The 555-mile road trip from Chicago to the Niagara Falls crosses 5 states and loops around 2 of the 5 Great Lakes. The drive will take 8 hours 30 minutes before stops but you will want to spread it over 2 to 3 days to make the most of your journey.

The journey from Chicago to Niagara Falls is one that can be made in a single day if you so choose, but doing so would have you miss out on so many amazing sights and experiences along the way that it would almost seem pointless to do it as a road trip.

The fastest and shortest option when traveling between Chicago and Niagara Falls is a 530-mile route via Detroit and cutting through Canada, which takes around 8 hours to complete.

Taking just a little longer will allow you to have more interesting stops along the way and a more scenic route from Chicago to Niagara Falls. That's why the suggested route below is just a shade longer, at 555 miles and 8 hours and 30 minutes of driving.

You will want to take time to explore the countryside and cities you'll be passing through along the way so I would strongly recommend taking a few days to make the drive with stops along the way.

Best road trip route from Chicago to Niagara Falls

Beginning in Illinois, our journey will take us through Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, before we arrive at our destination in upstate New York.

This route is certainly long and exciting and will have a lot to see and do along the way but the one thing it most definitely is not is complicated.

The I-90 that you'll follow out of Chicago and around the southern tip of Lake Michigan will take you almost the entire way - some 530 miles east towards Buffalo, New York. From Buffalo it's a simple matter of jumping on the I-190 for the very short final stretch north to Niagara Falls.

Best places to stop between Chicago and Niagara Falls

There are a lot of great places you can stop over on your way around the Great Lakes from Chicago to Niagara Falls and it can be tough to choose the best options for breaking up your journey.

Here are some ideas for places you can stop for the night on your long road trip.

Overnight stay in Cleveland, Ohio

The first stop suggestion is over halfway along the route, some 340 miles east of Chicago in the city of Cleveland, Ohio.

The 15th largest city in the US, Cleveland's greatest selling point is its fantastic views, as it lies on the banks of Lake Erie.

Home to numerous museums, a botanical garden and even the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, there's plenty to do to keep you occupied in the city.

If you'd rather keep the journey more focused on nature, then you've also got the options of a boat trip out onto Lake Erie or Cuyahoga Valley National Park just a little over 20 minutes from the city.

Cuyahoga Valley covers 51 square miles, where you can stroll in the rolling hills and sprawling forests, which are home to deer, beavers, foxes and an incredible 250 species of bird, including the legendary bald eagle.

If you decide to stop over in the city, Hilton Cleveland Downtown is a great place to relax after a long day of driving.

The luxurious 4-star hotel with an onsite restaurant, rooftop bar and spectacular views of Lake Erie has rooms with soaking tubs and although parking is a tad expensive at $30 for self park, it saves you the trouble of finding where to dump your car.

An Erie feeling to help you unwind

The next good stop is just over 100 miles northeast of Cleveland, in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The 4th largest city in the state, Erie lies on the banks of the lake after which it was named and will leave you around 118 miles (2 hours) from Niagara Falls.

It's standing as the state's 4th largest city can be deceiving, as this is a friendly, chilled out place, where you can take a minute to enjoy the local sights and sounds.

Some of the main attractions include Presque Isle State Park right on the waterfront and Lake Erie Beach around an hour's drive outside the city.

It's also the port for the legendary flagship Niagara, which fought in The Battle Of Lake Erie during the War Of 1812. Considering we're on our way to Niagara Falls, it only seems right to stop and check out its namesake.

The Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel stands right by the water and features spectacular views out across the great lake. Perhaps the only thing better than its views are its luxurious rooms and facilities, which will leave you wanting much more than just a single night here.

From Chi-Town to C-Town

The second largest city in the state of New York, much like Erie that doesn't tell the whole story, as Buffalo's 255,000 population is only a fraction of that of New York City.

A location often overlooked and considered merely a means of getting to Niagara Falls, the city of Buffalo has plenty to offer in its own right.

To carry on our watery theme why not pay a visit to the world's oldest fireboat, the Edward M. Cotter? Or how about a trip to one of the city's 50 art galleries, its science museum, or the 3rd oldest zoo in the entire United States?

Being located only 30 miles from the falls themselves, it's also the perfect location to stay when you make your visit, to save you from having to take all your luggage with you and have more to do and see in the evenings.

The stunning 4-star Buffalo Marriott at LECOM HARBORCENTER hotel is located right on the waterfront and features stylish rooms, bars and restaurants .

The hotel is a few blocks away from Downtown, but you benefit from a huge (and very well priced) car park right next to it which is a mighty useful feature for a road trip.

Beware that the hotel is part of a complex that includes the KeyBank Center - home to NHL's Buffalo Sabres. On nights when the Sabres are playing, you may find it'll take you a little while to park up and get a room, but that's about the only downside.

• Lake Michigan - The first part of your journey will take you around the southern point of Lake Michigan, the second largest of the Great Lakes and the only one located entirely in the United States.
• Indiana Dunes National Park - The 2nd most recent addition to the register of national parks, Indiana Dunes features almost 25 miles of sand dunes, rolling along the shores of south-eastern Lake Michigan.
• Harbor Country, Michigan - a little detour off the route, this very rural part of Michigan has stunning little towns with harbors, wineries and a relaxed country vibe.
• Toledo, Ohio - The 4th largest city in Ohio, Toledo is famed for its history of jazz music and has museums, galleries and bars dedicated to it.
• Lake Erie - With a surface area of 9,910 miles, Lake Erie may be the second smallest of the Great Lakes but it is still quite a sight to behold.

Best time to go on a road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls

The road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls will take you through parts of the country particularly known for their harsh winters.

Considering this is a trip where most of the attractions are located outdoors, it's therefore better to take it during the warmer months. Throughout winter many of the state parks will have limited access, you certainly won't want to spend any time on the beach and even the falls themselves can be less accessible.

When I visited in February, for example, their base had iced over. While it was certainly a sight to behold, if this is a one-off trip you don't want to miss the chance to experience a boat ride right out to the base of this legendary location.

For the most complete experience, consider making the journey between when the temperatures have started to rise in early May to the beginning of fall in September.

Ontario's Niagara Horseshoe Falls

Niagara Parkway: Buffalo, New York to Toronto, Ontario

Just across the border from Buffalo, New York, lies the city of Niagara Falls , best known for being the home of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. For those looking to extend their trip, travel along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which will take you from Niagara to downtown Toronto in 90 minutes (if traffic is flowing smoothly).

Where to stop:  Follow the Niagara parkway to the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you'll spot preserved 19th-century colonial architecture. The Niagara region is also known for having dozens of wineries on the Niagara Wine Trail , and some are as close as 10 minutes to the border.

Where to eat:  The family-run  Ravine Vineyard Estate  has an on-site restaurant and general store-style gift shop offering a la carte selections, and pantry picnic essentials to stock up on between wine tastings.   

Where to stay:  Charming Niagara-on-the-Lake has several landmark properties like the  Harbour House Hotel and Prince of Wales Hotel . If your road trip takes you to Toronto, continue your trip back in time by staying at One King West Hotel & Residence , inside Toronto’s original Dominion Bank skyscraper, which dates back to 1914. 

Lake Louise, Banff

Icefields Parkway: Montana to Banff National Park, Alberta

The quickest way from the American border to Banff National Park in Alberta is to drive through British Columbia. From northern Montana, head north on the BC-93 highway driving through the small towns along the way. The Icefields Parkway links Lake Louise in Banff National Park to Jasper National Park , and whirls drivers through the Rocky Mountains, beside glacier-like icefields and along the Continental Divide. 

Where to stop:  On your way to Banff National Park you'll pass though several mountain towns brimming with outdoor activities, like skiing and waterfalls to visit; Cranbrook, Fernie, and Kimberly are all just off the BC-93 and worth pulling over for. Stop by the village of Radium Hot Springs , which is open to visitors year-round, for a dip in the Lussier Natural Hot Springs, or one of their thermal pools.  

Where to eat:  During your drive on the Icefields Parkway, dine beside the Columbia Ice Field at the  Glacier View Lodge . From the on-site Altitude Restaurant you’ll have spectacular dinner views of the mountains, or you can visit the more-casual Chalet for lunch fare. 

Where to stay:  Known as the “Castle in the Rockies,” the Fairmont Banff Springs was built as one of the original Canadian Pacific Railway hotels in 1886. Today, Fairmont also operates other historic properties in the region that include the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge .

Fundy Coastal Trail: Maine to Saint John, New Brunswick

Explore New Brunswick's 286-mile drive along the Bay of Fundy coastline to see the world’s highest tides up-close. Depending on the time of day, you can marvel at the tides two ways: by kayaking on the water when it's at its peak, or by walking on the sprawling ocean floor when the waves have recessed. The Bay of Fundy can be seen from Saint John to Moncton, or plan a visit to the otherworldly Hopewell Rocks , which were formed by tidal erosions and stand alone when the tide goes out.

Where to stop:  St. Andrews by the sea is the midway point between Maine and the Bay of Fundy. For a short visit, wander down the town's main strip and along its historic pier; if you have some more time, wander through the 27-acre  Kingsbrae Garden  or play 18 holes at the award-winning  Algonquin Golf Course . 

Where to eat:  Dine at the  Saint John City Market , where you'll find locally caught seafood and other seasonal goods. For a sit-down meal, stop by  Bigtide Brewing Company  for craft beer and pub fare. 

Where to stay:  In downtown Saint John, the  Delta Hotel by Marriott Saint John  is conveniently within walking distance to the city’s best attractions and its famed  reversing falls , which appear to swirl backwards into the Bay of Fundy. For the resort experience, book a night at  The Algonquin in St. Andrews  by the sea.

Sea to Sky Highway: Washington State to Whistler, British Columbia

You can drive from the edge of Washington state to the mountains in Whistler in just over two hours, cutting through vibrant Vancouver along the way. The Sea-to-Sky Highway, also known as the BC-99, connects North Vancouver to Whistler on a picturesque coastal drive where the mountain and the water meet. Where to stop: To break up your drive, stop in Squamish at the Sea to Sky Gondola to get an aerial view of the region. If time permits, enhance your visit with a free guided tour to learn about the history of the land on the Spirit Trail .  Where to eat: Head to the Nicklaus North Golf Course to try and snag a spot on the patio at Table Nineteen for scenic views of Green Lake, and the descending floatplanes flying in from Vancouver.  Where to stay: Book a few nights in Whistler to explore this bustling mountain town. Autoroute 73: Maine to Quebec City, Quebec

While several of the New England states border Québec, the capital city of Québec City is in the Eastern part of the province, closest to Maine. This Francophone city feels more like Europe than other areas of Canada, with narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. Continue your road trip along the St. Lawrence River to scenic Baie-Saint Paul in Charlevoix for country walks, cheese shops, and the Galerie d'art Iris .  Where to stop: Mark the Montmorency Falls on your map for a quick stop just outside of Québec City, on your way to Charlevoix. The magnificent falls tower 99 feet higher than Niagara Falls and adventurous travelers can explore them by cable car, a suspended bridge , or zip-line. Where to eat: Stop by the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac for an afternoon tea at the castle, or dine onsite at Champlain Restaurant or Sam Bistro.  Where to stay: Auberge Saint-Antoine in the Old Port of Quebec City is a Relais & Châteaux that has preserved relics from the archeological dig within the property. In Baie-Saint Paul, the Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix blends a peaceful escape in a charming town with sophisticated amenities and an onsite Spa Nordique Le Germain.

The Southwest Nova Scotia Route: Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

When the  CAT ferry  that travels between Bar Harbor, Maine , and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, resumes in spring 2022, you can get from coast to coast on this high-speed catamaran in just over three hours. RVs, pickups, SUVs, cars, tour buses, motorcycles, and bicycles are welcome aboard—making this the best way for road trippers to cross the Atlantic Ocean into Canada. Once in Nova Scotia, drive along the jaw-dropping coastline along the 101 to Halifax, and back down the 103 to the ferry in Yarmouth.

Where to stop:  Plan to make several stops during your road trip, in the small coastal towns of Digby, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay. After Halifax, head to Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse to visit one of the most recognizable sites in Canada.

Where to eat:  A trip to Nova Scotia isn’t complete with indulging in fresh seafood. Swing by one of the stalls at  Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market , or grab a lobster roll along the water’s edge in one of the small towns that you visit along the way. 

Where to stay:  Break up your drive by staying a night or two in downtown Halifax. For a touch of history, book your stay at the  Lord Nelson Hotel and Suites  by the Halifax Public Gardens. For a contemporary option, check out  Muir, Autograph Collection Hotel –slated to open in fall 2021 .

Emerald Lake, South Klondike Highway

Alaska-Canadian Highway: Alaska to Haines Junction, Yukon

The 1390-mile route along the Alaska-Canadian Highway takes you through the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to British Columbia, and then into Alaska and the Yukon. For a shorter jaunt, take just the northern leg along the St. Elias Mountains and Kluane National Park and Reserve, traveling north from Alaska through Haines Junction. Where to stop: At the Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Centre , you can pick up hiking maps, register for backcountry camping, and learn more about Kluane National Park and Reserve. During the spring and fall, Dall Sheep can often be seen nearby. This national park is home to Canada’s highest mountain, Mt. Logan, the largest non-polar ice fields on the planet, and is part of one the largest internationally protected areas connected to Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park in Alaska.

Where to eat: There are several dining options in Haines Junction, but due to the secluded nature of this region you’ll want to pack a few snacks in a bear-proof container to bring on your drive. Rely on on-site dining options during your hotel stay, and healthy breakfasts and hearty family-style dinners at the Mount Logan EcoLodge .  Where to stay: The  Mount Logan EcoLodge  is a rustic escape tucked within the mountains, in a prime location for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis during the winter months. 

Yellowhead Highway #16

Yellowhead Highway: North Dakota to Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Yellowhead Highway runs through the Canadian Prairie from Winnipeg, Manitoba, through Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Edmonton, Alberta. From the North Dakota border, drive up to Winnipeg for an overnight stay before continuing west toward  Riding Mountain National Park . 

Where to stop:  Spend a day or two in Winnipeg to explore the city. During your visit, see the Inuit art museum  Qaumajuq , in the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights , and  Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Journey to Churchill exhibit .

Red Coat Trail Saskatchewan Badlands: Montana to Saskatchewan

The historic Red Coat Trail along Highway 13 stretches through the Prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Explore the midway section of the route in Saskatchewan, a short drive away from the Montana-Saskatchewan border. For the closest crossing to Grasslands National Park , head north along the 191 in Montana crossing the border in Morgan. Where to stop: Visit the wide-open plains of Grasslands National Park on your way from the U.S.-Canada border toward Highway 13. This national park is one of the largest Dark Sky Preserves in Canada, making it the perfect place to stargaze during your overnight stay.  Where to eat: Stop by  Harvest Eatery  in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, located along the Red Coat Trail. A go to site is the Royal Botanical Gardens , 400 acres of pure greenery, guaranteed to mesmerize you from its beauty. Also, check out the Burlington Waterfront Trail to get a spectacular view of the lake. LaSalle Park is another site to visit if you are in a mood for serenity and quietness.

Visiting the Niagara Falls

About an hour’s drive away from Burlington, you will witness probably one of the greatest ever natural wonders of the world, the Niagara Falls , the three waterfalls straddling the border between the United States of America and Canada, hosting the most powerful waterfall and the one with the highest flow rate of all waterfalls in the whole of Northern America.

Spencer Gorge Conservation Area – Websters Falls

Hamilton, just off from Burlington, also offers you sites to watch. Spencer Gorge Conservation Area is a perfect hideout. Explore a beautiful stream with a couple of gorgeous flowing waterfalls, including the Webster’s falls.

Visitors are encouraged to park at the Tew Falls parking lot off Harvest Road, as the parking lot at Webster Falls will fill quickly and the Tew Falls parking lot has a larger parking capacity.

Visiting Dundurn Castle

Places to See in Detroit | Day 5

On the 4-hour drive to Detroit, via the route ON-401 W, you will pass through London, where you will get to check out the Madison County Historical Society Museum and the Madison Lake State Park . Once you arrive in Detroit, the largest city of Michigan, there are several interesting landmarks and attractions to visit:

• Detroit Institute of Arts , world-famous for its Murals painted by Diego Rivera
• The Guardian building , the landmark of a skyscraper
• The Fisher building , quite commonly known as the Detroit’s largest art object
• Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History , will also help to not only give you a change of perspective, but also to learn a fact or two about the African-American history.

Exploring the city of Chicago | Day 6 & 7

Leaving Detroit, you will encounter a bit of a long journey with quite a bit of sightseeing. The 3-hour journey will eventually take you all the way to Chicago. This metropolitan city has the 3 rd largest population for an American city and is filled with skyscrapers and magnificent architectures.

Driving to Chicago

Before reaching Chicago, ensure that on your way to there, you stop by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and also at Saugatuck, South Haven, places with wonderful views overlooking the breathtaking lake front.

You may also stop at the Shipshewana , the Amish country, and take part in the flea market, especially if it is a Tuesday or a Wednesday.

Things to do in Chicago

Once Chicago is reached, I would suggest you to stay there at least for a couple of days as there are a lot of things to do . This way you can cover as many of the sites as possible. Most sites are included in the Chicago City Pass which will give you great discounts if you visit several attractions.

Shedd Aquarium

Shedd Aquarium  is an indoor public aquarium in Chicago. It is home to over 32,000 animals and has over 5,000,000 US Gallons of water. It is one of the best aquariums in the world.

This public museum dedicated to the study of astronomy and astrophysics. It is home to three large theaters and space science exhibitions. Please note that tickets are available until 9:00 am on the day the of admission. Please verify that all of your event selections are on the same date.

Field Museum of Natural History  

The Field Museum of Natural History is the famous natural history museum of Chicago, and is one of the largest such museums in the world .  The Field Museum is open from 9am-5pm every day except Christmas, with last admission at 4pm. Tickets cost $38 for adults and $27 for children

Cloud Gate  

Cloud Gate  is one the world’s largest outdoor monuments. It is made of highly polished stainless steel that reflects the natural lights of the city and park. It was designed by the famous designer Anish Kapoor.

Willis Tower  

Willis tower is one the largest skyscapers in the USA. You can have an amazing view over the city by visiting the Skydeck. The Skydeck has the Ledge, a glass balcony extending four feet outside the 103rd floor of Willis Tower. About 1,353 feet above the ground! Yikes!

October through February from 10am-8pm March through September from 9am-10pm

Once ready, you may take a flight from O’Hare International Airport to fly back to to Toronto.

Or.. Like any other roadtripper would do.. Drive back! 😉

One of the most majestic drives in the US is one that goes from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Passing along two of the Great Lakes, you can’t beat the beautiful scenery and the ultimate bucket list destination. 

There are a couple of routes to consider when planning your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip. Do you want to head straight east, exploring the southern shore of Lake Erie?

Or could you consider first spending some time along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan before crossing into the land of our Canadian neighbors to the north?

If you’re not quite sure which route is best, you’re in luck. We’ve mapped out three different ways to road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago and the best places to stop along each one.

The most direct route to get from Chicago to Niagara Falls will take you through Kalamazoo and Detroit, over the Canadian border towards Hamilton, and on to Niagara Falls in just about 520 miles.

Staying Stateside, you could hug the southern edge of Lake Erie, passing through cities like Toledo, Cleveland, Erie, and Buffalo for a total of 580 miles to Niagara.

The fastest route from Chicago to Niagara Falls can be done in about eight hours. But seriously, why rush?

Hands down, the best time of year to do a Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is in the summer. The reason? It’s when you’ll have pleasant temps in the ‘80s. Making the time in the car easy to stop, stretching your legs, and enjoying everything along the way. It also means that the mist from the falls will be refreshing rather than bone-chilling like at other times of the year.

Best Stops on a Chicago to Niagara Falls Road Trip 

The first of the two Northern Routes you can take on a Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is gorgeous. You’ll hug the coast of Lake Michigan, stopping at quaint harbor towns like Saugatuck. Then it’s on to Grand Rapids and London, crossing the US/Canada border at the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these stops:

Saugatuck & Grand Rapids, MI

A great place to make a stop along this part of the trip is the beautiful beach town of Saugatuck. You’ll get there in just about three hours traveling along the shores of Lake Michigan on I-90 to I-94, then I-916. 

Here, you can stretch your legs on the beach, climb the dunes at Saugatuck Dunes State Park , or just enjoy the town’s shops and restaurants. This lovely place is definitely worth a stop on your road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago – if not a standalone family lake vacation !

Once you’ve reached Grand Rapids, the kids will love to visit the John Ball Zoo . There are so many animals to see and even ones they can pet. You’ll see some really cool things at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, including a skeleton of a Blue Whale, an antique steam engine, a planetarium, and a good ol’ carousel, making it a must-visit when visiting the city.

If your family needs a bit of outdoor time, head to Millenium Park while you’re in Grand Rapids. This fabulous place is so much more than just a park. Everyone in the family will have fun hiking and biking on the park’s trails, boating on the lake, relaxing on the beach, and cooling off in the splash pad. 

There are plenty of places to stay if you’re RVing. Check out Steamboat Park Campground or Woodchip Campground .

Leaving Grand Rapids, head east on I-69. This leg of the Chicago to Niagara Falls drive will take just about four hours and includes traveling over the US-Canada border so have your passports ready . You’ll get to see beautiful landscapes in both Michigan and Ontario on the way to your next destination, London.

For outdoor family fun in London, head to Boler Mountain. No matter the season, you’ll be in for a ton of fun, like hiking, mountain biking, tubing, rope courses, and skiing. 

Everyone in the family will love experiencing the past at the Fanshawe Pioneer Village where the past comes to life. Hours of operation vary with the season so make sure to check before heading there. London is a great area for camping and RVing. There are tons of parks to choose from, including Prospect Hill Campground and Dalewood Conservation Area .

The second northern route option for your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is slightly further to the south than the first. Instead, you’ll stop in the lovely town of St. Joseph before heading on to Ann Arbor. Crossing the border in Detroit and heading on to Hamilton before reaching Niagara Falls.

St. Joseph, MI

Just over an hour and a half from Chicago, you’ll arrive in St. Joseph. Yes, it is relatively early on the road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago. But, as one of the best beach towns in Michigan, it’s a must-stop town. Set on the banks of Lake Michigan, it’s the perfect place to spend some time before heading west toward Niagara Falls. 

Here you can enjoy the lake with the many sandy beaches like Silver Beach. With lifeguards on duty, everyone can have fun in the water. 

Definitely check out Warren Dunes State Park . Hiking up and surfing down the dunes is the best way to release energy before getting back in the car for the rest of the road trip ahead. Or, simply swim in the freshwater. If it’s a hot summer day, let the kids cool off at the Whirlpool Campus Fountain .

Ann Arbor, MI

Ann Arbor is a great stop on the road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls and just about a 2.5-hour drive from St. Joseph on I-94E.

You’ll love exploring the beautiful campus of the University of Michigan. As a town of intellectuals, there are a bunch of great places to visit in Ann Arbor, like the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum . Kids will also love going to the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum where they’re encouraged to touch everything!

If you’re taking this trip in the summer, check out the Ann Arbor Summer Art Festival (A2SAF ). There are fun things for everyone in the family. You can also paddle the Huron River or in Gallup Park for some outdoor water fun.

If you’re doing this road trip in an RV, you’ll find a bunch of nice places to park. Although they won’t be in the center of town, you’ll find great places just a short drive away, like Sun Outdoor Kensington Valley and Hell Creek Ranch Campground .

Hamilton, ON

In less than four hours of a drive from Ann Arbor on this Niagara Falls road trip, you’ll reach Hamilton. During this leg of the trip, you’ll be passing over the border i nto Canada so, have the proper ID ready . In Canada , you’ll travel on Highway 401, then the 403. 

Within the city limits, Hamilton has a bunch of its own waterfalls, like Albion Falls, Tews Falls, and Great Falls.

Families that love a good hike can hit the Bruce Trail – The oldest and longest in Canada. You’ll absolutely love exploring the beautiful landscape and waterfalls like Canterbury Falls. For a more relaxing stroll, head to Hamilton’s Bayfront Park .

Other awesome things to do in Hamilton include touring Dundurn Castle, the Battlefield House Museum, and Park National Historic Site. Or check out the Art Gallery of Hamilton , Museum of Steam and Technology .

Hamilton is only a short drive from Niagara Falls (about 40 mins), but it’s such a great place that it should be a major stop for your Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip.

To take the southern route on this Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip, you’ll head east on I-90 out of Chi-town nearly all the way to the Falls. This route will keep you in the States for the entire trip. So, you don’t need your passport. You’ll follow I-90 East nearly the entire way–Super easy!

Keeping it state-side, you’ll be passing through Indiana and into Ohio. This leg of the trip will take you just about four hours to get to Toledo.

There are tons to do in Toledo for the whole family. Get everyone out of the car and go for a hike in Maumee Bay State Park or enjoy any of the city’s Metroparks , like the brand-new Glass City Metropark.

Kids of all ages will love seeing the animals at the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium . For a real hands-on experience, consider going to the Imagination Station, where they will learn by doing (closed on Mondays).  To learn why Toledo is called Glass City, check out the art at the Toledo Museum of Art and see a glass-blowing demonstration (open Wednesday through Sunday).

On this road trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago, one of the best places to stay in Toledo is Maumee Bay State Park , especially if you’re RVing.

Cleveland, OH

From Toledo you’ll travel just over three hours on I-90E to reach Cleveland, the next stop on this road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls.

One of the best things to do in Cleveland, no matter your age or ability, is to visit the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Here you can go for a hike, take a stroll, enjoy a ride on the scenic railroad, kayak the Cuyahoga River, and bike the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The best part of it all is: entrance to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is free for everyone!

Back in the energetic city, there’s something for everyone. Kids will love the Children’s Museum of Cleveland (closed Thursdays), Great Lakes Science Museum , and Cleveland Museum of Natural History (closed Mondays). 

Make sure to spend some time on the waterfront for sports, dining, or even just a simple stroll along the water. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a must-do 

Pro-Tip: Make Cleveland your major stop on the way back to Chicago from Niagara Falls. It’s a longer drive (3.5 hours from Niagara Falls and five hours to Chicago) but totally worth it to spend a full day or two in the city.

During this epic Chicago to Niagara Falls drive, Erie is a great place to get out and experience the beauty of the Great Lakes. You’ll love relaxing on the beach, like Sands Beach in nearby Harborcreek. Or, head to Presque Isle State Park, where there are great beaches, hiking, and a lighthouse to explore. 

Other things not to miss in Erie are the Zoo (open daily), Hagen History Center (closed Mondays), ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday), and the Erie Maritime Museum (open Wednesday-Sunday).  

For one of the best views of the lake, you’ll want to hike the Erie Bluffs State Park .

Leaving Erie, jump on I-90 East again towards Buffalo.

Buffalo, NY

Now, Buffalo is literally just down the road from Niagara Falls, but it’s just a great place to spend some time that we just had to put on this itinerary as its own stop. 

There’s so much for families to do in Buffalo. Make sure to put both the Buffalo Zoo and Buffalo Museum of Science on the itinerary. The Buffalo Waterfront is the perfect place to spend some time, especially in the summer. Everyone in the family will get into the fun with things like water bikes, kayaking, roller skating and playgrounds.

When you’re ready to continue on your Niagara Falls road trip, you can opt to cross the Peace Bridge into Canada or stay stateside and head up to the falls. Either way, the drive will take about half an hour. Remember to have your documents ready for the border crossing at the Peace Bridge .

No matter which route you take to get here. Your final destination is the great Niagara Falls. On The US or Canadian side, this spectacular place has been a favorite destination for centuries. And it continues to be one of the best vacation spots for the entire family. 

There are so many ways to experience the falls. Check it out from observation decks on boat tours like the Maid of the Mist , which will get you up close to the base of the falls. 

For insane views, you can ride a zipline over the Canadian side of the falls. Or even consider going on a journey behind the falls ! Everyone in the family will absolutely love this road trip from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Making it a family trip with memories to last a lifetime. 

Pro Tip: To fully experience the falls, you’ll want to travel to see it from both the US and Canadian sides. So, remember to bring your passports to cross the Rainbow Bridge in a car or on the pedestrian walkway.

The 557 miles long road trip from Chicago to Niagara cuts through five different states while passing through two of the Great Lakes. There are a couple of routes to reach Niagara, however, attractions & pit stops may vary depending on the one you select. If you aren’t sure which one’s the best, we mapped out three different routes to reach Niagara. Furthermore, we’ve also listed down the best places to stop in between for each of these routes.

However, if you still ask me, which one’s the quickest & most direct one – then I would say the one which cuts through Kalamazoo and Detroit across the Canadian border towards Hamilton . The distance is 528 miles which roughly takes about 8hrs 22mins to reach Niagara.

Driving Times for Chicago to Niagara Falls

For the larger audience, we thought of not restricting our preference to only one specific route but others too – so that you can make a comparison for yourself as to which one’s better. Consider the below driving times for each of the routes and also take into account the places you’d be stopping by.

Northern Route I (via Grand Rapids): 551 miles, a total journey of 8hrs 24minutes. Northern Route II (via Detroit): 528 miles, a total journey of 8 hours. Southern Route I (via Toledo): 571 miles, a total journey of 9 hours.

Let’s explore the three routes below and find places worth visiting for your road trip.

Northern Route I via Grand Rapids

This particular route of our Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip is pretty scenic. As you bypass the coast of Lake Michigan, you’ll see picturesque villages and quaint towns in the most idyllic settings of Michigan state. Furthermore, the traffic on this route is comparatively lighter than the other ones mentioned below in the post.

The drive from Chicago to Grand Rapids is approximately 179 miles (2hrs 51mins) via I-94 E and I-96 N . Although it seems to be a long journey of three hours, you wouldn’t be tired of the views Lake Michigan would offer. Moreover, Grand Rapids makes a great stop to explore the state of Michigan a little deeper, as you delve into the energetic atmosphere & culture the town offers.

Grand Rapids, MI

Grand Rapids is an underrated yet well-known destination for arts, history, culture, museums and nightlife. The town is recognized for its lively, bustling atmosphere which often makes travellers come back for a second visit. And while you’re here, we do not want you to miss out on exploring its famous landmarks. Below are some of the notable ones –

1. Grand Rapids Public Museum

Grand Rapids Public Museum is one of the most fascinating museums of all time. Even as the name suggests, this museum is massive in size – with three entire floors dedicated to permanent exhibits and displays. Most of its artwork showcases the history and past timelines of Michigan through immersive content, while other exhibit focuses on topics such as culture and science.

Interestingly, that’s not all. The museum is known to house over 250,000 different artefacts on different subjects such as fossils, furniture, zoology and automobiles. Even if you want to, it’s quite impossible to go through each of them in a single day. And that’s what makes Grand Rapids Public Museum a unique must-visit place.

2. Grand Rapids Art Museum

If you’re an art admirer, then you surely can’t miss visiting Grand Rapids Art Museum . This LEED Gold Certified green building houses a diverse collection of 19th- and 20th-century prints, artwork, paintings, and sculptures. There are over more than 6,000 pieces of decorative art and modern art and design. With its growing collection of displays, the museum is also known for its weekend live exhibits which are entertaining for all families traveling with children.

3. Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park

Well, along with all the museums, Grand Rapids is also known for its exciting recreational spaces and parks. One of them is Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park which offers a tranquillity of peace and calm every time you visit. It’s one of my favourite places to explore and definitely a must-visit one in Grand Rapids.

Spread over 158 acres of land, Frederik Meijer Gardens houses some of the most intriguing sculptures and objects. In addition to it, the main area contains five themed indoor gardens and a waterfall. There are also other themed outdoor parks which display beautiful flowers and varietal plant species.

Lansing, MI

Only an hour’s drive from Grand Rapids, Lansing makes a perfect destination for weekend trippers to enjoy museums, sports and local attractions. And well, you certainly can’t miss its trendy restaurants that proudly boast Mchigian’s favourite eateries and snacks.

1. Explore Public Art and Murals

Lansing is an important cultural hub that houses many unique galleries. One of the best ways to explore them is to take a guided or self-exploratory walk across Lansing’s four art districts. From Downtown Lansing to Old Town, the neighbourhood hosts a vibrant mix of exciting sculptures and objects. Furthermore, the historic buildings based in this area are perfectly adorned with contemporary murals.

2. Walk the Lansing River Trail

If you’re an outdoorsy person just like me, then I highly recommend taking the Lansing River Trail . Set amidst the urban and industrial area of Lansing, this river trail runs 16 mile-long from Michigan State University to Potter Park Zoo. You can either walk, trek or bike the entire stretch and grope in some of the scenic spots of this town.

The last stop of this stretch before reaching Niagara Falls in London, Ohio. About two hours drive from Lansing which also includes the US-Canada border crossing – you’ll get to see a blend of landscape diversity from both countries.

1. Boler Mountain

One of the key attractions of London, OH is Boler Mountain , which is a ski resort located in the southwestern region of Ontario. The place absolutely drives a crazy amount of tourists during the peak season. With skiing, snowboarding and treetop adventure parks, Boler Mountain is easily one of the must-visit places for our Chicago to Niagara Falls road trip.

Northern Route II via Detroit

Compared to other routes, this one via Detroit is the most convenient & direct one. Ideally, weekend trippers from Chicago usually prefer this route to travel towards Niagara Falls. Furthermore, the local towns of St Joseph, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo make a perfect pit stop to break your long journey.

Kalamazoo, MI

Located in the state of Michigan, Kalamazoo is a traveller’s delight filled with loads of entertainment, local museums, bustling cafes & restaurants, planetariums and performing art venues. It’s a thriving city that growing & flourishing with exciting touristic opportunities. Some of the famous things to check out in Kalamazoo include –

1. Visit Henderson Castle

This historic fairy-tale castle has been a popular spot in Kalamazoo for ages. The castle has everything that you’d normally expect to see in countries like Ireland and Scotland. There are large garden spaces filled with varietals of plant species, vineyards, ballrooms and excellent interior decor – which ultimately makes it an eye-pleasing attraction for visitors. You wouldn’t expect a modern city like Kalamazoo to have such a historic castle based within, however, it’s one of the coolest spots to visit.

2. Kalamazoo River Valley Trail

There’s nothing more adventurous in Kalamazoo except for the River Valley Trail which gives an enthralling experience of being close to nature. Covering more than 22 miles, this valley trail is a beginner-level path which is largely wide and flat, making it suitable for walkers, joggers, and bikers. The trail winds down through valleys, rivers and lakes, and can also be best experienced at night to view the city lights.

Detroit, MI

The largest city of Michigan, or ‘Motown’ – as it is often referred to by the localities – is one of the most diverse and fascinating cities of the Midwestern metropolis. There’s one thing for sure when it comes to visiting this highly renowned place – that there’s never a dull moment. From the enthusiasts of hockey and baseball games to the unique state-of-the-art museums, spacious parks, and year-round events, Detroit is a city which never fails to impress.

1. SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium

A great spot for large families travelling with kids – SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium is one of the best spots in Detroit to marvel at underwater species and coral reefs. The aquarium has been a massive crowd puller and you would often find this attraction a little too crowded. And it certainly justifies it, due to its massive collection of diverse marine life – ranging from seahorses and starfish to sharks and octopi.

Travel tip: Try to book tickets for the aquarium online and well in advance. It definitely isn’t easy to get any slots on walk-ins. You can also purchase skip-the-line tickets to avoid long queues.

2. Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

Detroit has had a huge automotive legacy for centuries. It’s the very reason why localities prefer calling it ‘Motown’ or ‘Motor City’ of America. And its legacy has been passed down in many ways to let the modern world know how huge the automotive industry is in Detroit. One of the fascinating ways to let yourselves get close to this history is by visiting the famous Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation .

This massive 250-acre museum vividly demonstrates the achievements of the country’s most influential men & women, their innovations, advancements, and modern tech. People who love cars or have some sort of obsession would absolutely love the collection of historic vintages placed here. There is about 300 years’ worth of expensive artefacts stored, with many annual & weekly events and exhibitions.

3. Explore the Gastronomy of Detroit

Detroit is not only filled with attractions and activities but also experiences that last with you forever. One of the must-feel experiences of your first-ever visit to this charming city has to be a food tour. The city’s cuisine scene is global yet traditional which brings in more diversity for visitors to experience its gastronomy.

The best way to explore Detroit’s most authentic stalls is to take guided food walks. Generally, these tours bypass tourist traps and can save you money from some expensive eatery places. Moreover, since localities may know more about the city than you – it’s best to hang around with the person to sample Detroit’s most amazing dishes.

While I don’t want to make you drool right away, do save some appetite for Detroit-style pizza, pickled bologna, Coney Dog, Double-baked Rye Bread, and Boston Cooler.

Hamilton, ON

During your onward journey to Hamilton, you’ll be crossing the borders, so do have your passports or ID ready. This idyllic town makes a perfect base for travellers to continue their journey towards Niagara. However, there’s an ample amount of things to do here as well.

Within the city’s vicinity, you could go out and explore a bunch of waterfalls like Great Falls , Albion Falls , and Tews Falls . Visitors preferring some adventure can hike the Bruce Trail, which is considered to be the oldest and longest in Canada. Alternatively, local museums like the Art Gallery of Hamilton , Battlefield House Museum , and Museum of Steam and Technology can be perfect for relaxed-paced travellers.

Southern Route I via Toledo

You won’t be needing passports for this route journey, as you’ll keep following I-90 E all the way up to Niagara Falls. This southern route isn’t a first choice for travellers, but it’s definitely worth taking if you’ve been to the Falls once. Cities like Toledo, Cleveland, and Buffalo make a great pit stop for overnight stays .

Nestled on the banks of Lake Erie, Toledo is an urban and cosmopolitan city sprawling with award-winning cafes & restaurants, pubs, nightlife, and tons of entertainment. Even if you’re just in the city to experience the vivid night scenes, then it’s all worth it!

1. Wildwood Preserve Metropark

Covering an area of 493 acres, Wildwood Preserve Metropark is one of the most visited places in Ohio state. It’s a fascinating park for families travelling with kids, who would absolutely love the nature trails and scenic attractions. Along with the natural sights, travellers can marvel at historic landmarks like Stranahan’s Georgian Colonial-style Manor House which is a complete eye-catching pleaser.

2. Visit Toledo Zoo

An action-packed family attraction – Toledo Zoo is one of the must-visit places in the city. Home to more than 10,000 animals with over 720 varieties of species, this zoo is massive in space. It’s the second largest city after all – which means there are tons of things to see and discover. However, sometimes it could also turn out a little overwhelming when you’re dumped with so many cool options.

You’ll simply love relaxing on its beaches or exploring the shoreline of the lake, or hiking or biking your way up to the lighthouse.

If you prefer some wilderness & greenery around, then I recommend taking a visit to the Erie Bluffs State Park . Visitors can easily spend a day or so hiking and fishing at this park. There are even multiple viewing platforms such as the 50-foot Coastal Observation Tower for people to soak in panoramic shoreline views.

6 Best Road Trips From Chicago

Waterfalls, storybook towns, incredible food, and more await just a short drive from Chicago.

Cities can sometimes feel like endless stretches of concrete — especially in the hot summer months — and Chicago is no exception.

Fortunately, there's a whole world out there beyond the city limits. While it doesn't always feel like it, there are so, so, so many worthy escapes within a few hours' drive of Chi-town: storybook towns studded with ice cream parlors, lakeside cities with entirely different cultures, and even places where you can connect with nature among waterfalls and lush trees. Waterfalls! Outside Chicago!

The Windy City's location, in this case, is your ally. Pack your car with some picnic accoutrements, and maybe some hiking gear just in case, and head off. You're within driving distance of some truly great, out-of-the-ordinary places that make for wonderful road trips. Here are six of them.

Madison, Wisconsin

Imagine a state already known for its beer and cheese having to cater to over 30,000 college students, and you've got some idea of the earthly delights that await in Madison, Wisconsin. This state capital could have been a destination in its own right for its unique geography — located on a narrow isthmus surrounded by two large lakes, it's beautiful even during cold Wisconsin winters — or its remarkable breadth of shopping, cultural events, and festivals, and architecture, but its food scene is virtually unrivaled for a city of its size.

The streets are filled with an eclectic mix of professors, politicians, businesspeople, street performers, and health nuts, and if you ask any of them for their favorite spot, you'll likely get a range of answers as large as the city's 250,000-plus population: American small bites at the new and renowned Mint Mark, tacos and margaritas at Canteen, Lao-Thai noodles from Vientiane Palace, and the list goes on and on.

Most students, however, will drive you toward craft-beer watering holes like The Malt House or Dotty Dumpling's Dowry, which purportedly serves one of the best burgers anywhere. Wash it down with some Wisconsin beer from New Glarus as well as some fried cheese curds, and you'll have yourself a real Madison, Wisconsin, night.

Madison is about two and a half hours from Chicago.

Starved Rock State Park, Illinois

Yes, Illinois isn't known for its natural beauty like some other states. Yes, its highest natural point is Charles Mound, a diminutive 1,235-foot hill. But that doesn't mean that hidden gems don't exist here. For a true escape from Chicago's steel-and-stone skyscrapers that is still within the state limits, drive to the area around Starved Rock State Park.

Visitors expecting more flat Illinois farmland will be surprised to find an incredible valley around the Illinois River, with lush trees, striking bluffs, and 14 gorgeous waterfalls feeding into the roaring waters. Starved Rock is a choice destination for camping, hiking, kayaking, and white-water rafting, and after you're exhausted from a day of physical exertion, it's also got a place to hang your hat: the Starved Rock Lodge .

However, if you feel like experiencing a bit more of the local flavor, the towns around the river valley provide it in buckets. Tiny, charming Utica is home to the August Hill Winery and some wonderful antique stores, while the historic towns of Oglesby and Ottawa are chock-full of Americana: small museums, galleries, and great food, particularly at the Red Dog Grill in Ottawa and The Rootbeer Stand in Oglesby.

Starved Rock State Park is about an hour and a half from Chicago.

Allegan County, Michigan

Lake Michigan is huge. And in the summertime, when the heat gets a little unbearable, you could easily just jump into the lake in Chicago. But there's something to be said for taking a jaunt out to Michigan to visit a string of lakeside towns that bring some truly unique qualities to the mix.

Douglas, Saugatuck, and Holland — and Fennville, though it's not right on the water — epitomize small-town charm, while still offering some truly city-sized amenities for city-sized appetites. Fennville is known as the fruit basket of Michigan, with apple orchards, vineyards, and berry farms alongside delightful creameries and even corn mazes, while Saugatuck and Douglas consistently take the cake as two of the best lakeside towns in the Midwest, with incredibly charming downtown areas, gorgeous undulating sand dunes, pristine blue water, and more art galleries than you can shake a stick at. In fact, it's here that two School of the Art Institute of Chicago instructors founded their own art school and residence, Ox-Bow, establishing an artists' colony right on the shores of Lake Michigan. Their legacy endures to this day.

Further up the road, you'll find a truly unique destination in Holland, where Dutch colonists established a foothold in the 1800s, bringing with them their culture, architecture, pastries (check out DeBoer Bakkerij), and even fields' worth of tulips, which you can find at Veldheer Tulip Gardens.

Fennville is about two hours from Chicago.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Among the many types of travelers out there — people who crave solitude, people who don't want to leave the 100-foot radius of their resort's pool — there are those who are fascinated by city life, jumping from one urban area to another. If you count yourself among them, a road trip from Chicago to Indianapolis is certainly warranted.

First off, it's the 15th-largest city in America, with a vast population and penchant for festivals, parties, and overall pageantry (it is the Racing Capital of the World, after all, and its famous month of May includes tons of smaller celebrations leading up to the Indy 500). No matter the time of year, though, you'll find Indianapolis in full swing, whether you're in the midst of its rollicking IndyFringe Festival in August and September or its Wine & Food Festival in June. It's also a museum hub, with the world's largest children's museum, several art museums with broad and granular focuses, and small museums focusing on its favorite children, from Vonnegut to President Benjamin Harrison.

But one of the main reasons visitors flock to Indianapolis is its incredible food scene, which has, in recent years, exploded into national prominence. Hot new restaurants like Bluebeard, Milktooth, Crispy Bird, Oca, and more have all contributed to its reputation as a gastronomical powerhouse, while iconic institutions like Workingman's Friend have been, well, working behind the scenes to keep Hoosiers well-fed for decades. It's about time their city gets noticed.

Indianapolis is about three hours from Chicago.

Traverse City, Michigan

If you're craving a real getaway, you can't do much better than northern Michigan — it's still within driving distance of Chicago and not as remote as the state's Upper Peninsula, while still providing a wilderness-tinged escape for city dwellers. The de-facto capital of the region, Traverse City, is a city in name, but its population of around 15,000 means it's got small-town charm and accessibility, making it a perfect gateway to the region's breathtaking sights. Stop in for a glass of beer or wine at one of the many famous wineries and brewpubs, like Mari Vineyards or Mackinaw Brewing Company, before heading into the wilderness.

From Traverse City's quaint streets, you can head north and explore the Leelanau Peninsula, or veer west to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Better yet, take scenic M-22 to tick off both boxes. Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of the country's best stretches of shoreline, with incredible dunes and westerly views that mean it's got some of the best sunsets east of the Mississippi.

From there, mosey up M-22 to continue exploring the Leelanau Peninsula, where wilderness encroaches a bit further and small towns, each with a population under 1,000, dot the roads. Hike through the dense forests, pick apples and berries at the region's many farms, and be sure to grab a heaping sandwich from the Village Cheese Shanty in the county seat of Leland (population 377).

Traverse City is about five hours from Chicago.

Galena, Illinois

In rare cases, a road trip doesn't just mean traveling great distances — it can also mean traveling back in time. That's what's figuratively the case when you drive west from Chicago to Galena, consistently rated as one of the best small towns in America. For decades, Galena has been on a mission to preserve its rich history, meaning it has one of the most unspoiled historic town centers in the country.

The town's good fortune started back in the mid-1800s, when it was the beneficiary of government grants to begin mining precious minerals located under the town. Since then, the town has focused on maintaining the buildings from that boom time, and there are architectural landmarks around every corner. The Galena Historic District is a particular delight, comprising more than 1,000 buildings, including the home of Ulysses S. Grant, a prime example of the Italianate style and now a dedicated memorial to his legacy. The town even has trolley tours that take you to its major historical and architectural benchmarks, contributing to its overall throwback feel.

Galena's best eating institutions don't necessarily date all the way back to 1850, but that doesn't mean they aren't also great — Durty Gurt's Burger Joynt was founded in 2007 and serves gigantic, almost architecturally impressive stacks of meat and cheese. Looks like everyone's concerned with building a legacy here.

Galena is about three hours from Chicago.

Road Trip to Chicago from Toronto – Four Day Itinerary

You’re going on a road trip to Chicago from Toronto? …. You should always takes the Detroit-Windsor tunnel over the Ambassador’s Bridge

…were the first word’s that my friend, and fellow SYDE classmate uttered as soon as I casually mentioned that I was going to go on a road trip to Chicago from Toronto.  According to his co-workers who regularly traverse the Detroit-Windsor border, the tunnel is hands down better than the Ambassador’s Bridge. The line is shorter, it is cheaper than the bridge, and the border checkpoints are faster.

So far, I’ve been really lucky that with each destination I go, someone I know either knows another person who has made the same trip before, or has done the trip themselves as well. Regardless of the situation, I’ve always received warm words of advice that has made each vacation smoother and more enjoyable. Any advice to get to our destination a little faster was much appreciated – especially since driving from Toronto to Chicago is already an 850km  (~530 mi) journey one way.

This was an aggressively planned “see as much of Chicago in four days while breaking Maria’s 2 hour driving limit threshold”.

4 Day Road Trip Itinerary – Toronto to Chicago and Back

Itinerary breakdown.

The 4 day itinerary includes commute time back and forth to Toronto, and prioritizes hitting as many of Chicago’s’ top tourist spots as possible. You’ll see that most of sightseeing activities in Chicago are done over the course of two days . This itinerary does not include any detours to other cities or sights along the way from Toronto to Chicago .

The itinerary is organized into the following activities/main attractions:

Our Experience

This itinerary was definitely not an ‘easygoing’ plan and the four days were busy . Leaving Toronto at 6:00 AM ensured that we would arrive in Chicago in the evening and still have enough time to experience some of Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza, as well as one very unique night experience – turtle racing at Big Joe’s. I highly recommend checking out our first day in Chicago in more detail. You might think turtle racing hosted at a bar is a bit of odd combination – but you’ll see in our video that its actually a super fun and cheerful experience for everyone – turtles included (they get treats after their ‘race’).

On our second day, we chose to stack most of our ‘free/outdoor’ attractions to give ourselves a bit of a rest from the drive. Although it was a lot of walking around, we could spend as long or as little time in an area as we liked and rest whenever we needed to. Thankfully most of the key outdoor attractions we wanted to visit were near each other.

The outdoor attractions can be grouped into the following general areas:

• The Magnificent Mile
• Cloud Gate / The “Bean”
• Jay Pritzker Pavilion
• Lurie Garden
• Wrigley Square
• Grant Park Maggie Daley Park’s Play Garden
• Buckingham Fountain
• Navy Pier River Architecture Tour ( not free )

Overall, our favorite activity on day two was actually an unplanned experience with the River Architecture Tour . Not all cities offer a river tour, and this one really takes you around the core downtown of Chicago. On top of seeing a city from a river view perspective, the tour emphasizes the history and stories behind many of the unique buildings, gates, and bridges that come into view. Something I also highly recommend, is finishing the day with a cocktail and Chicago’s night skyline at the Signature Lounge .

For our third day – we spent most of our time indoors at various locations. The night before, we purchased Chicago’s CityPASS at the John Hancock Tower to give us discounted access to our upcoming attraction visits. If you aren’t familiar with CityPASS , it is a product that is offered at over ten American cities (and is also offered for Toronto too!) that allows you to access the city’s attractions at a discounted price (up to half off at some attractions) for up to nine days. At the time of writing, Chicago’s CityPASS offered free admission to:

• Shedd Aquarium
• Skydeck Chicago (at the Willis Tower)
• Field Museum

and discounted admission to:

• Art Institute of Chicago
• Museum of Science and Industry
• 360 Chicago Observatory Deck
• Adler Planeterium

With our CityPASS, we visited the Art Institute of Chicago during the day, the Shedd Aquarium later in the afternoon, and then went to the Skydeck at the Willis Tower in the evening. I’d definitely recommend visiting the Skydeck Observation tower in the evening closer to sunset to catch some golden ray photo opportunities and to see Chicago’s skyline bathed in the sunset glow.

The last day was mostly the drive back home to Toronto. But at this point, we were pretty bummed out that we had only visited three of the seven attractions offered by CityPASS. So in the spirit of getting the most experience for our buck, we decided to stay in Chicago until the afternoon – pushing our arrival time back to Toronto until later in the evening.

After checking out from our motel, and with the extra morning time in Chicago, we headed off to the Field Museum . The drive from the motel to the Field Museum was short and sweet, but the parking fees, on the other hand, were not. For three hours, parking was $19 at the Field Museum! Like most cities, parking fees can really make a dent in your wallet if you aren’t careful.

****Maria’s Tip – Any downtown exploration should really be done without a car! Parking Fees will suck your budget faster than you can blink an eye.****

The CityPASS version of the Field Museum ticket offers access to all of the Field’s Museum exhibits including the Underground Adventure – an interactive exhibit meant for children, to explore all the activities that go on directly underground.  We stayed here for three hours and we only had time to see the following exhibits in short detail:

• Sue the T-Rex
• Tattoo exhibit (ticketed but covered with CityPASS)
• Underground Adventure (ticketed but covered with CityPASS)
• Travelling the Pacific
• Ancient Egypt
• Galapagos 3D Movie (ticketed but covered with CityPASS)

Although some travel blogs recommend spending an hour or two here, Angelo and I agreed that we could have easily spent more than the three hours we were here for – especially when there’s a 3D movie involved that took 40 minutes of our time. Don’t get me wrong though! The movie was a great documentary and makes me want to re-binge watch Planet Earth and Planet Earth II again.

For future visitors who enjoy museums, we definitely recommend spending a day here if you have the chance!

The drive back home was surprisingly quick – 8.5 hours as predicted by Google Maps, even with the occasional restroom breaks and driver switching breaks. From our drive to Chicago, we learned that 3-hour driving shifts were best to give our legs a good stretch and give each other more time to rest and recharge on the passenger’s side. Those cat naps and shorter switches made for a safer and more pleasant ride back home.

Looking back, we had an aggressive itinerary. To save money and boost our health – we decided to walk to almost every destination we could (excluding going to Big Joe’s as it was half an hour’s drive away from the core area of Chicago)

By the end of the trip, we each walked over 32 km (~20 mi) in the span of three days. My feet ache just thinking about it.

If you were to follow our itinerary, I would recommend you take public transportation, the taxi, or the Chicago go bus to get around. It will not only give you  more time at each destination but will also save you from aching feet too!

Distance: as far as you can go

No American road trip is complete without covering some part of classic Road 66 – of which, lucky for us, kicks off in Chicago!

Snap a selfie at the official sign between East Adams and South Michigan Avenue then check-off stops such as the Gemini Giant, the Pontiac murals, Lincoln Presidential Library and more. If you can spare a month, make it all the way down to the Pacific Ocean.

2. Illinois’ Great River Road

Distance: 3.5-hour drive

In a seemingly never-ending chain of historical sites and activities, the drive along Mississippi River to East Dubuque is one of the best road trips from Chicago.

Moline and Rock Island are two cool detours but you can head straight for East Dubuque for its Chicago Great Western Railway Depot Museum. John Deere Pavilion lets you hop from car to farm machines, while the city Nauvoo shows off many historic homes. 

3. Lake Michigan to South Haven

Distance: 2.5-hour drive

Escape the heat by packing your car with beach gear and setting off for a nice drive around Lake Michigan and towards South Haven.

There are plenty of berry farms along the way so you can stain your hands with blueberries; or maybe you prefer to climb up a lighthouse?

To take your road trip even further, bring a bike! Cruise along the water front; take a dip or two.

4. Shawnee National Forest

Distance: 6-hour drive

One of the longest Chicago road trips on the list, it’s more than worth it to visit Shawnee National Forest. In fact, plan to camp amidst the spectacular range of landscapes for one of the best driving trips from Chicago!

Local favourites include the Garden of the Gods – you’ll find super special rock formations like Anvil Rock. Little Grand Canyon and Bell Smith Springs feature moderate hikes; Inspiration Point offers panoramic views over the prairie, Mississippi River and the forest.

If you want the best road trips from Chicago when it’s colder and darker, then these are the best ones for you.

5. Grand Rapids

Distance: 3-hour drive

After just long enough of a drive, pull into Grand Rapids for a nice sweep of activities. The Beer City Ale Trail will keep you road-tripping on foot (or car, if you have a Designated Driver); or wander through Downtown Market for food adventures instead.

Warmed by booze, drop by the 158-acre Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park where their installations are bright pops of colour against an all-white backdrop. 

6. Muskegon

Speaking of unusual winter activities, I’ve heard so much about Muskegon Winter Sports Complex. Just an hour from Grand Rapids, it’s a great next stop on your Chicago road trip.

Their Olympian-designed ice-luge course is perfect for beginners, spanning 850 feet of forested speed racing. Muskegon is also home to USS Silversides Submarine Museum if you’re into marine vehicles, and there’s a great pier and lighthouse too.

7. Indianapolis

When temperatures are cold, cold, cold – you might opt for staying indoors. The city of Indianapolis is one of the best road trips from Chicago during winter because of its incredible indoor entertainment: museums.

From the Indianapolis Museum of Art to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum to quirky Indiana Medical History Museum, you can escape the cold all day!

Of course, drop by famous City Market for great eats and then maybe go on a catacombs tour underground too. This makes for one of the best road trips from Chicago.

8. Boyne Mountain Resort

Distance: 5-hour drive

Michigan winters are best captured with the ski resort of Boyne. Drive past snowy landscapes to reach 850 acres of skiing, snowmobiling, dogsledding and photography escapades.

While the forested grounds offer romantic snow-covered views, don’t miss out on the epic zip lines that take you through the trees and slopes. 

If you like your road trips from Chicago with a bit of snow and ski thrown in, then this is a great option for you.

9. Apostle Islands

Distance: 7-hour drive

It’s an unforgettable journey to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore as winter ice freezes thickly to transform water into road, ending with stunning ice caves!

Make sure to visit the only inhabited Madeline Island as well for a cool wind sled experience and hot tub stay. 

Day Road Trips from Chicago

10. lake geneva.

Distance: 1.5-hour drive

Chicago’s number one when it comes to day trips, Lake Geneva is one of the best lake town’s in the US.

Downtown boasts all the food and drinks you need for the inevitable food baby; you might even land a booze cruise.

Hot air balloon rides, Lake Shore Path, ziplines and even ski slopes make it a year-round place to visit. It’s a multi-visit destination for sure!

11. Harbor Country

Distance: 1-hour drive

Wind between the towns of Michiana, Grand Beach, Three Oaks, New Buffalo, Lakeside, Union Pier, Harbert and Sawyer. This Chicago road trip will have you hopping between wineries and breweries, not to mention the beach.

It’s so close to the city, but the sand dunes and soft grasses make it a wholly different world. 

12. Starved Rock State Park

Distance: 2-hour drive

Families and romantics will love Starved Rock State Park for reasons that include: 13 miles of hiking, 18 canyons, free entry and nature-surround lodge.

It’s a great location to unplug for a day as you hunt down natural rock pools, waterfalls and incredible moss-strewn glades. You can even visit in the winter for cross-country skiing and cuddles in front of expansive mountain views. 

13. Saugatuck 

Making up Lake Michigan’s “art coast of Michigan”, Saugatuck and its neighbours (Fennville and Douglas) are house dozens of art galleries!

Unique and LGBTQ+-friendly shops feature alongside artsy hubs to make it a super welcoming town. Of course, famous Oval Beach appeals with soft dunes and paddleboat rides too. From craft booze tours to fruit picking and corn mazes, it’s one of Chicago’s best road trips.

14. Elkhart Lake

I won’t spoil it for you but this 292-acre lake and nearby Kettle Moraine State Forest is truly a place to unwind from the crowds.

You can hike the epic Ice Age National Scenic Trail or bike down Old Plank Road Trail. Pumpkin patches, race-tracking and fishing are all inclusive!

15. Ann Arbor

If you’re looking for an all-season destination, Ann Arbor is the perfect road trip from Chicago.

Huron River entertains with kayaking, paddle-boarding, tubing and swimming; Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum displaying beautiful foliage. Definitely spare some time for Kerrytown Market and Shops for all their indie offerings! 

16. Door Country

Also called ‘Cape Cod of the Midwest’, Door Country is a 70-miles-long basket of fun!

You’ll never get tired of exploring its orchards, coves, lighthouses and wineries. Away from the light pollution, Newport State Park offers stunning starlit skies while Ephraim is all the small-town charm you need. Just imagine – 300 miles of coastline.

You can reach Galena under 4 hours but I recommend taking your time. Pull up through scenic rolling hills to go back in time because the Galena Historic District is made up of cobblestone streets and over 1,000 buildings from the 19 th century.

For those non-history buffs, Chestnut Mountain opens as a ski resort in the winter; Stagecoach Trail and Apple River Canyon State Park are open year-round. 

18. Richland County

To really escape from people, Richland County is a rural road trip destination where you can bunk for the night. But away from the isolated and lush property of Candlewood Cabins are fields and hills that keep you outdoors all day.

The Ridge Road and Pine River Recreation Trail fulfils all your adventurous needs – where else would you find wildlife while biking over abandoned railroads?

You also have three rivers and five state parks within an hour’s distance, and the lovely 100-mile Lower Wisconsin River Scenic Byway for more driving way. 

19. Huron-Manistee National Forest

Michigan really surprises us again and again!

Along the peninsula is the expansive Huron-Manistee National Forest, one of the best road trips from Chicago if you are a nature enthusiast. A single paved road takes you through dense forest (beautiful in the fall) to parking areas so you can hike your way through the serene space or canoe on the rivers.

A Complete Guide for a Chicago Road Trip

Packing for a road trip to Chicago is a great way to explore new destinations, scout new neighborhoods, soak in the breathtaking views, and create memorable experiences. 

If you're planning a road trip to Chicago, the Windy City, it's essential to be well-prepared to make the most of your adventure. 

Since I have lived in the area for 30 years, you can use this guide that I created to help you through the essential items to pack, tips for driving in Chicago, road safety tips, and more.  

So, fasten your seatbelts and get ready for an exciting journey!

Essentials Items for a Chicago Road Trip

Firstly, let's get the obvious items out of the way. Although they apply to just about any road trip, I think it’s important to keep this in mind for Chicago too.  

Comfortable Clothing: When starting your road trip, opt for comfortable clothes that are suitable for long hours of sitting. Choose breathable fabrics, such as cotton, and consider layering to adapt to changing temperatures during your road adventure.

Weather-appropriate Gear: Depending on the time of year, Chicago's weather can be unpredictable, so pack accordingly. In spring and fall, you will want to layer your clothing. Bring a light jacket or sweater, a raincoat or umbrella, and hats and gloves for colder seasons.

Snacks and Drinks: Keep yourself fueled during the drive with a variety of snacks like granola bars, fruits, nuts, and bottled water. During summer, bring a cooler for the road trip to stay hydrated and to store perishable items. It will also s ave you time and money so that you don't have to stop and spend extra dollars at pricey convenience stores. 

Navigation Tools: Ensure a smooth journey by bringing a GPS device or using a reliable navigation app on your smartphone. For your road trip, you could have a physical map or printed directions that serve as backup.

Entertainment Options: Long road trips can be tiresome, so pack entertainment options like books, podcasts, or audiobooks. Prepare playlists with your favorite music to keep the atmosphere lively. Also, pack some games and movies or have a list of engaging car games prepared for the little ones when traveling on a road trip. 

Roadside Emergency Kit: Prepare for unexpected situations by carrying a roadside kit. It's always wise to be prepared for any emergencies on the road. Put together a roadside emergency kit that includes a spare tire, jack, jumper cables, flashlight, first aid kit, basic tools, and a roadside assistance contact number. Additionally, consider adding a portable phone charger and extra batteries to stay connected.

Tips for Driving in Chicago

When it comes to driving in Chicago, there are a few things that people might not know. First and foremost, be prepared for the notorious traffic congestion, especially during peak hours.

Chicago has a public transportation system. I advise that you use it as much as possible because it will save you time and money especially during peak season while visiting the city.

Peak Traffic Hours

The morning peak hours going into Chicago are between 6 AM and 9 AM. The peak hours leaving Chicago are between 3 PM and 7 PM.

The evening hours extend just a bit because some like to visit happy hour events, so the peak period is a tad longer.

Anytime outside of these hours is generally OK for driving except for popular sports events like a Bulls or Bears game, a concert, or other city-hosted events like parades and large festivals.

Also, note that Chicago is a bustling city that does a lot of business, so you will have to contend with semi-trucks, delivery vans, and heavy-duty trucks.

Construction

There is a saying in Chicago that "There are two seasons of the year, winter and construction."

Plan your driving around the peak traffic hours and look for alternate routes via GPS. Even if you have extra time, don't take it for granted.

Delays during construction are inevitable (and frustrating when the traffic is reduced from 4 to 1 lane)! There may also be delays caused by unexpected accidents or slowdowns caused by emergency vehicles.

Parking is always a challenge in the city and it's very expensive and fees for parking violations are hefty. The best way to locate a garage is via SpotHero.com. You can find discounted fees for early arrivals (before 7 AM) but the hours you are allowed to stay for the discounted price is usually limited.

If you are staying in the downtown area and have a parking spot, I suggest you leave the car and use public transportation during your stay. Getting around Chicago is very easy, and you will save more money by avoiding the expense of additional parking.

If you do need to use a car, familiarize yourself with street parking regulations. There is rarely free street parking and just about every parking space downtown is metered. Look for the meter posts near the end of each block to pay for parking. The machines accept cash and credit cards.

When parking in neighborhoods, you will find that some require a permit or vehicle sticker. In winter, the lack of snow removal makes it difficult to find parking so residents will "reserve" spots with chairs, cones, or anything they can find. My advice is to avoid using these spots or you may risk retaliation.

Lastly, if driving in Chicago intimidates you, stay in the right-most lane or use the side streets. Avoid the road rage caused by speeding drivers who don't use good driving etiquette. Try not to block cars who are trying to cross the main road from alleys, parking lots, or turning lanes.

Keeping these lesser-known aspects in mind will help ensure a smoother and stress-free driving experience in the bustling streets of Chicago.

Road Trip Safety Tips

While embarking on a road trip to Chicago, it's crucial to prioritize safety. Read further for some essential safety tips to ensure a smooth and secure road trip.

Check Your Vehicle Condition

Before hitting the road, inspect your vehicle's tires, brakes, lights, and fluids. Ensure everything is in good working order and consider getting a professional mechanic to perform a thorough inspection.

Plan the Route

Plan your route in advance, considering traffic conditions and any road closures. Utilize GPS navigation or maps to avoid getting lost and save time.

Share Your Itinerary with Family and Friends

Inform a trusted friend or family member about your road trip itinerary. Provide them with details of your planned route, accommodation, and expected arrival times. Take Regular Breaks

Itineraries by Car: The Most Scenic Drives in Chicago

Once you've reached Chicago, there are several iconic attractions you shouldn't miss. Here are some must-see places that will make your road trip unforgettable.

Lake Shore Drive

Take a leisurely drive along Lake Shore Drive, which stretches along the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan. Enjoy stunning views of the lake, the city skyline, and iconic landmarks like Navy Pier and Grant Park.

Lake Shore Drive is about 16 miles long. You can start at 67th Street in the South Shore neighborhood and go north to Hollywood Avenue.

The Magnificent Mile

Cruise along North Michigan Avenue, known as the Magnificent Mile. Marvel at the impressive architecture, luxury boutiques, and iconic landmarks as you drive through this bustling shopping district.

The Magnificent Mile is one mile long and starts at the Chicago River and extends north to Oak Street Beach .

The Outer Drive

The Outer Drive is also known as South Lake Shore Drive. This scenic route takes you through the southern part of the city, offering picturesque views of the lake, harbors, and the Museum Campus which consists of The Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Adler Planetarium.

The Outer Drive starts at East Jackson Drive and extends south to East 67th Street. It is in the southern part of Lake Shore Drive.

Green Bay Road

Head north of the city and take a drive on Green Bay Road. This road offers a scenic journey through the charming suburbs, lined with beautiful homes, parks, and quaint downtown areas.

Green Bay Road extends through the northern Chicago community and multiple northern suburbs including Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Waukegan, and Zion. These are great towns to explore outside of Chicago during your road trip.

Sheridan Road

Embark on a drive along Sheridan Road, which runs parallel to Lake Michigan. This picturesque route takes you through charming neighborhoods, historic mansions, and scenic lakefront parks.

Sheridan Road extends through the northern Chicago community and multiple northern suburbs including Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, North Chicago, and Waukegan. You make want to include a visit to some of these towns during your Chicago road trip.

Chicago Skyway

Is it safe to drive during the eclipse?

Yes, it's safe to drive, but AAA reminds drivers that there could be more traffic on the road before, during and after the event, so people should use caution.

Katie Bower, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, told the Detroit Free Press driving in an eclipse is not something motorists generally think about.

“Since they are such a rare occurrence, we don’t often think about how an eclipse might impact driving conditions due to the unique challenges it brings to roadway safety,” according to Katie Bower, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. “As the eclipse unfolds, and visibility decreases, drivers and pedestrians should be extra cautious, patient and alert to ensure everyone makes it home safely.”

How to drive during the Eclipse

According to AAA.com , you should do the following while driving during the eclipse:

• Keep your vehicle’s headlights on.  
• Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.  
• Don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving.  
• Don’t try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.  
• Don’t pull over to the side of the road, highway or interstate to view the eclipse.  
• Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.  
• Be mindful of pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky!

Though Delawareans won't be able to see a full eclipse of the sun, the partial eclipse begins at 2:07 p.m. and ends at 4:34 p.m. on Monday, April 8.

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter. 

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake. 

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said. 

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out," 

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake. 

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884. 

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

EAGLE PASS, Texas − In a moment of cosmic alignment that was precisely predicted yet undeniably mysterious , the moon crept across the face of the sun as seen from Earth, casting its shadow onto the United States on Monday.

And then it was over: A total eclipse of the sun has come and gone.  

The partial shadow crossed into the U.S. in Texas just after noon local time, and a bit more than an hour later, the minutes of “totality” began. The total eclipse of the sun then traced a path from southern Texas to northern Maine, where it exited into Canada and the ocean beyond.

The rare event was an astronomical experience like no other. Monday's eclipse was unusually accessible to millions of people. It was widely anticipated not only for its remarkable period of darkness, but for its rare timing: No total solar eclipse would be visible from the contiguous United States again until 2044. While millions of Americans may have seen today’s eclipse, a small group in Texas was among the very first.

Edge of eclipse shadow began in south Texas

Alejandra Martinez, a seventh-grade science teacher from the south Texas border city of Eagle Pass, peered up at the gray, gauzy sky, anxiously awaiting the solar eclipse’s entrance into the USA.

Sitting with a telescope under a camping canopy in a corner of the county airport, Martinez, 42, and two other science enthusiasts had been recruited by NASA to participate in an effort called Citizen CATE 2024, where more than 30 teams perched in the eclipse’s path will record the shadowy trek across the country. 

In this spot, less than five miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, she and her team would be among the first people in the U.S. to witness the phenomenon. Eagle Pass sits near the very beginning of the eclipse’s track from southwest to northeast across the country. It also sits very near dead-center of it, where the period of “totality” will be the longest. That total shadow was still more than an hour away when the edge of the shadow began to darken the sky.

Martinez, dressed in a “This Totality Rocks” T-shirt and eclipse-themed skirt, watched as the penumbra crept across the airfield, about 10 minutes past noon local time. She put on her eclipse glasses and peered up at the sky. The gauzy clouds parted. “There it is! There it is!” she yelled. “First contact. It’s begun!”

Clouds came and went as the shadow grew for the next hour. As totality approached Eagle Pass, the sky shaded a dull gray then a heavy brown and the temperature dropped a few degrees. Only a sliver of the sun remained.

A few seconds before 1:27 p.m. CT, the crowd counted down, “3..2..1…” The sun was gone, completely covered by the moon. Darkness spread over the small airport grounds. “Oh my god,” Martinez said, a hand covering her heart. “This is so cool!”

How to tell if you have eye damage from looking at a partial eclipse?

For those who took a chance and looked at the sun without protective eyewear during the eclipse, concerns may arise if their vision starts to seem impaired. Have they suffered eclipse blindness?

Looking directly at the sun even briefly without the proper safety glasses can result in eye damage, either temporary or permanent. The body's natural squinting reaction in normal circumstances prevents people from staring directly at the sun, but that reflex may not be activated during partial eclipses, even though a partly shielded sun can still burn the retina.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says pain won't be an indication of damaged eyes because the retina lacks pain nerves. Worrisome signs are instead blurry vision, headaches, light sensitivity, blind spots in the central vision, distorted vision and changes in color perception. Anyone experiencing those symptoms should see an ophthalmologist, the AAO says.

What was the timeline of the 2024 solar eclipse?

The total eclipse began in Mexico at about 11:07 a.m. PDT, Monday before crossing into Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. It ended in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT. Even those who weren't in the path of totality could see a percentage of the eclipse.

Students in Washington get hands-on learning

Dozens of students spilled out of Ida B. Wells Middle School in Washington, D.C., gripping cardboard solar eclipse glasses and chatting with excitement. “Why is the sun shaped as a moon?” one student asked after looking toward the sun. “Why is it not getting dark?’’ asked another.

Teacher Troy Mangum, who the students called “Mr. Mango,’’ slowly explained the science behind the experience as he cautioned others to put on their glasses. Students at the school in northwest D.C. had had lessons about the eclipse leading up the day’s teaching outside the classroom.

“Anytime we can get hands on or dynamic learning … it’s invaluable,’’ said Mangum, a social emotional learning coach. “We talked about it so much. It’s nice to see them get excited about qeeky Mr. Mango type of stuff.”

Skylar Cruel, 12, had come outside with her science class. “I just really wanted to see it,’’ she said. “You get to see it turn from light to dark.”

Steps away at Whittier Elementary School, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), younger students put on their glasses and tilted their heads up toward the sun behind their school.

Michael Haile joined his daughter, Markan Worku, 9, a student at Whittier, and brought along his 5-year-old son, Keab. He called it a memorable experience for his children. Markan, who had been learning about solar eclipses in her third-grade class, simply said, “This is cool!’’

In Michigan, a bonding experience for a mother and her three kids

In Michigan, eclipse enthusiasts packed a watch party along the Detroit Riverwalk near Cullen Plaza. They sat on the grass, on benches and berms. For Janelle Ikonen of Waterford, it was a chance to bond with her three children − Hannah, 9; Elim, 12; and Isaac, 14 − whom she took out of school for the day.

“I wanted to experience a unique event with them,” said Ikonen, 47. “It’s one of my big deals to me, to experience things with my kids. … I hope they’ll remember spending time with me.”

In Grand Rapids, where 94% coverage of the sun was expected, viewers gathered on the city's “Blue Bridge,” which offered a view of the eclipse over the Grand River. With no cloud cover over the city, visitors had an unobstructed scene. The Grand Rapids Public Museum set up a series of solar telescopes.

Jill and Wes Johnson, 50 and 14, were among those awaiting max coverage. They’d considered traveling from Grand Rapids to a place with total coverage, but decided 94% coverage was worthwhile enough to stay home.

“I think people are excited to see something unique,” Jill Johnson said.

US women's soccer team takes in eclipse ahead of title game

COLUMBUS, Ohio − The U.S. women’s national soccer team took a break from SheBelieves Cup preparation to watch the eclipse. 

Several team members, including World Cup veterans Crystal Dunn, Alyssa Naeher, Naomi Girma and Trinity Rodman, coaches and staff members donned eclipse glasses and went outside their hotel to see the rare event.

As the sky darkened and the moon moved in front of the sun, someone yelled, “Come on, keep going!” Columbus is just outside the path of totality, so all but a sliver of the sun wound up being covered. 

The USWNT is in Columbus for the final of the SheBelieves Cup on Tuesday night against Canada.

Witnessing the first total eclipse from a cruise ship

Passengers aboard Holland America's Koningsdam cruise ship eagerly gathered on the top decks at 10 a.m. local time to watch the spectacle of a solar eclipse.

Positioned off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico − the first city in North America to witness the total eclipse − the ship provided an ideal vantage point for viewing the celestial event. Accompanied by an astronomer, the captain meticulously adjusted the ship's position to ensure the best possible view.

Dan Fueller, an experienced eclipse observer who had previously seen similar phenomena from ships in 1991 and 1998, emphasized the advantages of viewing the eclipse from a cruise ship. He noted the flexibility of the ship's mobility allowed for optimal positioning along the eclipse's path, ensuring unobstructed views.

"You're on a cruise ship and (the best view) is a little bit farther to the west or a little bit farther to the east − along the path, there's a clear sky − the ship can move. If you're on land and there's not a road there, you better have a tank."

Partial eclipse 'like a little Pac-Man taking a bite out of the sun'

In Parthenon, Arkansas, the eclipse began near the Buffalo National River. Five friends traveled from Florida to be on a rock outcropping to witness the celestial event.

“Yes! I see it!” Angie Printiss exclaimed.

“Oh ya! You can see it,” said Kate Estes. “It’s like a little Pac-Man taking a bite out of the sun.”

At 20 minutes before totality, the sky got noticeably darker. The shadow of crescent sun shapes played off the limestone rocks.

“It looks like water − like fish scales,” Estes said. “That is so weird, when the trees move you can really see it.”

New Englanders travel for better view of the eclipse

Crowds ballooned into the thousands midday Monday in the center of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, as the nearly cloudless sky and warm sun boosted temperatures to an unseasonably 60 degrees.

Jim and Kim Cooper drove over from New Hampton, New Hampshire, their first time doing more than just passing through the town locals call St. Jays. Their son had proposed to his girlfriend in Tennessee during the 2017 eclipse and then had an eclipse-themed wedding, but the Coopers had never seen a total eclipse for themselves, so they decided to come to the closest place where they could be assured of a good view.

Jeffrey Breau had seen that 2017 eclipse for himself and was so impressed that he convinced family members to join him this time. Breau’s girlfriend, Nell Hawley, came up with him from Cambridge, Massachusetts, while his brother Alex and his girlfriend Diana Ventura drove up from New York City. The Breau brothers' father, Walter, joined them in taking in their first eclipse.

“I would have been OK watching it in the yard,” Walter said, though he would only have seen a partial eclipse from there. “That’s what you think now,” Jeffrey said quickly. “Talk to me in two hours.”

Kids bring homemade eclipse viewers to National Mall

Lucas and Lucy Porto Banco didn’t need to buy fancy eclipse glasses – the 7- and 10-year-old siblings made their own eclipse viewers from two cardboard shoe boxes left over from a couple of their mom’s recent shoe purchases.With the help of a YouTube tutorial video, they made two holes in each box with a whittling knife and taped tin foil over. Then they used dry spaghetti to poke holes in the tin foil for the sun’s light to pass through and project onto the dark inside of the box.The kids put together the viewer in little more than five minutes, Lucy said. “Maybe 15, with covering all the gaps in the shoe box,” she said.Even with his own eclipse-viewing creation, Lucas said he may still take advantage of his eclipse glasses. “I’m going to do both,” he said.

What is an 'umbra?' − and other eclipse words

Astronomers and eclipse enthusiasts used a bunch of specialized words Monday as the nation experienced its first solar eclipse since 2017 and the last one for until 2044. Here are a few of those terms and what they mean, according to the American Astronomical Society .

Baily's Beads – This refers to the beaded appearance of the moon's edge as the eclipse nears totality. Shafts of sunlight shine through deep valleys on the moon's surface, which causes the effect known to observers as Bailey's Beads.

Umbra – The darkest part of the moon’s shadow, within which the entirety of the sun's bright face is blocked. An observer standing in the umbra sees a total solar eclipse.

Penumbra: The lighter part of the moon's shadow, making up its outer portion, where light can reach.

Corona – The sun’s upper atmosphere, visible as a pearly glow around the eclipsed sun during totality.

Totality – The maximum phase of a total solar eclipse, during which the moon’s disk completely covers the sun's bright face. It can last from a fraction of a second to a maximum of 7 minutes, 31 seconds, depending on viewing location and other factors.

A last-minute search for glasses for 'a perfect spot'

Patsy Faoro walked toward a half dozen people gathered at the gate of Turner Farm Park in Great Falls, Virginia. The people were awaiting the opening of an eclipse viewing event complete with telescopes and educational presentations.

Faoro, who lives near the park in this upscale Northern Virginia neighborhood, just wanted glasses to safely view the eclipse.

She visited CVS, Safeway and a 7/11 convenience store, all of which had advertised the availability of glasses to view the eclipse. None of the retailers had any glasses remaining when Faoro checked this morning.

“We have this great big open space that’s a perfect spot,” said Faoro, who viewed her first eclipse in the 1970s. “We just need some glasses.”

Tory Patrick, 41, is hoping to give her four children a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity. Patrick and her family traveled 160 miles to Indianapolis Motor Speedway from their home in Granger, Indiana. They were expected to have 97% totality at home, but it’s not the same as total coverage, she said.

“They will be getting the full experience that they can’t read about in textbooks,” Patrick said.

Patrick and her sister Cally Gannon, 39, from Cincinnati, met in Indianapolis to view the eclipse from the speedway. They camped outside IMS over the weekend ahead of the event and on Sunday afternoon saw a double rainbow over the speedway’s iconic pagoda. An estimated 50,000 tickets were sold for the day’s festivities, presented in partnership with NASA and Purdue University.

Elsewhere in the stands, Ryan Harper, 30, knows today is special.

“We’re right in totality,” he said. “This sometimes doesn’t happen in people’s lifetimes.

Family travels from Baltimore to Rochester, N.Y., to view the eclipse

When Maze Pelham of Baltimore was a fifth-grader, he watched news of the 2017 solar eclipse and vowed to witness the next notable solar eclipse. That eclipse, and that day, has come. And this is why he and his parents, Janice and Sonney Pelham, left Maryland around 1 a.m. on Monday and drove nearly seven hours to Rochester, New York.

“I said to myself I would go to the next one,” Maze Pelham said while seated with his parents on lawn chairs at downtown Rochester’s Parcel 5 park, where he and hundreds of others are awaiting a view of the full eclipse. “It’s a promise I made to myself.”

In Brooklyn: Eclipses glasses, check. Lawn chair, check.

Ralph Emerson held a pair of paper sunglasses in his hands while riding the subway to Brooklyn's sprawling Prospect Park on Monday. He exited the train with a folded lawn chair strapped across his shoulder, and said he felt energized and full of anticipation.

"This is special," Emerson, 61, said. "I haven't woken up with this much excitement since the Super Bowl."

Walking to the park's botanic garden, Emerson said appreciating natural phenomena makes it easier to manage the stresses that come with living in a big city. Also like a big sports game, the eclipse will draw lots of people together to experience something much larger than themselves, in community, he said.

"A lot of times it's tragedies that bring us together, but sometimes things like this do," he said.

Texas Eclipse Festival cut short by weather

The Texas Eclipse Festival was canceled Monday in Burnet County, 50 miles northwest of Austin, because of weather concerns. The festival, which included bands and other events, began Sunday and was supposed to wrap up Tuesday.

"We regret to inform you of the severe weather forecast, including risks of high winds, tornadic activity, large hail, and thunderstorms for later today, including during the eclipse, Tuesday, and Wednesday," festival organizers said on their website. "Your safety is our top priority."

Festivalgoers were urged to leave early for safety and to beat traffic. Guests, however, were allowed to stay "provided they pack and are prepared to depart after totality."

Traffic jams, collisions mar eclipse watchers' travel

Traffic crashes and road delays were reported across the nation as Americans flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse . Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were overwhelmed with eclipse chasers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , where spectators will be able to view the full eclipse.

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and it's also within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which includes parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Multiple crashes were reported on an interstate in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, where several festivities and eclipse viewing events were scheduled. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement .

Airport draws a crowd of jets for eclipse

EAGLE PASS, Texas − Maverick County International Airport in Eagle Pass, Texas, usually sees maybe three private planes a day. By 10 a.m. CT on Monday, more than 10 planes crowded the tarmac, including Cessnas, Pipers and at least one corporate jet − all there to catch an early glimpse of the total solar eclipse. Eagle Pass will be one of the first American cities to witness the phenomenon. Some watchers, like Brandon Beck, 43, flew in Sunday night from San Diego and spent the night in a sleeping bag on the tarmac next to his friend’s Mooney single-prop piston four-seater.“We’re so lucky to be on a planet where the sun is the perfect size and perfect distance to create that effect,” he said. “It’s obligatory. We have to see it.”

First the Cherry Blossoms, then the eclipse

WASHINGTON − The Cherry Blossoms brought Ali and Aurore Youssouf to the city all the way from Paris, but the pair were delighted to learn that their trip would overlap with the eclipse. The day is extra special for Aurore Youssouf, 43, who has never seen an eclipse before. On Monday morning, the couple arrived by chance at the National Mall early enough to snag a few pairs of free eclipse glasses distributed by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum for the occasion.“We didn’t even know. We just ended up here and found out that they were giving away some glasses,” said Ali Youssouf, 46.

Awaiting eclipse − and hail − in Texas

KERRVILLE, Texas − Forecasts called for considerable cloudiness, rain and possible hail, but retired NASA engineer Jeff Stone stayed positive as he and his wife prepared to host more than a dozen people for a watch party at their hilltop home in Texas Hill Country. Stone, an eclipse enthusiast who had met family in Missouri to watch the solar eclipse of 2017, said he recently reviewed video footage of that event and said current conditions weren’t that much different than they were back then.

“I’m outside and seeing patches of blue among scattered clouds, so we’re remaining hopeful,” he said.

About 150 miles to the northeast in Gatesville, lead pastor Eric Moffett of Coryell Community Church said a similar forecast did little to deter an expected gathering of about 800 visitors for the church’s family-oriented “Eclipse at the Crosses” event. Many, if not most, were from out of town or even out of country − Canada, Wales, France, Italy. Many locals were staying home to avoid the crowd, he said.

“It’s partly cloudy, but the sun is shining on me right now,” he said. “We are praying that it stays that way.”

What is the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse?

A  total solar eclipse  occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. The Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, NASA says. Another major difference: No special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the a lunar eclipse, and people can directly stare at the moon.

Can you drive during the solar eclipse?

The  2024 solar eclipse  will shroud much of the United States in darkness on Monday, leaving many people to wonder: Is it safe to drive during the solar eclipse?

It is safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse. But the automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to "find a safe place to park (not on the side of a road or highway) away from other traffic and then wear your eclipse glasses," said Aixa Diaz, a spokeswoman from AAA.

"Pack your patience, whether traveling a great distance or locally," Diaz said. "People will be out and about to catch a glimpse of the eclipse."

A similar scenario  played out in 2017 during the nation's last total solar eclipse : Congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again. According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse. The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy. The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

But another eclipse scheduledfor Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

Eclipse and pets: It's not the sky that's the problem

An  eclipse  itself isn't dangerous for domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but experts say it's probably best to not bring pets to  experience the April 2024 total solar eclipse . Experts' biggest concern is not what’s happening in the sky but on the ground as crowds of excited and  eager people gather , said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dogs especially will take their cues from their owners rather than  the celestial event.

“Rather than the effects of the eclipse, I would be more worried about the excitement and all of the people,” Carlson said.

Here's an easy-to read, illustrated guide to help kids understand what the  April 8 total solar eclipse  means, where it will be visible and how you can watch it safely. It also shows them how an ordinary kitchen colander can easily be used to view a solar eclipse − the colander's holes can project crescent images of the sun onto the ground. There are even pages that can be downloaded and colored.

Trump's eclipse experience lit up internet in 2017

Seven years ago, when the last  total solar eclipse  crossed over North America, a photo of then-President Donald Trump  seemingly gazing at the sun with his naked eyes set the internet ablaze . During the afternoon of Aug. 21, 2017, Trump, who was president at the time, was joined by then first lady Melania Trump and their son Barron  to watch the rare phenomenon from the Truman Balcony  at the White House. Photos taken by members of the media captured all three donning eclipse glasses while looking at the eclipse.

But at one point during the viewing, the former president was captured in photos and videos without proper eye protection, seemingly gazing directly at the sun. Looking at an eclipse before or after the brief phase of totality without proper eyewear  can lead to eye damage .

How to make a solar eclipse viewer

People who didn't manage to get their  hands on glasses  are not completely down and out. There are other safe ways to view the eclipse , say experts, and a lot of them only require a little bit of craftiness and items you can find lying around the house.

Steps to make the cereal box eclipse viewer (And here is a video aid) :

• Get an empty, clean cereal box.
• Cut a white piece of cardboard that will fit snuggly in the bottom of the box, or secure it permanently by gluing it in place.
• Cut the top of the cereal box, removing both ends and leaving the center intact.
• Put a piece of tape across the center of the top to securely hold it closed.
• Tape a piece of heavy-duty foil or double a single layer for additional strength, covering one of the openings at the top of the cereal box. The other opening will remain open for viewing.
• Using a small nail (approximately 3mm in diameter) push a hole in the foil.
• Cover the entire box with construction paper, leaving the single-viewing opening and the foil uncovered.

The finished box should be held with the pin-hole side facing the sun. It may take a little practice pointing the box. With your back facing the sun, look through the viewing opening. A small image of the sun, about ½ cm in diameter, can be seen projected on the white paper inside the box.

What is the path of the solar eclipse called?

Those in the direct line of the eclipse will be treated to an incredible sight as the moon completely blots out the sun's disk, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness and revealing the sun's elusive outermost layer called the corona. That moment is called "totality" and this year the path of totality crosses through 13 U.S. states.

The last total solar eclipse to cut through North America was in August 2017.

How to look at eclipse without glasses

A total solar eclipse offers skygazers the rare opportunity to witness the eclipse with the naked eye. However,  solar eclipse glasses  are still needed until totality is reached. 

Certified solar eclipse  glasses are crucial for spectators to avoid the sun's retina-damaging rays. But when the moon moves completely in front of the sun and blocks its light, you'll know it's  safe to remove the glasses  for a short period of time.

How fast does an eclipse shadow travel?

According to a post from the  National Weather Service  in Indianapolis on X, an eclipse shadow travels at speeds from 1,100 to 5,000 mph. Near the equator, it travels at around 1,100 mph and increases in speed as it approaches the poles.

The eclipse party is over? Time to recycle those glasses!

Astronomers Without Borders , or AWB, a non-profit organization running its second nationwide  eclipse glasses recycling drive . Her business will join over 300 schools, museums, city governments, commercial businesses, community organizations and local libraries that will collect and ship an estimated  millions of glasses  to be repurposed for use by underserved communities around the world in  future solar eclipses .

AWB launched its first run of the program after the last solar eclipse in 2017 when volunteer centers across the country collected millions of the glass. After vetting them for reuse, more than  half a million glasses were distributed to Africa, Asia and South America.

People can visit  AWB's website  to find their nearest participating collection center and learn more about recycling the glasses, said Andrew Fazekas, the organization's communication manager.  

"We figure there's probably going to be tens of millions of glasses out there at the very least," he said. "And most of them are probably very gently used."
