Is the Singapore visa free for Myanmar citizens?

visit visa to singapore from myanmar

Singapore and Myanmar enjoy close ties and relations. As a fellow ASEAN member state, Myanmar citizens can enter Singapore visa-free for social, business, or tourist purposes.

However, there are some conditions and limitations that travelers should be aware of. In this blog post, we’ll take an in-depth look at the Singapore visa requirements for Myanmar citizens.

Table of Contents

Short-term Visa Free Access

Citizens of Myanmar are eligible for visa-free entry into Singapore for up to 30 days. This applies only for social, business, or tourist visits. Those seeking to work, study, or remain in Singapore for over 30 days will need to apply for the appropriate long-term visa.

Some key things to note about the 30 day visa-free entry:

  • You must have a valid Myanmar passport with at least 6 months validity remaining. Passports that are damaged or expired may not be accepted.
  • There is no need to apply for a visa in advance. Your 30 day visa-free entry is issued upon arrival at the immigration checkpoint.
  • Extensions beyond 30 days are generally not possible. You will need to exit Singapore and re-enter if you wish to stay longer.

So in summary, Myanmar citizens can enter Singapore without applying for a tourist visa , as long as you have a valid passport and are staying less than 30 days. This provides a convenient and fast option for short visits to Singapore for tourism or business purposes.

Long-term Visas

If you are looking to stay in Singapore longer than 30 days, or for purposes other than social, business, or tourist visits, you will need to apply for a long-term visa before traveling.

Some common long-term visas that Myanmar citizens pursue include:

  • Student Visa  – For those seeking to study full-time at an educational institution in Singapore. You must get accepted and receive a Student Pass issued by the institution.
  • Work Visa  – For those seeking to work in Singapore. Your Singapore employer must sponsor and apply for your Work Visa before you start working.
  • Permanent Resident  – For those seeking to live long-term or permanently reside in Singapore. You’ll need to meet strict eligibility criteria related to skills, investment, business ownership, etc.
  • Dependant Visa  – For spouses, children, or elderly family members dependent on a Singapore citizen or permanent resident. Your family member sponsors your dependant application.
  • Other Miscellaneous Visas  – Such as for medical treatment, entrepreneurship, investment, etc. Each has specific purposes, criteria, and application processes.

So in summary, while short tourist or social visits are visa-free, those wishing to remain in Singapore long-term or for other purposes do require applying for formal long-term visas before arrival. The eligibility criteria, fees, and application process varies based on your specific visa purpose.

Restrictions and Limitations

While Myanmar citizens enjoy visa-free entry to Singapore, there are some restrictions and limitations to bear in mind:

  • No visa runs  – You cannot continually leave and re-enter Singapore to “reset” the 30 day limit. Singapore immigration officials may deny you entry if they believe you are trying to “live” in Singapore through back-to-back visa runs.
  • No employment  – You cannot engage in any form of employment, paid or unpaid, during your 30 day visa-free stay. Doing so would violate the conditions of your visa exemption.
  • Entry at discretion of officials  – Even with a valid passport, entry is still at the discretion of the immigration officials upon your arrival. They can deny entry if they have reason to suspect you may overstay or violate the visa-free conditions.
  • No visa-free entry for some  – Citizens of Myanmar holding certain types of passports, such as diplomatic or official passports, may not qualify for the 30 day visa waiver.

So in essence, while a visa is not required for short visits, Myanmar citizens cannot indefinitely remain in Singapore or work without a proper long-term visa. The 30 day visa waiver is for tourism and social purposes only.

Application Process for Long-Term Visas

If you do need to apply for a long-term visa for Singapore, what’s the process? Here is a quick overview:

  • Determine visa type  – Figure out which visa (student, work, PR, etc) aligns with your purpose for staying in Singapore.
  • Check requirements  – Each type of long-term visa has eligibility criteria you must meet in terms of documents, finances, qualifications, sponsorships, etc. Review the requirements carefully.
  • Prepare application  – Gather all required documents, forms, photos, application fees, etc needed for the complete visa application package.
  • Submit to embassy  – Submit the visa application at the Singapore embassy or consulate nearest you in Myanmar. Processing times vary from 2 to 10 working days typically.
  • Collect passport  – Once approved and processed, you can collect your passport stamped with the Singapore visa. Check all details are correct.
  • Fly to Singapore  – With your visa secured and passport in hand, you can then book flights and accommodation before traveling to Singapore.

So be sure to allot sufficient preparation time – anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks – to put together a complete and organized visa application. This will help ensure a smooth visa application process.

The requirements, fees, forms, and processing times often change so always refer to the official visa websites for the most updated details when planning to apply for any Singapore long-term visa .

In summary:

  • Myanmar citizens can enter Singapore visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism and social purposes.
  • Long-term visas are required if staying beyond 30 days or for purposes like work, study, PR, etc.
  • There are limitations to the 30 day visa waiver so check you meet all conditions.
  • Apply early for long-term visas by checking requirements and submitting organised applications.

Singapore and Myanmar announce visa exemption for 30-day trips

visit visa to singapore from myanmar

NAYPYITAW - From Dec 1, Singaporeans travelling to Myanmar for short trips will no longer need to apply for a visa.

Myanmar nationals visiting Singapore will also not have to apply for a Singapore visa under a 30-day visa exemption announced on Tuesday (June 7).

The two countries exchanged diplomatic notes on the visa exemption on Tuesday, on the first day of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's official visit to Myanmar.

PM Lee and Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi witnessed the exchange of the diplomatic notes between Singapore's ambassador to Myanmar, Mr Robert Chua, and Myanmar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr Kyaw Tin.

Under the agreement, both countries will grant an exemption of visa to each other's citizens for a stay of not longer than 30 days, and subject to prevailing entry requirements.

The arrangement applies to those holding ordinary passports, and will be implemented by both sides on Dec 1 (2016).

The announcement of the visa exemption is part of a growing relationship between both countries.

Earlier, PM Lee called on President Htin Kyaw at the presidential palace, where he received a ceremonial welcome. He also met Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

The number of Myanmar tourists visiting Singapore has grown steadily in recent years. Annual visitor arrivals from Myanmar to Singapore rose by 12 per cent from 2011 to last year (2015), an increase of 3 per cent every year.

Last year (2015), 105,452 Myanmar tourists visited Singapore. They spent an average of $2,811 per person per trip.

Meanwhile, 45,125 tourists from Singapore visited Myanmar last year (2015), according to the Myanmar Ministry of Hotel and Tourism.

There are also now more weekly flights between Singapore and Myanmar's two largest cities,Yangon and Mandalay. The number of flights a week increased from 44 to 49 from January to May this year (2016).

At the closed door meetings, PM Lee congratulated President Htin Kyaw and Ms Suu Kyi on their successful elections.

He said Singapore continues to support Myanmar's development, including by sharing expertise in relevant fields.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday that officials from Myanmar have been invited to visit Singapore for further discussions on education policy and the development of hawker centres.

PM Lee also updated Ms Suu Kyi on the progress of the Singapore-Myanmar Vocational Training Institute, and the offer of internships in Singapore to its top students.

During the meeting, the leaders underscored the strong ties between both countries and updated each other on the various commemorative events planned this year to mark the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations, including high-level reciprocal visits.

They discussed ways to strengthen economic ties, by updating the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement and working towards starting discussion on a bilateral investment treaty.

They also exchanged views on how tourist flows between both countries could be strengthened through more air links.

Myanmar Entry Requirements for Singaporean Citizens

In 2011, Myanmar (once known as Burma) opened its borders to international foreigners from around the world, including eligible citizens from Singapore . Due to this new opportunity of traveling to Myanmar for tourism, or even for business reasons, the government of Myanmar set up an eVisa to visit Myanmar in order to help facilitate this travel demand.

Over 200,000 foreign arrivals visit Myanmar each year , and 120,000 of those travel for tourism. In that sense, Singaporean nationals are eligible to apply for either a Myanmar tourist eVisa or a Myanmar business e-Visa .

Applicants of Singapore no longer need to book an appointment with a local Burma embassy or consulate to receive their visa to Myanmar.

Myanmar eVisa Types for Singaporean Visitors

The Myanmar e-Visa is divided into two main types; the Burma tourist online visa and the business eVisa to enter Myanmar.

Singapore visitors are asked to consider their reasons for traveling to Myanmar before applying as submitting information for the wrong eVisa type to Myanmar could result in entry denial when entering the country.

Conditions of the Myanmar Tourist eVisa for Singapore

The tourist eVisa to Myanmar allows a Singapore visitor single-entry into the country with a maximum permitted stay of 28 consecutive days over a visa validity period of 90 days from the date of eVisa issuance .

If a Singapore visitor exits Myanmar and wishes to later return to the country , they will need to apply for another tourist eVisa to Myanmar .

Myanmar Business eVisa Conditions as Singaporean

The business online visa to visit Myanmar also allows a Singapore visitor single entry to the country. However, the maximum stay under a Business e-Visa to Burma is 70 consecutive days over a visa validity period of 90 days.

Singaporean business travelers have the possibility to extend the Myanmar business eVisa by obtaining a current recommendation letter from the ministry . Singaporeans should contact their local embassy or consulate for assistance with the procedure.

Myanmar eVisa Requirements for Singaporean Nationals

There are various Myanmar eVisa requirements that have been set in place and that all eligible applicants, including citizens from Singapore, must abide by in order to successfully obtain an e-Visa to Myanmar.

Before applying online and traveling to Burma, Singaporeans are required to check and revise these requirements to ensure that they fully comply with the eVisa regulations for Myanmar:

  • A valid Singaporean passport . A copy or scanned image of the biographical page of the passport must be submitted. It must also have a minimum of 6 months’ validity from the expected arrival date
  • A passport-size photo . There are several Burma eVisa photo specifications that need to be met
  • A working email address in order to receive the visa electronically
  • A valid debit or credit card must be possessed by the Singaporean national so that the eVisa processing fee can be paid for at the final stage of the application

These prerequisites are valid to apply for a Myanmar tourist eVisa from Singapore. Now, if Singaporean travelers are applying for a business online visa to Myanmar, they will also need to add the following:

  • A Burma business letter of invitation from the relevant registered company in Myanmar
  • The registration number of the Burma company
  • A certificate of incorporation (for a local company) or a certificate of registration of Branch office (as a Foreign Investment Company)

Failing to meet these entry eVisa requirements could lead to the denial of a Burma electronic visa.

Once all these documents are in hand and conditions are met, Singaporean passengers can begin to complete the Burma eVisa online application.

Apply for a Myanmar eVisa From Singapore

The Myanmar eVisa online application form is easy, simple to fill out and can be done online, anywhere as long as there is a good internet connection.

During the electronic application process, Singaporeans wishing to obtain a Myanmar eVisa will need to provide personal information and passport details such as full name, contact data, and issuance and expiry date of the travel document.

Singaporean applicants will also find throughout the application that there may be some health and safety questions that will also need to be answered accurately in order to successfully obtain an eVisa to Burma.

Other health factors, such as vaccinations before visiting Myanmar , should also be taken into consideration. Singaporean visitors may need to book an appointment with their local doctor weeks in advance to avoid any health issues whilst in the country.

Important : Applicants of Singapore should also be informed about the conditions when traveling to Myanmar with children so they do not encounter any issues when entering Burma.

The final step to complete the application form will be paying the Burma eVisa processing fee with a credit or debit card. When this is done, applicants from Singapore will receive a confirmation message on their screens and then, in only a couple of days or even hours, they should receive the eVisa to Burma via email in PDF format.

Follow our news, recent searches, commentary: visa-free policies alone will not revive china’s inbound tourism, advertisement.

To revitalise inbound tourism, China must enhance travel convenience for foreign visitors, says an Edith Cowan University academic.

JOONDALUP, Australia: China’s tourism industry has faced significant challenges since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, China welcomed 97.7 million foreign visitors. But in 2023, this plummeted to 35.5 million, representing less than 40 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

The sluggish recovery of China’s inbound tourism has prompted widespread concern across government, industry, academia and the media. Leading tourism research journals in China have published dedicated articles discussing the factors influencing China’s inbound tourism recovery.

To address this trend, the Chinese government has implemented several policy measures. In July 2023, China reinstated its 15-day visa-free travel policy for visitors from Singapore and Brunei.

In November 2023, this policy was extended to ordinary passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia.

On Mar 7, China expanded its 15-day visa-free policy to include six additional European countries - Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg.

IMPORTANCE OF INBOUND TOURISM FOR CHINA

Inbound tourism holds significant importance for China, particularly amid slowing economic growth. Tourism was prioritised during the early stages of China’s reform and opening up era, valued for its potential to generate much-needed foreign exchange.

But as China amassed substantial foreign exchange reserves through rapid development and entry into the World Trade Organization, the reliance on inbound tourism for foreign exchange earnings diminished over time.

Amid the challenges confronting China’s economy in 2024, inbound tourism has emerged as an avenue for bolstering economic growth. Drawing international tourists to spend in China translates to a net export of services, injecting added value into the nation’s economic ecosystem.

Compared to ordinary goods exports, inbound tourism holds the potential for greater benefits due to its multiplier effect. When international tourists spend money, their consumption creates a chain reaction, stimulating job creation and further expenditure.

Visa-free policies are a practical tool for facilitating tourist flows and trade exchanges between nations. China’s current visa-free policies are anticipated to incentivise more business and leisure travellers to visit China. Still, further efforts are necessary to rejuvenate China’s inbound tourism sector.

Eliminating barriers for foreign tourists in china.

Enhancing travel convenience is imperative to address the needs of foreign tourists. While China has made significant strides in developing advanced technologies and transportation infrastructure for domestic travel, foreign visitors often encounter obstacles while navigating in the country.

For instance, booking high-speed train tickets or entry tickets to popular tourist attractions necessitates the use of WeChat’s embedded program. Many establishments exclusively accept WeChat Pay or AliPay, leaving foreign tourists in a predicament if they rely solely on cash or credit cards. Many hotels in China are also not allowed to accommodate foreign tourists.

Eliminating barriers for foreign tourists to travel in China presents enhanced business opportunities for Chinese tourism-related enterprises. While Chinese consumers remain the primary market for most of these businesses, delivering seamless services to foreign clientele could further strengthen their competitive edge.

A case in point is the Chinese online travel company Ctrip - which initially emulated Travelocity’s business model but has since expanded its operations globally - establishing itself as a prominent international online travel business.

Technological advancements have the potential to mitigate technical barriers to foreigners’ travel in China without incurring substantial costs.

Yet, addressing structural and entrenched ideological barriers may be more challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic may have prompted the Chinese government and tourism operators in China to adopt a more inward-looking approach, prioritising the needs of their citizens.

The shifting geopolitical landscape globally also plays a role in the challenges facing China’s inbound tourism. According to a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Centre, most individuals in Western nations hold unfavourable views towards China. The Chinese government’s tightening grip on societal regulations could potentially cause discomfort for foreign travellers in China.

This increased control may lead to unnecessary disruptions in international events like academic conferences and exchanges, due to the formalities and documentation mandated by the government.

Look beyond national borders.

The time has come to look beyond national borders when contemplating tourism. The world has reopened, albeit with a transformed landscape compared to before the COVID-19-pandemic.

The Chinese government’s implementation of visa-free policies should be applauded - but to meaningfully revitalise its inbound tourism, concerted efforts are required to enhance convenience for foreign visitors before, during and after their travels to China.

To attract more foreign visitors, Chinese businesses must meet the needs of both domestic and international tourists. While transitioning to a cashless society is desirable, it should not exacerbate the digital divide among Chinese citizens or alienate international visitors.

It is imperative to implement more user-friendly alternative payment methods that cater to the preferences of foreign travellers, such as accepting major credit cards or other preferred payment options.

The process of passing through transport entry or exit points using passport scanning should be as seamless as tapping a Chinese identification card. Leveraging advancements in AI technology and multiple language mobile apps should also be developed to facilitate international tourists’ travel bookings in China.

China has demonstrated innovation across various technological fronts. This ingenuity should be harnessed to address the needs of international tourists, ultimately reversing the current decline in inbound tourism and bolstering the country’s tourism sector.

Sam Huang is Professor of Tourism and Services Marketing and Head of the Centre for Tourism Research in the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University, Australia. This commentary first appeared on East Asia Forum.
