How to Travel the World During Medical School

Want to know how to travel the world during medical school? We spoke to six medical students who shared their experiences.

When you think of medical school, an image of white lab coats and stethoscopes probably comes to mind.

Would you believe me, however, if I told you that medical school can also include travel all over the country, and the world?

To share more about what it’s like to travel in medical school, we surveyed 6 students from many different states to see how they’re fitting trips into their busy schedules.

All together, they’ve visited over 15 countries in the course of their time in school. In this post, we’ll hear from them on how they’ve managed to keep traveling despite crazy schedules and intense exams.

Why Traveling is Important in Medical School

For medical students, traveling can be a way to unwind from the stressors of school, take on new challenges, and learn about different cultures. Instead of using travel as an escape, many students see it as a way to refresh.

“Med school is tough, and I don’t think I would have ever been able to make it through the first year of classroom lectures without getting away for a while,” says Rafael, a student from Texas.  

Kristin, also from Texas, states, “I think travel is a great way to push yourself and expand your comfort zone. You really have to problem solve when you’re thrown into a new situation in an unknown city or country.”

Some medical students took on a different perspective. “It’s a good way to relax and escape stress, refresh, and prevent burnout. When I travel I make it a point not to do work at the same time,” notes Zelun, a medical student from Connecticut.

Others have found that travel has gone hand-in-hand with their medical passions.

Peter, a medical student from Florida, stated that he was able to travel to “Port au Prince, Haiti…on a medical mission trip,” as well as, “Omaha, Nebraska to present…[his] summer research at a global health conference.”

Needless to say, the students we surveyed have taken a variety of trips all over the world.

Save Money By Thinking Ahead

One thing medical students learn during their frugal years in school is how to be resourceful. For traveling, the narrative is the same. Our interviewees cite travel rewards credit cards, cheap flight deals, and trip-specific cost cutting tricks as ways they save money for more travel.

“One of the best decisions I made in medical school was signing up for a travel rewards credit card,” says Rafael. Since getting his Chase Sapphire Preferred, he notes, he’s been on 4 international trips and several more domestic jaunts.

On saving money, Aish, a medical student from Maryland, states, “I tend to travel on a really low budget and go to countries where low budget traveling is possible.

The biggest costs are the airplane tickets, but luckily, I’ve been able to get some really cheap flights.” She also cuts costs while traveling by staying in hostels and cooking while traveling solo instead of eating out.

Zelun notes, “Plan far in advance so [you don’t] get shafted by flight tickets. Couch surf whenever possible. Scrounge free food whenever possible. But also have days to reward yourself—after all you’re in a new place and there are new [things] to try.”

Although she’s an advocate for booking ahead of time, Aish warns against being bound by over-planning. She states, “I’ve found that I’ve had the best experiences when I go with the flow without limiting myself to a set plan when traveling.”

Be Productive In Transit

Being in classes and constantly preparing for exams can be a huge barrier for medical students considering international travel. For Kristin, travel has challenged her to find small pockets of down time to study.

“When my boyfriend and I went to Banff ,” she explains, “we stayed…about a two hour drive from the main hiking area in the park. We spent those two hours in and out of the park each day listening to our lectures to make sure we kept up with classes.”

Kristin also notes, “I know it can be tempting to watch movies or sleep on the plane, but that is some prime quiet study/work time built in as well!”

Other medical students, like Rafael, take advantage of technology to keep up with their lectures. “I am fortunate that my medical school streams most of our lectures online… I have used this to take advantage of cheap flight deals and make my own ‘long holiday weekend.’

It also makes for a great story when you can say that you have streamed a lecture inside a geothermal greenhouse in Iceland!”

When You Have Time Off, Take It

The people we surveyed all agreed that students should always plan trips around their time off.

When we asked her about how she plans time off, Rachel, a student from Missouri, mentioned, “in medical school we have inflexible dates, so being flexible about the destination and planning/booking far in advance goes a long way.”

Often, medical students will need to take advantage of study days and holiday breaks to plan trips, instead of relying on vacation days like the rest of the corporate world.

“Plan ahead—if possible look forward in your year calendar and identify good times to travel,” Zelun suggests, adding, “Find out when are your exams and attendance required sessions. Ask upperclassmen which class sessions or activities are dispensable, and make plans to catch up on material you miss.”

Some students, like Aish, are more opportunistic. “I took [a] trip after taking the biggest exam of our med school career, called the USMLE Step 1.

We’re given ~10 weeks to study for this exam…so I took the exam early and took the rest of the time for a big solo adventure.”

How to Travel During Medical School: Final Thoughts

Traveling during medical school is a challenging but rewarding way to spend your time off. Although it isn’t part of a medical curriculum, our interviewees believed that travel would help them in the future.

“Not all learning takes place in a classroom. I believe traveling has taught me the empathy and patience needed to become a successful physician in the future,” muses Rafael.

Zelun agreed, adding that travel has given him new perspectives “on health disparity, diverse cultures, healthcare delivery in different parts of the country and in different countries, [and has helped him] gain ideas for how future career and lifestyle might mesh.”

Like many other students, Rachel believes in the value of taking some time away. “When you have a break,” she states, “just take advantage of it and take the time off. It can be tempting to think you should do research or something productive, but take the break.”

For those of you who think it’s impossible to squeeze in a trip between classes or rotations, think again.

Kristin states, “You’ll always be able to find reasons not to travel – no money, no time, need to study, need to sleep, etc. I’m not saying those aren’t valid reasons, I’m just saying you will have those same reasons for the rest of your life. So…book a ticket and go now. I have yet to regret any of my trips, even the ones I took right before exams.”

One thing every respondent noted, expressed quite beautifully by Aish, is, “My single biggest piece of advice to other medical students who want to travel is: there is no better time than now.”

Traveling before medical school provides an ideal option for students who want to explore more of the world, learn about different cultures, donate time abroad, or gain lifelong memories.

Becoming a doctor is a long and arduous journey, beginning with four years of medical school and followed by at least another four years of residency. While it is still possible to take time off or to travel in small doses in the summer, you won’t have the same chunk of time available to you for many years.

Whether you’re still considering travel or in the midst of making travel decisions, this guide will provide strategies and resources for making smart travel decisions. We’ll discuss the benefits of traveling before medical school, travel options, and how to successfully plan memorable experiences.

The Benefits of Traveling Before Medical School

Traveling presents a number of skill building opportunities that you will be able to use and continue building upon throughout your life. You’ll also gain a clearer understanding of people and cultures that are different from your own, which is an invaluable asset to have as someone who will be working with diverse people and communities.

And medical schools will take note of this too. School and residency programs are looking for globally-conscious prospective doctors who will enhance the diversity of their program.

In addition to these benefits, travel can create long-lasting memories and experiences you will cherish forever. You may even be able to speak about some of these unique experiences in future applications, essays, and interviews.

How to Make Travel (or Gap Year) Decisions

Decision making is tough, and as a premed or medical student, you’ve already had to make a few big, life changing decisions, including deciding to become a doctor , which major to pursue , and what schools you want to apply to .

The big decisions won’t stop there. What will you do with your summers in between medical school? What specialty will you pursue ? What residency programs will you apply to?

And the main question for today: What will you do with your time before medical school?

Traveling before medical school could occur between your final year of college and when you begin medical school in September. Or you may decide to pursue travel as part of a gap year before medical school.

If you’re struggling to make a big decision, you’re not alone, but at some point, you do have to take the plunge and decide one way or another.

The most important strategy for effective decision making is putting in the time to do your research. Spending ample time in the research phase will set you up for success and give you the tools you need to make the decision that’s best for you.

Go beyond simple Google searches and dig deeper by asking people you know who have been in a similar situation to yours. Reach out to other students, ask questions online, and go that extra mile to collect the information that will aid your decision making.

Another effective decision making strategy is to take some time away from the important decision. Give your brain a break to reflect and reset by meditating, exercising, spending time with friends or family, or working on a hobby you enjoy. Afterward, you can come back to the decision again to see if anything has changed. Has time away made you lean in a different direction? Do you have a new perspective now that you’ve been away from the problem?

Think you want to travel but aren’t sure what the right option is for you? Next, we’ll share some ideas that may pique your travel interest.

Donate Your Time Abroad

Donating your time abroad provides multiple benefits. You’ll get to experience a new part of the world while also adding to your philanthropic resume. Giving back to communities in need is looked at fondly by admissions committees, schools, and medical institutions. After all, it’s people and communities that you will be serving once you become a practicing doctor.

Another benefit to this type of travel is that it won’t cost you nearly as much as other types of adventures. Depending on the program, you may have a portion of your travel expenses paid for since you are donating your time. If you do need to pay for transportation and accommodation, these costs are generally lower than other touristy travel options.

Go Somewhere You’ve Always Dreamed Of

Is there a part of the world you’ve always dreamed of exploring? Are there specific countries you have on your bucket list? Did you see an exotic location in a movie once and think, “I have to go there one day?”

Life will continue passing by whether you pursue your dreams or not. And as an aspiring doctor, the next chunk of your life is going to breeze by pretty quickly. By the time you complete medical school and residency, you will be a new person with new dreams, goals, and desires. Plus, the career you begin as a doctor may not allow you to take time off to travel for quite some time.

If there’s somewhere you truly want to explore, before medical school begins is an ideal time in your life to do so. Take time to deeply consider what you value most in life and whether or not a specific travel experience will be something you will always regret not following through on.

Complete a Backpacking Adventure

For some people, choosing just one place to explore is too limiting. If you have a long list of must-see places, consider a backpacking adventure in which you jump from one city to another every few days or weeks.

The obvious location for a trip like this is Western or Eastern Europe since these countries are easy to travel between and aren’t placed too far apart. You can easily get from one country to another on an afternoon train or overnight bus, but keep in mind this type of trip will keep you on your toes the entire time. You’ll need to be careful about how much you pack, problem solve on the move, and organize many types of transportation and accommodation along the way.

You aren’t limited to Europe for this type of travel. Sections of Asia and Central America also have clusters of countries close together, making it easy to jump from one to the next.

Discover Your Cultural Roots

How connected are you to your personal ancestry? Do you have distant relatives or even close relatives that live in another country or city? Discovering or rediscovering your roots can help you feel closer to your family and where you come from.

This type of travel may help you solidify your own identity, or it may be an ideal chance to catch up with relatives you don’t see much or have never even met in person.

Visiting people who actually live in the city you are exploring will give you an inside look at what life is like there beyond the tourist attractions.

Go On a Road Trip

Do you want to travel but are tight on cash? With all of the costs of applying and going to medical school, it’s no surprise that many premeds don’t have additional means for long trips before school begins.

A road trip is an in-between option that won’t cost you as much while providing a much-needed escape. You’ll be able to spend time exploring unseen corners of the world, even if those corners may be a few to a few hundred miles away.

Pull out a map and put in some time researching to determine what’s within driving distance of your current location. If you’re headed to medical school in another state, a road trip may serve the dual purpose of providing an adventure while transporting you to the location you need to end up in September.

Strategies for Successful and Memorable Experiences

1 | take time to research.

Traveling anywhere requires lots and lots of research. Put in the time to better understand what it’s like to travel to and in all of the countries you are considering. Look online for travel advice for the specific locations you hope to visit and reach out to people who have completed similar trips before.

Even the simplest overlooked detail can completely derail your trip. You need to have a clear understanding of the local weather, how busy the location is, the costs of getting there, the type of bugs and wildlife in the area, the currency currently in use, how much it is to exchange your money, whether or not you can get by with the languages you know, how or if you’ll be able to use your phone, and if you have to pack adapters in order to plug in your devices. The list goes on, which is why it’s so important to take time to research the places you want to visit.

For example, there may be a specific tourist attraction you absolutely want to see, but maybe it’s closed or must be booked in advance at the time you’ll be there. Or you may arrive at a destination only to find out it’s 20 degrees hotter or colder than what you packed for.

Ample research and planning in advance will set you up for success, and it will ensure you actually know what you are getting yourself into.

2 | Learn Language Basics

In many, many countries, you can get by speaking English, but whatever country you visit, it helps to know a few basics of the local language.

At the very least, ensure you know how to say please and thank you. If you have any specific dietary restrictions or medical needs, ensure you know how to communicate those in the local language as well.

As you prepare for your trip, use free tools like Duolingo or other online courses to familiarize yourself with the basics. It’s also a good idea to download a translation app on your phone in case you get into a communication bind.

3 | You Don’t Have to Pack Everything

Believe it or not, soap, shampoo, moisturizer, and toothpaste are all available in other countries. You don’t need to fret about packing absolutely everything you’ll need for your trip. Unless you’re going to a very remote location and not staying at a hotel, you’ll be able to find any of the basics you need once you get there.

Prioritize packing any specialty medications, skincare, or cosmetics that you know you can’t live without—the rest you will be able to find. Plus, not packing so much will reduce the weight of your luggage, which is often a hidden cost when booking your plane ticket.

4 | Understand the Laws and Courtesies of the Country

Read up on the laws of the countries you are visiting before you go. Is drinking alcohol allowed in public areas? What substances are legal? Are there any curfews or dangers of being out late at night?

In addition to the hard laws, what common courtesies should be abided by in that country? What common actions could be perceived as rude or inconsiderate? What are the policies around leaving tips? What services do you typically tip for, and at what percentage?

Understanding the laws and courtesies of the places you visit will ensure you have a safe, enjoyable travel experience, and you may even make some friends in the process.

5 | Get Outside of Your Comfort Zone

Traveling is about exploring the world—seeing and doing things you can’t do from the comfort of your home. Try to take this opportunity to get outside of your comfort zone.

Depending on your own comfort zone, this could mean trying a food you’ve never tried before, shopping in a local market, or trying scuba diving for the first time.

No matter how nice your hotel room or Airbnb may be, ensure you take the time to step outside and actually explore the place you are visiting. Aside from being an incredibly rewarding experience for you, many of the stories you collect could be useful during future applications, interviews, and essays.

Pave Your Ideal Medical School Path

The decision to travel before medical school is a personal one. Don’t feel like you have to travel just because you have the time available. While traveling is incredibly rewarding and builds your character, problem solving skills, and understanding of other perspectives, it’s not for everyone.

The best thing you can do for yourself is complete plenty of research to better understand what the experience will be like. Reach out to others who have had similar experiences and put in the time to understand what you will be getting yourself into. At the same time, no travel experience is perfect. It will be difficult at times, and there may be road bumps along the way, but it’s all part of the experience. The variety of challenges you face is why people learn so much from traveling.

A Guide to Clinical Experience and Clinical Travel for Pre-med Students

Gaining clinical experience is not only a great way to bolster a medical school application, but it also provides valuable exposure for students who see a future as physicians. Medical schools may state that it is not a strict requirement, but any pre-med student would be doing themselves a disservice by not, at the very least, considering a shadowing or volunteering experience.

In the context of applications and admissions, clinical experience shows a deep interest in a career as a physician. It demonstrates that a student has a good idea of what their chosen career path involves and that they are more likely to be dedicated to it. Since getting through medical school and becoming a qualified physician is no easy feat, getting clinical experience before taking the plunge can help students to confirm whether it is truly a career they want to pursue.

At the same time, practical shadowing and volunteering may help you develop a disposition that allows you to care for many different people. Students can better understand what it truly takes to be patient, kind, and open to people from different backgrounds. Clinical experience also pushes students to think of their medical careers in the long term, developing a clearer career vision for themselves.

All About Clinical Travel

One of the most exciting and fulfilling ways to gain clinical experience is through clinical travel. Clinical travel opportunities are designed to immerse students in both a health setting and a new country. Students can learn about new cultures, explore a new environment and, most importantly, learn from qualified and highly experienced physicians. Because they are well-considered and curated to give students a holistic experience, medical student travel programs are ideal.

How Else Can Pre-Med Students Gain Clinical Experience?

There are several ways to gain valuable experience in a clinical setting as a pre-med student, and they don’t all involve going to another country. Shadowing is a great way to get a glimpse into the world of being a physician. This passive form of experience allows students to observe a physician as they carry out their daily duties and responsibilities. Students can follow a physician as they interact with their patients while having the opportunity to ask questions and have insightful discussions.

Although less common than other forms of clinical experience, scribing is a good way to observe doctor interactions with patients. As a scribe, a student would follow a doctor as they talk to their patients and take notes so that the doctor can give their full attention to the patient.

Students can diversify their clinical experience by participating in a mix of different opportunities over their years as pre-med students. This allows for varied learning and deeper insights into the world of medicine.

Is Clinical Travel More Valuable Than Other Types of Experience?

There are many valuable forms of clinical experience for pre-med students, so it would be unfair to say that clinical travel is more valuable than others. Each form of experience offers students different learning outcomes and benefits. Clinical travel is ideal for developing cultural and clinical skills, but students (especially those who intend on practicing in the U.S.) have a lot to gain from some clinical experience in their home country. This kind of opportunity allows students to familiarize themselves with specific demographics, such as the elderly and those from marginalized groups and socio-economic backgrounds. This is part of gaining cultural competency.

This directory includes a variety of international grants and fellowships in biomedical and behavioral research. It provides information about additional funding opportunities available to those in the field of global health research.

This program provides opportunities for physician-in-training scholars during their residency and career physician scholars for 6-week rotations overseas. Program sites vary. In previous years they were in Eritrea, Honduras, South Africa, Uganda, and Vietnam.

The Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship Program in Minority Health Policy is a one-year, full-time program designed to create physician-leaders who will pursue careers in minority health and health policy.

Association of Schools Programs of Public Health (ASPPH)/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship

This fellowship program provides international training opportunities for recent graduates of ASPPH member accredited schools of public health (Master of Public Health and Doctoral level).

GHFP Fellows are recruited for specific positions, working two to four years full time, gaining experience and expertise in global health development. Placements are made both in Washington, DC, and in developing countries.

International Travel Scholarships

Students and resident physician members of the MMS are eligible to apply for grants up to $2,000 to defray the costs of study in another country. The MMS will donate sufficient funds to the Foundation to underwrite five grants annually, although future provisions may be made to invite private or corporate donations to expand the size and/or number of grants. 

Up to $250 of funding is available for current medical student members of the MMS whose projects meet objectives in community and social service, public health activism, and education, or volunteer mentorship activities.

The AMWA provides grants up to $1,000 for assistance with transportation costs (airfare, train fare, etc.) connected with pursuing medical studies in an off-campus setting where the medically-neglected benefit.

This award provides round trip airfare and up to $1,000 toward living expenses for medical students proposing electives in clinical tropical medicine with at least one month at a site endemic for tropical communicable diseases.

The Adell & Hancock Fund Scholarships provide supplemental support to U.S. and international students who are in need of additional funds to carry out their international educational plans.

Sara’s Wish offers scholarships for extraordinary young women committed to making the world a better place by defraying the costs associated with traveling to all areas of the globe.

This award is for outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care. Awardees will have demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of minorities in the United States.

The Program supports one year of mentored clinical research training at a site in resource-limited resource and transitional countries. It  Aalso provides a stipend for an international graduate student to work alongside the U.S. trainee during the clinical research year.   

Fulbright Sscholarships for offer international exchange opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Infectious Diseases Society of America Medical Scholars Program

These Sscholarships are for medical students with mentorship by an Infectious Diseases Society of America IDSA member or fellow. Scholarship activity must focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities.

Boren Fellowships Pprovide up to $24,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increase language proficiency. 

CIDRZ HealthCorps Fellow Program is for medical, nursing, or Master of Public Health MPH students who are able to delay their studies for a year; recent graduates who wish to gain international experience; and college graduates with substantial skills or experiences to work in Lusaka, Zambia, for a 10- to 12 month duration.

These Sscholarships to cover Child Family Health International programs, which include: Introduction to Traditional Medicine, India; Cultural Crossroads in Health, Oaxaca, Mexico; and Urban & and Rural Comparative Health in Ecuador. 

Chateaubriand Fellowships are for American MD or PhD students to conduct research in a French laboratory for a six 6 to twelve month period.

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is for third-year medical students to spend three 3 months working at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon, on clinical rotations. 

U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Programs

Community Sservice fellowships are for graduate students in health-related professional fields who are dedicated to addressing unmet health needs in their local areas. 

The David E. Rogers Student Fellowship is meant to enrich the educational experiences of medical and dental students through projects that bear on medicine and dentistry as social enterprises. That is, as enterprises devoted to the capacity of these professions in any and all of their expressions to serve human needs, particularly the needs of underserved or disadvantaged patients or populations.

Medical students may apply for either the research fellowship or the service fellowship, which includes a $4,000 stipend for a 10-week period.

Medical missions are trips in which medical professionals or students travel abroad for a specified period of time for a specific medical purpose. While medical volunteering is when someone decides to dedicate time to a project that is focused on improving the circumstances of a community or the environment, medical mission opportunities can be a bit different. Volunteer organizations generally put in a lot of work to train volunteers. This is why some projects require volunteers to stay for at least a few weeks. There’s a shift going on in the volunteer landscape with projects welcoming volunteers for shorter periods. These are also known as short-term medical mission trips.

Students, people on a sabbatical or retirees may be able to dedicate themselves to a project for longer periods but there’s a large group of the population for who this simply isn’t an option. Medical relief missions are short-term volunteer programs that can be done for 1-4 weeks. Even if it is for that short amount of time, you can help and support doctors and do amazing things. Of course longer options are available, however, these short-term missions allow everyone to volunteer in for example clinics and experience the incredible benefits of volunteering while not having to stay for a long time period.

🏥 What are Pros and Cons of Medical Mission Trips?

If you’re determined to make a difference during your next holiday, why not volunteer for an international medical trip? Combine the freedom to travel while taking the time to do something for the community of your holiday destination. With medical mission projects entering the picture, being short on time is no longer an excuse for not volunteering. Countless projects and programs are waiting for your help, for example, medical mission trips for nurses or nursing students . Of course, you can also work with doctors. Before you plan you look at the medical mission work opportunities, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of those for professionals, students and nurses:

• Use medical mission work opportunities to volunteer and contribute for a limited period.

It is always advisable to do some research to make sure the local organization is offering a sustainable service to the community and using the funds they are getting properly.
• The time spent on the program is limited which may not allow you to connect as profoundly with your volunteer organization.
• When working with children it can be hard on them when volunteers come and go.

🤷🏽‍♀️ Why choose a Medical Mission Trip?

If you’re eager to volunteer but have a family, a job or other responsibilities that you simply can’t leave behind for long, a medical mission trip is exactly what you’re looking for. You will gain experience in volunteering, contribute to a meaningful cause and learn a great deal about the challenges others are facing daily.

Why Medical Mission Trips are making a difference? It’s fair to say that organizations prefer volunteers to dedicate themselves for longer periods of time for a program. The longer you stay, the more tasks and responsibilities you will have. This doesn’t mean that a shorter stay is meaningless or less meaningful in any way. The most important thing that will happen during your stay abroad is the cultural interchange and social contact between the volunteer and the locals. Gaining awareness about your volunteer destination will undoubtedly change the way you view the world afterward. Small changes do go a long way.

Is volunteering in developing countries condescending? There are claims that if you volunteer overseas that you’re portraying a message that these communities are unable to solve problems on their own. This mainly refers to programs that aren’t addressing the root problem and are exploiting both the community and the volunteers for personal gains. The goal should always be to empower local communities and give them the support they need to build a better future. Reputable organizations understand the needs of the community and are dedicated to helping the community progress. As doctors and nurses in the field of medicine, you will do exactly that in international clinics and hospitals! Medical mission trips for nursing students are perfect to learn and give practical support. You can leave an imprint as strong as the professionals do!

Although the time of your international volunteer trip may be short, that doesn’t mean your efforts are not of help. As, for example, a volunteer on one of the medical mission trips for college students or nursing students, you will gain a deeper understanding of what is going on in the part of the world your program is in. Still, the Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection ExactCare Value plan offers a reasonable rate for up to 100% trip cancellation and interruption insurance, $15,000 in secondary emergency medical benefits, and $150,000 in emergency medical evacuation coverage.

IU School of Medicine Medical Student Travel Grants

The IMPRS Office has limited funds for medical student travel awards each academic year. The purpose of the fund is to help medical students defray the cost of attending regional or national scientific meetings to present their scientific research or other scholarly work as a poster or oral presentations.

A review committee will evaluate the applications on a competitive basis four times within the academic year and a limited number of awards are available in each cycle due to the limited available funds.

This is a competitive process. Applying does not guarantee funds will be granted. Be mindful when making your travel plans. If awarded, funds are granted as reimbursements after you return from the conference and the required documentations are submitted.

Qualifications/Eligibility

• Must be enrolled as an IU School of Medicine medical student in good standing.
• Must be the presenting author (first author) of the poster or platform session at a national/international meeting. Only one person can be first author and be presenting a talk or poster. We will only accept one application per presentation.
• Priorities will be given to first-time applicants. If funds are available, prior grant awardees or recipients of major scholarships will be considered.
• Maximum requested amount is $500.
• The faculty mentor or department in which the research or scholarly work was done is also expected to contribute to the support of the student’s travel.

Restrictions

• Awards can only be applied to registration fee, transportation and hotel accommodations.
• You may only submit a travel grant for one conference and one presentation per academic year.
• If you have been awarded the grant, you are asked to submit proof of attendance in order to receive the funds in your bursar account. Upon your return, please submit a 1/2 page synopsis of conference and receipts (registration, airfare and/or hotel accommodations).

Absolute Deadlines: Applicants will be reviewed immediately after the cycle submission due date.

• Medical Student Travel Grant

The Medical Student Travel Grant assists medical students that want to attend the annual meeting. The scholarship covers three nights lodging at the host hotel and $500 towards travel expenses. There is no registration fee charge for medical students to attend the ASRM Annual Meeting. Additional expenses are the responsibility of the student or institution. Previous recipients of this grant are not eligible. The applicant cannot receive multiple scholarships/grants from the ASRM in one year.

Applicants must be a medical student at the time of the annual meeting and must be granted time away from rotation to attend the meeting. Applicants must submit a completed application, letter of sponsorship from faculty mentor, current CV, statement of interest, and a letter from the student office granting you time away from rotation to attend the ASRM Annual Meeting. Medical Student Travel Award

The Division of Member Services created the Medical Student Travel Award | Clinical Congress 2023 for a medical student who has shown an interest in surgery and the mission of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).  From October 22-25, 2023, the Awardee will have the opportunity to attend Clinical Congress 2023 in Boston, MA.

The Awardee will receive $2,000 to cover flight, hotel, and reasonable travel expenses. All receipts must be submitted to the ACS with unused funds within 45 days of Clinical Congress.

Application Terms and Requirements: 

• This award is only open to all domestic medical student members.
• Applicants must be a current member of the American College of Surgeons

Applications will be open from May 15–July 21. Applications are submitted online, and the submission link will automatically close at midnight Saturday, July 22.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
