Cruise Roma ferry Wiki

The vessel was launched on June 22, 2007, and delivered to GRIMALDI GROUP in January 2008. It is the first in a 4-ship series, with sisterships Cruise Barcelona , Cruise Europa , and Cruise Olympia . These are the largest Italian- flagged ferries. Each ship is powered by four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 12V46D) with combined power output 55,4 MW.

In March 2018, Grimaldi Group and the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri signed a letter of intent for a drydock lengthening and refurbishment project for the ships Roma and Barcelona. To both ferries were added prefabricated midship sections (length 29 m / 95 ft, weight 2540 tons). The project was completed in 2019 at Palermo Shipyard. During the drydocks, scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning system) and battery power technology were added to each ship.

Battery power is used during turnaround navigation in ports when the ship's diesel-electric generators are switched off. For the batteries (fabrication, delivery and installation) was contracted the Canadian company Corvus Energy (Richmond BC) - one of world's largest manufacturers and suppliers of energy storage solutions (ESS) for the maritime industry. The company provides ESS to hybrid and all-electric ferries. As of 2019, Corvus Energy delivered its innovative product line "Orca ESS" to 200+ vessel conversion/upgrade projects, totaling 200+ MWh.

On July 3, 2019, Corvus Energy completed the installation of a total of 11 MWh energy storage systems (5,5 MWh per ferry - Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona). These batteries allow the cruiseferries to turn off their diesel engines and operate on battery power for up to 4 hours during in-port stays.

Following the conversions, each vessel has LOA length 254 m (from 225 m), GT tonnage 63000 tons (from 54919 tons), passenger capacity 3500 (from 2794), cargo capacity 3600 lanemeters (3000 m2 car deck, from 3000 lanemeters / 176 cargo vehicles), lounge seat capacity 600 (from 150 seats). The drydock refit project added 600 lanemeters, 80 new staterooms (total 559, from 479), 2 new seating lounges (combined capacity 450 seats), new self-service family restaurant (capacity 270 seats), a new theme restaurant. Refurbishment works included renovations of all existing public areas. Vessel's safety equipment (life rafts, boats, life jackets) was also upgraded to comply with its increased capacity.

The port of Civitavecchia is the world’s 13th busiest cruise port and it’s massive – Officially named “Roma Cruise Terminal (aka RCT)”, it consists of 8 cruise terminals and 15 berths that can accommodate the world’s largest cruise liners. Civitavecchia port is also a homeport, meaning that cruises start and end in Civitavecchia.

Civitavecchia Port Link is the shuttle bus that normally runs between the cruise terminals and the train station, from where you can take a train to Rome. The single ticket for this bus costs 6€ one way and the ride takes up to 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a free shuttle bus provided by the port authorities to Largo della Pace information point, from where you can walk for 20 minutes or take a local bus to the train station.

1. St Peter’s Basilica

The Basilica of St Peter is the largest church and one of the most impressive religious structures in the world. It is located in Vatican City and with its immense dimensions and surface area of 22.000 square meters, it can host around 20.000 people. The church is believed to be the burial place of Saint Peter and is home to countless monuments and masterpieces including the works of Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno, Bernini, and other notable artists.

The entrance to the Basilica is free, although you may face lines and security screening. To get to the Basilica, you need to get off at Stazione San Pietro and then walk for 10 minutes to the square.

2. Vatican Museums

Vatican Museums are located next to St Peter’s Basilica and you need at least half-day to visit the major artworks and galleries. Because Vatican Museums contain one of the largest collections of artworks in the world, I suggest you make a selection of the main points of interest based on what you want to see. Some of the main places of interest are:

  • Sistine Chapel – Goethe said: “Without having seen the Sistine Chapel one can form no appreciable idea of what one man is capable of achieving”. Michelangelo Buonarroti’s masterpiece depicting biblical scenes is a number one must-see in Vatican Museums!
  • The Pinacoteca , with 18 rooms housing paintings dating from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, including the works of Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Perugino and Caravaggio.
  • The Pio Clementino Museum – The largest complex inside the Museums that houses the most important Greek and Roman sculpture masterpieces.
  • Gregorian Egyptian Museum – This part consists of 9 rooms displaying exhibitions, monuments and artifacts from Ancient Egypt.
  • Gallery of Geographical Maps – It is one of the most fascinating rooms in the Museums and an unmissable place for history and geography buffs.
  • The Carriage Pavilion – It is located in a separate section of the Museums and displays carriages, cars and sedan chairs used by various popes throughout history.
  • The Raphael’s Room – In the 16th century, the rooms were the private apartments of Pope Julius II, who commissioned the frescoes to Raphael.

If you are coming on a cruise and visiting Rome in a day, it is recommended to book a shore excursion with your cruise line to be on the safe side and not risk missing the ship. Alternatively, a cheaper option is to book a tour with a reputable independent tour operator (they usually have a lot of experience with cruise ship passengers so they’ll bring you to your ship on time), or, if you decide to visit on your own, book a skip-the-line ticket to avoid queueing.

Check out the guided tours of Vatican Museums (including the skip-the-line tickets)

3. Castel Sant’Angelo

The imposing fortress is located on the right bank of the Tiber River, a 10-minute walk from St Peter’s Square. The foundations of the castle date back to around 125 B.C. and nowadays it hosts the National Museum of Castel Sant’ Angelo where you can admire a large collection of sculptures, paintings, marble finds, weapons, furniture and various objects.

The majestic Colosseum is one of the seven wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Named after its colossal dimensions, the Colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheater in the world dating from 70-80 AD, built under the Roman Emperors Vespasian, and his heir, Titus. The massive amphitheater used to host gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, executions, animal hunts and theatre plays, and could hold on average 70.000 spectators. The Colosseum has been the symbol of Rome for centuries, and nowadays is a must-see attraction!

Cruise lines offer numerous shore excursions to the Colosseum, but you can also visit it on your own. To get to the Colosseum, get off at Roma Termini station and then take the metro line B to the “Colosseo” stop. You will probably face long lines, so it’s recommended to purchase the skip-the-line ticket.

The Roman Forum is one of the most fascinating archeological sites that used to be the center of everyday life and an administrative and commercial hub in Ancient Rome. It takes several hours to visit the entire forum, but in case you don’t have time, you can admire it from the street Via dei Fori Imperiali as it has a promenade overlooking the forum. The history of the Trevi fountain is connected to Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct dating from 19 B.C. that was used to provide water to the Roman baths and the fountains in central Rome. The Trevi fountain was built at the endpoint of the aqueduct, on the site where three roads intersect, and therefore was named the “Three Roads Fountain” (the “tri viae” in Latin means “three roads”).

Trevi Fountain is located in the historic center and is always packed with people. There is no entrance fee, however, be ready for a lot of crowds. While there, don’t forget to toss a coin into the fountain to ensure you return to Rome! To get to Trevi Fountain, get off at Roma Termini station, get the metro line A towards Battistini and after two stops get off at the “Barberini – Fontana di Trevi” stop.

The square is dominated by three lavish fountains (Fountain of the Four Rivers, Fountain of the Moor and Fountain of Neptun), and shadowed by the immense Sant’Agnese in Agone church , the 17th-century Baroque basilica that contains the skull of St. Agnes in a shrine. Piazza Navona is located within a 10-minute walk from Trevi Fountain.

A former Roman temple, and nowadays the Catholic Basilica with an imposing dome and massive entry columns, the colossal Pantheon peacefully sits on the tiny Piazza della Rotonda, only 5-10 minutes walking distance from Piazza Navona and Fontana di Trevi.

The iconic temple was completed by Emperor Hadrian in 125 AD, it has a cylindrical shape and features the world’s largest unreinforced dome made entirely of concrete. The central part of the dome has an immense opening that provides natural light to the interior of the temple, which houses tombs of renowned artists and members of the Italian Royal family, including Raphael, Vittorio Emmanuelle II, King Umberto I, and others. The entrance to the Pantheon is free of charge.

Civitavecchia has been the port of Rome since the days of Roman Emperor Trajan (first century AD). However, cruise passengers must know that the Eternal City is not a stone's throw away from the port in the coastal city of Civitavecchia.

Rome is around 45 miles (73km) southeast of the port in Civitavecchia. Because of the proximity to the Eternal City, almost all cruise lines list the port on their Mediterranean itineraries as "Civitavecchia (Rome)" or "Rome (Civitavecchia)" without specifying that there is some traveling involved if you want to visit the Eternal City.

In particular, first-time cruisers to Civitavecchia (Rome) should be aware that it may take up to one hour and a half to travel between the port in Civitavecchia and Rome.

Regardless of the distance between Rome and its Cruise Port, Civitavecchia is one of the most visited cruise ports of call and home port (embark and disembark) in the Mediterranean itineraries during the Spring-Summer season, with as many as 2.650 million passengers and over 800 cruise ships visits in 2019.

The cruise port is relatively close to Civitavecchia (a town with a population of 52,816), which has an enjoyable atmosphere; the vicinity is immaculate and well-maintained. The local population is friendly, pleasant, well-mannered, and speaks English well. For the most part, the city of Civitavecchia is very safe.

Cruise passengers with disabilities or walking difficulties will find it simple to wander around Civitavecchia independently. But, if you are cruising with young ones in your family, be aware that there are few attractions for kids or adolescents in Civitavecchia.

Many Mediterranean itineraries start or end a cruise in Civitavecchia - this means that Civitavecchia is a homeport or a turnaround port. Still, many other cruises call at the port of Rome in Civitavecchia for a day, usually arriving early in the morning and departing as late as 8 pm.

When on a cruise calling at Civitavecchia for the day, passengers will have enough time to travel to Rome and enjoy many, but not all, attractions of the Eternal City. Therefore, you should carefully choose the sites, monuments, landmarks, and things you want to enjoy, visit and explore in Rome.

For example, suppose you are on a cruise calling at Civitavecchia for the day. In that case, you can visit the Colesseum upon arrival in Rome and go to the Vatican to visit St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. But you will not have time to explore other sites, such as the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, or the Piazza Navona.

If you want to visit fabulous museums in Rome like the Musei Capitolini (Capitoline Museums), the Borghese Gallery, or stunning churches, you will have to plan carefully.

Besides Rome, there are also a few things for cruise visitors to do near Civitavecchia. In the last 5 years, cruise lines and tour operators have realized that many passengers were looking for alternatives to the excursions to Rome . Amongst other destinations, we highlight the archeological site of Tarquinia and Orvietto.

Where is the cruise port in Civitavecchia

The cruise port, officially named Roma Cruise Terminal , is on the northern outskirts of Civitavecchia, around 45 miles (73km) north of Rome. Civitavecchia is an important port city (population of 53,000) in the Lazio region on the East coast of Italy bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Civitavecchia is 39 miles (224 km) south of Livorno and 165 miles (266km) north of Naples, two other main Italian ports for cruises in the Mediterranean.

Ships dock on a large mixed ferry and cruise port where up to 9 cruise ships dock. There are different terminal buildings in the vast 2-mile long u-shaped basin with a breakwater.

The port has two main docking areas: one along the shore and another on the breakwater parallel to the coast. You will be closer to one of the two exits depending on where your cruise ships docks.

The port shuttle bus

There is a free shuttle bus in Civitavecchia cruise port provided by the port authority. The shuttle bus stop is by the gangway or just outside the terminal buildings. The final drop-off is on a well-organized welcome center. This efficent hub on Largo della Pace has a gated exite to Via Prato del Turco.

The shuttle has an additional bus stop next to the Fortezza Michelangelo for those on cruise ships docked in the breakwater. Close by is the other gated port exit which opens right into Civitavecchia's city center.

Cruise terminals, services and amenities in port

There are nine berths and 4 cruise terminals in the port of Civitavecchia. However, only two have solid modern construction. These two cruise terminals are close to each other on the breakwater.

  • Americo Vespucci. The newest cruise terminal has all services and amenities cruisers expect.
  • Bramante. Older terminal only with basic amenities.

As a rule of thumb, ships calling at Civitavecchia for the day dock at a berth without a terminal building. Cruise passengers will not find any services or amenities on the other terminals and docking spots. It is on the welcome center in Largo della Pace or right outside that you will find the following:

  • Tourist Information
  • Buses to Rome
  • Shuttle bus to the railway station
  • Local Tour Operators

Outside the welcome center in Largo della Pace, you will find taxis and the meeting point for independent operators booked online.

Map of the Rome Cruise Terminal in the port of Civitavecchia

Just a few yards outside the exit gates (turn left and then right into Via XVI Settembre) are the offices of the following car rental: Avis, Budget, and Hertz. Europcar is on Via Tarquinia 14, a street behind the welcome center in Largo della Pace.

What's within walking distance and the highlights of Civitavecchia

There are only a few things to do in the city of Civitavecchia for cruise passengers that prefer to explore attractions within walking distance of the port. Here are our favorite highlights:

  • Piazza Leandra and Chiesa della Stella (Church of the Star)
  • The Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi
  • Theater Traiano - the city's historical theatre
  • The Ghetto of Civitavecchia (piazza Antonio Fratti and surrounding area)
  • National Archeological Museum of Civitavecchia

For a long time (at least over one decade) there was a tourist kiosk close to the exit gates of the cruise port by the Fortezza Michelangelo . Cruise passengers that are visiting Civitavecchia for the first time or haven't been at this port for a while shouldn't despair. The same exact kiosk was moved and stands now by the start of Via Aurelia, the main avenue along the sea in Civitavecchia.

Italian is the official language and there are many different dialects in the country. However, English is widely spoken in all major touristic areas. The English-speaking cruise visitor will easily communicate with locals pretty much everywhere.

Like all big cities in Europe, Rome doesn't have much violent crime. However, like all cities with lots of tourists, petty crime is common in Rome, and you should be aware of pickpockets and street scams. By contrast, Civitavecchia is very safe.

Cruise from Rome – the essential guide

Panorama of Colosseum, make sure to visit when cruising from the Civitavecchia port of Rome

Are you planning your next vacation and considering a cruise from Rome? Visiting the epicenter of the greatest empire in history for the first time will give you goosebumps.

It’s not surprising that this remarkable city, steeped in history and tale, has a permanent place as a bucket list destination for all of us.

It’s impossible to see Rome in a day. Or even two or three. So stay as long as you can before you board your cruise ship. If Rome is a one-day stop, squeeze in as many sights, sounds, cultural landmarks, and culinary experiences as possible.

You can always catch up on sleep once on board the cruise ship.

In this article, we recommend our favorite hotels for cruise guests, offer four great daily itineraries to ensure you see the best of the city, and give you tips and information on how to get to the cruise port Civitavecchia .

Quick navigation

Where to stay before your cruise from Rome

Let’s start with where to stay before your cruise from Rome. Rome’s principal cruise port is the Port of Civitavecchia, about 90 minutes outside the city. Stay in the center of Rome, then transfer to the port on the day of your cruise. Or transfer to Civitavecchia the day before your cruise and spend the night there.

Here are some of our  favorite hotel options  in Rome. We have included top-rated hotels and more affordable ones, so there is something for everyone. Choose between six central neighborhoods. As there are thousands of hotels in Rome, sticking to these areas means you will be in a good location for the best sightseeing, transport links, restaurants, and shopping.

1. Pantheon and Piazza Navona

This is a popular area packed with great hotels. Expect to pay a higher price tag for your accommodation here due to the central location and ease of walking to many sights. This area is a favorite as I love old Rome, especially around Campo de Fiori with the colorful market (open Mondays through Saturdays).

  • Hotel Pantheon
  • Hotel Artemide
  • Boutique Hotel Campo de’Fiori

2. Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and Piazza di Spagna

Luxury shopping around Via Veneto and fantastic hotels can be found here, such as the Savoy Roma, Westin Excelsior, Marriott, and Sofitel. You are also close to the beautiful parks and gardens of Villa Borghese.

  • Hotel Savoy Roma
  • Hotel Condotti
  • Hotel Barocco

3. Trastevere

Some of my favorite restaurants are located in Trastevere. You will find better value for money here than prices in Rome’s more touristy areas. Try Antica Osteria Rugantino for delicious, local dishes. Alternatively, a 10-minute walk away is the classic trattoria Da Checco Er Carettiere. While Trastevere is not in the center of Rome if you enjoy walking, this charming neighborhood is about 30 minutes from many must-see sights.

  • Domma Camilla Savelli Hotel
  • Hotel Santa Maria
  • Trilussa Palace Hotel

4. Roma Termini

Hotels around the central train station in Rome (“ Termini” ) are plentiful and convenient. Several familiar names are here, such as Hotel Canada Rome (a Best Western hotel). Opt for at least a 4-star hotel. Just be careful around this area in the evenings; pickpocketing is not uncommon. It’s a good choice, especially if you are on a tighter budget or plan on using the train a few times during your stay.

  • The Hotel Canada Rome, Best Western Premier Collection
  • Bettoja Hotel Mediterraneo
  • Liberty Boutique Hotel

5. Colosseum and Monti

If are want to stay close to the iconic Colosseum and ancient Rome, choose this neighborhood for its quirky boutique and small cafes with a stay at, for example, Hotel Forum. Be prepared to take the metro train to visit other sights as it will be too far to walk from here.

  • Mercure Roma Centro Colosseo
  • Hotel Forum Roma
  • NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali

6. The area around Vatican City

Many visitors base themselves closer to the Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Basilica. You will stay close to the elegant area called Prati. It is within 30 minutes of walking distance to Castel Sant’ Angelo if mobility is no problem. You are also just 5 minutes by Metro from the Trastevere neighborhood.

  • Starhotels Michaelangelo Rome
  • NH Collection Roma Giustiniano
  • Le Méridien Visconti Rome

Hotels in Civitavecchia, close to the cruise port

Some cruise guests prefer to stay the last night before their cruise close to the port in Civitavecchia. Located 80km northwest of Rome, it takes around an hour from Termini station to Civitavecchia train station.

A Civitavecchia Express Train runs from Rome’s Termini station to Civitavecchia between April and November. The Civitavecchia Express runs daily from Rome’s central Termini station at 3.30 pm, and the journey takes one hour.

You can book train tickets in advance using Omio, which offers train tickets with all the major train operators in Italy. They have a user-friendly website in English, and you can pay in your own currency. Then you can download your tickets to their convenient app. Alternatively, you can purchase them at the station. Learn more here about how to search, compare, and book train tickets in Italy.

Civitavecchia is a charming coastal town dating back to the 2nd century; here are our recommended hotels:

  • Hotel Traghetto – this hotel offers complimentary breakfast with your booking. A shuttle bus is across the street to take you to your ship. You are more or less next door to the entrance of the cruise terminal. A grocery shop is nearby if you miss essential items from your cruise packing list. This hotel will also arrange a transfer if you come straight from the Rome international airport. Contact them by email before you leave home for a price quotation. If you are over 65, remember to ask for their senior discount!
  • Hotel San Giorgio – this is a good hotel. Ask for a room with a sea view. Take a 5-minute taxi ride to the port on the morning of departure.
  • Hotel Mediterraneo – a clean but basic hotel within walking distance of restaurants and a supermarket. You can walk to the port from here. However, it’s better to ask the hotel to arrange transport with the shuttle bus in hot weather.
  • Hotel Traiano – this hotel offers a complimentary shuttle transfer to the port. Ask the concierge for help booking this when you check-in. They will also help with airport transfers if you contact them before you leave home.

Four ways to see the best of Rome before your cruise from Civitavecchia cruise port

We have covered four primary areas of the city. Explore each as much or as little as you wish according to your schedule. And in any order you like.

In a city with so much history and art, it’s a good idea to pack a pocket guidebook so you don’t miss anything. And for some sights, it is worth booking a guided tour.

Day 1: The Jewish Quarter, Trastevere and Vatican City

Start your day by visiting The Roman Ghetto, the Jewish quarter in Rome. A small area stretching only four blocks but packed with unusual shops and small eateries.

Born on the edges of the Tiber River, Rome connects its neighborhoods with a series of bridges. From the Jewish quarter, walk over the Ponte Garibaldi and into one of these neighborhoods, Trastevere.

Many locals live in apartments, squeezed tightly along the narrow streets of Trastevere. You’ll find tiny bookshops, small cafés, and unique boutiques. In the center, Piazza Santa Maria has a good selection of restaurants surrounding the central fountain.

A tour of the Vatican museums and St Peter’s Basilica

While on this side of the Tiber, take the subway to Vatican City and start with St Peter’s Basilica. You now stand in the heart of iconic art and an architectural treasure trove.

St Peter’s Basilica is the largest church in the world and is located in St Peter’s Square (Piazza San Pietro). The church is free of charge to enter. However, the lines are very long.

We recommend purchasing a skip-the-line ticket , which is well worth the small fee.

After St Peter’s Basilica (or before, it does not matter which order you do this), visit the Vatican Museums. This includes Renaissance frescoes and, of course, the unforgettable Sistine Chapel.

To visit the Vatican Museums, you must pay an entrance fee. If you are visiting without a guide, we recommend you purchase the audio guide.

We strongly recommend, however, that you book a tour with a professional guide . It’s a great way to get a whole new appreciation of the wonders of this small nation.

Good to know before visiting Vatican City

  • There are security checks in Vatican City, and queues can be extensive. Be prepared to wait. Have a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat to beat the heat. There are public restrooms behind the post office.
  • Check that St Peter’s Basilica is open when you are due to visit. You cannot go inside the church on Sunday morning if there is a Pope’s mass. In addition, the Pope’s general audience is held in St Peter’s Square on Wednesday mornings. At this time, you cannot enter the church.
  • The dome of St Peter’s Basilica is open from March to October. You can take an elevator to the roof for around 10 euros per person. Climbing the steps takes longer but is a little cheaper. From the rooftop, it is 320 steps to get to the dome. Do not do this if you are not keen on confined spaces. It’s a tricky narrow climb up and down in the same way.
  • There is a dress code in Vatican City. The general rule is that shoulders and knees should be covered.

Onwards from Vatican City

From St Peter’s Square, walk straight down the broad avenue of Via Della Conciliazione. Before you cross the road at the end, turn around and snap an iconic view back towards St Peter’s Basilica.

Try to avoid the lunch restaurants along this street. In our view, they are generally overpriced for what you get and aimed at the unknowing tourist.

A Bird’s eye view over Rome from Castel Sant’ Angelo

Straight in front of you is the park and Castel Sant’ Angelo.

Designed by Hadrian as a massive tomb and now a museum, the castle gets its name from the statue on the roof of Sant’ Angelo. Only if you love art will this fortress be worth the entrance fee. It will take you around 1.5 hours to see the art and architecture.

Outside walk directly across the old Roman bridge Ponte Sant’ Angelo. Be sure to stop and look at the views around you as you cross the Tiber. This leads you back into the city’s heart and towards Piazza Navona.

Day 2: Piazza Navona, The Pantheon and Trevi Fountain

The center of Baroque Rome, Piazza Navona, is home to one of the most beautiful squares in Rome. Trendy cafes sit alongside magnificent palaces, spire and lantern churches, and tiny nightspots.

Take your time walking the small streets around the piazza. Look up at apartments with rooftop gardens that pack the tiny streets. Here local delis and hole-in-the-wall bakeries can be discovered. Order a plate of antipasti with a glass of sweet Riesling. Or a scoop of gelato if you are less hungry but need a sweet treat.

In the warm weather, the piazza is packed. Many visitors cluster around the elaborate fountains, the most famous being Bernini’s Four Rivers Fountain – Fontana Dei Quattro Fiumi.

Artists will want to paint your portrait or offer paintings and postcards of Rome’s architecture. They make great souvenirs. Take your time to explore the surrounding palazzos and frescoes. Finish with some antique window shopping along Via Dei Coronari.

Authentic gelato from a Roman artisan

A word about gelato: find an artisan who sells authentic gelato. That means one who makes their gelato on the premises with fresh ingredients. Authentic gelato is dense, not airy, and the colors are natural, not vivid and fake. Try Gunthers on Piazza di S. Eustachio; you will be spoiled forever.

The Pantheon Dome and its Oculus

A short 10-minute walk away from Piazza Navona is the two-thousand-year-old Pantheon. Stop for a cappuccino on Piazza Della Rotonda to take in the site of this ancient wonder. Imagine a busy Roman market where there are now tourist tables, cafés, and souvenir shops.

Entrance inside the Pantheon is free, and there are seldom queues. Follow your instinct and look up towards the only light source – the oculus – at the center of the incredible dome.

If you want to experience shopping at its best before you cruise from Rome, walk Via del Corso. One of the central and most elegant shopping streets, it ends at Trevi Fountain. The fountain is probably the most famous site in Rome.

Remember to turn your back and throw a coin over your shoulder into the Trevi Fountain. It’s a wish to return to the city!

Day 3: The Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese

The area around Villa Borghese is orderly, elegant, and lush. The enormous landscaped gardens of Villa Borghese houses statues, fountains, and world-class museums. Spend a few hours here, stopping at the café if you want a light bite.

Then walk to the Pincio Terrace for a panorama of Rome. This will be one of your most memorable days before you start your cruise from Rome.

Follow the steps down into Piazza del Popolo, a vast oval piazza that was the main gateway into ancient Rome at one time. The piazza is home to Raphael’s famed Chigi Chapel inside the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. The church is used in one of the scenes from Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons.

Via Condotti and Rome’s center of haute couture to the Spanish Steps

From here, make your way between Via Margutta and Via del Babuino. You’ll find the best of the art and antique shops.

And then sidestep towards Via Condotti before heading to the Spanish Steps. On Via Condotti, you will find the chicest shops in the center of Rome’s haute couture. Follow the road leading to Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps for those iconic photo moments. Finish your day with an evening in this area, where you can take your pick of restaurants.

You are walking a lot today, but this area is worth taking your time in. Pick up a guidebook before you leave home. That way, you will not miss gems such as Galleria Borghese and Keats-Shelley Memorial along the way.

This day out highlighting the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese also works well in reverse.

For a new appreciation of the Spanish Steps, get there early in the morning before the tourists arrive. We mean at sunrise if you can. Take time to enjoy this area in peace, quiet, and sunshine.

Day 4: Ancient Rome, Vittoriano, and the Colosseum

Experiencing The Eternal City before your cruise would not be complete unless you place yourself in its ancient past. Start with the Victor Emmanuel II National Monument or simply Vittoriano , mesmerizing in its sheer size and luminosity.

Dedicated to the memory of Italy’s first King, the monument Vittoriano houses art galleries and the tomb of the unknown soldier. If you want to skip seeing the art, buy a ticket and climb the stairs to the first level. From there, take the glass elevator to the top. Here you are rewarded with the best panoramic view in Rome.

A step back in time to Ancient Rome at The Colosseum and Roman Forum

In the heart of ancient Rome, visit The Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and Musei Capitolini. There is so much more, but with these four focal points, you will experience the best of Rome’s ancient history.

Use a guidebook so you don’t miss anything. For example, it’s easy to miss the cremation site of Julius Caesar if you don’t know where to look. Better still, book a guided tour .

Most good tour operators use local guides, and tours last about 3 hours. Wear good walking shoes and long sleeves to beat the sun. Fill up your water bottle from the drinking fountain outside the main entrance to the Colosseum. Many of these fountains are dotted around the city, and the water is good to drink.

Hop-on/hop-off bus from Circus Maximum to the city center

At the end of your tour, walk towards Circus Maximus. If you are there in the summer, visit the nearby Rose Garden, Roseto di Roma Capitale, where all the flowers bloom. From Circus Maximum, hop onto one of the open-top Big Bus tours or hop-on/hop-off buses. They also depart from outside the Colosseum.

After walking so much, it’s a perfect way to get back to the city center. Head to Piazza del Popolo and make your way through the crowds for some local Italian food.

Many attractions in Rome are free on the first Sunday of each month. That includes the Colosseum. This area of ancient Rome gets very crowded, so get there early at opening time if you can.

How to get from central Rome to Civitavecchia Port

To get to the Port of Civitavecchia for your cruise from Rome, you have these alternatives:

Private Transfer

If you are more than two people, we recommend booking a private transfer before you leave home. It is the most expensive option but good if you can share the cost with your fellow travelers. Tell your supplier when you want to check in at the cruise port. They will calculate your pickup time from the hotel to get you there in good time.

Ask your hotel about pre-booking a cab. Allow plenty of time to get to the port. Traffic and queues are unpredictable, especially in the high season. Taxis charge a flat rate to establish this with your driver before you start. The cost is high – around 120 euros from the city to the port.

Traveling by train from Rome’s Termini station to the train station at Civitavecchia is easy and will save you money.

You can buy train tickets at the train station for around 5 euros per person. There are both ticket windows (be prepared to queue) and automated ticket machines. If you have a paper ticket, you must remember to get your ticket stamped at a machine before boarding the train. Otherwise, you risk a heavy fine on board. You do not need to do this if you buy your train ticket in advance and download it onto your phone.

There are shops, cafes, a tourist office, and even a shopping center on Termini station’s lower floor.

Arriving at Civitavecchia Port

Arrival by transfer/taxi.

You need to get dropped off at the port service center, Largo Della Pace. It is the main terminal for all shuttle buses that will take you to your cruise ship. The shuttle buses are all free of charge within the port.

Arrival by train

From Civitavecchia train station to the service center at the port, Largo Della Pace, a local bus costs about 2 euros. The journey is 10 minutes, and buses leave every 15 minutes. Tickets can be bought from inside the train station. Alternatively, you could walk from Civitavecchia train station to Largo Della Pace to save money. It is about 1.5km and takes about 15 minutes. But remember you have your luggage too so it could be tiring. Taxis can be hard to find from the train station, but this is an option if you succeed.

How to get from Civitavecchia port to central Rome to continue your cruise vacation

If you plan to spend more time in Rome after your cruise, it is now easier than ever to travel by train.

The new Civitavecchia Express train and the Civitavecchia Port Link bus service means your transfer from your cruise ship to central Rome is smoother than ever.

2 thoughts on “Cruise from Rome – the essential guide”

Sarah, Thank you so much for this very informative article about how to navigate Rome. I will be starting a transatlantic cruise out of Rome in December 2023 with three of my family members. Would love to spend a day or two prior to sailing. My only concern is what to do with our luggage while meandering through the city. I can’t imagine using public transportation to get on and off the trains or buses with our suitcases in tow. I am thinking of perhaps storing the luggage at the airport while in town. But that means having to go back to the airport retrieving it and then going to the port. Maybe the answer is to have a shuttle from the hotel pick us up from the airport. You indicated that there are several hotels that would provide this service. I will continue to do some research. You provided excellent information. Thanks. Ilse Colvin

Hello, and thank you for your kind comments! How exciting you will be spending time in Rome with your family before your cruise starts. The most convenient way to travel from the airport, especially with a lot of luggage, is to ask the hotel if they offer a shuttle service, use an official airport taxi, or book a private transfer. We list the suppliers we use and trust in our Resources section . If you arrive at the hotel before your check-in time, the concierge should be able to store your luggage safely for you while you explore the city. I recommend contacting your hotel directly a few weeks before you travel to inform them of your estimated arrival time, perhaps they may be able to offer an earlier check-in time, but this isn’t guaranteed. If you decide to book a private transfer, you will find information on how to do this on our resources page linked above. If you prefer to store your luggage in the city, one option is to book luggage storage with UseBounce, which offers different locations throughout the city.

Daniele De Rossi will continue on as Roma 's manager for next season and the "foreseeable future," the Serie A club's owners said on Thursday.

De Rossi, who was appointed in January on a deal that ran until the end of the season, replaced Jose Mourinho and took over a side that was ninth in the table.

Under the former Italy international, Roma have climbed to fifth in the standings following a seven-game unbeaten run in the league.

They have also reached the Europa League quarterfinals, in which they have a 1-0 advantage over opponents AC Milan heading into Thursday's second leg.

"After meeting yesterday afternoon with Daniele De Rossi, we are delighted to announce he will continue as head coach of AS Roma after this season and for the foreseeable future," club owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said in a joint statement .

"In his short tenure as head coach, the positive impact that his leadership has brought to the entire club has told its own story.

"Daniele leads with respect and courage, while his strength and deep-rooted belief in the club are truly aligned with Roma's values, city and unparalleled fans."

The club did not provide any details on the length of De Rossi's contract.

After their Europa League clash with Milan, Roma take on Bologna in Serie A on Monday.

Soccer-Napoli held to 2-2 draw by Roma after late Abraham header

Monday, 29 Apr 2024

Soccer Football - Serie A - Napoli v AS Roma - Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Naples, Italy - April 28, 2024 Napoli's Mathias Olivera (not pictured) scores their first goal as AS Roma's Mile Svilar attempts to save it REUTERS/Ciro De Luca

NAPLES, Italy (Reuters) -A wasteful Napoli were held to a 2-2 draw at home by AS Roma in Serie A on Sunday, with a late Tammy Abraham header securing a point for the visitors.

Napoli are eighth in the standings with 50 points, while Roma are fifth with 59 with four matches remaining.

The hosts dominated much of the match, with 27 shots to Roma's 10, however, a solid performance from Roma keeper Mile Svilar prevented Napoli from taking all three points.

Napoli coach Francesco Calzona said the result was disappointing.

"I'm bitter tonight. We put in a good performance and I’m happy, but if you don’t win it’s difficult," he told Sky Sports Italia.

"We made mistakes in two episodes: we knew their strength on set-pieces and I specifically added a defender. It wasn’t enough.

"I don’t know what to say. The only thing I can add is that I am happy because we showed pride and quality."

Napoli, who are nine points behind Roma in fifth place with only 12 points left to play for, could face a tough end to the season.

"The lads feel the weight of the situation, which is not great, but I must train them well and try to make them play football," Calzona said.

NAPOLI DOMINATED

Napoli controlled the game in the first half, with both Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia nearly breaking the deadlock.

Against the run of play, Roma took the lead from the penalty spot in the 59th minute, with Paulo Dybala converting after Juan Jesus tripped Sardar Azmoun.

Napoli equalised when a shot from Mathias Olivera deflected off defender Rasmus Kristensen and looped over Svilar and into the net.

The hosts took the lead in the 84th minute when Roma's Renato Sanches fouled Kvaratskhelia in the box and Osimhen converted the penalty.

Yet Roma levelled five minutes later, when Abraham headed in a flicked corner. Initially, the effort was flagged offside, but that was overruled by VAR after several minutes.

With Serie A guaranteed a fifth Champions League spot next season, sixth-placed Atalanta and Lazio in seventh are looking to reel in Roma. Lazio are four points behind, while Atalanta are two points adrift with one match in hand.

"We drew, it is not a result to throw away, but it is not the result or the performance that we wanted," Roma coach Daniele De Rossi told Sky Sports Italia.

"At times you can steal the ball off Napoli, but we then gave it back again too many times. Napoli had a lot of chances in the first half, we did better in the second, but we have to do better."

De Rossi warned his players about relaxing before the end of the season, especially with their Europa League semi-final first leg against German side Bayer Leverkusen coming up on Thursday.

"Look, we are tired, but we cannot start thinking that we’re tired and that means we can be embarrassed in the final few weeks of the season," he said.
