WATCH: Cruise Passengers Share Terrifying Videos from 'Nightmare' Storm at Sea

The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship made it back to port safely on Saturday after being stuck in a storm between the Bahamas and Charleston, S.C. for 15 hours

video of cruise ship sailing

The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship made it back to port nine hours later than planned after sailing through a terrifying storm on Friday night.

The ship was on its way to Charleston, S.C. from the Bahamas when it got caught in severe weather, including nearly 80 mph winds. Passengers on board shared details and footage of the chaos and destruction caused by the storm on social media. Thankfully, Carnival told PEOPLE in a statement provided below that "no one was seriously injured."

Crew Center, a cruise ship information site, posted a video on Twitter showing a flooded hallway, torn-off doors and other debris and destruction on board.

"The aftermath aboard Carnival Sunshine after a severe storm," the post read. "The crew from Deck 0-4 evacuated to the theater, and anywhere they could rest… the crew bar destroyed."

brad morrell/storyful

Passenger Daniel Taylor told Newsweek that the captain made an announcement around 4:45 p.m. saying that they would be experiencing a delay due to "adverse weather conditions," expressing that they "would do everything they could to minimize discomfort.

By dinner time, public decks had been closed off, and plates and cups were flying off the buffet areas, he recalled.

By the early hours of Saturday morning, he said, "We were no longer able to see where we were going, how fast we were going, what the wind speed was, or anything. We were blind to what was going on." Swells were hitting the ship "over and over," said Taylor, who also recalled seeing crew members wearing life vests.

At that point, the internet was also out, so those on board couldn't get any additional information or reach loved ones.

Matthew Branham, who was also on board, told The Washington Post , that "waves were hitting the boat so hard that it was like an earthquake experience, jarring you like a really rough roller coaster — even in the middle floor."

TVs were falling off walls and glasses shattering. “You could not stand up in your room,” he said. “You could be thrown from the bed."

Another passenger, RJ Whited, wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post cited by Newsweek , "Our cruise ship last night was literally sideways and slung everything in our room breaking, people in the hallways throwing up and sleeping on the stairs."

Added Whited, "We also found out that they knew about the storm and instead of us staying back to ride it out a few hours they hit it head-on so we could make it back for the other cruise to be on time."

Finally, the ship made it back to Charleston around 7:30 a.m., though it couldn't immediately dock due to continuing rough weather.

At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, the ship was able to dock.

Summing up the "nightmare" experience, passenger Christa Seifert-Alicea told NBC News 4 : "What we endured is indescribable, not only to feel it yourself but to hear and see it set in on every single person around you from adult, child and the elderly is something I will never forget."

In a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Carnival said: "Carnival Sunshine's return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. The weather's prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship's arrival and as a result, the next voyage's embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests." The statement claims that "the ship's crew followed our protocols for rough weather" noting, "thankfully, no one was seriously injured."

"The weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecasted," the statement continues. "Given the circumstances as they were, the ship's officers and our Fleet Operations Center team using real time meteorology data coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location. Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous. The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear." The cruise line's statement also said that the captain "made several announcements about the weather and the delay" but noted "some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made."

The Carnival Sunshine is already on its next voyage, the cruise line confirmed.

A Naked Cruise Adventure in the Adriatic

The stunning boat in the Adriatic

Sailing Au Naturel on a Cruise in the Adriatic

By Chris Moore

The warm breeze was just enough to ripple the 42 canvas sails stretched taut above me. The sun lifted over the horizon as I stood on deck with coffee in hand.

Koversada_Croatia naturist resort

Next to me, a woman was sitting, cross-legged, straight-backed, and with eyes closed – I wondered what she was thinking. A few yards away, a couple stood together watching the start of another day in paradise. We did not speak – we did not need to.

We were warm, comfortable, and naked. This was day eight of our two-week nude Aegean adventure aboard the world’s largest Clipper and we were sailing down Europe’s southernmost fjord.

We had left our worries and clothes behind and wore nothing but a smile. If we had been any more relaxed, we would have been horizontal.

Sailaway on the Royal Clipper

A week earlier, on a steamy Saturday afternoon in late June, my wife and I joined 200 other guests in Venice’s San Basilio terminal to board our magnificent, temporary floating home. With its five masts, the majestic Clipper was turning heads as tourists and locals sped by on the vaporettos.

We greeted friends old and new like excited school children on the first day of term. We had migrated from all over the world – Canada, Germany, Australia, USA, South Africa, and the UK and were now standing on deck, champagne in hand as Vangelis’ 1492 Conquest of Paradise boomed over the ship’s speakers – a sure sign we were about to leave land behind.

“Sailaway” – that magic moment when the captain gives the nod to weigh the anchor and set the sails – is a grand occasion. As the crew hoist the sails (somewhat disappointingly with a push of a button rather than a hearty heave-ho) and assisted by a couple of tugs, we floated gracefully past the tourists in St. Mark’s Square.

The Royal Clipper next to a much larger cruise ship in the Mediterranean.

Soon, we were gliding past San Giorgio Maggiore and into open water. The tugs left us and, finally, with a long aaaaagh that sounded like “Freeeedom”, we lost our clothes. We turned south and headed to Ravenna.

A Peek into Naturism

There are any number of themed cruises available today and when it comes to those advertised as “clothing optional” or “nude”, it’s best to be very clear about the nature of the cruise. Our Bare Necessities cruise was naturist – not clothing optional, “lifestyle”, “Swingers” or anything else.

Naturism is about being comfortable naked in a social environment and respecting others without judgment. Losing one’s clothes is a very liberating feeling. As our clothes fell to the floor, so did our inhibitions and many of our life’s stresses.

Pula, Croatia, a stop on the journey

You really have nothing to hide, and without the adornment of clothing, it’s very difficult to judge people or peg them into a certain box.

It doesn’t matter what title you have (we’ve met doctors, professors, and reverends), what job you do (there were three anesthetists,  teachers,  and a part-time janitor), or how much money you have – we are all the same.

Removing our Prejudices

Removing our prejudices along with our underwear is a great leveler and makes for a much more open, tolerant, and respectful environment.

Many of the passengers were seasoned naturists and returning sailors. In fact, according to Bare Necessities – the US travel company that has been chartering ships and organizing nude cruises for over 25 years – the passenger return rate is almost 80%. A staggering number given the industry average is nearer 30%. Two similar tours for 2024 are already fully booked. There’s a reason people keep on returning.

Dubrovnik

Star Clippers – a privately owned Swedish company – owns and operates three tall ships, the largest of these being the 440-foot steel-hulled Royal Clipper which, with five masts and 42 sails, is indeed a regal sight. Our ocean-view stateroom was more spacious than we had anticipated – a double bed, wardrobe, and plenty of cupboard space.

A large space under the bed was ideal for storing empty suitcases. (Yes, even naturists have suitcases.) A separate bathroom with a shower completed our temporary home. The clever use of mirrors made it seem larger than it really was and, with two portholes, light and airy.

We were given our “pass” – a plastic “credit card” that would be key to everything over the next couple of weeks; it opened our cabin door and was the “key” to getting on and off the ship. We learned not to leave home without it!

A Naked Itinerary

Climbing the Royal Clipper

Our itinerary would take us east to Croatia then south towards Montenegro before heading back north to San Marino and finally Venice.

We could be nude anywhere on board except in the dining room when docked at port, or when there was a pilot on board.

We had two sea days with long, lazy hours sprawled out on a sun lounger with a multicolored drink in hand, laughing and building friendships with like-minded, happy, and equally naked people.

Our first stop was Pula on Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula, famous for its impressive and wonderfully preserved Roman amphitheater.

Shore excursions were available at every port of call for those keen to walk like sheep behind a flag-carrying guide. This is not our thing, so we wandered off to explore on our own.

In a number of places, the ship was unable to enter the small-town harbors, so we were tendered to shore; the tenders shuttled back and forth to the ship giving us enormous flexibility.

Tours to local naturist resorts or nude beaches were also offered for those who wished to feel the sand between their toes. The water was clear, sparkling, and beautifully warm. However, much of the Croatian coastline is rocky and pebbly and sand is only to be found at the bottom of the sea some yards away.

Leaving Pula, we hop-scotched down the coast to “Game of Thrones” fans’ favorite, Dubrovnik, popping into Krk, Zadar, Split, and Korcula along the way. Each stop offered Instagram-ready photos of colourful harbors, ancient ruins, magnificent churches, and impressive walled cities.

In Dubrovnik – in grave danger of becoming “over touristy” – my wife and I hired a local guide from WithLocals for a personal tour. This is a much more intimate, fun, and rewarding way to see a new place, and well worth an extra few Euros. We met Anastasia the cat (Google Anastasia Dubrovnik Cat), a local couple still living within the walls of the Old City selling an array of herbs and spices, and walked the route of Cersei’s Walk of Shame – GOT fans will know what I’m talking about.

In the Adriatic

Back Onboard

Returning hot and sweaty from one of the excursions, we approached the ship on a tender and could see the marina platform at the back of the ship was open.

We boarded the ship and immediately made our way straight to the stern removing our clothing almost without breaking stride.

We were on the marina deck and ready to skinny dip in the inviting, gin-clear Adriatic in seconds. Our eagle-eyed crew was on hand to look out for our safety.

Now this is the way to cool off after a very hot and sticky morning of plodding around historic, picturesque towns. We climbed out of the water, toweled off, and stopped off at the “we never close” bar before collapsing on our sun loungers.

“Where did we leave our clothes?” I asked my wife. “Can’t remember” she shrugged. Never mind.

Sailing north back towards Venice, we stopped off in San Marino – a rather mythical place I thought, lost somewhere in Italy. I knew very little about it but what a delightful place.

The charming medieval walled old town and quaint, narrow cobblestone streets set on a mountain top from where you can see for miles are worth the effort of a short hilly climb. You can also get your passport stamped here from one of the world’s oldest, and smallest, republics though, strictly speaking, it’s a tourist stamp, and some killjoy governments will tell you it’s illegal to “deface” a passport. We paid 5 Euros and got ours stamped anyway.

Sailing on this beautiful tall ship is a truly unique experience whether you are clothed or not. The Michelin-starred chef prepared delicious food and our sommelier provided us with the perfect wine pairings. We visited interesting places and enjoyed the company of like-minded people and the ability to do this sans clothes gave us a tremendous sense of freedom, relaxation, and wellbeing.

Our favorite location was at the stern of the ship where we would watch land slip away or the sun dip below the horizon. We sipped drinks with names like “Hugo” and “Yellowbird”, exchanged war stories with new friends, and put the world to rights, blissfully unaware that we were all still naked.

Chris Moore

We stretched out like cats in front of the hearth and didn’t want the sun to go down – ever. The sky was cloudless, and we hadn’t a care in the world.

Thank you for reaching out. I’m glad you enjoyed the article. Enjoying the naturist lifestyle aboard the Royal Clipper really is a wonderful experience.

Sadly, Venice is becoming overrun with tourists nowadays (I have a separate article on sustainable travel). You can follow my travel adventures on Instagram at ukchris_traveljournalist

Regards from Midwest. Chris

Very well written, Chris, and a great reminder for me of three different experiences of mine that you managed to combine in one: a cruise on a Star Clipper (Panama Canal); visits to Croatia and Venice; and naturism. Regards from a fellow (former) Michigander, Buzzy

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

By Li Cohen

Updated on: May 2, 2024 / 8:20 AM EDT / CBS News

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service.

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea.

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

@cbsmornings Would you dare to set sail on a nude cruise? 🚢 Cruisebare's upcoming full-ship nude cruise, departing from Miami in February next year, is making waves. Even #TonyDokoupil is down to go. 🌊 #cruises #vacation #experience #miami #sail ♬ original sound - CBS Mornings

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count.

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent.

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all."

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."

Travelers aboard luxury cruise ships faced bumpy waters as they made their way through what is considered the most dangerous voyage in the world through the Drake Passage.

Video captured aboard one luxury cruise ship showed how dangerous the trek can be. Tall waves hit the boat and furniture slid across the flooded deck.

Drake Passage is considered one of the most treacherous bodies of water in the world and is the point where the Pacific, Atlantic, and Antarctic oceans all meet.

Travel influencer Garrett Talcott was trying to enjoy dinner on a cruise ship last month as the ship made the bumpy ride through the passage.

“I was literally grabbing everything on the table and trying to manage. If I want to eat, how am I going to do this," Talcott says.

The choppy ride continued as Talcott attempted to stay upright on his way back to his room.

“The ship was tilted on its side, the ship director said it was anywhere from 100 to 110 miles an hour which are definitely hurricane speed winds," Talcott tells Inside Edition.

Another passenger, Alyssa Ramos, experienced a similar situation while on a cruise ship last year passing through Drake Passage but decided to make the most of it.

Ramos and other passengers decided to participate in the “Drake Passage Slide,” where you lay down and slide along the deck as the waves rock the ship back and forth.

"It's just a really unsettling feeling because you're going up and down like a ride that makes your stomach drop and then you're going side to side,” Ramos tells Inside Edition.

In 2022 a 62-year-old woman died while aboard a ship traveling through the passage after a wave smashed her cabin window, causing her to be hit by the glass shards. Her husband was also in the room but survived the tragic incident.

Carnival Cruise Line brings new ship to New Orleans, celebrates 30th anniversary

C arnival Cruise Line celebrates 30 years of sailing a new ship out of the Port of New Orleans by making New Orleans its permanent home.

The Carnival Liberty will make a berth in New Orleans and sail out of the port year-round along with the Carnival Valor.

The Liberty arrived in port Monday morning and was welcomed in by Carnival’s Chief Culinary Officer and New Orleans icon Emeril Lagasse, Port NOLA President and CEO Brandi Christian, and Carnival Cruise Line executives.

Carnival launched the first year-round cruise program from New Orleans in 1994 and over the years has expanded the number of ships, capacity, and cruise options, carrying approximately 5 million guests.

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

video of cruise ship sailing

A Royal Caribbean International Alaska voyage became a cruise to nowhere over the weekend, with the line canceling the sailing after guests had already boarded.

The cruise line’s Radiance of the Seas ship experienced propulsion issues, forcing it to shorten and eventually scrap the weeklong itinerary, according to notices shared with guests. The sailing was originally set to depart from Vancouver on Friday.

Charlene Chong, who was on board with her husband, their 3-year and 11-month-old children, and her parents, said passengers were notified Saturday afternoon that the cruise was canceled. The 34-year-old teacher and her husband previously took a cruise for their honeymoon, but this marked their first trip with Royal Caribbean.

“My parents had wanted to go to Alaska for a really long time,” said Chong, who lives in Vancouver.

The cruise line warned guests several days before boarding that the ship had a “technical issue with its propulsion system,” according to an email sent to passengers that Chong shared with USA TODAY. The line later pushed the departure back by two days to allow more time for repairs.

Royal Caribbean said boarding would proceed as planned but that the terminal would close Friday evening due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules. Passengers would not be able to leave until the ship arrived at Icy Strait Point.

“We were going stir crazy a little bit,” said Chong.

Royal Caribbean gave guests onboard credit worth two days of their fare, a future cruise credit of the same amount, complimentary drinks and other compensation, another email said.

According to Chong, the ship sailed toward a nearby cargo port, but the captain announced Saturday afternoon that the sailing could not proceed and that guests would need to disembark by Sunday at 4 p.m. Chong said she and her family were “lucky” they were local, but she saw other guests scrambling to change their flights and find accommodations.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

“We understand the disappointment due to this unfortunate turn of events,” the cruise line said in a letter shared with guests. “We truly extend our sincerest apologies for the continued unforeseen disruptions to your vacation.”

Royal Caribbean gave them their money back as onboard credit with any remaining amount refunded, increased their future cruise credit to 100% of their fare and kept its open-bar policy for the remaining time on board. The line also offered to reimburse trip change fees up to $250 for guests traveling domestically and $400 for international travel and additional reimbursements for hotel and transportation costs, among other compensation.

“Due to a technical issue, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 26 sailing," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Guests will receive a full refund and 100% future cruise credit, and have been notified directly.” The spokesperson did not comment on the specifics of Chong's experience.

The ship will resume service for its May 3 sailing.

After they got home, Chong and her family booked a trip to Mexico instead – though her parents decided not to join as they were “a bit exhausted by the whole ordeal.” For now, she’s not inclined to use the future cruise credit. “I would like to go to Alaska,” she said. “I'm not sure if I want to go with them.”

They missed the boat — literally.

An elderly American couple was left behind by Norwegian Cruise Line in Spain this week after they returned late to the ship and the vessel refused to wait for them — despite it routinely departing behind schedule during the voyage.

“I am a very experienced traveler and have probably been on as many as 30 cruises during my lifetime,” Salt Lake City resident Richard Gordon, 84, told CNN .

“Never before have we ever missed catching a ship on time at a port. So we are not someone who abuses the system.”

Gordon and his wife Claudene, 81, had gone on an independently booked excursion to view the city of Grenada while their ship, Viva, was docked in Motril on Monday. Due to a rainstorm, they ran late for the 5:30 p.m. all-aboard time ahead of a scheduled 6 p.m. departure.

At 5:45 p.m. the Gordons, who were taking the cruise to celebrate Richard’s 85th birthday this week, notified a relative on board that they were running late but were nearby.

The family member was told that the Viva had to leave on time and would not wait. By the time the octogenarians arrived at 6:10 p.m., the boat had left the harbor, Gordon told the outlet.

“Our cruise began in Lisbon and we departed from Lisbon about one and a half hours after the scheduled departure at 4 p.m.,” he claimed.

“Then the next night or two, at least a half-hour late from the dock, so it is clear that they do not always leave on the exact moment scheduled.”

Norwegian Cruise Line departed without the elderly passengers after they missed their all-aboard time in Motril, Spain

When the Viva set sail, the Gordons were left without their medication, eyeglasses and spare hearing aid batteries, which were on board.

Back in Salt Lake City, their daughter Marilee Baker, stayed up into the wee hours of the morning trying to book her parents a flight to Palma de Mallorca, where the boat was making its next call Wednesday morning, according to CNN.

The Gordons claim Norwegian didn’t make first contact with them until late Tuesday, and by the time they got to Mallorca, they were met with a luxury taxi service to bring them to the Viva.

“They picked us up at the hotel in a beautiful black BMW limousine to take us to the ship. There we were met by the head of ship services who escorted us inside the ship to meet the general manager of the ship, then they escorted us to breakfast, then they escorted us to our cabin,” Gordon told CNN, adding the boat blamed the Motril harbormaster, who they said was supposed to organize travel with the couple.

Despite their reception, Gordon said the boat’s failure to communicate with them left a sour taste in their mouth.

The cruise line said they tried numerous times to contact the elderly couple but were unable to reach them

“The ship had not contacted us directly for two days so that doesn’t speak so well for them,” he said.

Norwegian Cruise Line disputed the couple’s account of what happened, telling The Post they were a full hour behind the 5:30 p.m. all-aboard time, and that it tried numerous times without success to contact the couple after they were left behind.

“After several attempts to contact these guests with the phone numbers provided, as well as trying to phone their emergency contact, we were unable to speak to them directly. However, we worked closely with the local port agents to make arrangements for the guests to rejoin the vessel,” a Norwegian Cruise Lines spokesperson said.

“It is important to note that a delayed departure has the potential to impact the ship’s ability to deliver its planned itinerary and thus influence the experience for all guests onboard. While this was a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The Gordons are the second set of passengers to complain about being left behind by Norwegian Cruise Lines in just a month.

Earlier in April, nine passengers — including six Americans — missed their boat in Africa and were left to fend for themselves to catch up with the boat in Senegal.

The passengers — including a paraplegic person and an elderly man with a heart condition — were left stranded on the island without any belongings like money, medicine and necessary travel documents.

Norwegian reimbursed some costs they endured while trying to make it back onto the ship, the cruise line said .

Though not waiting for passengers late by their own doing is a common procedure on cruise ships , Norwegian has faced scrutiny in recent weeks after one of the passengers left behind in Africa had recently suffered a stroke and was sent to the hospital when the ship departed.
