St. Simons Island is one of our top choices when we want to escape the chaos of life and slow down. Crossing the causeway from the mainland marshlands surround you. You find yourself relaxing and your breathing becoming more measured and even. You’re on island time now.

Four beautiful barrier islands hug the Georgia coast midway between Jacksonville, Florida , and Savannah, Georgia . These four islands, St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, and Sea Island, make up the Golden Isles along with their mainland kin, the city of Brunswick.

St. Simons is an ideal base of operations for visitors to explore the Golden Isles. Each island is different and unique. St. Simons offers a beachfront resort, lots of local, kitschy, and boutique shopping, and loads of history.

Things To Do On St. Simons Island

There is so much to see and experience on St. Simons! These are our top recommendations.

Beach views at St. Simons.

Stroll On The Beach

Don’t miss an early sunrise walk on the beach! I have seen some of the most spectacular sunrises of my life on the beach at St. Simons. It’s also a fantastic way to begin the day — a sunrise stroll followed by a steaming cup of coffee from ECHO (more on this favorite St. Simons restaurant below).

Go For a Bike Ride, Paddle, Or Sail

Rent a bike for the day and explore the many bike trails on St. Simons. Biking is a great way to explore St. Simons and get your exercise also. Take a bike, head out on one of the bike trails, and stop for a refreshing sip on the way back.

Barry’s Beach Service offers bike rentals as well as kayak and sail rentals. Speaking of being on the water, renting one of Barry’s Hobie Cats is a fun way to skim across the waves and have a ball! But don’t worry, you’ll have a quick tutorial in how to sail these quick cats, and then off on the water with your instructor.

Lighthouse Tours With Cap Fendig

As a history lover, I enjoy taking the trolley tour offered by Lighthouse Tours . The trolley gives you a peek into St. Simons’ past, present, and future. Owned by Cap Fendig, a raconteur and lifetime resident of the island who is a member of one of the island’s oldest families, you are in for a real treat! Cap Fendig oozes history and will happily share his love of the island and its secrets with visitors.

The trolley tour will take visitors around the island for an immersive experience into the history of St. Simons. Each tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers the island’s history from 1742 to the present day.

Along with his wife Catherine, Cap owns several local businesses. Cap’s passion is helping “visitors create special memories that last a lifetime.”

Take To The Greens

For golfers, a trip to the Golden Isles is paradise. On St. Simons, don’t miss The King and Prince Golf Course . There are four signature holes nestled in the marshlands. The King and Prince course is on the top of many serial golfers’ lists when it comes to golf getaways.

Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Day Trip To Jekyll Island

Plan a day trip over to Jekyll Island and visit Driftwood Beach . Large driftwood “trees” are scattered along the beach, standing like sentinels. This is a must-see when visiting St. Simons and the Golden Isles.

Jekyll Island is a state park, and there is a charge for a parking pass ($8 per day). For more information on the parking pass and how to purchase one, click here .

Site Of The Battle Of Bloody Marsh

The Lighthouse Trolley tour includes the location of the July 7, 1742 battle between the English and Spanish, known as the Battle of Bloody Marsh .

It was on this site that the Spanish forces were beaten back in their only attempt to invade Georgia and attack Fort Frederica. This battle was the decisive end to Spain’s claim to the territory.

Gascoigne Bluff

A fallen live oak tree at Gascoigne Bluff provided the timber for the framework and hull of the U.S.S. Constitution , also known as Old Ironsides , in 1794. This is also a stop on the Lighthouse Trolley tour.

Christ Church on St. Simons Island in Georgia.

Christ Church

Christ Church , nestled among live oak trees draped in Spanish moss and cedar trees, is one of the most photographed sites on St. Simons. But it is the history of this fascinating church that draws you in.

General James Oglethorpe arrived on the island in February of 1736 with the first English settlers. Church services started with services being held under the trees on the site of the present-day church.

In 1820, the first church building was built on the site. In 1884, the church was rebuilt by shipbuilders.

The design of the church resembles a ship’s hull paneled in gleaming wood. The present altar in the church, built in 1884, has incorporated the remains of the original church altar.

The cemetery of Christ Church contains unmarked graves dating back to 1796. Renowned author Eugenia Price is buried in the Christ Church cemetery.

World War II Homefront Museum

We seek out World War II museums along our travels, and the World War II Homefront Museum on St. Simons is one of our top favorites. Housed in the historic St. Simons Coast Guard Station, the museum highlights the role Coastal Georgia played in World War II.

There are interactive and immersive museum exhibits on radar technology and directing fighter pilot squadrons that guests can use to test their skills.

You’ll hear stories from locals who worked building liberty ships in Brunswick, what it was like during blackouts, and food rationing.

Admission to the World War II Homefront Museum is under $15 for adults, and rates are discounted for children and those with military ID.

Best Restaurants On St. Simons Island

St. Simons is a paradise for foodies! You’ll find seafood, Southern favorites, barbecue, and more.

ECHO at The King and Prince serves classic coastal culinary creations with a unique twist. The name ECHO pays homage to the role The King and Prince played during World War II. The restaurant is where the former officers’ quarters, classrooms, and towers were located.

ECHO is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, try the warm peach parfait, made with yogurt and granola. For dinner, the local grouper dinner is delightful.

Georgia Sea Grill

Georgia Sea Grill is another favorite! Local restauranteur Zack Gowen has big visions for the culinary scene, and the Georgia Sea Grill is the linchpin.

Zach’s belief that fresh is best led him to Potlikker Farms. Potlikker Farms, part of Zach’s growing culinary vision, has been brought back to a thriving farm and is committed to delivering the best and freshest seasonal offerings to Tim Lensch, Georgia Sea Grill’s executive chef.

Chef Tim is creating some of the most extraordinary culinary dishes I’ve tasted. Favorites include the Low Country crab soup, Georgia bison carpaccio, and the bronzed fresh catch.

Gnat’s Landing

For an authentic laid-back island vibe, don’t miss Gnat’s Landing . Make sure to try the Vidalia Onion Pie. The name is misleading because it is not a pie, but a creamy, delicious dip that is heavenly. Made with Swiss cheese, sun-dried tomato, and onion, it is one of their signature dishes.

The fried dill pickle chips hooked me with the first bite, and I am not a pickle lover. The slaw bowl, crafted with ramen noodles, almonds, and sesame seeds in a vinaigrette dressing is fantastic.

Gnat’s is casual and laid-back, an excellent choice for lunch on the island.

Where To Shop On St. Simons Island

For a bit of retail therapy, plan a visit to Redfern Village . Redfern is in the center of the island near the traffic circle. You’ll find children’s boutiques, jewelry shops, home decor, and more in Redfern.

Two Friends is a boutique that carries home decor, women’s clothing, notecards, handbags, and more. Each time we visit St. Simons I stop in and, of course, take home notecards or that clothing piece I just couldn’t pass up. The boutique is located at 295 Redfern Village.

One of my favorite St. Simons stops is Golden Isles Olive Oil Company . The oils and vinegars are all imported, and the olive oil tasting is a taste-changing experience! They are located at 306 Redfern Village.

Best Hotels On St. Simons Island

The King and Prince Golf and Beach Resort is perched right on the beach and is our top choice for staying on the island. In fact, The King and Prince is the only beachfront hotel on the island.

There are several types of accommodations to choose from, including oceanfront beach villas and private guesthouses.

Whether you choose to play in the ocean, relax on the beach, or relax poolside soaking in the sun and breathtaking views, The King and Prince has you covered.

The King and Prince is steeped in history, starting with its humble beginning in 1935 as a seaside dance club. The oceanfront hotel opened in 1941. During the World War II years, the hotel became a naval coast-watching station and training facility. The hotel reopened in 1947 and has undergone several extensive renovations since then.

From the moment you step through the front doors, you are family. A cozy and inviting fireplace, just steps from the ECHO bar, is a popular gathering spot. I love sitting in front of the fire in the early winter months, sipping a Peach on the Beach handcrafted cocktail.

Anytime is a good time to visit St. Simons. I have visited St. Simons during all four seasons of the year, and I prefer to visit in the late fall or early winter. I like the island’s uncrowded feel during this time of the year and getting an opportunity to chat with the locals.

No matter when you visit St. Simons, you will not be disappointed.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Golden Isles, know that Little St. Simons is a haven for nature lovers. The island is accessible only by boat from St. Simons Island’s Hampton River Marina.

Jekyll Island is home to Driftwood Beach, one of the most photographed sites on the Golden Isles and my day trip recommendation. Jekyll is also home to the famous Jekyll Island Club. Sea Island is home to two five-star resorts, The Cloister on Sea Island and The Lodge at Sea Island.

People generally don’t associate beaches with Georgia despite it having 100 miles of Atlantic coastline and 14 barrier islands; some of which are state parks or dedicated to protecting wildlife like sea turtles and wild horses. For many Georgia residents, an annual trek to the beach wouldn’t be complete without a visit to St. Simons Island. The large barrier island just off the coast is home to an iconic lighthouse, salt marshes teeming with birds and sea creatures, treelined streets dripping with Spanish moss, historic sites, and some really good beach food.

Below is a list of just some of the great dining to be found while visiting the beaches on St. Simons Island or checking out the nearby city of Brunswick.

Twin Oaks BBQ

Since 1943, this Brunswick barbecue joint and drive-in institution has been serving up smoked rib plates and bone-in rib sandwiches, old-school burgers, country fried steak plates, and slaw dogs with sides of battered fries and fried green tomatoes for lunch.

  • Open in Google Maps

Willie's Wee-Nee Wagon

Founded in 1975 as a simple hot dog cart by Arnell “Willie” Chambers and Yvonne Chambers, Willie’s Wee-Nee Wagon has since become a thriving restaurant locals love doing brisk business from its walk-up window. Order hot dogs served in properly steamed buns, like the Brunswick dog garnished with ketchup, mayo, grilled onions, and cheese or the Kraut dog topped with sauerkraut and mustard. There’s also burgers, fried fish sandwiches, and Polish sausages. But those in the know swear by the original pork chop sandwich. It’s a go-to at Willie’s and sees slices of grilled boneless pork chop topped with mustard and grilled onions sandwiched between a fluffy bun. The restaurant is so confident in that pork chop sandwich, they’ll give you $2,000 cash if you find one better tasting anywhere in Glynn County.

Happy Pappy's Bakery

Sticky toffee cake, mini pies, glazed buttermilk doughnuts, and pecan pie bars are all baked fresh at Happy Pappy’s Bakery in Brunswick. Some baked goods offered even come from century-old family recipes. Grab coffee, a latte, or a coffee protein shake and a sweet treat for the road. Vegan, keto, gluten-free options available.

Hwang Keum Jung Korean Restaurant

This family-owned and operated Korean restaurant in Brunswick serves everything from rice cakes, mandu, and seafood pancakes to bulgogi, generous plates of japchae, and hot pots and hearty galbi soup on the menu. Make sure to check out the lunch specials.

Tacos Don Panchos

Pop into this Brunswick Mexican restaurant for birria tacos, a meaty molcajete bowl filled with steak, chicken, chorizo, carnitas, and shrimp, torta sandwiches, and barbacoa chimichangas. There’s also Mexican seafood dishes and breakfast, along with churros, fried ice cream, and tres leches cake for dessert.

La Salsa Taqueria Tienda

Located across the street from a Publix, La Salsa Taqueria Tienda offers an expansive menu featuring everything from tortas stuffed with scrambled eggs mixed with pork, sausage, steak, and chicken and a variety of tacos to a selection of Mexican seafood dishes, hearty soups like menudo on the weekends, and chilaquiles.

Island Jerk Shack

Come here for jerk chicken and fish entrees in Brunswick served with rice and peas and plantains, bowls of brown stew, oxtail plates, and Jamaican beef patties. Can’t decide? Try the sampler platter, which comes with a choice of three meats, rice and peas, and plantains.

Angel’s Cafe (Brunswick)

A low-key, no frills spot for lunch in Brunswick, Angel’s Cafe includes a revolving menu of daily soups, salads, burgers, and sandwiches. Order a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast with a side of the restaurant’s popular pasta salad and a cup of the soup of the day.

A Moveable Feast

Another Brunswick option for soups and sandwiches, A Moveable Feast offers salads like tuna nicoise or a traditional wedge with creamy blue cheese dressing, as well as egg salad sandwiches with smoked salmon, a caprese panini, and a turkey BLT. Order a cup of the soup of the day and an ice cream sandwich for dessert.

Palmer's Village Café

This quaint cafe located in the village near the lighthouse serves an all-day breakfast and lunch. Order any of Palmer’s Village Cafe’s omelets, like the hooch with spicy tomatoes, provolone, cheddar, and sausage topped with fried onions. For lunch, try the crabwich with herb mayonnaise, bacon, lettuce, and tomato jam on a griddled English muffin.

Barbara Jean's

Sometimes nothing beats a plate filled with Southern comfort foods. Barbara Jean’s serves everything from fried chicken and catfish sandwiches to shrimp and grits and chicken fried steak. The restaurant is known for its crab cakes. Don’t leave without eating a slice of key lime pie for dessert.

Del Sur Artisan Eats

Del Sur Artisan Eats mixes the flavors of Argentina with Italy in its dishes. Start with the grilled game sausage or lamb empanada before the main course of linguini alla vongole or smoked pork butt sautéed with guava sauce and a side of polenta.

The Half Shell SSI

The Half Shell is located in the Pier Village at the tip of the island. This is where to head for peel-eat-shrimp, oysters on the half shell, and chilled tuna tacos. Try an oyster shooter, like the Red Neck with a shot of PBR or an Old Bay rimmed with an oyster topped with hot sauce, lemon and lime. Walk to the pier after dinner for spectacular sunsets or a nighttime stroll on the beach.

CJ's Italian Restaurant

This Italian restaurant filled with kitschy decor on St. Simons Island bills itself as a family-friendly spot. Head in for plenty of pizza, meatballs subs, and classic American-Italian pasta dishes, including baked spaghetti and chicken parmesan. Order a slice of Reece’s Peanut Butter pie for dessert.

Palm Coast Coffee, Cafe & Pub

Palm Coast isn’t just a cafe, it’s also a coffeehouse and a pub with a full bar. The cafe is open for breakfast starting at 8 a.m. Order the shrimp frittata with tomatoes, bell peppers, and onions topped with goat cheese and chives paired with an Irish coffee or a bloody mary. For lunch, try the Thai chicken wrap or the ham, apple, and cheddar panini with a beer.

More in Maps

Frosty’s griddle and shake.

Old-fashioned hamburgers, hot dogs, chocolate-dipped soft serve cones, and milkshakes are what’s on the menu at Frosty’s. Order a Frosty De-luxe topped with American cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles, and Frosty sauce with a basket of crinkle fries. End the meal with a milkshake, root beer float, or a fudge brownie sundae.

Mallery Street Cafe

Mallery Street Cafe is a family-owned and operated breakfast and lunch spot located near the historic St. Simons Island lighthouse. The menu is simple and straightforward with pancakes, eggs, and coffee in the morning and salads, burgers, and sandwiches for lunch.

Porch is serving up Nashville-style hot chicken (and catfish and shrimp) with four levels of heat ranging from naked (no heat) to the order-at-your-own-risk napalm. There’s a great outdoor seating area for hanging out after a day at the beach.

Sandy Bottom Bagels

Sandy Bottom Bagels makes New York-style kosher bagels fresh daily from its St. Simons Island shop. The deli carries traditional bagel flavors like everything, pumpernickel, egg, and sea salt as well as asiago, sun-dried tomato, and French toast. Swing by in the morning and order a build-your-own bagel breakfast sandwich.

Southern Soul Barbeque

Southern Living magazine once dubbed this St. Simons barbecue spot housed in a former gas station “the best barbecue in the South”. While which joints actually serve the “best” barbecue is a matter of personal taste in the South — and will always be a hotly debated topic — Southern Soul does legitimately serve really great ‘cue, along with Brunswick stew. Order the Southern Soul Sampler with a choice of two or three meats (get the brisket and the ribs) and two sides.

Some days just call for a comforting bowl of pho. Island Pho is a family-owned restaurant serving Vietnamese fare, including bowls of chicken or beef flank pho, spring rolls, lemongrass chicken, and shaking beef. Order brown sugar bubble tea or refreshing strawberry fruit tea before heading back out into the sun.

Dulce Dough Donuts & Bakery

The pastry case at Dulce Dough is filled with decadent doughnuts every morning, like guava glazed, Boston cream, or the bakery’s signature dulce Bismark with caramelized pineapple jam. The creme brulee doughnut is always a win. Want something a little less sweet? Order the cheddar bacon cathead biscuit, a sausage, egg, and cheese on a buttery brioche roll, or a slice of the daily quiche.

Crabdaddy's Seafood Bar Grill

This seafood bar and grill is a St. Simons mainstay. For over 30 years now, Crabdaddy’s Seafood Grill has played host to island residents and tourists seeking fried shrimp, grouper fingers, and crab cakes. Make sure to order a side of cheese grits and green bean casserole. There’s banana pudding for dessert.

Halyards Restaurant

Most people who live on or visit St. Simons regularly consider Halyards Restaurant beach fancy. There’s no need for a coat and tie, but do prepare for more upscale dishes during dinner such as seared ahi tuna, filet mignon, and blue crab bisque paired with a glass of champagne or a big, bold cabernet.

Barrier Island Brewing

This brewpub opened on the island in 2019, brewing everything from an amber lager and wheat ale to hazy and double IPAs and seasonal beers. The beer-friendly food menu features bites like a stuffed pretzel board, scallops and hash, a steak sandwich, and, of course, a pub burger. Unlike many breweries, the seating at Barrier Island Brewing is more restaurant than taproom.

Certified Burgers and Beverage

Certified Burgers and Beverages opened on St. Simons in 2017, and it’s become a must-stop for burger enthusiasts at the beach. Try the Nola burger (an ode to that city’s muffaletta sandwich) topped with salami, lettuce, tomato, provolone, and olive relish. Order a side of chickpea fritters, boiled peanuts, or smoked fish dip to nibble on before the meal and an ice cream float for dessert.

Cafe Frederica

Cafe Frederica is a favorite for breakfast and lunch for the island’s permanent residents and its frequent visitors. The cafe has been open for well over 30 years now on St. Simons. Try the crab cake benedict or the eggs benedict with country ham and corned beef.

Dorothy's Cocktail & Oyster Bar

Named for chef and owner Daniel Auffenberg’s grandmother, kick off a meal at Dorothy’s with selections from the raw bar, including oysters, crudo and shrimp ceviche. Next, order shrimp toast or the scallion pancake, before diving into fire-roasted fish served with curried cauliflower, a Georgia shrimp roll, or the crispy fish sandwich topped with Fresno chilis and Asian-style slaw. Pair a meal with one of the top-notch cocktails from the bar, like the classic daiquiri or Lion’s Tail. Great spot for happy hour.

Sals Neighborhood Pizzeria

Founded by New Jersey native and professional boxer turned pizza slinger Sal Cenicola, Sal’s Neighborhood Pizzeria is said to have the best pies on the island. In addition to New York-style pizzas, Sal’s also offers heaping bowls of pasta, sandwiches, including a giant meatball sub, and calzones aptly named “salzones”.

Bennie's Red Barn

Another longtime St. Simons Island staple, Bennie’s Red Barn first opened in 1956 and has grown into a destination restaurant for couples and families gathering together for a meal. Housed in a rustic red barn, the menu features steaks, fried chicken plates, and fried or boiled seafood with appetizers like conch fritters, oysters Newberg, and batches of “mighty fine” onion rings. Do not skip the desserts at Bennie’s, including the pecan and derby pies and the bread pudding.

The Market at Sea Island

Looking for a spot to grab a breakfast sandwich and coffee in the morning or a made-to-order sandwich in the afternoon from the deli while stocking up on food provisions for the beach house? The Market at Sea Island sells take-and-bake meals, fresh-baked breads and cookies, local produce, meats, and seafood as well as cheeses and wine in its shop.

11 Best Things To Do On Cumberland Island, Georgia's Gorgeous Natural Gem

This barrier island is a sanctuary to behold, including historic ruins and wild horses.

Kelsey Glennon is a travel writer & photographer with experience traveling to over 50 countries. She’s a Floridian and solo female traveler covering luxury hospitality, interior design, sustainability, and lifestyle.

Where is Cumberland Island?

Cumberland island history, tips for getting there, best things to do, where to stay.

Steeped in history and seemingly suspended in time, this enchanting Georgia barrier island offers visitors an immersion into another time. Far from the sounds and demands of the modern world, Cumberland Island is a retreat to a slower pace of life.

Today, Cumberland Island is mostly protected land under the classification of National Seashore . The 17-mile-long strip of land remains largely in its natural state, populated by dense maritime forest of live oaks, saw palmetto, sabal palms, and pines. Marshland merges into wide sandy beaches. You’ll see wild turkeys roam, as well as another animal that is not native to the island but has given Cumberland its romantic reputation: horses. Brought to the island by its early residents and now left to roam wild as the need for their domesticated work disappeared, it’s estimated there are well over 150 wild horses on the Cumberland island. No matter where you are, you’ll likely hear the creatures whinney and neigh as they roam around their coastal home. Important to remember: As elegant as they are, do not approach or try and pet the horses.

Here's what to know about Cumberland Island, and what to do once you get there.

Kelsey Glennon

You’ll find this golden isle off the coast of the Georgia-Florida state line. It is only accessible by water—on a ferry or private boat, or by private plane.

Its landscape consists of marsh, ancient live oak maritime forest, and, of course, beaches. The shores are white sand dotted with shells, driftwood, and the hooves of wild horses. The best time to visit is between October and June. The summer months can be buggy, humid, and hot, so if you do visit during this time, come prepared with plenty of provisions.

Cumberland Island’s first residents were the Timucuan Native Americans. Spanish and English explorers arrived in the 1500s. By the late 1886, most of the island had been acquired by Lucy Coleman Carnegie, wife of Thomas Carnegie, co-founder of the iron and steel conglomerate Carnegie Brothers & Company. Lucy brought luxury to the island in the form of estates, family mansions, and a power plant.

Today, Cumberland Island is mostly protected land under the classification of National Seashore , with the exception of some remaining private land still owned by the Carnegies, Candlers (of Coca-Cola), and several other private owners. The island was almost developed in 1972, but the island’s residents banded together with environmental organizations and the Department of the Interior to protect the wild island, donating most of their land to the public. Its classification as a National Seashore protects it from development in perpetuity.

All visitors to Cumberland Island must register with the National Park as there are only 300 visitors allowed per day. There are no car bridges to Cumberland Island. The only way to get to the island as a public visitor is by a 45-minute ferry ride.

There are several fees involved in visiting the island:

  • The National Park entry fee .
  • A Cumberland Island Ferry ticket, which departs from St. Marys, Georgia.
  • A bike fee , if you bring one to get around the island faster.
  • A camping fee , If you wish to stay on the island overnight.

Use this Cumberland Island visitor’s checklist from the National Park Service to ensure you are prepared for your trip with the right supplies and registration.

Take a Rugged Overland Tour

The island is rich with history, settlements, and significant buildings, which can be hard to hit all in one day. However, the Lands & Legacies 6-hour overland tour takes you to the highlights of Cumberland Island’s North Shore, and is booked through the same platform as your ferry ticket. This is the only public motorized tour offered of the island.

Take a Walking Tour

Cumberland Island is 17 miles long, so it is not advised to try and explore the entire island on foot as a day visitor. But, you can take a 4.3-mile hike called the South End Loop Trail. For extra guidance and narration, this private walking tour covers some of the main attractions on foot and works around the ferry schedules so day visitors can make the most of their time.

Roam the Dungeness Ruins

Perhaps Cumberland’s most majestic attraction, the Dungeness ruins are what is left of Lucy Carnegie’s estate she built for her family in 1884. The 35,000-square-foot mansion burned in 1959, but you can still envision the grandeur of this Gilded Age vacation home from the brick and stone bones of the ruins that remain.

Go Beachcombing on Cumberland Island Beach

Cumberland’s history and ruins are fascinating, but its natural beauty is breathtaking. Take a slow walk on the wide beaches at low tide. Look for shells and enjoy having the beach to yourself, save for a few wild horses in the distance.

Marvel at the Plum Orchard Mansion

Plum Orchard is a Georgian Revival mansion framed by massive, ancient live oaks. The family home was commissioned by Lucy Carnegie for her son George and his wife Margaret. Unlike Dungeness, Plum Orchard still stands and underwent extensive renovations in the early 2000s to save it from ruin. Today, the mansion is maintained by the National Park system, and docent tours are run during its active season. Check first at the ranger station to ensure tours are running to avoid a 15-mile trip from the ferry docks.

Learn About the Gullah Geechee Culture

Historically, Africans who worked on isolated coastal communities along the Carolina, Georgia, and Florida coast brought along their African traditions and heritage through arts, crafts, and music (influencing American culture today). This specific diaspora became known as the Gullah Geechee . After emancipation, many of the former enslaved peoples remained and lived off the land they had come to know so well. The Gullah Geechee community established The Settlement at the north end of Cumberland Island. It was the first privately owned community of former enslaved peoples after the Civil War. Today you can visit and walk through the last standing home of the community. You can also go inside the First African Baptist Church—often noted as the location of John F. Kennedy Jr.’s 1996 marriage to Carolyn Bessette in a clandestine ceremony far from the eyes of the press.

Remember, the north end of the island is a 30-mile round trip journey from the docks of the public ferry. The best way to see the settlement as a day visitor is part of the Land’s & Legacies Tour by overland van.

Cruise around Cumberland Sound

Though not technically on Cumberland Island, sailing the sound is a great way to enjoy the beauty of this untouched coastal region. Book a sunset cruise with Follow That Dream charters to enjoy an evening out on a comfortable catamaran, complete with snacks and drinks. Sail past Amelia Island and along the horse-filled shores of Cumberland while the sun sinks below the horizon.

Wear a Piece of Cumberland Island

A remote barrier island might be the last place you’d go to purchase fine jewelry, but on the Greyfield Inn estate is a home and studio inhabited by Gogo Ferguson, a family descendent of the Carnegies and a well-known artisan. There, she makes and sells Gogo Jewelry , which is made from found flora and fossils on the island.

Camp on Cumberland Island

Rugged adventurers who wish to extend their exploration of the island can book nights camping on the island. Pitch your tent at one of the island's designated campsites and fall asleep to the soothing sounds of horses and nature all around you. Wake up to another day traversing the large island or just enjoying your campsite by the beach. If camping overnight, you must make a reservation with the National Park Service, and can do so up to six months in advance. Follow their camping requirements for visiting Cumberland Island.

Indulge in an Overnight Stay at the Greyfield Inn

For a completely different overnight experience to camping, indulge in a luxurious stay at the Greyfield Inn. The Inn is another private Carnegie family home, this one built in 1900 for Thomas and Lucy’s daughter, Margaret. Today, it is immaculately maintained by the family and on-island staff. The Inn’s large veranda is the epitome of Southern leisure. Inside, a library and living room invite guests to sit and play a game of chess or rest by a large crackling fire. A guest stay is all-inclusive and includes drinks and all meals (much of which comes from the onsite garden), including a picnic lunch you can take where you wish on the Inn’s complimentary bicycles. The Inn is open year-round save for the month of August when it closes during the island’s hottest month.

Mini Restaurant Tour

St. simons and jekyll island: tour through food.

Eating out at home can be a challenge when trying to find safe places to eat. On vacation, sometimes, it feels close to impossible to find restaurants that offer genuinely gluten-free items other than salad. During our trip to St. Simons Island and a day trip to Jekyll Island proved the Golden Isles are more than just beautiful beaches and family fun.

food tour st simons island

St. Simons Island has many wonderful restaurants with such an eclectic mix and variety to choose from. It was tough not to eat the same thing every night, and the most challenging part was figuring out where to eat each day since we were only there for a few short days. The places we did choose were kid-friendly, offered take out or outdoor seating. However, what made eat meal special, for me anyway, was the amount of care each restaurant took to make sure efforts were made to keep the food safe, and the servers’ communication exceeded expectations.

Our first night, we enjoyed a take out meal from Sea Salt Healthy Kitchen . This restaurant offers many options from soups, hummus, rice bowls, wraps, and more. The menu shows “healthy codes,” noting if an item is gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and keto. I enjoyed the Wild Mexican bowl, which was filled with rice, quinoa, fresh vegetables, and topped with pico de gallo. The side salad was tasty as well. Sea Salt also had kids’ options, so it was an excellent place for the family to grab a quick meal for a movie night.

During vacation, we usually have one night where we enjoy a nice sit-down meal in a restaurant we probably wouldn’t visit at home unless we have a sitter, and it was a special occasion. Echo not only delivered beautiful water views from the patio area and a warm rustic welcome, but the food was also melting in your mouth delicious. I enjoyed the sea bass, which was cooked perfectly. My husband enjoyed fish taco while the kids had a flatbread pizza. Before we sat down for dinner, we enjoyed playing tic-tac-toe with seashells and enjoyed watching the sunset. I would suggest making a reservation or being at the restaurant when they first open because the wait was about 30-45 minutes.

food tour st simons island

Echo is located at the King and Prince Hotel (est. 1935), which has a unique background. During our visit to St. Simons Island, we visited the Coast Guard museum, where we learned about the history of the men and women station on the island. Echo and The King and Prince Hotel were once the former locations of the officer’s quarters, classrooms, and towers where the ships and submarines’ signals would send updates throughout the war. You can also pull up a set at the bar, which was once the location for service members and their wives to have a night socializing and relaxing during downtime.

food tour st simons island

Our last night of vacation, we spend the evening near the pier. We had about 30 minutes before dinner to waste, so we window shopped, enjoyed the local vendors, and watch people fish from the St. Simons Pier. We had dinner at Iguanas Seafood Restaurant . It was a fun restaurant decorated with an underwater theme. The menu had so many gluten-free options to choose from and many items for the rest of the family. The kids enjoyed coloring, naming different fish and sea animals hanging from the ceiling, but the best part was the free ice cream. Although we did not indulge at the restaurant, it was a pretty impressive array of toppings.

food tour st simons island

After dinner, we visited St. Simons sweets . This small candy store had a line out the door, and it was clear to see why once you stepped inside. They lure you in with a display of assorted fudge to your right and a colorful display of M&M candies to your left. We made our way down to the ice cream counter, and our kids shared a child cone, which was more like a small serving for an adult. The candy shop was such a fun place to visit and see some sweets I haven’t seen since I was a little girl.

food tour st simons island

During our day trip to Jekyll Island, we had lunch at Sunrise Grille. I called ahead to see what items were gluten-free on the menu, and when the manager started naming at least six off the bat, I knew we found a great place. Sunrise Grille has indoor and outdoor seating under an awning to help keep those summer rays from making sweat during lunch. This restaurant was in the perfect location for shops, hotels, and the beach, which we visited after eating lunch. Although they had an array of gluten-free food to choose from, I went to an oldie but goodie shrimp salad. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and I loved they pared it with fresh avocado and fruit. The kids enjoyed a grilled cheese with a bowl of fresh fruit while my husband had a grilled chicken sandwich.

food tour st simons island

On your way out of town, we stopped at a local coffee shop. Not expecting much other than a decent cup of coffee, we stumbled upon The Local Brew, a local coffee shop establish in 2016. I was impressed with the number of breakfast sandwiches and other foods they offered but what was more impressive was they had had gluten-free bread for substitutions. Sandwiches are made to order and can be prepared the way you like. Once again, the cook was beyond careful preparing my food and went as far as to make sure my bread was toasted in a different area than the rest of the sandwiches. I enjoyed the avocado toast with tomatoes and arugula. I have since recreated this for breakfast at home using bagels.

St. Simons and Jekyll Islands are an excellent place for foodies to enjoy fabulous meals, explore new menu options, and find hidden gems on vacation. I’ll be researching new locations to eat on our next trip to see what other places we will fall in love with.

What a great list of restaurants. I love that you found a local coffee shop too – we always look for those when we travel.

I believe local shops usually have the best coffee.

Yum! I would definitely visit St. Simons for some sweets.

I know what I would do St. Simons and Jekyll Island…Eat. All of this looks amazing!

I feel like all we did was eat which was fine with me. The food was great and we walked almost everywhere.

These meals look amazing! And I definitely want to visit Jekyll Island.

Our next trip will be planned around the food.

I do love a good coffee at a local cafe who have breakfast sandwiches. Yum! The Local Brew sounds great, especially as it is so hard to find places that actually separate out food prep for gluten free items.

I agree. They did a great job with the food (which was delicious) and the coffee was great.

Everything looks so great! Great ideas!

It is so nice to find restaurants that offer gluten free options! I’m gluten free and also vegan. Did you notice whether they offer much in the way of vegan food?

I have noticed more places with vegan items. Sea Salt had multiple vegan options as well as Echo. Both places made great suggestions and even checked with the chef to make sure the items were safe.

' src=

It must be a constant challenge for you every time you dine out. I work in a bistro and we do try to cater for those with gluten intolerance, but with more than just salads. You did well to find so many. But I think we are all improving.

I think its a challenge for both sides. I have found more places are offer a wider variety of gluten free options or at least making suggestions to modify whats on the menu. I don’t mind the challenge and I am enjoying being able to help others find safe places to eat while away from home. Which Bistro do work and where is it located? I’d love to visit if I’m able.

Thanks for this review! Our family is planning a trip and I’d love your advice. We’re all gluten free and dairy free, which place had more options for us to eat? St. Simons or Jekyll Island? I’d love to hear your opinion. Thanks so much!

Hey Jess! We stayed at a condo in St. Simons so we mostly ate on that island. There many places to eat and everywhere was great with accommodations. I really enjoyed Sea Salt on St. Simons as well as Iguana’s. We ate at Sunrise Grill on Jekyll. They had many options as well. Since we only spent a day on Jekyll I didn’t get to explore many restaurants.

Past British Open champions Cameron Smith and Brian Harman lead area contingent in Masters

Past champions vijay singh and zach johnson are also in the field for the season's first major championship..

food tour st simons island

It's going to be a light contingent of First Coast and Golden Isles players in The Masters Tournament this week.

But two of them are past champions at the Augusta National Golf Club. And four of the five area players in the field are past major champions.

Masterful day: Lily Wachter of St. Augustine captures Drive, Chip and Putt title

Heading the list are the last two British Open champions, Brian Harman of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Cameron Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach. Every year they are eligible for The Masters they will be trying to join a long list of players who have won the oldest major (the Open began in 1863) and the youngest (the Masters started in 1934).

Thirteen players have done both, led by World Golf Hall of Fame members Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Seve Ballesteros. The last Open champion to then add a Masters to his resume was Nick Faldo in 1989.

Here are the area players in the 2024 Masters:

Harris English, St. Simons Island

Masters appearances: Four.

Best finish: A tie for 21st in 2021.

Notable: English has three top-10s in the U.S. Open.

Brian Harman, St. Simons Island

Masters appearances: Five.

Best finish: Tie for 12th in 2021.

Notable: Harman routed the field at Royal Liverpool last year for his first major championship, winning by six shots.

Zach Johnson, St. Simons Island

Masters appearances: 19.

Best finish: Won in 2007.

Notable: Johnson's 1-over 289 to win the Masters was the highest score since Jack Burke in 1956.

Vijay Singh, Ponte Vedra Beach

Masters appearances: 30.

Best finish: Won in 2000.

Notable: Singh's victory kicked off a stretch in which he finished tied for eighth or better in six of seven years at Augusta.

Cameron Smith, Ponte Vedra Beach

Masters appearances: Seven.

Best finish: Tied for second in 2020.

Notable: Smith became the only player to shoot in the 60s in all four rounds at Augusta in 2020 when he finished five shots behind Dustin Johnson.
