The temple is still used to this day so expect to see monks and praying locals.

7. Go Ziplining At Flight Of The Gibbon

Not strictly in Pattaya but half way between there and Bangkok sits Flight of the Gibbon, a complete adventure for the whole family. An excellent opportunity to have a lot of fun whilst taking in some beautiful views of the jungle. The course is three kilometers long and consists of twenty two zip-lines as well as two abseiling stations. With an impeccable safety record this is the one place in Thailand where you should feel completely safe whilst doing something you would not do back at home.

8. See The Buddha Engraving At Khao Chi Chan

Khao Chi Chan or Buddha Mountain as English speakers refer to it is the biggest engraving of Buddha in the world. The Limestone hill that has the Buddha engraved on it used to be an active site for the construction industry before it was closed down. In 1996 a laser was used to etch the carving into the rock as part of a celebration for His Majesty the King of Thailand’s 50th year on the throne.

9. Go Back In Time At Anek Kusala Sala

Originally built to build friendships between the Chinese and the Thai’s Khao Chi Chan is a museum showing over 300 pieces of Chinese artwork, most of the pieces are brass and bronze statues of historical figures from various deities including Buddhist and Taoist. Split over the two floors the second floor has some much larger statues, the most noticeable being the Shaolin monks that have been created to depict various martial art poses. You can see statues of dress makers, fortune tellers and liquor sellers which tourists often place one baht coins on.

10. Have some lunch at Mum Aroi

In the fishing village of Naklua sits a rather delightful restaurant called Mum Aroi, the restaurant itself sits right beside the sea and serves up a fantastic variety of seafood. As you eat your dinner in this busy restaurant you can gaze out over the water and watch the old fishing boats bob up and down on the waves. Popular with expats and locals the restaurant is quite large and normally very full in the evenings. For a relaxing evening with a glass of wine and a gentle sea breeze few places can live up to Mum Aroi.

Sitting at the top of a forested hill between South Pattaya and Jomtien is a giant Buddha statue known as Wat Phra Yai, The statue has its origins at a time when Pattaya was just a small fishing village, and a long way away from the world Pattaya finds itself in now. 12. Volunteer At Pattaya Orphanage

Founded nearly fifty years ago Pattaya Orphanage has continued to do good works for the less fortunate. The orphanage was founded by a priest called Father Ray in the 1970’s when a local gave their child to Father Ray as they were unable to look after the child themselves. Word soon spread among the people and so the orphanage had its beginnings. Originally the children were ones born as a result of the US military being in the area during the Vietnam War, now the children are from misfortunate mothers who suffer from drug abuse, poverty or HIV/Aids. You can either sponsor meals at the orphanage or completely give up your time and volunteer for extended time periods.

13. Spend A Day At Koh Larn

Sitting seven kilometers away from Pattaya is the island of Ko Larn, boats leave Pattaya several times a day for the island and are always full of tourists eager to explore somewhere new. The island is only small (4km long and 2km wide) but there are six different beaches to see, each beach having its own unique personality. Ban Amphur is a quiet fishing village that happens to have a beautiful beach with gorgeous sand and lots of palm trees. Every part of the building both inside and out has incredibly detailed carvings that need to be seen to be believed, the building itself is still a work in progress which some say will never be finished. Each year in March Pattaya holds an annual music festival, musicians from all over Asia fly in for the event which lasts three days and is set over several different stages. This representation comes in the form of shops and stalls selling souvenirs, fruits, food, art, handicrafts, postcards and clothing as well as regular cultural shows and demonstrations.

Some of the 114 vendors do indeed float, selling their wares from traditional boats and canoes. The rest are built into a sturdy stilted village, with covered walkways and stout bridges connecting them.

Big Buddha Temple

The so-called Big Buddha Temple of Pattaya certainly deserves its name, being the biggest in the region at 18 meters in height. Positioned nearly 100 meters above sea level, the statue watches over Pattaya and Jomtien Beaches from its position on the hill dividing both.

Known locally as Wat Phra Khao Yai, the temple complex around the highly detailed golden seated Buddha creates a reflective mood in its many visitors, thanks to its many bells, burning incense, numerous smaller statues and impressive views over the area. Not just a tourist attraction, the site is an active temple, with locals frequently visiting to pray.

Pattaya water parks

Pattaya water parks are among the best things to do in Pattaya for families. Pattaya is home to a choice of outstanding water parks, including the largest in all of Thailand, with dozens of slides and rides between them. 

The biggest and best, including Ramayana Water Park and Columbia Pictures Aquaverse (formerly Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark), are located just about 20 minutes away from Pattaya City. Each park has onsite restaurants and a range of helpful facilities for families.

Pattaya View Point

Pattaya View Point, also known as Khao Pattaya View Point on Pratumnak Hill, is the best viewpoint in the region. It’s the place to visit day or night to get that classic shot of Pattaya’s sweeping, crescent-shaped bay. Be warned though, this is anything but an insider’s tip, so expect to share your view with an almost ceaseless flow of package tours and the local traders who follow them touting cheap souvenirs and expensive refreshments.

This might sound off-putting, but the reality is tours will usually stop for 10 to 15 minutes and, once they have been called back to the bus, the viewpoint becomes quiet and peaceful – perfect for enjoying the stunning scenery.

Coral Island

Coral Island of Pattaya offers a blue sea and a long stretch of pristine beach void of high-rise buildings and away from the claws of civilization. Known as Koh Laan or Larn Island, it's the hub of a series of similarly idyllic little islands known as the Near Islands (being 'near' to Pattaya). It's the only one with any significant development like roads, restaurants and shops. This little piece of paradise beyond the hustle and bustle of the city is situated 7.5 km west of Pattaya Beach. It has long been an alternate retreat for those who have become jaded with Pattaya’s overdeveloped and overcrowded beaches.

Since the island is not so far away, visitors can easily go there in the morning, stay for a couple of hours and then come back to Pattaya Beach in the late afternoon. You can take the ferry to Koh Laan or a speedboat to any of the islands around it from Pattaya's Bali Hai Pier.

Art in Paradise

Art in Paradise is an interactive 3D art museum in Pattaya that takes the traditional assumptions of what an art gallery should be and completely ignores them. Instead, the art is brought to life and the visitors can become part of it through the use of optical illusions and playing with perspective.

Stand in the right position and take a picture from the right angle – all of which are clearly marked out for you – and it looks like you are flying a magic carpet over the desert, crossing a rickety bridge in the jungle, bathing with dolphins in the ocean or putting the finishing touches to famous masterpieces.

Khao Chi Chan

Khao Chi Chan or Buddha Mountain in Jomtien is the largest engraving of Buddha in the world. The gold-embossed image was carved out of the side of a limestone mountain with a laser. It's 130 meters in height and 70 meters across at its widest. The solitary limestone hill was once used to supply the local construction industry with materials. In 1996, to commemorate His Majesty the King of Thailand’s golden jubilee, the massive image was carved into the rock and then marked out in gold on the recommendation of the then Supreme Patriarch.

The area in which it resides – commonly known as “Silverlake” – is one of remarkable natural beauty, with a couple of other nearby attractions. The grounds in front of Buddha Mountain include a temple, with saffron-robed monks a common sight, so appropriate clothing is recommended.

5. Nam Tok Chan Ta Then Waterfall

Located 1.5 hours outside of Pattaya, the Nam Tok Chan Ta Then Waterfall is the largest in the province. If you love waterfalls then this is your best bet! 

The greenery is unending and the waterfall stretches for over 1 kilometer. So there’s lots to explore and many different locations to sit! Picnicking is customary here, and you can even hire a picnic mat!

6. Explore the Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden

Explore over 240-hectares of exotic tropical plants, waterfalls, and bizarre sculpture! While still keeping true to its Thai cultural roots, this renowned Botanical Garden draws inspiration from Western influences to create a great attraction. As well as a full day of exploring,  you can watch the cultural performances that display traditional Thai dancing and history. 

Visit the mini-Stonehenge, topiaries, and multiple waterfalls that make the Botanical Garden an ideal oasis away from the crowded metropolis . Hire a rowboat and take in the views from the water with a picnic. We haven’t even mentioned the Dinosaurs yet…

7. Defy Gravity at Upside Down Pattaya

Prepare to be both bamboozled and confounded at the Upside Down House. With it’s fully functional and fully furnished interior, everything from making a cup of tea to using the bathroom takes on an entirely new dimension here.

There is also a labyrinth maze on-site that was created specifically to confuse you. Luckily there are two entry-points, one which offers no chance of getting lost, the other more difficult and substantially more time-consuming. A must for those that enjoy a battle of wits! 

8. Explore China at Anek Kusala Sala

Less than 20 kilometers outside of Pattaya, an enormous collection of Chinese archives and artifacts awaits your attention. The product of the life’s work of a Thai man raised in China, his passion resulted in one of the finest collections of Chinese art outside of the great state. 

This temple and museum are also regarded as ‘Viharn Sien’, which translates to ‘House of the Gods’. The interior of the museum is astonishing, full of numerous and elaborate Chinese antiques and sculptures. The grounds cover just over one hectare and contain a lovely lake to sit by and enjoy lunch. 

9. Get Tipsy at the Silverlake Winery/Vineyard

You surely didn’t come to Thailand to laze at a wine-farm instead of lying at Jomtien Beach? Yet a 20-minutes away from this exact beach is Thailand’s top-rated winery and vineyards. Although the country is not famed for its grape production, you’ll find great produce here.

The great charm of the place, however, comes from the juxtaposition.  East and west collide here without so much as a though paid to combining them. Face one way and you’ll think you’re in northern Europe, face another and you’ll see northern Italy. 

This spectacular winery is adorned with lovely quaint gardens and wine-tasting in this lovely setting is recommended.

Pattaya is comparable to any other Thai destination where you are at some risk in the busy areas. Tourists are susceptible to opportunistic crimes, so watch your belongings at all times and simply be vigilant. You should pay particular attention to yourself on the walking street, and central beaches. Pattaya improves year by year but has earnt itself a reputation over the years for scams and pickpockets.

10. Party in Thailand’s Most Famous Walking Street

This neon-lit, illuminated pedestrian street plays home to parties and events whose reputations are known around the globe. The road on the Southern section of Beach Road, the Walking Street spans 1 kilometer and each building on this long road is a nightclub or bar! 

The other perk of this street is its close and convenient proximity to the ocean! So, if you want a retreat from the array of multicolored displays and lights, the beach awaits. Each bar/restaurant here is distinct with its own agenda!

Please be aware though, this reputation for debauchery, intoxication, and adult activities has been well earnt. This isn’t the kind of place you want to take the kids or go for a quiet drink.

11. Eat Dinner at the Sky 32 Rooftop

This bar may not sell alcohol, but it sure does offer a magnificent time. Being one of the tallest buildings in the city the views from here are exceptiona l – extending over the entire city and the Pattaya Bay. This is because it is on the 32nd floor of the iconic Grand Centre Point. 

The open plan of the rooftop area is ideal to sit during the night when the city ignites with its multitude of lights and skyscrapers. The gastronomical quality of the Rooftop Restaurant is commendable too, with reasonably priced tapas that stem from Thai and international cuisine.

12. Watch the Alcazar Cabaret Show

The Cabaret Show is the largest and most successful in Thailand, a country renowned for ‘ladyboys’ and transvestism. There are daily performances that take just over an hour. The theater wherein the performance takes place hosts an astonishing 1200 guests! This really is the broadway top-billing of the whole country.

The show mixes modern audiovisual techniques and technologies in the venue and to produce an exciting show. It’s not simply about spectacle though,  it’s a mix of dance and showmanship that captures and proudly flaunts the inimitable energy of Thailand’s Ladyboy and LBGTQ communities. This guarantees you to be wholly entertained and satisfied.

13. Watch the Sunset at View Mare Beach Front Bar and Restaurant

15. Tan and Swim in Jomtien Beach

Located 3 kilometers outside of Pattaya  this beach is ideal for those seeking relief from the city.  The beach is adorned with cleaner waters than that of the inner-city beaches, as well as fewer crowds. 

Watersports are plentiful and on offer to visitors. For those who feel like being less active, seaside massages are also an option, these obviously come at a cost. 

It spans 6-kilometers of a tropical tree-lined beach. The water is less exploited than the other beaches in and around the city. If you feel peckish, there are vendors that stroll around the beach-line selling small seafood goodies.

16. Chumphonket Udomsak Monument

This sacred landmark in Pattaya is a site whereby locals come to pray, therefore please act respectfully when approaching it. You have to walk up a moderately steep hill and upon your arrival at the top you’ll be granted one of the greatest panoramic views of the city. 

Not only are the views impeccable but there is also a bustling temple at the top. This temple and statue pay homage to Admiral Krom Lunag, the founder of the Thai Royal Navy. 

You can reward yourself after the workout of ‘hill-climbing’ by visiting the small cafe that is situated on the top of the hill too.

17. Take a Photo with the Largest Buddha Statue in Pattaya’s Region

Another religious site, the Big Buddha Temple is one of Pattaya’s most popular destinations. This Temple is also situated on the peak of Pratumnak Hill and features a massive 18-meter tall golden Buddha figure. The figure is introduced by a stunning stairway that is accompanied by large dragons. 

Once at the top, you’ll be soothed by the scents of burning incense and find smaller Buddha statues.  What’s more is that the view from the top is extensive of the entire city and Jomtien Beach.

21. Khao Chi Chan Buddha Mountain

We know, there are so many Buddhas to see in Pattaya. But this one is special. It includes a golden engraving right into a limestone hill. 

Its size is exceptional, with a height extending over 100-meters and a width of roughly 70 meters. But don’t be fooled, this is no ancient or historic site! 

Rather, modern technology has endowed the mountain’s face with computing software that lasered the image into it after which gold was used to illuminate the outline. The nature surrounding the mountain is also noteworthy and should be explored too, with lots of calm spots to unwind and enjoy the birdsong.

22. Buggy Kart in the Thai Countryside

Begin your day by exploring the Nong Nooch Botanical Gardens. This extensive garden will take some time to roam around, so eat breakfast before and head there early.

They allow a maximum of 300 visitors per day, and ticket distribution starts at 6:00 AM, with one ticket per person. Once you have your ticket, you can head to the embarkation point at Khao Ma Chao Pier.

The island boasts beautiful and private beaches, divided into five sections: Tien Beach, Laem Phrang Beach, Toey Beach, Kruat Beach, and Kaloong Beach. However, visitors are only allowed to swim at Tien Beach and Kaloong Beach. The water around Samsao Island is crystal clear, and the sea has a mesmerizing shade of blue. 1. Admire the flowers at Nong Nooch Botanical Garden

Koh Larn has 6 different beaches; each one has its own unique vibe. 6. Admire the Buddha Image at Buddha Mountain (Kao Chee Chan)

With a striking appearance seen from miles away, the 130-meter-high Buddha Mountain is one of the most interesting places to visit in Pattaya.

Created in 1996 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King Rama IX’s reign, the image of the Buddha on the mountain was carved using laser technology and then inlaid with gold leaves. The process was done entirely at night so that the light of the laser could be seen more clearly.

Kao Chee Chan also has some pleasant landscaped gardens and lotus ponds, giving an air of quietude about the place.

7. Visit Pattaya’s Big Buddha

Wat Phra Khao Yai or “Big Buddha” certainly lives up to its name. Being the biggest Buddha in the region, it stands at 18 meters tall and is located 100 meters above sea level, watching over Pattaya.

Once you’re at the top of the hill next to the Buddha, you will see Jomtien Beach. The temple complex houses the highly detailed golden seated Buddha, creating a peaceful mood for visitors thanks to its numerous bells, burning incense, and several statues.

How to get to Pattaya and around

Pattaya is situated southeast of Bangkok, and from there, it is quite easy to reach, yay! The trip from Bangkok to Pattaya takes about 2 hours, depending on the traffic.

Our destination is connected to Thailand’s capital through Highway 3 and Highway 7.

If you don’t feel like  renting a car (check the prices here) , you can go from Bangkok to Pattaya by bus (check the air-conditioned ones for some comfort). Buses depart every half hour from early in the morning until almost midnight. They leave from the Eastern (Ekkamai), Northern (Mo Chit), and Southern (Sai Tai Mai) bus terminals.

Hotels (especially in the Khao San area) and travel agencies offer transport by minivan, which is more expensive but has the advantage of picking you up at your hotel door.

There are also taxis and private cars doing the route, but the prices can go as high as 1500 baht per person. The cheapest option is to get the train that departs from Bangkok on weekdays between 6h45 and 6h50 and enjoy 3 hour’s trip.

Even though it’s a pretty big place, getting around Pattaya is not that complicated. • a local bus called Beach Bus covers Pattaya’s tourist places and tickets cost only 30 baht;

• songthaews are among the cheapest and most practical transportation methods in Pattaya;

• tuk-tuks are also popular, but remember to negotiate the price before you hop on;

• motorbike taxis (the operators use colorful vests) are another cheap option to go around, though you might not feel that safe sometimes;

• car and/or motorbike rental are alternatives if you have an international driver’s license;

Thailand reconsiders $8 tourism tax as phuket, pattaya face overtourism.

As Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has vowed to make 2025 a landmark year for tourism, secretary-general of the Federation of Thai Tourism Associations (Fetta) Adith Chairattananon said a white paper that the federation will present to the government will include solutions to prevent overtourism, which was seen in Thailand before the pandemic.

According to Adith, with a projection of 40 million tourists, major destinations in Thailand like Phuket, Samui, and Pattaya are on the verge of facing overtourism.

During the high season, Phuket had already witnessed traffic congestion and water shortages, while its international airport ran out of available slots for airlines, he said.

He also said one of the key strategies is to attract tourists from major hubs to the country's secondary cities that offer plenty of potential attractions and space to accommodate a significant flow of tourists.

There should be incentives for airlines who are keen to operate direct flights to provincial airports such as U-tapao, and those serving Khon Kaen and Krabi, he suggested, adding that the move will alleviate congestion among gateways such as Phuket Airport or Suvarnabhumi Airport, and will also help create regional business opportunities.

Besides, relevant authorities should accelerate connectivity between airports to inner cities too.

For instance, the lack of public bus access from U-tapao Airport to Pattaya city discourages new airlines from operating flights as the current situation is not convenient for passengers.

Meanwhile, Vice President of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) Surawat Akaraworamat said the government should reconsider collecting the 300-baht tourism fee to help fund tourism development as the plan and all related preparations have now been finalized.

Surawat said the essential funds will benefit infrastructure development in second-tier provinces to attract tourists and improve attractions that have deteriorated due to overtourism.

He said the 300-baht fee will help tourism authorities receive a larger budget.

He noted that a tax of only 300 baht will not discourage foreign tourists from visiting Thailand as some parties have raised as a concern since the fee is inexpensive compared to some other nations.

Thai authorities have reconsidered measures to tackle the overtourism issue in the context that other countries in the world have made moves.

Last week, Amsterdam city banned building new hotels in the city while residents of Spain's Canary Islands called for a limit on tourist numbers because they were affected by rising housing costs.
