  • USER REVIEWS

Quick Handling, strong, flickable, fast. Fairly modern geometry despite the age.

Not much, really. Maybe the lack of disc tabs, but it was 1998 after all...

Bought this bike new in late 1997, a gold 1998 model. Rode it HARD for a lot of years, never weighed less than 235lbs. Absolutely loved this bike and would buy another one if I could find one. Great for beginners or someone looking at picking up a high quality retro aluminum bike. Now in 2013 I cracked the frame where the chainstay meets the bottom bracket shell. Wisconson-made frames are lifetime warranty though, and the components are still holding up, so I'm giving Trek a chance to show me what they'll do on a 16 year old frame with a lifetime warranty.

Frame and geometry

Outdated components

I know it is 2013 but I am keeping the love of the Trek 7000 zx alive.I bought a Trek 7000 zx frame off of a guy and I decided to build it up. Manitou Black Elite coil fork, carbon bars, carbon stem, eragon grips, Bontrager Evoke saddle, original Icon seatpost, Shimano XTR/XT components, FSA XC-300 wheelset and some maxxis ignitors 2.1 tires. Bike is light and responsive.

Frame Frame Frame! Shimano STX Components are outdated but okay for the type of riding I do. Bought mine (a 1997 model) in 2010 and it still had original tires, which i rode for a few months. Mine is inkwell blue, bonded Easton tubes. The 18" frame weighs about 25-26 pounds. I'm 6'0" and 210 and this frame is strong and rigid. It fits me perfectly.

None that I can complain about. Again, not the best components but plenty adequate for commuting, pleasure cruising and light XC / trail / hard pack riding.

As for who should buy this bike I think anyone who wants the best of both worlds-road commuter and XC / Trail-should give this bike a serious look. I'm 59 and I've been riding road bikes for decades. Last year (2008) I bought a Smith & Wesson "Tactical" MTB to see what the whole MTB thing was about. Hated the shock/fork. Sold it and went looking for a rigid frame MTB. Saw this TREK (rigid fork) and bought it as a commuter/light trail rider. I love this bike. It is nearly as quick as my Reynolds / Columbus steel framed road bikes and it's definitely a better climber. As an ex road bike snob and a newbie to these frames, all I can say is "better late than never!" This is the future of bike geometries, for me. I love that it handles the road well and can move off-road too. So many really cool places to ride to are off limits to road bikes. I'm all for MTB from now on. The TREK ZX 7000 (1997) is a fine example of a bicycle that is capable of multiple roles with few-if any-downside characteristics. I love this bike...hope to have it forever. Five flamin' Chilis ! It rocks.

Great bike the only theings i have changed in 12 years was the headset just to raise the bars a little the tryes to town and country the origanl lasted 11 years!! and i had to change the front gear selector not bad on a bike of this age!!

none i have found yet i now use it for work and have changed the tryes to town and country with these it flys along avarrage speed 25mph!!

great bike real allrounder total confidence at throwing it down a hill at high speed have thought of getting a new bike but hey this one has been so good to me over the last 12 it would be like parting with an old friend....

none its the one and only bike ive ever needed!

Light, bullet proof, great platform. I have two of these, No. 2 is parked as frame, wheels back-up now. No. 1 is dressed out as an AT tourer, panniers all around, SID fork, carbon cranks, lots of mods - it will go anywhere and get back. Not the fastest at anything, but strong and a sweet ride.

Geometry is limiting, stock component are marginal, never seemed like a fast bike to me - even stipped down. The stock RC-RTX/STX, whatever, components are nothing special.

Great platform to fix up and makes you happy to ride all day.

Bunch of hardtails, 29er.

Light, comfortable, efficient, rugged

I've turned mine into a commuter bike with some slick tires and ride-on cables. awesome awesome bike.

Light, Strong, Fairly nimble, Climbs like a mountain goat...Great bike for 1995 technology...

None really...Has been a great bike for 12 years of use... Components are not as nice as todays equipment, but it was hot lick stuff for the day...

This bike has never let me down...The stock Tioga's are bullet proof, never a single flat, and I do a lot of gravel riding... For a mtn bike, it is about as fast as they get, on road, or off road, I do a lot of street riding also, and it is a competent and predictable ride with the stock tires, if you put road tires on it, I would think that this bike would probably fly... If I were younger, I would buy this bike again...I am currently in the market for a new bike, so I am looking at Hybrids, something with a more up right position, more suspension, more technology, more asphalt oriented...

Trek 830 antelope...Trek 930 singletrack

STX-RC drivetrain. Lightweight, high quality frame consruction. Good components and gearing for the model year (1999 or so). Durable and agile.

Indy Rockshox is just marginally effective. High top tube without much angle inhibits standover. No replaceable deraileur hanger. No gear indicator on STX shifters.

This bike is great for anyone wanting a light, competent CROSS COUNTRY mountain bike. Definitely not made for dirt jumping or downhill racing. That is not what this bike was designed for. Why do people abuse a bike and then give a bad review if a frame or fork breaks? The worst original component of this bike is the Indy shock. Any 80mm shock upgrade will make it a super machine. This bike was originally not spec'd out for racing, but with a few upgrades I've lightened it and raced cross country a couple times- very happy with this bike. Climbs like a goat. Solid, Predictable handling. Nice paint. Great little hardtail! For a weekend adventurist it would probably last a lifetime.

Fisher Hoo-Koo-E-Koo. Older Mongoose Alta with Indy shock. Rockhopper.

Built to last a long long time, light

No rear shock, crossbar very high and close to nads.

I hope someday someone will read this, even though it is 2006. I rode this bike when I was 17 and 18 years old. I used to race it. Now I am 28 and I still have it. How it lasted this long I don't know. When I moved to the mountains 2 years ago I started riding it again. This thing has been to hell a few times. I am talking about four hours of slow grueling climbing over rocks. Then turning around to race down the mountain at 30mph for an hour of straight downhill. Although I have a very expensive full suspension, this bike will always have a special place in my heart. I have to think I probably have crashed this bike about 400 times. The orighinal sprocket is still on it, although really the big ring is just a bash-ring now. I have been riding mountain bikes for a long time and have rode 20 different bikes but I think I might just keep this one forever!

Is The Trek 7000 A Good Mountain Bike? [REVIEW]

Table of Contents

The Trek 7000 mountain bike, which was introduced in 1991, is not a particularly modern mountain bike.

Trek 7000

It is, however, one of the better entry-level mountain bikes available. The medium price tag, combined with the ability to climb and descend some easy hills, has made it a favorite among mountain bikers.

Hello and welcome to the Best Bike Select blog. This post discusses the main features of the Trek 7000 mountain bike, what we like and dislike about it, as well as a comparison with some of the bikes currently available, which we hope will assist you in selecting the right mountain bike.

Because time is running out, let’s get started.

Features of Trek 7000 mountain bike

Aluminum frame (4.5/5).

Trek 7000 hybrid

The frame of the 1991 Trek 7000 is made of Easton 7129 E9 tapered aluminum tubing. Alpha ZX aluminum was used in the latest version of Trek 7000 in 2000.

The frame’s quality has greatly improved. Because the aluminum frame will become weak and even break after more than 5 years of use.

And the Alpha ZX aluminum frame patches on the solution to this problem, extending its life beyond ten years and allowing it to stay with you for longer if it is not a regular rough ride.

The steeper 71° head tube angle is ideal for climbing and, on steeper trails, not only brings out but improves on the benefits of a hardtail mountain bike. However, some skill is required on steep downhill trails. However, all of these are relegated to technical riding.

The Trek 7000 should be considered for its intended use, which is to ride on smaller hills with greater ease. And the frame weight is extremely light at 25.16 pounds, which is comparable to some of the current light trail mountain bikes.

Front Fork (4.2/5)

Trek 7000 multitrack

Aluminum and magnesium forks are more common in low and mid-range mountain bikes these days, which is why they are lighter. With a travel of 80mm (3.15″), this is still a good entry-level mountain bike.

The stock fork also includes a retractable dust cover to keep it clean. This is something that is difficult to notice on new mountain bikes. Perhaps the more active magnesium metal used in the fork makes it more corrosive.

The fork-linked front wheel lacks a quick release, and the barrel-axle front wheel lacks ease of installation, but I really like it. It has the potential to improve the ride’s stability. Perhaps this is why I prefer older mountain bikes as well.

Drivetrain (4.1/5)

Trek 7000 Drivetrain

The Trek 7000 from 1991 has a 3X7 drivetrain. The 2000 Trek 7000, on the other hand, has been upgraded to 3X9. More gears equals a greater range of shifting. It’s not just for mountain biking.

The smallest rear gear is an 11-tooth pinion, and the flywheel’s 22-tooth gears work in tandem, making it ideal for steep hills, and the ride is fast thanks to a 2x transmission ratio.

Alloy cable pull brake (3.5/5)

Trek 7000

I’m not a fan of this type of brake, but I understand that it’s a 20-year-old design. After puddle riding, the Trek 7000’s brakes increase the braking distance. Large downhill brakes necessitate more braking force.

The power provided by your hands determines the effectiveness of your braking. It’s not very convenient, but the construction is low-cost and the braking effect is adequate.

It is still recommended that you upgrade to disc brakes, which does not come cheap, but the improved riding experience is well worth it.

Tires (4.5/5)

The width of the front and rear tires on the Trek 7000 differs slightly, front: 26 x 2.10″ Bontrager Jones AC, rear: 26 x 2.00″ Bontrager Jones AC, because the front tires provide enough grip during descents with the brakes.

Furthermore, the rear tire must provide adequate grip during normal riding or climbing. As a result, it’s an unusual but effective combination.

Commuters will appreciate the versatility of the 26″ tires, which are ideal for crowded streets or small, constantly changing terrain.

ICON Onyx handlebars (4.5/5)

Trek 7000-ON Onyx handlebars

Despite the fact that Trek is primarily using Bontrager alloy handlebars, the quality of the Trek 7000 handlebars is not bad.

Ergonomic design and a comfortable grip. It also employs different handlebar lengths and frame sizes to accommodate the differences between men and women.

Saddle (4.3/5)

The Trek 7000 was first used with the Trek System 2 saddle. The Bontrager FS 2000 was also used in the Trek 7000 in the year 2000. In some forums and reviews, neither saddle has received many complaints. The Bontrager FS 2000 saddle is more durable.

Comparison table

Trek x-caliber 8 mountain bike vs trek 7000.

trek zx 7000 price

The new Trek X-Caliber 8 mountain bike outperforms the Trek 7000 in so many ways that it’s not just a good mountain bike, but also a more advanced commuter bike.

Alpha Gold Aluminum frame, 100mm travel RockShox Judy SL Fork, 29×2.35″ (XS, S, 27.5×2.35″), 1X12 speed drivetrain, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc are included. All of these improvements add up to a selling price of around $1500.

The X-Caliber 8 is ideal for long rides because it was designed specifically for off-road use. It is all about losing weight. Despite weighing 3 pounds more than the Trek 7000, However, the design of the front fork compensates for this.

The Judy SL 100mm shock fork from RockShox features a TurnKey locking mechanism and a lighter, more adjustable air spring rather than a coil spring.

If you believe these accessories cannot be upgraded, please let us know. No, it isn’t flawless. The tires can be upgraded to a whopping 2.8″ wide for even more grip, propelling the bike forward with each pedal stroke like a throttle click.

The original fork has a travel of 100mm. It is upgradeable to a maximum of 120mm. This makes intense riding a lot more enjoyable. The Trek X-Caliber 8 mountain bike is a great mountain bike to try out if you like to ride long distances.

Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike vs Trek 7000

Trek Marlin 7

The Trek Marlin 7 is very stylish, and I really like the Marigold to Radioactive Red Fade. Besides the great paint color, the Trek Marlin 7 also has a clean, crisp internal alignment.

The relaxed head tube angle and comfortable ride are also the main features of the Trek Marlin 7. The same aluminum frame as the Trek 7000 is used. But the body weight is going to be about 4 lbs. in the middle. Not a very excessive weight change.

According to the official website, the Trek Marlin 7 mountain bike is a model that can compete with their high-end race bikes. Taking a closer look at its configuration, the 1X10 drivetrain, which is not very broad but crosses the line into a race model, can be interpreted as a popular version of the 3X10 Trek 7000.

The mid-range configuration of the RockShox Judy, the entry-level model for trail riding, is also consistent with the width of the Trek 7000’s tires in the 2.2-inch model.

However, the brakes are a good buy, with hydraulic disc brakes comparable to Trek’s sub-$3,000 mountain bikes. The Trek Marlin 7 is an excellent replacement for the Trek 7000, and if you like the Trek 7000, the Trek Marlin 7 will be its heir.

SANTA CRUZ Bronson Carbon R Mountain Bike vs Trek 7000

trek zx 7000 price

The SANTA CRUZ Bronson is a high-end race mountain bike, but there is a difference between the front and rear tires of the Trek 7000: [front] 29 x 2.5 inches, [rear] 27.5 x 2.4 inches.

This 150mm travel trail bike has stable geometry and a 29in front wheel that helps us plow through bomb holes and stay upright over drops, while the 27.5in rear wheel allows for quick cornering and precise split-second moves. rolls, sharp cornering turns, and more.

So it’s a super agile mountain bike with extremely loose geometry that can handle difficult climbs with ease. So you prefer faster and more agile trail riding? Try out the SANTA CRUZ Bronson Carbon R Mountain Bike.

Schwinn High Timber vs Trek 7000

Schwinn High Timber Mountain Bike

If the Schwinn High Timber raced the Trek 7000 in the woods, it’s safe to say that the Schwinn High Timber would lose. The Schwinn High Timber mountain bike is preferred by commuters and casual riders because it is designed for trails and community riding.

Get back to what you thought you were doing when you first bought your mountain bike and abandon the intense mountain riding. If the Trek 7000 mountain bike had a V8 engine, it would be a V8 engine.

And, because the Schwinn High Timber has a V6, can it be ridden in the mountains? Would it have the same feel as a Trek 7000? No, not at all. As a result, your budget is constrained, and you can choose the Schwinn High Timber based on its accessories.

As a result, the Schwinn High Timber is the ideal mountain bike for commuters.

Final Verdict (4.1/5)

After 5 hours of consulting forums and related reviews, the Trek 7000’s early configuration is equivalent to a high-end version of today’s low-cost mountain bikes. I also like this mountain bike. The initial price is less than $1000, and the 2000 Trek 7000 is $1019.99.

The price is thought to be sufficient to purchase a mid-range configuration mountain bike. As a result, it’s a pleasant ride on simple woodland singletrack and commuter roads. As a result, we gave this mountain bike a 4.1 rating.

A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS

Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.

The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.

LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR

Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Trek 7100 Review: Features and Specifications

Frame and fork.

If you’re looking for a hybrid bike that’s built to last and can handle a variety of terrains, the frame and fork are two components you want to pay close attention to. After all, they’re the backbone of the bike, providing stability and support as you ride.

Fortunately, the Trek 7100 has you covered in both departments. At the core of this bike is an Alpha white aluminum frame that’s designed to be both lightweight and strong. It’s built to last, so you won’t have to worry about it giving up on you after just a few rides.

trek zx 7000 price

In addition to the frame, the fork is also an important component of any bike. The Trek 7100 comes equipped with a preload adjustable SR Suntour NEX fork that offers 50mm of travel.

This means that it can absorb the shock and vibrations that come with riding on rough or bumpy roads, providing a smoother and more comfortable ride.

And since the Trek 7100 is built for paved roads and city streets, the fork provides enough protection from road noise to make your ride more enjoyable.

But it’s not just about comfort – the Trek 7100 is designed to be efficient and fast, too. The steep head tube angle allows it to handle uphill and downhill commutes with ease, making it a great choice for riders who want a bike that can keep up with them.

Gears and Brakes

When it comes to hybrid bikes, having a wide gear range is crucial to getting the most out of your ride. It’s what allows you to smoothly transition between different speeds and handle a variety of terrains.

The Trek 7100 delivers on this front, thanks to its high-quality components. With 7-speed SRAM shifters and Shimano M191 front derailleur, you’ll be able to shift gears smoothly and easily, even when you’re going up steep hills or facing strong headwinds.

trek zx 7000 price

And with an SRAM X3 rear derailleur, you can trust that your bike will handle whatever terrain you’re on.

But it’s not just about the gears – the brakes are just as important when it comes to the overall performance of a hybrid bike.

That’s why the Trek 7100 comes equipped with Tektro linear pull brakes that provide reliable stopping power when you need it. And when you’re navigating crowded city streets, you can trust that these brakes will help keep you safe and in control.

The combination of these components is what sets the Trek 7100 apart from other hybrid bikes on the market.

It’s built to deliver the performance of a road bike, but with the comfort and versatility of a hybrid bike. This makes it a great choice for commuting, exercising, or just getting around your neighborhood.

And despite being a low-end SRAM twist shifter, the performance of the Trek 7100’s gearing system is nothing to scoff at.

With a 21-speed set-up, you’ll have a wide range of gears to choose from, allowing you to customize your ride to your preferences.

Plus, the shifts are quick and easy, so you won’t have to worry about fumbling with the gears while on the go.

Wheels and Tires

The wheels and tires of a bike play a crucial role in its performance, and Trek 7100 hybrid bike has impressive wheels and tires that make it stand out from other bikes in its class.

trek zx 7000 price

It has Bontrager H4 tires, which are sized at 700 x 35c and known for accelerating quickly on flat trails. They are perfect for smooth roads and provide excellent traction, especially when combined with the 3X7 drivetrain.

Even though it’s not as fast as a road bike, the 7100 is more comfortable to ride than many road bikes in the same price range. I believe comfort is important for commuters who spend a lot of time on their bike.

The rims also feature the same high-quality construction as the rest of the bike’s components. It’s a Bontrager 550 36-hole alloy rims, which are double-walled to ensure durability.

From experience, I’d say the combination of road bike tires and strong alloy rims make the Trek 7100 an excellent commuter bike.

Saddle and Handlebars

The Trek 7100 has a wide, well-padded saddle that offers great comfort for your backside, especially on longer rides. The flexible suspension seatpost is an added bonus, as it provides additional protection from impacts on the road.

And you can easily customize your riding position to suit your comfort level, since the seat height can be adjusted for a good fit.

trek zx 7000 price

The handlebars are Bontrager Approved with a solid steel build and a 50mm rise. This design allows you to ride with a comfortable posture that reduces stress on your shoulders, back, and neck.

Trek 7100 also has an adjustable stem; a great feature that lets you fine-tune your bike’s fitting to your specific needs. The stem allows you to adjust the height of the handlebars, and by doing so, you can achieve a more comfortable riding position for your body type and riding style.

This feature is especially important when you’re going on long rides, as you may need to adjust your position frequently to avoid fatigue.
