BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL 2022 RETURNS AFTER 3-YEAR COVID HIATUS

The berlin travel festival (btf) 2022 closed its doors on november 27, marking its return after a three-year break due to covid..

Under the theme “Rediscover the world”, organisers of the event shed light on how ways of travelling has changed in a post-covid world.

From November 25-27, 2022, Berlin’s most unique travel and lifestyle festival returned to the halls of Messe Berlin. After three years of absence, the event reinvented itself with a brand new format. The Berlin Travel Festival , which is exclusively dedicated to consumers, was part of a unique leisure trade fair alliance consisting of the BTF but also of Boot & Fun Berlin , Angelwelt Berlin, Auto Camping Caravan and Transportetage . Through this merger, organisers succeeded in creating an even larger experience and information forum for consumers. For the consumers, the benefit was to only pay one ticket to access the five events.

The Berlin Travel Festival was endorsed by ITB Berlin. In the course of its strategic reorientation by focusing only on B2B visitors from 2023, ITB Berlin threw its support at the plan to turn the Berlin Travel Festival into the new home for weekend visitors of ITB Berlin in the future.

Managers of the BTF felt a duty to carry on the tradition of the ITB Visitor Weekend. They were convinced that the show was able to offer even more experiences and information thanks to the new leisure alliance with the four other shows.

Ecological and social responsability at the core of the Berlin Travel Festival

Representing a new generation of travellers, the Berlin Travel Festival focuses on innovative, sustainable concepts and advocates for a better shared future. Ecological and social responsibility are more than ever at the heart of the festival’s philosophy.

However, for the 2022 edition , organisers, exhibitors and speakers wanted to explore how travel has changed from before the pandemic outbreak and the war in Ukraine. Some 80 participants were recorded at the event, most of them being from Europe. However, Georgia (ITB Berlin’s partner country), Jordan and the Seychelles were also part of the event.

According to BTF management, drastic global changes have not only altered people’s view of the world, but cherished habits and routines have become obsolete.

No matter how and where we go, every trip feels a bit like rediscovering the world. We learned that even the smallest micro adventures are enormously important for our inner balance, but also had to realise that “wanderlust” (especially this idea of a very far-away desire for travelling) can only occur in the “real world”.

We are overjoyed by this merger to create an even greater experience and information forum for our community. We are embarking on this adventure and committing to this year’s motto. We want to present ways and methods how to Rediscover the world at the travel festival.”

In addition to the large number of exhibitors, the centre piece of the festival was once again an extensive programme on stage including numerous workshops as well as travel lectures. Culture surfer, professional weekender or family trip – there was inspiration for every kind of travel and traveller during the three days of the Berlin Travel Festival.

Berlin Travel Festival is a three-day event, bringing together new ways of travel with the new traveler. Between the 25 – 27 of November 2022 this unique Travel- and Lifestyle Festival will be back as part of a new leisure fair concept for private visitors. New travel and leisure offers, are now supplemented by the topics of boats, caravanning, camping and fishing. Four special trade fairs – Berlin Travel Festival, BOOT & FUN BERLIN, Angelwelt BERLIN und Auto Camping Caravan - are in the future practically under one roof to find.

Culture surfer, professional weekender or family trip – there will be inspiration for every kind of travel and traveler. All travelers’ needs will be met in five exhibitor areas: Outdoor Escapes, Culture Journey, Mobility, Travel & Lifestyle and Nest Area for innovative Start-Up ideas. On top of that a broad and versatile program including workshops can be expected.

The festival is a celebration of the new consciousness in travel and tourism. The festival organizers endeavor to engage, debate and exchange with thinkers, brands and travelers on this journey.

Berlin. Das Berlin Travel Festival ist die zukunftsweisende Messe für eine neue Generation von Reisenden und eine Kombination aus Konferenz, Ausstellung, Networking-Event, Workshops, Master Classes und Entertainment.

Unter den mehr als 100 Ausstellern des Travel Festival Berlin sind etliche der innovativsten Reise-Unternehmen vertreten. Ob Hotels, Destinationen oder Reise-Apps, die Themen der Reisemesse reichen von Digital Detox, nachhaltigem Reisen bis zu afrikanischen Safaris oder Camperleben.

Auf den Erlebnisflächen des Festivals präsentieren sich wegweisende Marken, die individualisiert auf den übermächtigen Reisenden von heute eingehen. Festivalbesucher können sich mit Experten austauschen, während sie in Kultur, Technologie, Mode, Ausrüstung und Trends aus aller Welt eintauchen.

PROGRAMMTHEMEN UND ERSTE SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS

OUTDOOR & ADVENTURE: Natur, Draußen sein und Übernachten unter freiem Himmel sind für die Speaker dieser Kategorie Daily Business. Christo Foerster beweist, dass wir nicht immer weit reisen müssen, um ein Abenteuer zu erleben. Er nimmt Festival Besucher:innen mit in seine Welt der Mikroabenteuer. Mit seinem Buch “Abenteuerland” inspirierte er schon viele Menschen, seinem Motto zu folgen – nämlich einfach “rausgehen und machen”.

NEW WAYS OF TRAVEL: Die Begriffe Slow und Conscious Travel stehen für den New Traveler und ein neues Bewusstsein des Reisens. Hier gehört der Weg zur Reise dazu und auch die Keywords Workation und Staycation fallen in diese Kategorie. Cindy Ruch zeigt, wie spaßig und abwechslungsreich die Zugreise ist. Sie ist freiberufliche Reisejournalistin, Fotografin und Übersetzerin und kennt sich bestens in Berlin aus!

CULTURE TRIPS: Kultur, Kulinarik, Menschen – den Vibe und die Stimmung einer Stadt oder Landes zu erkunden und einfangen. Er reiste von London bis Newcastle, ohne einen Innenraum oder ein geschlossenes Fahrzeug zu betreten – so trotzte Bestsellerautor Stephan Orth in England der Pandemie. Carina Linnemann hat Kommunikationsdesign studiert, arbeitet als Creative Directorin und Dozentin für Design, schreibt mit Leidenschaft in ihrer Freizeit Briefe, Bücher und Blog-Einträge und lebt mit ihrer Familie in Düsseldorf. Von dort aus bereist sie die Welt und das seit einigen Jahren auch begeistert im selbst ausgebautem Bulli. Ihre Erlebnisse wird sie mit den Berlin Travel Festival Besucher:innen im November 2022 teilen.

The Berlin Travel Festival 2022

The Berlin Travel Festivalwas held at Messe Berlin, Germany from the 25 th to 26 th Nov 2022. The three day travel exhibition focused on business to customer and was the first of its kind to focus on the traveller; as the international Travel show Berlin in March 2023 will focus on B2B Business to Business.

The Festival/Expo attracted various business from Europe and out of Europe. Countries present included Georgia (Host Country) Bulgaria, Canada, Germany,Jordan, Latvia, Malta,St.Martin,Seychelles, Spain and South Africa.

Counties at the Expo

  Georgia was the official host company for the 2022 Berlin Travel Expo.

Georgia shared activities that the country has to offer in terms of travel. The mountain resorts of Georgia, ski areas such as in the Svanoti region. Summer activities  also include :camping, mountain biking, hiking and paragliding.

Germany was represented by man regions with Berlin also having a stand showing what one can do in Berlin. The other region that also came on very strongly represented was the region of Brandenburg Brandenburg lies between Germany and Hamburg and its known for its iconic views and ambience and hospitality.  

The third region in Germany that was well represented was Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The region is known for its grandiose castles and one can organize a tour to each of them. The best times to discover is in the summer where one can book a sigh-seeing tour of all the beautiful castles in the area. The representation went ahead and even set a table as one would be set in the castles.

The Czech Republic was well represented. Showcasing is touristy sports including Prague, which most argue is the most beautiful city in Europe. The region is also known for its mind-blowing spa treatments.

Malta made a great showcase for the expo. With a representative from the ministry of tourism explaining what Malta has to offer. When other European countries are experiencing winter, Malta has over 20 degrees during this time of the year. Valletta ,Malta’s capital and has a lot to offer.

The top destinations to discover in Malta are: The Valletta Waterfront, the Muza, The Upper Barrakka Gardens, The National Museum for Archeology, The Grand Master’s place, The Fort St.Elmo, The Manoel Theatre, The Sacra Infermia, The Sacra Infermia, The Casa Rocca Piccola and St. John’s Co-Cathedral.

Balcan and Baltic countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia and Latvia were also present at the expo. Bulgaria has to offer in matter tourism .From its capital Sofia that makes you travel through time due to its historic buildings and its beaches along the black sea, Bulgaria a major highlight  for travel enthusiasts.

Africa was represented by two countries: Seychelles and South Africa . Seychelles known for its iconic oceans and beaches. The Seychelles is a most visit destinations for travel enthusiasts and wanderlusters who love the ocean.

South Africa had a stand showcased a south African product named ‘The great African Grater:’ A small grater in the form of a plate that grates, cheese, nuts, garlic, turmeric and ginger. The travel industry is always looking for innovation and practical solitions, having such a device for everyday use and not just for travel is the kind of # sustainability we need in the travel industry.

Two other countries that were also at the Expo were Palestine and Jordan . Palestine was also presented at the expo by a tear operator and the showcased what an extraordinary destination the Palestine is.  Rich in culture and history. The stand also offered some sweets from the beautiful country.

 Jordan was represented by a representative at the ministry of tourism in Germany. Jordan is recently becoming a travel destination favourite. Although it is famous for the ancient city of Petra, carved from rock over 2000 years ago it also offers much more for the modern traveller. There are more areas to explore including the iconic Wadi Rum, The Dead Sea and amazing Desert Castles.

Last but not least, the French island of St. Martin was present at the expo too. They offered food and delicious St.Martin food as a representation of the amazing food from the Island.

The Berlin Travel Expo provided an opportunities for businesses to showcase their products. It was amazing to see the sleeping living solutions for everyday travel.

This innovative ‘hut’/house is comfortable and offers a bed away from home. The company that makes this tent is known as sleeporo. Read more on this impactful, exclusive and sustainable innovation on https://sleeperoo.de/en .

The expo also had a variety of tiny houses on display. The tiny houses either on water land are amazing opportunities that travelers’ hope will be continued to be revolutionized to offer practicability and comfort in every day travel.

Condor Airlines was also present at the Berlin Travel Festival 2022. Actually it was the only airline present. In the future, hopefully we will have more airlines showacasing their services. Condor Airlines showcased their business class and provided an opportunity to experience its business class. The business class offers lots of leg room, comfort and leisure.

Live Sessions

The live sessions at the event also offered opportunity for seasoned travellers to offer their tips on travel. One session that was inspiring was a session with ‘Zewedi’ a black woman living in Germany who uses a platform to talk about the travel experiences of a black person. The lesson here is that when travelling to a foreign land leave all stereotypes and go with an open mind to experience the culture and way of life of the natives.

The second panel that was also intriguing was ‘Stephan Orth’ who shared his travel experience in the UK in 2020.  His biggest take away was travelling without causing harm to the environment and how 5 weeks of travel did him good. He was happier and even healthier.

Sustainability was also a recurring theme on those year’s expo. How does one travel sustainably? This question was discussed by a panel that discussed ‘how does one fly sustainably?’

There are many ways in which one can do that is: one should try take a flight that fly directly to destination. Secondly, one should also take a flight where the commission and green cards have been catered for. The question of sustainability in travel continues to be one that must be addressed as we progress and revolutionize the travel industry. The future of the travel industry is set to change especially after the Covid-19 pandemic and the way travellers are becoming more conscious of their travel choices in matters of the impact on the environment and tried to travel sustainably.

One can say the Berlin Travel was worth attending. There was so much to experience and to learn. Also due to the fact that a boat Exhibition was running parallel to the Berlin Travel Expo. This provided an opportunity for travellers who love being on the water to sample boats, surfing equipment and even swimming gear.

From Nov. 25 to Nov. 27, 2022, the travel event will run in Berlin's exhibition halls, bringing you countless sources of inspiration for new travel opportunities and new destinations.

A diverse list of speakers will share their travel experiences, inspire and motivate to explore the world through new and sustainable ways!

Exhibitors and speakers include nature photographers, travel journalists, travel bloggers and others with a focus on sustainable travel.

Among them are Charlott Tornow from the popular travel blog "Reisevergnügen" ("New Ways of Travel" on 27.11. from 12.30h). , authors of the publishing house Reisedepeschen and also the "most travelled woman in the world" Christine Thürmer.

Christo Foerster is an adventurer, best-selling author, and change expert.

What is so special about the Berlin Travel Festival?

What is so special about the Berlin Travel Festival and what sets it apart from other festivals?

The organizers see themselves as "representatives of a new generation of travelers who, with the Travel Festival, value innovative, sustainable concepts and are committed to a better shared future. Ecological and social responsibility are central components of the festival philosophy.

In contrast to trade fairs such as the ITB (the world's largest travel trade fair - also in Berlin), the (large) travel companies are not the main players here.

New travel trends will be presented that you won't see at other trade shows for a few years at the earliest - if ever.

And you will have the opportunity to get in touch directly with travel bloggers, adventurers, experts in intercultural and sustainable travel - and exchange ideas with them.

It's a physical trade show where you're not just a short text in the social media comment columns, but can get real interaction with travel experts.

My own experience

Already in 2018 and 2019 I had the opportunity to visit the (quite) new Travel Festival, meet like-minded people and learn about new travel formats.

The relaxed atmosphere here immediately brings you into contact with other travel bloggers and new topics.

So it's not just a one-way show, but also a suitable meeting place to meet new people with the same travel interests.

The Berlin Travel Festival will take place from Dec. 01-03, 2023, and will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. all days. With the ticket you get admission to the Berlin Travel Festival as well as our partner fairs Boat & Fun, Anglingworld Berlin and Auto Camping Caravan.

Note: All tickets in our store are so-called online tickets. This means that you get the tickets digitally. It does not mean that the Berlin Travel Festival will take place online. We will be there and look forward to seeing you there!

Boat & fun berlin continues to expand.

Over 800 international exhibitors and brands reported good business and displayed a wide range of products and services focusing on water sports, adventure and mobility on, in and around water. From 24 to 27 November, over 48,000 visitors from all parts of Germany came to the boating and leisure exhibition on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds

Berlin, 29 November 2022 – From 24 to 27 November, on around 85,000 m² in 14 halls on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, the focus was on water sports, adventure and mobility on, in and around water. As one of the largest boating exhibitions with an emphasis on lakes, inland waterways and coastal waters, BOAT & FUN BERLIN not only presented trends and innovations for water sports enthusiasts and tourists, but also a wide range of exhibits for fishing enthusiasts, travelholics, fans of camping and outdoor activities. Together with Germany's largest trade fair on the popular sport of fishing –  ANGLINGWORLD BERLIN –, AUTO CAMPING CARAVAN, TRANSPORTER DAYS BERLIN and for the first time the BERLIN TRAVEL FESTIVAL, BOAT & FUN BERLIN has become Germany’s largest boating and leisure exhibition for water sports, outdoor activities, adventure and travel.

“A wider range of products, more exhibitors, higher turnover – BOAT & FUN BERLIN continues to expand and is now even stronger than in the years before the pandemic. More international exhibitors, visitors from all parts of Germany – today BOAT & FUN BERLIN is much more than a regional trade fair in eastern Germany. We have become a major player in Germany and established ourselves as the exhibition and place to be for water sports, outdoor activities, adventure and travel. We are absolutely delighted that BOAT & FUN BERLIN has become a firm fixture on the calendar of international exhibitors and brands“, said Daniel Barkowski, the project manager for BOAT & FUN BERLIN, in his positive assessment of the trade fair. “We had good feedback from exhibitors. Expectations prior to the event were somewhat low due to a situation dominated by crises – so we were delighted to hear reports of numerous business deals, high turnover and keen interest in purchases“, Barkowski added.

With over 800 international exhibitors and brands on a display area of around 85,000 m², BOAT & FUN BERLIN’s results exceeded those of 2019, which was a record year. It means the trade fair is continuing to expand strongly – with more international exhibitors than ever. Taking part this year were companies and brands from Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Georgia, Hungary, Jordan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the Seychelles, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.

BOAT & FUN BERLIN presented an impressively wide range of brands and models for water sports and outdoor activities in the heart of Europe’s largest region for water sports. From canoes to luxury yachts – BOAT & FUN BERLIN displayed boats in practically every size and class, including many making their first appearance in Germany or on the world stage. Models from all the leading international brands and manufacturers were represented in Berlin, including from Alfastreet, Aqualine, Bavaria, Bayliner, Beneteau, Comitti, Delphia, Fjord, Frauscher, Galeon, Greenline, Interboat, Jeanneau, Karnic, Marex, Marian, Mastercraft, my-electroboat, Powerboat, Prestige, Quicksilver, Ryck, Sea Ray, Silver, Sunbeam, Tes Yacht, X Shore and Zodiac, as well as many others.

From Schleswig-Holstein to Bavaria – over 48,000 visitors from almost every corner of Germany came to see the 20th edition of BOAT & FUN BERLIN and were more than satisfied with the event, as was confirmed in an initial survey by Messe Berlin. Accordingly, over 90 per cent of the visitors polled were satisfied with their visit. Whether electrically powered or conventionally motorised models – this year, motorboats and motor yachts were again in demand. At the same time the Camping & Caravan, Equipment, Fishing, Sailing and Houseboat segments also attracted keen interest. Nine out of ten respondents said they would visit BOAT & FUN BERLIN again next year and also recommend the boating and leisure exhibition to relatives, friends and acquaintances.

Save the date: event dates in 2023

Water sports enthusiasts and tourists will already be meeting in August in Werder an der Havel, where from 25 to 27 August 2023 BOAT & FUN INWATER  will be displaying boats in their usual surroundings for the sixth time. In late November, BOAT & FUN BERLIN  will again be extending an invitation to this event in the halls on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, which traditionally opens with the GALA-NIGHT OF THE BOATS. The virtual platform of  BOAT & FUN ONLINE  is the third member of the BOAT & FUN brand family and available 365 days a year. The social media channels with their global reach and the website of BOAT & FUN  each offer respective platform services.

Stefan Naust, Beautiful Boats: “The individually themed segments are what define BOAT & FUN BERLIN – visitors can navigate the fair easily and find out directly what interests them. Those keen on electric models can check out the E-Boat Salon for example. We felt very much at home here. We talked to lots of interested visitors on our stand who wanted to find out more about electric boats. We were particularly surprised as well as delighted by the crowds on the opening evening. The GALA-NIGHT OF THE BOATS really was a great start to a great trade fair.“

Norman Bauer, Boat Lounge: “We have been coming back to BOAT & FUN BERLIN since 2006, and I must say that Daniel Barkowski and his team have elevated the boating and leisure exhibition here in the Berlin/Brandenburg region to another level. This is a fantastic development for the region and for Germany as well. I would actually go so far as to say that in Germany all we need is Boot in Düsseldorf and BOAT & FUN here in Berlin.“

Catina Buchardi, aqua marin – Boote und Yachten: “Demand for electric boats is growing, there is keen interest. So it was fitting that with the presentation of the Delphia 10 LoungeTop, a world debut, we displayed a model that is also electrically powered. The response was impressive. In addition to customers, other retailers also came to the show to see the boat for themselves. Overall, we registered keen interest and feedback from both customers and trade visitors on the stand. Once again, we are extremely satisfied. We did good business and as a team enjoyed our stay in Berlin. It really was a wonderful, successful end-of-year event here at BOAT & FUN BERLIN.“

Olaf Lieberwirth, Reiseland Brandenburg:  “For Reiseland Brandenburg, having the Berlin Travel Festival 2022 at a new venue was a success. The fascinating and diverse selection of companies at the festival resulted in excellent opportunities for networking and created a friendly atmosphere among exhibitors. We benefited from the wide range of visitors at the combined events and were able to fascinate them with the festival mood at the event and naturally by promoting Brandenburg as a travel destination along with the regions represented here.“

I thought 2021 was really good – but 2022 definitely topped that. Berlin is the ideal city for a trade fair like this, in particular because it has lots of water and many fishing enthusiasts come here. In my view, combining fishing, boats and water sports with camping and caravanning is a great idea because it naturally creates synergies.“

Kai Launhardt, Shimano: “This year is the first time we were at ANGLINGWORLD BERLIN and I have to say my expectations were exceeded. We had a great many visitors on our stand, witnessed keen interest and had very positive feedback from all sides. ANGLINGWORLD BERLIN is a fantastic platform for the fishing scene. The exhibitor line-up was impressive and really was a highlight, not only for visitors but for us as exhibitors too.“

Scandal at a film festival is usually generated by provocative auteurs or loose-lipped actors stirring up drama at press conferences. Last weekend’s laid-back Sonoma International Film Festival, held in the heart of California wine country, was a different story.

Vicente arrived at Sundance in 2021 from her post as executive director of the Toronto International Film Festival, assuming her new job at an impossible moment. COVID-19 had shuttered theaters, restricted travel and forced Sundance to present that year’s slate of films online. The circumstances plummeted the organization into financial chaos. Revenues were down $22 million in 2021 compared with the previous year (sinking to $34 million from 2020’s $56 million haul, according to ProPublica). Remarkably, 2022 saw revenues shoot up to $58.6 million as Vicente carried the event through an unprecedented digital rollout. That year, Sundance also shrank its liabilities by $2 million on Vicente’s watch, according to filings.

While Vicente and her employer emphasized that it was her decision to step down, three sources with knowledge of the matter tell Variety that Vicente was increasingly scrutinized by the Sundance Institute’s board of trustees. Vicente is known as an elegant leader with a brain for operations who never steps off message, but her abilities as a fundraiser raised questions, the sources say. The CEO of Sundance is ultimately responsible for both securing and managing corporate dollars and attracting private donors.

The question on the minds of many in the indie film community — not to mention the larger entertainment ecosystem that relies on Sundance for prestige product and added marketing value — is why Vicente departed after such a brief time, especially given the “tremendous asset” she proved to be?

Variety spoke with more than a dozen industry insiders who have long participated in and observed Sundance up close. The board of trustees is “a handful, to put it politely,” one indie film and TV executive says. Its chair is the well-heeled Ebs Burnough, a filmmaker and onetime adviser to First Lady Michelle Obama. Legacy members include environmentalists, a software engineering mogul and activists who are, according to two sources, connected to Redford (or wish to huddle round his cool flame). Newer entrants over the years — Jason Blum, Tessa Thompson, Gigi Pritzker, Charles D. King — lend the board legitimacy in the wider filmmaking community.

“It feels like they really didn’t give her a shot,” another high-flying film executive says of the board’s relationship with Vicente. ”But they could make anyone weary.” Another source close to Sundance disputed this characterization, saying as with many nonprofits, the leadership is “engaged and very passionate.” The board once again named one of its own as interim CEO: former Instagram executive Amanda Kelso, who filled in as acting leader between Putnam’s exit and Vicente’s hire. Kelso is liked within the organization if not well known in Hollywood circles. She’ll be around for some time, Variety previously reported, with insiders estimating it could be nearly a year before a CEO search is conducted in earnest.

You can’t blame the board for prioritizing a long-term revenue strategy, if indeed some took issue with Vicente’s chops in that department. Film festivals are in crisis the world over. The annual festival in Berlin has faced serious budget cuts and shed programs as a result. Last year, Toronto lost big-money title sponsor Bell. To its credit, Sundance has maintained all of its top sponsors over the past few years of turbulence. Unlike its European and Canadian counterparts, the Park City fest does not receive funding from the federal government. No matter how it got here, it must pave a new road up the mountain.

“The role of CEO at a place like Sundance needs to evolve,” an indie sales agent notes, “and so do the festivals, if any of us are going to survive.”
