Gregg Allman: the 15 best songs from one of the great southern songbooks

Gregg Allman's ghosts drove him to do terrible things to himself; they also helped drive people who cared for him away. But without those ghosts he might never have been the artist he became

Gregg Allman

The still heart of The Allman Brothers Band was Gregg Allman. It wasn't so much his singing – though his voice, soulful and grizzled and expressive, was brilliant – but his Hammond playing. Like Malcolm Young’s rhythm guitar playing in AC/DC , the steady platform Angus needed to bedazzle with his own soloing, Gregg treated his Hammond as a background instrument. It appeared to be almost irrelevant at times, yet it added all of the colour. His playing was unfussy, economical and exactly what the Allman Brothers Band needed.

He always maintained that talent was not something a musician is born with, but something that had to be learned and nurtured. Equally, though, the almost supernatural ability to turn talent into an expression of pure emotion is not something that can be learned in rehearsal rooms and tight stages in small clubs. It’s a gift, and Gregg Allman had that gift. These 15 of his best songs.

Alt

Whipping Post (The Allman Brothers Band, 1969)

Initially conceived as a slow blues, Gregg’s existential ballad took on new levels of intensity in the hands of the Allman Brothers, who transformed it into cathartic rock’n’roll on their debut album and, on the live At Fillmore East, a 23-minute epic. ‘ Good Lord, I feel like I’m dyin’! ’ howls Allman.

It’s Not My Cross To Bear (The Allman Brothers Band, 1969)

This early classic was written in LA for Gregg’s aborted solo album, prior to forming the Allman Brothers with elder brother Duane. It’s remarkable to consider that Gregg was only 22 when he delivered it, his anguished vocals imbued with all the sorrow and rage of a much more weathered soul.

Dreams (The Allman Brothers Band, 1969)

‘ I’m hung up on dreams I’ll never see/Help me baby/Or this surely will be the end of me ,’ Allman pleads over a jazz-scented figure and traces of swampy blues. The Allman Brothers gave the song an added psychedelic jolt, but Gregg’s organ lines grounded it firmly in southern dirt.

Ain’t Wastin’ No More Time (Eat A Peach, 1972)

Allman Brothers bassist Berry Oakley pushed Gregg to finish this song, partly inspired by soldiers returning from duty in Vietnam. It ended up as a glorious eulogy for brother Duane, killed in a motorcycle accident during the sessions for Eat A Peach . Gregg’s gospel piano riff dominates, flanked by Dickey Betts’s slide guitar.

Melissa (Eat A Peach, 1972)

Gregg supposedly thought so little of this ballad, first recorded with pre-Allmans band The 31st Of February, that he sold his publishing rights to it to buy a plane ticket. It was revived five years later for Eat A Peach (in honour of Duane, who adored the song) as a soulful acoustic beauty with a yearning vocal.

Wasted Words (Brothers And Sisters, 1973)

Ditched in favour of Ramblin’ Man as the lead single from Brothers And Sisters , the Allmans’ first album post-Duane, Wasted Words weds a delicious piano boogie to slide guitar and serves as Gregg’s kiss-off to a fractious lover. ‘ I ain’t no saint and you sure as hell ain’t no saviour, ’ he growls.

Midnight Rider (Laid Back, 1973)

On his solo debut, Laid Back , Gregg recast his signature tune first recorded for the Allman Brothers’ Idlewild South three years earlier. Both versions are exquisite, although this one packs added punch due to a horn section and some haunted southern swampiness. It also landed him a Top 20 hit in the States.

Come And Go Blues (Playin’ Up A Storm, 1977)

In contrast to the pugnacious live take on the Allman Brothers’ Wipe The Windows, Check The Oil, Dollar Gas the previous year, this studio version of Come And Go Blues (credited to the Gregg Allman Band) has a resigned delicacy that showcases its introspective tone. Wonderfully understated vocal, too.

Just Ain’t Easy (Enlightened Rogues, 1979)

Three years after splitting up amid much rancour, most of it aimed at Gregg over his involvement in the drugs conviction of security man Scooter Herring, the Allman Brothers reconvened for 1979’s drily titled Enlightened Rogues . A highlight was this spoonful of tormented despair, written in the wake of his failed marriage to Cher.

I’m No Angel (I’m No Angel, 1987)

Never mind the glossy 80s production values or the fatuous Wild West video that accompanied it, Gregg’s cover of Bill Medley’s I’m No Angel (written by Tony Colton and Phil Palmer) is a droll send-up of his hellraising persona. Sometime Allman Brother Dan Toler adds squealing guitar, but it’s Gregg’s gruff bravado that provides the kick.

Good Clean Fun (Seven Turns, 1990)

Encouraged by the solo commercial success of I’m No Angel , the Allman Brothers were again back on the agenda by 1990, re-forming for Seven Turns , with Warren Haynes sharing lead guitar with Dickey Betts. Gregg co-wrote this brutish rocker, a throwback to the classic Allmans sound of the early 70s.

Old Before My Time (Hittin’ The Note, 2003)

A minor classic from the Allman Brothers’ last stand, on which Gregg alludes to Midnight Rider in his lyrical sentiments (‘ There is a long hard road, it lies so far behind me ’) as his protagonist weighs up a lifetime of dashed dreams and restless wandering. Above it all he remains steadfastly defiant.

High Cost Of Low Living (Hittin’ The Note, 2003)

Guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks lay down the bedrock of this mini-epic from the Allman Brothers’ final studio album, Hittin’ The Note , edged by Gregg’s Hammond B-3 organ. It’s the latter’s valiant voice that steals the show, however, essaying the life of a survivor whose victories come at a heavy price.

Just Another Rider (Low Country Blues, 2011)

Gregg’s stirring 2011 comeback, Low Country Blues bore the scars of an eventful life that had survived six marriages, a liver transplant and multiple spells in rehab. At 63 years of age his voice was fully seasoned too, not least on this terrific co-write with Warren Haynes that plays loose with southern R&B and brassy soul.

Floating Bridge (Low Country Blues, 2011)

Sleepy John Estes’s pre-war tale of cheated death had already been covered by both Eric Clapton and former Groundhogs guitarist Tony McPhee by the time Gregg came to it for Low Country Blues , but its funky southern chug and stoic sense of resilience lent itself perfectly to the trials of his own experience.

Top 10 Gregg Allman Songs

Gregg Allman will always be most famous – and rightly so – for his contributions as singer, songwriter and keyboardist with the Allman Brothers Band . But, as you'll see in this list of Top 10 Gregg Allman Songs, his solo career provided its share of highlights along the way. Our final tally touches on everything from the Allmans' criminally overlooked 1969 debut and their celebrated At Fillmore East breakthrough to a key moment from '90s, but not without a pair of stops outside that celebrated catalog. Duane Allman looms large over the list, just as he did in passing . But in the end, the Top 10 Gregg Allman Songs make their own case for the brother who remained.

"Floating Bridge"

You couldn't help but think of Allman's many health scares as he rumbled through this old Sleepy John Estes song. Opening with a strikingly thread-bare croak, Allman sat at the bottom of a muddy river, looking up at family and friends as he struggles for air. After a lonely handful of minutes, he finally began to move back toward the murky light above. A similarly emboldened Allman, fresh off a life-saving liver transplant , made Low Country Blues a testament to determination.

"Soulshine"

"Soulshine" didn't emerge from a heralded, or even very congenial, period in the Allman Brothers Band history. (Everyone, it seemed, was dealing with personal problems; this would ultimately be the last album with co-founding guitarist Dickey Betts .) Still, Where It All Begins became their final gold-selling release on the strength of songs like Warren Haynes ' "Soulshine," a straight-forward, live-in-the-studio song that Allman presents with lingering melancholy and a dash of hard-won hopefulness.

"Don't Mess Up a Good Thing"

This rollicking Oliver Sain cover was the second single, following a solo update of "Midnight Rider," from Allman's No. 13 hit solo debut – and, as with that remake, refocused listeners on the deep soul and greasy R&B underpinnings of the Allman Brothers Band sound. That's the principal attribute for much of Laid Back , which featured Allmans contributors Jaimoe and Chuck Leavell but almost never sounds exactly like the band that had just issued Brothers and Sisters .

"Ain't Wastin' Time No More"

Work on this song was underway when Gregg's brother Duane was lost in a motorcycle accident. Gregg completed it – reportedly after receiving early encouragement from Berry Oakley and Jaimoe – by adding a lyric that drills into the unimaginable sense of loss they were all experiencing. Betts spent the plane ride down practicing to get the slide just right, and Eat a Peach had an instant classic for both its opening track and first single.

"I'm No Angel"

Though produced in the sleek style of the day, and featured in a video dotted with sexy cowgirls straight out of MTV central casting, "I'm No Angel" finds Gregg Allman at his cheeky best. (Heck, he even gives the executioner a quick peck before he's hanged.) Apparently, his former bandmates were paying attention as this song soared to the top of Billboard 's Mainstream Rock charts, too. The Allman Brothers Band were back together within a couple of years, and performing this song on stage – though without the provocative extras, of course.

"Not My Cross to Bear"

Later the title of Gregg's 2012 autobiography , "Not My Cross to Bear" is a testament to the pain of loss – he wrote it about a broken relationship that took place before the band's debut sessions – and to the incredible power of his voice. Who else could have leveraged this song, even for a brief moment, away from his brilliant brother Duane Allman's musings on the guitar? By the way, "Blackhearted Woman" – the very next song on The Allman Brothers Band – is about the same woman.

As ubiquitous as Gregg Allman's plaintive vocal on this track has become, "Melissa" almost never saw the light of day. Gregg and Duane had recorded it with their preceding group the 31st of February, and Gregg apparently thought so little of it that he sold the publishing rights for cash he used to buy a plane ticket. Duane, however, always loved the song – leading to its inclusion as a tribute on the post-motorcycle accident project Eat a Peach . But only after Dickey Betts added another unforgettable lead.

One of the stone-cold classics from the Allmans' debut that makes its paltry No. 188 finish on the Billboard charts all the more confusing. Already the centerpiece for The Allman Brothers Band , "Dreams" later became an extended concert staple – sometimes stretching out to almost double its original seven minutes. Oddly, however, it was the song that gave the group the most trouble in the studio. Duane finally nailed his guitar part after asking the others to turn off the lights, improvising a tear-inducing overdubbed solo on the slide.

"Whipping Post"

Unable to find a piece of paper while in a rush of frustration over their early struggles in the music business, Gregg Allman scribbled the words on a nearby ironing board. Eventually, "Whipping Post" expanded from a five-minute blues howl on their debut to fill an entire side on vinyl copies of At Fillmore East – the album that put those worries behind the Allman Brothers Band for good. Yet, the song – written by a 20-something who was already well beyond his years – never lost its billowing power.

"Midnight Rider"

Gregg Allman's signature song, "Midnight Rider" speaks to – and exemplifies – his restless nature. After all, Allman later made another pass at this song, adding swampy horns. Still, the definitive version will always be the first one from three years earlier. Understated where the remake tends toward obvious assertion, the original "Midnight Rider" grew out of a rough, late-night demo recorded after an inspired Gregg broke into Capricorn Sound Studios. Duane completed things by adding his own asides later.

Hailing from Nashville Tennessee, Gregg Allman is the founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, and was inducted into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Following the success of the Allman Brothers, after the tragic death of Duane Allman in 1971, Gregg Allman embarked on his own solo career. He wasted no time in entering the studio to record his debut album “Laid Back” which was released in October 1973, and made it to number 13 on the Billboard 200. His second studio album was called “Playin’ Up a Storm” which was released in May of 1977. It featured a similar Southern Rock vibe to his previous album and made it to number 42 on the Billboard 200. In November of that same year, he released an album called “Two the Hard Way”, which was in fact a collaborative effort between Allman and Cher. The album featured the song “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” written by Smokey Robinson. The album sold a less than anticipated 550,000 units.

After ten years, Allman released his first album since the collaboration album with Cher. The leading single “I’m No Angel”, made it to number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100, but managed to reach number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks. The album itself peaked at number 30 on the Billboard 200. He released another album called “Just Before the Bullets Fly” on June 12th the following year, which unfortunately didn’t achieve the same success.

On January 18th 2011, Gregg Allman released an album called “Low Country Blues” which reached number 5 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Top Blues Albums.

Live reviews

I’ve been a fan of Gregg Allman, but I’ve never had the chance to see him in concert so I was super excited when he came to Napa! I saw him at Uptown Theatre and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. The theater is beautiful, and was the perfect setting for his laidback southern sound.

Gregg is one of those rare musicians who actually sounds better in person, even after all these years-I was amazed at how great his voice is live. The band was really good too, perfectly complementing his vocals. The whole concert was very low-key (in a good way) and felt really intimate for such a large space.

It’s not surprising, but Gregg is really charismatic and has a great stage presence, and the way that he interacted with the crowd was really fun and made it much more personal.

The best song of the night was definitely the version of “Midnight Rider” that was different from the original, but just as fantastic. I really liked that he also did some Allman Brothers songs as well as his solo songs-it was a really nice mix of songs and styles. I had such a great time and will definitely be going to see him if he comes here again!

Report as inappropriate

Founding member of The Allman Brothers as well as successful solo musician, Gregg Allman has enjoyed a music career of more variety and celebration than most. The singer/songwriter is surely heading towards his 70th birthday, his live schedule remains demanding for a pensioner. He clearly loves doing what he does and every single round of applause seems to further determine why he continues to take to stage. It is always great to see somebody enjoying what they are doing and the good vibes between Gregg and his accompanying musicians are completely infectious.

It is obvious they go way back in terms of history and have been able to share this crazy musical experience together and this fully feeds into the performance. The fans have also shared in the journey and Allman thanks them for that, knowing that some people will have been around when he was first recording as part of The Allman Brothers so he shows gratitude for this relentless dedication. Demonstrating expert guitar playing ability on a cover of 'Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday Is Just as Bad)' by T-Bone Walker he then leads into 'Love Like Kerosene' to finish off the show.

First time visiting this venue. All in all, great experience. There really isn't a bad seat in the house. Man, these guys can jam. Wished I was born when Fillmore East was played. Greg Allman played 10 songs opening up with Statesboro Blues, throwing in some Whipping Post, Melissa, Midnight Rider and Soundbound. I hope at his age I have the energy Greg has. Hope one day the Allman brothers get back together.

Sixth Annual Allman Family Revival Tour to Honor Gregg Allman This Fall

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

Devon Allman has announced the sixth annual Allman Family Revival, which will see musicians paying tribute to the life and music of Gregg Allman . The 18-date tour kicks off in November and will feature the Devon Allman Project, Duane Betts , Donovan Frankenreiter , Maggie Rose , G. Love , and more.

“We are in the sixth year of saluting my Dad’s music and life for the Allman Family Revival, but it’s reaching beyond that initial sentiment,” Devon Allman said in a statement. “It’s galvanizing relationships within our generation of musicians. It’s continuing a tradition of feel based music and it’s an honor to put these shows on. Because at the end of the day I feel it’s way more about perpetuating this art form than it is about leaving our mark. Our true mark is simply the continuance, making sure we inspire the next in line to take the stage.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Allman Family Revival (@allmanfamilyrevival)

The Allman Family Revival initially began as a one-off concert in 2017 at The Fillmore in San Francisco to celebrate the late Gregg Allman’s life on what would have been his 70th birthday. It has since expanded into a full tour; last year it hit 18 cities around the U.S.

Devon Allman formed the Allman Betts Band in 2018 with Duane Betts, the son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts . They play a mixture of original songs and tip their caps to their fathers by adding a couple of Allman Brothers classics to each live show.

Other musicians on this year’s line-up, which varies by city, include Larry McCray, George Porter Jr., River Kittens, Orbi Orbison, Jimmy Hall, Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, and Luther Dickinson.

“My favorite part is just the joy of the audience,” Devon Allman added. “I can tell they are touched and getting every penny’s worth. Knowing Dad is looking down saying, ‘Damn, son, all that hot jammin’ for me?!’ I know he’s tickled that we celebrate him.  Because none of us has to do this.  We all have busy careers.  This is a ‘want to’ situation; absolutely, 100% about music and celebration and tribute.”

The Allman Family Revival tour kicks off Nov. 26 in Macon, GA at Macon City Auditorium and continues through December before concluding at The Fillmore in San Francisco on Dec. 17. Pre-sale tickets are available now with the code “Revival22,” while all tickets will go on sale Friday, Aug. 5 via the tour’s website .

Live albums, compilations, the gregg allman band, about gregg allman.

Gregg Allman was best known as lead singer, organist, and songwriter for the Allman Brothers Band, but he also found some success and popularity with his solo work, which was more soulful and less focused on high-wattage virtuosity. Allman's solo albums included Laid Back (1972), The Gregg Allman Tour (1974), and Playin' Up a Storm (1977), all for Capricorn Records, as well as I'm No Angel (Epic, 1987), which spawned the number one AOR title hit, Just Before the Bullets Fly (1988, Epic), and Searching for Simplicity (1997, Sony). In 2011, Allman released the T-Bone Burnett-produced Low Country Blues on Rounder Records, followed by the live CD/DVD set Back to Macon in 2015. Allman died in May 2017, before the slated release of the Don Was-produced Southern Blood. ~ Bruce Eder & Richard Skelly

Gregg Allman’s Grandson Makes Stage Debut With The Allman Betts Band

by Joe Vitagliano June 14, 2021, 11:57 am

For the Allmans, it’s a family tradition.

Videos by American Songwriter

Over 50 years since the original Allman Brothers Band became American music legends for crafting genre-defining Southern rock, their spirit, their legacy and their bloodlines still live on. Since 2019, the son of Gregg Allman, the son of Dickey Betts and the son of Berry Oakley have been performing as The Allman Betts Band. With two records and a series of tours under their belts, Devon Allman, Duane Betts and Berry Duane Oakley have forged a bluesy sound, perfectly suited for their catalog of inspired originals and heartfelt covers of their fathers’ songs.

Now, this past weekend, Gregg Allman’s grandson, Orion Gregory Allman, has made his first-ever on-stage appearance, hopping on the Hammond B3 for the Allman Betts original, “Pale Horse Rider.”

“My son has played piano since he was a little guy, but to see him getting mentored by John Ginty on the same instrument my dad was famous for—the Hammond B3 organ—was just such a trip!” Devon Allman said in a press release. “I thought he was just getting some tips, but he took the pro tips and then learned one of our songs on the spot and sat in with the band for the first time and it just blew my mind. Mind blown. Heart full. The road truly goes on forever!”

This past May marked four years since the passing of Gregg Allman—now, Jai Johanny Johanson and Dickey Betts are the only remaining members of the original Allman Brothers Band lineup. Yet, with the passion, reverence and creative energy of the next generation, it doesn’t seem like the musical heritage of any of these families will diminish any time soon.

The Allman Betts Band formed in 2019 and has released two studio albums. Check out their upcoming tour dates HERE and watch the official music video for “Pale Horse Rider” below:
