2020 Dodge Journey Overview

Is the 2020 dodge journey a good used suv.

The 2020 Journey is not a very good used SUV. Its cabin is full of cheap plastics, the third row is incredibly cramped, and cargo space is subpar for a midsize SUV . On top of that, this Dodge lacks the tech – including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a host of safety features – you can find in most rivals.

There are plenty of better vehicles to consider. The 2020 Kia Sorento has a nicer cabin, more tech and safety features (including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and better fuel economy. Despite being a compact SUV , the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan has more cargo room than the Journey, and it can be had with all-wheel drive.

2019 vs. 2020 Dodge Journey: What's the Difference?

Dodge’s main changes to the 2020 Journey were subtractions. The available V6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive were discontinued, and the trims were condensed from four to two, leaving just the SE Value and the Crossroad. Which Used Dodge Journey Trim Is Right for Me?

Dodge made the 2020 Journey in two trim levels: SE Value and Crossroad. Both have a 172-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive.

The SE Value is sparsely equipped, so shoppers may want to skip it in favor of the Crossroad.

  • Dodge Journey SE Value: Standard features include a 4.3-inch touch screen, a USB port, a six-speaker stereo, dual-zone manual climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
  • Dodge Journey Crossroad: The Crossroad gains an 8.4-inch touch screen, satellite radio, Bluetooth, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, second-row in-floor storage bins, a sunroof, fog lights, and alloy wheels. Some Crossroads may come with navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and/or remote start.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 65,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge offers a five-year/100,000-mile maximum care limited warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription, a Carfax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions too.

Dodge has one of the weaker CPO warranties among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Rivals such as Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford and Honda are all better.

2020 Journey Performance

How does the 2020 dodge journey drive.

The only available engine for the Journey is an underpowered four-cylinder that struggles to bring the vehicle up to speed. Additionally, the automatic transmission hesitates to downshift.

The Journey provides a mostly gentle ride, but the SUV feels unwieldy around turns and suffers from a lot of body lean. Furthermore, the steering is imprecise and requires frequent corrections. All-wheel drive is not available.

  • Engine: 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: four-speed automatic

2020 Dodge Journey Gas Mileage

This Dodge earns an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Those are typical fuel economy estimates for the midsize SUV class , which includes V6-powered rivals. For an SUV with a four-cylinder engine, however, this vehicle disappoints.

2020 Dodge Journey Towing Capacity

The Journey can tow up to 1,000 pounds when properly equipped. That’s poor for the class. There are even some compact SUVs that can tow more than that.

2020 Journey Interior

2020 journey interior quality.

Most class rivals have nicer interiors than the Journey's. Cheap and flimsy plastics make up the bulk of this vehicle’s cabin.

How Many People Does the 2020 Journey Seat?

The 2020 Journey seats seven people in three rows. The first two rows have enough head- and legroom to accommodate most adults, but the third row is tight, even for kids. Some reviewers also find that the rearmost seats are stiff.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2020 Dodge Journey?

This Dodge has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats. The second-row middle seat has a lower anchor and a tether, plus the ability to borrow a lower anchor from the passenger-side seat. There are no tethers for the third row.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for its ease of use. The tethers are hard to find and easily confused for other hardware, the middle anchor is hard to maneuver around, and the driver-side lower anchors are set deeply in the seats.

2020 Dodge Journey Features

Like other Dodge and Jeep vehicles, the Journey comes with the Uconnect infotainment system. It’s easy to use and has a responsive touch screen along with handy physical controls. However, there are fewer features than you’ll get with rivals, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 4.3-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, and a USB port
  • Available infotainment features : an 8.4-inch touch screen, a six-speaker premium stereo, satellite radio, navigation, Bluetooth, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch display
  • Additional standard features: dual-zone manual climate control, push-button start, and proximity keyless entry
  • Other available features: remote start, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof

2017 Dodge Journey Review

2017 journey new car test drive, introduction.

If you need a minivan but don't want a minivan, the Dodge Journey is for you. Except for the doors, that's basically what it is. It's the most affordable seven-seat crossover on the market. It's also the longest running without a redesign. It hasn't gotten the attention of Chrysler in the way that the Dodge Durango or the Jeeps have.  Base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder making just 173 horsepower, mated to an obsolete 4-speed automatic transmission. That powertrain is inexpensive but outdated.  Chrysler's fine 3.6-liter V6 is the upgrade engine and is necessary to move the 5000-pound Journey. It makes a that's-more-like-it 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 6-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive available.  Without modern technology, the four-cylinder engine gets 19/25 mpg City/Highway, or 21 miles per gallon Combined, while the much more powerful V6 gets an EPA-estimated 16/24/19 mpg.  Because of its ancient design, the Journey doesn't score all that well in crash tests. It gets an acceptable four stars overall from the NHTSA, but scores a Poor on the IIHS's difficult small-overlap frontal crash test.  Still, the thing is, the base Journey SE is special. There's nothing like its affordability and utility. The Hyundai Santa Fe with three rows is a better car than the Journey SE, but it's more costly. The upper-scale Journey models with the V6 are better, but no better than their competition.  For 2017, the R/T models have been rebadged as GT.

2017 Dodge Journey SE ($20,995) comes with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine cloth upholstery, power windows, dual-zone climate control, steering-wheel audio controls, storage bins in the floor, and a six-speaker sound system with 4.3-inch touchscreen. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional ($26,595). The third-row seat is an option. (Prices are MSRP and do not include destination charge.) Journey SXT ($24,895) adds foglamps, LED taillamps, and power mirrors. There's also an appearance package with black trim and 19-inch wheels. Journey Crossroad ($26,295) gets 19-inch wheels, and a 8.4-inch touchscreen. The V6 engine is optional.  Journey GT ($31,795) comes with the V6 engine, leather upholstery, upgraded audio and other features.

The Journey's slab sides are dated, as nowadays crossovers have rounded edges. The Durango is all warm and organic, but Dodge designers haven't been assigned to give the same treatment to Journey. It's angular and creased. But, looking on the positive side, the flat surfaces are easy to wash.

Unlike the outside, the Journey is smooth and swoopy inside, and easier to love. The cabin is not as modern as that of the Durango, but it's attractive enough. The instrumentation is simple, with big dials and knobs and high-quality plastics on the sculpted dash and contoured centerstack. The materials are dark, but there's enough brightwork to balance that. The fabric upholstery is rugged, and the optional leather has mesh inserts.  Where the Journey is strong, is in storage, with plenty of cubby holes and bins, including under the front passenger seat. There's a ton of cargo space, with 37 cubic feet behind the second row, 10.7 cubic feet behind the available third row, or 67 cubic feet if the seats are dropped to the flat floor.  Outward rearview vision is poor. The optional rearview camera is needed.

Driving Impression

The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is rough. Its 173 and 166 pound-feet of torque can't move the Journey very well, certainly not with the 4-speed automatic transmission that would be at home in a Caravan from the 1970s.  The smooth 3.6-liter V6 comes from the modern world, with 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and its 6-speed automatic is an appropriate match.  We saved the best for last. The Journey feels like a lower and leaner vehicle than it looks, with handling that's fairly well sorted for a vehicle this size. The steering ratio is a bit quick, but at least the old-school hydraulic steering has the right amount of resistance.  And the Journey's ride is one of its strengths, with proper damping and good roll control. The suspension loads and unloads with confidence, with no wallowing over pavement ripples that might come in the middle of a corner.

Dodge Journey delivers big passenger space and is inexpensive. It's a dated product, however, especially with the standard four-cylinder, 4-speed. The 3.6-liter V6 brings it more up to date, but there's also a lot of competition at that price point.  Sam Moses contributed to this review, with staff reports from The Car Connection.

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye Review – It’s Not A Minivan

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye Lawrencetown beach

2013 is the fifth model year in the Dodge Journey’s existence, but it’s very different from the Journey that debuted in the early part of 2008. It doesn’t look that different on the outside, but its much improved interior and thoroughly advanced V6 engine, working with the flexible seven-seat layout, make the Journey a more compelling value-based purchase.

Yet this Journey, the one Chrysler Canada delivered to GCBC Towers in June, is a heavily optioned R/T Rallye. Not surprisingly, the proletarian roots of a vehicle that was intended to be, at least in part, a crossover successor to the Dodge Caravan minivan crawl through the cracks and are made more apparent when it costs as much as a BMW X1.

Like a blonde whose brunette roots come through days after her salon-quality dye job, the Journey’s blue collar origins are obvious but not all-consuming. Yes, the Journey traces its foundational elements back to the unloved Dodge Caliber, but using that knowledge to arrive at a quick verdict would be to ignore much of what the Journey R/T Rallye brings to the table.

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye flowers

Top of the class? No, it’s not. Nevertheless, there are reasons why thousands of buyers in the United States – and especially Canada – consider the Journey to be an appealing combination of size strength; at the right price. As in GCBC’s recent write-ups on the Mazda 6 and Ford Focus ST , this review of the 2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye examines two sides of the same coin: the reasons why so many consumers would choose the Journey R/T Rallye, and the reasons why so many wouldn’t. The latter comes first.

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Mazda CX-5. You read promotional material about sport suspensions, and then you experience them. All too often, an allegedly improved chassis proves to be disappointing. That doesn’t prove to be the case in the R/T Rallye, not at all. But it’s no CX-5. The key difference lies in the CX-5’s interactivity, its ability to tell you what’s going on, and the swiftness with which it can change direction. Where the CX-5 can be tossed around with an alarming amount of abandon, the Journey can power into, hold on through, and power out of a corner in a way that will impress its driver, discomfit passengers in the second row, and strain third row occupants. It’s a level unreached by most small crossovers, but it’s not as fun as what you’ll experience in the feelsome two-row Mazda. The major letdown is the Journey’s steering, with its broad dead spot on centre and the way it feels disconnected from reality when you’ve applied plenty of lock.

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Ford Explorer. Above $35,000, the Journey R/T Rallye offers more equipment – heated steering wheel, rear DVD, navigation, backup camera – than you will find in most properly midsize SUVs and crossovers. But sacrifices will have to be made elsewhere, most notably in the size of the cabin.

The Ford Explorer, which isn’t the most spacious of midsize crossovers, provides 23% more passenger space, nearly double the amount of space behind the third row, 11% more space with the third row folded, and 19% more space with both rear rows folded.

It’s not an abstract comparison: you can have a decently equipped Explorer for the price of a Journey R/T Rallye. Access to the third row is fine in the Dodge, as the second row slides and tilts forward, but once seated you’ll find that the amount of knee room isn’t matched by the foot space, which is constricted. As is the case with the Mazda 5, the knowledge that little luggage can be toted with seven people aboard is depressing. The Journey is a five or maybe a six-seater for travelling; a seven seater only if its owner has no intention to carry stuff.

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Dodge Grand Caravan. You know the Grand Caravan is the properly big Dodge family vehicle, but it’s hard to grasp just how much space you’ll lose in the Journey unless you park them side by side, walk in one sliding door, out the other, and into the Journey through the aperture created by its front-hinged doors. If the Journey’s comparative lack of space doesn’t put you off, its all-around lack of a certain something will. Call it solidity, structural stability, an overarching sense of permanence: whatever it is, the Journey doesn’t have it in the same quantities as Dodge’s two best products, the Ram pickup and the Grand Caravan.

Parking lots reveal this in the worst way. Turn from a road that slopes downward into a driveway which slopes upward and then traverse a few speedbumps and the Journey produces that scrunch  sound you didn’t think you’d hear in anything other than a Chrysler 200 Convertible. A squark  here, a groan  there, it never feels like the latest efforts from Chrysler’s minivans, or the minivans crafted by Honda or Toyota. The R/T’s materials aren’t a letdown after the Grand Caravan, but the seating position had me feeling like I was falling through the windshield. The centre armrest felt like it was built to deter my elbow from resting. Simply put, the Grand Caravan is better at being a minivan than the Journey is at being a small crossover.

On the contrary…

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Mazda CX-5. The CX-5, like the CR-V, RAV4, Tucson, Rogue, and Tiguan, isn’t even available with more than 200 horsepower. (They don’t offer third rows, either. Nor do the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, non-XL Hyundai Santa Fe, upcoming Jeep Cherokee, Kia Sportage, and Subaru Forester.) Better than the 3.6L’s total output is the way in which it makes its power. There’s just enough low-down torque to impress, but the way the Pentastar V6 gets into a groove as the revs rise is the really admirable aspect.

There’s a penalty for this: the Journey V6’s city fuel economy is way down at 16 mpg, same as the Ram V6 with its 8-speed automatic. Indeed, the Journey is rated at 24 mpg on the highway, equal to the CX-5’s city rating, which is down six mpg from the CX-5’s 30 mpg highway rating. But one would hope the CX-5 and its like-minded two-row crossovers would use much less fuel – they’re much  less powerful. In both mundane and extraordinary circumstances, they feel it, too.

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye rear three quarter

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Ford Explorer. The Explorer feels and handles bigger, because it is bigger. Bigger isn’t always better. The Explorer is five inches longer, seven inches wider, four inches taller, and nearly 500 pounds heavier. Yet it makes do with just seven extra horsepower and five fewer lb-ft of torque. And while specifications suggest a huge gap in interior space between the bigger Explorer and smaller Journey, the atmosphere of space in the Journey, with its high roof and expansive second row, shrinks that gap. You’d pay for extra space, as well. At the same price point, an Explorer XLT won’t have this Journey R/T Rallye’s leather-clad seats, backup camera, heated steering wheel, 19-inch wheels, or all-wheel-drive.

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Transfer truck

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Dodge Grand Caravan. Say what you will about the Grand Caravan’s people and cargo-hauling abilities. It’s still a minivan. It feels really heavy. It’s challenging to park. And  it’s still a minivan, the best type of vehicle in the world, but one that very few people want. The Journey, propelled by the same V6 as the Grand Caravan, feels wonderfully powerful above 3500 rpm, it handles in such a way as to not feel heavy, it doesn’t feel vast in a small parking lot, and it’s not a minivan. With built-in booster seats, a second row that moves easily to allow third row access and to enable parents to reach squabbling toddlers, and third row seating that folds effortlessly, the Journey is a semi-minivan, without the minivan image.

Lacking a semester at finishing school, the 2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye attempts to make up for what it’s missing with features and horsepower. The extent to which you desire red-stitched leather seats and 283 horses will define the degree to which the Journey has succeeded in making up for its deficiencies.

A Journey RT should be compared to a 3 row smaller outside-bigger inside RAV4 from the used lot, not an Explorer. I know, I crossed shopped.

Or perhaps the Santa Fe XL or Sorrento.

First time Chysler buyer Ontario Canada

Hi guys: This is my 4th report on this vehicle. The car is now 10 years old and has 140,000 miles on it. Our car has the 3.6 Pentastar, 3rd row seating, 8.4 inch Uconnect system, roof racks, premium sound system, DVD player, rear air conditioning, push button start, heated seats and steering wheel, back up camera and is front wheel drive only. Engine, transmission and air conditioner have been excellent. Never a problem. 30 miles to the gallon on the highway. Many suspension components have been replaced and vehicle is starting to rust around the rear wheel well. Uconnect has had issues. All in all a very reliable and very comfortable vehicle. Highly recommend it.

Great car, very comfortable, plenty of room

I bought my 2013 journal avp brand new, and now have 123,000 miles on it. Haven't even changed brakes yet. Still original brakes on it. Just regular maintenance, had minor issues, wheel bearing, throttle body, and new battery and tires. Great car, comfortable. 4 cylinder engine is good on gas but very sluggish. Definitely would recommend V6 engine.

Electrical issues

After purchasing used 2013 Journey SXT I had issue with starting.Would start day after setting but if didn’t start for multiple days battery was dead.Took to my mechanic and they couldn’t figure out why this was occurring and advised taking to a dealership. They ran testing for 6 weeks(ridiculous amount of time)but didn’t care if problem was fixed. They advised that they found issue and replaced an electrical control box which cost me $900.00.To my dismay I found after several days problems still exists.Called dealer and they said bring it back and they would look into problem again. When asked if I would be charged again they said yes.Highly recommend staying away from Dodge as I plan to do in the future!!

I love my Dodge Journey

I love my Dodge Journey. It’s the first SUV I’ve ever owned and it’s awesome. It’s roomy and offers third row seating. I made the transition from a mini van to this vehicle and I couldn’t be more pleased with my choice.

I love my new car. Runs great. And it is super clean inside and out. Low miles too! I am very happy with my purchase

Problems starting, 1 month ownership

I recently traded in my car for the 2013 dodge journey RT and I have has nothing but problems with it. The car randomly decides it does not want to start and has left me stranded. The brakes lock up, a red light blinks, and a message pops up (service AWD. ) I have tried putting the car into neutral, and then starting it. I have tried pressing the button 5 times and restarting it. The issues does generally resolve itself, You just have to wait anywhere from 5min to 3 hours. The car just got a brand new battery, but the mechanic said it was a battery issue, apparently the voltage in the battery was fine, but it failed the battery life test. (OK) so another new battery was put in. Now I wish I never traded in my reliable vehicle. I was excited about the leather and the sunroof and the heated seats and the navigation. None of those perk are work paying for a hunk of junk you can rely on. No I am hooped I stuck with this crappy vehicle. I wish Chrysler would resolve this common issue that they have had for a very long time. I wish I had done more research before buying thus peace of shut that randomly leaves me stranded for hours on end.

Brakes! Purchased the showroom model (at a slight discount) but that was in 2013 and yes the pads are now coming due for the first time but the rotors?! Did Daimler/Chrysler make these things outta Kryptonite? Not a scar/score on 'em in 7 years and looks like all I'm gonna have to do is hit the pads. Also purchase of an extended warranty has been nothing short of a blessing in disguise! Guess one of the fortunate ones with this car purchase. Just a quick unique note, back in 2013, November time frame, purchased the car and a week after was fired from job. She's ours now and got the title in the lock box. All take care and God Bless.

2018 Dodge Journey: It's Still Here

In its ninth year, this bigger-than-most crossover still sells against much fresher competition.

land vehicle, vehicle, car, sport utility vehicle, dodge journey, compact sport utility vehicle, automotive design, luxury vehicle, family car, crossover suv,

The Journey comes in base SE, mainstream SXT, stylish Crossroad, and well-equipped GT trims. A 173-hp 2.4-liter inline-four with a four-speed automatic transmission (there’s a sign of how old it is—only four ratios!) is standard on all front-drive Journeys except the GT. All-wheel-drive models and the front-drive GT come with a 283-hp 3.6-liter V-6 bolted to a six-speed automatic. For this review, we sampled an AWD Crossroad V-6 model.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Sport utility vehicle, Compact sport utility vehicle, Bumper, Automotive design, Dodge journey, Rim, Family car,

What’s New: The Journey is like an oldies radio station that you listen to because you know all the words to the songs. For 2017, the V-6–powered GT model replaced the ambitiously named R/T and featured a stiffer suspension, red-stitched leather seats, 19-inch aluminum wheels, and a premium sound system. All 2018 Journey models now come standard with a third-row seat—the five-seat version has been dropped—which technically makes it a seven-passenger vehicle, so long as the aft occupants aren’t fully grown. Also new for 2018, Dodge has expanded the availability of the popular Blacktop appearance package to all Journey models including the base SE; it brings a black grille, black front-fascia trim, black-painted aluminum wheels, black roof rails, and black mirrors. Last year’s Crossroad Plus trim has been dropped.

What We Like: When Chrysler was developing the Journey, it borrowed some designers from its minivan program who managed to imbue the crossover with clever storage solutions. All Journeys feature hidden compartments big enough to stow larger items like cameras, tablets, laptops, and such out of sight under the second-row footwells and beneath the rear cargo floor. The 283-hp 3.6-liter V-6 delivers decent performance, especially next to competitors in the Journey’s under-$30K price category. The 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system that’s standard on the Crossroad and the GT (but not available on the SE or the SXT) is one of the simplest and easiest-to-use systems out there, especially at the price.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Motor vehicle, Center console, Speedometer, Dodge journey, Steering wheel, Executive car, Subcompact car,

What We Don’t Like: Even though Dodge says it sells slightly more four-cylinder/four-speed Journeys than V-6/six-speed versions, we’d leave those slow, noisy four-bangers to populate the rental fleets. Neither the four- nor the six-cylinder is particularly thrifty at the pump. Transmission shift quality—even with the newer six-speed—can be inconsistent, mixing abrupt gearchanges with stretchy ones. As with many compact and mid-size crossovers with third-row seats, the Journey’s are useless for adult habitation. This Dodge drives like what it is—a mildly updated 10-year-old design. That said, it’s one of the last vehicles with hydraulically assisted steering, so weighting and effort buildup actually feel more organic than in the electrically assisted systems in more modern crossovers.

Verdict: Joey Chestnut can eat more hot dogs, but the Journey has more stash space.

We traveled from Canada to Seattle by ferry with a car for $150. After 5 ½ hours, I wished I'd just left my vehicle at home.

  • I travel between Canada and the US often, and I recently took a route that used a car ferry.
  • With two passengers and a car, the trip cost about $150, and it took about five and a half hours.
  • I don't necessarily think having your car adds to the trip, so I'd take a passenger boat next time.

Insider Today

Nearly 400,000 people travel between Canada and the US daily, and one of the best parts of living in Victoria, British Columbia, is its relative proximity to the state of Washington.

It's common for locals to spend a weekend in Seattle to catch a sports game, see a concert, or do some cross-border shopping.

But even though the cities are pretty close, getting there can be a headache if you don't know what you're doing. Victoria, BC , is located on an island, so unless you're flying, you'll need to take a boat.

Under ideal conditions, traveling there with your car takes at least four to five hours. But when you factor in ferry times, potential delays due to weather, border wait times , traffic, and stopping for gas, it can easily become an eight-hour journey.

Recently, a friend and I took the car ferry between Victoria to Vancouver to get to Seattle. Here's how it went, and what you need to know before booking a trip.

There are several options for getting to mainland Washington from Victoria, BC.

dodge journey review canada

The Victoria Clipper offers the fastest direct route between Victoria and Seattle, but it's a passenger-only ferry.

If you want to take your vehicle, you'll either need to take the Blackball "Coho" Ferry to Port Angeles, Washington, or BC Ferries to Vancouver and drive two to three hours to Seattle.

We wanted to stop at Seattle Premium Outlets in Tulalip, Washington (about an hour outside of Seattle). And since we'd be stateside, we'd have the opportunity to stop at Trader Joe's to stock up on our favorite American snacks.

Having a car would make both pit stops easier, so we decided to book tickets on BC Ferries.

Tickets vary depending on your vehicle, the number of passengers, and their ages. Vehicles under 20 feet cost 67.40 Canadian dollars, or about $49, each way. But that cost doesn't include the driver or any other passengers.

Adult fares are 19.10 CAD each way, so our total for one way on the ferry was 105.6 CAD.

If you’re traveling on a weekend, make a reservation and get there early.

dodge journey review canada

Since we were taking our car, we needed to factor in the driving time to the ferry dock in Swartz Bay, located about 30 to 45 minutes outside of Victoria.

BC Ferries serves travelers from all around Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia. Weekends are typically busy, and popular sailings can sell out.

Traffic is also busier on the weekends , so give yourself plenty of time and arrive at least 30 minutes in advance.

I recommend booking a reservation online to guarantee your spot on a specific sailing. Reservations cost an extra 20 CAD, but I think it's well worth it.

Even if you have a ferry reservation, know that there's a chance your ferry can get canceled or delayed due to weather conditions — forcing you to take the next sailing in one or two hours.

There are gorgeous views throughout the ride, which made up for the lack of Wi-Fi.

dodge journey review canada

One of the things I love about taking the 90-minute boat from Victoria to Vancouver is the incredible scenery and ocean views . If the weather is decent, I recommend sitting outside.

There are picturesque islands covered in lush forests, and you may even spot a pod of whales or dolphins if you're lucky.

But if you plan on catching up on your favorite shows, download content before the ferry departs. There were no Wi-Fi options on board.

Since mobile reception is also spotty, I used the trip to catch up on work using offline apps and take in the scenery.

There’s a restaurant on the ferry, and it's actually decent.

dodge journey review canada

The onboard cafeteria offers everything from coffee and desserts to local specialties, like Nanaimo bars (a classic BC layered treat) and White Spot burgers.

Surprisingly, I don't mind the ferry food, even though it tends to be pretty expensive. If you're not sure what to get, skip the prepackaged salads and get the poutine.

At about 7 to 8 CAD, it's one of the cheapest things on the menu, and it's tasty and filling.

But if you don't want to deal with lines or crowds, you should bring your own meals.

There's pretty much always a line at the cafeteria — on my last trip, I waited 30 minutes to order a burger and a Diet Coke. The dining area is also jam-packed with fellow travelers and has the vibe of a crowded mall food court at sea.

The arrival process is pretty straightforward.

dodge journey review canada

The crew makes an announcement asking passengers to return to their cars 15 minutes before docking. That's when I usually sneak in a last-minute trip to the restroom before heading down to the car deck.

We spent about 10 minutes in the car waiting for the boat to dock before driving off.

We made our way to the Peace Arch Border Crossing.

dodge journey review canada

The ship docks in Tsawwassen, a small town outside of Vancouver, and it's about a 40-minute drive to the Canada-US border.

This drive always gives me anxiety because you can't predict how long the wait will be.

We were lucky and only had to wait about 20 minutes on this trip. But hours-long queues at the border are common, especially if there's a special event happening in Seattle like a Taylor Swift concert or a Mariner's game.

If possible, avoid driving into Seattle during rush hour.

dodge journey review canada

Traffic jams are also common on what should be a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the border crossing to Seattle, especially as you get closer to the city.

There have been previous trips where it's taken me four hours because I got stuck in a gridlock, so I always do my best to avoid getting there anywhere near rush hour.

We opted to stay overnight in Seattle.

dodge journey review canada

It's technically possible to go to Seattle for the day via the car ferry, but you'd only have a few hours in the city before turning around and catching the last ferry home at 10 p.m.

I recommend booking a one-night stay at The Edgewater — an iconic Seattle hotel with a storied history of hosting legendary musicians like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pearl Jam.

My room cost 329 CAD, and we loved the incredible waterside views, the central location, and the easy car access.

I kind of wish I didn't have my car in Seattle.

dodge journey review canada

Since we stayed in downtown Seattle, we were within walking distance of Pike Place Market , the Nordstrom flagship store, and buzzy dining options in Belltown.

We also spent an afternoon exploring the trendy Capitol Hill neighborhood, located a 10-minute drive from downtown. But we ended up taking an Uber because we knew it'd be easier than finding our own parking on the weekend.

The city has a public transit system that includes a light rail, a monorail, and streetcars, so it's pretty easy to get around without a car.

When I compare the time and money spent, I wish I’d left the car at home.

dodge journey review canada

In addition to the roundtrip ferry fare (with corresponding fees and taxes), my friend and I spent about 82 CAD on gas, bringing our total transport costs for the weekend trip to 323 CAD, not including the hotel stay .

I've taken the Victoria Clipper passenger ferry to Seattle for past trips, and although it's more expensive (344 CAD per adult, roundtrip), I found it to be a much more relaxing experience.

Our car-ferry journey took about five and a half hours, start to finish. But on the passenger ferry, I've boarded the boat at 5 p.m. and made it to my Seattle hotel by 8:15 p.m.

As a single woman who'd rather spend her weekend exploring one of her favorite cities than sitting in traffic, the passenger ferry is my preferred mode of transportation.

With that said, the car ferry has its advantages.

If you're traveling as a family or group, it's considerably cheaper than the passenger ferry. A roundtrip for a family of four on BC Ferries costs around 231 CAD, whereas the same trip on the Victoria Clipper would be around 866 CAD.

Additionally, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping or any outdoor activities outside of Seattle, it usually makes sense to have a car.

Jazz at Progress, Reading

Friday 29th January 2016

Who could resist the beguiling charms of Katya Gorrie as she opened the doors to the ‘Moscow Drug Club’, located for one night only in the dark recesses of the Progress Theatre, Reading, and invited everyone ‘to come in and have a smoke’. ‘This is the place,’ she said, ‘where the Reds play the Blues.’

Katya’s rich vocal tones, impeccable timing and perfect diction held the audience captivated as she held centre-stage with a wonderful sense of Grand Guignol theatre, and led her band of troubadours, Jonny Bruce on trumpet, accordion player Merek Salmon, Andy Bowen on guitar and Andy Crowdy on bass, on a story-telling journey through song. She drew every last drop of meaning from the lyrics of each song, while a knowing wink or the slightest gesture of the hand, gave the merest hint that … sometimes they were not quite as they first appeared.

And what stories and what songs! Can you think of a better opening number to set the feet tapping and the hands clapping than the out-and-out Latin-American gaiety of the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer collaboration, “It Had Better Be Tonight”, with its insistent refrain “Meglio stasera, baby, go, go, go”.

“When I Get Low I Get High” from the pen of the unlikely sounding, Marian Sunshine came next, before “The Gypsy With Fire In Her Shoes” served as a reminder that behind the persona of ‘Miss Peggy Lee’ lay a song-writing talent of rare and poignant beauty.

I remember “Yes, My Darling Daughter” as a bright and breezy hit for Eydie Gorme in the early 1960s, but its innuendo escaped my early-teenage understanding in those far-off days. Katya’s witty delivery left me in no doubts as to what the song was really about!

“Bei Mir Bist du Schon”, a great hit for the Andrews Sisters and a flag-waver for many bands of the Swing Era, almost brought the roof down. Driven along at breakneck speed by the tremendous ‘Two Andy’s’ rhythm team, it featured a sensational trumpet solo from Jonny Bruce. He soared into the stratosphere with thrilling knife-edge accuracy. No wonder he is such a sought-after musician. His range is absolutely remarkable, swooping from muted ‘treading-on-egg-shells’ delicacy to the highest reaches of his instrument. The edgy excitement of his playing and rich vocabulary of perfectly placed vocalised effects brought a great sense of drama to the evening.

The accordion is a sadly neglected instrument, more often seen gathering dust on the shelves of a junk-shop, than gracing its rightful place as part of a band. Merek Salmon is a master of the instrument, providing the perfect background to the sardonic humour of Belgian songwriter Jaques Brel, in “Funeral Tango”.

“Jacky”, a second Brel number, played later in the programme, featured the singing tones of Andy Crowdy’s bass in a wonderfully inventive solo.

Juan Tizol’s “Caravan”, with its curious mix of exoticism and straight-ahead swing, is rarely performed as a vocal. More’s the pity! Katya’s rendition brought the first set to a resounding close, and sent the audience scurrying to the bar, eager for refreshment to set them up for the second half.

Andy Crowdy’s rasping trombone echoed the vocal tones of the songwriter himself, as we entered the grotesque world of Tom Waits with the first number in the second set, “Tango Til They’re Sore”. By turns absolutely hilarious and as one commentator has observed, ‘awesomely gruesome’, the band revelled in the macabre sentiments of the song, creating a nightmarish cacophony of sounds with simple, but well-timed interjections from Katya’s vibraslap.

We were ‘treated’ to more samples of Waits’ dark humour later in the programme with “Temptation”, featuring one of many exquisite solos from Andy Bowen and “Jockey Full of Bourbon”. Meanwhile an invitation to meet ‘Queenie the cutie of the burlesque show’ as she performed to Johnny Mercer’s “Strip Polka” came as a welcome relief. The band members were in full voice to support Katya’s vocal.

Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me To The End Of Love” brought an instant gasp of recognition from the audience. Beautiful solos from Merek Salmon and Andy Bowen captured the haunting melancholy of the song. Jonny Bruce took another leap into the unknown with a hair-raising solo loaded with power and incredible emotional intensity.

Sadly the journey in song was drawing to a close, but not before we visited a gypsy campfire to savour Charles Aznavour’s “Two Guitars”, before taking off for the eastern Mediterranean and our final destination “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”, an irresistible tune that would have sent the audience happily on its way home but for one unresolved question; why the Moscow Drug Club?

Did Katya really meet up with her dissolute bunch of minstrels in rehab after suffering the effects of a night at ‘The Moscow Drug Club’ - a place where members ‘could have a smoke’, cock-a-snoop at authority and relax in the musical intimacy of its intoxicating atmosphere. Not quite. B.B. Gabor, an émigré Hungarian songwriter who settled in Canada, concocted the deliciously decadent lyrics in what would prove to be the encore number for the evening – what else but the “Moscow Drug Club”.

Temporary membership of ‘The Moscow Drug Club’ expired as the final notes of the tune faded away. ‘The Moscow Drug Club’ is sensational and one can only hope that membership may be renewed in the not too distant future. More used to playing large festival stages, with distant crowds, the band clearly enjoyed the convivial atmosphere of the Progress and the closeness of the audience. As ever the magnificent ‘house team’ ensured the smooth-running of the event with a welcoming smile, excellent sound and lighting, and superb service at the bar and front of house. Surely, ‘Jazz at Progress’, now entering its fourth year, must rank as a sought-after gig for Britain’s top jazz talent? Let’s also raise a glass to Steve Wellings, founder and inspirational force behind ‘Jazz in Reading’ who celebrated his birthday at the gig. Good health Steve!
