FAQ: FRANCE AND SWITZERLAND ITINERARY

First things first, here are some FAQs and then we will talk about the actual itinerary.

HOW MANY DAYS FOR A SWITZERLAND AND FRANCE TRIP

Here’s a possible breakdown of how to spend your time:

  • Geneva : 1-2 days
  • Lausanne : 1 day
  • Montreux : 1 day
  • Glacier 3000: 1 day
  • Yvoire: 1 day
  • Annecy : 1-2 days
  • Chamonix and Mont Blanc: 2-3 days

This adds up to around 10-12 days, but you could add an extra day or two to any of the destinations depending on your interests. Additionally, you could consider adding other nearby destinations, such as Zermatt or Interlaken in Switzerland, if you have more time available.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide how much time you want to spend in each place based on your interests and preferences.

HOW EXPENSIVE ARE SWITZERLAND AND FRANCE

France and Switzerland are relatively expensive destinations, especially in cities and tourist areas. However, the overall cost of your trip will depend on several factors, such as the time of year you visit, the type of accommodation you choose, and the activities and dining options you prefer.

Here are some general considerations for the costs of the above itinerary:

Accommodation : The cost of accommodation in Geneva and other Swiss cities can be quite high, especially during peak tourist season. However, you may be able to find more affordable options in smaller towns or by booking in advance.

Transportation : Train travel in Switzerland and France can be quite expensive, but it’s also a very efficient and convenient way to get around. Consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass or other regional travel pass to save money on transportation costs.

Food and drink : Dining out in Switzerland and France can also be pricey, especially in tourist areas. Look for local markets and grocery stores to save money on meals, or consider picnicking in scenic areas for a unique and affordable dining experience.

Activities : Entrance fees for attractions such as cable cars, museums, and historical sites can also add up quickly. Look for discounts or passes that bundle multiple attractions together to save money.

Overall, it’s possible to enjoy a trip to France and Switzerland on a budget , but it may require some planning and research to find the best deals and affordable options.

BEST WAY TO GET AROUND

The best way to get around for the above-mentioned France and Switzerland itinerary would be a combination of trains, buses, and boats.

Switzerland has an excellent public transportation system, with reliable trains and buses that run frequently and efficiently. The Swiss Travel Pass is a cost-effective option that provides unlimited access to public transport, including buses, trains, and boats, and also offers free entry to more than 500 museums and exhibitions.

In France, trains are a convenient and comfortable way to travel between cities, with high-speed trains linking major destinations. Buses are also available, especially for shorter trips or for travel to smaller towns not serviced by trains.

For scenic routes such as along Lake Geneva or in the Chamonix Valley, boats are a great option, providing breathtaking views and a unique way to experience the region.

A combination of these modes of transportation will provide flexibility and allow for easy access to the many beautiful destinations in France and Switzerland.

Depending on the length of your stay, I suggest changing hotels 2-3 times. First, my suggestion is to book a hotel in Geneva or Montrezx and do day trips from there.

DO I NEED A VISIT FOR FRANCE AND SWITZERLAND

It depends on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit. If you are a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Union (EU) or European Free Trade Association (EFTA), you do not need a visa to visit Switzerland or France for up to 90 days within 180 days as a tourist or for business purposes.

If you are not a citizen of the EU or EFTA, you may need a visa depending on your nationality. Visa requirements are subject to change, so it’s best to check with the appropriate authorities or a reputable travel agency for the latest information and requirements.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME FOR A FRANCE + SWITZERLAND TRIP

The best time to visit France and Switzerland for this itinerary would be during the summer months of June, July, and August, as well as early fall in September and early October.

During this time, the weather is generally warm and pleasant, with plenty of sunshine and long daylight hours, making it perfect for exploring the beautiful towns and natural attractions of both countries. This is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices, especially in popular tourist destinations like Montreux, Lake Geneva, and Chamonix.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds and higher prices, the shoulder season of May and October can also be a good time to visit. The weather may be slightly cooler, but the scenery is still breathtaking, and there are usually fewer tourists around.

Winter is also a great time to visit Switzerland for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, especially in the Chamonix Valley and Mont Blanc area, but be prepared for colder temperatures and shorter days.

WHAT TO PACK

When packing for the above-mentioned itinerary to France and Switzerland, it’s important to pack for varying weather conditions and activities. Here are some essential items to include in your packing list:

  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring the cities and towns, as well as hiking boots if you plan to go hiking in the mountains.
  • Layers of clothing to accommodate the varying weather conditions. Bring light, breathable clothes for warm days, and a jacket or sweater for cooler evenings and higher altitudes.
  • Rain gear, including a waterproof jacket or poncho and umbrella, as rain showers are common in both countries, especially in the summer months.
  • Swimsuit, as there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and water activities in Lake Geneva and the surrounding areas.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun during the day.
  • Travel adapters to ensure that your electronics can be charged and used in both countries.
  • A backpack or daypack for carrying essentials during the day, such as water, snacks, and a camera.
  • Travel documents, including your passport, visa (if required), travel insurance, and any necessary vaccination certificates.
  • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during the day, as tap water is safe to drink in both countries.
  • If you plan to go skiing, bring warm and waterproof ski clothing, including gloves, a hat, and goggles.

Overall, packing for this itinerary requires practical and versatile items that can be layered and mixed, and matched for different activities and weather conditions.

Yvoire is a medieval village located on the shores of Lake Geneva in France, about 25 kilometers southwest of Geneva. If you have more than 7 or 10 days in France & Switzerland, I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary. It can make a wonderful day trip from Geneva.

Yvoire is a charming medieval village located on the shores of Lake Geneva in France. Its picturesque streets and historic buildings, including a 14th-century castle, make it a popular destination.

Most beautiful medieval village in south-east France Yvoire

Here are the best ways to get to Yvoire from Geneva and what to do when you get there:

  • By car: The easiest way to get to Yvoire from Geneva is by car. The drive takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.
  • By public transportation: I suggest, taking a train from Geneva to the pretty town of Nyon, Switzerland, and then taking a ferry across Lake Geneva to Yvoire. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes, and the entire journey takes about an hour and a half.

2-3 DAY – CHAMONIX & MONT BLANC

Chamonix is a beautiful French Alpine town (also known as the Mont Blanc town), known for its stunning natural scenery and world-class skiing and hiking. Of course, it is a lot about Mont Blanc (which I will talk about more in detail later on), and you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, including the Aiguille du Midi and the Mer de Glace Glacier.

The town itself is charming, with traditional Alpine architecture, cozy cafes, and boutique shops. In the summer, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, and other outdoor activities.

Most beautiful places in France CHAMONIX MONT BLANC village

In the winter, Chamonix is a skier’s paradise, with numerous ski areas, cross-country skiing trails, and snowshoeing options. The town also has several museums and cultural attractions, including the Alpine Museum and the Maison de la Montagne, which offer insights into the history and culture of the region.

Visit the Mer de Glace Glacier : This is one of the largest glaciers in Europe and can be accessed by a funicular train.

Skiing and snowboarding : Chamonix has several ski areas, including Les Houches and Brevent-Flegere, with over 150 kilometers of ski runs.

Hiking : There are numerous hiking trails in and around Chamonix, ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs.

Paragliding : Experience the thrill of flying over the mountains with a tandem paragliding flight.

Visit the Alpine Museum : Learn about the history and culture of the region at this museum, which has exhibits on mountaineering, skiing, and more.

Relax at a spa : After a day of skiing or hiking, unwind at one of the many spas in Chamonix, which offer massages, saunas, and other treatments.

Switzerland has the Matterhorn and France (and Italy ) has the Mont Blanc – these two mountains are some of the most iconic in the world!

Mont Blanc must-see France and Switzerland itinerary

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps , with an elevation of 4,810 meters (15,780 feet). It is located on the border between France and Italy and is a popular destination for mountaineers and tourists alike – and if you get the chance to add the Mont Blanc to your France and Switzerland itinerary, I highly suggest doing so.

The mountain is part of the Mont Blanc Massif, a range of mountains that includes several other peaks over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). The Mont Blanc range offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including glaciers, valleys, and lakes, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Though you can not directly access the mountain peak of Mont Blanc by cable car, you do get pretty close.

Take a cable car or train to the summit : If you want to experience Mont Blanc’s stunning views without climbing, you can take a cable car or train to the summit. The Aiguille du Midi cable car in Chamonix offers spectacular views of Mont Blanc, as well as the surrounding peaks – it stands at 3.842 meters (or 12,605 feet) and is the closest you can get to the summit of Mont Blanc without climbing yourself.

The cable car is divided into two stages. 1) from Chamonix to Plan de l’Aiguille, a height of 2,317 meters, where to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. 2) from Plan de l’Aiguille to the summit of Aiguille du Midi, a height of 3,842 meters.

At the summit, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding Alps, including Mont Blanc, as well as a range of activities such as the “Step into the Void,” a glass box that extends over a 1,000-meter drop, giving visitors the sensation of standing in mid-air.

However, due to the high altitude, the main tips I can give you are to be prepared for cold temperatures (even in the summer months) and take appropriate precautions to avoid altitude sickness. Drink lots of water and have a pit stop at Plan de l’Aiguille for half an hour or an hour.

What about climbing Mont Blanc? Climbing Mont Blanc is a serious undertaking and requires proper preparation, training, and equipment. If you’re not an experienced mountaineer, it is nothing I recommend for regular people like you and me (no offense!).

FINAL THOUGHTS ON A SWITZERLAND AND FRANCE ITINERARY

Old town of Zurich by the river on a france and switzerland itinerary 10 days

On the 2nd day in Zurich it’s time to head into the mountains around Zurich

Located on the outskirts of Zurich,  Felsenegg  is a mountain offering spectacular views of the city and the surrounding countryside and is perfect for a day trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

To reach Felsenegg, take the Uetlibergbahn train from the Zurich main station to the Adliswil station, which is about a 20-minute ride. From there, catch the Felsenegg cable car, which will take you 800 meters up in just a few minutes! Or, the more adventurous ones can hike to the top from the station of Adliswil, which will take about an hour.

Felsenegg is truly a highlight of the France Switzerland itinerary!

At the top, you can enjoy the fascinating views of Zurich and the Lake in the distance, with the snow-covered Alps. As you soak in the views, don’t forget to try relishing fondue at the Gasthaus Felsenegg Inn!

You can also choose from the many hiking trails atop the mountain. I recommend doing the Planet Trail which takes you through a forested area, with signs and markers along the way that provide information about the planets and their features. The more seasoned hikers can hike to the summit of Uetliberg, the highest point in Zurich. This trail is around 10 kilometres and will take 3-4 hours. Other hiking options include a trek to the town of Buchenegg or Albis Pass.

As the Swiss Alps remain etched in your memory, head back to Zurich for the last leg of the France and Switzerland itinerary.

Lindt Home of Chocolate

But wait, I have another surprise in store! I don’t think there is a better way to end any trip to Zurich than with a visit to the Lindt Home of Chocolate!

Dive into the history of chocolate making in the Museum’s chocolate tour and experience the world of chocolate with all your senses. Remember the chocolate fountain in the movie ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’?

It pales in comparison to the fountain in this Museum! You also have the option of taking a chocolate course under the expert guidance of their Master Chocolatiers, very you can create your very own chocolate masterpieces.

Note:  Early booking is a must for a visit to this Chocolate Home as it is an extremely famous attraction in Zurich. You can book the tickets on their official website below.

SDG 3,000 (per person)

travel france and switzerland

AirFrance (Singapore – Switzerland – Singapore)

travel france and switzerland

12 – 25 March

Day 0: Flight from Singapore – Zurich

  • Flight from Singapore to Zurich, transit in Amsterdam
  • The transit queue can get very long in Schiphol. Our transit time was about 3 hours and we didn’t have much time to spare, so make sure you opt for a direct flight or one with a longer transit time. Also, avoid transit through Paris as it’s highly inefficient there.
  • Flight with KLM and was very well-fed, so no worries on that end.
  • Total flight time was about 18-20 hours. Reached Zurich and then take train to Bern – Frutigen and reached Airbnb about

Day 1: Iseltwald – Lake Brienz – Blausee

travel france and switzerland

  • Early morning train to Interlaken, then bus to Iseltwald Reached at 9 am and there are literally us and 3 other people there.
  • 11am: Off to Brien Lake via bus. Had lunch by the lake.
  • 2 pm: Off to Blausee. Our Airbnb was actually a few bus stops away from Blausee and the hosts offered us some local discount on the ticket to Blausee so each of us ended up spending only 5CHF (instead of 10CHF).
  • Blausee tickets can be bought at the entrance. Slightly cheaper on weekdays (about 8CHF).

Day 2: Grindelwald – Lauterbrunnen – Wengen

travel france and switzerland

  • Early morning train to Grindelwald
  • Took the 30-min cable car to Grindelwald first (32CHF with Swisspass)
  • First Cliff Walk – super empty
  • Ended up chilling at the restaurant at the top and enjoying the sun and the view
  • Skipped Balchapsee Lake as it wasn’t easy to hike in the snow unless you have appropriate shoes.
  • Train back to Lauterbrunnen and had lunch there (at one of the benches along the way)
  • Off to Wengen at about 2 pm. There’s a nice viewpoint at Evangelisch Reformierte Kirche Wengen in Wengen, just about 10-15 mins walk from the train station.
  • Intended to go to Murren but we were too tired by 4pm so decided to head home.

Day 3: Bern – Geneva

travel france and switzerland

  • Checked out from our Airbnb early in the morning and took the train to Bern
  • Deposited luggage in Bern stations (12CHF for 3 of us, for 6 hours of storage)
  • Took a walk around Bern Old Town. At the end of the walk, there’s a bridge that will offer a great view of the Nydeggbrucke Bridge.
  • Took the train to Geneva and had lunch on the train
  • Checked in to our hotel, then visit Geneva Old Town and Lake Geneva
  • Took the mini yellow boat (included in Swiss pass as it is a means of public transport there). The boat is small and there’s not much to see, but it’s an experience nonetheless.

Day 4: Geneva – Lyon

  • Had a slow morning in Geneva enjoying the sun
  • Took bus to Lyon (about 3+ hours)
  • Met up with some acquaintances in Lyon and started our 4 spontaneous days in France
  • Note: We stayed at acquaintance’s house in Villefranche Sur Saone, a 30min train ride from Lyon. But you could also choose to stay in Lyon to save travelling time.

Day 5: Lyon

  • Took the train to Lyon
  • Visit Lyon old town
  • Lunch at Vieux Lyon restaurant (had Foie gras mi-cuit, escargots and quenelle brochet)
  • Had crepes at one of the stores on the way

Day 6: Pérouges

  • Travel to Perouges by train from Lyon Part Dieu.
  • Medieval town. Need to take a 15 min walk from the Meximieux main station.
  • Lunch at Les Terrasses Perouges (pretty cheap lunch Eur 35 for 1 entrée, 2 mains and 1 dessert)
  • Stroll the town. Pretty small town but very unique. If you stay in Lyon, you probably can spend a couple of hours there and go back to Lyon. You can definitely squeeze in something else for the day, but we started the day late so we decided to just spend time in Pérouges on that day.

Day 7: Annecy

  • Train to Annecy (about 2hours)
  • Very crowded and touristy. Recommend to travel on weekday instead as locals flock here during weekends.
  • Lake Annecy is very nice. There are some watersports activities too, but be sure to get there a bit early to join the queue as it can get crowded.
  • Had lunch at Cochon – a small Italian place with great atmostphere and a huge food portion
  • Get ice cream at Glaciers Des Alps. Very generous scoop and perfect for the day out.
  • *Remember to check your train timetable. Sometimes it’s changed to a bus last minute, and if your ride back is a bus, make sure to get there early and get on the bus because they can run out of space on the bus (overbooked) and you have to take 2 hours later train like us 😛

Day 8: Lyon – Lausanne

  • Early bus from Annecy to Lausanne (about 3-4 hours)
  • Clean and quiet university city, with the perfect view of Lac Leman (imo Lausanne has a better view of Lac Leman than Geneva)
  • Spent a chill day at Lausanne
  • Tip: buy cheese from France as they have more variety, then bring to Lausanne for a nice picnic by the lake or at the park nearby.
  • Stayed at: Agora Swiss Night. Very very convenient location, walkable to both the lake and the main Lausanne-gare.
  • Our hotel also gave us free metro card to use on the 2 days we’re there.

Day 9: Lausanne – Luzern

  • Train to Luzern, which is about 2 hours.
  • Put luggage in the station and went for a walk in the Luzern old town.
  • Checked in to our Airbnb (which is located near Hochdorf, a town near Luzern)
  • Tips : If you have the means to afford, I recommend staying in Luzern or in a town near Luzern with a main station. We had to take a bus from Hochdorf to our Airbnb, which only runs once every 30 minutes – 60 minutes.

Day 10: Rigi Kulm (Mt. Rigi)

  • *we bought Swiss pass for the next 3 days
  • Rigi Kulm (free train included in Swiss pass)
  • We took the blue train to the top of Rigi first. The route is : 1. Luzern – Arth-Goldau (normal train)
  • 2. Arth-Goldau – Rigi Kulm (cogwheel train – the blue train)
  • It was quite windy on the top so super cold then, but this should be better in the summer.
  • Visit the Panoramic cliff walk. In summer, you can hike from the top of Rigi there (easier than climbing up). If not, it should be one of the stops along the way.
  • We spent quite a bit of time sitting at the cliff edge since it’s very nice and chill. If you’re into hiking, Rigi is a very nice place for hiking and the trail looks doable.
  • We then take the red train down to different stops along the way. If you search on SBB app, it should be the train that takes you from Rigi Kulm to Vitznau.
  • From Vitznau to Luzern, take the boat. In the SBB app, you should see some route that has the BAT (boat) option. The boat ride is very nice (and it’s included in Swiss pass). This boat ride will take you around lake Luzern.
  • If you’re taking the boat in the afternoon, go to the right side of the boat as there’s less sun and nicer scenery.
  •   Tip : Always check and plan your trip in advance as the timing is very tricky, and the time intervals are usually 30 mins – 1 hour and you don’t want to be waiting at different stops on Rigi for 1 hour each 😛

Day 11: Mt. Titlis

  • 50% off tix with Swiss pass. I recommend allocating a whole day for Titlis as there is a lot to do there.
  • Train from Luzern, then take a bus right outside of the station to the cable car. You’ll need to show your ticket at the station before you can enter the cable car.
  • The cable car will end at Stans, and we need to change to the rotating cable there.
  • We head to the top station first. There’s a suspension bridge there. Super windy so it’s super cold.
  • There’s also a panaromic lounge on level for at the top station. It’s a very nice corner for lunch and chill.
  • In winter, there’s snowxpark with snow tubing. I think there’s an equivalent version of that in the summer where there’s snowtubing as well but prolly indoor because there’s no snow in summer.
  • Trubsee is a lake. We didn’t get to see it in the winter as it’s frozen and just looks like everywhere else, but apparently it’s quite nice in summer. Just a short walk from the station.
  • The ticket is a one-way ticket, so once you come down, you can’t go up to the station above anymore.
  • It’s quite cold on the top of the mountain, so dress appropriately
  • -Wear snow appropriate shoes, if not, you can rent at 10 CHF. But because of the one-way ticket issue, rent shoes from the lowest cable car station first so you can use it whole day. If you rent from the higher stations, you cannot bring it to lower cable car station.

Day 12: Luzern

  • Explore Luzern mostly to make full use of our Swiss pass. There are more mountain trails that are open in the summer, so you can consider that instead.
  • Rotsee is a small nice park in Luzern. Just a few bus stops away from Luzern station. Nice for a picnic if weather is good and you have nothing to do on your itinerary or just want a rest day.

Day 13: Luzern – Zurich

  • Train from Luzern to Zurich
  • We visited Muensterbruecker, which is a famous bridge in Zurich
  • Also visited Lindenhof, the park overlooking Zurich.
  • If you have time, can take a trip to Lindt chocolate museum.

Recommendations

Accommodation:.

  • Kandergrund, Bern (near Frutigen) : this Airbnb is located in a nearby town from Interlaken. Lovely host, but is slightly out of the way so you do need to take a bit of public transport to get to main attractions
  • Römerswil, Luzern, Switzerland : this Airbnb is located in the outskirt of Luzern. You will need to take a bus to get to the nearby train station. Good for 1-2 night stay.
  • No restaurant recommendation in Switzerland because we mostly pack our food.
  • Tête de Couchon (Annecy) : extremely fun atmostphere and good service. Food portion was huge too.
  • Le Vieux Lyon (Lyon) : slightly touristy but good food. Affordable pricing as well.

Transportation:

  • We got our SwissPass from Klook. There are 3, 4, 6, 8, 15-day options.

Tips for Switzerland – France Trip

  • Book Airbnb with kitchen so you can make your own food as most of the food is quite expensive and the cuisine doesn’t stand out
  • Roasted chicken at Coop is very nice and cheap option for dinner
  • Bread is cheap as well, so you can make your own sandwich and pack it for lunch
  • Coop and Migros grocery store usually has hot chocolate/ coffee machine. About 2.5 CHF each.
  • Migros is generally cheaper than Coop
  • Coffee yogurt is nice, should try
  • Berries and Avocadoes are quite cheap there
  • Swiss pass makes it much cheaper to travel around. Always check if your cogwheel train/ cable car is included in Swiss pass or if they’re only 50% or 25% off with swiss pass.
  • If you somehow don’t have Swisspass that covers your entire travel duration, then plan your trip early and purchase the day ticket/ single trip ticket earlier. The later it is, the more expensive the day/ single trip ticket.

Apps to download:

  • SBB – Switzerland transportation app. You can check train timing and plan your route using the app
  • SNCF – France transportation app. You can check train timing, purchase ticket and plan your route there. Note that this app is only for inter-city trains, not for within city Metro. If you want to take the Metro, you need to purchase the ticket at the Metro kiosk, just like in Singapore.

Best time for travel peaks of europe: the alps to the dolomites featuring france, switzerland, liechtenstein, austria, and italy.

While just about any month is great to visit France, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy, there are a few prime times of the year for the Peaks of Europe  tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Milder weather and fewer crowds in the shoulder season make spring a nice time to visit.

Summer: A great time for this tour is in the summer, with colorful, breathtaking scenery in every direction. It’s the busy season, so you’ll see lots of other travelers. While the weather can get quite warm, the Alps tend to be a bit cooler than the surrounding areas.

Fall: You’ll still encounter crowds through mid-October, but the weather is sensational.

In Chamonix you have the choice between 2 activities. Explore the legendary Mont Blanc – Europe's tallest peak and birthplace of mountaineering – your way. Ascend the Aiguille du Midi by cable car to an elevation of over 12,600 feet (3,842 meters)*. This is the closest you can get to the summit of Europe’s tallest peak. Your second choice is to relax aboard the Tramway du Mont Blanc rack-railway taking in its vintage charm and the impressive views from the Eagle’s Nest, located 7,782 feet above sea level (2,372 meters).

Continue your exploration of Italy with a two-night stay in Venice, the “Queen of the Adriatic”. From your centrally located hotel, the city is yours to uncover. Join a local guide for a walking tour of this incredible city, and enjoy ample free time to meander amongst the historic streets, taking in the city’s unique architecture and gondola-laden canals.

  • Mogliano Veneto - Venice
  • Continue your exploration of Italy with a 2-night stay in Venice, the “Queen of the Adriatic.” After a motorboat transfer, meet your local guide for a walking tour of this incredible city, including the Bridge of Sighs, the Clock Tower, and St. Mark’s Square. Meander amongst the historic streets, taking in the city’s unique architecture and gondola-laden canals. You may choose to experience the local cuisine at a typical bacaro, a small wine-bar where locals stop for a glass of wine – traditionally called ombra – and a quick bite of local tapas – that Venetians call cicchetti. Or take a local public waterbus ride to the nearby island of San Giorgio which offers spectacular views of St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace.
  • Venice - Tour Ends
  • Say arrivederci to Italy as your tour comes to a close.

Cross into Germany for a visit to Oberammergau, the world-renowned home of the Passion Play. Paris and Switzerland are just three hours apart: the TGV Lyria trains travel daily between the French capital and Zurich, Basel, Geneva and Lausanne.

France and Switzerland are historically linked by rail: the first international train connection into Switzerland was from Strasbourg to Basel. Established in 1844, the “Compagnie du chemin de fer de Strasbourg à Bâle” was a predecessor to the many train connections that exists today.

Efficient and convenient trains from France to Switzerland

Linking city centres in France and Switzerland, today’s rail lines are popular among different travelers. French business folks will zip to Zurich for their weekly team meetings. Young couples decide to spend a weekend of culture in Lausanne. And overseas travelers would transfer from France to Switzerland by train before spending a few days in the alpine nation.

I think a meeting on the first day around 5pm that you meet the group and find out where day from and how long they stay with the tour would be helpful, and that they tell us the rules like no food on the bus, before we all go for dinner. The staff was great and the bus drivers were excellent everyone was friendly and helpful. My family and I will do it again.

Harmonious Europe

The trip was good in general, but I have to mention that the hotels were mostly very distant from the city center, except in Zurich. Other than that everything was good, the guides were nice and informative, buses were comfortable (but unfortunately without wifi). I would go again with Europamundo, but hopefully all hotels will be better :) Thank you, Best regards,

What people love about France, Italy And Switzerland Tours

We had a great time. I am planning my next trip soon with tourradar. Your tour guides are fantastic, especially Gaetano, Filipo, and Lee
I enjoyed the entire course of the tour. The only thing i can comment is the location of the hotels that is quite far from the center ie: Milan and Florence. Thanks to google and it was very accurate. We DIY in some of the locations like Paris, Zurich, Rome. The over all coordination is excellent. I commend Bego shes very nice and informative.
TourRadar did a fine job of making the purchase of my Tour du Mont Blanc easy and accurate.

As a tourist, the activities you might do in Switzerland also tend to be more expensive than in France. Everything from ski resorts to museums and restaurants can come with a hefty price tag. For many, Switzerland is definitely worth the cost, but if you're not prepared to pay for it, you may miss out on a lot of what Switzerland has to offer.

What are the most expensive and cheapest cities and regions in Switzerland and France?

In France, Paris can be a bit more expensive than the countryside, but the coastal areas are also quite expensive, particularly during peak travel months.

In Switzerland, the amount you spend really depends on what activities you're hoping to do. Winter sports are also particularly expensive, so be prepared to pay a premium to stay at a ski resort. It's also hard to see a significant difference in price between smaller towns and larger cities. Prices are slightly less during the low seasons in Switzerland.

How can you save money while visiting Switzerland and France?

Stay flexible. If you don't like the city you're in, or find better accommodation for a lower price, be willing to change your plans a little.

Stay with a local. Lots of locals rent out rooms and this is a fun and affordable way to experience the country.

In Switzerland, stock up on food and supplies when you're passing through the border towns. Things in border towns tend to be a bit less expensive.

Eat where the locals eat. Restaurants that are geared toward tourists will inevitably be more expensive. Try to find a local eatery and you're sure to save a good bit of money.

If ever there was a country where it's worth preparing your own meals, it's Switzerland. Restaurant prices can be extravagantly high (although the quality is usually also high). If you want to keep your expenses down, stock up on cheap groceries and plan to make your own meals.

When is the best time to visit Switzerland or France?

Both places have a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. As both cities are in the northern hemisphere, summer is in July and winter is in January.

Because Switzerland is a mountainous nation and in the heart of Europe, you can expect cold, snowy winters here. But the summers can be warm, sunny, and pleasant. These warmer months are a great time to come for hiking and outdoor activities, as is the fall.

The weather in France is fairly predictable, as it sees four seasons. Summers are warm all over, and winters can be cold, especially in the northern areas. The southern coastal areas are not quite as cold in the winter, but they can still be a bit chilly at times. The summer, fall, and spring tend to be the busier times for travelers to visit, with summer being the peak time of year for most of the country.

France is a beautiful place to visit during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. During these times temperatures are pleasant and crowds tend to be less than the peak summer months. The summer season can get crowded with travelers and cruise ship passengers and prices typically peak during these times, although it has become a bit more difficult to get off season discounts in France for accommodation or tours. Even during the cold winter months, many hotels are popular with business travelers or tour groups, which drive up prices. Deals on airline tickets can still be found during these low times.

The best time to visit Switzerland really depends on what you hope to do there. The winter months are most popular for skiing and other winter sports. March and April is when most of the ski resorts close for the season, so this is a low season in the area. As the spring progresses, more hiking trails will become accessible and by June most trails are great for hiking. July and August is the summer high season when hiking and biking are most popular. By October the weather is getting cooler but it's still too warm for skiing, so this is a low season. December is popular because of the charming Christmas atmosphere and by late December ski resorts are starting to open up.

Is CERN activating the world’s most powerful particle accelerator for the April 8 eclipse? No

Cern restarted its large hadron collider after a regular winter stop for maintenance. it is unrelated to the eclipse. .

As people around the country await the April 8 total eclipse, conspiracy theories about a Switzerland-based nuclear research facility have some social media users on edge. In their view is CERN, also known as the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

“Why is CERN being reactivated on April 8, the same day as the infamous eclipse?” asked a  March 29 Facebook post , referencing what it called the group’s plan to activate “the large hadron collider” on the day of the eclipse. “My gut instinct is that something really big is being planned for that day… perhaps a total takedown of both the grid and society in general worldwide.” In  another post  April 1, a man in a baseball cap speculated that CERN is deliberately starting back up April 8 to “open up a gateway, a portal.”

It is not unusual for scientists to conduct research during an eclipse, when the sun’s corona becomes visible and areas in totality go briefly dark in the moon’s shadow.  Total solar eclipses   allow researchers “to study Earth’s atmosphere under uncommon conditions.” NASA, for example, is launching three sounding rockets on the day of the eclipse to study its effects on the ionosphere (a mission that also became a  subject of   misinformation ).

But CERN’s research is different. The primary research focus of CERN — an acronym derived from the French name “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire” — is  particle physics , or “the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces acting between them.” The organization seeks to find answers about the  universe’s fundamental structure .

CERN houses the Large Hadron Collider, the  most powerful particle accelerator in the world , which measures around 16.8 miles (27 kilometers) in circumference. The collider’s aim, as  Britannica explains , is to “understand the fundamental structure of matter by re-creating the extreme conditions that occurred in the first few moments of the universe according to the big-bang model.”

CERN spokesperson Sophie Tesauri told PolitiFact in an email that the collider’s activities have nothing to do with the April 8 eclipse.

“What we do at CERN is doing particle physics with accelerators such as the LHC, and this has little to do with astrophysics in a direct way,”  Tesauri said. “So there is no link between the solar eclipse on Monday 8th April, and what we do at CERN.”

CERN has an  accelerator complex  composed of machines with “increasingly higher energies.” A beam of particles is injected by one machine to the next one, bringing the beam to a higher energy — and the Large Hadron Collider is the last element in this complex.

“Hadrons” are a group of particles that include protons and ions. In the Large Hadron Collider,  two beams  travel in opposite directions at nearly light speed and are made to collide. In 2012, Large Hadron Collider experiments led to the discovery of the  Higgs boson particle , a particle named for British physicist Peter Higgs, who in the 1960s postulated about the existence of a particle that interacted with other particles at the beginning of time to provide them with their mass.

Tesauri told PolitiFact that the accelerator complex is restarted every year after a brief winter technical stop, when beam production ceases so that the accelerators can undergo maintenance. Restarting an accelerator like the Large Hadron Collider “requires a full commissioning process in order to check that all equipment works properly.”

“Now that all the checks have been performed, the LHC is ready to provide particle collisions to the LHC experiments, and first collisions for this year should actually happen today 5th April,” Tesauri said in her email. “This will mark the beginning of the physics run for 2024.”

The beams were initially expected to enter collision April 8, according to a  March 14 report . It said, “Depending on how work progresses, this milestone may shift forwards or backwards by a few days.”

On April 5, CERN  announced  that the Large Hadron Collider achieved its first stable beams in 2024, “marking the official start of the 2024 physics data-taking season.” The statement said that from March 8 to April 5, the Large Hadron Collider was set up to handle the beam and tested for any issues.

“Although the solar eclipse on 8 April will not affect the beams in the LHC, the gravitational pull of the moon, like the tides, changes the shape of the LHC because the machine is so big,” CERN’s announcement said. This phenomenon is not unique to an eclipse; a  2012 news release  discussed distortions in the machine brought about by a full moon.

According to CERN’s frequently asked questions page, the Large Hadron Collider is  expected to run over 20 years , “with several stops scheduled for upgrades and maintenance work.”

Conspiracy theories surrounding CERN’s work have been circulating for  years . In a statement to  Verify  fact-checkers, CERN said that its research “captures the imagination of lots of people, which is why CERN has been featured in a lot of science fiction books / even movies, around the world.” CERN said works inspired by its research are fictional and “should not be confused with the actual scientific research.”

False claims about the group’s work are so common that the organization addresses some common theories on its  FAQ page : No, it won’t “open a door to another dimension,” and no, it won’t “generate black holes in the cosmological sense.”

We rate the claim that CERN is activating its Large Hadron Collider in connection with the April 8 solar eclipse False.
