This Irish Castle Is One of the Best Hotels in the World, According to T+L Readers

The stunning estate is basically the size of NYC's Central Park.

Step into Adare Manor in southern Ireland and you'll feel as if you've entered a fairytale. Built in the 1800s, the former home of the Earl of Dunraven is now a luxury hotel and golf resort. It has become a crown jewel of Ireland's hospitality — the regal retreat seamlessly blends its rich history with modern amenities.

Adare Manor

  • The 19th-century building has a grand ballroom, a movie theater, a state-of-the-art spa, and several quirky accents, including 365 stained-glass windows and 52 chimneys.
  • Guests can enjoy activities like afternoon tea at The Gallery and a falconry demonstration with Adare's cast of falcons.
  • Adare Manor's fine-dining restaurant, The Oak Room, is the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Limerick.
  • Guests can also partake in a private whiskey tasting led by the resort's whiskey ambassador.

Last spring, I journeyed to Ireland's County Limerick — about a two-hour drive from Dublin — to see for myself what makes this hotel one of the best in the world. (Adare Manor just made the T+L 500 list , which details the best 500 hotels in the world, according to Travel + Leisure readers.)

As I drove up to Adare Manor, I was instantly blown away by the sheer magnitude of the building. The neo-Gothic architecture is striking, with dove-gray limestone stretching as far as the eye can see and gargoyles on the roof peering over the grounds. There are quirky accents all around the façade of the building, including 365 stained-glass windows and 52 chimneys.

Vanessa Wilkins/Travel + Leisure

Inside the estate, the bold architecture is balanced out by warm and inviting lounge décor. Major restorations transformed the manor into a contemporary luxury haven while still honoring its 19th-century history through unique furnishings and original artwork.

Plush sofas, custom tapestries, and marble white bathrooms elevate each of the 104 individually designed guest rooms. And, if you’re as lucky as I was, your room will have a view of the gorgeous formal French gardens outside the window.

Additional highlights from the property’s restoration include a grand ballroom, a movie theater, and a state-of-the-art spa. There's also an infinity pool, steam room, and sauna on-site.

The on-site activities are plentiful, but not overwhelmingly so. One moment I was living out my Bridgerton fantasies during an elegant afternoon tea at The Gallery, where I sipped on Champagne and a signature tea blend. The next, I was off to a falconry demonstration, where I met Adare’s falcons, eagles, and the most adorable Scops owl — appropriately named “Tiny.”

Our instructor raised the stakes, suiting me up in a brown leather gauntlet for a free-fly experience. At her signal, a Harris hawk soared over from a nearby tree, landing on my arm with a dramatic span of its wings. All of this happened within my first three hours at Adare. “Where am I?” I thought to myself incredulously.

Even walking the grounds of the property is an adventure. After all, the massive estate spans 842 acres. (To put things in perspective, that's just an acre shy of the size of New York City's Central Park.) Guests can also traverse the property on bikes provided by Adare or arrange for a horse-and-carriage tour.

Adare Manor's staff was just as special as the hotel. Every member shared a genuine love for their craft and the property — it was both palpable and infectious.

There’s Gerry O’Halloran, the energetic manager of The Padel Club , who encouraged me to try a padel lesson. (Padel is a racket sport that is a mix between tennis and squash.) His enthusiasm for the sport motivated me to try my hand at something I’d never done before. And even though I gave myself a two out of 10 on performance, I still had fun trying to play.

Willie Forde, the manager of Adare Country Pursuits , showed off an award-worthy gundog demonstration with his adorable Irish labradors, Midnight and Shadow. And finally, there was Brendan O’Connor, Adare’s general manager, who explained that the staff’s expertise and passion are the winning combination that set Adare Manor apart from the rest. “Our goal is to be the best at what we do,” he told me.

The fine-dining restaurant, The Oak Room , is the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Limerick . For my meal, chef Mike Tweedie created an exquisite seasonal menu that highlighted Irish ingredients like hand-dived scallops, beef and oxtail sourced from Dublin-based Higgins Family Butchers , and wine pairings to accompany every course.

A short walk from the manor is the more casual Carriage House . And for drinks, there is no better place to be than The Tack Room . Tucked away on the basement level of the resort behind an unassuming wooden door, it is Adare’s own speakeasy-style bar. Guests and local visitors can imbibe on wine, bespoke cocktails, or a pour from their expansive whiskey library. Some bottles are so rare they are kept under lock and key.

Here, I enjoyed a private whiskey tasting led by Tommie Doyle, the resort’s whiskey ambassador. (Yes, that is his actual title.) Doyle fervently walked me through the history of the “water of life.” He seamlessly wove personal anecdotes and historical facts into his presentation and ended the session with a tasting of four of the finest Irish whiskeys from The Tack Room’s collection.

“There is no wrong way to enjoy whiskey,” Doyle advised, waving away all the fussiness that comes with some tastings. “Just enjoy it however you like, however it feels right, and that is right.”

Nightly rates start at $830. To learn more about Adare Manor or to book your stay, head over to adaremanor.com .

Adare Manor: A Neo-Gothic Masterpiece in the Heart of Ireland

This historic hotel is set within an idyllic 842-acre estate in County Limerick.

Adare Manor

We’re standing in the Great Hall at Adare Manor , gazing up at the soaring vaulted ceilings and tapestry-lined walls. Red silk drapes threaded with gold leaf frame the windows; a grand staircase leads up to the oak-paneled gallery above.

“It’s not a castle,” insists the hotel’s concierge, David Gale, with a playful grin. “Castles are places of blood, murder, and mayhem… This. Is. Not. A. Castle.”

Beside us lies a polished marble chimneypiece embellished with a harp – the heraldic symbol of Ireland – on a bed of shamrock. Antique Chinese lamps glow softly from each corner. Beneath our feet, hand-knotted woolen rugs sit atop original parquet flooring dating back to the 1830s.

Once used to host extravagant parties for the 2 nd Earl of Dunraven and his Countess Lady Caroline, the breathtaking space now serves as the reception for Adare Manor.

Gale, of course, is right – while the neo-gothic masterpiece could be mistaken for a castle at first glance, it is in fact a meticulously preserved calendar house built with 365 stained-glass windows (corresponding to the days of the year), 52 chimney stacks (representing the weeks) and four wings (one for each season).

Almost a decade ago, Irish billionaire J.P. McManus and his wife Noreen purchased the estate and began an extensive restoration project breathing new life into every space at Adare Manor. Over 7,000 tonnes of locally quarried limestone were brought in to craft a gleaming new wing that blends in almost seamlessly with the existing manor house.

From the moment you enter the gates at Adare Manor and approach the hotel from the long, winding drive, it’s clear every effort has been made to respect the building’s storied history. Set within a rolling 842-acre estate on the banks of the River Maguire in County Limerick, this is the place to experience the enchanting Emerald Isle .

After a journey where almost everything that could possibly have gone wrong did – closed roads, lost luggage, and a missed flight were among the calamities – we arrived weary and disheveled. But within seconds of stepping into the Great Hall, a sense of calm ensued.

And, by the time we had been ushered into our suite and paused for a moment to look out at the velvet-green gardens below, memories of the journey had already started to fade. Adare Manor, it seems, was the perfect antidote.

Stateroom at Adare Manor

The sprawling manor house comprises 104 rooms, each of which is entirely unique. We were lucky enough to stay in one of the Staterooms overlooking the hotel’s manicured gardens and golf course.

Decorated in shades of pale green and cream, our room balanced comfort with luxury in equal measures; thoughtful touches could be found at every turn, from the historic tapestry wall hanging behind the king-size bed, to the antique chessboard and mahogany furnishings. The marble bathroom complete with a rainfall shower and freestanding tub also deserves a mention.

If you’re looking for something exceptional, consider booking the Lady Caroline Suite. Once the chamber of the lady of the manor, the lavish abode features a wooden beamed ceiling, oak paneled walls and a marble fireplace adorned with the family crest – oh and you’ll be treated to a dedicated Manor Butler, too.

The Oak Room

When it comes to food at Adare Manor, the real draw is, of course, the hotel’s Michelin-starred eatery, The Oak Room. Once the original family dining room, the restaurant itself is seriously exclusive – think oak-paneled walls, glittering chandeliers, and original oil paintings from the 19 th century.

Talented head chef Michael Tweedie has crafted a seven-course tasting menu that changes with the seasons, thoughtfully built around Ireland’s bounty of incredible produce. Among the highlights – of which there were many – the monkfish, perfectly complemented with an indulgent oyster, champagne, and parsley velouté stood out, as did the succulent Higgins beef served with green asparagus, morel mushrooms, and a separate bowl of braised ox tail drizzled with a wild garlic emulsion.

Jaffa cake dessert

The star of the show, however, was dessert – Tweedie’s inventive take on a jaffa cake (the classic British biscuit). Silky-smooth orange ganache encased in dark chocolate, served with a refreshing orange sorbet and dusted with more chocolate and tiny shavings of gold leaf made for a memorable end to the meal.

Each course was served with impeccable wine pairings selected by Adare Manor’s knowledgeable (and charming) sommelier, Jonathan Jonsson (previously of Copenhagen’s two-star immersive eatery, Alchemist ).

After dinner, be sure to head downstairs to the hotel’s cozy cellar bar – The Tack Room – for a nightcap or two. Here, you’ll find over 100 rare bottles of the finest whiskies (this is Ireland, after all) and a lengthy cocktail list.

The Gallery at Adare Manor

Breakfast is served in The Gallery – a magnificent room stretching over 130 feet, inspired by the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. With its oak-beamed ceiling and colorful stained-glass windows, it’s easy to imagine the Dunravens hosting elaborate hunt balls and dinner parties here.

For a more casual dining affair head over to the newly renovated Carriage House (once the manor’s stables), while the ornately gilded Drawing Room serves as a wonderful setting to enjoy a chilled glass of champagne .

The pool at the Padel Club

Downstairs from the Great Hall you’ll find Adare Manor’s tranquil spa . The hot stone massage was sublime; heated basalt stones and calming aromatherapy oils helped to relieve any lingering tension and left me feeling completely rested. Afterward, I was taken to the relaxation room to regroup with a raspberry tea. There’s also a private pool reserved for spa guests complete with a sauna and steam room.

And, if it’s high-performance skincare you’re after, there are plenty of options. Expert therapists are on-hand to carry out a range of medically inspired treatments with 111SKIN products from black-diamond body sculpting to rose quartz restorative facials.

More recently in 2020, Adare Manor unveiled its brand new Padel Club – a sporting and wellness center a short walk across the park from the main building, that features two custom-built padel clubs, a 55 ft swimming pool, yoga studio and gym. Most exciting for golf lovers is the sports simulation room where you can take virtual lessons to perfect your game.

Adare Manor exterior

Given the stunning surroundings, it’s little wonder Adare Manor is taking steps to minimize its impact on the environment. Since the redevelopment, over 17,000 trees have been planted throughout the grounds (including 1,000 this year alone) and the hotel is about to introduce 16,000 feet of wildflowers.

The estate is home to eight beehives producing raw honey for the restaurant and the immaculate grounds are tended by electric robots that cut the grass (we spotted a few during our stay).

There are also several electric charging points for guests (so you can bring your Tesla) and diesel golf buggies have been phased out entirely and replaced with hybrid vehicles. Perhaps the biggest commitment to sustainability is the on-site solar farm which is currently being extended on the lower part of the estate; once complete this should provide up to 60% of Adare Manor’s electricity.

bathroom at Adare Manor

It would be easy never to step foot outside the grounds of Adare Manor during your stay – everything you need is at your fingertips. The 18-hole golf course , for starters, is without a doubt one of the best in Ireland. Originally designed by legendary golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior in the 90s, the course was given a refresh by Tom Fazio during the renovations and is set to host the Ryder Cup in 2027 – a dream of J.P. McManus.

If golf isn’t your thing there’s an array of activities to keep the entire family entertained, from clay pigeon shooting and horse-drawn carriage rides to fishing and falconry (we glimpsed a bald eagle and snowy owl during our stay).

It’s also well worth taking a stroll in the picturesque village of Adare where you’ll find an assortment of galleries, antique shops and traditional Irish pubs. And, if you want to explore further afield, Galway and Cork are less than a two-hour drive away.

Invite to Augusta National Still Pending? Adare Manor Is the Next Best Thing.

How a billionaire transformed a centuries-old estate into the "Augusta of Ireland."

Adare Manor isn't a country club. Nor is it strictly speaking just a golf resort. More accurately, it's an aristocratic pile-turned-hotel in County Limerick, Ireland, with nearly 200 years of history and more than 800 acres of land that has a golf course so fantastic it has earned a reputation as the "Augusta National of Ireland." Even if you're not a golfer, you'll know this is really high praise.

a person swinging a golf club

McManus was playing the long game when he bought Adare for €30 million back in 2015 and then spent a whole lot more to restore, renovate, and modernize the property. The preservation of the manor's 19th-century bones was naturally a priority. Adare's distinctive style was the vision of the eccentric 2nd Earl of Dunraven, who, in 1832, decided to replace his Georgian mansion with a Neo-Gothic manor , complete with gargoyles, parapets, stained glass windows, biblical scenes hand-carved into the walls, and soaring arches reminiscent of a medieval cathedral. (Fun fact: Adare is a rare example of a calendar house—an architectural style developed during the Elizabethan era—which means it has 365 windows, 52 chimneys, seven stone pillars, and four towers.)

"With the supervision of a Grade I conservation architect, we had a commitment to honor the past and preserve as much of the original character as possible," general manager Brendan O'Connor says of the project, which took 18 months and included, among other things, the addition of a new wing, new rooms and suites, a better spa, and a restaurant, the Oak Room, that earned a Michelin star in 2020.

Golf, too, was obviously high on the list of priorities for McManus, who harbored ambitions to turn County Limerick into a world-class golf destination. Adare, which became a hotel in the '80s when the Dunravens moved out, already had a good golf course. But McManus coveted a championship course, so he turned to architect Tom Fazio, whose most famous gig is at—where else?—Augusta National, where he has been primping and polishing those legendary azalea-framed greens since 1998. The investment paid off: In 2019, Adare Manor was selected to be the host of the 2027 Ryder Cup (for the uninitiated, this is basically the Olympics of golf).

a golf course with trees

And unlike at Augusta, the WAGs will have plenty to do at Adare. According to O'Connor, only about 15% of hotel guests opt to play a round during their stay. (Include Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas in this group: the couple, both avid golfers, were here last summer.) "There are so many reasons why people visit Adare," O'Connor says. "Golf is just one of them." As for the other ways to bide your time, the list is extensive. Falconry, horseback riding, game shooting, state-of-the-art Padel courts (and an instructor who will really kick your ass), fishing, archery, you get the idea.

a living room with a chandelier and couches

There is also the very enticing option to simply soak in the blue-blooded luxuriousness of it all and do your best Lady Mary Crawley. Because it really won't take long to settle into the rhythms of aristocratic country life, and feel perfectly at home. Adare, which once hosted the Duke of York (before he became King George V), has a way of doing that—it impresses you with its grandeur, then swaddles you in sumptuous, and yet totally unpretentious, intimacy. Here, everyone is a countess. Though the real one, the Dowager Countess of Dunraven, whose former bedroom is now among the hotel's prettiest suites, still lives nearby and often drops in for tea in the Gallery. Does it get any more Downton Abbey than that?

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

Adare Manor

Presiding over hundreds of Irish countryside acres, the secluded Adare Manor exudes both Old World extravagance and fun. Built in 1832 on the crest of the Gothic Revival, its chateau styling with gargoyles, four towers, 52 chimneys and 365 leaded windows sits in rural splendor.

Studded with Augustus Pugin-designed (the architect behind the new Palace of Westminster) fireplaces, the former ancestral home of the Earls of Dunraven carries a regal air, but it’s a friendly destination, welcoming locals and guests alike. Walls whisper céad míle fáilte — a Gaelic greeting meaning “a hundred thousand welcomes” — while the manor experience elevates body and soul to banish the knotted stresses that come along with 21st-century life.

Four restaurants and a spa are hospitable touches, but the highlights here are the outdoor adventures. From fishing to falconry, the sporting options are fit for Irish nobility. And much like the manor itself, the Tom Fazio-designed golf course combines the modern and historical in the most luxurious way.

  • Adare Manor makes for an impressive tableau against the surrounding countryside, but the interior is just as jaw-dropping. The Gothic-style mansion’s vaulted roof adds extra height to rooms that are filled with light from leaded windows.
  • Its history is foremost throughout, from the falconry and gundog experiences offered by local outdoorsman Willie Forde to wood carvings inspired by the bestiary, a medieval book of mythical creatures. Naturally, ravens are prominently featured — a nod to the mansion’s original owners, the Dunravens.
  • Embrace Irish pub culture from the estate’s three unique lounges. From the cozy-chic environs of The Tack Room to the elegant Drawing Room to the clubby velvet bar in The Carriage House, you’ll find no shortage of places to whet your whistle.
  • The restaurants give off their own distinct vibes: the impressive 132-foot-long Gallery where afternoon tea is served, The Carriage House's art deco dining room and The Oak Room’s plush fine-dining ambiance.
  • The Spa at Adare Manor is a light-filed oasis centered around a 26-foot pool and relaxation area beneath a vaulted skylight. Inspired by the folklore of Ireland’s forests, treatments range from the Inner Strength chakra therapy to Codladh Samh, a ritual designed to induce deep sleep.
  • Just beyond the 842-acre estate is the delightful heritage village of Adare, known for its boutiques, sporting prowess and oak woods.
  • Before heading out on your hunting, fishing or falconry adventure, stop by the Boot Room to gear up like an Irish noble. Dubarry boots and waxed jackets are available to borrow.
  • Adare’s signature scent drifts throughout the tapestried chambers. If the aroma tickles your nose in such a way, bespoke crested candles can be purchased in the gift shop.
  • Thirty minutes from the hotel, Shannon Airport provides direct flights from the U.S., Europe and the U.K.
  • The 103-room County Limerick hotel has six categories ranging in size from 463 to more than 1,000 square feet. All offer sumptuous 19th-century style, marble bathrooms and gorgeous views of the Irish countryside.
  • Step back in time with a stay in one of the Dunraven Staterooms. These accommodations once served as the private apartments of the earl and his family — the fireplace mantel still bears his crest that says, “ Quae sursum volo videre, ” or “I wish to see what is beyond.”
  • Views of the verdant estate frame every bedroom, while generous marble bathrooms and vintage-style dressing areas add intrigue to the interiors. Much is derived from original furnishings.
  • Concealed technology makes for contemporary ease: televisions within bathroom mirrors, bedside tablets and USB ports built into brushed bronze plaques.
  • Adare Manor is invitingly tactile, from carved staircases and mantels to tasseled drapes. Bouquets from H&W Blooms complement the décor.
  • The craftsmanship of everything from the fashioning of stone walls to leaded windows and marble furniture is stunning.
  • Enjoy the Irish art — a piece by painter Richard Hearns, a 13-foot bronze bear by sculptor Patrick O'Reilly, original prints and cartoons that illustrate Ireland’s history all adorn the luxury hotel.
  • Drift through the Manor’s Great Hall and Gallery, with 17th-century Flemish choir stalls, to arrive at the new West Wing decked out in similar limestone. The marbled white and gold-leaf grandeur of this space opens only for private occasions.
  • Less than half a mile from the manor, David Collins Studio-designed The Carriage House is a chic place for relaxing and dining. A working replica of an 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen (regarded as the world’s first automobile) in the lobby provides a jolly icebreaker.

Review: Adare Manor

Adare Manor, Ireland

Reviewed by Sarah Allard

Why book Adare Manor?

For a countryside escape that effortlessly combines faultless service, magnificent scenery and top-tier dining with a huge dose of Irish charm.

Set the scene

To say that Adare Manor has been on my list for a while is something of an understatement. Over the years, photos of those dreamy, grand interiors have peppered my Instagram feed, and given its undeniable popularity with Conde Nast Traveller readers (it was voted  the best resort in the world in our 2022 Readers' Choice Awards) it became a personal mission to experience Adare for myself. Even the arrival at tiny Shannon Airport is a joy – in just 10 minutes we’re off the plane, through arrivals and into the backseat of the taxi, the eager cabbie pointing out that every single person he has picked up from Adare has been full of stories of memorable, spoiling stays (“one person cried when they had to leave!”). Expectations are high, but as we make our way along a sweeping driveway surrounded by a perfectly manicured 842-acre estate and the neo-Gothic 19th century castle comes into view, they’re shaping up to be well-placed.

The backstory

This is a hotel steeped in history. From the moment you step inside the palatial lobby (the towering fireplaces! The stained-glass windows! The gold leaf ceilings!) there are not-so-subtle nods to the hotel’s impressive past, but it’s the staff that truly bring Adare’s history to life – each well-versed and keen to share stories and fascinating tidbits any chance they get.

Built as a stately home for the 2nd Earl of Dunraven in the mid-1800s, the property is an example of a rare calendar house, with 365 windows in the main building, 52 ornate chimneys, seven stone pillars and four towers marking the days, weeks and seasons in a year. It remained in the family until the 1980s, when it was sold and transformed into a hotel. In 2017, after a multi-million pound restoration project, a refreshed Adare was unveiled, with a new 42-bedroom wing, ballroom and spa. Every possible step was taken and euro spent to ensure the restoration was faultless – and it shows. From the original oak floors to the stained glass windows, leading artisans in every field imaginable were flown in to carefully bring Adare into the 21st century while lovingly preserving and celebrating its past. Modernising a setting like this isn’t easy, but what they’ve created here is a hotel that feels traditional and stately yet modern and fresh, with dark wood beams, elaborate pink marble fireplaces and numerous family portraits sat alongside tasteful soft furnishings – all greens, pastels and greys – and custom silk wallpapers.

It’s elegant and comfortable without a hint of stuffiness, and as we sink into one of the squashy sofas in the lobby – wafts of the hotel’s signature fragrance mingling with firewood in the air – and watch as day trippers pop in to marvel at the grand surrounds in one corner while the hotel staff greet guests like long-lost friends in another, we’re struck by something you don’t get from photos: how homely and welcoming this place is.

So luxurious you could easily spend the duration of your stay here without needing to leave. There are 104 rooms – 62 in the Manor House and River Wing, and an extra 42 in the brand new West Wing. Although obviously varying in size, each offers the same level of grandeur – with sky-high ceilings, plush interiors, king-sized beds and marble en suite bathrooms complete with freestanding tub, rainfall shower, Acqua di Parma toiletries and super soft bathrobes. If you happen to find time, then a soak overlooking Adare’s acres is a very lovely way to spend an hour.

The plushest of the rooms can be found in the original Manor House; the 12 Dunraven Staterooms come with desk and sitting areas and original fireplaces, with views of the manicured rose gardens and golf course beyond. At 100 square feet our Signature Suite is palatial – heavy drapery, carved wood panelling, 19th century paintings, stucco ceilings and plump sofas across a lobby, sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. And if all of that doesn’t make you feel like royalty, then having a Manor Butler on speed dial will help.

Oh, the spa . There’s actually two – the original spa on the ground floor of the Manor House is a tranquil spot with five treatment rooms, a post-treatment relaxation room – where you can kick back, enjoy fresh juice and hold onto that spa magic just a little longer – an eight-metre pool overlooking the river beyond (the doors open out onto it in summer) and a sauna. Skincare brand 111Skin took over the treatments in 2021, and the Rose Gold Renaissance treatment is exclusive to the hotel. It’s 150 minutes of what can only be described as pure heaven, including full body polish and exfoliation, a Rose Quartz Crystal massage, and ending with a gold sheet treatment mask. My skin has never felt so hydrated, and probably never will again.

Then there’s the pretty spectacular Padel Club – just five minutes from the main house and surrounded by woodland, it features a 17-metre infinity pool positioned to feel like you’re swimming amongst the treetops.

The food and drink

Food is a huge focus at Adare, and The Oak Room is their Michelin-starred crowning glory. Headed up by Devon-born Mike Tweedie, the menu is classic and makes the most of what’s local and seasonal. Our seven-course signature menu ran from delicate beetroot tartlets topped with caviar to a seriously decadent hazelnut and chocolate souffle tart with salted raw milk. My partner was horrified when I asked for cheese at the end, but I implore you to dig deep and find space – having Irish cheeses, caramelised walnuts and chutney popped on your plate from the trolley is an utter delight.

The Carriage House is the more casual restaurant option, based in the new part of the hotel serving steak, pizza and fish and chips in a relaxed setting.

The Tack Room was a real highlight – a basement drinking den stocked with over 100 different whiskies and a solid cocktail list. If head sommelier Jonathan Jønsson is around, be sure to ask for his recommendations (just don’t make any plans to get up too early the next morning).

The 40-metre-long Gallery, apparently the second-longest room in the country, provides the breakfast setting, where you can tuck into anything from freshly-baked pastries and homemade cereals to a full Irish breakfast (a must if you had one too many whiskeys in the Tack Room the night before) surrounded by stained-glass windows, heavy tapestries and intricate oak-wood carvings.

The neighbourhood

When you arrive at a hotel as spoiling as this for the weekend it can be all too easy to stay put, but I would highly recommend venturing out to experience the charming village of Adare bordering the grounds. The locals are extremely proud of the attention the hotel has brought, and residents seem genuinely pleased to see visitors strolling the quaint high street, snapping pics of the thatched cottages and stopping for a cup of tea at one of the local cafes. We walked into one of the pubs that sits on the high street for a Guinness (when in Rome) to find a mix of locals and tourists sat supping pints, a fire crackling in the corner and rugby on the telly.

The service

Quite simply exceptional, and without doubt the highlight of our stay. The team here are the heart and soul of the hotel, with a manner that always feels genuine.

For families

It’s practically impossible to be bored at Adare. Golf is a big focus – Adare has Ireland ’s most impressive course and will play host to the Ryder Cup in 2027 – but even if golfing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to fill your time from the pool and padel courts to virtual games sessions in the sports simulation room.

Outdoorsy folk are spoilt for choice; take your pick from falconry, fishing and archery. Our horse drawn carriage tour was not only a relaxing way to see the grounds, but a great way to learn everything there is to know about Adare. We sat with blankets over our knees as Sarah – a local horse handler who runs the tours – reeled off fact after fact about Adare, as a very lovely boy named Barney gently trundled along in the afternoon sunshine.

The thought and hard work behind Adare’s sustainability initiatives goes far beyond removing plastic straws from the mini bar. The team – overseen by Thomas Breen – seem genuinely committed to ensuring the hotel is as green as possible, all starting with comprehensive training for each new team member. Half of the hotel’s fleet of cars and vehicles are electric (they are aiming for 100 per cent by 2024), they source as much as they can locally and even encourage suppliers to be greener with their delivery methods – refusing to work with those who use excess packaging. In-room amenities are fully recyclable, and the hotel is actively involved in community projects such as cleaning and maintaining the local village, park and pathways.

Accessibility for those with mobile impairments

A few of the ground-floor rooms have been adapted for guests who use a wheelchair, with interconnecting rooms available for those travelling with a companion or carer. There are also specially selected bikes available for children that may need additional support, and bed lifts and hoists can be arranged prior to arrival.

Anything left to mention?

It’s easy to see why people go back to Adare time and time again – you leave with the feeling that you’ve been well looked after, rested, restored and ready to face the world.

Tiger Woods and the Fred Couples’ caddie on the green on the 9th hole during a Masters practice round

Tiger Woods confirms he is in frame to captain US at next two Ryder Cups

  • Talks with PGA of America chief to be held after Masters
  • Woods could lead country at Bethpage and Adare Manor

The likelihood of Tiger Woods captaining the US in the next two Ryder Cups has increased after the 48‑year‑old confirmed talks over the role will conclude after the Masters.

It has always been assumed Woods will lead his country at Adare Manor in County Limerick in 2027. However, the PGA of America has also given the 15-times major winner the opportunity to take the captaincy at Bethpage next year. Woods had shut down discussion of the Ryder Cup until Tuesday at Augusta National, where he gave the clearest indication yet that he will soon be announced as the US captain.

“We’re still talking about it,” Woods said. He was pressed on whether his decision would be linked to how much competitive golf he is able to play. “It’s something that Seth [Waugh, the PGA of America’s chief executive] and I are going to sit back and talk about after this event. I said I’m going to be busy for a couple weeks, so let me focus on getting through this week and hopefully getting another jacket, and then we can sit back and talk about it next week.”

Woods as captain would considerably raise the profile of the Ryder Cup, with the US seeking to win back the trophy on the outskirts of New York. Had he not signed for the LIV tour, Phil Mickelson would have been an automatic choice for the post. Instead, signals point towards Woods taking charge of back‑to‑back teams. His connection to Adare is through a close friendship with the Irish resort’s owner, JP McManus. Woods’s status in the game has always been such that he can determine his own Ryder Cup situation.

Of more immediate concern to Woods is the potential claiming of a sixth Masters title. Woods has not played tournament golf since withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational in February due to illness . “If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” Woods said of his prospects at Augusta. Woods’s competitive mindset was further emphasised by the brisk dismissal of any notion he would look to become an honorary starter here in the future.

Still, there are understandable concerns about Woods’s longevity. At the Hero World Challenge in November, he floated the idea of playing once a month in 2024. After his exit at the Genesis, Woods surprisingly failed to appear at the Players Championship in March . “I wasn’t ready to play,” he said.

“My body wasn’t ready. My game wasn’t ready. I thought that when I was at Hero, once a month would be a really nice rhythm. It hasn’t worked out that way but now we have major championships every month from here through July. So now the once a month hopefully kicks in.”

This represents good news for the organisers of the US PGA Championship, US Open and Open Championship. “I hurt every day,” said Woods, who had multiple surgeries even before a car accident which caused severe leg damage in 2021.

Woods, who last won the Masters in 2019, would create history by making the cut at Augusta for what would be a record 24th consecutive time. “I will say this: I think the last thing he’s thinking about is making the cut,” said Fred Couples, who played alongside Woods on the back nine on Tuesday. “I don’t know how the weather is supposed to be. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be perfect or not, but I don’t think it matters to him. He can play well in winds and rain and all that.

after newsletter promotion

“Can he win here? You know what, yeah. I just watched him play nine holes, and nine holes is only nine holes on a Tuesday, but he never mishits a shot. But the idea of making a cut, I think he would laugh at that. That’s a huge record, but he’s here to win. He’s here to play really, really hard. His ankle is bad. We know it. But he’s going to walk 72 holes and if he keeps playing like that, he’ll be a factor.”

Couples was correct to reference the elements. Masters weather bulletins give a 90% chance of thunderstorms on Thursday. Gusts are forecast to reach 45mph either side of lunchtime.

The best golf clubs in moscow: luxury, exclusivity, and entertainment.

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

Moscow Country Club Moscow Country Club

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■
