ROUTE EXPECTATIONS:

bike tour canada

This is a spectacular ride, moderate most of the time, but with some black diamond challenges including two climbs of about 400m. Electric bikes are available if you prefer to make things easier. Gravel or hybrid/fitness bikes are the most versatile and popular. The riding surface is almost entirely paved and traffic-shared, except for the optional routes on the first day of riding, for which we recommend gravel or hybrid bikes. There is a rail trail with a crusher dust surface, and a coastal ride on a rough gravel road, both of which can be avoided by riding a paved-but-not-as-attractive road. Road bikes are otherwise suitable for the week.

Daily Distance:

  • 1: Introductions.
  • 2: Inverness to Cheticamp. Short ~42km; Long ~67km.
  • 3: Cheticamp to Dingwall. Short ~47km; Long ~78km.
  • 4: Dingwall to Ingonish. Short ~31km; Long ~54km.
  • 5: Ingonish to North River. Short ~44km; Long ~61km.
  • 6: North River to Baddeck. ~35km.

Activity Levels

The easiest routes we offer, these are generally flat and cover relatively relaxed distances. You will be comfortable riding a hybrid bike, walking in sneakers, or paddling a light kayak, and will normally have time to take many photos and enjoy extended lunches.

This is primarily an easy route, but some days may fall into the moderate category. You can expect time to stop and smell the roses, but some of the rides may be on more hilly terrain.

Requiring moderate fitness levels, these cover terrain with hills and valleys, and tend to include distances of 50-80km (30-50mi.)/day cycling, or 3-6 hours of walking per day. Most Freewheeling Adventures fall into this category, and are suitable for most ability levels.

This is primarily a moderate route, suitable for most ability levels, but some days may be a little more challenging. You can expect some long distances, and/or some big climbs/descents.

The most challenging trips, these include longer distances, bigger hills, long hikes, exposed paddling, and full days of activity. We recommend a higher degree of fitness and training to make the most of the experience.

There is also a rare double black diamond, reserved for only the most difficult adventures.

Atlantic Provinces

Start:  Shuttle to Cape Breton (~4hrs) departs Halifax,  The Lord Nelson Hotel , 13:00, day one. If you plan to drive your own vehicle to Cape Breton, contact us to discuss parking options.

Please contact us to arrange alternate meeting and departure plans, if necessary.

Introductions.

An optional transfer departs Halifax at midday. Otherwise, meet late this afternoon at your first inn, where you can park your car for the week if you’re driving yourself.

Meal Inclusions: Dinner.

Inverness to cheticamp. short ~42km; long ~67km..

Ride on the rail trail into the pretty village of Inverness – home to one of the highest rated golf courses in the world, a horseracing track, and a fabulous beach. From there, follow Broad Cove Banks along a spectacular coastal ride, with stops at two more wonderful beaches, to where the Margaree River spills into the sea at Margaree Harbour. Short option riders will transfer to Cheticamp from Belle Côte. The long option follows the ocean through the Acadian coastal region to Cheticamp. If you arrive early enough, you can spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring this very Acadian town and its surroundings. There are hiking, off-road riding, and swimming opportunities, and you can sometimes whale watch from the bluffs at Cheticamp Island.

Meal Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch.

Cheticamp to dingwall. short ~47km; long ~78km..

Today is a challenging day of cycling through Cape Breton Highlands National Park; cycling distances and terrain can be adjusted using transfers. Short option finishes at MacIntosh Brook with a transfer to your inn at Dingwall. Long option includes climbing the second of two ‘mountains’ each of about 430m/1400 feet. The scenery today is awe-inspiring; the ascents are long, and the descents…ahh, the descents! If only they’d go on forever.

Meal Inclusions: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Dingwall to ingonish. short ~31km; long ~54km..

Cycle the scenic route between Cape North and Neil’s Harbour (where the shorter ride begins), stopping for a short hike at spectacular White Point, where eagles often soar over spouting whales. Options include swimming holes, waterfalls, beaches, and golf at the Highland Links.

Ingonish to North River. Short ~44km; Long ~61km.

A nicely undulating ride along the East Coast follows the initial climb over Cape Smokey. You can choose to ease the ride with a transfer up and over Smokey. Enjoy a picnic at Indian Brook or an interesting café in the middle of nowhere, and finish at a secluded inn on the shores of St. Anne’s Bay.

Meal Inclusions: Breakfast, Dinner.

North river to baddeck. ~35km..

On this morning’s ride to Baddeck, you can stop to visit the Gaelic College Great Hall of the Clans Museum, or if you are already in Baddeck, visit the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. Bell’s airplane, the Silver Dart, was airborne about the same time as the Kitty Hawk. There are good lunch options to choose from in the waterfront village of Baddeck, before returning to Glenora or Halifax with our free shuttle.

Meal Inclusions: Breakfast.

GET TO THE START

If you fly: The best option is to fly to Halifax (YHZ). We meet you at your inn in Halifax, for a transfer (four hours) to Cape Breton Island with the Freewheeling shuttle. Halifax’s downtown core is located about half an hour from its airport. Taxis are readily available; Maritime Bus offers an airport express shuttle ($40 roundtrip or $22 one way); and Halifax Transit provides hourly departures on its MetroX bus service ($4.25 fare). If you drive: Meet at your first inn, day one. It is 400km from Halifax, 1500km from New York, and 2000km from Toronto. You can park at the inn for the week.

AFTER THE FINISH

Cycling finishes mid-afternoon on the last day, normally in Baddeck. Freewheeling shuttle gets you back to Halifax usually by about 19:30pm. It is best to fly out the following morning. Contact us for hotel recommendations.

BEFORE AND AFTER

If you have one day:.

Rent a car (we can drop you at Halifax airport on day 6), and visit Wolfville, from where you can experience the highest tides in the world by car or on a 4-hour hike, visit wineries in the Gaspereau Valley, or just enjoy the rural university town.

Join us for a day trip kayaking on the South Shore, or rent a bike from our HQ and ride the Aspotogan loop.

If you have several days:

Extend your trip without leaving Cape Breton Island on the 6-day Cape Breton Hike experience. Join one of our other rides in Nova Scotia , or the adjacent provinces, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland .

We recommend the following accommodations in Halifax for before or after your tour; please let us know if we can assist with reservations:

  • The Lord Nelson , 1515 South Park Street Ph: 902-423-6331 or 800-565-2020

This is one of the world’s greatest rides; one that all touring cyclists should have on their “must-ride” list! The beautiful coast – the most dramatic in Nova Scotia - meets the breathtaking highlands in ways that make you appreciate both to the fullest, and the scenic magnificence of the paved trail can be truly savoured at the speed of your bicycle. The landscape and the people may demonstrate to you why Nova Scotia’s name means New Scotland. You can choose to linger at the famous Highland Links if you prefer golf to cycling, and on some days you can expand your rides onto beautiful wooded trails, or to find swimming holes beneath waterfalls. The cycling, although manageable by most cyclists (and van-supported for the rest!), includes some challenging sections – especially on day three with two 1400ft climbs. Combining such awe-inspiring scenery and out-of–the-way charm with comfortable inns and exceptional cuisine makes this loop ride an exquisite experience you simply have to add to your list!

Bike Tour FAQs

Should i tip my bike tour guide.

While not mandatory, tipping is appropriate and our guides certainly appreciate it for a job well done! As in other service-based industries, tipping encourages the outstanding service that our guides continue to provide. Please consider this when planning your monetary needs on the tour.

What time should I arrive for the tour? What if I’m late?

Please arrive no less than 15 minutes in advance of your tour departure so that you have time to sign a waiver form and be fitted for bike and helmet.

Tours start promptly at the time stated. We cannot wait for late guests as this affects the experience of other riders. If you are late, please try calling as we may be able to help you catch up to the group.

Where do the bike tours start and end?

All Cycle City bike tours depart from and return to our shop at 648 Hornby Street .

Do I have to book a bike tour in advance?

Yes, please book a bike tour in advance as space is limited. You can book your desired tour and departure time on our bookings page . If you’d like to join a tour departing in the next 24 hours, please  contact us  directly to see if we can find you a place.

What if it rains on the day of my bike tour?

Our city is located in a Temperate Coastal Rainforest climate, so it does rain here regularly. As Vancouverites, we don’t let “liquid sunshine” keep us from riding and our tours depart rain or shine. You can still have an amazing tour if dressed for the weather, and we provide light ponchos for your use.

Our 24 hour cancellation policy allows you to cancel the day before if the forecast looks bad.  Tour guests can now also pay an additional 7% fee to extend the cancellation policy to 1 Hr before departure for those that prefer to make a last minute decision.

Please Note: June, July, August and September are typically the driest months of the year, but it is wise to bring along an extra layer just in case the forecast indicates a chance of rain ( local forecast ).

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel your booking for a full refund with minimum 24 hours notice before your departure time. Due to limited space on our public tours, no refund is possible within 24 hours of tour departure. Read our cancellation policy for more details.

Please Note: We may be able to reschedule your booking if unforeseen circumstances arise. This is based on tour availability.

Bike Tour Niagara-on-the-Lake, Vineyards, and Niagara Falls

Our bike tour in the Niagara Wine Country takes you to the region’s best wineries, along peaceful bike paths, and to luxurious inns. Upon arrival on the Niagara Peninsula, cycle along the Niagara River to breathtaking Niagara Falls. Enjoy a private reception in the wine cellar of your inn’s winery that evening. Spin through vineyards and orchards, stopping for lunch at a winery with expansive views across Lake Ontario all the way to Toronto. Follow the Welland Canal, watching as massive ships navigate a 326-foot elevation change between Lakes Ontario and Erie through a series of locks. As you near Niagara-on-the-Lake, pause for wine and fresh peaches, pears, plums, and apples at local orchards. Niagara-on-the-Lake offers opportunities for horse-drawn carriage rides, world-renowned theatrical performances, rounds of golf, boat rides, and spa treatments. Along the Niagara River Recreation Trail, stop at historical points of interest dating back to the War of 1812 and visit the well-manicured Botanical Gardens. Finally, take a private tour and enjoy a tasting with the winemaker at Stratus Winery.

bike tour canada

Impressive mountains, dense woods, flower fields, clear rivers - all of this makes Banff one of the most beautiful places on earth. A good way to get an overview of the city is to take the Sulphur Mountain Gondola - snow covered mountains and woods as far as you can see.

Lake Louise

bike tour canada

One of the most photographed mountain lakes in the world, the azure blue color of Lake Louise is astounding. The color of the water comes from the minerals in the surrounding soil. One could easily spend the day here and rent a small boat to float away the hours under the towering peaks.

Icefields Parkway

bike tour canada

It’s bold, it’s beautiful, and this is one road trip you’ll never forget. The spectacular Icefields Parkway is considered one of the world’s finest scenic drives. Travel past magnificent peaks, pristine mountain lakes, and ancient hanging glaciers on Highway 93 North. It stretches 144 miles between Lake Louise and the town of Jasper along the backbone of the Canadian Rockies and offers unparalleled access to pristine wilderness. You’ll want to stop for pictures of cascading clear waterfalls, breathtaking viewpoints, and brilliant turquoise blue lakes. Take a moment to read the roadside interpretive displays that illustrate the importance of this area and its early exploration. If you’re lucky, you might glimpse a black bear, a moose, or bighorn sheep along the way.

Canada West Tour CCW

Gigantic mountain ranges, roaring rivers, never-ending forests and remote highways.

Motorcycle riders love the extraordinary scenery on our tour through Canada's West. Why? It seems as if all of the pine tree forests, sparkling lakes and rivers and mountain ranges of the world can be found here in the West of Canada. This spectacular ride will leave you with 2,000 miles of memories. The Canadian Rockies are located at the northern end of the North American Rocky Mountain Range and run through two of Canada’s provinces: Alberta and British Columbia. However, towns like Jasper or Banff will make you feel like you’re in the Great White North. The famous Icefields Parkway with its snow-capped mountaintops is surrounded by beautiful blue water and enormous glaciers and also Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, is part of our tour. Not only does this part of North America offer excellent sightseeing, but the curving roads and the beautiful scenery will make it difficult for you to distinguish dream from reality – not surprising in this paradise!
