Japan fully reopens to tourists from Singapore on 11 October

Andrew

Great news for Japan lovers, with the news we’ve been eagerly anticipating – the popular destination is relaxing its border restrictions to allow tourists to enter visa-free and restriction-free from 11th October 2022, allowing proper two-way quarantine-free trips for the first time in over two-and-a-half years.

Singapore citizens and those holding passports issued in 67 other countries are set to benefit, which will see the vast majority of Lion City residents eligible to make a long-awaited trip to “the land of the rising sun” once again.

This relaxation, announced by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at a news conference in New York, will allow travellers to visit Japan without the need to make travel agency bookings in advance, nor apply for a visa in most cases.

To be eligible, you must be fully vaccinated and boosted with one of Japan’s recognised vaccines, or simply have a negative pre-departure PCR test if you are unvaccinated or your jabs don’t comply (e.g. Sinovac / Sinopharm).

The loosening of restrictions comes ahead of both the autumn travel season and the winter ski season, also paving the way for the first truly “free and easy” opportunity for four years to visit Japan during the upcoming sakura (cherry blossom) period, which runs from March to May 2023.

japan visa travel agent singapore

The weak Japanese yen will also stretch your cash on a Japan trip in the short-term, with your Singapore dollar going 25% further than it did in pre-COVID times, though actually getting to and from the country looks set to be an expensive affair, with flight capacity remaining limited in the months ahead.

Japan’s reopening will come just a few days before Taiwan also intends to allow free and easy travel once again, with Hong Kong also set to remove quarantine sometime in October.

Japan’s tourism reopening

Under the latest move, from 11th October 2022 Japan will:

  • scrap its requirement for most travellers to obtain an entry visa
  • ditch the idea that you must enter under a North-Korea-style guided tour format, or with a pre-arranged travel agent booking, and
  • do away with its 50,000 person daily limit on overseas entries.

In most cases, that means you will be able to visit just like you could during pre-pandemic times, organising your own flights and hotel accommodation independently.

japan visa travel agent singapore

Japan already removed pre-departure testing for fully vaccinated travellers in early September 2022.

Who’s eligible: Nationalities

As with before COVID-19, Japan will once again allow those with one of 68 nationalities to enter visa-free for visits of up to 90 days, including Singapore Citizens.

The full list of eligible nationalities for visa-free entry into Japan from 11th October 2022 is outlined below (click to expand).

* Stays of up to six months, under bilateral agreement.

Who’s eligible: Vaccination or testing

To be eligible you’ll typically need to be fully vaccinated and have received a booster dose, in both cases from a relatively selective list of vaccines, with Sinopharm and Sinovac unfortunately not on the list.

That means having had either two or three vaccine doses, depending on which brand you received.

Japan “fully vaccinated” requirement

Vaccine doses from different brands on the above list received in combination are also acceptable, provided you have completed the primary course (any combination) and had a booster dose (of the same or a different vaccine).

For example:

  • 1st dose AstraZeneca, 2nd dose Pfizer, 3rd dose Moderna (3 doses) is acceptable
  • 1st dose J&J, 2nd dose Novavax (2 doses) is acceptable
  • 1st dose Pfizer, 2nd dose Pfizer (2 doses) is not acceptable

Note in particular that the Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines are not recognised by Japan.

Update 26 September: Japan’s Government has announced that from 11th October 2022, three doses of any WHO-approved vaccine will be regarded as acceptable for entry, including China-made Sinopharm, Sinovac and Convidecia.

All is not lost if you don’t meet the vaccination criteria though.

A negative pre-departure PCR test result within 72 hours of departure will also suffice in place of fully vaccinated and boosted status.

These tests now start at only S$50 in Singapore , a fraction of the early 2021 rates of ~S$200! There are also a wide range of options in the S$68-80 range, plus home testing from S$98.

The test certificate must be in English and the test type can be via nasal swab or the less invasive saliva method (which starts from S$88 in Singapore ).

Singapore is on the ‘Blue List’

Good news for those looking forward to a trip to Japan – Singapore is on the country’s ‘Blue List’ , whereby no testing or quarantine is required, regardless of your vaccination status.

Japan entry requirements by country category

* Pre-departure test ^ On-arrival test

Your travel history in the last 14 days prior to entry into Japan determines the category you must adhere to, with the strictest being enforced.

The full list of countries by category is  available here .

There are currently no countries on the Red List at the time of writing, but do be aware that Yellow List countries include India, Fiji, Turkey, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the Maldives .

That has potential implications if you don’t meet Japan’s strict vaccination criteria and you returned to Singapore from one of these countries in the last 14 days before a Japan trip, since you will then be subject to on-arrival PCR testing and quarantine.

What about children?

Children aged under 18 entering Japan can follow the same rules as their parent(s), even if they are not fully vaccinated, provided they are accompanied by fully vaccinated and boosted parent(s).

Japan’s reopening has been painfully slow

Japan closed its borders to non-nationals back in March 2020, with only Japanese citizens and residents eligible to enter the country for a period of over two years.

Since then it’s been a piecemeal reopening, including the following ‘milestones’, if you can call them that:

  • November 2021: Business visitors and students allowed to enter with three days of quarantine, instead of 10 days.
  • April 2022: Entry ban lifted for foreigners from over 100 countries, but they were still required to apply for a visa, which would not be granted for tourism purposes.
  • May 2022: Small groups of tourists, totalling just 50, from Singapore, Australia, Thailand and the USA, were invited to visit on prearranged package tours.
  • June 2022: Daily arrival cap doubled from 10,000 to 20,000, including returning citizens and residents. Removal of on-arrival testing and quarantine in most cases.
  • June 2022: International visitors permitted on prearranged guided package tours.
  • September 2022: Pre-departure testing removed for fully vaccinated travellers, primarily helping Japanese citizens return from overseas more easily.
  • September 2022: Daily arrival cap increased to 50,000, foreigners allowed to book non-guided tours through a travel agent (visa still required).
  • 11th October 2022: Visa-free tourist travel restarts for 68 nationalities, no daily arrival cap, fully vaccinated and boosted travellers welcome to make free and easy travel arrangements, or have a pre-departure PCR test if vaccination criteria is not met.

As you can imagine, opening to guided tour groups and travel agent itineraries with visa approval required didn’t even move the needle on inbound tourist numbers, but this latest relaxation will be a serious shift-change.

Thousands per day will now descend on Japan once the restrictions cease from 11th October, and that is already ensuring that ticket prices are sky-high and flight award space is nearly non-existent .

Prepare to be flexible with dates or part with plenty of cash just to reach Japan and return home again in the coming months.

Japan didn’t need tourists back in a hurry

Prior to the pandemic Japan welcomed over 2.6 million foreign tourists per month, prompting many to wonder why it has been so slow to reopen its borders.

However, as a rich country with a large affluent population, tourism spend only accounted for 0.8% of Japan’s gross domestic product (GDP) pre-pandemic, significantly eclipsed by its huge services and manufacturing sectors.

Even with the broader impact of tourism estimated to be around 2.2% of GDP, border reopening wasn’t a high priority for Japan like it was for countries such as Thailand, for example, where the industry drives a quarter of the economy.

In some senses it’s therefore not surprising that Japan has taken a slow and cautious approach to welcoming tourists again, despite the obvious frustration it’s caused for many of our readers eager to return!

Singapore – Japan flights (October 2022)

Japan was linked to Singapore Changi Airport by over 190 direct weekly flights prior to the pandemic, including the major cities like Tokyo and Osaka through to less-well-trodden locations like Hiroshima and Okinawa.

japan visa travel agent singapore

In October 2022 it’s a far cry from those kind of flight volumes, with only 79 direct weekly flights on offer , which means years of pent-up demand will inevitably be funnelled on less than half the number of services previously available.

Here’s how the schedule looks.

japan visa travel agent singapore

Singapore – Japan flights (from November 2022)

For the upcoming winter season starting in November 2022, there are already some planned increases on Singapore – Japan routes.

  • Tokyo from 21/wk to 28/wk
  • Osaka from 7/wk to 14/wk
  • Fukuoka from 2/wk to 3/wk
  • Tokyo from 14/wk to 21/wk
  • Tokyo from 10/wk to 14/wk
  • Osaka from 5/wk to 7/wk
  • Sapporo launches 4/wk via Taipei plus 3/wk non-stop

japan visa travel agent singapore

In total, these additional 41 flights per week will bring Singapore – Japan direct services back to 64% of pre-COVID volumes, but that almost certainly still won’t be enough to temper high fares and near-zero award space , as “revenge travel” to the country inevitably takes hold.

What about other Japan routes?

SilkAir permanently axed its non-stop flights from Singapore to Hiroshima in March 2020 due to weak demand, while there’s no word yet on whether Jetstar will restart its five-times-weekly Singapore – Okinawa services, in light of this border relaxation.

Jetstar was also serving Osaka from Singapore 22 times per week before the pandemic, via either Taipei, Manila or Clark, but no return to these routes has been confirmed at the time of writing.

japan visa travel agent singapore

Let’s hope that by cherry blossom season, starting in mid-March 2023, there will be several more options than the current published winter schedules suggest!

Awards (or a lack thereof!)

As you might imagine, award space on these limited flights between Singapore and Japan is nearly non-existent for the rest of 2022.

In common with Europe and US routes, the supply / demand equation is simply killing this option on most flights, particularly non-stop SIA-operated ones, and driving cash fares sky-high.

If you can find an award seat, here are the latest KrisFlyer award rates between Singapore and Japan, when flying on Singapore Airlines.

KFtrans

We did find some sporadic SIA Business Class award space one-way from Japan to Singapore at Advantage levels in December, but don’t be in any doubt – this isn’t a country coming up on Spontaneous Escapes any time soon!

Remember you can also use British Airways Avios points (including those transferred across 1:1 from Qatar Airways Avios points) to book oneworld awards to and from Japan with JAL.

Alaska Miles and Asia Miles are also options for oneworld flights.

No mask mandates in Japan

Japan does not legally impose mask-wearing in most settings, provided you maintain social distancing.

Mask-wearing is already optional on Singapore Airlines and Scoot flights to and from Japan, however do note that ANA, JAL and Zipair are currently maintaining their own mandatory mask mandates for all passengers.

Remember airlines are private transport operators – so you must comply with their own mask-wearing requirements, even if they are stricter than those of your origin or destination country.

It’s taken some time, but it’s fantastic to see Japan reopen its borders to visa-free tourist travel again next month, reinstating free and easy trips to and from this popular destination for Singapore citizens and those with 67 other nationalities, just like pre-COVID times.

This means from 11th October 2022 it will no longer be a requirement to make bookings through a travel agent or arrange a guided tour, nor will a visa application be necessary for most visitors.

Vaccination is still required for a hassle-free trip, but even if you don’t meet Japan’s strict “jab criteria” it’s still possible to visit with a negative pre-departure PCR test, now costing as little as S$50 in Singapore.

japan visa travel agent singapore

Sadly seat capacity on flights between Singapore and Japan is woefully poor compared to pre-COVID times, even with a few planned increases coming through from November.

Let’s hope for announcements of additional travel options between Singapore and Japan soon, since looking at both fares and award space this coming winter is enough to bring pained expression to the face of even well-versed frequent flyers.

hi, is Japan restriction ease? Still cannot find confirmation update on Japan Embassy website (Singapore).

Yes from 11th October. It will take them time to update the website, this was only announced by the PM a few hours ago.

alright. didnt see any official update so didnt dare to make bookings.

Hi Andrew, do you think that even without the update on their official website it should be safe enough to book unrefundable plane tickets (as there are great prices for now which will likely keep increasing fast)? Thanks!

are you aware if i transit in BKK onwards to Sapporo flying thai, will i be able to get into Japan as if i am flying from Singapore. Any restrictions flying from Thailand to Japan in Dec after Oct 11?

Both Singapore and Thailand are “Blue List” countries for Japan, so no issue 👍🏼

Why is Sinovac/Sinopharm Covid 19 vaccines not recognized by Japan when they are recognized by WHO? Seems like Japan does not want visitors from China.

They are recognized from 11 October onwards. See latest update here:

https://www.sg.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/PDT_00001.html

Wonder if you know for sg children under 7 years old, but not vaccinated at all, would they require PCR test, thanks?

No need pcr but must travel with adult who are fully vaccinated with booster shot

Hi Robin what if the adults are vaccinated w sinopharm and booster w novavax? They are not recognised in japan and will be taking pcr tests. What abt the children traveling with them?

There is a table (I saw is when I was browsing can’t locate it at this moment) where they show the types of vaccines are accepted by Japan’s authority.

If I can find I will share the link here.

I used to have a 5-year tourist visa to japan, but they suspended all visas in 2020 when pandemic hit. (at the same time they suspended visa waiver agreements with other countries) Now that they are lifting the latter suspension, i wonder if they will do the same to the first…

“Japan didn’t need tourists back in a hurry” the most important section in the article…Japan is and will be xenophobic…don’t that make you feel like a sucker to wanna be so desperate to go travel there?

Latest update: All vaccines on the WHO EUL list are accepted by the Japanese government for entry from 11 October onwards. Yes, that includes Sinopharm and Sinovac which were previously not recognized.

Japan Visas for Citizens of Singapore

Japan is a popular travel destination and has been for a number of years. Millions of visitors flock to the country every year from all over the world. In 2018, for instance, Japan was the host nation for over 30 million international travelers . Its vibrant culture, people, customs and cuisine make it an attractive destination for people to visit.

Aside from being a great travel destination, Japan also is a great country for businessmen as it boasts a mature economy with a global consumer base. It attracts international business professionals due to its economy’s growth potential as well as the opportunity to introduce their ventures to other major markets around the world.

This is why it should not come as a surprise that more than 437,000 Singaporean citizens visited Japan in 2018 , representing 1.4% of the total overseas travelers welcomed by the country.

There are myriads of reasons for why people choose to travel to Japan. The Japanese authorities have decided to adjust their visa application and authorization system to suit an international travel standard in order to make the process easier for the average traveler. The new Japanese eVisa promises to achieve just that .

Do I Need a Visa to Visit Japan from Singapore?

Singaporean citizens will be eligible to apply for the Japanese eVisa once it is made available. In the meantime, travelers from Singapore can apply for other visas that are offered by the Japanese government through a Japanese embassy or consulate.

The type of visa a Singaporean traveler may need depends on their travel plans and the length of their stay in the country. How long can a Singaporean citizen stay in Japan will also depend on the type of visa obtained by the applicant. There are several short-term visas that travelers can apply for, such as:

  • Japanese tourist visa : This visa is appropriate for travelers that are interested in taking up touristic activities while in Japan. It allows travelers a stay of up to 90 days in the country and can be obtained either as a single-entry or as a double-entry visa.
  • Japanese business visa : For individuals interested in short-term business engagements, the Japanese business visa should work well. It is also available either as a single- or double-entry visa.
  • Japanese transit visa : This visa is required by people who will be stopping over in Japan on their way to another country.

Singaporean travelers that need to stay in Japan longer than a few months may be eligible to apply for a Japanese long-term visa . There are several different types of long-term visas that travelers from Singapore can apply for. Travelers from Singapore can scan the list of available long-term visas and the associated requirements to select one that best suits their travel needs.

Japanese eVisa for Singaporean Citizens

Once the Japanese eVisa is rolled out, Singaporean citizens will be able to apply for the eVisa online without having to go through an embassy or consulate. It has been specifically designed to simplify the application of a Japanese visa for short-term stays in the island nation.

Once the Japanese eVisa becomes available, Singaporean nationals will have to apply for the Japanese eVisa by filling out an online application with their personal, passport and travel details.

They will also be required to answer some security questions concerning any past criminal offences or other legal violations. Travelers are required to answer these questions as honestly as possible, making sure the information they provide is accurate and matches the information shown on the applicant’s other travel documents.

Japanese Visa Requirements for Singaporean Citizens

In order to obtain a Japanese visa, there are certain requirements that applicants must fulfill in order to ensure a successful application. These requirements include:

  • Having a valid passport with at least 2 blank pages and a validity that covers the traveler’s duration of stay in Japan (advisable: 6 months validity)
  • A signed and completed visa application form
  • A recent photo of the traveler taken against a white background
  • A secondary identification document such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, etc.
  • If the traveler is married, a marriage certificate will be required as well
  • Travel itinerary including intended date of travel, place of accommodation during the trip, etc.

If the traveler has been sponsored for their trip to Japan by a Japanese sponsor or guarantor, some additional documentation must be submitted along with the application:

  • A letter from the sponsor/guarantor explaining the relationship between the traveler and the sponsor/guarantor
  • Proof of the relationship between the sponsor/guarantor and the traveler
  • Sponsor/guarantor’s proof of sufficient funds for the traveler’s trip to the country

If applicants do not have a sponsor/guarantor, then they need to submit their own proof of sufficient funds in the form of a recent bank certificate and a copy of their income tax return.

What Can Singaporean Citizens Expect from the New Japanese eVisa?

The Japanese eVisa is currently being developed by the Japanese government as a single-entry eVisa to automatically evaluate a traveler’s details in order to determine their eligibility to travel to the country. Once all details regarding the eVisa have been finalized, more updates will be made available on this website.

JAPAN VISA: LIST OF TRAVEL AGENCIES Accredited by the Embassy

JAPAN VISA: LIST OF TRAVEL AGENCIES Accredited by the Embassy

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Because of the sheer volume of applications, the Japanese Embassy doesn’t accept direct or walk-in applications, except in rare special cases. Instead, tourist and visit visa applications must be coursed through an officially designated travel agency, which will then compile and submit the applications in bulk.

The downside of this system, of course, is the service fee. The embassy’s processing of the visa is FREE-OF-CHARGE. But the travel agency will collect a service charge per application. But this system has ensured a fast, efficient way to process visa applications. In fact, the Korean Embassy has followed suit and employed a similar model recently. The fee varies from agency to agency, so if budget is a concern, contact them before showing up at their office.

Here’s how to apply for a Japan visa:

✅ tourist visa requirements, ✅ visit visa requirements.

Below is the list of all travel agencies that are accredited by the Japanese Embassy. Of these, we were able to try Attic Tours (Roxas Blvd), Reli Tours (SM Megamall), and Friendship Tours (Dusit Thani), and we didn’t encounter any problem with any of them.

I was just wondering if you were able to verify Universal Holiday’s Cebu branch ‘coz I am seeing a Cebu branch in their site but it is not listed in your page nor in the official site. I have tried this branch before and would really like to use their service again.

Yosh Dimen

Hi Mat, I think legit naman sya kasi yung accreditation ng Japan Embassy yata ay per company, hindi per branch. So since accredited yung Universal Holiday, most likely kasama lahat ng branches nila.

Mat

Update! I applied for multiple entry at the Cebu branch and thankfully na.approve naman. I asked them why they were not listed and I think it has something to do with limitation of what type of visa they were allowed to apply. Nakalimutan ko ano exactly yun. Hehehe. Yung inaply ko tourist visa w/o sponsor which is pwd nila i.process.

Thanks for the reply.

Patricia

Hello! Do I really need to apply a Japan visa in an accredited travel agency?

All applications will go through an accredited agency. But you can apply at other non-accredited agencies, but they will still course it through an accredited agency rin so mas mahal sya.

Nel

Hi For the visa application, since I just had my passport renewed, and of course it is all empty though i had made multiple travels in the past 5 years and it is all in the old passport. What can you advise for such? Would it matter if my new passport is empty? or should i send in also the copy of my old one? just to show that i have record of my old trips?

Hi Nel, I can’t say for sure because I had a different experience each time I applied. There was a time when the agency also took my old passport too. There were also times when they did not. So I’m not sure what the protocol is.

My advice is to just bring your old passport when you visit the agency and ask them for their reco. :D

Charmaine

I just wanted know po if it is possible that the applicant, being a student, his guarantor will not be his parents? His girlfriend will have to support and shoulder his travel expenses as a graduation gift for him. Would this be acceptable? Thank you in advance po.

Hi Charmaine, I haven’t tried something like this, so I don’t know for sure. But the biggest challenge here is proving the relationship.

According to the travel agency we consulted before, it’s still better if the sponsor is a close relative because you can easily prove the relationship using birth certificates.

Best to consult the travel agency where you will lodge your application.

Hello good evening i apply japanese visa to traveland here in Sagay city…. Many documents needed from my japanese guarantor …and i comply it all but im waiting the original documents from japan because traveland ask me to bring along with me original documents from my guarantor or the person who invites me ..im hoping you will answer me about my few questions …it is needed to have an interview in japanese embassy? Hi Maji, if you’re visiting Japan for a short stay only, usually there is no interview.

May plan po kami ng family ko na mag tourist visit sa Japan this year at ako po yung representative applicant. ask ko lang po sana apart po sa akin if kailangan din po ba yung wife ko at nung anak ko na adult ( 19y/o) na mag provide requirements such, employment cert., bank cert and ITR? Thanks

Hi ian, ang alam ko po, if kayo ung sasagot ng gastos, no need na for your wife and child. Basta same time kayo mag-apply.

Yung experience ko po kasi nung sinagot ko ung trip ng nanay ko and pamangkin ko, documents ko lang po ung sinubmit.

Pero tawag na lang din po kayo sa agency kung saan kayo mag-apply to be safe.

Depends on agency and type of visa. Tourist visas usually range P700-1000, Visit visas P1500-P2000. Call the agency where you plan to apply to be certain.

Karmela

Hi, I am a bit confused because there is actually another list in the Japan embassy website specifying the accredited agencies. I think there were only 7 listed (UHI, friendship, Panpacific, Reli, etc.). For the list you specified here, ang nakalagay sa embassy site is List of Registered Agencies. May difference ba ang dalawa?

Hi Karmela,

Thanks for raising this. We emailed the embassy to clarify. Hopefully they’d respond soon. :D

MJ

Perhaps di lang naupdate ni Japan Embassy yung website nila? When I checked din kasi sa website ng Japan Embassy, sa lower part, it shows na parang 2014 pa yata yung last update nila dun sa site.

Not sure. Let’s wait for the confirmation from the embassy.

I just received feedback from the embassy. Here’s their reply:

Accredited agencies are agencies that directly submit visa application to our office. Registered agencies are those allowed to handle package tours for Japan and they need to submit the applications to any of our accredited agencies.

Thanks, Karmela.

Nagreply na rin sila sa amin pero di nila nasagot ung question exactly. Anyway, we updated the post na rin. Thanks for sharing this. :)

Japan visa policy.

Visitors who intend to visit Japan are expected to obtain a visa from Japanese diplomatic missions abroad before they are allowed into the country unless they are citizens of visa-exempt countries. One of the important documents visitors must possess is a valid passport which must remain valid throughout their stay in the country. The policy also clearly explains the different visitor categories based on nationality, and it also states the types of visas, their purposes, duration, and validity.

Obtaining a visa for Japan is relatively easy because the government has introduced different application processes to aid in such endeavors. In addition, there are different visas for pleasure, business, study, and many other options. Currently, visitors from 129 countries require visas or authorization to enter Japan, which may be short or long-stay visas, and Long-stay visas require visas with a validity of one year or more. As for visa-free access, 68 countries are on Japan’s visa-free list, and visitors from these countries can reside there for a short period.

Japan’s Visa-Free Countries

Japan has a list of visa free countries whose citizens are free to enter its territories without visas. The list comprises mostly EU and other first world nations but the list is constantly updated in line with Japan's diplomatic realities.

The Japan E Visa

The Japanese e-visa is a special online visa that is available for visitors from a few countries.

The e-visa or electronic visa was introduced by the government of Japan in 2019 to simplify the visa application process and to ease its embassies and foreign missions abroad. This e-visa is designed for citizens from the countries listed above.

The visa can be applied online and issued for tourism, business, and transit.

E visas are single-entry visas that allow holders to stay in Japan for up to 30 days. It can only be used once, and you can only stay for a month. However, if you get a special extension you can stay for much longer. Extensions are granted at the discretion of the officer handling your application.

E Visa Eligibility

Before deciding whether you want to apply for an e visa or not here are the Eligibility criteria

  • You must be a citizen of an approved country with a valid visa to show
  • You must have no intention of seeking employment in Japan
  • You must have no intention of becoming a permanent resident
  • You must have financial sufficiency to foot your expenses
  • You must posses a flight ticket for the return trip to your country or to a third country

Only persons who meet the above conditions may apply for an electronic visa.

Important Things to Bear In Mind

Here are some things to bear in mind before you submit your application and what to expect when you arrive in Japan.

Landing Permit:  Once you arrive at the airport in Japan, the immigration office on duty will request your e-visa and passport for examination. You will also be asked questions regarding your trip, and if you satisfy their curiosity, you will be given a landing Permit to replace the e-visa you have. This action automatically renders the e-visa invalid and the landing permit valid for your stay. The landing permit will be attached to your passport, so always keep your passport with you wherever you go.

Use The Same Passport: The approved e-visa will be linked to the passport you used for the application. You must travel with the same passport, not a different one; otherwise, you will not be allowed into the country.

Not For Work: Note that on no account should you engage in any work or economic activity that will earn you income in the country. E visas are short-term entry documents for leisure, transit, or noncommercial purposes. Working with it is an immigration violation that can lead to sanctions like fines, deportation, or entry bans for a few years.

Extensions:  Extensions are allowed under special conditions but must be activated before the current visa runs out. If you realize you must stay longer than your visa allows, visit the nearest Japanese immigration office to apply for an extension.

Dealing With Japanese Immigration: Despite having a valid e visa the immigration authorities have the legal right to deny a visitor entry if they aren't convinced of their intentions or are found to have obtained the visa under false pretext or done so with fake or invalid documents. Immigration officers are required by law to question visitors at the point of entry to ascertain their true intentions and to also check their travel documents to ensure they are in order.

An Air Travel Document: Electronic visas are only valid for air travelers in Japan. Despite having more than a few seaports along its Pacific coasts, visitors are not allowed to enter the country through any of them.

Note:  The multiple-entry visa is only available to some eligible visitors online. If you cannot apply for the multiple entry e-visa online that is valid for 1-5 years, you may need to visit the nearest embassy or consulate to apply for a consular visa.

The tourist visa for Japan is available to foreign nationals who wish to visit for the holidays. However, there are selected countries whose citizens do not have to comply with the visa requirements as they are on the visa exempt list. These countries include the EU, the US, Argentina, Australia, and others.

If you are from any of these countries on the visa waiver program, you can travel to Japan for tourism with just your passport. However, foreign nationals from other countries not on the list have to apply for a tourist visa.

What Is The Japan Tourist Visa?

The Japanese tourist visa is a travel document issued to foreign nationals by Japanese authorities from non-visa-exempt countries who wish to visit the country for the holidays. This visa is a short-stay visa valid for 90 days or 6 months. The single-entry visa validity is for 90 days and can only be used once, while the double-entry visa is valid for6 months and can be used twice to enter the country.

This visa is solely for tourist purposes and doesn’t allow the holder to engage in any work to earn income during their stay in the country. Furthermore, the government of Japan doesn’t grant visa extensions unless under special circumstances, so visitors are advised to leave the country before or on the day their visa expires so as not to be guilty of immigration violations.

Japan Tourist Visa Application Requirements

Those who wish to apply for a tourist visa must meet the requirements as shown below.

Valid Passport:  A valid passport with a minimum validity of six months is required. The passport should also have at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps.

Colored Photograph:  A colored photograph not older than 3 months is required. The photograph should show the applicant’s face clearly.

Birth Certificate: A copy of their birth certificate.

Proof of Financial Capacity: Documents to prove financial capacity are required. The government wants to ensure that applicants can support themselves during their stay in Japan. A statement of account for 6 months will suffice.

Travel Itinerary: Information about the applicant's travel itinerary. The place they plan to stay and visit, and their arrival and departure date.

Above all, the authorities want to be sure that the person applying for the tourist visa has every plan to return to their home country at the expiration of their visa. Applicants must show that they have strong ties with their home countries before entering Japan.

Is There A Multiple Entry Visa?

The government of Japan has multiple entry visas for tourists who want to visit Japan regularly.

Applicants may apply for a 1-5 years visa depending on their nationality and passport. Multiple entry visas allow the holder to visit as often as they wish, but they cannot stay for more than 30 days per visit.

Japan Tourist Visa Fee

The tourist visa fee varies depending on the validity of the visa and type. Single-entry visas cost less than double or multiple-entry visas. Multiple entry visas are valid for 1 year or more and cost more than 6 months or 30 days visas. Those who wish to visit Japan for medical treatment may also apply for a tourist visa under Japanese law.

How To Apply For A Tourist Visa?

Interested applicants may apply for a tourist visa by visiting the nearest Japanese consulate to submit their application form, but those who don’t live close to an embassy, they can apply for a Japanese E visa online.

Japan E Visa

The Japanese E visa was launched in August 2022 as part of the government’s plans to increase the number of foreign visitors to 60 million annually by 2030. The visa was only open to US and Canadian citizens, but other citizens from eligible countries may now apply. If you are from an E-visa country, you can visit VisaHQ to apply by doing the following.

Log onto VisaHQ and enter Japan as your destination

Choose your country of origin

Select ‘Tourist visa'

Fill out the application form

Scan and attach all necessary documents

Once you submit the form online, it will be processed, and you should receive feedback in the next 5-7 working days. Successful applicants will receive the electronic visa in their email inbox, which they should print out and bring to Japan when they visit.

The immigration officers on duty will examine the visa and other documents, and if they are satisfied, they will stamp their passports and be allowed into the country.

Traveling To Japan

Japan is one of the most industrialized nations on earth with a trillion-dollar economy. Being a top business destination, it is home to some of the biggest conglomerates in the world and nightlife districts. Every year, millions of visitors visit the country for business and pleasure, and you can do the same by applying for a Japan visa.

What Is The Japan Business Visa?

A business visa is a travel document issued by the Japanese government to foreign nationals entering Japan to pursue their economic interests. Business visas are short-term visas valid for 90 days and allow the holder to stay for 30 days. However, multiple entry visas have a longer validity, and the holder can stay for up to 90 days before departure. Anyone visiting for a business-related purpose such as business talks, attending a conference or meeting may apply for this visa to enter Japan.

Remember: a business visa is not the same as a work visa. Business visas are short-term, and the holder is not allowed to work and earn wages directly from an employer during their stay in the country, unlike a work visa.

Do I Need A Japan Business Visa?

You don’t need a Japan visa if you are from a visa-exempt country. To be sure, consult the visa-free list. Also, this visa is only for business-related activities, so if you plan to visit for work, study, tourism, or any other purpose, you need an appropriate visa.

Photograph:  A passport-sized photograph of oneself taken in 4.5cm x 4.5cm dimension. With the applicant’s name written on the back.

Flight Itinerary: A copy of the applicant’s flight itinerary showing the departure and arrival dates, flight reservation number, name, and other vital information.

Business Registration Data:  This information is required for applicants who own a business entity in Japan.

Letter of Invitation:  Those invited by a company or organisation in Japan must provide the invitation letter sent to them stating the purpose of the trip. The letter should be addressed to the Japanese embassy.

Letter of Guarantee:  A letter of guarantee stamped and sealed with the company’s seal.

And with the recent news that Japan now allows you to travel without strictly following an itinerary from a tour group ( you can check out the updated rules here! ), we bet many of you are excited to plan your trip soon ? However, the rules aren't still clear as ever, so we asked these local travel agencies ( Nam Ho Travel , Azza Travel , NTA Travel , SA Tours and JTB Singapore ) to break down the process for you ?

How much do visas cost?

So a little recap, visas are mandatory for all travellers, including Singaporeans. Visas were not required for Singaporeans before the Covid-19 pandemic. Travellers from all countries must apply for a visa through the authorised travel agents.

It goes without saying that visas booked via travel agencies do cost a little more due to service charges. While other tour agencies that responded to us declined to give a rough cost of their visa costs, SA Tours told us that they charge about $120 per person ?

How long should I expect to wait for my visa?

In general visa processing do take at least between 5-14 working days; a general answer provided by all the tour agencies we interviewed. However, it's the visa approval part that's simply a hair-pulling situation ?

For your visa to be approved, you'll need to receive the Entrants, Returnees, Follow-up System (ERFS) code from the travel agency, once you've made the necessary trip planning arrangements like booking flight tickets. Once you've received the code, you can proceed to make an appointment at the Japanese Embassy of Singapore to apply for your visa.

However, due to overwhelming enquires, it could take weeks, even up until months, for your visa to be approved. NTA Travel and JTB Singapore told us that the system is currently booked till 7th November . Simply put, it's highly impossible to travel in October and early November as the visa would not be approved in time. NTA Travel told us that appointments have to be booked almost 5 weeks in advance now ! ?

The general consensus among all of the travel agencies we interviewed is that you'll need a minimum of 2 months to process your visa and get your visa approved. Looks like your Japan trip this year might be postponed to next year instead ?

What are the unguided tours you offer?

japan visa travel agent singapore

While some tour agencies did not share the list of unguided tours, the ones that do are making their tours a lot more private, albeit guided.

For instance, Nam Ho Travel are in the midst of launching their private guided tours. Currently, these are the ones available:

  • 5D4N Kansai Private Tour (Osaka, Kyoto and Nara)
  • 6D5N Tokyo, Mt Fuji and Osaka Semi Tour
  • 6D5N Kyushu Private Tour

Do note, however, that the English speaking tours are currently limited at the moment. They added that they might launch non-guided tour packages, once they are able to clarify the regulations to do so! ?

For Azza Travel however, they have always been providing mostly customised tours as well, which includes a combination of non-guided packages. These are some of their unguided tours on offer:

  • 6D Tokyo + Yamagata Mountain Cabin by Rail (Spring/Autumn/Winter)
  • 7D Honshu Highlights By Rail (Tokyo / Osaka)
  • 6D Osaka + Kyotango By Rail

They've already started selling these unguided packages to Japan, however the group departure will only begin in 2023, so again, travelling to Japan this year may not seem possible at the moment ?

What are the average costs of these tour packages?

Out of all of those who replied, only two (SA Tours and Azza Travel) have gotten back to us on the average costs of their tour packages on offer.

Azza Travel said their popular package (6D Tokyo Yamagata) starts from SGD1480 onwards. They added that most of their customers have also switched to their unguided and semi-guided tours as it's much more cheaper.

However, SA Tours shared the average price of a 6 nights tour (including the estimated cost of a flight) plus a local 4-star hotel (twin/triple sharing) is estimated at $3500 per person. You can however proceed to seek a quotation on the actual cost, however you do have to place a non refundable deposit of $200 per pax. It will be offset in the balance, if you do so though.

These costs have yet to include your personal expenses and travel insurance, and we're expecting it to go up to about SGD4000 per person. Better start saving up soon! ?

How flexible are the unguided tours?

One good news though - it seems that you can actually choose a hotel of your preference! However, this depends on a lot of factors.

Firstly, Azza Travel told us that their rates are based on the hotels that they usually work with, so if the hotel you choose lie on the high end, or is located in somewhere obscure, be prepared to fork out a lot more money for your tour package ?

For Nam Ho Travel, they allow customers to choose their preferred hotel, but they are unable to accept requests of choosing hotel room types. The rooms are given based on availability.

SA Tours allows you the freedom to provide your hotel preferences, where they will send an agent to book it for you, however, it's unclear if this applies to hotel room types.

Do you have any tips for travellers heading to Japan in the future?

SA Tours advise customers to remember that you need to arrange your flight tickets (round trip) and accommodation for the entirety of your stay in Japan via a travel agency! Secondly, they added that you should remain contactable via a phone call, email or an SMS at all times with your travel agent throughout your entire stay.

Azza Travel shared that you should start planning your trip early (more than 3 months!) due to long waiting times for visa processing and application. Many experts predict the rules might stay in place at least till early spring next year, so if you want to see those cherry blossoms, start planning now! ?

You can also consider checking out less-crowded prefectures, as suggested by Azza Travel. Not only is it safer Covid-wise, you wouldn't have to spend as much. Plus you'll be treated to a different side of Japan you've never seen before - which captures the true authenticity you missed ? If you need some ideas on where to go, we give you 5 less-touristy spots to check out in Japan before the crowds kick in .

We hope this gives you a general guideline to help you decide your future trip to Japan ?
