We did not realize that we were the only passengers speaking English as their first language

From Portugal to Spain: Porto, the Douro Valley (Portugal) and Salamanca (Spain) (port-to-port cruise) Tour

From Portugal to Spain: Porto, the Douro Valley (Portugal) and Salamanca (Spain) (port-to-port cruise)

The 8 day cruise on the Duoro from Porto to Salamanca return was one of the most memorable travel experiences for me. Although there were only 7 English speaking guests (in which my partner and 1 were included) amongst mainly French guests , we never felt excluded in any way. The Purser Mike and the Guest coordinator Susannah(? with the lovely long curly hair) went over and beyond our expectations in making us feel welcome and included. All announcements were made in French and English and we never felt that the information relayed was lacking.. It was the same with all the other staff and crew members right down to the deckhands who worked very hard to give us a most enjoyable experience. Nothing was too much for them and they went over and beyond to ensure we got everything we requested . Foodwise it was 5 star cuisine for lunch and dinner each day- mostly French-exquisitely presented with satisfyingly adequate portions and delicious at all times. Complimentary Cocktails and wines were available all day (unlike other cruise companies) . Coffee, tea , refreshments sparkling and still water were also on tap 24/7.The breakfast buffet was more than adequate although it tended to be monotonous . In saying this it still fulfilled its purpose for us. The entertainment on board was also of a high standard esp the Flamenco dancing . There were also other activities like quizes, aline dancing lesson , keepfit session , which appeared to be enjoyed by all who participated. The tours were well organised and we had excellent guides who were professional and informative. I have been on a river cruise with another reputable company in the past but the experience with Croisi Europe far surpassed my expectations. The quality and value for money was outstanding and i will not hesitate to sail with them again.

Charming Portugal Highlights - 10 Days

Absolutely fantastic company to deal with, don't hesitate to use them! Mar 2023 • Friends My girlfriend and I just got back from a dream Portugal trip from 3/3/23-3/13/23. I want to start by saying... DON'T HESITATE TO USE THIS COMPANY!!! We customized our trip with Daniela who is an ABSOLUTE pleasure to work with, and so incredibly responsive! We had great tour guides particularly Pedro in Lisbon. We had a couple of cruises, a cooking class, top notch dinners and lunches. We saw so much of Portugal in the short time we were there due to the precise planning Daniela organized and we actually customized it a bit more when we were there. It was very important to me to see some synagogues and for some reason I failed to mention that prior to going but... Daniela did her magic. She got us into one of the oldest synagogues in Europe in Tomar and into another synagogue in Porto. So very much appreciated. Can't wait to use Portugal Travel Center again and thank you so much for an unforgettable vacation.

Unforgettable Douro with Lisbon

Reviews of douro cruises.

A very pleasant 8 day experience but really more like a five day cruise. The cruise information was incomplete, leaving out interesting opportunities along the way (Port museums and prehistoric rock art,) most particularly an excursion to Salamanca, which turned out to be a highlight for us. The food was good but not as interesting as Portuguese restaurants in Porto or even at home in Canada.

The River Douro

After the Tagus and the Ebro, the Douro River is the longest on the Iberian Peninsula. The Douro River is nearly 900 kilometres long and starts in the Spanish province of Soria. From there, the River Douro flows into Northern Portugal and ends in the Atlantic Ocean in Porto.

Porto boat tours

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and is famous for its Port wines. From the vineyards of the Douro Valley, wine was transported downriver in flat-bottom boats.

Then, the wines would be stored in barrels in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, a city and municipality on the other side of the river in Porto. One of the best ways to enjoy the beautiful city and the river is by embarking on a river cruise in Porto.

Best Porto boat tours

Along the shores of Ribeira Quay , a river cruise awaits! There are several providers, but which one should you choose? And what will you see along the way? Let’s discover the different options before you make your reservation for the boat tours.

Porto boat tours

The 6 Bridges cruise

The Six Bridges cruise is by far the most popular tour on the river. As the name suggests, the Porto boat tour will take you to the six bridges of the city (more about these later). The 6 Bridges Cruise starts on the Porto side at Ribeira’s or Vila Nova de Gaia’s quay.

There are several companies to choose from , and all will sail along the six bridges. All carriers are suitable, but the difference is primarily notable in the type of boat you’ll travel with.

How long is the Six Bridges cruise?

Usually, a boat tour takes 50 minutes and departs on the hour. In summer, you can enjoy the boat tour from 11 AM until 6 PM. In winter, the cruises are available between 11 AM and 4 PM.

Please note: not all cruises are guided. Some offer an audio guide on board. Some boat tours provide drinks and snacks on board for an additional price. Be sure to make an online reservation , as these Porto boat tours can sell out !

Step on board a Rabelo boat

One of the most unique ways to discover the Douro River is by stepping onboard a Rabelo boat ! You follow the wine merchants ‘ footsteps during the traditional Porto boat tour   experience. Besides, you’ll learn more about the wine cellars and the transportation of wine.

Cruises last 50 minutes and will sail along the six bridges. This river cruise departs from Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

Porto boat tours

The Douro River from a sailboat

You can step on board a sailing boat for the best panoramic views of Porto during sunset . While you enjoy sipping your wine, you’ll see the Ponte Luis I bridge, the old city, Foz do Douro and Ponte da Arrabida.

A relaxing cruise on a sailboat usually lasts 2 hours and departs from Douro Marina. A sailboat cruise won’t cover the six bridges, but instead, you get to enjoy the Douro’s mouth before it streams into the Atlantic Ocean with the small group.

Private bridges tours

If you prefer private tours, there are a bunch of different options. Enjoy a private speedboat cruise , for example, and enjoy the views over the riverbanks of Porto. A private tour usually takes two hours, but there are customised routes available.

Your private guide will tell you more about the city’s history, and you will receive a traditional Portuguese welcome drink on board. A private tour is great if you want to avoid the crowds, enjoy a romantic trip to Porto, or celebrate a special moment with friends .

What are the six bridges in Porto?

After mentioning the six bridges numerous times, you might wonder what these are and why they are so famous. A tour guide will tell you more about the structures during the Bridges River cruise , but let’s have a look at what you can expect during the Bridges tour.

Porto boat tours 5

Ponte Dom Luis I

Let’s start with the most famous one of all : the Ponte Dom Luis I. It is the icon of Porto and connects the city in the north with Vila Nova de Gaia in the south. Téophile Seyrig, a German architect, designed the Dom Luis Bridge. He was a business partner of French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel , hence you might get some Eiffel Tower vibes.

Porto boat tours

The building of Ponte Dom Luís I over the Douro River finished in 1886 , and it was initially built for cars. Nowadays, the Porto metro line D crosses the upper deck of the Dom Luís Bridge, and there is a pedestrian walkway.

The lower deck is accessible for road traffic and pedestrians. The view from the bridge over Porto is impressive ! So remember to cross the bridge at least once during your trip!

Porto boat tours

Ponte Infante Dom Henrique

When sailing inland, Ponte Infante Dom Henrique is the first bridge after the Ponte Luis Bridge. It’s the youngest bridge of the six and opened in 2003. The total length is 371 meters and is used by cars and pedestrians.

Adão da Fonseca designed Ponte Infante Dom Henrique , and the bridge has one of the shallowest arches in the world.

Ponte de Dona Maria Pia

When you see Ponte Maria Pia, it might remind you of the Ponte Luis Bridge. Maria Pia Bridge was built in 1887 and was designed by Téophile Seyrig as an iron railway bridge. It’s the oldest of six bridges and is 353 meters long.

It is no longer used by trains, as the railroad moved to the São João Bridge. Instead of demolishing the bridge, it remains a stunning national monument in Porto!

Bridges in Porto

Ponte de São João

Portuguese architect Edgar Cardoso designed Ponte de São João. As mentioned, it is now used as the new railway bridge . Ponte de São João is 66 meters high and 250 meters long.

Ponte do Freixo

Ponte do Freixo is, with 705 meters, the longest of the six bridges. The road bridge has eight lanes and opened in 1995. Ponte do António Reis and Daniel de Sousa designed Freixo, and the bridge has a sleek design.

Porto boat tours 11

Ponte da Arrábida

The bridge  closest to the Atlantic Ocean  is Ponte da Arrábida. It’s another design by Edgar Cardoso, and it opened in 1963. Back then,  it had the longest arch (270 meters)  of any concrete bridge in the world!

The bridge is 70 meters tall , and it’s a road bridge with six lanes. It’s the last bridge to see during your cruise in Porto. The river cruise returns to the city centre, where you can enjoy a wine tasting afterwards, for example!

Bridges in Porto

Other things to see during the boat tour

During the boat tours on the Douro River, you´ll discover more than the 6 bridges. The Bridges tour passes many historic buildings at Cais da Ribeira, and your tour guide will tell you many stories about the city.

This is the oldest part of Porto, and on the south side of the river, you´ll see the monastery Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar .

6 bridges cruise Porto

During the boat tour, you’ll cruise along the  Museu Nacional da Imprensa, Jornais e Artes Gráficas, the Press Museum in Porto, as well as many former factories, such as the Massarelos Crockery Factory.

From the river, you can also spot the Tram Museum, the garden Torreão do Jardim do Palácio and the church Igreja de São Francisco. Closer to the sea, you’ll discover the nature reserve Douro Estuary and Foz do Douro.

Where do the Porto boat tours depart from?

A boat tour can depart from both sides of the Douro River . If you stay in Porto, you can start the river cruise at the quay at Ribeira . The boat tour also begins on the south side of the river, at Vila Nova de Gaia .

Porto boat tours 29

Porto boat tours departure time

Other river tours on the Douro River

If you have time to venture out of Porto , it’s well worth discovering the Douro Valley! Organised tours depart daily from the city, often including a cruise on the Douro River.

The Douro Valley is filled with vineyards , and it’s where the famous Port wine comes from. Many tourists like staying at the Douro Valley for a night or two , and there are some fantastic hotels. You can even sleep in a wine barrel !

Other not to miss sights in Porto

If you don’t have time for an excursion to the Douro Valley, you can still enjoy a trip to a Port wine cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia . Discover the World of Wine at WOW Porto and visit one of the six museums inside! If you want to visit a Port wine cellar, check out Sandeman, Caves Cálem or Graham’s Port Lodge .

It’s a fantastic experience to learn more about Port wine, and of course, you’ll get to taste it, too! It is also great to make a trip with the Gaia cable car on this side of the river. There are some wonderful places to eat, and from Jardim do Morro , you’ll see one of the best sunsets you’ve witnessed in your life!

Miradouros Porto

Of course, there are many other sights to see in Porto. Some highlights are  Bolsa Palace , the Sé Cathedral , and the Clérigos Tower . Lello Bookstore has a long queue, but the interior will blow your mind! You can also discover the many viewpoints in Porto and enjoy the views of the Douro River from above.

Visit Mercado Bom Sucesso for a tasty food experience, or try the local dish Francesinha ! Art lovers will have a great time at Parque de Serralves , where you’ll find gardens and stunning buildings. Or discover the beautiful azulejo tiles at the Chapel of Souls and Igreja do Carmo.

Palácio da Bolsa

Hotels in Porto with a bridge view

After a 6 bridges cruise, you might want to enjoy more bridge views during your trip to Porto. Thankfully, the city has many hotels and accommodations with a view of the Ponte Dom Luis Bridge! In both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, there is a wide selection available .

My kiddo would absolutely love the 6 bridges cruise. We really need to plan a trip to Porto. Thanks for the inspiration!

Anytime Yvonne! Have a great trip together 🙂

That was a great article! Porto is on my to-visit list!

Thank you, Simina 🙂 I hope you get to visit soon!

Porto looks beautiful, I especially liked Pátio das Nações! Thanks for the inspirations 🙂

Anytime Jaqueline. Happy to hear you had a great time!

Porto is a beautiful city. When we visited a few years ago we didn’t get around to doing a river cruise and see all 6 bridges. So that’s a good one for when we return to Porto.

There is so much to see and do as well 🙂 There is always a next time!

I love that there are so many different options + that’s awesome that a lot of the prices are so affordable! Watching the sunset there would be magical. :]

Yes, it´s really affordable, and even the private tours are great for small groups. I´d go again in a heart beat!

Seeing Porto and the Douro by boat is a great idea. Knowing it’s the third longest river after the Tagus and Ebro on the Iberian Peninsula is good bit of trivia to keep locked away too.

Now I hope you get this Trivia question soon! 🙂

Thank you so much for all of the amazing info! Would love to go to Portugal one day!

I hope you get to visit sometime!

We did the 6 Bridges Cruise when we were in Porto. It was great to see the city from the water. But it would have been lovely to do a boat cruise for sunset on a sailboat. We drove up along the Douro River but one day would like to return to cruise it.

The sailing tours are great, too! I´ve done 3 in the last 2 years and can´t get enough 🙂

It’s always nice to see and experience a city from its waterways and the boat tour seems like one such experience.

Maybe you get to do it next time in Porto! Have fun 🙂

Thank you so much for the most helpful information on Fado & boat cruises.

I only have one day in Lisbon (Sunday 11/19) and would love to enjoy a FADO concert. Unfortunately, we are in port from 8am and I must be on board around 3:00. I looked through all the FADO venues that you mentioned & all are in the evening. If there are any Sunday afternoon concerts, I’d love to go. Any suggestion on how to find one? Thanks so much, Cari

Hi, unfortunately many of the FADO concerts are indeed in the evening, however you can always visit the FADO museum in Alfama, or you can just walk around the neighbourhood of Alfama, you’ll probably end up hearing it in the streets. Have you read my articles about FADO ( https://nowinportugal.com/the-best-fado-in-lisbon/ ) and Alfama ( https://nowinportugal.com/alfama-neighbourhood-guide/ ).

6 Bridges Douro River Day Cruise + Best Porto Boat Tours (2024)

Are you ready to enjoy a 6 Bridges Douro River Day Cruise on one of the best Porto boat tours?

The 6 Bridges Cruise is one of the best things to do in Porto, and for a good reason. Hop onboard replica Rabelo boats to experience part of the path that former wine merchants would take when bringing barrels of Port wine from Douro Valley to Vila Nova de Gaia. Or go for a more private experience on a yacht or sailboat.

Escape the city and relax while enjoying the river’s calm waters and seeing this adorable riverside town from the water. I’ve done the six bridges tour in Porto and will share with you if the 6 Bridges cruise is worth it, how long the day river cruise is, and the best Porto boat tours.

Table of Contents

What are the 6 Bridges in Porto?

There are a total of six bridges in Porto:

  • Ponte Dom Luis I

Ponte do Infante

Ponte de dona maria pia, ponte de são joão bridge, ponte de freixo, ponte da arrábida.

This list is the order in which you will see them during your river cruise. Each bridge is distinct from the next, having been built over multiple years, using a variety of architectural styles. Below is information about each of the six bridges in Porto.

dom-luis-I-bridge-porto

Ponte Dom Luis I

Ponte Dom Luis I connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia and is the most famous bridge in Porto . When you see a picture of Porto with a bridge, it is almost always Ponte Dom Luis I.

A double-decker iron arch bridge, the bridge takes its influence from Paris’s Eiffel Tower . The bridge opened in 1886, designed for automobile and pedestrian usage.

Today, the upper level of the bridge is for the metro and pedestrians, and the lower level is for pedestrians and cars. I walked across the upper and lower parts of the bridge. I recommend experiencing the bridge from both the upper and lower decks.

Ponte-do-Infante-porto

Ponte do Infante is the newest bridge in Porto , built in 2003. This upper-deck road bridge, Ponte do Infante, was built to replace the upper deck of Ponte Dom Luis and is used for automobile traffic.

maria-pia-bridge-porto

Ponte de Dona Maria Pia is the oldest bridge that connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, built in 1877. Its identity is often confused with Ponte Dom Luis I due to their similar shape, but they are each different.

Ponte de Dona Maria Pia is a wrought-iron single-deck arch bridge built for railway traffic. Today, the bridge is no longer used and is a landmark.

Sao-Joao-bridge-porto

Ponte de São João Bridge is the futuristic looking bridge of Porto . This concrete bridge was built in 1991 for railway traffic to replace Ponte de Dona Maria Pia. Rail could travel faster on this bridge, so that was appealing. Its futuristic design allows for faster rail travel over the bridge than Maria Pia could provide.

Ponte de Freixo is the most remote and interior bridge in Porto. Built in 1995, the bridge is another road bridge for automobiles to get between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Ponte de Freixo is double-wide, allowing for road traffic to cross from both directions simultaneously.

Ponte da Arrábida bridge porto

Ponte da Arrábida is the widest of the six bridges in Porto, being 87 ft wide. Opening in 1963, Ponte da Arrábida contains six lanes of traffic plus two pedestrian lanes.

Upon its completion, it had the largest span of any concrete arch bridge in the world. In 2011, Ponte da Arrábida was noted as a National Monument.

Is the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise Worth it?

If you enjoy river cruises and a quick getaway from the city, a 1 hour Douro River cruise is worth it .

Is the Douro a little touristy? Absolutely. But I would counter that a river cruise is one of the best ways to experience the riverfront and see the city of Porto from a different perspective.

Porto is known as the city of bridges , so you won’t want to miss this activity on your Porto itinerary . I recommend everyone take the short Porto river cruise at least once, especially if it’s your first time visiting Porto.

“This boat ride was incredible! Great views, a great tour, and super hospitable guides! They were very friendly and welcoming right from the start, introducing themselves and making us feel very comfortable, they answered all of our questions and shared some very interesting information about the sights we were seeing and about Porto in general. They clearly love their city and love to share that with people! They even gave us a few glasses of “green wine” and let us try a red porto. On top of all of that they also recommended other places to visit in the city as well as great local places to eat dinner (he even made the reservation for us!). “Our 10 night river cruise and excursions were great. But the very last day I arranged a private tour with eco tours in Porto Portugal. Absolutely wonderful and far better than the excursions offered on the ship. My mom is 86 and has mobility issues so private tours are life saving for our family. Daniela was our tour guide and he went far and above our expectations in ensuring my mom was able to see everything and experience hard to get to places like the Churchill wine tasting room. He literally backed up an extremely narrow cobblestone road inches from hitting cars and side of building to bring my mom up to the front door. During the tour, he made sure the tour guide carried a chair around for my mom to sit on as well. He was extremely knowledgeable and spoke English very well and was loud enough for all of us to hear in the very luxurious van. Bravo eco Tours! Highly recommend!” – TripAdvisor Travler ( see more reviews )

“Wow I cannot share how great of an experience my partner and I had. We were skeptical of the price as it seemed to good to be true, so we signed up and arrived early, and was ensured we were all set to go for our 3pm boat tour. We hung out at the nearby cafe until Ines came to retrieve us to start our boat ride. To our surprise, we had the whole boat to ourselves! Andrés and Ines showed us around the river and were very friendly and knowledgeable of the history of Porto. They then brought out various different wines to taste and paired them with delicioso chocolates. We had some great conversations and they even recommended some local restaurants for dinner. On the way back to dock, we were greeted with a beautiful sunset sky and docked at 5pm. Such a lovely experience, would recommend to anyone visiting Porto with a loved one or group of friends. The 6 Bridges Douro River Day Cruise in Porto: What It’s Like

After scootering around Lagos and parasailing in Albufeira on Portugal’s southern coast, I was ready for more adventures in this beautiful country. Arrive early to check in for your river cruise before its departure time. After checking in, you will line up to board the boat, prepared to board when the ship is ready. Choose an open seat and get ready to sail.

Depending on the tour you choose, there may be an audio part of the tour explaining the history of the six bridges. My river cruise did not include an audio tour.

Once the boat sails, relax and feel the wind in your hair. Both sides of the boat offer a great view, as whatever you can’t see well on one side, you will see again on the return trip. I loved seeing each of Porto’s six bridges and enjoying sitting down after a long day of sightseeing.

Seeing Porto from the water is charming and well worth the ticket price. If I didn’t take the river cruise, I wouldn’t have seen half of the bridges in this adorable town. I recommend the 6 bridges cruise as part of your Porto itinerary.

porto sunset

Tips for the Best Experience with Your Porto River Day Cruise

  • Plan your river cruise close to sunset if you plan to watch the sunset from Porto’s waterfront area. Porto is known for their incredible sunsets, so you will want to plan where you will be to watch it. We took our cruise around 5 pm, then stayed in the waterfront district until the sun had set.
  • During the cruise, you cannot sit at the front of the boat as your seat , but you can take a photo with the view.
  • If you sit on the left outer edge of the boat, be prepared to be splashed. During my tour, we got splashed, but the rest of the ship stayed dry. It wasn’t a big deal for us, but other people moved after that. Something to note when choosing where to sit during your ride.
  • Book a ticket in advance to ensure your spot. If you don’t know your schedule, buy your ticket for the same day, but be prepared that not all time options may be available. I bought my tickets on the same day and had to pick a time slightly later than I intended but it worked out.
  • Tie up your hair unless you are okay with it tangling in the wind.

5-Star Reviews From Our Happy Guests

Had a great experience with João and Fábio on our recent trip to Carvoeiro. We did the hour tour (the perfect amount of time) parting from the village center and cruised along the coast seeing beautiful cliffs and caves. João was a nice, friendly and knowledgeable guide while Fábio was a very skilled and fun boat captain. These caves are amazing- we even saw a fossilized starfish and I even found a “new” one they haven’t seen before! You can’t skip this!! It’s a must when visiting the South of Portugal! I was in the region a few years ago and I’m mind blown I missed all of this until this time time around. Highly recommended!!

My mate and I did the 90 minute boat trip which I think was 25 Euros each. It was a fantastic boat trip with the amazing Carlos & Bruno who seem to be able to speak every language in Europe fluently. I’m not sure if I was more impressed with the caves or their linguistic skills. Their boat handling was superb too. The caves were fantastic especially the speed they enter into the caves on the boat. It was just a brilliant trip. If you’re in Carvoeiro this is a must.

Today we did the Carvoeiro caves tour. We’ve done this for the last 3 years of coming to Carvoeiro and today’s trip was the best. Made very enjoyable by our 2 guides. (Miguel & Bruno Mars) They even took photos for us On there personal mobile and emailed them to us as we had left our phones in the hotel room. 5* trip.

Loved every cave and the tours explanation for every name given by old sailors. They were very nice and it was worth every penny!

Most tours only last an hour or so and make for a great, easy addition to your day in Porto.

How many days do you need to see Porto?

To really see Porto, you need at least two days, but preferably three.

Best boat tours in Lagos

Note that most of the boat tours in Lagos Portugal do not allow pets on board and are not suitable for anyone with mobility impairment. If this is your case, make sure you ask directly to the tour provider upfront if they can accommodate you.

Boat trips in Lagos Portugal might be canceled due to weather conditions, especially outside the summer season. The Atlantic Ocean can get quite furious on windy days, so in that case, they must postpone the tour to a day with calmer waters.

Further, the sun is always extra strong as it reflects in the water when you’re on the boat, so be prepared with protection.

On windy and overcast days, especially in the winter in Algarve , make sure you bring a windbreaker as it can get cold on the boat. Yet, Lagos in winter can be warm, so you’ll need sunscreen nonetheless.

Here are the absolute musts you should take with you when going on a boat cruise in Lagos:

  • water (if not provided on the boat)
  • snacks or a soft drink (something to keep your blood sugar levels happy in the heat)

1. From Lagos: Boat Cruise to Ponta da Piedade

What’s included in the boat tour:

What’s not included in the boat tour:

  • food and drinks
  • swimming stops
An epic small boat tour from Lagos with a lovely guide and spectacular scenery!

This is a great small group boat ride in Lagos to the spectacular Ponta da Piedade rock formations in the western Algarve. Taking you along the rugged coastline past secluded beaches like Dona Ana Beach and Camilo Beach as well as smaller and lesser-known spots.

There are multiple hidden sea caves and rock formations to discover and the guide will give you inside information along the way.

I especially love the part closing up to Ponta da Piedade where your guide will point out several rock formations that fishermen have named throughout the years, like the “The kissing couple” and “The elephant”.

Ponta da Piedade boasts 20-meter-tall rock formations, natural arches, and grottoes over glittering clear water and this is one of the highest-rated boat tours Lagos has to offer to this gem.

One of the things I like the most about this boat trip in Lagos is that they take a maximum of 9 people on the boat. This means that even in the busy summer months, you get an intimate experience and can easily connect with the guide and other passengers in a way that larger boats don’t give the opportunity to do.

But these boat tours fill up quickly, especially in the summer, so make sure you reserve your spot for your travel dates as soon as possible.

4. Lagos: Dolphin Watching with Marine Biologists

  • Marine Biologist guide
A unique and educational wildlife experience where you contribute to important research!

This is, in my opinion, the best boat tour Lagos Portugal offers for dolphin safaris because you will not only have a great chance of seeing dolphins in the wild, but you will also support the preservation and conservation work of the beautiful creatures.

With a marine biologist on board, you will learn so much valuable information about the dolphin’s behavior, how to approach animals safely, and you will get any question answered by a professional.

The marine biologist will collect data about the dolphin group’s behavior and movements for research during the trip, so you can really get hands-on with how they work.

This is a great tour to take kids that are fascinated with animals and wildlife in general, as they will learn so much when they experience the animals in their natural environment.

Though there is a big chance of spotting dolphins on the tour with a professional crew that knows where and what to look for, remember that the dolphins are wild animals and there is no guarantee to see dolphins on any dolphin safari.

I love this option of sailing with the wind on the major journey but still having the option to get close up to the towering rock formations erupting out of the water.

Learn about the different formations that have been named by fishermen for their resemblance, like “the elephant”, and uncover the hidden coves and grottoes that you can only find from the ocean.

On the way back to Lagos, you will have plenty of time to sunbathe on deck as the sailboat slowly makes its way back.

Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . Viking River Cruises also offers an intimate longship journey through the Douro.

Table wine and port wine are produced here and shipped all over the world. Spend the day exploring vineyards, crushing grapes with your feet or sampling local wines. In addition to wine tasting , visitors can take a river cruise on the Douro River, go hiking and visit a natural park. Plus, be sure to explore the valley’s villages. Read about these activities, and more, with our roundup of the 6 best things to do in Douro Valley Portugal.

1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from Pinhão or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

Travel Train

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit Pinhão train station, built in 1937. Pinhão is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in Pinhão. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

A self drive to Portugal's North and Center

Starting in fascinating Lisbon, this trip allows you to discover Portugal both on your own as well as with guided tours. Driving further up north you'll explore Coimbra and Porto before heading to the Douro Valley and Alentejo.

October can be a good time to visit for those who want to wander the town as the weather starts to hint at autumn's arrival. The weather during this time tends to be for the most part mild in comparison to the intense heat of summer.

October sits right in the middle of the shoulder season in Albufeira which means you can expect fewer tourists crowding the attractions and beaches. Plus, you can snag accommodation at more wallet-friendly prices.

While there's still some sunshine to soak up, be prepared for occasional showers that have an opportunity to put a damper on outdoor plans. The chances of rain increase compared to the summer months — on average, Albufeira sees about 56mm in October, adding to the lush green scenery of the area.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that some businesses might start winding down their operations for the season, so plan your activities accordingly.

As for swimming —yes, you can still take a dip. The sea temperature might start to cool down a bit, but it's still pleasant for a refreshing splash for some.

Overall, October can be a great time to visit Albufeira, with mild weather, fewer crowds, and budget-friendly prices. Just remember to pack an umbrella and check ahead for any seasonal closures.

As the summer season fades into autumn, Albufeira experiences mild and pleasant weather. Daytime highs drop to around 23°C (73°F), perfect for soaking up the sun or exploring the city. When night rolls around, temperatures cool further to about 15-16°C (59-61°F), so it's a good idea to have a light jacket handy if you're out after dark.

The sea in October remains relatively warm, with temperatures around 21°C (70°F). It might not be as toasty as in the peak summer months, but it's still pleasant for a dip or water activities.

Rainfall chances decrease compared to the winter, so you're less likely to get caught in a shower during your outdoor adventures.

October is considered shoulder season, so you'll find fewer tourists compared to July and August. This means beaches and attractions will be less crowded, making it a bit easier to enjoy.

Prices for hotels and rentals are generally lower than the peak summer months, but they can still vary depending on the exact location and type of accommodation. Many tours and activities are still available in October, and you might find some end-of-season discounts.

One benefit of visiting Albufeira in October is the pleasant weather, with warm temperatures still lingering and plenty of sunshine. October can still be great for beach days , though it might be a bit cooler for sunbathing compared to the peak summer months. As the month progresses, there may be more variability in weather, with occasional rain showers and cooler evenings.

If you don’t mind crowds and want a guaranteed sunny beach holiday, the months of July and August are great. Though more crowded, these months are popular for a reason.
