9 Best Books About Festivals You Need to Read

Looking for some books about festivals to boost your collection? Or even, give as a gift? Here are some of the best festival books out there to fuel your festival fancies…

festival travel book

Say what you will about us humans, but we sure know how to party. Just look at the sheer number of festivals taking place all over the world, from massive outdoor musical extravaganzas to saint day shindigs and other religious or cultural events. While customs and traditions may vary, they’re all built around a single premise: people coming together to celebrate something that matters to them.

If you’re a keen traveller, visiting some of the greatest and biggest festivals around the world should certainly be on your bucket list. And while I’ve written plenty about festivals on this site, there’s every chance that if you’re a fan, you’ll want to delve deeper into the subject.

So here are some of the best books about festivals. With Christmas coming up, these would make great gifts for any festival fan with wanderlust…

Books About Festivals

The festival books you need in your life to bridge that gap between festival weekends.

1. Celebrate! The Greatest Festivals Around The World

By Victoria Philpott (ME!)

It would feel remiss of me to start this list of best books about festivals without giving mine a plug! Festivals are my specialist subject , having visited 62 in 22 different countries. And I used that knowledge to write Celebrate!

festival travel book

My 207-page coffee table book tells the history of some of the most significant religious, music, food, and sports festivals around the world and offers plenty of practical advice for anyone planning to attend. The list includes some of my favourites — Glastonbury , Dia de Los Muertos , Las Fallas and SXSW — plus others I’ve spent a long time researching and hope to visit one day.

books about festivals

If any of your loved ones are planning on travelling the world and visiting a festival or two in 2023, this is the ideal stocking filler!

You can buy my book Celebrate! at Blackwells … or Amazon on these links.

2. The Road To Woodstock

By Michael Lang

Without a doubt, one of the most famous festivals in history was The Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The event took place at the end of the swinging sixties against a backdrop of the Vietnam War and the rise of Counterculture and was billed as ‘three days of peace and music.’ It’s one of the most important festivals ever to grace the festival scene.

festival travel book

Iconic artists such as The Who, Janis Joplin and perhaps most famously, Jimmy Hendrix, played to a crowd of around half a million people over three days. The man responsible for booking those acts was promoter Michael Lang, who’s written this acclaimed account of the chaos that went into organising the iconic festival.  Buy The Road to Woodstock for a great insight into one of the most iconic festivals there ever was.

3. Lonely Planet: 50 Festivals To Blow Your Mind

Lonely Planet’s travel guides are some of the best around. No matter where in the world you’re planning to visit, the chances are they’ve compiled a whole bunch of expert tips to help. So the fact that 50 Festivals To Blow Your Mind bears their name is a good sign — you know the information is authoritative and trustworthy.

festival travel book

Its list is broken down into categories of festivals, including all action, foodie, music, off-the-wall, and those that are just one big party, so it caters to all tastes. And it features world-famous events such as Glastonbury and Mardi Gras alongside some that are quirkier and less well-known. The Finnish Wife Carrying Festival, anyone?

4. The Big Book of Festivals

By Marita Bullock & Joan-Maree Hargreaves

This book’s excellent if you’re looking to introduce children to the way different cultures celebrate around the world. It explains the history of events such as Diwali, Dia de Los Muertos and the Maori celebration of Matariki in a clear and accessible way and there are plenty of nice illustrations to look at, too.

festival travel book

The Big Book of Festivals is definitely one of the best books about festivals for curious young minds.

5. Glastonbury 50: The Official Story of Glastonbury Festival

By Micheal Eavis and Emily Eavis

Glastonbury’s 50th anniversary may have been overshadowed by the global pandemic, but 210,000 revellers more than made up for it when the festival returned to Worthy Farm last summer. It was a far cry from the original incarnation of the event, the ‘Pilton Pop, Folk and Blues Festival’, which was attended by just over 1,000 people each paying £1 a ticket.

festival travel book

This official Glastonbury 50 book documents the years in between and tells the stories of some of the most iconic headline sets, from David Bowie to Dolly Parton. This is a great book about festivals for any Glasto obsessives out there!

6. Festivals: A Music Lover’s Guide to the Festivals You Need To Know

by Oliver Keens

If you enjoy attending music festivals around the world , you may find some inspiration for your next trip in this book by DJ and music journalist Oliver Keens .

Books about festivals

Part nostalgic history lesson, part practical guidebook, it covers all the major events — Glastonbury, Coachella , Fuji Rock — and some of those that are a little off the beaten track, such as Marrakesh’s Oasis.

7. The Festival Book

by Michael Odell

First-time festival goer? This survival guide written by The Times journalist Michael Odell has top tips to help you get the most from your experience, and includes plenty of celebrity anecdotes too. If you’ve ever wondered what to wear, what to pack , or how on earth you’re supposed to survive a mud bath, you’ll find the answers here.

festival travel book

I mean, to be honest, you can find all that info on this here blog and save yourself £10, but if you like to read these things in print – this could be the book about festivals for you.

8. The Scene That Became Cities

by Benjamin Wachs

Burning Man is unlike any other festival in the world. There’s no official programme; instead, it’s a temporary camp that pops up in the desert each year centred around a loose theme. And it attracts tens of thousands of people.

In this book, serial attendee Benjamin Wachs offers a history of the event and the philosophy behind it, which he believes could be used to re-organise society.

9. Graphic Fest: Identities for Festivals & Fairs

Festival posters are often works of art in their own right, with the likes of Keith Haring and Andy Warhol among the notable names who’ve turned their hands at colourful event ads. This book talks about the process of designing posters for festivals and fairs and offers inspiration for any would-be promoter.

The best books about festivals

Festivals are an incredibly important part of human culture , so it’s no wonder that so many books have been written on the subject.

Celebrate Book by Victoria Philpott

I hope this list offers some gift-giving inspiration for the festival fans in your life — whether they’d appreciate an in-depth history of an iconic festival such as Glastonbury or Woodstock, comprehensive lists of the most notable cultural and religious events around the world to inspire their travels, or a guide to help them survive their first festival.

Would you be interested in listing my book about a disaster of a rock festival that drew almost 300,00 people on a Labor day weekend in 1972? I wrote it from first-hand experience, and the 50th anniversary of it is coming up next year. It drew many bands that were not very famous yet, like The Eagles, Nazareth & The Doobie Brothers. And when Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart & Black Sabbath saw the chaos, they refused to perform. This link to the book explains it a little further. https://store.bookbaby.com/book/the-bull-island-rock-festival

Africa is also rich in tradition and festivals abound, perhaps the most famous being  Timkat  in Ethiopia, celebrating Epiphany and re-enacting the ritual of Baptism. In the Americas you can take part in Brazil’s most spectacular extravaganza, the Rio Carnival, or witness the ancient Inca Inti Raymi festival in Peru. New to Explore? The Literary Festivals to Hit This Year, From Brooklyn to Singapore

There is a rising interest around the world in events that connect authors with bibliophiles.

festival travel book

By Charu Suri

When the Brooklyn Book Festival , considered the East Coast’s largest free literary event, started in 2006, “I saw only about 10 literary festivals in the United States,” said Liz Koch, the co-producer. “Now, there are more than double that, with smaller regional ones that many don’t even know about.”

The best-selling author Sue Miller believes that the number of literary festivals has grown over the last 15 years thanks in part to readers’ passionate interest.

“It’s extraordinary to amble into the authors’ room for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine at one of these events and glimpse the likes of Joyce Carol Oates, or Jennifer Egan or Edward P. Jones,” she said, adding that appearing before readers is also helpful to any writer’s career.

Here are a few festivals that show the diversity of the literary event landscape, each attracting very loyal — and growing — audiences:

United States

The Miami Book Fair , the largest and oldest literary festival in the United States, started in 1984. It now attracts more than 250,000 people annually, and will be held Nov. 15 to 22 this year. The multilingual event, with more than 600 authors, highlights the area’s Caribbean heritage with panels in English, French, Spanish and Haitian Creole. Almost every genre is represented, including children’s literature and graphic novels (admission is $10).

The Brooklyn Book Festival , which attracted over 57,000 people last year, hosts “bookend” events including readings at cemeteries, music venues and even a canoe trip on the heavily polluted Gowanus Canal. The main panels with more than 300 speakers from more than 20 countries are on Oct. 3 to Oct. 4 (free to the public).

52 Places to Go in 2020

We picked destinations to inspire you, delight you and motivate you to explore the world.

In Lenox, Mass., The Mount , home to Edith Wharton and now a nonprofit, hosts 50 literary events each summer that draw around 50,000 attendees. This year marks the centennial of the publication of Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Age of Innocence,” and several lectures are devoted to this particular work, said the executive director Susan Wissler. Most are free.

On May 3, a partnership with the local nonprofit, Word x Word , will result in the world’s largest poem narrated by 100 performers. “You walk down the line to ‘see’ the poem,” said Ms. Wissler. Anyone can sign up to be a part of it.

At the Nantucket Book Festival, from June 18 to 21, the environment and climate change are big themes. David Wallace-Wells , author of “The Uninhabitable Earth,” and Crocker Snow , a local Pulitzer Prize nominee whose work focuses on the effects of climate change on Nantucket and its nearby islands, are on the docket this year.

In Charleston, S.C., YALLFest, a two-day celebration starting Nov. 13, is devoted to young adult books. Jonathan Sanchez, a co-founder, said that the event has grown from 3,000 attendees in 2011 to an expected 12,000 this year, as interest and the number of young adult and middle grade books has burgeoned. “When ‘Twilight’ first came out, it opened the floodgates.”

Today, festival speakers like Jason Reynolds, who co-authored the acclaimed young adult novel, “All American Boys,” about police brutality and race relations, attract a diverse group of young readers.

“Charleston is a place everyone wants to visit, so people make a weekend out of it,” said Mr. Sanchez about why the free tickets get snapped up quickly.

If you missed the festival in Jaipur , India — considered the world’s largest literary event — last month, no worries. There are many quality events across the globe.

In Jamaica, the writers Colin Channer and Kwame Dawes collaborated with the producer Justine Henzell in 2001 to create the Calabash festival, named after the evergreen tropical tree that bears white-flowered gourds. Three hundred people showed up the first year; 3,000 visitors are expected when the event begins May 29.

Past speakers have included Michael Ondaatje, Salman Rushdie and the Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian playwright, Wole Soyinka. All events in the lineup, including poetry, memoir and fiction readings, are free to the public.

“Poets love Calabash as they feel like rock stars, so yes, poetry is a big deal, but the programming is always a mix of genres,” said Ms. Henzell.

In the city-state of Singapore (which has four official languages — Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English), the Singapore Writers Festival highlights those writing and reading in languages other than English.

“Our festival explores the idea of language as a means for identity in a multilingual city,” said the director Pooja Nansi.

The mostly-free festival, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 8, attracts more than 27,000 attendees annually; last year, programming focused on indigenous languages including Bengali and Tagalog.

Beginning Dec. 1, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 will host its second Literature Festival at Sea on its seven-night transatlantic crossing from Southampton, Britain to New York. There is no extra cost to attend for guests (the ship’s capacity is 2,600, and the crossing sold out last year because of the festival’s popularity). The Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin and the cookbook author Prue Leith, who has starred in the television show, “The Great British Bake Off ,” are among the speakers.

Book Festivals: Are They Worth the Time and Travel?

festival travel book

Take a look at that picture. There’s a lot happening there. A lot. It was taken at the annual Ohioana Book Festival, held each April in Columbus, Ohio. Featuring 150 authors from all genres, it’s a flurry of literary hoopla.

Book festivals happen in major cities and small towns across the country each year. Fall seems to be a particularly popular season for book festivals, so I decided to devote a few minutes to dissecting the costs and benefits of book festivals – for authors and consumers alike.

So what’s in a book festival for…

Teachers and Librarians?   Uh, well, books !  It’s no secret that teachers and librarians love books. They love to read and collect them, and they, above all others, are usually interested in learning what’s new in world of literature. In order to remain fresh and interesting, most book festivals only offer slots to authors who have a new book, released within the past year, or sometimes two. Book festivals are a great way to see, hold, and peruse the newest releases.

Teachers and librarians who are looking to hire authors to speak at their venues can do a little reconnaissance at a book festival. Talking face-to-face with a potential speaker can provide lots of good information about their enthusiasm and their potential to captivate with your audience – something that’s hard to gauge from a website.  Sometimes, teachers and librarians might connect in person with an author they already know via social media. It was great to meet the real Ms. Yingling from Ms. Yingling Reads , a favorite middle-grade book blog, which you can find HERE .

Can you see the mutual admiration?

Parents and Families?  Most book festivals are family friendly, with kids corners and teen scenes and reading rooms and roaming storybook characters and face painting and food – of course, there must be food. I love watching families come by my table. I eavesdrop and hear young readers tell their parents “I read that at school” or “I love that author!” I hear families talking about what books to read together and what books to add to wish lists. I see parents getting a better understanding of their child’s likes and dislikes when it comes to reading. And I see lots of tigers, butterflies, and dragons on faces where the smile didn’t need to be painted.

Young readers get artsy making thaumatropes at the Buckeye Book Fair in Wooster, Ohio.

Authors and Illustrators? While attending a book festival is usually free for consumers, the cost of participation may vary for authors and illustrators.  Most book festivals don’t charge authors a fee, but participating authors are carefully selected by the organizers in order to reflect a wide variety of genres. Authors and illustrators are sometimes invited and sometimes they apply. If invited or accepted, authors must consider the cost of an entire day away from their work and travel and, sometimes, lodging near the venue. Some authors find that only a handful of their books were sold after hours of sitting behind a table, engaging in lively conversation with potential consumers. It can be exhausting. But, creators must consider the benefits of attending a large book festival, and there are many. Authors and illustrators often work alone. It’s good to get out of writing caves and interact with the very people for whom we write.  Meeting our audience gives us connection and puts faces to the vague terms “readers” and “middle-graders” and “consumers.” I also have to say that connecting with fellow authors is inspiring and refreshing. I look forward to several festivals a year because I know I will see other authors. Finally, I’ve been invited to many a school or library after meeting a teacher or librarian at a book festival, so often the benefits more than outweigh the cost of travel and lodging.

Borders Book Festival 2024 lineup announced as tickets go on sale

  • Scottish Borders
  • Borders Book Festival
  • Wednesday 24 April 2024 at 2:27pm

festival travel book

The Borders Book Festival 2024 programme has been announced as tickets go on sale.

T he star-studded lineup includes ITV's Robert Peston , Scottish comedian, Janey Godley and author of best seller One Day, David Nicholls, whose book was recently turned into a hit Netflix series.

There will also be other well-known names from the worlds of sport, politics and fiction, as well as new, up-and-coming authors.

The four-day event will be held at the Harmony Gardens, in Melrose from 13 July 2024.

Festival Director, Alistair Moffat, said: “It’s time to start making plans for those long, light, balmy days at the height of the Scottish summer, and what better event to pop in the diary than our annual celebration in our very own Borders slice of heaven.

“This year sees our programme again offer something for every taste: whether that’s literary fiction, comedy, sport, politics, health, current affairs, history or travel – all of life is here.

“We sincerely hope that you will all be here, too, as we revel in the joy of gathering in high summer to talk about the things we love with the people we love, before whiling away a gentle afternoon or evening surrounded by delicious food and drink, enjoying the gorgeous scenery, and absorbing the chitter-chatter of friends and other festival goers alike.

“So do come and join us for the biggest party in the Borders!”

The festival will also play host to live music, the Orchard tented food village, and free, fun activities for all to enjoy.

Councillor Scott Hamilton, Scottish Borders Council's Executive Member for Community and Business Enhancement, said: “I’m delighted Scottish Borders Council is again supporting the Borders Book Festival, in its 21st year.

“The Scottish Borders has a great portfolio of successful home-grown strategic events, with the Borders Book Festival being one of the biggest.

"Its continued success has a positive economic impact in our region, as well as bringing people to the Borders helping to showcase what this area has to offer.

“It’s important to note that the support we provide to the Borders Book Festival and other event organisers goes beyond grants and includes a wide variety of in-kind support, as well as advice and signposting to other potential funding opportunities.

“I’m very much looking forward to another successful and packed Borders Book Festival in the beautiful Harmony Garden.”

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

The 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is officially underway, and the lineup is a can't-miss experience. The Rolling Stones are among the many performers slated to play, making it one of the most highly-anticipated stops on the festival circuit this spring. With the festival just around the corner, we've put together everything you need to know about how to buy New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival tickets, including who's playing what day and how to find tickets to sold-out dates.

First established in the '70s, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has become a staple of the music scene for both Louisiana and the country as a whole. The Rolling Stones were originally slated to play five years ago but had to reschedule. They intended to play again a few years ago, but the entire festival was canceled, so their upcoming headlining performance has been a long time in the making. This year's festival will also bring Vampire Weekend, Hozier, and Neil Young Crazy Horse to the stage, among many others.

Whether you're looking to spend a few days at the festival or just hoping to see Mick Jagger perform, we've got you covered. Here's our breakdown of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival schedule, purchasing details, and original and resale ticket prices. You can also peruse StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

Inside the Literary Travel Boom

Book butlers! Curated libraries! Custom cruises! Literary-themed vacations are the hot new trend in tourism.

In January, when packing my bags for a “reading retreat” in the Dominican Republic, I agonized about which books to bring. A few days later, bellied up to the beachside bar at the all-inclusive Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana resort (where, in place of barstools, swings are suspended from the thatched ceiling), I sipped a mojito, cracked open James Salter’s Light Years, a novel I reread annually, and knew that I’d chosen well.

But if I’d had any regrets, summoning a new paperback would’ve been as easy as ringing for a book butler. I was down in the DR to experience Pages in Paradise, a collaboration between the publisher Penguin Random House, Belletrist Book Club (the brainchild of actress Emma Roberts), and Apple Vacations (no relation to the iPhone maker). For readers who like to beach, the retreat left no page unturned. The programming kicked off even before check-in: Ahead of arrival, guests could log in to the resort’s app to reserve beach reads from an on-site library curated by Belletrist. Housed in the airy hotel lobby, the collection included buzzy contemporary fiction by the likes of Zadie Smith and Curtis Sittenfeld. Guests could also order books via room service (or personal butler) anytime or select one from the chic library carts located at the adults-only pool. The property’s various bars featured the “Pages Pour,” a specialty cocktail themed to the program’s inaugural book-of-the-month selection, Jenny Xie’s debut novel, Holding Pattern . They called the drink a gin-fashioned—a fruit-forward riff on the old-fashioned, zippy with pineapple-cinnamon syrup.

text

Exotic as this tropical gathering of book lovers might have been, it’s just one example of a fast-growing business trend: literary-themed travel. We have the pandemic to thank. Reading surged in the early days of Covid, and the habit stuck as lockdowns eased: The biggest two years on record for print book sales in the U.S. were 2021 and 2022. Hotels and tourism companies, eager to lure back travelers, seized on the surge and began featuring books in their marketing. What began as a travel perk has become a full-blown movement to cater to readers with an explosion of new programming, from big-ticket experiences promising author access to solitary retreats. I know, I know—planning a trip around your reading list may never replace your annual golf weekend, but when else will you get the time to actually enjoy that stack on your nightstand? And if it all sounds like giving yourself homework, don’t worry—there definitely won’t be a quiz, and did I mention the drinks?

As a professional book recommender, the question I’m asked most often is “What book should I bring on my vacation?” But now there’s a new question to consider: What kind of literary vacation should I plan?

Not every reader is content to lie by the pool and read for days on end. Some are looking for a more kinetic experience—one that lets them interact with fellow readers, and even their favorite writers. Enter the “ Gone Girl cruise.” In fall 2022, author Gillian Flynn set sail down the Danube with some of her biggest (and most well-heeled) fans as part of Avalon Waterways’ Storyteller Series, cruises that offer literary travelers a chance to voyage in close quarters with authors and other storytellers. When Flynn tweeted about the cruise, it quickly became a viral sensation. On-board accounts detailed a true-crime extravaganza, with guests returning to their rooms each night to discover blood-spattered notes, themed to Flynn’s novels, on their pillows. Sure, it’s a little dorky—but we’re all fans of something, and if crime novels are your thing, what could be better?

For readers who can’t splash out for getaways abroad, there are literary destinations closer to home, too. In the artsy hamlet of New Hope, Pennsylvania, the historic luxury hotel River House at Odette’s offers Riverside Reading (in partnership with Bedside Reading), a program that pairs complimentary access to a curated library (via digital app or hard copies throughout the hotel) with intimate author experiences. With bookshelves stationed on each floor and authors rolling through seasonally, guests can dip in and out of the programming as they please.

When I visited River House deep in the grips of a harsh Pennsylvania winter, I discovered a reader’s paradise: My room boasted a fireplace, a private balcony, and serene views of the rushing Delaware River. After turndown service, I found a keepsake leather bookmark on my pillow. That evening, a few dozen guests gathered for a talkback with the novelist Jean Hanff Korelitz. In a ballroom festooned with red carnations (a nod to the cover of her latest book, The Latecomers ), Korelitz fielded rapid-fire questions about her inspiration, her writing process, and her hit novel The Plot . After the formal conversation concluded, starstruck guests crowded around her at the bar. “When people come up to you and say, ‘I loved your book,’ that really means something to writers,” Korelitz told me. As the owner of BookTheWriter, a service connecting authors and readers through pop-up book clubs hosted in New York City apartments, Korelitz knows a thing or two about making connections. In the recent boom of literary travel experiences, she sees a broader post-pandemic trend of readers craving the chance to get up close and personal with their favorite writers. “The ways of access to authors have multiplied exponentially,” she said. “I find it to be very inspiring.”

For an early-career author like Xie, who was at Pages in Paradise, seeing her novel highlighted was both exciting and transformative. That’s the thing about literary travel—it allows us to transcend our ordinary lives in more ways than one. “There’s a certain sense that we don’t have the space to read unless we’re traveling or living outside of our day-to-day,” said Xie. “A book takes you outside of your physical environment and your lived experience. Travel does that, too, so they join together in this really beautiful way to truly transport you.” That’s a journey worth taking.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR OWN LITERARY VACATION

Ready to take off on a bookish getaway? Literary travel isn’t “one size fits all,” so whatever type of reader you are, we’ve got a prescription for it. Choose your own adventure below.

For the fan

The Gone Girl cruise is over, but Avalon Waterways isn’t slowing down anytime soon: Its upcoming slate of Storyteller Cruises includes actor Graham McTavish (sailing down the Rhine River) and Outlander phenom Diana Gabaldon (voyaging down the Danube).

For the R&R chaser

Looking for a more relaxed experience? At the Reeds at Shelter Haven, an upscale resort on the Jersey shore, guests can participate in Reeds’ Reads, a seasonal book club featuring guided discussions, with authors sometimes joining via Zoom for Q&A sessions.

For the aspiring writer

Chances are, your favorite author is side-hustling by leading retreats in pastoral Europe. To get in on the action, pay close attention to their social-media feeds, or search for guided trips through an experiential-tourism outlet like TrovaTrip.

PSA: Philippine Book Festival 2024 officially kicks off

N o matter how much time has passed since you joined a book club—or picked up something to read—the magic of books never fades. Maybe it's time to rekindle that spark at the Philippine Book Fair 2024, the largest traveling book festival in the country that highlights Filipino books, which officially kicked off on Thursday, April 25, and runs until the 28th.

Publishers, authors, illustrators, and collectives bring their titles under one roof at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

The venue has six different sections: General, Kid Lit, Komiks, Booktopia, Aral Aklat, and Food Stalls.

The General section is where you can find booths by different organizations such as the Korea Copyright Protection Agency, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Komisyon ng Wikang Pilipino, and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, among others.

You can find books for the little ones from publications like Adarna House, Lampara Books, ABC Children's Books, and more in the Kid Lit area. Meanwhile, works by The Heart Project PH, Comic Odyssey, Anino Comics, Tarantadong Kalbo, and more are available in the Komiks section.

Titles from Vibal Group, Ateneo de Manila University Press, GMA Paperkat, Anvil Publishing Inc., and more are found in the Booktopia area; while Rex Group of Companies, Phoenix Publishing House, Central Book Supply Inc. are located in the Aral Aklat area.

The festival might be a lot to navigate, but the discoveries are well worth the effort.

More than just a book fair

In addition to book sales, various pocket events will be held simultaneously on different stages. These include panel talks, book launches, masterclasses, slam poetry, and kid-friendly activities like storytelling, puppet shows, and arts and crafts sessions.

Notable events include a book launch for  Gren, Ang Kaibigan Kong Alien  with actors Marian Rivera, Gabby Concepcion, and Raphael Landicho; a talk with historian Ambeth Ocampo, a read-along with GMA's Encantadia  stars; a book reading event with Ayn Bernos; and a cosplay competition.

Kids, on Day 2, can participate in the Heneral Tuna  storytelling by Aklat Alamid and an arts and crafts session with Anya Sntos-Uy and Mia Claravall-Reyes. There's also a scavenger hunt and more storytelling on Days 3 and 4.

Immersive space for everyone

The book festival is also an avenue to learn more about history. The Rare Book Collection Exhibit from the National Library of the Philippines will also be displayed at the festival. It includes the first editions and facsimile of Dr. Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere (1887) and El Filibusterismo (1891), as well as Pedro Paterno’s Ninay (1885), the first novel authored by a Filipino in the Philippines.

Kids can visit the Book Nook booth, their version of the National Book Development Board's reading and writing spaces that are usually found in remote areas around the Philippines.

The entrance to the festival is free. Guests can register in advance here but walk-ins are also welcome. It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Gov. kristi noem faces backlash for boasting about shooting her dog dead, gov. kristi noem blasted on social media folks pissed she shot & killed dog.

Governor Kristi Noem 's got social media users howling with rage -- 'cause she admitted to shooting and killing her own dog ... something she says had to be done.

South Dakota's political leader tells the harrowing story in her upcoming memoir, "No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward" ... discussing farm life and detailing exactly why she says her young wirehaired pointer had to die.

The Guardian reviewed the book and rehashed this sad chapter. KN owned a 14-month-old pup named Cricket with an untrainable and aggressive personality, and didn't turn out to be the best hunter either. After an attempted hunt, she says she started driving back with Cricket ... only to make a stop at a local family's home, with the dog attacking their chickens.

The dog apparently killed some of the chickens and when Kristi tried to get it under control ... the canine nipped at her ... and that's when she realized she had to put it down.

Noem says she grabbed her gun and led Cricket to a gravel pit ... where she shot the dog to death. She adds she took no pleasure in the act, but claims it was necessary.

The governor -- who many believe might be Donald Trump 's VP pick -- adds she's had to kill other animals before too ... like an aggressive goat that knocked her children down because she says it wasn't castrated.

She shot it in the same gravel pit as Cricket ... but says it took two bullets to kill the goat because she only injured it the first time.

As you can imagine, the outrage on X is fierce ... many are blasting Noem for killing defenseless animals, while others are sharing pics of their dogs in solidarity with Cricket.

We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years. If you want more real, honest, and politically INcorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping,… pic.twitter.com/bKhpUkchHV — Kristi Noem (@KristiNoem) April 26, 2024 @KristiNoem

Kristi's not bothered though, responding to one outlet's article by saying animals die all the time on farms ... and, encouraging supporters who want to read more wild stories to buy her new book. Unclear if this tale is gonna affect Trump's decision in possibly selecting her.

Folks are pretty fired up about it ... that's for sure.
