Hurt me once, I let it be; Hurt me twice, you're dead to me; Three times makes you family. Why You No Love Me

Concert Review: John Mayer — It’s Just Another Shot in the Dark

Gainbridge Fieldhouse is the absolute largest concert venue in Indianapolis, and somehow, it felt just as small and intimate as some of the smallest theaters in the city (once you got past the layers of security and hordes of fans). The Pacers’ home court was absolutely full of plush seating arranged in tidy rows and the usage of lighting and effects in general was very minimal. John Mayer is unquestionably one of the most popular and successful singer-songerwriters of this generation and the massive turnout this evening was a testament to his talent and timelessness.

You’re Not Mine Anymore, but I’m Still a Little Bit Yours

The best way to describe JP Saxe is “John Mayer-like”. Full stop. Do not get me wrong, he has his own charm and personality (I mean, have you seen his curls??) But he absolutely has the whole charismatic, handsome, talented, and heartbroken-enough-to-write-deeply-meaningful-lyrics process down to a science. The 30-year-old Canadian native is actually most well-known for his collaboration with ex-girlfriend Julia Michael titled “If the World Was Ending”, which received a Grammy nod in 2021; he played it toward the end of his set and joked that this song “changed his life a tad”. He is a very talented piano player, and has an extremely soulful and powerful voice. There were touches of vocal fry, but it was not constant and seemed to only appear when he was heavily emoting. He received a standing ovation after his set, which he humbly responded to, stating, “Whoa…standing?? That’s new!” Saxe just announced a world tour, with a stop back in Indianapolis next March, at the Deluxe at Old National. I for one will definitely be saving the date.

Two Wrongs Make It Alright Tonight

Tonight was pure magic, with John Mayer onstage just…being John Mayer. His setlist has variedfrom night to night, based on what he is feeling like playing as well as what requests are being held up on posters within his line of sight. The opener tonight was “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”, a performance which was brooding and shadowy. This song in particular was very moody, and Mayer just was so raw and human. I’ve always viewed him as this kind of larger than life Lothario, who also happens to be a majorly talented musician. Mayer is genuinely hilarious, and any prior assumptions or stereotypes I ascribed to him definitely went out the window tonight. His set was broken up into multiple parts, the first of which was his self-described “four song sit-down deep cuts”, which wrapped up with “Queen of California” from 2012’s  Born and Raised.  Interspersed between songs were several interview clips, the first of which was a promo for the  Room for Squares  release in 2001. One of my favorite songs of the night was his cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire”, which had a dreamy, lullaby-like intro. Mayer celebrated his 46 th  birthday the night before, and it came up several times during the show. At one point, he spoke at length about how he is a “birthday crier”, and that what really got him this year was his tour manager, Ken, picking him up a Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake from Carvel’s and sending him a video in which he gave him birthday greetings. Partway through the show, Mayer switched from acoustic guitar to piano. A testament to his insane talent, he did actually play piano with one hand and electric guitar with the other for a brief point during “Changing”. The second interview clip that was shown was from the promo for  Continuum , with 2006 Mayer exclaiming how amazing it would be to one day have a tour that was just “hit after hit after hit” being played (little did he know that this would happen with his career continuing to grow, a decade and a half later).  The second half of his set featured more acoustic guitar, including several songs at the end played on double-neck acoustic. He dedicated “Your Body is a Wonderland” to “All the fellas whose IPAs are never too hoppy…whose steaks are never more than medium rare…the guys that don’t tuck their shirts in”. The encore was made up of two absolute heavy hitters, starting with “Why Georgia”; throughout the whole night there was just so much love and emotion and intensity in the building and it was especially palpable during the chorus. The show then wrapped up with a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin”. Indianapolis was one of the first major cities in the U.S. to give John Mayer air time while he was still an up and coming musician, so having a stop here on his nationwide tour was very apt and he really did seem humbled and appreciative that so many people have supported his music for so long. This was definitely a non-traditional format for a concert, but I greatly enjoyed the artistic freedom he had in terms of playing what he wanted, and catering to the specific audience he was with on a given night. This was not a concert I was expecting to attend, but I am so happy to have had this experience and would absolutely recommend that everyone see John Mayer live if given the chance.

The unpredictability of the setlist — keeps things interesting!

The humor and just general human interaction that Mayer had with the crowd (this man is genuinely so funny)!

The Not-as-Good

I really have no complaints here! I guess if I had to pick something I’d say that JP Saxe should have been given a bit longer set since there was only one opener.

John Mayer Brings His Solo Tour to Indy and It Was Perfectly Lonely

John Mayer bring the Solo tour to Indianapolis | Photo by: ©Pix Meyers 2023

Indianapolis, IN. – John Mayer returned to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis, but this show was a little different than his last few appearances in Naptown.  There was no Dead & Company . There wasn’t a band with backup singers. No bass. No drums. This time, appropriately named the Solo Tour , it was all John Mayer. Well, to clarify, he did bring along Canadian singer JP Saxe to open the evenings event, but other than that, it was just John.

For a band, performing in front of an audience can be a daunting task; nerves & jitters can get to even the best of them. But, Mayer seemed to pull it off with ease. Turning the “Home of the Pacers” into an intimate coffee house setting that included approximately 18,000 customers, John walked out onto a bare stage with only a few guitars & piano. He took a quick glance around the full house, grabbed his acoustic and took a seat. Immediately showing off his guitar skills with the intro to “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”, John kept the audience engaged as he took them on a two-hour journey through his eight studio albums including getting into some deep cuts.

I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how the Solo tour would be. I’ve seen John a handful of times on his previous tours (always with a band), including several shows with Dead & Company. I find him to be a very talented, underrated guitar player. The dude is a monster player. He has made a living playing radio friendly “pop tunes” and is a master at the “side projects” he chooses. He has played with everyone. If you aren’t familiar, I highly recommend checking out the John Mayer Trio or his work with Herbie Hancock &/or John Scofield . I especially enjoy when John breaks into the Blues. But just John…I wasn’t sure what that was going to look like. Would it be enough? Well, the answer is YES.

John breaks his set up into four parts: acoustic, piano, acoustic, and double neck acoustic while throwing in a couple of videos from past interviews he did during the Room for Squares and Continuum eras. He is engaging; often talking to the crowd in between tunes, sometimes giving you the back story behind the song. I did miss his electric guitar though. He picked up an electric for a brief moment for the solo in “ Changing “, but that was all he gave us. I don’t want to give away all the spoilers of the performance but do recommend grabbing the tickets if you were hesitatant because of the “solo status”. After all, when you go to see John Mayer are you there for the band or for John? Here’s your opportunity to answer that question. It’s “Perfectly Lonely” .

Setlist: Indianapolis

Acoustic: Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, Shot in the Dark, All We Do is Say Goodbye, Queen of California, Neon, Who Says, Waitin’ on the Day, I’m on Fire (Bruce Springsteen cover), 3×5, Daughters/Love Is a Verb/Paper Doll, Split Screen Sadness

Piano: New Light, You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me, Changing (picking up electric for solo)

Acoustic: Stop the Train, In Your Atmosphere, Your Body is a Wonderland, In the Blood, Walt Graces’s Submarine Test, January 1967

Double Neck Acoustic: If I Ever Get Around to Living, Edge of Desire

Encore: Why Georgia, Free Falling (Tom Petty cover)

Opening the night was Canadian singer/musician JP Saxe . This was my first time catching JP and I thought he was really good. I look forward to catching his headlining tour “A Grey Area” behind the album of the same name (out now via Arista ) – coming to Indianapolis in March 2024 to The Deluxe inside Old National Centre .

Jim Harbaugh Loves His New Job

The new Chargers coach is "locked, cocked and ready to rock."

  • Author: Stephen Douglas, Special to SI.com

In this story:

The Los Angeles Chargers are undefeated in the Jim Harbaugh era. Sure, they won't play their first game for another five months, but you can't argue with the results so far and Harbaugh is loving every moment. Harbaugh addressed the media on Monday as offseason workouts were starting and told everyone just how well things have been going.

"They've been great. This is just true, it's been the best damn job I've ever had to start out with," he said Tuesday via the team's official transcript. "I hope that it ends that way, but it's been a tremendous start. Hiring coaches, free agency -- that's not just one day, that goes for a while -- getting ready for the draft. Really excited about the coaching staff and the amount of work that has been produced over the last month-and-a-half. It's been a lot, they've done a great job. It's been locked, cocked, ready to rock, just needed the players to come in, and we got that today. It's been really good."

Locked, cocked and ready to rock. Exactly what you want to hear from a new hire. And for him to say that it's the best job ever? He's as enthusiastic as he is committed to khakis. It's the kind of thing that changes a culture. That and memorable quotes like " The back is just an untapped gold mine of lean muscle mass " and " What's good for the bee is good for the hive ." This is exactly what you expect when you hire Jim Harbaugh.

After just one day, new tight end Hayden Hurst is already favorably comparing playing for Harbaugh to playing for his brother John Harbaugh, the coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

"We want to out-physical teams. We want teams to fear us. We want teams to end up giving up in the fourth quarter where we're just hitting our stride."

Just wait until Harbaugh gets these guys in pads and has a chance to speak in front of a full locker room.
