Vodice is a popular tourist resort just north of Sibenik in North Dalmatia , with good accommodation and a number of beaches.

Getting to Vodice

If you’re flying in to reach Vodice from outside of Croatia, either Split or Zadar airports would be the best choice for you. Vodice is actually roughly halfway between the two; however, Split Airport may be slightly better as there’s more flights to there from the UK and Europe. See our Getting to Split and Getting to North Dalmatia pages for details of flights to these two airports.

If you’re travelling to Vodice from elsewhere in Croatia, the town has good connections to other places by bus. A good number of the coastal buses that run up and down the coast stop here. Or, if you’d like more options, you can always get a bus to nearby Sibenik and then another on to Vodice – Sibenik to Vodice is only about 20 minutes.

Sightseeing in Vodice

The town is home to a number of churches including the 18th Century Parish Church of St Cross , and relics such as the 16th century Coric Tower . Okit Hill , above Vodice, offers great views and is also the site of Our Lady of Carmel Church ; originally built in the 17th century, it was destroyed twice (most recently in the Homeland War). The current version was designed by architect Nikola Basic who also designed the wonderful Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun in Zadar .

The Aquarium and Museum of Maritime Tradition has of course tanks of fish, as well as antique amphorae, old scuba diving equipment and models of ships.

Vodice’s pretty harbour is a lovely place to spend some time, whether taking a look at the little shops or indulging in a cold drink or a sweet treat at one of the many cafes and restaurants.

Sibenik is also easily reachable by bus or ferry, and would be a great choice for a day out to enjoy the many fine sights there.

Beaches include Hangar Beach and Male Vrijule Beach, both close to the centre of town and both with good facilities. Both are pebbly, although Male Vrijule has an artificial lagoon structure (pictured below) which is both shallow (good for kids) and which also raises the water temperature slightly.

Vodice Beach

Another popular beach is Srima, just outside of town. Another pebble beach, it is also quite shallow and suitable for children.

Eating and Drinking

Restaurant Sky is situated on the 10th floor of the Hotel Olympic Sky and offers wonderful views over the town and out to sea. A smart choice for an evening meal or a glass or two of wine at the bar.

Konoba Tri Piruna is a reasonably-priced, friendly place that is one of the oldest restaurants in the town. Traditionally styled, its a great place to go for meat and fish dishes.

Konoba Mediterano is another excellent choice to try out some fish and seafood dishes, and is in a great location by the harbour.

The town is home to Hacienda , one of the better known clubs in Croatia, as well as Opium Club and Exit Club .

Other things to do in and near Vodice

Visiting the islands of prvic and zlarin.

The tiny but beautifully green islands of Prvic and Zlarin are just off this part of the Croatian coast. Prvic has just 400 inhabitants; as quite a quiet island, it would be best visited as a relaxing day trip to try some of the beach options there. Zlarin is a slightly larger island (but in fact has a smaller population of just over 200) and is well known for its beautiful coral.

Island of Prvic

Both of these islands can easily be visited from Vodice. There is a daily boat that sails a few times a day from Vodice to Sepurine and Prvic Luka on Prvic, then to Zlarin and then on to Sibenik. (So would also be a good way of reaching Sibenik…albeit quite a bit slower than by bus!) This route is run by Jadrolinija .

There are a number of road and mountain bike tracks in the region, making this a highly suitable destination for those looking for a bit of activity. The local tourist office site has a good guide to the different tracks .

Vodice is also highly suitable for diving. Contact Vodice Dive for more details.

Accommodation in Vodice

Vodice has a good choice of hotels – these include the smart four star Villas Arausana & Antonina , the Hotel Olympia Sky and the Hotel Miramare , all of which are on the beach.

There is also a great selection of apartment as well as holiday homes and villas – check out the selection on Booking.com .

You can find out plenty about the town and what there is to see and do on the Vodice Tourist Office website .

Vodice

The 10 best things to do in Vodice

Vodice is full of great things to do, with fantastic beaches, wonderful nature and history plus plenty for young people

Buzzing with nightlife and beach fun, for its relatively small size Vodice punches above its weight and is packed full of great things to do. Located 60 kilometres south of Zadar and just 10 kilometres from Šibenik , with great access to the rest of Dalmatia and its national parks, it’s a popular summertime destination for both families and a younger crowd. Vodice centres around beach and bar life, with late nights on the menu. Whether you choose to spend them in some of the town’s seafront restaurants, spirited nightclubs or at some of the world-famous music festivals that take place in nearby Tisno , is up to you. Here's a rundown of the best things to do in Vodice.

RECOMMENDED: 20 great things to do in Šibenik

Hit the beach

Hit the beach

Beach life is an essential facet of summertime in Vodice and the town has one to suit any taste. Plava plaža (Blue beach), which stretches westward from the small outcrop of land immediately west of the town centre (Punta) all the way to Tribunj, is great for families with younger children. Holding a Blue Flag status for the cleanliness of its waters, this pebble beach extends into the sea at an extremely low gradient, making it perfect for even the youngest paddlers. The cafes and bars set back from the beach provide ample places to lunch or escape the sun. Heading in a southeasterly direction from the town centre is a collection of beaches most commonly known as Hangar beach. If you or your children are between the ages of 14 and 35, this is probably where you'll want to hang out. Chock full of people in that age range, it’s sometimes much more of a beach for people-watching and being seen than others in the area. The bars that fringe the beach also have a youthful vibe. If you're looking for somewhere a little quieter, follow Hangar beach until you reach Srima, with its two kilometres of spacious beach. Serviced by a resort, it offers plenty of room and peace, although the absence of shading pines means you have to be well prepared with sunblock and with a plan of escape if you get too hot.

Go wild for nature

Go wild for nature

Vodice is perfectly positioned for visiting two of Croatia's spectacular areas of natural beauty. Lying 20 kilometers westward off the coast of Vodice, Kornati National Park offers a topography like nowhere else on the Adriatic. A dazzling archipelago of islands that range from the barren and almost alien-like to the lushly green areas just south of Dugi Otok, Kornati showcase thrilling vistas of countless reefs, headlands, islands and bays. Around ten kilometres inland from Vodice, you'll find the series of interconnected lakes that are the centrepiece of Krka National Park . Here, consecutive runs of waterfalls, formed over thousands of years, gush across stubborn rocks to feed the lakes in the water's descent to the sea. The area is teeming with a variety of flora and fauna, including rare bird species such as osprey, short-toed eagle, golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle, lanner falcon, peregrine falcon, the Eurasian eagle-owl, European bee-eater and griffon vulture (if birds of prey are really your thing, the Sokolarski Falconry Centre near Šibenik will teach you more than you can remember and allow you to meet some of their guests close up). Although Krka is protected, you can still find a few smaller pools where swimming is still permitted (namely, Stinice, Remetić - Pisak and downstream of the Roška waterfall).

Party 'til the sun comes up

Party 'til the sun comes up

Because of its popularity with young people, Vodice has a vibrant nightlife that's tough to beat in any comparably small seaside town. If your afternoons by the beach slowly merge into cocktails by the bar, there are after-beach parties daily throughout summer, from 5pm - 9pm, at many of the bars along Hangar beach. Check out Hookah Bar on Blue beach, too. The town has many late-night options, both in the centre and along the beaches, which vary in vibe; some may blast dance music while others feature pop-folk enjoyed by many young Croatians. Live music is also a part of the season-long feature of Vodice street life, so don’t miss an after-dark wander. Located just 5 kilometres from Vodice, in Pirovac, Barbarella's is a 2000-capacity nightclub that’s frequently voted one of the best open-air clubs in the world. Throughout the summer, you can dance until the sun comes up to some of the most famous DJs on the planet. Though most of the club nights are tied to the music festivals happening nearby in Tisno, anyone can buy a ticket at the door for a single night out. Just two kilometres out of Vodice, Hacienda is another alfresco club. Popular with Croatians, it plays more mainstream music that’s better suited to the tastes of locals. It consequently draws a young and much less international audience than Barbarella's.

Eat local, eat well

Eat local, eat well

You're not going to run out of food options in Vodice, with quick snacks available from the bakeries, several fast food outlets and of course ice cream or pancakes you can grab to go and walk along the waterside. Among the most distinct fast food options is Sandwich Lab, in the centre, which elevates the humble butty to something most memorable (you can sip on a craft beer here too, while you eat). For a sit-down lunch, pick one of the taverns, known locally as konoba. Konoba Rustika has stellar seafood options, while Konoba Tri Piruna is known for its meats. Konoba Roki is tucked away, but worth finding for the ambience and food. Konoba Guste has a reputation for grilled meats, including steaks, though the prices are closer to what you'd expect for an evening meal. Dinner options include Karmelski Dvori, which is a kilometre and a half inland, but worth the trip for its exceptional steaks, both beef and tuna. Bistro Guloz is quite rustic and informal, but the food is near faultless, has a healthy bent and caters well to vegetarians. Arausa is a restaurant that specialises in seafood, which arrives simply but well presented. If you really want to push the boat out, a trip to the Michelin-recommended  Pelegrini  in Šibenik will satisfy any foodie.

See the sea from a different perspective

See the sea from a different perspective

It's almost impossible to get bored of swimming in Vodice's waters, but if you want to check out the sea from a different perspective, there are opportunities aplenty. Kayaking is available in town, perfect for exploring beaches and the nearby islands of Logorun and Lukovnik, which face Tribunj. Perhaps even better is the kayaking trip you can take from the inhabited Prvić island, which directly faces Vodice, and has a gorgeous shoreline. Divers can check out sunken ships, reefs and even aircraft in the nearby seas, available on diving excursions offered by several places in Vodice. Note though that diving is not a year-round pursuit in Croatia. If you want to head out into the vast, blue unknown, you can take a day trip to go deep-sea fishing. The largely sedentary pastime can become a flurry of excitement in an instant if you manage to snag one of the huge tuna, wild seabass or swordfish that live in offshore waters. Boat hire is also available for a more leisurely cruise.

Immerse yourself in history

Immerse yourself in history

From the evidence of early agricultural endeavours and Christian worship to that of the long-held defence against the invading Ottomans, Vodice has several points of interest for anyone keen on history. The small Church of St. Cross, built in 1402, is located in the middle of the tiny peninsula marking the start of the Blue beach. In the town centre, a moment's walk from the marina, the parish church of St. Cross is a few hundred years younger and impressively adorned in the Baroque style. Do go inside, as the altar and its surrounding altarpieces are impressive, featuring frescos of the Holy Family, the Heart of Jesus and saints Vinko the Martyr and Stanislav Kostka. Its close neighbour, the Čorić Tower, is hidden a little down a backstreet, but this fortified tower dating back to 1533 will catch your eye due to its distinct appearance. Unmissable in the town centre, the Monument to the Fallen Soldiers of WWII (main picture) is a classic example of Communist-era concrete memorials. For more on local history, you should take the short trip over to the island of Prvić where you can see St. Mary’s church (1461), the Baroque church of St. Rocco in Šepurine (1620), the summer mansion of local nobles, the Vrančić family, and a visitors’ centre dedicated to the family's famous son, Faust Vrančić, an inventor who died in 1617.

Soak up a distinctly Dalmatian vibe

Soak up a distinctly Dalmatian vibe

While much of Vodice's events calendar takes place outside of the regular tourist season, the town is especially welcoming to those who come to visit any of these. February is carnival time, with festivities throughout the month leading up to a colourful procession through the streets. One of the country's best mountain bike races takes place here in mid-April. Summertime visitors will see a great deal of entertainment on the streets in peak season, with live music playing a large part. Look out for evenings of traditional Dalmatian acapella singing, klapa , plus free classical music concerts throughout July, August and early September, as well as the annual jazz festival in late July. There are also several fishermen's evenings in the same period, that feature much savouring of locally caught seafood, as the crowds joyfully spill out onto the streets.

Pamper yourself with spa treatments

Pamper yourself with spa treatments

Vodice is known as a micro-centre of health and wellness tourism, with several institutions used to welcoming visitors, particularly in the field of dentistry. For a more restful and restorative experience, try Olympia Wellness & Spa, whose treatment menu includes bathing in warm waters scented with natural oils, a range of massages (including one with warm olive oil) plus sauna and jacuzzi. Hotel Punta's Spa Centre offers several wellness programmes; its facilities include an indoor swimming pool, three types of baths, beauty treatments and a fitness centre.

Get active

Want to work off some of the calories gained in last night's three-course feast? You're not short of options. There are several places in Vodice where you can rent a bike and hop on to explore neighbouring villages along the coast and the incredible views that lie between them. Head inland for a different vista, one of untamed nature; if you do, be sure to look out for the huge Lake Vrana which lies just past Murter on the coastal road to Zadar. Vertikala, an agency located near the start of Blue beach, offers organised trips of rock climbing, trekking and Nordic walking. In summer months, you can also go parasailing and rent various jet-skis.

Take a day trip that’ll be tough to forget

Take a day trip that’ll be tough to forget

If you want to be wowed by nature, put the aforementioned Kornati and Krka national parks at the top of your list. If you're more of a city type, Vodice is well-positioned for days trips to some spectacular places. 100 kilometres south, Croatia's second city, Split, is an incredible fusion of Roman history, classic Mediterranean architecture and contemporary living. Everyone should walk through its centrepiece, Diocletian's Palace, at least once. A nearer 40 kilometres south is the picturesque coastal town of Primošten, its postcard-pretty old town surrounded on all sides by the Adriatic, connected to the coast by a thin strip of land. Even closer, the city of  Šibenik  (pictured) has a delightful old town, ancient churches, atmospheric squares, an old fortress and the unmissable Cathedral of St James, plus a thriving bar and restaurant scene. 60 kilometres north of Vodice,  Zadar is a brilliant seaside city with kilometres of buzzing promenade, narrow alleyways and impressive contemporary monuments like the Sea Organ and Greeting To The Sun.

Vodice , a town of approximately 8,800 inhabitants, is located in the Dalmatia region, about 3 kilometers from Tribunj and 10 kilometers from Sibenik . Several times, this vacation pearl was chosen as one of the most popular coastal towns in Dalmatia . The tourist center is the old town together with the marina. A 4-kilometer-long promenade connects the town center with the beaches of the various vacation settlements. Especially in summer, there is always something going on, festivals are held, street artists provide entertainment, restaurants serve Dalmatian cuisine, and the beach clubs invite to party . Nevertheless, away from the hustle and bustle you can find many quiet spots, which are also well suited for families with children.

Translated, Vodice means “little water”, a name that dates back to the Middle Ages, when the coastal town with its springs supplied the surrounding area with water. Its history actually already goes back to the Roman rule over Dalmatia when the place was called Arausa. The town of Vodice was first mentioned in writing with the construction of the church of St. Križ in 1402, and even today you can discover several historical attractions in the charming center and old town of Vodice. A highlight is also the Dalmatian architecture , which gives the resort an extra dose of charm.

Among the absolute best attractions is the romantic old town with its many churches and stone alleys, the picturesque long waterfront promenade, the magnificent marina and of course the many fantastic beaches. But the surrounding area is also really worth seeing and has many exciting day trip destinations in store. We have summarized the most beautiful things to do in Vodice at a glance:

The Old Town of Vodice

One of the most important attractions in Vodice is the romantic old town . It forms the tourist center in summer and is, therefore, the heart of the holiday resort . The location directly on the small romantic fishing harbor is particularly stunning – a breathtakingly beautiful panorama that can be found on countless postcards! Be sure to visit

  • Čorić tower - built by the Fondra family from Šibenik in 1646. g. The living spaces and defense facilities were fortified by high defense walls since the tower was built during tumultuous times. The stone with which it was built was brought from island Brač. Today, the courtyard of Čorić tower is used as an open-air movie theater during summertime, however the tower is closed to visitors due to its poor condition.
  • Church of St. Cross - Gothic church built in the early 15th century, more precisely in 1402. In 1421 it was dedicated to St. Cross at which time it was also a parish church. It is famous for one precious detail, an old Romanesque-Gothic bowl attached to one of the columns, which is the only one of its kind in this part of Dalmatia. During summer the church houses modern art exhibits.
  • The parish church of St. Cross with a belfry – this church was built on the foundations of an old chapel in baroque style, the work of a Šibenik master Ivan Skok. The walls are decorated with windows from the same period and the interior enriched with a Baroque altar dedicated to St. Cross. The belfry is the work of a master from Dubrovnik called Vicko Macanović and was built over a 20 year span. The bell tower has two balconies (loggia) with two large windows on the lower one and three small windows on each side on the top one.
  • Church of St. Elijah the Prophet - this church was built in 1298 by the inhabitants of Pišće. Only in 1493 was it dedicated to St.Elijah the Prophet. A wall surrounds the church and it is assumed that a cemetery existed next to it. Today, a mass is held only once a year and only on August 20th.

Charming town of nightlife and beaches

Vodice is a small Croatian tourist destination located 10 kilometers north of Sibenik . It is popular among young visitors who look for lively places. The place features great hotels, beaches and nightlife. I went there for a visit on May 25, 2019.

About vodice, how to arrive in vodice, first impressions of vodice, things to do in vodice, vodice nightlife, accommodation in vodice.

The name "Vodice" was first mentioned in written papers in 1402., although it's known that people lived there during the Roman age. There are some pieces of evidence that life in that area existed in prehistoric times. "Vodice" in the Croatian language means "waters". It's named that way because of plenty of water sources. People from Sibenik used Vodice for their water supply since Sibenik was a dry place until it started to use river Krka as a water source. Throughout history main economic activity in the town was agriculture. Especially important was growing olives and vines. Today's main activity is tourism and locals are focusing most of their efforts to provide visitors with the best experience of their holidays.

I went by car from Sibenik. The trip was comfortable and it took me only 10 minutes to arrive there. I parked the car in the centre of the city, with the price of 0.8 euro/hour. There was plenty of space, but during summer you will need to be more patient while driving because the city will be more crowded. If you are not arriving by car in Croatia, you can take a bus from any of the major Croatian cities like Sibenik , Split , Zadar or Zagreb. The nearest airport is Zadar Airport.

Vodice is a cute lovely town. I could feel it immediately after leaving the car. It was a nice spring day and visitors were enjoying a walk on the coast. Others were having a coffee in one of the many coffee bars. The beaches were not yet arranged because it was too early for swimming, except for a few courageous spring swimmers.

Beach in Vodice

Vodice coast features all facilities necessary for the top tourist destination . There are all kinds of beaches: concrete pebble and sandy. The beaches I liked most are the Plava Beach and Olympia Beach . Both are located near the two biggest hotels in the town: Olympia and Imperial. I also liked the concrete beaches of special shape near the hotel Punta.

Vodice beach near hotel Punta

There are many other facilities such as fast food, coffee bars, restaurants, and services of renting chairs, jet skis, boats, bikes and motorcycles. Tourist agencies organize tours to Krka National Park and Kornati. The most interesting monument on the Riva is a monument dedicated to victims of the Second World War . It's also worth mentioning the parish church of St. Cross, which was built in Gothic Style. Find more info on Vodice's tourist board page

Monument to victims of Second World War

If you are a party animal, then Vodice should be among the top of your vacation choices . Season of nightlife starts in June, with CMC festival . It is the most famous festival of pop music in Croatia. July and August are months of intensive nightlife. Visitors can choose from many nightclubs in the town. I would point out a nightclub called Makina , which is usually the first night out destination. People gather there at 11 pm and stay until 1 am when the club closes and it's time to choose the next nightlife destination. The most famous late-night places are clubs Exit and Hacienda . Exit Club is located in the centre of the city, and Hacienda is located at the entrance to the town. You need to take a taxi to reach Hacienda. Hacienda is known as an elite nightclub featuring many popular Croatian and foreign singers and DJs. The place is not lively only during the night, but also during the day. You may notice that many beach bars have a DJ playing music all day long .

There are luxury hotels located a hundred meters away from the coast. The most featured hotel is Olympia with beautiful rooms and balcony with sea view.

Another highly popular hotel is Scala-d'Oro , located 500 meters from Hangar Beach, featuring luxury rooms and swimming pool.
