Keep reading to discover the most popular island-hopping routes from Santorini!

Are you ready to sail?

Why Santorini is the perfect base for island hopping

Santorini is the most romantic destination in the Aegean! It is an impressive island with picturesque hilltop villages and amazing red and black sandy beaches. It owes its scenery to many years of volcanic activity.

Santorini has a modern tourist infrastructure and unique natural scenery. It never fails to amaze visitors from all around the world! Millions of visitors visit it every year to experience the magical sunset at Oia and marvel at the view from the caldera!

It’s easy to get to Santorini! One can reach it either by ferry from Piraeus port or by flight from Athens airport and airports of other countries. After, visitors can ferry hop to the islands nearby to continue their holidays. This is the best way to have an unforgettable Cycladic experience!

From Santorini to Crete

To start with, a very interesting and convenient island-hopping route is from Santorini to Crete . Crete the largest and one of the most beautiful Greek islands.

These two islands have totally different landscapes and history. Nevertheless, they are both stunning! Santorini, with its volcanic formations and dreamy sunset views, is ideal for romantic and relaxing holidays. On the other side, Crete is perfect for relaxing at nice beaches, hiking in the mountains, visiting museums, and exploring historical sites.

The most important historical site in Crete is the Minoan Palace of Knossos. It is truly impressive! It was found almost intact, buried under the volcanic ash of Thera volcanic eruption. Today, millions of tourists visit it every year!

The regions of Heraklion and Chania are the most popular places in Crete. However, a drive around the island will bring you to many secluded spots that offer total privacy.

Did you know that Crete is famous for its gastronomy ?

From Santorini to Mykonos

Santorini to Mykonos is probably the most popular island-hopping route in Greece!

Santorini and Mykonos are wildly famous Greek islands. Young people and first-time visitors seem to love it. After all, how couldn’t they?

In fact, Mykonos is renowned for its wild party culture! In Mykonos, there are lots of beautiful beaches with cool beach bars that turn into party scenes.

The traditional architecture of Mykonos, which is characterized by whitewashed houses and narrow alleys, is also worth exploring.

From Santorini to Amorgos

Amorgos is situated on the southeastern side of the Cyclades. Undoubtedly, it is an island of great natural beauty .

What are the island’s standouts?

The sandy beaches, the mesmerizing deep blue sea, and the traditional architecture. Significantly, Amorgos is also widely known as the filming location of the classic movie “The Big Blue” by Luc Besson.

Take a walk around scenic villages… Have an adventure on the several hiking trails throughout the island… Enjoy spectacular views from the Monastery of Hozoviotissa, which is built on the top of a hill, overlooking the Aegean Sea.

From Santorini to Ios

Ios is one of the most popular destinations of the Cyclades. Arguably, it is an amazing island with golden sandy beaches and emerald waters.

Ios attracts travelers of all ages! This is because it has both secluded spots to swim and lively beaches for endless partying . Ios combines the traditional characteristics of Cycladic architecture with natural beauty and modern entertainment.

The most picturesque village of Ios is Chora. Chora -among others- has narrow paved streets and offers breathtaking views. It’s a must-visit!

It’s very easy to get from Santorini to Ios , as there are daily ferries in the summer. A trip from Santorini to Ios lasts for 40 minutes to 1 hour and a half, depending on the type of the vessel.

From Santorini to Milos

Only 2 hours from Santorini by ferry lies the wonderful island of Milos, famous for its unique volcanic landscape .

The charming and relaxing atmosphere of Milos makes it an ideal destination for couples and families. The lunar landscape of Sarakiniko… The exotic beaches with natural underwater caves, such as Kleftiko… The traditional fishing villages, like Klima… They all make this island unique!

From Santorini to Folegandros

As for the unspoiled island of Folegandros, it is easily accessible from Santorini . It boasts a wild natural beauty and has beautiful scenery.  What’s more, Folegandros has a relaxing atmosphere, away from the   crowds . Amazing, right?

The most picturesque spot in Folegandros is Chora. On a hill above Chora stands the white church of Panagia. It is the most beautiful site on the island!

As for the beaches in Folegandros, only a few of them are organized. However, the rest of them are secluded, thus ideal for those who seek privacy.

From Santorini to Anafi

Anafi is a wonderful, small island on the southeastern part of the Cyclades. It is famous for its amazing landscape and friendly atmosphere. Santorini is directly connected by ferry to Anafi about three times per week.

Visit the island of Anafi to swim in isolated , naturist beaches… Enjoy spectacular views over the Aegean Sea from the slopes of Chora… Anafi offers a whole heap of experiences!

Anafi retains its traditional character. Thus, it is not at all developed in terms of tourism. It is ideal for private holidays in Greece!

From Santorini to Paros, Naxos, and Koufonisia

Another fantastic choice is to island-hop from Santorini to Paros, Naxos, and Koufonisia.

This is an exciting tour , which gives visitors the chance to explore all these islands at once .

Hop next to Paros! Paros is a beautiful island with a cosmopolitan atmosphere in the Cyclades. It is renowned for its fun nightlife and amazing villages, like Naoussa and Parikia.

As for Paros beaches, they are mostly sandy and organized, ideal for windsurfing and kite.

Naxos is our next stop!

Naxos is a wonderful island ! It stands out for its fantastic beaches and the traditional villages in the countryside. It is a must-visit Greek island.

The last stop of the tour is the tiny Koufonisia island. Surprisingly, Koufonisia is a quiet place with exotic beaches, which one can reach by foot or bike.

Santorini Island Hopping: 5 Amazing Greek Islands Nearby

Scattered like pearls in the shimmering Aegean Sea, the Cyclades islands with their white-washed villages, blue-domed churches and sandy beaches present the classic image of Greece. So-called because of the circle they form around sacred Delos, the 20 or so Cycladic islands are the original and best place for island-hopping.

In this guide, we’ll share some of our favourite island combinations with Santorini and top tips for making the most of your Greek island-hopping adventure. Decide your place and pace on a Santorini Island hopping adventure – escapism in a Santorini Cave House before a hop to one of the Cycladic islands close by.

Experience another stunning Greek island on a Santorini Island Hopping Adventure

Santorini is ideally located and well connected for a spot of island hopping around the Greek islands. Whilst it’s easy to spend a week on Santorini and not get bored, there’s something special about island hopping in Greece. The excitement as you spot the shoreline from your sun-drenched ferry, the first glimpse of the port and the anticipation of exploring another island – this is what summer in Greece is all about.

How many islands should I visit?

For a 7-night holiday , we’d recommend you visit 2 islands . If you’d like to visit 3 islands, 9 days would be ideal. This will allow you sufficient time on each island to explore and relax whilst minimising the time and cost spent moving between islands.

How easy is it to island hop from Santorini?

Greece and its islands are generally well connected by ferry routes. In particular, the Cyclades island chain which Santorini is part of have an excellent inter-island connectivity, especially during the summer months. With the right planning and research a Santorini island hopping holiday is very easy to arrange.

Dos and Don’ts of island hopping from Santorini

  • Book your accommodation in advance. The days of turning up at the port and finding a really good place to stay are unfortunately over (unless you are really really lucky). For hidden gems in the Cyclades, check out i-escape.com.
  • When planning your Santorini Island hopping adventure, research and book your ferry tickets in advance . Ferries do get booked up quickly, especially the most popular ferry routes. Most accommodation requires you to check out by 11 am and check in at 3pm so where possible book a ferry which minimises the amount of time hanging around at the port or having to store luggage.
  • Allow enough time to get to the port by organising transportation from your accommodation to the port. It’s a 20-minute drive from Demeter Cave House to the ferry port (called Athinios ) and we recommend arriving at least 1 hour before your ferry is due to leave. Ask your accommodation on the other islands to arrange pick-up/drop-off at the port.
  • Don’t try to ‘do’ too many islands. Sure, island hopping is fun, but it can also be tiring. If you try to put too many islands into the itinerary, you could be spending a disproportionate amount of time on ferries, waiting for ferries and not actually being able to see much of the destination itself. That’s why we recommend 2 islands in 7 nights.
  • Allow for unexpected delays when travelling by ferry. We would not recommend you travel by ferry to catch you return flight on the same day.
  • Ask us for our personal recommendations. We’ve been fortunate to live in Greece for 15 years and visited quite a few of the islands. What’s more, quite a number of our guests have done some of the suggestions below so we have real experiences to share with you. Just send us a message and we’ll get back you to right away.

Our Top 5 Favourite Island Hopping Combinations from Santorini

1. santorini & mykonos : ibiza meets shirley valentine.

Why We Like This: Total contrast of landscapes and vibe; it combines the awe-inspiring, unique beauty of Santorini with the glamour, great beaches and vivid nightlife of Mykonos. Two Greek island supermodels in 1 trip!

Why Go to Mykonos?

Beautiful beaches, a great music and nightlife scene and top end restaurants and beach bars (you’ll need a decent budget in Mykonos!) The pretty main town or chora as its called is picture-postcard perfect; a pretty fishing harbour, its buzzing clubs and pubs, its trademark windmills, the area called ‘little Venice’ waterfront, and its clothes, jewellery and designer boutiques all vying for your Euro. Alternatively there are some beach resorts a short drive from Mykonos town if you like to be by the beach. Mykonos gets its fair share of visitors (as many as Crete!) in the summer months so don’t expect a sleepy Greek island.

Suggested Itinerary Fly to Santorini (either direct or via Athens), 4 nights in Santorini, 3 nights in Mykonos Fly from Mykonos to your home destination either direct or via Athens. (If you prefer to fly in and out of Santorini, we suggest 3 nights Santorini, 3 nights Mykonos, 1 night Santorini. It may also be possible to fly into Mykonos for 3 nights and fly out of Santorini after 4 nights)

Ferries between Santorini & Mykonos You have quite a bit of choice of ferries between Santorini & Mykonos, but we would recommend taking SeaJets World Champion Jet which based on 2011 schedule leaves Santorini port at 12:15 and arrives at Mykonos at 14:15 (price approx. 80 Euros)

Ferries between Mykonos & Santorini If you need to return from Mykonos to Santorini, then go for the SeaJets World Champion Jet or Power Jet leaving at 09:50 or 12:40 respectively arriving at 11:45 or 15:25 (approx. 80 Euros)

2. Santorini & Folegandros : the island to totally unwind

Why We Like This: You can combine Greece’s most photogenic and popular island, Santorini with the laid back and unspoilt Greek island of Folegandros, which is still off the normal tourist trail (although becoming popular!). What’s more the ferry journey is just 55 minutes (based on 2023 schedule)

Why Go to Folegandros?

One of the smallest and prettiest islands in the Cyclades, Folegandros makes you relax. With no airport and only 1 main road, holidays here are all about lazy days and even lazier evenings. This is really the place to unwind, grab a book and disconnect from the world. The main town called Hora has many delightful places to eat, most open air and the village is a typical whitewashed affair with breath-taking sea views. A rugged coastline indented with little bays and coves promises the clearest, turquoise waters – and a top tip is to take one of the round island boat trips which operate in the summer. Suggested Itinerary Fly to Santorini (either direct or via Athens) 3 nights in Santorini 3 nights in Folegandros, 1 night Santorini. (Note: there is no airport in Folegandros and the island is best reached from Santorini by ferry) For accommodation in Folegandros, we recommended i-escape who specialise in unique, boutique hideaways. Previous guests who have stayed with us at Demeter Cave House stayed at Anemomilos and Blue Sand Boutique Hotel and highly recommended them both. Ferries between Santorini & Folegandros There are limited options for travel from Santorini to Folegandros. Previous guests have taken the SeaJet SuperJet which leaves Santorini at 15:00 and arrives at 15:50 (based on 2023 schedule). The return from Folegandros leaves at 10:55 arriving 11:45.

3. Santorini & Milos : Mysterious and Magical

Why We Like This: A perfect duo of Cyclades islands. Santorini will capture your heart with romantic sunsets, jaw-dropping caldera views and pretty villages. Milos is all about it’s uniquely varied coastline with amazing beaches, coves and seaside villages – a catamaran or sailing trip around Milos island is an absolute must!

Why Go to Milos?

Home to over 70 beaches and being almost entirely volcanic, the coastline of Milos is one of the most varied of all Greek islands. Stand out beaches include the lunar landscape at Sarakiniko, the beautiful coves and arches at Kleftiko and the hidden beach at Tsigrado, accessible by boat or if you’re felling brave, a rope ladder. Highly recommend taking one of the sailing or catamaran cruises which circumnavigate the island, stopping off along the way for swimming and snorkelling.

Suggested Itinerary: Fly to Santorini (either direct or via Athens) 3 nights in Santorini 3 nights in Milos 1 night in Santorini Santorini to Milos Ferries Daily ferry connection expected with SeaJets. The SeaJet 2 leaves Santorini Port at 15:00 arriving at 17:05. For your return from Milos to Santorini, the SuperJet leaves Milos at 09:50 and arrives in Santorini at 11:45

4. Santorini & Paros: Pristine beaches and magical villages

Why We Like This: Paros has everything you could wish for from a Greek island, including amazing beaches, turquoise waters and pretty white-washed towns and villages. After three days enjoying the dramatic landscape of Santorini which appears on calendars around the world, Paros is an ideal combination for your Santorini island hopping adventure.

Ferries Santorini to Paros Getting to/from Paros is super easy as it’s on the main ferry route for quite a few different companies. Runs daily.

TOP TIPS: Stay in or close to Naoussa. By far the nicest town on the island.

5. Santorini & Naxos: The Cyclades island with everything

Why We Like This? One of the most varied and stunning islands in the Cyclades. Authentic villages, some of the best food we have eaten in Greece and beaches galore! We found a real gem too through i-escape called Kavos Naxos Hotel. If we had chance to escape for a few days in the season, this would be Number 1 on our list. And the food at this small boutique hotel was nothing short of exceptional.

Ferries from Santorini to Naxos As with Paros, there are many options to travel between Santorini and Naxos, with daily connections.

If we had one top tip it would to be not to try and visit too many islands on your Santorini island hopping adventure. It’s not just about ticking them off but surely spending enough time to explore, relax and recharge on these wonderful Cyclades islands.

Our golden rule : 7 nights 2 islands maximum.

Best Islands Near Santorini To Visit By Ferry

Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, and Milos are all popular Cycladic islands to visit by ferry from Santorini. This guide shows you how.

How to get to other islands close to Santorini

Want to know where to go after Santorini? This guide shows how to get from Santorini to the other islands in the beautiful Greek Cyclades.

Islands Near Santorini In Greece

The chic Greek island of Santorini needs no introduction. Famous for its sunsets, beautiful villages, and charm, Santorini is a bucket list destination for many people.

What many people do not realise though, is that Santorini is also a good gateway into the other Cyclades islands in Greece .

And what's not often talked about over the noise of the Santorini Instagram posts, is that these other nearby Greek islands are often just as charming and a lot more authentic!

Blue Star ferry at the port in Santorini

Which island to go after Santorini?

After you've visited Santorini, you have the option to visit other Greek islands nearby such as Mykonos , Naxos , Folegandros , Ios , Thirasia, and Anafi.

Many people choose to pair Santorini and Mykonos together, as these are the ‘big name' destinations in the Greek Cyclades island chain. Thinking to only do one of these? Check out my Mykonos vs Santorini post!

Islands Close To Santorini

There's more islands than just these in the Cyclades though. In fact, there's a total of 24 inhabited Cyclades islands in Greece!

It can make it a tough decision if you only plan on visiting this part of the world once in your life. Where on earth should you choose to go?

If you find yourself in this position, don't let me dissuade you from the classic Athens – Santorini – Mykonos itinerary . It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, so go enjoy!

If you might be returning back to Greece, and are feeling a little more adventurous, perhaps look beyond this and try to fit in a quiet island like Sikinos or Kimolos . You'll get a totally different perspective to Greece!

Best Greek islands to go near Santorini

You should note that when you are looking at where to go from Santorini, any island you choose is going to require you to take a ferry to get there. So, you get a Cyclades island hopping adventure at the same time!

When looking for islands close to Santorini by ferry, I'd suggest picking routes with no more than 2 hours travel time. There's lots of islands around Santorini which fulfill this requirement, so no worries!

Oh, and if you are looking for timetables and tickets for a ferry journey to other islands near Santorini, I suggest you use Ferryscanner .

Below, I'll give you a brief description of my top suggestions of islands to visit after Santorini. Underneath that, I'll show how you can get from Santorini to all the other islands in the Cyclades chain.

Of all the islands close to Santorini, there are perhaps 6 which are the best and the easiest to travel to afterward:

In a similar way to Santorini, Mykonos really needs no introduction. Or does it?

Reasons to visit Mykonos include amazing coloured seas like this one

It's probably wise to be clear on what Mykonos is all about. Namely, it's a place to see and be seen. A place to enjoy the nightlife, and cosmopolitan atmosphere. It also has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece.

You'll see Arabian Princes arrive on their yachts (many of which are bigger than Greek navy ships!), TV reality stars, and professional footballers. There's also ordinary people like you and me of course (unless you happen to be Royalty, a TV reality star or a professional footballer).

Mykonos is not the most authentic island in Greece, and the prices here are generally a lot higher than on other Greek islands. It does have really nice beaches , but a lot of them are covered with umbrellas and sunbeds for rent at prices that might make you intake your breath sharply.

Does Mykonos have it's redeeming aspects? Yes of course it does, but I'm pretty sure you've already read the glossy side about Mykonos, so now you can balance it against my view.

In short – the whole island is like a five star resort, so don't expect to see the budget side of Greece in Mykonos!

Read: How to get from Santorini to Mykonos

Now this wonderful island is much more like it!

Which Greek islands have the best beaches?

Let's describe Naxos as the family-friendly version of Mykonos. It has golden sandy beaches that at least equal if not exceed its more famous counterpart, but there are more of them.

Additionally, Naxos is the biggest island in the Cyclades, meaning that there's much more variety here. The fact that tourism, although an important industry, isn't the only one, gives Naxos a more authentic nature.

Add in great cuisine, quaint villages, historical sites, and lots of hiking trails, and you'll find that Naxos is a destination you might just want to return to again and again.

Folegandros

I've often heard people describing getting off the ferry from Santorini to Folegandros, and feeling as though there's been a weight lifted from their shoulders. Almost as if the island is a breath of fresh air.

Chora in Folegandros is where most tourists choose to eat and spend the evening

It's easy to see why. The island of Folegandros, whilst certainly not the undiscovered gem it was 30 years, still has a pace of life slow enough for it to feel more genuine than Santorini.

I particularly enjoyed taking some of the hiking trails, especially when hiking to Katergo Beach . Others say they enjoy the social atmosphere of eating evening meals outdoors in the square of the Chora.

If this is your first time to Greece, I'd recommend Folegandros as an island to visit after Santorini. It's a nice, gentle introduction to Greek island hopping, and the island caters well to English speaking tourists whilst at the same time makes you feel as though you have stumbled across a destination package holiday tours will never reach.

Read: How to get from Santorini to Folegandros

If Mykonos is the island where people with insane amounts of money go to party, then Ios is its more wallet-friendly cousin!

An amazing sunset over the Cyclades island of Ios in Greece

It has something of a reputation as a party island destination for 20 to 30 somethings, but at the same time you have to make an effort to reach it, as Ios does not have an airport.

There's been talk of Ios trying to wean itself away from party tourism, and I can say there's a lot more to the island than the nightlife, so they should do well.

I thought the beaches were very nice, especially the famous Mylopotas beach, and can honestly say that some of the best sunsets I've seen in Greece were in Ios. Check out my guide to  sunsets in Ios  if you don't believe me!

Read: How to get from Santorini to Ios

This is actually the closest island to Santorini. Even so, it remains an overlooked destination in the Cyclades.

Thirasia near Santorini in Greece

In all fairness, if you are visiting Santorini, you can pop over to Thirasia on a day trip from Santorini . Spend a couple of days though, and you'll find it has a very different pace of life than its far busier neighbor.

With just 150 permanent residents, and a handful of villages, it's a good place to escape to in order to avoid the Santorini crowds, appreciate the scenery, visit churches and monasteries, and also enjoy the views of the caldera and Santorini itself from a unique angle.

Read: How to get from Santorini to Thirasia

The island of Anafi is quite small, but has some amazing beaches and an interesting Chora. Anafi has an almost exotic feel to it, and for now, it remains something of an undiscovered gem.

How to travel from Athens to Anafi island in Greece

My advice – Visit while you can before it changes (not that it's likely to change any time soon). With a population of less than 300 and no airport, you can rest assured that hordes of tourists are never going to find Anafi – even if they had heard about it.

Some of the best things to do in Anafi include visiting the Kalamos Rock, the Monastery of Kalamiotissa, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, hiking, and of course enjoying plenty of beach time!

Santorini’s jaw-dropping landscapes, spectacular architecture, incredible food and wine culture, unique beaches and hard to believe history are more than enough to merit a trip to Greece, no matter how far you come from. However, I bet that many of you have wondered what lies further away from the deep blue waters of the island’s caldera.

Allow me to introduce you to the Cycladic and Dodecanese islands. Will one of them be the ‘next Santorini’? No. There is only one Santorini. But, these gems, don’t need to be. They all have their own distinct character and stunning sights able to provide you with one a kind experiences. All of them are a short boat ride from Santorini yet some of them feel worlds apart.

So, without further ado, here are the 5 best island hopping itineraries starting from or ending in Santorini. You can do all of these, completely on your own. No guides or ‘experts’ required. You don’t even need to speak a word of Greek (though you will get big smiles if you try!). Grab your friends, partner, family or no one, hop on a ferry and let’s explore some of the best corners of Greece.

TOP 5 SANTORINI ITINERARIES: NO1. THE SEAFARER’S ITINERARY

Mykonos evening view

The Seafarer’s Itinerary | Mykonos – (Ano) Koufonisi – Amorgos – Santorini

There are so many Greek islands worth exploring, each one offering something unique. One of the main goals of this blog is to cover as many as possible! However, I am fully aware that many people will not be able to visit Greece multiple times. For that once in a lifetime trip to Greece, the Seafarer’s itinerary might the best one to take .

The Seafarer’s itinerary will take you through some of the most photogenic islands in Greece. It also achieves a nice balance between super popular and off the beaten track destinations, ensuring you get the best of both worlds. You can live it up in Mykonos and Santorini and experience authentic, low-key island life in Koufonisi and Amorgos.

This is an itinerary filled with sun-drenched Cycladic whitewashed villages, cobblestone alleys, beaches with turquoise water and dramatic landscapes with jaw dropping views. This is a trip filled with one of a kind experiences.

TOP 5 SANTORINI ITINERARIES: NO2. THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S ITINERARY

Santorini Oia view church dome

The Photographer’s Itinerary | Santorini – Amorgos – Astypalaia

A trip bursting with endless views of the horizon. Clear skies in the morning, hazy at midday, bathed in colour during sunset, star-studded at night. The Photographer’s itinerary will quench a thirst for dramatic jagged cliffs dropping into the sparkling blue sea you never knew you had.

But there is more. When you are done with landscape photography, have a stroll around the cute streets of some of the most beautiful traditional villages in Greece, and thus, the world. The villages of Oia in Santorini, Amorgos’ Chora and Astypalaia’s Chora* are some of the best examples of stunning Cycladic architecture perfected to withstand pirate attacks, protect from ferocious winds and living life -literally- on the edge of a cliff…

While Santorini is the star of the show, I guarantee that you will absolutely fall in love with both Amorgos and Astypalaia and wonder why you have never heard of these islands before. This is one of my Santorini itineraries that I recommend to just about everyone.

*the term Chora is used by many Greek islands as a name for their capital town.

TOP 5 SANTORINI ITINERARIES: NO3. THE HONEYMOONER’S ITINERARY

Milos Papafragas cave

The Honeymooner’s Itinerary | Milos – Kimolos – Folegandros – Santorini

Don’t take the name of this itinerary too literally; replace honeymooners with couples. Honeymooner sounds more romantic though, no? After all, this is the most romantic of my Santorini itineraries .

Young couples have been flocking to Milos years before it became the new ‘it’ island of the Cyclades. And while in Milos, don’t you dare miss out neighbouring Kimolos. Then, there is Folegandros, a small, rocky outpost that charms everyone who wonders its thousand year old paths. Lastly, I guess I should mention that on a three day visit to Santorini, I witnessed two wedding proposals . I rest my case.

Frankly, I don’t think that anyone really knows why these islands attract couples more than other places. Maybe it’s the weird and wonderful beaches that require being in an Indiana Jone’s mood to access. The larger than life vistas or the glorious sunsets. The romantic restaurants and lack of intense nightlife .

Whatever it is, you will utterly and unequivocally fall in love with the jaw-dropping beaches in Milos, the crystal waters of Kimolos, the cute Chora of Folegandros and the one of a kind caldera view of Santorini. More than that, each island, in their own unique way, creates a heady atmosphere that is bound to seduce you, whether on a honeymoon or not.

TOP 5 SANTORINI ITINERARIES: NO4. THE REVELLER’S ITINERARY

Mykonos little Venice cafe

The Reveller’s Itinerary | Mykonos – Paros – Antiparos – Ios – Santorini

Let’s get loud.

But first, I need to clarify. The islands included in this itinerary are by no means only intended for partying. Personally, I have visited most of them with friends and my fiancé and you can definitely have a relaxing / romantic time in all of them. However, if you are looking for beach parties or exciting nightlife, you will definitely find that here too .

Mykonos will give you plenty of opportunities to revel in luxury amongst the international jetset, whether on the beach or in Chora. On the other hand, chic Paros will get you hanging out with a young, energetic crowd and so will hippy Ios. Last but not least, Antiparos is quite the dark horse. It is generally considered as an undiscovered, laid-back kind of a place, and it is. Nevertheless, you can easily find yourself seeing the sunrise with your shoes and a drink in hand !

Where does Santorini fit in all of this? Well, it is the outlier here, even though you will find some clubs in Fira. However, if you actually follow the whole itinerary through, I think you’ll very much welcome the change of scenery!

Best for? The young and young at heart .

TOP 5 SANTORINI ITINERARIES: NO5. THE ESCAPE ARTIST’S ITINERARY

Santorini Oia steps

The Escape Artist’s Itinerary | Santorini – Thirasia – Anafi

Last but certainly not least, the only itinerary I have not done yet (not even partially) but really want to. A combination of super popular Santorini (with all the good and less good things about that) and TRULY off the beaten track Thirasia and Anafi.

I often write in this blog about Greek islands that are off the beaten track. But most of them are not really that, at least for Greek people such as yours truly. Similarly, plenty of French and Italian travellers have been visiting these islands for years.

While this was not the case a decade ago, today, the list of actually off the beaten track Greek islands is getting smaller every summer. However, Thirasia and Anafi are still on that list, despite their close proximity to Santorini which brings me to another great thing about this itinerary. It is perfect for travelling slow but also for a fairly short trip.

Given the unique landscapes, Cycladic architecture and intrinsic small island charm of Thirasia and Anafi, I do expect that they are bound to become quite popular very soon. Escape artists, bohemian souls and those of you who have perfected the art of travel , don’t wait around, go now!

BEST TIME TO VISIT THE GREEK ISLANDS

June, July, August and early September is the best time to visit and fully experience the uniqueness of Greek summer . Note that there is usually a pleasant breeze in the islands that makes the heat quite bearable, even in high summer.

Late spring or early autumn may be more appropriate if you wish to go hiking or really hate the heat.

Best Island Hopping Day Trips from Santorini, Greece

Find the ride you need in.

Santorini is full of fun things to do, & so are other nearby Greek islands. Find out which ones make the best island-hopping day trips from Santorini.

buildings and shore on a Greek island

Enticed by its picturesque white-washed buildings and blue-domed churches, over 2 million visitors a year wander the cobblestone streets of Santorini—stopping at a Greek taverna here and popping into a craft shop there.

And while that sounds dreamy, you don’t have to stop there!

Why not take a few day trips from Santorini to other Greek islands and see what differences you can spot? You can hop over to the closest island in less than 35 minutes!

It’s too irresistible to say no, right?

We’ve compiled a list of the best day trips in and from Santorini to help you have a memorable trip in Greece.

  • Best Day Trips from Santorini

This brilliant Greek Island has plenty to offer. Still, it’s also pretty cool seeing what life is like on other islands close to Santorini—how the architecture differs, getting to try delicious specialties and meeting more locals.

Here are some of the best islands to visit from Santorini:

Mykonos

shores of Mykonos a day trip from Santorini

Santorini and Mykonos have become a dynamic duo. You don’t often hear one mentioned without the other. When you’re that close, it would be rude to visit one but not the other.

It’s said there are two sides to Mykonos.

The one you mainly see on social media showcasing the glitz and glamor. And the quaint and authentic side is filled with cobblestone streets, rolling countryside and windmills.

Visit as a day trip from Santorini to Mykonos and get a taste of both. Spend the day exploring white-washed towns and relaxing on some of the best beaches in Greece before dining in a top-notch restaurant overlooking the sea.

Check out  how to get from Santorini to Mykonos .

Ios, a day trip from Santorini

Ios is the nearest island to Santorini. You can get there by ferry in 35 minutes.

One of the most fascinating things about the islands is that every single one has its own charm and attracts different kinds of people. Santorini attracts visitors who can splash the cash, but Ios calls for budget travelers in Greece looking for a fun and cheap night out.

That’s not all the island has to offer. It has a more tranquil side, with traditional villages like Mangari and Paleokastro offering a glimpse at authentic island life.

Pro tip : If you’re on a budget, take the 1-hour ferry. It’s less than half the price of the fastest ship.

Here’s how to get from  Santorini to Ios for a day trip .

Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni

island near Santorini

Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni are volcanic islands in the Santorini caldera. Visiting these two islands is one of the most popular day trips from Santorini.

Boat trips start from as little as €30 ($33) and include a stop at the island of Thirasia (more on that below). The trips are packed with adventure—hike the volcano’s rim on Nea Kameni, splash about in the hot springs heated by the volcano’s thermal energy, and explore fascinating volcanic landscapes.

Pro tip : Try to find a boat tour that includes sunset. Sailing back with views of Santorini basked in a golden glow is an unforgettable sight.

coastline of an island near Santorini

Thirasia is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor. And that’s precisely why you should take a day trip from Santorini. It allows you to get a more authentic glimpse at local life on Greek Islands.

Grab a bite at a local taverna and try some of the island’s specialties, such as fava, a puree of split peas, and tomato keftedes—tasty tomato fritters. Once you’re full of delicious Greek food, wander the alleyways of the capital, Manolas, admiring the stunning views of the Aegean Sea.

Plenty of Santorini island tours offer day trips to Thirasia, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in one.

the beaches of Paros, a day trip from Santorini

Paros feels like a more laid-back Santorini.

It still has the white-washed buildings, blue-domed rooftops and turquoise waters; there are just fewer people. So, if you need a break from the hordes of people, island hop from Santorini to Paros.

Most ferries arrive in Parikia, the island’s main port and capital city. Wander the picturesque paved alleys, relax in a cafe, and explore The Church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani.

Hop in the car for 20 minutes and visit Naoussa. Once a fishing village, it is now the trendiest town on the island. Here you’ll find a lot of luxury boutiques and delicious restaurants.

Pro tip : The ferry ride is between 2 to 3.5 hours. Take the earliest one so you’ve got enough time. And the latest one on the way back.

Find out  how to get from Santorini to Paros.

Naxos

ruins of Naxos a day trip from Santorini

Ever harnessed the power of the wind to glide across the sea?

Naxos’ windy climate makes it the perfect place to try sailing, windsurfing or kitesurfing.

Not your speed?

Then you could watch others do it from your spot on the white powdery sand. Grab a book, relax or enjoy a bite from one of the tasty beach restaurants.

If you can spend the night in Naxos, wake up before the sun gets too hot, and take on Mount Zas. It’s the highest mountain in the Cyclades, standing 1,004 meters (3,294 ft) tall.

Read about  how to get from Santorini to Naxos .

Pro tip : The fastest ferry can get you there in 1.5 hours, leaving plenty of time to explore Naxos as a day trip.

blue sea and white sand of a Greek Island

Fast ferries  connect Santorini to Heraklion , the capital of Crete, in under 2 hours, meaning a day trip to Crete from Santorini is a great way to keep exploring.

Crete is the largest Greek Island, and with its size comes a plethora of things to keep you busy.

If you’re a history fanatic, you’ll love this island. It was once home to the Minoan civilization that left behind countless ruins and temples to explore and transport yourself back in time.

And when you need a break from exploring, go for a refreshing dip at the famous pink beach of Elafonissi.

Consider making it a multi-day trip so you can spend a day hiking Samaria Gorge, one of Greece’s most spectacular national parks.

Folegandros

coastline of Folegandros a day trip from Santorini

Being able to hop over to another island in only 50 minutes sounds too good to resist.

Despite being one of the islands closest to Santorini, Folegandros has remained a hidden gem.

The main village, Chora, is just as picture-perfect as Santorini, with its narrow cobblestone streets, white-washed houses and vibrant bougainvillea. But getting a picture without any photobombers will be a million times easier!

Spend your time on the island relaxing on Katergo, a stunning and untouched beach that’s only accessible by boat or by foot.

Check out  how to get from Santorini to Folegandros .

Anafi

winding roads and sea of Anafi Greece

Most people haven’t heard of the island of Anafi, which makes it even more tempting to visit. You can reach this island in just over an hour.

A day trip from  Santorini to Anafi  is a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. The majority of this small island has been left untouched, leaving a rugged and wild, exciting landscape to explore.

If hiking in the Greek heat is too much, enjoy the island’s quiet sandy beaches and make the most of the incredible hospitality of the island—one of the perks of visiting lesser-known destinations.

You’ll feel so relaxed after visiting that you might not want to go back!

  • Fun Day Trips in Santorini

Santorini is surrounded by fascinating islands to explore, but there are also many things to do without leaving the island.

If you only have one day in Santorini, it’s going to be tight, but here are some must-see places:

crowds in Oia Santorini

Oia is one of the most popular towns where many visitors stay. If your accommodation isn’t based here, a day trip is a must!

You might have already seen photos of the island’s iconic sunset spot packed with people. That’s in Oia!

But before sunset, the best way to explore is to simply get lost in its labyrinth of white-washed houses, windmills and beautiful churches. Duck under the brilliant fuchsia bougainvillea that hangs throughout the streets. Check out the cafes, rooftop bars with incredible views, art galleries and craft shops.

Make sure your phone is fully charged, as the photo opportunities are endless.

Fira, also known as Thira, is Santorini’s capital city and the island’s art and culture capital.

Perched on the edge of the caldera, Fira offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the nearby volcanic islands, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni.

Here you’ll find some of the island’s best restaurants, cafes, and lively nightlife.

A completely different side of Santorini can be seen in Akrotiri.

Around 1600 BC, this once prosperous Minoan port city was buried beneath an immense amount of ash when a giant volcanic eruption blew the middle right out of the island.

Hidden from the world, the city wasn’t discovered until the 1860s. It’s now a fascinating archaeological site that shows what life was like for the Minoans.

Entrance costs €12 ($13) for adults.

Megalochori

old village of Santorini

Magalochori gives a glimpse of what Santorini was like before mass tourism moved in. This charming traditional village showcases the island’s preserved architecture and cultural heritage.

Visit the traditional cave houses and mansions built with high and thick walls to keep the pirates out.

If you want a taste of authentic Greek food, stop at one of the tavernas.

Pyrgos lies in the center of Santorini on the slopes of Mount Profitis Ilias, the highest point on the island.

Head to Kasteli Castle for panoramic views of the entire island and the sparkling Aegean Sea. It’s also a great sunset spot away from the crowds in Oia.

If you’re a wine-lover, stop off at the nearby Santo Wines, one of the most famous wineries in the region. They offer wine tours and tastings for €12 ($13), so you can try some of their delicious reds, whites, roses, and dessert wines.

Red, White and Black Sand Beaches Around the Island

Santorini’s beaches are a highlight…and a bit different.

Across the island, you’ll find white,  red  and  black sand beaches  created from eroded volcanic material and lava fragments. These otherworldly beaches are like none other, and no trip to Santorini is complete without beach-hopping to a few.

  • Weather in Santorini and its Nearby Islands

The warm and sunny days start to appear towards the end of April, with summer weather coming into full force in June.

Summer temperatures range from 25°C (77°F) and soar to 35°C (95°F) in July and August when visitor numbers are highest. So, if you don’t like crowds, go in the shoulder months of June and September.

The weather is still warm in September; just make sure to bring a jumper as the nights begin to get cooler.

Winter begins in November and lasts until the end of March. The average temperature hovers around 13°C (55°F) during this time. Many tourist restaurants and shops are closed during this time.

Yes! Day trips from Santorini are very easy due to the number of ferries connecting it to nearby islands. Some popular islands to visit as day trips include Mykonos, Ios and Naxos.

Mykonos island hopping

Starting on with Mykonos, which is undoubtedly the most cosmopolitical destination among the Greek islands, this island stands out mostly for its legendary summer parties, the beautiful sandy beaches, the award-winning exquisite restaurants, and the luxurious lifestyle. A small and easily explored island for those who want to have a… lively time. As it is said, Mykonos is the island that never sleeps! Truth? Well, in contrast with Santorini which is the most romantic destination on earth, Mykonos would be a perfect choice for the youngest or singles or a party of friends! Any tip for the island?

  • Choose Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach if you are a party lover. Choose Elia and Ornos Beach if you are a peaceful lover!

  • Preferably rent a car and be patient with the parking as it is quite limited.
  • Note that the buses run every approximately 30 minutes and the taxis are quite scarce & expensive.
  • While in Mykonos follow the motto: tan, drink, dance, repeat!

Naxos island hopping

Although Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades complex, a short-term getaway there could be a convenient and adventurous idea! Naxos can offer you generously marvelous long sandy beaches, rich archeological history, and charming alleys for singular shots at the picturesque old town, Chora. Naxos is an attractive choice for those who love sports. It offers a surplus of mountainous hiking trails with striking vistas of green uplands and greenish-blue seas. It also has ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing mostly at Laguna, Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios, and Plaka beaches! Additionally, note that if you love Greek food then Naxos is your island! The great agricultural activity of the island offers delicious and authentic Greek dishes well-known all over Greece! Last but not least, although Naxos is being considered as a “family” destination, the island’s nightlife will fascinate you.

Folegandros  island hopping

What can we say for this hidden gem of Aegean… A breath away from Santorini, the unknown for many tourists Folegandros, can offer you a tranquil stopover with a bohemian vibe and an authentic Greek beauty you will never forget! Its clifftop Chora town, one of the most picturesque spots of the island, is built 200 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by charming white houses with tiny courtyards that carry a folkloric Cycladic aura! An impressive white Church at the top of the hill offers breathtaking panoramic vistas. Old-fashioned tavernas offer a delicious savoy journey to the island’s specialties like matata (fresh homemade pasta), kalasouna pie (pie with local goats’ cheese and lightly caramelized onions), and souroto cheese! Folegandros is a small, easily explored island. Apart from Hora, it has only two other main settlements, Karavostasi (the port of Folegandros) and Ano Meria.

  • Don’t rent a car! You can explore almost the entire island on foot. Pack a pair of comfortable shoes!
  • Visit the Folkone Museum.
  • Be aware that there is no bank on the island only a few ATMs.

Anafi island hopping

Anafi is a small, peaceful, and less touristic island. It is positioned in the south of the Cyclades among Santorini and Astypalaia. According to mythology, Anafi owes its name to Apollo God who created the island from the waters of the Aegean to protect the Argonauts, who suffered from the strong storms. Its beautiful and truly unspoiled main town, Chora, is built amphitheatrically on the hill, at an altitude of 200 m. It mostly stands out for the all-white traditional houses with the domes on the roof, the kalderimia -narrow stone streets, and the ruins of the ancient Venetian castle. A dreamy island for those who desire a simple way of life and for those who seek genuine contact with nature, close to its hospitable inhabitants! An island with a great wild natural environment, crystal clear waters, and serene sunsets.

As far as the beaches, on the south side of Anafi, the shores are sandy, windless, and more popular while on the north side of the island the beaches are rockier and quieter. Last but not least, Naxos is an interesting choice for those who love fishing as it offers a wide variety of fish!

By boat! The ferry from Santorini takes around 1,5 hours! You may choose between 2 different ferries that run daily in the high season period. The average price of the ticket is €20.

  • Note that there is no bank on the island only one ATM at the port.
  • Hike to Kalamos in the south-east of the island, the top of the second-highest monolith in Europe.
  • Watch the sunset at the old Venetian Castle.
  • Book your accommodation as early as possible, as the hotels are limited.

Ios island hopping

If we have to describe Ios with three words, that would be fun, fun, and fun! Ios is the closest to Santorini island. It took its name from the word “ion” -which means flower-, since the island was full of flowers in the past. Ios can offer you all-day dancing against the backdrop of impressive Cycladic landscapes.

island hopping tours from santorini

Once a paradise of hippies back in the 70s, Ios is still more appealing mainly to younger ages, however, this shouldn’t prevent anyone from visiting it. The main village, Chora, is amphitheatrically built on a hillside filled with charming whitewashed houses. It is a tranquil neighborhood bursting with shops and restaurants during the day while during the night is surprisingly transformed into one big party! Not even to mention that a lot of the nightclubs at Ios open the doors after 3:00 am when the party officially gets started! The island features around 33 long and small golden beaches. Blue flags are almost yearly awarded to its spotless crystal blue waters! Milopotas, Magganari, and Plakes are the most notable beaches on which water sport’s lovers can have a great time!

By boat! The ferry from Santorini takes less than 1 hour! You may choose between two different ferries that run daily in the high season period. The average price of the ticket is 30€.

island hopping tours from santorini

  • Rent a car if you want to visit the beaches that are away from Chora. However, note that Chora is comfortably approachable and explorable on foot.
  • Taste local cheeses like “skotyri” (soft goat cheese with herbs), “sougli” (small pancakes made of flour, water, and olive oil), the traditional sweet of watermelon, and definitely “matsi” (a kind of handmade pasta).
  • Book your accommodation away from the party centers (Chora & Mylopotas) if you are a traveler who looks for quietness.
  • Do scuba diving! Τhe almost transparent seabed under the clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea will enchant you!

Milos island hopping

Just like Santorini, Milos, a spectacular volcanic island with a horseshoe shape, was created after an eruption and it is mostly famous for the almost 70 heavenly, turquoise, and white-gold unearthly beaches. The island on which the famous statue of Aphrodite was discovered and now is being presented in the Louvre Museum, is the perfect getaway for romantic couples, families with kids, swimming, diving, snorkeling, and trekking lovers! Plaka, the island’s capital city, follows respectfully the typical Cycladic architecture. Sarakiniko, on the northeastern part of the island, is the most / visited and photographed destination of the island. What makes Sarakiniko unique? Its exquisite crystal blue water makes swimming an unforgettable experience. Its geological particularity gives visitors the impression of standing on the surface of a moon!

By boat! The ferry from Santorini takes around 5 hours! You may choose between four different ferries that run daily in the high season period. The average price of the ticket is €75.

  • If you have more than one day on the island try an organized sailing. It is the best way to explore all the beautiful beaches of Milos and to swim to Kleftiko caves!
  • Visit Klima, the most famous and colorful village on the island, and don’t stop shooting!
  • Watch the sunset from the Castle in Plaka.
  • Visit the Milos Mining Museum and spend an interesting and educational evening.

island hopping tours from santorini

Overall, although Santorini is one of the most striking and distinct Greek islands, visiting one of its neighbors will make your Greek island hopping experience much more fun! However, if you are looking for a day trip from Santorini, the only island we do recommend visiting is Anafi whereas, for all the remaining, at least one night of stay is highly recommended. Βon voyage!

The Ultimate Guide to Santorini Island

island hopping tours from santorini

Our guide to Santorini runs through all the ins and outs of this stunning island, where ancient history, unforgettable sunsets, and modern luxury collide.

Oh, Santorini – the jewel of the Aegean. There are loads of reasons why this island is the most-visited in the whole of the Cyclades chain, and one of the most-visited in the country (only Crete can muster more).

For one, just look at it! The whole place is set on a collapsed volcano, with cinnamon-tinted rock rising straight out of the clear seas to craggy summits where chalk-white villages drift like clouds along a caldera rim. Up there, towns like Oia and Thira are now the stuff of legends, fodder for travel brochures the world over. They host bougainvillea-strewn tavernas, luxury cave hotels with infinity pools, and mysterious Orthodox churches that bring a blaze of turquoise blue to the skylines.

island hopping tours from santorini

Yep, it's hardly a wonder that Santorini is now one of the first names on any Greek island-hopping itinerary. Come here to witness sunsets that blaze ochre and vermillion across a boat-dotted sea. Choose this one for rust-red beaches and dramatic sailing trips to smoke-belching volcanic islands. Come to explore one of the country's most iconic destinations.

What's in this guide to Santorini?

Where is santorini, exactly, when to visit santorini, things to do in santorini, the best beaches in santorini, how to get to santorini.

Santorini is often said to be smack dab in the heart of the Greek Aegean. Roughly midway between Crete (the largest and southernmost island) and the capital of Athens, it's one of the most famous islands in the Cyclades chain. Its nearest neighbours are relatively unknown Anafi just a touch to the east, and the party island of Ios, which sits around 11 miles to the north.

island hopping tours from santorini

Santorini is downright stunning no matter the time of year. However, we'd say that the best time to visit is during the shoulder season months of April and May, or September and October. The crowds thin out just enough for you to enjoy a touch of solitude on the pebble coves then, while the bars and tavernas and hotels that offer caldera views won't be anywhere as near as busy (or expensive!).

Santorini in summer (June-August)

The peak season in Santorini gets rolling in earnest by early June. It's a great time for the sun seekers and the tanners, because daily averages in this part of Greece sit plum in the upper 20s and low 30s. There's often simply zero rainfall and cloud coverage, too, which means you're all but guaranteed those jaw-dropping sunset shows in the evening. The downside here is that you'll need to contend with booming visitor numbers. The vast majority of Santorini's 500,000 annual arrivals come during this balmy season.

island hopping tours from santorini

Santorini in autumn (September-November)

For us, there's simply no better time to be in Santorini – scratch that, anywhere in Greece! – than during the autumn. Yes, the temperature dips a touch, but only to a positively-pleasant 22-25 degrees. On top of that, the crowds go to just a fraction of what they were only a month before, which kicks down the hotel rates and the cost of flights (stats show November is one of the cheapest months of the year to fly in from London, for example). The only real downside is the chance of chilly evenings and some rain.

island hopping tours from santorini

Santorini in winter (December-February)

Don't discount a trip to Santorini in winter. Okay, so you'll need the woollies and a raincoat, because there are some downpours (although average rainfall is just 44mm in December – a tenth of what it is in Wales!). The upside is that crowds are about a fifth of what they are in June and July. Everything from the lookout points to the hiking trails has a deserted feel to it. Only the bravest will swim in the Aegean in the winter, mind, and lots of tavernas and hotels close completely for the season.

island hopping tours from santorini

Santorini in spring (March-May)

Spring is another sweet spot for island-hopping your way to Santorini. Temperatures work their way from an average high of 16 in March to a laze-on-the-balcony 22 in May. Meanwhile, average flight prices from London hover around the £190 return mark – about 30% less than in the high summer. Sailors and yachters particularly like the spring because of the strong and regular winds, but it's also fantastic for foodies and wild swimmers looking to dodge the rush of June.

island hopping tours from santorini

We'll be honest – Santorini isn't your usual kick-back-and-relax Greek island. Everything from sailing trips to snorkelling adventures to wine tasting awaits in these parts, making it a fantastic destination for more adventurous and active types. That's not to say there isn't any R&R on offer. It's just that most of the chilling is done in sleek tavernas or by the poolside of your boutique cave hotel. Anyway, here's a look at all the top things you should totally have on the to-do list…

Ancient Thera

Ancient Thera soars high on the peaks of the Mésa Vounó mountain, on the far eastern edge of Santorini. It's far away from the famous cave hotels and infinity pools, offering a glimpse at the rich ancient past of the island. Excavations have revealed traces of human habitation at the spot going back to the 7th millennium BC! You can do tours of the dig site to see the remnants of an old theatre, a forum, a marketplace and several bathhouses. Oh, and the views up there are spectacular to boot.

island hopping tours from santorini

Everywhere in the Aegean is a potential dive destination, but Santorini manages to take things to the next level. The rocky nature of the island means that the surrounding waters stay very clear, which increases underwater visibility. In fact, average visibility in these parts hits a whopping 40m. More than that, Santorini is known for its volcanic dive sites. They include a long-lost shipwreck around the rock formations of Nea Kameni island and the magma clusters of the Faros Reef.

island hopping tours from santorini

Fira to Oia hike

Some say that the Fira to Oia hike is the best hike in Greece. We wouldn't go that far (this is the home of Mount Olympus, remember?) but it's certainly a fantastic ramble. The route links up two of the most beautiful villages on the island, skirting the top of the famous caldera rim as it goes. It's around four hours in total, weaving through church-topped towns like lovely Imerovigli and over historic donkey trails with gorgeous views. Be sure to take the detour to Skaros Rock if you've got time – it looks more Sri Lanka than southern Med!

island hopping tours from santorini

Tastings at Santo Wines

Wine buffs will be pleasantly surprised to see that Santorini is one of Greece's official viticulture regions. It's thought that wine has been made in these parts since ancient Roman times. There's mineral-rich volcanic soil to help with all that, and now a handful of pretty spectacular wineries that perch high on the cliffs. One of the top-rated spots is Santo Wines, which has a wrap-around terrace to offer a backdrop of sea and cloudless skies for tasters. Talk about romantic!

Sailing trips

No guide to Santorini could possibly be complete without mentioning the epic sailing that happens around this island. You don't have to be a seasoned skipper to enjoy it, either. There are loads of day trips on catamarans or pirate ships that whisk you out of the port at Órmos Athiniós in the early morning. Stops typically include the smaller volcanic island of Nea Kameni in the caldera, and Nisis Palaia Kameni, where you can bathe in strange coastal hot springs.

island hopping tours from santorini

This land of high-perched lux hotels and strange volcanic mountains isn't actually that famous for its beaches. And it's true – Santorini isn't even close to the top beach destination in Greece. The only real stretches of sand are on the remote east coast. Those on the caldera side are mainly cliff-backed coves that can be a nightmare to get to. That's not to say there aren't some corkers. There are, and no self-respecting guide to Santorini could ignore…

Red Beach can be hard to find. It lurks at the base of a huge cliff south of the ancient town of Akrotiri. A rocky path wiggles down from a car park above, soon revealing a thin sliver of black-sand beachfront that's framed by high walls of scarlet stone on all sides. The effect is to make the Aegean look bluer and clearer than ever. One warning: Red Beach draws in the biggest crowds, so you might want to consider some alternatives during the high season…

island hopping tours from santorini

White Beach

White Beach is just one headland around from Red Beach. But the colours of the rock change dramatically as you sail past the ochre-tinged cliff, switching to a shimmering alabaster that glints in the beating sun. White Beach is always way less busy on account of the fact that you have to get a boat taxi there. The beach itself is actually made up of black pebbles, but the cliffs behind are as white as clouds.

island hopping tours from santorini

Kamari Beach

Kamari Beach sits on the remoter, less-trodden east coast of Santorini. It's more your classic vision of relaxed Greek sand, with umbrellas and sunbeds strewn out before a lightly lapping Aegean. Again, it's got dark, volcanic sand, but also oodles of amenities – there's a dedicated lifeguard here in the main season, along with outdoor showers and a couple of tavernas to boot. It's the perfect place for families.

island hopping tours from santorini

Perissa Beach

The coffee-coloured powder of long and wide Perissa Beach skirts the south-eastern edge of Santorini. Again, that puts it away from the crowds. However, it's still a firm family favourite on account of the buzzy beach bars and the affordable accommodation that sits in the town just behind. Blue-flag Perissa is also famed for its clear waters, which draw lots of swimmers and snorkelers.

island hopping tours from santorini

Unlike many of the other east-coast beaches on Santorini, Pori has golden sand and red-tinged cliffs floating high above. You get there by heading east from Oia past the dramatic Columbo Cape, though pockets of rough farm fields and vineyards carved into the volcanic mountainside. This guide to Santorini would call it one for those who are keen to escape the crowds and go off the beaten path.

island hopping tours from santorini

There are really only two ways you can reach Santorini: By sea and by air. Thankfully, because this one is firmly among the top three most popular destinations in the country, there are plenty of flight and ferry connections. What's more, Santorini remains well linked to Athens by plane and boat during the low season, which isn't true of many of the other, more-seasonal Cyclades isles.

Santorini ferries

Santorini is now a major destination on most Greek island-hopping itineraries. The upshot? It's something of a transportation hub for ferries heading in and out and across the Aegean. You can usually rest assured there's a route that will suit, no matter if you're coming in fresh from seeing the Acropolis in Athens or just jumping over from a nearby island like Milos or Folegandros. Here are some of the most popular ferry routes into Santorini:

  • Milos to Santorini (€18-55/2-5 hours)
  • Popular island-hopping routes around the Cyclades
  • Crete to Santorini (€25-60/2-6 hours)

Santorini flights

The Santorini National Airport, also known as the Thira Airport, or just Santorini Airport, has risen and risen in recent years to become one of the major arrival points for the central Aegean. It now caters for just over 2.5 million passengers annually. Many of the arrivals are charter flights that run seasonally between May and August. However, there are also year-round domestic and international routes on both low-cost and flag-carrying airlines.

Private & Luxury Santorini Boat Tours For Unforgettable Experiences

Jul 28, 2021 | BLOG

island hopping tours from santorini

Exploring Santorini’s beauties from the comfort, privacy, and elegance of a luxury yacht, catamaran, or cruiser is one of the most rewarding escapades when visiting the island. Most Santorini boat tours are usually guided and open to a few participants at a time. However, there are plenty of options offering customized routes and itineraries and are totally private.

Here are some details about the most exclusive boat tours that will enable you to discover magical locations that justify Santorini’s fame as the Queen of the Cyclades.

What to expect from a luxury boat tour in Santorini

island hopping tours from santorini

The majority of Santorini boat tours are run by individuals or groups of individuals with immersive sailing experiences. This applies from top to bottom and includes from the CEOs to the qualified captains and crew members who accompany you at all times to ensure your safety and maximum enjoyment. These companies own fleets that meet the highest security standards and provide the smoothest and fastest sailing cruises and elevate your comfort with lavish, upscale experiences.

Feel like setting sails for the open sea and discover the charms of the other Greek islands near Santorini? Or perhaps having a cruise around the island to admire a heart-stopping Santorini sunset and visit its unique volcanic beaches? Whatever the case may be, the adventure you are about to have will definitely be unforgettable. Feel free to relax on the deck as the enchanting Aegean Sea breeze makes the entire getaway even more gratifying.

Regarding the complimentary facilities included in most private cruises, these could consist of welcome drinks, dinner on board, transportations from and to the Maison Des Lys Santorini suites with private pool and snorkeling gear.

Boat Tours Options

Santorini’s coastal scenery is absolutely captivating and can best be enjoyed through a private catamaran or motor yacht cruise that will take you to all the famous Santorini beaches while having lunch or BBQ or enjoying a glass of the finest local wine on board and visiting the highlights of each destination. The most beloved shores and sites are those of the southern coast, such as the Red Beach, picturesque Ammoudi Bay, famous black-sand beach at Perivolos, imposing Caldera,  striking Black Mountain, and the scenic Pori area with the crystalline waters.

island hopping tours from santorini

Such Santorini boat tours are usually daytime options and last around 4-6 hours. Depending on the route you take, you could be swimming by the infamous Santorini volcano and reaching remote and secluded shores. Also, relax at the Hot Springs, have a meal at a seaside tavern, and/or spoil yourself with the surprises your crew has for you and your friends, family, or partner just before the sun sinks behind the horizon, offering you the most idyllic sunset views ever seen.

These private Santorini boat tours can either be half- or full-day cruises. In the latter case, expect exciting expeditions to explore the small volcanic islands adjacent to or near Santorini, such as Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni, Thirasia, and Aspronisi. The beauties that lie within these charming little dots on the map are simply amazing.

Ready to celebrate your Santorini honeymoon ? Propose to your loved one? Commemorate an anniversary in glorious sunsets? Then a sunset cruise may probably be ideal for you. It will be just the two of you amidst the shimmering Mediterranean Sea with the calm, crystalline waters and the descending sun as a romantic backdrop, creating a dreamy scenery and amplifying emotions away from the crowds.

Where do these boat tours start from? All tour companies offer a private shuttle from the Maison Des Lys Santorini luxury hotel to the port or beach from where you will set sails.

Private island-hopping tours

As already mentioned above, you may opt for one of the available private Santorini boat tours to other Cyclades islands. An Ios island tour is a highly sought-after cruise that introduces you to the incomparable allures of the magnetic island with the golden sand coastline and the azure waters. Ideal for swimming and snorkelling, Ios gives the tour a pleasurable flair that may even be infused with local flavour and tastes, and visits to the adorable whitewashed houses and the lovely blue-domed churches.

Other island tours you might be interested in are those stopping at the :

  • Virgin island of Anafi with the picture-perfect villages and breath-taking scenery.
  • Cosmopolitan island of Mykonos with the legendary parties and VIP lifestyle.
  • Folegandros island, whose untouched land and its exotic beaches will steal your heart for sure.

Of course, you can have the itinerary designed to meet your specific needs. Just ensure you communicate your particular occasion or requirements with the Santorini boat tours organizers a bit ahead of time, so that they can plan out all the details for a seamless and utterly indelible sailing experience.

When the cruise comes to an end, expect a modern air-conditioned shuttle van to bring you back to your Maison Des Lys Luxury Suites – one of the very few resorts and Santorini hotels with a private pool – to close the day with stunning sea panoramas and all the VIP services and pampering you are used to.

Best time for travel greece island hopper featuring athens, mykonos and santorini.

While just about any month is great to visit Greece, there are a few prime times of the year for the Greece Island Hopper tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Santorini, Mykonos, and other Greek islands open to tourists in mid- to late April. While the weather is mild, most find the beaches are still chilly for swimming or sunbathing. Minimal crowds yield maximum photo opportunities.

Summer: July and August in Greece are hot! (In extreme heat, it’s possible for the Acropolis to be closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers and visitors.) During the summer season, tours only run in early July and late August, when temperatures aren’t as extreme. It’s during these months when many Greeks and other Europeans vacation here, too, making it a busy time to visit.

Fall: With kids back to school, September and October are great times to go on tour. Greece remains very busy, as the tourist season on Santorini and Mykonos extends into October, and the water temperatures offer perfect swimming conditions. There may still be crowds at the Acropolis and other popular sites along the way.

On Tour Air Included

  • The cost of all internal flights on tour or within an extension are included into the total tour cost on our website and brochures.
  • Purchasing internal flights through Collette is now required on tours where applicable.
  • This price continues to exclude all round-trip air getting to and from the tour, as well as any additional air segments required to arrive at or depart from an extension.

Extend your tour longer with a 3-night stay in Istanbul, Turkey’s most popular city. Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures and legendary architecture. As the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, walk in the footsteps of centuries of travelers before you. From the towering Hagia Sophia to the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, you’ll find an indescribable blend of nostalgia and modernity. Full of authentic flavors and legendary cultures, a trip to Turkey is not one you’ll soon forget.

  • Athens - Istanbul, Turkey
  • Fly to Istanbul,* Turkey’s most popular city. Considered to be the bridge between the East and the West, Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures, complicated history, and legendary architecture. The city was the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires – which is seen through its blend of times-gone-by nostalgia and ever-evolving modernity. This evening, kick-start your exploration of Istanbul by sampling Turkish cuisine during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Discover the city with a local guide. Start your morning at the famous Hagia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Wisdom. At the time it was built, this massive cathedral was the largest in the world. Continue on to the Blue Mosque,** where vibrant blue tiles line the building’s opulent interior walls. This morning also includes a visit to Topkapi Palace, the main residence of sultans of the Ottoman Empire. After free time for lunch, continue exploring Istanbul with your local expert. Make your way through the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, surrounding yourself with artisan crafts, buzzing energy, and exciting vendors. Enjoy an evening at leisure.
  • Start your day with a relaxing cruise on the Bosphorus, and see the city from a different vantage point. The rest of the day is yours! Explore the local boutiques or maybe taste the culture through Turkish favorites. Perhaps you will choose to go on an optional excursion to a Hammam Turkish bath, where you’ll enjoy an authentic scrub and foam bath.
  • Istanbul - Tour Ends
  • Your tour ends today.

Hotel-Titania Hotel Athens

Immerse yourself in the flavors of the Cycladic Islands during a tour of Mykonos’ culinary gems. Begin the morning at a local farm where you learn about the traditions and history of cheese making, a craft that in Mykonos achieves almost the status of a local art form with secrets passed down through the generations. Sample Xinotiro, Kopanisti, and Vrasto cheeses and freshly-made yogurt, all produced at the farm. Later, explore more flavors of the island at a local bakery before visiting Ano Mera, a traditional rural village with picturesque whitewashed chapels and iconic blue trimmings.

Make the most of a day at leisure and see all that Greece has to offer with an island-hopping adventure! Set sail for the tiny islet of Nea Kameni – an uninhabited island that is formed on an active volcano. Make your way up the side of the still-active volcano with your local guide, pausing at the top of the crater for unparalleled views. After exploring, return to the boat to set off for your next destination – Palea Kameni. Similar to Nea Kameni, this islet is also of volcanic descent. Jump into the water and swim to the island’s rejuvenating hot springs, where you will find ethereal sulfuric waters and therapeutic mud - or choose to relax on the boat. Continue on to Thirassia, an authentic island that embodies the traditional culture of Greece. Enjoy a Greek buffet onboard and take in an unparalleled view of the island as you dine. After dinner, make a stop close to Oia as the sun sets. Marvel as the sky turns shades of orange and gold before sailing back to port.

Take a step into the past with a half-day excursion to the island of Delos, the fabled birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. After a quick 30-minute boat ride, allow your guide to introduce you to this sprawling UNESCO site. See how the Greek myths intertwine with prehistoric ruins, passing through narrow streets from the Hellenistic age. Tour the awe-inspiring House of Dionysus, a relic from the 4th-century BC containing ancient mosaics and preserved columns. Peruse the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Lake, and the guardian Naxian Lions with your guide before enjoying time to explore independently. Take in views of the Sacred Island of Delos as you ferry back to Mykonos.

Join a local expert in Athens and explore the city's world-renowned sites.

Santorini island hopping (4 magical Greek islands)

By Ferriesingreece on 15-05-2018

Share this post:

Well, traveling with a ferry from Santorini to Mykonos is one of the most popular Greek island hopping routes.

But is it the only one?

You bet it isn’t!

The main reason why Santorini is the ideal starting point for island hopping to other Greek islands of the Aegean Sea is its close distance from them.

What does this mean?

It is as easy as it can get to travel from one island to another and have the best of both worlds!

All ferries arrive and depart from Athinios, the main port of Santorini . Athinios lies 9 km from the capital of the island, Fira. It is connected by bus and taxi with Fira and the most touristic places on Santorini, such as Perissa, Kamari and Oia.

But, what are the best island hopping routes from Santorini?

You’ll soon find out that island hopping from Santorini to Mykonos isn’t the only option!

Stick with us and you’ll learn everything about it.

Ferry from Santorini to Mykonos – The popular one

Santorini to Mykonos

Step one: Board a ferry from the charming island of Santorini.

Step two: Hop to the most cosmopolitan island of the Cyclades, Mykonos, within just 3 hours with a high-speed ferry. You see, getting from Santorini to Mykonos is pretty easy! What’s more, Mykonos island hopping is a must!

Mykonos is located on the northern side of the Cyclades, in the heart of the Aegean Sea. It is famous worldwide for its wild, never-ending party scene , exciting nightlife, and wonderful scenery. No wonder why it is known as the “Ibiza of Greece”!

But what about Mykonos beaches?

Most beaches around the island are blessed with golden sand and clear waters, offering organized facilities and beach bars. The best of them are located on the southern side of the island. Such beaches are Platis Gialos beach, Paradise beach, Super Paradise beach, and Lia. The soft sand and the crystal clear water of these stunning beaches will amaze you for sure!

When in Mykonos, don’t miss visiting Chora ! This is the main village of the island, with the traditional Cycladic whitewashed houses, the traditional windmills, and quaint narrow streets. What’s more, in Chora, there are plenty of accommodation and entertainment options, amazing bars and nightclubs.

Another must is Little Venice, one of the most romantic places in Mykonos. Just imagine little white and colorful houses, built on the edge of the sea. Amazing, right? And the best part is, in Little Venice, you’ll watch some of the most beautiful sunsets of your entire life!

Tip: Walk through Little Venice, to enjoy a marvelous sunset and a lounge drink.

Ferry from Santorini to Milos -The volcanic one

Sarakiniko beach Milos Greece

Does it sound interesting?

Truth is, the island of Milos has a breathtaking volcanic background .

Just imagine extraordinary rock formations, spectacular natural caves, and secluded coves. Amazing, isn’t it?

But, that’s not all! Milos is one of the most popular islands of the Aegean Sea.

The highlights of Milos are so many!

Milos is renowned for the crystal sea, relaxing ambiance, and the little fishing villages. For example, Klima, with its traditional architecture and boat garages is one of the most beautiful little villages. Plaka and Pollonia are, also, beautiful examples of simplistic Cycladic architecture. Stroll around these little villages and eat fresh fish and seafood at the traditional fish taverns.

As for the beaches , the most popular beach in Milos is hands down, Sarakiniko. Its impressive lunar landscape makes it a must beach to visit, when in Milos.

Island hopping from Santorini to Milos is very popular. This is because both islands are very romantic and quiet. In summer, frequent ferries connect Santorini with the scenic port of Adamas in Milos, making island hopping quite simple.

Ferry from Santorini to Folegandros – The natural one

Santorini to Folegandros island

The best part about island hopping from Santorini to Folegandros?

Its natural beauty !

Exploring the wild natural beauty of Folegandros and its peaceful villages is a unique experience. Despite the island’s proximity to the very popular islands of Paros and Santorini, Folegandros remains untouched by mass tourism. Its villages still manage to retain their traditional character , with their traditional whitewashed white and blue houses. What’s more, at the traditional local taverns of the island, you can taste the yummiest homemade dishes!

Truth is, Folegandros is the ideal destination for relaxation, hiking through wild hills, and swimming in wonderful beaches. Such beaches are Agali and Ambeli.

The bottom line?

Ferry routes to Folegandros from Santorini are daily during high season and the trip lasts for about 2-3 hours.

Tip: Visit the picturesque village of Chora to admire the magnificent view and impressive churches. Also, swim on the gorgeous beaches of Agali and Katergo.

So, what’s so special about Crete?

The unique character of the island, its long history, and its diverse landscapes attract visitors of all ages and types.

In Crete, you’ll see some amazing things. Historical remnants of important historical periods, exotic beaches, deep gorges, verdant mountains, and popular lively resorts.

But, there’s a way to have them all in one.

You should visit Heraklion !

Heraklion is the largest port in Crete and a popular summer destination. It is famous for its busy nightlife and amazing ancient sites. Such sites are the Minoan Palaces of Knossos and Phaestos, Medieval castles, and Byzantine monasteries. Popular tourist resorts in Heraklion include Agia Pelagia, Matala, Malia, and Hersonissos.

And what about getting to Crete from Santorini?

Don’t worry, because, during summer, there are daily ferry connections between Santorini and the port of Heraklion in Crete.

island hopping tours from santorini

Board your overnight flight to Athens today.

Welcome to Greece! Meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner tonight, served with beer or wine.

Nothing can prepare you for the sheer sense of awe you’ll feel when you come face-to-face with Athens—where ancient architecture and artifacts coexist with modern life. Meet up with your dedicated local guide, who will introduce you to the highlights of this bustling capital.

  • Pass by the Panathenaic Stadium, built entirely out of marble—the only such stadium in the world.
  • Continue to Syntagma Square—home to the neoclassical Greek Parliament building—and admire the plaza’s imposing marble steps, fountain, and lush shade trees.
  • Admire the Arch of Hadrian—built to honor the Roman emperor—and imagine how its Pentelic marble stones were carted more than 11 miles from Mount Pentelikon in 131 A.D.
  • View the remains of the sixth-century Temple of Zeus and gaze up at its 16 ornate Corinthian columns.
  • Drive through Plaka. Situated at the foot of the Acropolis, this district is one of the oldest parts of Athens and is known as “the Neighborhood of the Gods” due to the dozens of monuments strewn throughout it.
  • Set off on a walking tour around the ancient Acropolis—site of the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion. You may have seen these enduring icons of antiquity in books and films; now, you’re stepping through the work of craftsmen who quarried and honed these marble blocks thousands of years ago.

Opt into the excursion to Cape Sounion today, where the remains of the Temple of Poseidon—dedicated to the Greek god of the sea—offer a perfect vantage point over panoramic views of the Aegean and its island chains.

Alternatively, you can also use your free afternoon in Athens to explore on your own. Head back to the Plaka district or wander through Anafiotika on the northeast slope of the Acropolis. The latter neighborhood dates to the 19th century and is chock-full of charming, whitewashed cottages and vibrantly hued doors, the likes of which you might have seen—or will see soon—on Greece’s Cyclades islands.

Today, opt into an excursion steeped in mythology—a guided tour of the ancient archaeological site of Delphi. Succumb to the mystical ambiance that has captivated visitors for decades as you discover tales of the Oracle of Delphi, who was believed to deliver prophecies from her seat in the now-ruined Temple of Apollo. From the slopes of Mount Parnassus, you’ll also have unfettered views of olive groves, rugged mountains, and the Gulf of Corinth.

Prefer to continue your Athenian adventure on your own? Use your free day in Athens to stroll through Monastiraki, a historic neighborhood anchored by a famous flea market. Navigate its packed streets and see if you can spot any of its Greco-Roman ruins.

We’re off to the islands! Travel by ferry to Mykonos and join your Tour Director on a walk through Mykonos Town’s labyrinthian streets, bursting with cafes, galleries, and shops.

  • See the iconic white windmills of Mykonos Town—built as early as the 16th century and originally used to mill wheat and barley—and watch their thatched roofs dance in the sea breeze.
  • Delight in Little Venice—perched right alongside the Aegean and inspired by its Italian namesake—where colorful, sun-splashed residences seem to melt into the water, their balconies hanging over the sea.
  • Pass the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, eminently photographed for its Byzantine-era, whitewashed facade and intriguing curves.

Sit down this evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Choose to spend your free day on Mykonos with a hands-on cooking demonstration. You won’t just get to nibble and sip your way through fresh local fare—you’ll also learn how to make Greek staples like tzatziki yourself. What better way to prolong the magic of your trip than by whipping up a tasty memory at home?

Not joining the excursion? Use your free day in Mykonos to hit the cobblestones. If visiting the island’s famous beach clubs isn’t your speed, head back to Little Venice for a stroll along the Old Harbor; hike down to Armenistis Lighthouse, one of the oldest in Greece; or get lost in Matogianni Street’s shops and galleries and surrender to the soft, salty air on The Island of the Winds.

Want to add another Greek island to your list? Add an excursion to legendary Delos for a guided tour of this mostly uninhabited island’s remarkably preserved ruins, sanctuaries, and markets. Peer into its cosmopolitan past and importance as a cultural hub. If history isn’t your thing, Delos’s patch of the Aegean Sea gives you glimpses of scenic coastlines and neighboring islands.

You can also use your free day on Mykonos to hop between the island’s renowned beaches. Relax on golden sands, swim in crystalline waters, or snorkel until you’ve worked up an appetite. Be sure to ask your Tour Director for suggestions on hidden gems and seasonal treats.

Please note: The excursion to Delos will run in the morning only during April and October and may run in the morning or afternoon from May to September.

Delos Cruise & Temple of Apollo

From $125 per person

You’ve seen the photos—now get ready to star in them yourself. Take a ferry to Santorini and enjoy a free afternoon on the island. You can admire the steep cliffs that plunge into the Aegean and the island’s iconic caldera, dotted with whitewashed buildings. Then, eat your way through traditional dishes—like moussaka, a hearty eggplant dish, or tomato fritters—then use your free time to explore unique pebbly beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

Your guided tour of Santorini will take you from dramatic black-sand beaches to jagged cliff-lined shores and back—a stark contrast to the island’s beloved, blue-domed buildings and sprays of bright fuchsia bougainvillea vines.

  • Visit the archaeological excavations at Akrotiri, a settlement buried in volcanic ash, where richly pigmented Bronze Age frescoes and other Minoan artifacts survived a devastating volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C.
  • Ride to the top of Mount Profitis Ilias for panoramic views of Santorini, neighboring island chains, and the blue waters kissing the horizon.
  • Stop in small, picturesque Pyrgos, where you’ll weave through the steep streets of this off-the-beaten-path village.

Choose to hop on a catamaran for a steal-your-breath-away dinner cruise starring the cliffside village of Oia—Santorini’s calling card. You can also spend your free afternoon poking around authentic shops and sampling the local wine if you’re craving time to explore on your own.

Santorini Caldera Cruise & Dinner

From $149 per person

Santorini’s nutrient-rich soil lends itself perfectly to growing wine grapes. Get to know the island’s unique vineyards when you choose to join the excursion to a local winery, complete with a tasting and accompanying lunch.

Prefer to spend the day on your own? You can sample even more traditional plates—like octopus or spanakopita—then explore the unique, black-pebbled shores and clear waters of Kamari Beach. End the day with a sunset stop at the lighthouse found on the southern tip of the island.

Please note: For an additional cost, you can book a visit to the village of Oia through your Tour Director. The visit will either take place on the evening of day 10 or the morning of day 11, depending on the ferry schedule.

Greek Wine Tasting & Lunch

From $89 per person

Take a ferry to Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, this afternoon. The birthplace of the ancient Minoan civilization, Crete served as the backdrop for the mythical tales of King Minos, the labyrinth, and the Minotaur. Remnants of Minoan civilization can be found across the island, punctuating a diverse landscape that ranges from lush valleys and dramatic gorges to looming mountains and serene beaches.

Expect to be embraced by the locals’ friendliness—perhaps alongside a shot of raki, a strong digestif made of distilled grape skins that’s offered as a sign of hospitality.

Looking to uncover centuries of cultural diversity? Choose to join the excursion to Chania, a coastal city on Crete’s northwestern shore that has passed between Greek, Venetian, and Ottoman hands through the years. Embark on a walking tour of Chania’s Old Town, a historic quarter tinged by Venetian heritage that also happens to boast a thriving Jewish community.

You can also use your free day to enjoy Cretan cuisine—grilled seafood and local cheeses like mizithra—at one of the island’s many seaside tavernas or stroll along the warm sands of a beach (or three).

island hopping tours from santorini

Board your bus and cruise past Crete’s olive-covered terrain en route to Heraklion—an ancient port town that was once the hub of the Minoans, Europe’s first civilization. Here, you’ll set off on a guided tour.

  • Visit the ruins of the Bronze Age palace of Knossos. Part administrative center, part place of worship, it held a special place at the heart of Minoan culture (and was where, according to legend, King Minos imprisoned the Minotaur in the heart of a labyrinth).
  • See the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home of the world’s preeminent collection of Minoan art and many artifacts taken from the excavation of Knossos and other dig sites around Crete.

Afterward, fly to Athens and celebrate your trip with your group at a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your stay to continue exploring Athens. With a history spanning more than 3,400 years, we know you’ll want more time to delve into the Greek capital’s ever-evolving cultural landscape. And if you’re just craving another plateful of syrupy, sweet fried dough—those pillowy loukoumades—we’re right there with you.

Athens has no shortage of incredible restaurants serving Greek and international fare, but there’s nothing like a home-cooked meal with friends and soon-to-be friends. Opt into the dinner excursion tonight and break bread with your local host.

You can also spend your first day in Athens scoping out the National Garden, a serene, green expanse in the heart of the city with ponds and shady paths that cross through ancient ruins. For a less crowded panorama of Athens, head to Mount Lycabettus, where you can hike or take the funicular railway to the top of the hill. Be sure to ask your Tour Director for their recommendations, too!

Athens Home-Hosted Dinner

From $79 per person

It’s your last full day in Athens; let’s make the most of it. Join the optional (but highly recommended) visit to the Corinth Canal. This narrow waterway connects the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf and was an important navigational route upon its opening in 1893. While it’s too narrow for modern vessels, its steep limestone walls provide a scenic contrast to the aquamarine waters below. You’ll then continue to the archaeological sites at Epidaurus and Mycenae to walk along some of the best-preserved ancient sites in Greece.

If you choose to spend your free day venturing out on your own, why not take in some of the city’s street art? Wander through neighborhoods like Exarchia or Psiri and check out their colorful graffiti up close. Looking for another vantage point to admire Athens? Head to the Pnyx, a hill where ancient Athenians gathered for assemblies. You’ll get views and a tranquil atmosphere.

Tonight, gather with your fellow travelers to enjoy a farewell drink.

  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.

That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.
