rome shopping tour

Are you enthusiastic about Italian fashion and considering embarking on a Rome shopping tour? Italy, renowned for its art, culture, and culinary prowess, has also made an indelible mark in the realm of fashion. Beyond just garments, Italian fashion emanates an enduring allure from the enchanting streets of Rome, representing a fusion of style, sophistication, and centuries-old craftsmanship.

The legacy of Italian Fashion

Italian fashion has a legacy deeply rooted in history, craftsmanship, and an innate sense of style. The post-World War II era witnessed the rise of Italian fashion houses, establishing the country as a global fashion powerhouse. Pioneering designers such as Giorgio Armani, Valentino Garavani, and Emilio Pucci brought Italian style to the forefront, emphasizing tailoring, quality fabrics, and a commitment to elegance.

Rome, the Eternal City, plays a significant role in shaping Italy’s fashion landscape. As the capital and a cultural epicenter, Rome seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, creating a fashion ethos that is both timeless and contemporary.

Distinctive features on a Rome Shopping Tour

  • Sophistication in simplicity : Roman fashion is characterized by an understated sophistication. The emphasis is on clean lines, classic silhouettes, and a refined color palette. This timeless approach to design ensures that Roman fashion withstands trends and remains relevant through the ages.
  • Artistic influence : as a city steeped in art and history, Rome’s fashion draws inspiration from its cultural surroundings. Designs often reflect the city’s architectural wonders, ancient sculptures, and artistic masterpieces. This artistic influence adds a unique and visually stunning dimension to Roman fashion.
  • Luxurious fabrics : Italian fashion, and by extension Roman fashion, is renowned for its impeccable choice of fabrics. From sumptuous silks to luxurious cashmeres and fine leathers, the emphasis on quality materials elevates each piece, contributing to the overall allure of Italian fashion.
  • Tailoring excellence : the art of tailoring is at the heart of Roman fashion. Perfectly fitted garments, attention to detail, and expert craftsmanship define the city’s approach to creating clothing. Whether it’s a tailored suit or a flowing evening gown, the precision in execution sets Roman fashion apart.

Tour overview.

Italy is famous for its fashion, so where better to discover the latest trends than with me, in the heart of Italy's capital, on my Rome fashion tour?

On this unique, tailor-fitted tour, I will walk you through Rome’s ancient streets, seeking out the capital’s main fashion houses, special boutiques, and the most sought after exponents of Italian Haute Couture.

My four-hour itinerary combines culture and history with an in-depth look into iconic Italian fashion trends, both past and present. And as a certified personal shopper, I am the perfect person to guide you through the best of what the Eternal City has to offer.

Full Itinerary

Start your rome fashion tour at museo boncompagni ludovisi.

Starting at the heart of Rome’s fashion district, the first attraction we’ll visit is the Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi . This small but atmospheric palazzo was transformed in 1995 into a museum for fashion and the decorative arts. Among its collection of over 800 clothing items and fashion accessories, we’ll find pieces by such star names as Valentino , Fausto Sarli , Renato Balestra and the Fontana Sisters .

We’ll then visit Valentino Garavani’s flagship atelier, Palazzo Valentino, situated a stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps . I like to think of Valentino’s style as capturing something of the city as a whole – his sinuosity and figure-hugging cuts echo the curls and curves of those masterpieces of the Roman Baroque you see carved on church facades throughout the city.

Next up are the legendary Spanish Steps. In the 19th-century, models would loiter around its tumbling balustrades, in eager anticipation of passing trade from passing painters. Models no longer frequent the steps, and Selfies have substituted portraits around the Spanish Steps. But Rome’s young and beautiful still gather here in the evening to meet friends and make plans for the night ahead.

Discover Bulgari, Fendi, and other household names of Italian fashion

The area around the Spanish Steps is awash with luxury brands. We’ll make our way down the famous Via dei Condotti, named after the conduits that carried water from Rome’s aqueducts to the Baths of Agrippa.

This street is the Roman equivalent of London’s Bond Street or Paris’ Rue di Faubourg-Saint-Honoré. Here you’ll find some of the biggest names of Italian fashion, from Dolce & Gabbana to Gucci; Armani to Ferragamo.

We then make a stop at the iconic Trevi Fountain

From Via dei Condotti it’s just a short stroll to the Trevi Fountain. This ostentatiously Baroque monument was immortalised in Federico Fellini’s 1960 film ‘La Dolce Vita’, where Anita Ekberg waded wistfully into its waters, pursued by the enraptured Roman journalist played by Marcello Mastroianni.

Such scenes have transformed this area of Rome’s center into a true ‘Holywood on the Tiber’. On your Rome fashion tour, I’ll walk you through the scenes, the fashion, and the sites that catapulted Rome onto the world stage as an A-List city, synonymous with style.

Venture down Rome’s Broadway and duck into Galleria Alberto Sordi

As we make our way down Via del Corso , once one of Rome’s main consular roads and now the Italian capital’s Broadway, we’ll duck into a stunning 20 th -century shopping centre, Galleria Alberto Sordi. Galleria Sordi has been the capital’s consumerist centre for over a century, housing a cornucopia of high-end stores for men’s, women’s and children’s fashion.

The next stop on our fashion tour is the Pantheon

Built under the emperor Hadrian in the early first century AD, the Pantheon is the best-preserved and most breathtaking ancient monument in Rome. But what was it built for? Why is its famous dome hollow in the centre? And why did the Pantheon survive when almost all of Rome’s other pagan temples were destroyed? Find out all this and more on this Rome fashion history tour!

Your Rome fashion tour winds up in the stunning Campo de’ Fiori

The “Square of Flowers,” as it means in Italian, is an intriguing evening spot. Having done away with its daily farmers’ market, it becomes a buzzing hangout spot for those caught up in Rome’s famous nightlife – ‘ la movida romana ’. Locals and tourists intermingle, spilling out of traditional bars and soaking in the city’s unique evening atmosphere. It’s also around this fashionable hotspot that you’ll find a wealth of artisan and individual boutiques, just waiting to be explored as you discover their treasures.

At the end of your Rome fashion history tour, I can recommend one of my favourite places to go for aperitivo , an Italian tradition the world would do well to adopt. What better way to end an evening of fun and fashion than right in the centre of the Eternal City’s night-time action!

Your Rome fashion history tour can be fully customized in case there’s something specific you’d like to see. You can also combine it with other tours and experiences I offer: pack in maximum culture into your day with an Vatican & Sistine Chapel tour or immersing yourself in the city of the Caesars on my Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill tour .

What to Wear in Rome for Women & Men: Complete Guide (By Season!)

Trying to decide what to wear in Rome can be a surprisingly daunting task, especially if you’ve never been there before!

The Eternal City is known for its scorching summers, fashionable residents, and hundreds of interesting sights that lend themselves to long days of sightseeing (some of which come with a dress code–looking at you, St. Peter’s Basilica).

If you’re trying to put together your Rome packing list, let us help: Rome is one of our favorite cities in the world, and we have visited the city in all seasons, for up to a month at a time per trip.

Admittedly, this guide of what to wear in Rome is weighted heavily toward the female side of things–sorry, gentlemen–but we throw in some packing tips for the men as well, so guys, feel free to skip down to the men’s section.

Table of Contents

What to Know Before Packing for Rome

The most important tip about what to wear in rome, what to wear in rome during spring: march, april, may, what to wear in rome during summer: june, july, august, what to wear in rome during fall: september, october, november, what to wear in rome during winter: december, january, february, what to wear in rome for men, accessories everyone should pack for rome year-round, what not to wear in rome, romans tend to dress a bit on the formal side..

No suits or cocktail dresses required, of course, but crisp, tailored, intentional outfits are the norm in Rome.

Loose or ill-fitting clothing, ripped or stained items, and anything athleisure will look out of place in Rome (except perhaps near the Colosseum or Vatican City, where you’ll almost exclusively be surrounded by other tourists).

What to wear in Rome: three Roman men standing in front of a shop

If you want to blend in, dress for the season, not the weather (within reason).

For example, by early November in Rome, you’ll see trench coats start to show up on the locals–even if the temperature still only calls for a light jacket.

You clearly don’t need to follow this tendency to the letter, but keep in mind when making your Rome packing list that the month you travel matters just as much as the weather.

Many religious sights, including St. Peter’s Basilica, require modest dress.

That means no shoulders and no knees for both men and women. Be sure to bring at least one church-appropriate outfit with you, and if you think you’ll be visiting churches and catacombs on more than one day, consider throwing a scarf or cardigan in your day bag so that you’re able to transform into a church-ready outfit in an instant.

4 Days in Rome Itinerary: Piazza Mattei

Comfortable shoes are an absolute must.

Visiting Rome requires a lot of walking, and a surprising amount of that walking is done on non-smooth surfaces–think of exploring the winding cobblestone streets of Trastevere or climbing Palatine Hill, for example.

Leave the heels at home, and resist the temptation to break in new, beautiful Italian shoes during your trip to Rome if you can. I definitely failed to follow my own advice once and broke in a pair of new Italian boots by walking around Florence, and it was ridiculously painful (the same boots sadly got lost in Naples a year later–RIP boots, I still miss you).

I’ve been wearing these shoes in Europe during the summer lately and love them. Boat shoes are also a great option, and Converse are popular with backpackers and travelers along the tourist trail. For winter a warm waterproof boot is a better option.

Cheesy, but true: the absolute, 100% most important thing to consider when deciding what to wear in Rome is knowing what you will be comfortable in!

The most fashionable outfit in the world can still add unnecessary stress to your trip if it isn’t a style you’re comfortable wearing, your shoes pinch, the fabric on your shirt itches… you get the picture.

Ultimately, whether a random Italian you’ll never see again thinks you dress a bit strange (trust me, it’s not the weirdest getup they’ve seen on a tourist) doesn’t matter a single bit in the grand scheme of your trip, so don’t overthink it!

That being said… when in Rome, it can be an absolute blast to do as the Romans do, and it can enhance your trip if you feel at ease and like you (somewhat) blend in the city.

And, while none of us foreigners will ever truly pass for Roman, avoiding the college-t-shirt-and-baseball-cap look can cut down on the number of times you’re hassled by scam artists or energetic salesmen in the city and the number of times that you’re targeted for pickpocketing.

You’ll also sometimes get better service in places like restaurants in exchange for dressing well in Rome, which is a nice plus!

2 Days in Rome: Couple Inside Colosseum

If there’s one word to keep in mind when deciding what to wear in Rome during spring, it’s layers: you’ll likely experience some warm days during your trip to Rome, but especially early in spring, cool nights are still common.

I adore wearing dresses in Rome: they’re fashionable, they’re easy to make into a put-together outfit, they’re simple to pack, and they’re fun to wear.

Since this is Rome, neutral options will always be popular, but pops of bright color are great–Romans aren’t nearly as known for their love of black as, say, Parisians or New Yorkers. Think something like this or this .

Spring evenings in Rome can still be quite cool, so consider bringing a couple of pairs of tights with you to layer under your dresses as needed–they’re very popular in Rome!

Kate Storm in a gray dress looking away from the camera in the Galleria Borghese--this dress is a great example of what to wear in Rome Italy

For tops, choose something with a bit more to it than a basic t-shirt–while you can stay quite casual, think something with a bit of structure or pretty detailing, like this or this .

If they’re your style, spring is a great time to break out pretty skirts like this in Rome–remember to pack tights as I mentioned above!

Shorts aren’t really popular for women in Rome, especially outside of the hot and muggy summer months.

Dark, skinny jeans are always in style and make a great combo with a brighter top–I have this pair and absolutely adore them.

What to wear in Rome: crowd at the Spanish Steps

Spring is a great time to wear booties or ankle boots like these in Rome–really, they’re popular year-round in the city and do a great job of looking fashionable while also protecting your feet and being comfortable to wear.

Substantial flats are also an option, but make sure that they have good arch support! The last thing you want is aching feet while in Rome.

If you’re more of a comfort-over-fashion person, a sleek, subtle pair of tennis shoes like these won’t stand out much with jeans.

Kate Storm walking through Orange Garden in Rome Italy while wearing a red dress--a fun example of what to pack for Rome Italy

Winter may be over, but you’ll still want a jacket during a spring trip to Rome: consider something simple and easy to pack like this , and opt for a neutral color–you can never go wrong with black!

Accessories

Definitely pack a bright scarf for a pop of color when choosing what to wear in Rome in spring!

Summer in Rome is scorching hot, so come prepared to sweat, and be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen .

There’s no getting around it: summer in Rome is both hot and humid, and while there’s never exactly a bad time to be in Rome, we’ll never personally plan to travel there on purpose in the months of July in August–so if that’s when you’re coming, plan ahead and pack well.

Think light and airy dresses like this . I’d recommend bringing at least one dress that hits below the knee so you can visit the Vatican and other churches around Rome without worrying about the dress code–plus maxi dresses are so photogenic anyway, and a great way to feel dressed up in Rome with minimal effort!

Kate Storm in a blue dress standing next to a Vespa on a street in Rome Italy--you'll see plenty of streets like this during your Rome vacation!

While you’ll still want some detailing to your tops during summer in Rome, you’ll also want to focus on staying cool: light fabrics are key!

Don’t even think about wearing jeans in Rome during the summer: it’s simply too hot. If you’re most comfortable in pants, opt for lighter fabrics.

However, skirts are also a great option during the summer in Rome. Skirts like this and this are fashionable and easy to wear in the city.

You won’t see a lot of Roman women wearing shorts in the city–at the beach yes, in Rome itself no–but so many tourists will be wearing shorts in Rome during the summer that if you absolutely want to bring a pair or two, you won’t stick out like a sore thumb. Personally, I very rarely, if ever, wear shorts in Rome.

Rome Itinerary: Bike propped up next to a house in Rome

Cute, strappy sandals look wonderful in Rome, but unfortunately, many pairs don’t offer a lot of support to your feet, which you absolutely need! During last spring and summer in Italy, I opted for these shoes  and I didn’t feel like I stuck out and my feet were extremely comfortable.

If you opt for sandals, go with something a bit more support, like these .

You certainly won’t need a jacket to wear in Rome outside during the summer, but Italians love to turn the air conditioning way, way up, especially on trains.

Consider packing a light jacket–I usually bring something like this –in the summer to throw in your bag and use in cold museums and trains.

You’ll definitely want to wear a hat in Rome during the summer! It’ll keep the sun off your face, keep you comfortable, and make styling your hair easy. Something like this is a great option, but if you don’t feel like shopping before you leave, you can find souvenir hats of every quality and price all over Rome.

Wondering what to wear in Rome during the fall? Fall–particularly late September through early November–is our favorite time of year to travel in Italy, and Rome is no exception.

Weather varies dramatically in Rome during these months, with September often still producing warm temperatures that feel more like summer, with more rain, clouds, and cooler temperatures becoming the norm as the season edges into November.

Cozy dresses in neutral colors and jewel tones are the perfect option for Rome in the fall! I personally love wearing dark red in Rome and think that dresses like this , paired with tights depending on the weather, look amazing against the colorful buildings in the city.

Black is also extremely popular of course, and you can’t go wrong with a look like this .

Like in spring, if you’re packing for a fall trip to Rome, be sure to throw in a few pairs of tights to layer under your dresses. You’ll blend in more, stay warm, and look great all at the same time.

Pretty tops in neutral colors are perfect wearing in Rome in the fall. Think something like this .

Like in spring, dark, skinny jeans are always in style in Rome and make a great option when you’re deciding what to wear in Rome during the fall. I love this pair and happily pack them for Rome.

Skirts like this layered with tights are also adorable and easy to wear.

You can sum up what footwear to wear in Rome during the fall in one word: boots.

A pair of dark brown or black boots, either short or tall depending on your style, will blend in perfectly in Rome while also being comfortable. Just make sure you bring a pair that is already broken in and, as always in Rome, avoid heels!

I generally wear a pair similar to these in Rome during the fall and am always comfortable.

2 Days in Rome Itinerary: Girls in Cafe

Jacket/Coat

By November in Rome, you’ll start to see the locals breaking out their trench coats, even if the weather is still mild!

I wouldn’t bring a particularly thick one, but a lightweight trench coat like this is an easy way to look fashionable and pulled together during late fall in Rome, and will keep you warm during the cooler nights.

Want to blend in without packing too much in Rome during the fall? Bring all the cozy scarves (and then once you’re there, shop for even more!).

Quartiere Coppedè Back of Arched Entryway.

Rome’s winters are generally mild and wet, with December clocking in as the rainiest month of the year and January the coldest (but since average high temperatures only get down to about 55 degrees Fahrenheit or 13 degrees Celsius, it’s really not much to worry about).

Still–most of us don’t spend our days at home walking around outside sightseeing all day, and it can get surprisingly chilly to stay outside in those temperatures for long periods of time!

Plus, since Romans tend to dress according to the season, you’ll see plenty of traditional winter wear like coats and boots on the street.

Warm sweater dresses like this one and this one , layered with fleece-lined leggings , are a great way to stay warm during winter in Rome without compromising on style!

Cozy sweaters in dark and neutral colors look fabulous during winter in Rome. Consider packing something like this .

4 Days in Rome Itinerary: Steps of Piazza di Spagna with Girl at Dawn

Not much has changed from other seasons here: if you’re deciding what to wear in Rome during the winter and prefer pants to dresses and skirts, dark, skinny jeans are an easy go-to ( this is my beloved pair ).

A fan of skirts? Much like spring and fall, a skirt with a layer underneath (in the winter, I’d recommend fleece-lined leggings ) is a great choice–aim for heavier, warmer fabrics like this .

All the boots! Winter in Rome is a great time to wear beautiful boots with all your outfits. If rain is in the forecast, choose something waterproof. If not, leather is always a tried-and-true staple. A pair similar to these is a great basic choice, and similar to what I wear in Rome during the winter.

Cozy pea coats are the way to go when you’re deciding what jacket to wear in Rome during winter–think warm but not overly heavy, in a neutral color (black is by far the most popular color for coats in Rome).

Definitely choose something you’re comfortable having in all your photos because it’s likely to show up in just about all of them!

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BuEjJq5AKnm/]

In addition to a warm scarf , you’ll want to bring a cozy hat and a good pair of gloves. If you plan to be snapping photos and videos on your smartphone when in Rome (who isn’t?), I recommend choosing a glove compatible with smartphone usage– these e tip gloves are a great choice.

Since men’s clothing tends to be much simpler and includes less variation than women’s clothing, I’m going to roll all seasons together here–if you’re a man packing for Rome, this is what to wear!

If you’re the formal type, casual button-up shirts won’t look out of place in Rome!

If you’re visiting during summer and you’re more the t-shirt type, that’s fine–Jeremy is and never sticks out much–but opt for crisp, well-kept shirts, preferably with a little bit of structure or detailing to them– like this , for example. In other words, casual is fine, but avoid the I-wore-this-to-the-gym look.

Avoid tank tops–they’re not acceptable to be worn into churches, and they’re not a popular look for men in Rome.

During fall and winter, well-fitted sweaters are a great choice to wear in Rome.

What to wear in Rome for men: man in Trastevere in front of restaurant

Dark, well-fitted jeans like these and a pair of chinos are both great options for men visiting Rome year-round.

In the heat of summer, you can opt for tailored shorts if you can’t stand the heat (it’s brutal, seriously)–you’ll be far from alone, though they aren’t the most popular option among Italian men. If you’re going out at night to a nicer venue, however, you’ll still want to break out the pants.

Keep in mind that the knees-must-be-covered rule of Italian churches does include men as well. It’s not necessarily entirely common for men to be turned away for wearing shorts that hit at the knee–you’ll see men in standard shorts in churches throughout Italy–but it is a possibility, so before you jump in the giant line at St. Peter’s Basilica, consider throwing on some pants.

Jeremy Storm standing on the Altar of the Fatherland, overlooking one of the best views of Rome Italy

When deciding what to wear on your feet in Rome, think comfort: you’ll be walking a ton, so make sure any shoes you bring are well broken in!

Supportive slip ons are fine, or even subtle sneakers –but think dark-colored and low-profile, not chunky white tennis shoes.

If they’re your style, men’s boots like these are a great option during fall and winter!

During spring and early fall, you’ll definitely want to bring at least a light jacket to keep you warm at night. In summer you may want to pack one as well–museums and trains can be extremely cold when the air conditioning gets cranked up.

Look for something like this, for example. Jeremy brings this jacket just about everywhere and loves it.

During winter, look for a warm, fashionable coat that you’re happy to have in all your photos (because you’ll likely be wearing it every day!). Something like this is a great choice.

What to Wear in Rome: Couple wearing coats in front of the Colosseum

Roman men love their scarves, so feel free to bring one at any time of year–but if you’re traveling in the colder months, you’ll absolutely want to have one ! I also recommend bringing a hat to protect your face from the sun, especially in the summer–though if you’d rather wait until you get to Rome, there will be plenty for sale there!

Romans love scarves, and you’ll see both men and women wear them year-round.

They’re great for throwing into your bag if you think you might be visiting churches that day and your shoulders aren’t covered, if you think you might get cold, or if you just want to have a fashion accessory on hand for photos–they’re a great way to get that quick pop of color in your outfit that looks great in Rome.

For spring and summer, aim for something light and bright, and in winter, go for cozier options –I’m consistently amazed at how a warm scarf in winter can immediately make life so much more comfortable.

Sheek designer sunglasses are popular in Rome, and a great way to save your eyes during outdoor sightseeing–but even if you don’t want to shell out the cash for an expensive pair (or don’t want to risk losing them abroad), having a fashionable pair of sunglasses onhand in Rome is almost certain to improve your trip.

What to wear in Rome: crowd at market

Want to make sure that you don’t have to worry about all the items you carefully picked out when deciding what to wear in Rome don’t get soaked in a sudden rainstorm? Bring a packable travel umbrella !

We bring ours everywhere and it has been a lifesaver more than once.

Remember what I said above about what you’re comfortable in being the #1 rule when deciding what to wear in Rome? Still true.

But, unless you absolutely can’t stand to leave these items at home, consider leaving them off your Rome packing list.

College/University T-Shirts

These 100% scream “American tourist”. If you’re young, they scream “American foreign exchange student”.

What to wear in Rome: man with a bowl of pasta

Baseball Caps

Same as above. I actually do wear my baseball cap occasionally in Italy (mostly hiking and at the beach) because again, comfort above all else, but never in Rome.

Chunky Tennis Shoes

Sleek, subtle black sneakers like these Nikes ? Perfectly fine in Rome. Chunky, giant, belongs-in-a-gym tennis shoes? You’ll stick out as a tourist for sure.

A Curling Iron/Hair Straightener/Hair Dryer

Okay, this isn’t exactly something to wear in Rome, but since it pertains directly to appearance, it’s worth mentioning: if you’re coming from outside of Europe, these items won’t work in Italy, even with an adaptor!

You’ll need a converter (which is both heavier and more expensive than an adaptor ) in order to use them.

Your options are 1) do without (most hotels have a hair dryer anyway), 2) buy a converter ahead of time, or 3) buy a European or dual voltage device before leaving (or once you arrive in Italy). Bear in mind that dual voltage devices can be a bit weaker!

Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

I should have read this BEFORE I went to Rome! I definitely made a few fashion mistakes during my visit, but I had so much fun doing so. Rome is one of the places I think everyone needs to visit at least once in their lifetime.

I agree–Rome is definitely one of those cities that everyone should visit if they can. It’s such an incredible place. Hope you make it back one day!

Thank you for the great advice! Very helpful in planning my first trip to Rome!

So glad to hear that, Missy! I hope you have a wonderful time. 🙂

We just visited Rome and Florence (Aug 2022), and I thought I’d add my observations to this awesome post. In general, women tend to dress (a lot) better than men do in Rome (I’m referring to tourists only, of course), so the pressures off guys! A few thoughts, hope you find them useful: – Don’t wear those big and bulky Merrill or Teva sandals, since you’re not going on a hike. Plus they look kinda dorky. Pay a little more and get yourself a nice comfortable pair of Ecco sandals. – No tank tops or T-shirt’s with college names or massive logos. They also look dorky. Wear a collared polo shirt, or if you must, a nicer T-shirt that doesn’t crumple and look sloppy. People seem to swear by merino wool T-shirt’s but I have no experience with them and they just sound like they may not keep you cool. – Do wear linen or cotton shorts. At night, shorts are totally fine for men, but linen pants or thinner cotton pants work just as well. Linen shorts tend to stretch if you wear them a couple of times, so get ones with drawstrings or be prepared to wash and dry else you’ll end up looking like those punks who have their pants falling halfway down their butts, showing off some weird boxer shorts. – no white sneakers with big logos that make you look like you just got drafted by the NBA. Invest in a pair of comfortable “dress” sneakers that don’t look like sneakers. Cole Haan Zerogrand shoes work really well and are super comfortable. Plus they’ll go with both shorts and pants. – Do invest in a good pair of sunglasses. Stay away from oakleys or anything that makes you look like you’re about to go play beach volleyball. If you wear prescription glasses, get ones with transition lenses or a clip on that will help you look cool and protect your eyes at the same time. – Italian men don’t wear hats. But feel free to wear one if you want to. I needed one and brought a thin white baseball type hat. I had a very nice fedora made with papyrus that I got from Israel, but only wore it twice in two weeks. They sell all sorts of fedora type hats everywhere, so feel free to pick one up if needed. Honestly, the only reason to wear a hat is if you’re bald like me and don’t want to get sunburn. Otherwise, hats will just make you feel even more uncomfortable in the heat! – remember, no matter what you do, you’re always going to look like a tourist. Just take it easy, and enjoy the moment and the aperol spritzes.

What do People Wear in Rome? Italy Clothing Style

The most important thing to remember about Rome fashion trends, is that they’re more than likely going to be very similar to what’s popular at home and in other parts of the world.

Deciding on your Rome style and figuring out what to wear in Italy overall should be about balancing comfort, practicality, and your personal style. When you feel good you look good and confidence is the most important thing you can pack.

Generally speaking, Italian style is more dressy than American style, but this DOES NOT mean business attire. The easiest way to put together polished travel outfits for Rome is to start with well-fitted basics and add tasteful jewelry with well groomed hair and makeup.

The secret to a polished “European” look is for your clothing to fit your body well. Choose clothing that isn’t overly snug or loose. You can achieve this by tailoring things such as jeans , tees , and dresses . It’s the small details such as tailoring and accessories that will elevate your Rome outfits.

Tips for What to Wear in Rome

There are three main things to keep in mind when planning what to wear in Rome:

1. The weather in the summer is scorching hot. You might find yourself so overwhelmed by the heat that all concept of style goes out the door in desperation to stay cool. Always Google the expected weather averages for each destination in advance, two weeks before a trip and the week of. Remember, mother nature is not predictable, and not all countries in Europe have the same weather – just as all the cities and states in the USA don’t have the same weather.

Choose pretty but practical clothing in breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and rayon. The best clothes to wear in Rome in summer are dresses. Specific suggestions below.

These are our readers tips on how to stay cool in the heat .

2. While there isn’t a “Rome dress code”, when visiting religious sites like the Vatican please plan for modest clothing. You should cover your shoulders and knees.

However, if you’re traveling in summer, you likely won’t want to cover up in the heat. The easy solution: an airy dress that covers your knees. Store a light layer in your purse, like a thin cardigan , a casul-chic blazer , or t ravel wrap , so you can throw it on when you enter the site.

Read this post to find out exactly what to wear to the Vatican .

3. The cobblestone streets are brutal. Those cute strappy sandals or fabulous heels you planned to wear in your Instagram pics in front of the Colosseum? Forget them.

When it comes to Rome in the summer, most travelers had one of two looks: cute dress and sandals or cute dress and trainers. My guess is that by the end of their first day sightseeing they quickly realized they wouldn’t be able to continue unless they wore more practical shoes.

Comfortable white sneakers are a highly popular shoe choice for locals and travelers, as the trend is still going strong in most of the world. They’ve become a footwear staple, and they’ve been popular for years now.

In addition, Rome street fashion in the summer encompasses combat boots or other mid-calf boots are a secondary option paired with dresses . It becomes a personal decision to wear boots, but given the heat levels in Rome during the summer, you’re better off allowing feet to breathe, so comfy sneakers or cushioned sandals is better to pack.

While it can be tempting to mimic R ome street style , it’s best to always plan for comfort!!! These are the most cute and comfortable sightseeing shoes to wear in Rome.

The last thing you’ll care about after a long, hot day of walking around Rome is whether or not your shoes are fashionable! When your feet hurt, nothing else matters, so plan strategically from the start. Plan for tired feet and consider the 90+ degree heat when you plan what to wear in Rome in summer.

Also, while ballet flats are cute, don’t make these your main sightseeing shoe!

Here are some ideas of practical yet fashionable shoes to wear when tackling cobblestones in Europe!

What to Pack for Rome: Clothing

Take the above items into consideration when planning your Rome packing list and deciding how to dress in Rome. Now, let’s address some detailed packing suggestions.

Gevomir Summer Halter Dress Sizes S-XXL

Dresses are a top choice when it comes to traveling, especially when you’re deciding what to wear in Rome!

  • Wearing Rome dresses is stylish, so you instantly feel polished and dressed up.
  • You don’t have to worry about mixing and matching; they’re an all-in-one outfit.
  • The right dress can keep you fresh and cool in the oppressive summer heat of Rome (or any destination)!

The key to choosing the right dresses is all in the fabric. For summertime, avoid fabrics like polyester and opt for breathable styles in various lengths in rayon, cotton, viscose, and linen.

Specifically, linen dresses is the most airy pick, because they wick away moisture and are highly breathable in the heat.

As you plan what to wear in Rome, make sure you pack at least one dress that falls below your knees so you can wear it to the Vatican, looking respectful but feeling fresh. Whether it’s a maxi (long length) dress or a midi dress that falls just below your knees, choose a classic cut that doesn’t scream beach .

Another popular dress type is dresses with pockets . While small pockets are not recommended for storing valuable items, they can hold non-essentials and overall, pocket dresses emit a retro feel (think Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday!).

If you’re not a fan of long skirts , dresses , or rompers , bring trousers that you know you’ll be comfortable wearing in the heat. Avoid jeans and opt for lightweight capris or wide leg linen trousers that are breathable in the heat.

Always check the weather before your trip to determine the expected highs and lows in the forecast, which will impact your decisions for what to wear in Rome. This will give you an accurate idea of whether you need to bring trousers to wear in Rome. If the temperature in the day or night seems like it will be cool during your trip, bring one pair of pants.

Quince Washable Stretch Silk Sleeveless Blouse Sizes XS-XL

It can be difficult to find summer tops that look city- versus beach- ready. However, the key is to choose neutral colors in classic shapes and styles that can be paired with detailed, structured, or colorful bottoms.

Bring along a few basics you can mix and match with anything, like a timeless white v-neck tee or a sleeveless well-fit blouse. Avoid logo t-shirts and choose comfortable but polished tops that fit properly, look simple yet are effortlessly chic.

Speaking of fitting clothes properly, one of the only major differences between European and American clothing styles overall is tailoring. In the US, we expect clothing to fit us out of the box, whereas in Europe, people are more likely to get their clothes tailored.

When clothes fit properly, they look more refined, regardless of their price tag. Even if an item is designer or expensive, it will look “frumpy” on someone if it doesn’t fit well. While getting something tailored seems like an age-old practice in Europe, modern roman fashion still adheres to this and it shows in the surrounding beauty of the people and landscapes!

Tip: I had brought two jumpsuits and had the straps shortened in the USA, and one of the straps came undone. I went inside a Zyp tailor in Rome, and not only did she fix this and secure all the straps within minutes, but she also didn’t charge me because she said the job was so easy! If you have tailoring to do and have time, it’s worth a visit to get something tailored while you’re there!

If you’re traveling for one week, then plan for seven outfits. In this case, if you plan to bring dresses, just subtract seven with the number of dresses you plan to pack and then you know how many tops you need.

For example, if you plan to bring four dresses , then you only need three tops and one or two bottoms to make seven days’ worth of outfits .

Likewise, if you plan to bring two dresses, then you’ll need five tops plus two or three bottoms so you can have a unique outfit every day of the week without needing to do laundry.

For tops, bring at least one light long sleeve that you can layer over the other tops on a cooler day or during your visit the Vatican . The rest of your tops should be breathable, to keep you cool.

Avoid any blouses that need under layers–you want to keep your clothing as far away from your skin as possible, especially on humid days. Linen shirts and moisture wicking tops can help keep moisture at bay due to their ability to draw away sweat, so you won’t overheat or feel sticky and gross.

If you only pack one skirt, choose one that can be worn with all your tops, for maximum versatility.

A wonderful alternative for your Rome outfits is a jumpsuit or romper . These are great because you have the convenience of wearing shorts without feeling like you’re dressed inappropriately in a stylish city like Rome.

The main thing to remember when choosing what to wear in Rome is to avoid items that are overly casual. Look for structured fabrics. In this case, a polyester (or other synthetic) blend would usually be dressier than an all-cotton style.

What to Pack for Rome: Shoes

Comfortiva Pacifica Strappy Sandal Sizes 6-12 also available in wide sizes

Comfortable Sightseeing Sandals for Summer

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe is the cobblestone streets .

While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven.

Wearing comfortable sandals is important for the above reasons, but the cobblestones can also dig into your feet and the exertion can cause them to feel fatigued (it actually takes a bit of effort to walk on them, if you aren’t use to it!).

The best women’s sandals have support, cushion, and even some traction as you navigate the Rome streets.

Clarks Annadel Eirwyn Wedge Sandal Sizes 5-12 available in wide sizes

Wedges, not Heels to Dress Up

In addition, we all love to dress up, but avoid heels because they’ll leave you feeling uncomfortable. Opt for wedges if you must bring a heel. Do include one pair of shoes and one outfit that can be worn for dining out or experiencing the local nightlife.

Allbirds Wool Pipers Sizes 5-11

Versatile Sneakers for Rome

While wearing sneakers are popular all year round, they’re particularly perfect for fall and spring months, because they can dressed up or down, worn with wide leg jeans or dresses, and can handle a trip to Collessum or the Vatican with ease.

Slip on sneakers are easy to wear and super stylish, while classic white sneakers and black sneakers can be matched with any outfit.  You can also opt for more fashion sneakers that still have good support and cushion for the cobblestones.

Alternatively, if you’re visiting when there might be the occasional thunderstorm, wearing waterproof sneakers can keep your feet dry and protected!

Popular shoe options for what to wear in Rome include (click each item below for suggested styles):

  • Ankle Boots for spring and autumn
  • Ballet Flats to dress up or for warm weather
  • Waterproof Boots for rain and snow
  • Comfortable Sightseeing shoes for year round visits
  • Cute Comfortable Summer Sandals

Rome Traveling Tips

One of our biggest travel tips for any destination is to buy either a print or digital guidebook. They help you plan your itinerary, give you insight on where to stay, and even give you facts about the historical sites, too.

These are a few popular Italy guidebooks:

Rome Accommodations

For accommodation, we love Airbnb for accommodation in Italy and other parts of Europe. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these Airbnb tips for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both Agoda.com and Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For flights, I like booking through Travelocity or Cheapoair (whichever one’s cheapest). Although I prefer Travelocity because they have a 24 hour money back guarantee.

To maximize your vacation time, fly into the city where you’re starting your trip and out of the city where your trip ends. Many times it’s the same price and saves you from having to spend extra time and money to go back to where you started your trip.

For hostels, we recommend Hostelworld and Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel? Read this.

I felt so fortunate to have been hosted by two tour companies in Rome and I had an incredible experience with both of them.

I did a Rome City Tour and a VIP Vatican Tour with Roman Guy tours . Not only were there were only 3 people on my Vatican tour versus the groups of 25-50 around us but my guide Nina was a local fashionista. I also got to skip the massive lines and enter the Vatican one hour before the public!

The other company that hosted me was Eating Europe (the have an Italy tour) . They gave me a complimentary Twilight Trastevere Tour and a Cooking Class with Nina. TFG readers and I both loved their tours! Read my reviews here and here .

In fact, I also did a tour with them in London. It was so amazing!

A fun thing to do is a photoshoot in this romantic, sweeping city. I booked three photoshoots through Airbnb Experiences and my favorite experience was with Roma Portrait. Here’s her Instagram to peek at some of the gorgeous photo sessions she captures!

Disclaimer: we only work with companies that we think our readers would like and only feature them on the blog if we like them. If we don’t, we apologize and tell them we can’t feature them. Our readers’ best interest is always top priority!

Shopping in Rome

If you find you have left behind an essential, or need to add to your travel wardrobe, don’t panic. Italy is the cradle of fashion and all of the biggest brands are located in every city. Stores like H&M and Zara are highly fashionable, with a wide range of clothes.

Not only that, if you’ve forgotten something essential like contact lenses or even medications, the pharmacies in Rome have you covered. I managed to get my contact lenses and some vital medication during my time there without problem.

Italian department stores such as Coin and La Rinascente can be handy when looking for quality items. You can also find designer outlet stores in major shopping destinations, too!

For a fun excursion, I bought a beautiful royal blue jumpsuit at a store called Class . I thought it looked great when I walked out of the fitting room, but the sales lady quickly styled it up properly – the Italian way. Much better!

Tip: I love shopping at Zara in Rome and Paris because they have THE best options, so much better than what they offer in the US. In Paris, I go to every location I see and still love and wear the things I purchased years ago. This is also my favorite place to buy linen. Shop Zara linen clothing!

We will be in Rome for Good Friday – Easter and will be attending at least one service in the Vatican. Are there any special dress code stipulations during this time other than to have knees covered?

Alex

Hi Ruthanne, we do have some more tips here that might help: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-to-the-vatican/

Gloria

I’m traveling to Venice, Sorrento and Rome the later part of March 2019. Is white acceptable then.

Hi Gloria, if you feel comfortable wearing white and usually wear it at home then pack your white clothing! If you are packing white jeans then they are great for when the weather is warm. If you are concerned about wearing white then classic blue jeans are more versatile. Have a look at this article on how to choose the best jeans for travel: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-choose-the-best-jeans-for-travel/ Also this article might help you decide about wearing white: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-wear-white-clothes/ Hope this all helps. Have an awesome trip!! 🙂

Rachel

We walked over 10 miles per day when we were in Rome. I can’t imagine doing so in any of those shoe, skirt, or short dress options.

Rangana Fernando

Hi. I am travelling to Rome by the end of September with my husband & 2 kids (9 months & 2 years) Can you please advise what kind of clothes would be appropriate to combat the weather at that time period. I am confused how cold it is in there. Will a collar coat be enough or do I need to get winter jackets? I really don’t wanna overdo my attire and luggage weight to be minimized. Thanks.

alex

Hi Rangana, the best way to be prepared is to check the weather forecast on weather.com before you go. These are additional tips for Rome:

Tylah

Hiya I’m traveling to Rome late July/beginning of August will this guide be appropriate for this time of year as well?

Yes it is 🙂

Jen Leigh

I will be in Rome for 2 days in September. What are the must sees?

Susan Kayden

Thanks for this post. I will be traveling to Amalfi Coast and Rome next October. Will it still be very hot? And are white jeans ever appropriate? I live in Southern California so I am thinking the weather won’t be all that different and I can wear whatever I do at home.

alex

I love wearing white while traveling! October is shoulder season so it may be warm during the day and cool in the evenings, I’d pack for both options! Enjoy your trip!

jody

several boys on a college football team will be traveling throughout Italy in May, the are 6’7″ and 300 lbs. How can they dress and not look too much like tourists.

Hi Jody, you’ll find a few tips at the end of this post: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-italy-dress-like-a-local/ Just make sure to check the weather before you go 🙂

Hi. I am travelling to Rome by the end of this month. Can you please advise what kind of clothes would be appropriate to combat the cold? I am confused how cold it is in there. Will a collar coat be enough or do I need to wear winter jackets? I really don’t wanna overdo my attire. Thanks.

Hi Maria, take a look at these tips on how to dress for cold weather:

I am going to Rome this September…I want to bring tennis shoes that do not make me look like a tourist…obviously ;). How do you feel about Vans slip on shoes? Also, are Convrese okay or should I just purchase some Superga’s? I really appreciate you advice!

Grazie, Ciao!

Hi Gina! Supergas are very similar to Vans and Converse so I think they should be fine. The clothing you wear with them is probably a bit more important than the shoes themselves. For example, wearing a well-fit tailored outfit with Vans is better than pairing them with cargo shorts and a t-shirt 😉

Lauren M

Hello! I’m going to Rome this summer for the wedding and tacking on a few days in the city for sightseeing. I’m wondering if you can clarify what to wear at St. Peter’s Basilica/the Vatican? It’s number one on my list of things to see and I would hate to get turned away! I understand the covered shoulders, but is a skirt showing some leg appropriate? Below knee length? Just go with light pants that day? I know it’s going to be hot! Thanks for your help.

Hi Lauren, here’s your answer: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-to-the-vatican/

Ashpap

I am currently in Rome and just got back from the Vatican and Basilica a few minutes ago. Granted the weather is very hot, but both women and men were showing their knees in shorts and skirts. Women were also showing their shoulders only some women had scarves covering their shoulders but a number of women were not covered . I never saw a single person turned away.

Travel Fashion Girl

Thanks for sharing this 🙂 Generally speaking, when entering religious sites modesty should be considered, however depending on varying factors this may or may not be enforced or practiced!

alyssa

I know that religious places/ museums have strict clothing rules. What would those be specifically and what are some easy things to bring with to cover up. I will be in Italy from June 27-July 11 going from Venice to Florence to Rome to Praiano (Amalfi coast). I know it will be hot so I’m looking for easy cover-up solutions so I don’t have to bee dying from the heat all day when not in areas restricting clothing. Thanks!

Hi Alyssa, the easy option when visiting museums and religious sites is to just add a layer when you walk inside such as a scarf or cardigan for your shoulders. A comfortable and cool maxi skirt is great for your legs. Have a fun trip!

Olivia

Hi, I’m 19 and traveling to Rome next week for three nights. I dress quite formally in the day, dresses, tights, leather trousers, flat and heeled boots. Usually I’d wear a dress and heels at night for an evening meal and drinks but was wondering what was appropriate for most restaurants at night at this time of year? Hope you can help, thanks 🙂

Hi Olivia, dressier is always better than too casual. I’d usually suggest to skip heels for day time and choose shoes you’d feel comfortable walking on for up to eight hours at a time. You sound like you’ll look great just check the weather forecast asap to ensure your clothes and shoes will work: http://www.bbc.com/weather Also, read this guide on how to walk in heels in Rome: https://travelfashiongirl.com/walking-in-heels-italy/ Have a great trip!

This is brilliant information, thank you for your help!! 🙂

Thank you Olivia!

Angela

I am traveling to Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence) in June. I have designer bags and was wondering if I should take one on this trip or am I better opting for a no name cross body bag? I should also mention I am on a tour group and are travelling private charter.

Looking forward to Italy!

Hi Angela! I think you’ll find that many locals will be wearing designer bags. After all, so many incredible designers and brands are from Italy.

I was told that it’s less the brand of the bag itself but more the opportunity. Remember, if you leave any bag designer or not loosely slung on your shoulder, unclosed, or hanging over the back of a chair it can easily get stolen. Take a look at these tips for more ideas on how to keep your valuables safe while traveling:

Whichever bag you choose to take just be mindful of what’s inside and where you put it on your trip. Have a wonderful time in Italy 🙂

Ash

I am going to Rome December 26th and I am really confused on what to bring this time of year over there. any suggestions? Thanks!

Lucy

Hello, I am hoping you can help me! I am going to Rome in a few days (very excited) and have seen a really nice dress but it shows a little (breast), do you think this is okay to wear in the evening to bars? Or are the bars more casual? Thank you!!

Hi Lucy! It all depends on what type of bars you go to. There are dressy and casual bars everywhere. However, general dress in Rome is not as casual as the US. It’s classy chic.

Emma

Hi. I’m going to Rome in November for three weeks, and probably will visit Amalfi Coast as well. I was thinking to get a pair of Hunter Boots (Rainy Boots), since it’ll be rain and wet most of the time. Is it something that people normally wear there? Thanks 🙂

Hi Emma! Great question. I’m going to post it on Facebook page to get you more feedback. Keep an eye for replies this Sunday. In the mean time, maybe this post would help give you some other ideas for waterproof footwear: https://travelfashiongirl.com/womens-waterproof-boots-for-winter/

jen

Hi! Thanks for your blog! I am traveling to Rome and the Amalfi coast next week, Oct 21-29. I am not sure if I should bring autumn wear (I live in New England) or more summer type attire. Can you help? I am 50 years old but like to think I am stylish – I am from NYC. We are staying at very nice hotels. I was thinking of jeans, leggings, knee high boots and ankle boots for daytime. Are autumn sweaters a good choice or should I stick with long sleeve blouses? I am going to bring a nice leather jacket. Thanks for your help

Hi Jen Sorry to have missed your comment! Did you have a chance to check the weather before your trip? The best way to know if you should dress for summer or fall is to go on weather.com and take a look at the extended forecast. Hope you had a great trip!

Rachel

ive bought a beautiful backless, long red dress for a night out for my 21st, but I’m worried about the whole skin-showing malarkey there. I know they’re strict in religious places such as the Vatican and places of worship but I’m not sure about other places?

Bit worried 🙁 X

Hi Rachel, don’t worry! Your dress will be fine. Bring along a cardigan or scarf you can wrap around your back an shoulders when entering places of worship. Don’t forget comfy shoes! Have fun 🙂

Rebecca

Great article! How would you alter these suggestions for a trip lasting between 3-6 months?

You wouldn’t! You just need to do laundry. Check out these tips on long term travel: https://travelfashiongirl.com/packing-list-for-long-term-travel/

Romana

I’m going to Rome in a few days and I’m so excited! Thank you for this list. Ciao ciao! 🙂

That’s great, have a blast!

Rome

I would also pack a clothes for the rainy wether also :),even in the summer you can have the misfortune to have a lot of rain….

alex

Thanks for the tip. 🙂

MBK

Wow Alex! Thank you so much! I am about to go to Rome this mid-March 2014. I know the weather varies a bit at this time of year, but since you’ve been taking care of the rain A LOT lately, I’m hoping you’ll have much earned sun by then! Could you recommend appropriate clothing? My guess is long pants (hopefully ankle length), flats and cardigans/light jackets….do you agree? Thanks so, so much! MBK

I would check the weather closer to the time as the weather varies in different parts of Italy. I would still plan to pack warmly so take layers and ankle boots or a warm show. Have fun!

Lovelymassiekur

I’m a 13 year old girl, going to Italy for about a month (northern italy) and staying with family? This is during summer break. Please make a packing list for a long vacation there, in the summer? Thank you 🙂

Hi there! You can use this packing list for summer in Italy: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-italy-dress-like-a-local/

matilda

This was really good! So if I pack a pair of, pretty slim and short, jeans shorts it’s OK? Will I get “bad” eyes on me, or is it accepted there? I was in Budapest, Turkey, last year and the people there DID NOT like the shorts…

I’ll go ahead and post your question on Facebook. Thanks!

Chelsea

I wore shorts when I visited Turkey too no one gave me looks. When you’re visiting foreign countries it’s usually not a good idea to wear booty shots 🙂

thanks for the tip!

Linda

Hi! I’m cruising Italy in November on my honeymoon. Need to know how to dress for day trips. I hear November can be one of the rainiest months for Italy. I was told the people there really dress up and if you wear tennis shoes it will be really obvious you are a tourist. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated especially the shoes. 😉

Hi Linda, I’ll go ahead and post your question on Facebook to get some reader feedback for you 🙂

MN Fashion Fan

I live in Italy, the list is almost complete, but you need also a pair of sunglasses, total black will be perfect, and a pair of hell or an elegant flat like this http://www.michelenegri.com/en/shop/woman/5/shoes/25/ballerinas .. you need it during the night time and also a clutch !!!

Thank you for your approval and tips 🙂

Kluhnowesq

Is travel in late September still “summer” travel in Rome?

Per this article https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-italy-dress-like-a-local/ it states Autumn travel is similar to Spring. thanks!

Tor

Thank you so much- I just spent two weeks Roma- packed perfectly- weather was a bit cold- so only got to wear sundress once. Had only a carry on and still had room for 2 new pairs of shoes and some souvenirs on the flight home… Black is essential in Rome… Most worn outfit- jean jacket. T shirt. Jeans. El naturalista boots. big shades. light scarf- for colour…I took converse but they were not comfy on the cobble roads.(really felt like I was off roading – so make sure carry on has good wheels).

It’s great to hear that you packed perfectly! Thank you for the feedback and the comment 🙂

Karen

This is a FUN site!!! I am planning a “Staycation” for my Goddess group and our country of choice was Italy……………..LOVIN’ IT!!!!!

What to Wear in Rome

Understanding what to wear in Rome is something that flies under the radar for many people. When you look up the city on the internet, travel websites go into great detail about things like how Rome was referred to as the “Eternal City” for thousands of years. Or they talk about its remarkable monuments, landmarks, and how the Vatican City is the spiritual center of Rome.

But usually, they won’t talk about what you should wear when you go. Not having the right attire when you travel can make or break your trip. It’s hard to enjoy going anywhere if you’re freezing or sweating the entire day. Not to mention feeling embarrassed because you blatantly stand out as a tourist.

In this article, we will talk about what to wear in Rome for all four seasons. We will also discuss Rome’s specific dress code and respectful attire you should wear when entering churches and religious sites.

What to wear in Rome: Season by Season

The people of Rome enjoy a Mediterranean climate. The summers are usually quite hot in the middle of the day, while early mornings and late evenings can be quite pleasant. In the winter , the daytime temperatures are enjoyable while the nights can be chilly. Because of these temperature variations, you will need different clothing for different seasons. Here we will discuss what you can wear for all four of them.

Winter in Rome Clothing – (December – January – February)

The tourist couple dressed up in warm clothes to visit Rome in winter

Winters in Rome are usually mild, but the evenings can still be cool. Therefore, it is important to wear warmer layers like sweaters and trench coats that can provide excellent insulation. Jeans or pants will keep your legs warm in the evening when it’s chilly out. You might also want to invest in comfortable, waterproof boots to keep your feet warm and protected in case of rain.

Spring in Rome Clothing – (March – April – May)

Example of how a girl dressed for spring in Rome

In the spring, temperatures can fluctuate from warm in the day to cool in the evening, so it’s important to adjust to the climate. For tops, try to have a mixture of short and long-sleeved shirts so you can adapt to the changing weather. Comfortable pants are necessary (or pant skirts in the case of women) as well as good walking shoes or sandals so you can explore the city easily.

Summer in Rome Clothing – (June – July – August)

Tourists who have visited Rome in the summer wear very light clothes

Hot and dry should give you a clue on what to wear in Rome during the summer, so it is important to have light clothes possibly made of cotton or linen that can help you stay cool. Consider t-shirts, tank tops, and sundresses that are ideal for this type of weather. For bottoms, shorts or skirts should be your go-to. To really beat the heat, try wearing comfortable sandals or breathable shoes.

Autumn in Rome Clothing – (September – October – November)

A girl is showing how to dress in Autumn in Rome

Autumns in Rome are similar to the spring , where temperatures can vary throughout the week or even the day. Have light-layered clothing for these changing conditions. Short-sleeved shirts can be good for the beginning of autumn but have something long-sleeved when the temperatures cool down. Pants are fine throughout the season but consider skipping the skirts come November. Rain also tends to increase during this period so think about a rain jacket.

Dress Code in Rome

While there is typically no strict dress code, the people of Rome tend to adhere to a more conservative style of dress. Flashy clothing isn’t necessary so try to wear clothes with clean and classic colors. Dressier outfits are an excellent choice for what to wear in Rome in the evenings. Shoes should not look worn or old, so make sure they are of good quality. Classic accessories like necklaces, watches, bags, and earrings are perfectly fine. As best you can, avoid looking like a tourist (skip the fanny packs).

Rome at Night

People dressed elegantly to walk around Rome at night

There is a certain level of sophistication that characterizes fashion in Rome, as with other European cities. As mentioned before, more formal wear is usually reserved for the evening. Women can be seen wearing dresses while the men have dress shirts or polos. Footwear will also be more formal. In cooler weather, people will wear stylish coats and jackets. A polished look is appreciated here, so make sure your clothes are well-ironed and that you are neatly groomed.

Rome at Day

The tourist dressed simply and comfortably to be able to visit Rome during the day

When considering what to wear in Rome during the day, it tends to be more casual than at night, although you should definitely try for a clean look. Consider well-fitted jeans for men and stylish blouses for women. Comfortable, stylish shoes are necessary for lots of walking around the city . Mornings and afternoons can be mild and sunny, so many spring for scarves, blazers, or cardigans which can be removed or added as necessary.

Respectful Attire for Visiting Churches and Religious Sites in Rome

Keep in mind that there often is a dress code that visitors are expected to follow when entering churches or religious sites. When you adhere to this code, it serves as a sign of respect for the sanctity of these places. Each church might have its own set of rules, but there are some general guidelines that you can follow.

Rules and Customs

Silence is also a sign of respect when visiting religious sites. When you enter, it’s possible to see some people praying or quietly reflecting. Being loud or having conversations during this time could be seen as disrespectful. Also, be mindful of your mobile phones. Put it on vibrate and make sure to follow the church rules about photography if there are any.

When entering a religious site, try to have your shoulders covered, meaning no tank tops or sleeveless tops. Also make sure your shorts, skirts, and dresses cover your knees. When planning what to wear in Rome in summer, avoid very short skirts or shorts when entering churches (actually you should avoid very revealing clothing altogether). Please also remove any hats or sunglasses if you have them. Finally, try not to enter a church with sandals or flip-flops, as closed-toe shoes are more respectful.

Clothes Shopping in Rome

A luxury shop in Rome where tourists come in to dress fashionably

The variety of clothing shops in the city of Rome are staggering and cater to many different preferences and styles. Many people travel to Rome (or Italy in general) for their high-end fashion boutiques and luxury designer brands like Gucci, Valentino, Versace, and Prada. If high-end seems up your alley, check out the fashion districts like Via Condotti and Via Borgognona.

Rome also has excellent local artisan shops which offer handmade accessories and clothing items with unique designs. The vintage and secondhand scene is also flourishing in Rome and can be found in neighborhoods like Trastevere and Monti.

Can I Wear Sneakers in Rome?

Of course! You’ll need them when traversing this grand city. Although in the evenings try to wear something more formal and keep the sneakers at home.

What is Acceptable to Wear in Rome?

There is no strict dress code for the city of Rome unless you are entering certain buildings or religious sites. However, Rome leans more to the conservative side of fashion, so please keep this in mind while packing.

Best Rome Tours with Kids

Free walking tours in rome italy, city walking tour.

First time visiting Rome? Traveling on a budget? No problem, the  Free Walking Tours of Rom e  is the perfect tour for you and your family.

This two-hour city tour meets at the Spanish Steps in the city center twice during the peak season. They offer morning and afternoon tours.

In the morning, your English-speaking tour guide will lead a group of no more than 20 through the historic center. Along the way, they will provide a brief overview of ancient Roman history and modern daily life.

Some of the sights you will visit date back to the Roman Empire, including the Column of Marcus Aurelius, the Temple of Hadrian, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Castel Sant’Angelo with a view of St. Peter’s Basilica.

If you take the afternoon tour, expect to explore different landmarks like an ancient Roman Aqueduct, the Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum, the Imperial Forums, and outside the Colosseum.

Most major European cities offer free walking tours where you can tip your guides at the end of the tour. Due to their huge popularity, Rome Free Walking Tours requires a deposit of €1 to confirm your booking. We recommend a tip in cash or card once the tour is finished!

These cheap tours are a great way to see the highlights of a new city and welcome travelers of all ages.

Best Food Tours Rome

Pizza making class.

Booking a pizza-making class on a vacation to Rome is a no-brainer. This local, unique experience is something the entire family (and your taste buds) will enjoy! Rome4Kids Tours runs some of the best family tours in the city. They offer both private and group pizza-making classes in Rome for kids .

This one-hour workshop is located in a real pizzeria near Piazza Navona so it’s in a super central location. The class is held twice a day around lunch and dinner time. It is the perfect amount of time for the attention spans of young children. They will love learning new cooking skills in a fun, hands-on way.

Drinks are included and, of course, you get to eat your creation at the end!

Gelato Making Class

Everyone knows the best way to enjoy pizza is to follow it with a scoop or two of gelato afterward. Learn how to make authentic Italian gelato (different from ice cream!) in this highly-rated,  private gelato-making class .

Private classes allow the chef to give you special attention. Families will have ample time to ask questions about the gelato-making process. Everyone can wear fun aprons and chef hats and try a second gelato flavor in addition to the one you will make together.

Rome Culinary Food Tour

A walking tour of the city’s top culinary delights is one of the best Rome tours you can take, with or without kids. Secret Food Tours runs fantastic food tours all over the world. We highly recommend adding their top-rated Rome food tour  to your vacation.

Sample Roman pasta, authentic cannoli, lots of ham, salami, cheese, fresh pizza, gelato, and a signature secret dish. The company offers a private option which is a sensible idea when traveling with younger children. You can easily skip visiting coffee shops for espressos and wine pairings if you would prefer.

This tour lasts over three hours, which is great value! Another option is a tour with a private guide. This will allow you to travel at your own pace to make sure the whole family has a great time.

Twilight Trastevere Food Tour

Most will agree the best area for authentic Roman dishes and a true Rome experience is the neighborhood of Trastevere across the River Tiber. Check out this  perfect tour of the culinary scene in Trastevere at Twilight  if you’re traveling with older kids.

On this incredible four-hour tour, dine out on the best street food at restaurants like Da Enzo al 29 and ‘Spirito Divino . Expect to visit ancient wine cellars and listen to interesting stories about the neighborhood as you walk through it. You will learn how to spot fake gelato while gorging on the best gourmet scoops you’ve ever tasted.

It’s hands down one of the best tours in Rome for families with teenage kids , though children aged four and up are very welcome. You can choose the group tour option or enjoy a private tour to explore Trastevere your way!

Riding Tours in Rome

Bike ride at night.

Rome’s historical center is  huge . It’s full of incredible archaeological sites and iconic landmarks which would take you many days to explore on foot. Get out of the midday heat and save little legs by booking this cool  e-bike tour of Rome by night !

Over three hours, you can tick off many iconic spots on your Rome hit list as well as have a fun time with your family. Just some of the stops include Oppian Hill (one of the best views of Rome!), the Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Castel Sant’Angelo, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and Capitoline Hill.

Enjoy the sunset as well as the architecture of this beautiful city. This is one of the best Rome kids tours because they offer options for kids of all ages. You can request child seats, a trailer bike, or a child-sized bike so no one is left out.

Rome Golf Cart Tours

Another fun way to explore Rome on wheels is to book a golf cart tour for the whole family. Venture on a  golf cart tour along Rome’s Appian Way or explore Rome’s seven hills on a golf cart tour with Rolling Rome .

On a two-and-a-half-hour tour of the  Appia Antica  Roman road, head out of the crowded city and see important ancient sites. You will travel past the Aurelian Walls and the Baths of Caracalla followed by an underground tour of the Catacombs of Rome.

On the three-hour tour of Rome’s hills, you will visit over a dozen places including the famous Mouth of Truth from  Roman Holiday,  the Arch of Janus, and the Knights of Malta keyhole. Most of these spots are in or close to the historic center on top of famous Roman peaks like Capitoline, Aventine, and Palatine Hill.

Both of these tours of Rome are private. Not only are they two of the best kids’ tours of Rome, but they are both ideal if you’re traveling with older family members with limited mobility too.

History Tours in Rome

Gladiator school.

Rome’s Gladiator School  is exactly as awesome as it sounds. We are sure your kids will be talking about this experience for years.

Known as  Gruppo Storico Romano  in Italian, your children can take part in a two-hour lesson where they will learn how to become gladiators. They will be just as fierce as those who fought in the Colosseum during the times of Ancient Rome.

Passionate child-friendly guides with years of experience will teach your kids about the history of gladiatorial fights. They are provided with armor and (wooden) weapons as instructors teach them the skills necessary to ‘compete’ in one of the ‘bloody’ games at the end of the session.

Free drinks, a small snack, and free entrance to the Gladiator Museum of Rome are included in this experience.

Sistine Chapel

Visiting the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel can be a busy, overwhelming experience for adults, let alone kids! But you can’t visit Rome with kids without witnessing the beauty of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Make the most of your visit to the holy Vatican City by booking an early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel  or a  Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tour  with Context Travel.

Both tours offer skip-the-line tickets. The early morning express tour of the Sistine Chapel is semi-private for up to six people and lasts one hour and 45 minutes. On the Vatican tour of both the museums and the Sistine Chapel, you can book the small-group or private option which lasts around three hours.

There are two of the best tours in Rome for families visiting Vatican City. You can choose the tour that makes sense for the age and interests of your kids. We promise your family will be glad you booked ahead and aren’t stuck waiting in a huge line outside in the baking sun!

Visiting Rome without a stop at the Colosseum is like visiting Australia’s Great Barrier Reef but not snorkeling. It has to be done! Luckily, the scale and history of this Seventh Wonder of the World are sure to impress even the most unfazed kids.

If you want to take a Colosseum family tour, there are so many great ones. This express Colosseum tour for kids  is a classic. The private family tour lasts two-and-a-half hours and includes a skip-the-line ticket, games, a treasure hunt, and prizes to engage little ones.

Booking a private, underground Colosseum tour will give you access to areas of this ancient ruin which are usually restricted to the general. Both the  underground tour of the Colosseum  and the  underground Colosseum tour with LivTours include skip-the-line tickets.

On either tour, you can visit the underground where animals were kept for gladiator fights, all levels of the structure, access to the exhibition, and further exploration at the Roman Forum.

Visiting the subterranean burial chambers of Rome’s Catacombs is a fun thing to do with children who are intrigued by spooky and macabre places. One of the best tours in Rome for families of the Catacombs is this  private Catacombs tour .

With over 2,000 years of history underneath Rome, it is a great place to learn about Roman gods, pagan temples, and Christian crypts. There are even graves of some of the first popes in the Rome Catacombs!

This tour goes the extra mile by offering luxury transfers to the city center. It lasts three hours and since it’s a private tour, you can linger at places or skip whatever you want.

Day Trips in Rome

Only two and a half hours south of Rome, Pompeii is the perfect place for a fascinating and educational day trip. However, the hassle of renting a car and driving on windy Italian roads is no one’s idea of fun!

LivTours offers a fantastic  semi-private, small-group day tour of Pompeii  or you can book a  private day tour to Pompeii and Capua with Tours of Pompeii.

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city near Naples whose residents tragically perished in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. They were preserved under the ash for over a century until excavations began and unearthed this window to the past.

LivTours works with an archaeologist in Pompeii who will show you around the site and answer any questions. Tours are limited to six people and include transfers to and from Rome in a luxury van.

Tours of Pompeii also includes transfers but has an extra stop in Capua, a city north of Naples with some fabulous ruins. This is also an opportunity to visit the second-largest Roman amphitheater after the Colosseum and all the top sites in Pompeii including the Vettii House, the Baths, the Forum, and the House of Faunus.

Ostia Antica

Do you only have space in your itinerary for a half-day tour? Viator offers five-hour  private tours of Ostia Antica from Rome .

This ancient Roman port town is only 17 miles away from Rome. Kids of all ages (even those in strollers!) are welcome on this tour which includes hotel pick-up, a driver, and a child-friendly guide.

Check out the ancient Roman buildings in Ostia Antica including the necropolis, dye houses, cleaners, large baths, city center, apartments, and bakery!

It’s a completely flexible tour and you could easily turn it into a full-day trip. The beach is only two miles away from Ostia Antica so it’s the perfect place to enjoy a family picnic.

By Samuel Hine

This is an edition of the newsletter Show Notes, in which Samuel Hine reports from the front row of the global fashion week circuit. Sign up here to get it in your inbox.

At Milan Fashion Week in February, I could barely go two steps in my Bally moccasins without being asked if I was coming back for Salone del Mobile in April. Salone, as it’s known, is the sprawling fair that anchors Milan Design Week, a festival of furniture and architecture that brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city every year. Salone is also the only week when flights and hotels are more expensive than during the runway shows, when taxis are somehow even more scarce, when the waiters at Torre di Pisa look at you with even more disdain when you walk in senza reservation. If you think it’s crazy now, everyone said, just wait for Salone . No thank you!

And then I relented and started planning a trip, for the same reason Salone was on everyone’s lips during the runway show circuit. This year, I realized, Milan’s design-palooza was effectively a supercharged extension of fashion week, the latest sign of an accelerating convergence between the worlds of luxury clothing, design, art, and architecture.

“It’s all becoming one big world,” Thom Browne told me. The designer, who typically shows his collections between New York and Paris, parachuted into Salone to launch a line of bedding with heritage Italian linen brand Frette. In one of the week’s headlining moments, Browne took over the historic Palazzina Appiani for a presentation-slash-performance art piece (which I reviewed here ) featuring models dressed in the brand’s signature gray garb sleeping on a series of luxuriously appointed cots. Compared to Browne’s elaborately theatrical runway shows, it was, the designer acknowledged, a bit more “monotonous.” But it was a compelling twist on what the Salone crowd is used to: looking at furniture in a showroom. “There is a lot of crossover,” Browne said, “but it’s nice to do something for a different audience.”

Thom Browne was just one of many luxury brands that brought outsize buzz to Salone. At a cocktail party held by Loewe to celebrate an exhibition of 24 lamps the brand commissioned for the fair, Jonathan Anderson marveled at the turnout for the first day of the show, held in the modern bunker-like basement beneath the 18th-century Palazzo Citterio. “It was madness ,” he said. “We had one- thousand people registered to see the show today, and a 250 person queue down the street all day long!” Most of the eclectic price-upon-request light fixtures appeared to be sold.

The Thom Browne x Frette performance

I was in Milan for 48 hours, but I would have needed an entire week to hit all of the fashion events that took over the city. Besides Thom Browne and Loewe, Loro Piana, Gucci, Versace, Bottega Veneta, Prada, Hermès, Fendi, Saint Laurent, Zegna, Balenciaga, Rimowa, Moncler, Stone Island, JW Anderson, and Off-White all held exhibitions and installations and activations.

Only a few fashion houses were there to actually sell furniture of their own design and manufacture. As a furniture world executive told me at one of the thousand cocktail parties happening on Monday night, it is extraordinarily hard to break into the business due to the high costs of developing production and distribution. (Hermès, which took over a warehouse for an extremely popular immersive presentation of its artisanal leather-wrapped chairs and cashmere blankets, is a rare exception.)

What fashion brands have gotten the hang of is how to use Salone as a marketing tool to a wide swath of consumers. I’ve never seen a line outside a Gucci store anywhere like the one snaking around the brand’s via Montenapoleone flagship on Monday. The crowd was there not for a new collection drop but to see an an exhibition of five iconic pieces of Italian design—including the deeply-’80s Perola lamp designed by Gae Aulenti and Piero Castiglioni, and the modernist Storet drawers by Nanda Vigo—done in the brand’s new signature beet-red Rosso Ancora hue . And in a concrete shell off Palazzo San Fedele that will eventually be the new Bottega Veneta offices, the brand installed two piles of Le Corbusier stools—the same ones guests sat on at Matthieu Blazy’s February runway show.

I’ll admit that Salone lacks the whiz-bang of fashion week. Bottega Veneta’s Fall-Winter 2024 show was full of Blazy’s compelling and challenging ideas about beauty, craft, shape, and the way we dress today. A$AP Rocky was there. Gazing at the object I sat on for that experience was more one-note. Cool stool!

But I quickly realized that Salone’s relatively low frequency was precisely why the fashion crowd loves it so much. Salone is not a celebrity magnet, and the press preview days are packed but low-stress. You can make your own schedule, and there are buckets of free champagne and negronis at every stop. There are no street style photographers, so everyone dresses with a sense of ease. Even publicists, usually frantic, were relaxed. “Oh my god, this week is so much better,” said an Italian fashion PR as he crushed a spritz outside new aperitivo hotspot Bene Bene. The publicist’s firm was handling over two dozen events in two days, but none would require wrangling movie stars or influencers. Unlike clouty fashion week fêtes, Salone cocktail parties are tier-one insider schmooze fests; the biggest of the week was T Magazine’s twentieth anniversary blowout at the iconic Villa Necchi, which broke up soon after a man stripped down to his underwear and jumped in the pool.

And Salone still offers the general public a unique opportunity to engage with luxury fashion in a way exclusive fashion week events do not. This week, anyone who pre-registered could go to Loro Piana’s Brera headquarters to see an exhibition of couches and chairs by pioneering Italian architect Cini Boeri. Or to the Palazzo Versace on via Gesù to see the brand’s opulent “conversation sofas” in the mansion where Gianni used to keep an apartment, accompanied by an audio tour marking significant moments in Versace history. It’s no wonder the furniture crowd is starting to grumble about the fashion world’s Salone encroachment, as I heard a number of times on the aperitivo circuit. The fashion brands are simply putting up huge numbers. Last year, when Bottega Veneta unveiled a Gaetano Pesce installation at its Milan flagship, 11,000 people registered to pass through, and a Bottega rep expected as big a draw this week. (100 editions of the wood stools were for sale for €2,500; 60 special leather-wrapped versions cost €12,000.)

Whether fashion’s relationship with Milan Design Week will last for the long haul is an open question. Show Notes readers may recall that back in 2022 I called Art Basel Miami Beach the “fifth fashion week.” Last year, the energy fizzled as the art market cooled. One thing is for sure: fashion editors will certainly keep coming back as long as Salone continues to resemble one big cocktail party. And if this year was any indication, the fashion world’s massive cultural gravity is only getting stronger. It is clear that the biggest luxury brands can still draw outside industries and events into their orbit.

Not all brands treated Salone as a marketing exercise. Starting Sunday, Prada held its third annual Frames symposium, inviting guest speakers to the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum to lead discussions on the idea of the home. “The home is no longer merely a source of comfort; it acts as a shelter and an infrastructure of services. This constantly evolving, dynamic space is where the socio-economic norms that underpin communities have historically taken shape,” read a press release. On Tuesday, the architect Marina Otera Verzier led an engaging Prada Frames session on the conceptual possibilities of the bathroom. It was extremely interesting—or so I was told. Every single lecture across the two days I was in town had long since been booked.
