Harry Kessler’s Fin de Siècle Diaries

Count Harry Kessler (1868-1937), whose diaries provide an unusual guided tour of belle époque and early-20th-century artistic and high life in Berlin, Paris and London, was born in Paris to great wealth. A lifetime of extravagant spending and the Depression took their toll. After a long and painful disease, he died impoverished and solitary in Pontanevaux, a village in the Beaujolais region of France.

His father, Adolf von Kessler, was the son of a protestant clergyman who had married into a distinguished Hamburg banking family. Adolf joined the family business, ran the bank’s branch in Paris and became hugely rich. In 1867, he married an Anglo-Irish beauty, Alice Blosse-Lynch, the daughter of a baronet serving the Raj in India. The Kessler couple’s second child, Wilhelmina, was born in 1877. No less a personage than the German kaiser, Wilhelm I, was her godfather, a remarkable proof of his friendship or infatuation with the lovely Alice. Further evidence of the kaiser’s favor came in 1879, when he elevated Adolf to the ranks of the nobility.

Young Count Harry received an international education, first in Paris, then at an English boarding school, a renowned gymnasium in Hamburg and universities in Bonn and Leipzig, where he studied law. Upon graduation, he joined an elegant uhlan regiment of the Imperial Guard, but with his father’s fortune filling his sails, he soon embarked on a career of social butterfly, aesthete, collector, cultural impresario and diplomat. Called back to his regiment at the outbreak of World War I, he initially served in Belgium, where he saw German atrocities firsthand, then in the Carpathian campaign, where he received the Iron Cross, and then again on the Western Front.

Released from duty in mid-1916, perhaps because of a nervous breakdown, he was dispatched to Bern and charged with cultural propaganda. He was to promote Germany’s cultural tradition and attainments to the Swiss public and thus erase the image of his country as a brutal aggressor. He was also given the job of approaching politicians in France who might be willing to make peace on terms satisfactory to Germany. Those included Germany’s retaining possession of Alsace and Lorraine, a position that had Kessler’s full-throated endorsement. His efforts yielded nothing. Indeed, his diaries leave one with the unpleasant impression that the superannuated officer and would-be diplomat was, despite his wealth and social connections, a fifth wheel — and one that squeaked as he bombarded friends and acquaintances in high places with advice on the conduct of war and foreign policy.

Apart from his diaries, Kessler’s lasting achievements are the exquisite books published by Cranach Press, which he founded in 1913 and supported financially as long as he was able. The editions of Virgil’s “Eclogues,” illustrated by Aristide Maillol, and of “Hamlet,” translated into German by Gerhart Hauptmann and illustrated by Edward Gordon Craig, are especially fine examples. His more ambitious projects, which included the construction of a monument and a stadium in memory of Nietzsche and the attempt to become the cultural czar of Weimar, ended in disappointment.

journey to the abyss

Assessment of the value of the diaries presents difficult problems, not the least of which is their extraordinary bulk. Kessler was a compulsive diarist: the first entry was written on June 16, 1880, when he was 12, and the last on Sept. 30, 1937. He died two months later, on Nov. 30. According to Laird M. Easton, the editor and translator, the 877 pages of diaries included in “Journey to the Abyss” make up only about one-quarter of the diaries for the period 1880-1918. The material from these decades was believed to have been lost until 1983, when a safe on Mallorca that held it was opened upon the expiration of a 50-year lease. This partial publication is its first in English. Diaries for the period November 1918 to November 1937 had already been published in English in London in 1971; they were republished in the United States under the title “Berlin in Lights” in 2000.

The most rewarding passages in the present volume are those written while Kessler was on his trip around the world in 1892, especially his descriptions of 1890s New York. He observed street life as sharply as he did balls organized by Ward McAllister and the Astors. His account of an extended and intelligently planned stay in Japan is even more remarkable. It records with great sensitivity and occasional flashes of humor his impressions of villages, ryokans , hot baths, the emperor and the empress passing through the Hama Gardens in Tokyo and an entertainment offered by a great court noble upon coming to maturity.

A reader avid for gossip about the great figures in fin-de-siècle and early-20th-century art, literature, politics and high society in Germany, France and England will have a feast. Rilke, Shaw, Richard Strauss, Maillol, Rodin, Munch, Diaghilev, Nijinsky, Duse, to drop just a few names, pullulate in the diaries — he knew them all, was their frequent guest and entertained the crème de la crème with a passionate assiduity.

But this volume of the diaries is marred by Kessler’s conceit and strange lack of self-awareness (for example, he regularly took others to task for being parvenus, Hugo von Hofmannsthal among them, without reflecting that he owed his own position to his father’s recently acquired title and millions); his appalling political judgments (among them his enthusiastic backing of the Tirpitz project to expand the German High Seas Fleet, which was a major contributing cause of World War I); a nasty streak of anti-Semitism that runs through them (the remark that Galicia’s economy “had maintained itself, despite the Jews, who sit in every village as numerous as lice” is but one picturesque instance); and his hero worship of Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and Hindenburg’s duumvir in the waning days of the Second Reich, General Erich Ludendorff.

Men change, occasionally for the better. In March 1918 we find Kessler saying, apropos those who fear German world domination, that “if they saw the asses who sit in Berlin and guide the world empire . . . they would be less anxious.” A shrewder and more humane count is revealed in “Berlin in Lights.” For a brief month and a half in 1918 he held the post of German envoy to Poland, and acted decisively and to good effect. Back in Berlin after Poland had broken off diplomatic relations with Germany, he visited the imperial palace, recently sacked by mutineering soldiers and sailors, and, as he contemplated the remains of the kaiser’s and the empress’s objets d’art and mementos, all of them insipid, tasteless and philistine — emblematic of false values — he realized that “I feel no sympathy, only aversion and complicity when I reflect that this world was not done away with long ago, but on the contrary still continues to exist.”

He left Germany, never to return, in early March 1933. The boycott of Jewish businesses and professionals began on April 1. Kessler marked the event, writing: The “abominable Jewish boycott has begun. This criminal piece of lunacy has destroyed everything that during the past 14 years had been achieved to restore faith in, and respect for, Germany.” He had come a long way.

Publisher Description

These fascinating, never-before-published early diaries of Count Harry Kessler—patron, museum director, publisher, cultural critic, soldier, secret agent, and diplomat—present a sweeping panorama of the arts and politics of Belle Époque Europe, a glittering world poised to be changed irrevocably by the Great War. Kessler’s immersion in the new art and literature of Paris, London, and Berlin unfolds in the first part of the diaries. This refined world gives way to vivid descriptions of the horrific fighting on the Eastern and Western fronts of World War I, the intriguing private discussions among the German political and military elite about the progress of the war, as well as Kessler’s account of his role as a diplomat with a secret mission in Switzerland.   Profoundly modern and often prescient, Kessler was an erudite cultural impresario and catalyst who as a cofounder of the avant-garde journal Pan met and contributed articles about many of the leading artists and writers of the day. In 1903 he became director of the Grand Ducal Museum of Arts and Crafts in Weimar, determined to make it a center of aesthetic modernism together with his friend the architect Henry van de Velde, whose school of design would eventually become the Bauhaus. When a public scandal forced his resignation in 1906, Kessler turned to other projects, including collaborating with the Austrian writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal and the German composer Richard Strauss on the opera Der Rosenkavalier and the ballet The Legend of Joseph , which was performed in 1914 by the Ballets Russes in London and Paris. In 1913 he founded the Cranach-Presse in Weimar, one of the most important private presses of the twentieth century.   The diaries present brilliant, sharply etched, and often richly comical descriptions of his encounters, conversations, and creative collaborations with some of the most celebrated people of his time: Otto von Bismarck, Paul von Hindenburg, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Diaghilev, Vaslav Nijinsky, Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, Sarah Bernhardt, Friedrich Nietzsche, Rainer Marie Rilke, Paul Verlaine, Gordon Craig, George Bernard Shaw, Harley Granville-Barker, Max Klinger, Arnold Böcklin, Max Beckmann, Aristide Maillol, Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, Éduard Vuillard, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Ida Rubinstein, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Pierre Bonnard, and Walther Rathenau, among others.   Remarkably insightful, poignant, and cinematic in their scope, Kessler’s diaries are an invaluable record of one of the most volatile and seminal moments in modern Western history.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY JUL 25, 2011

Harry Kessler (1868 1937) was among the most connected people in the German Empire and indeed in pre-war Europe. A diplomat, writer, philosopher, and patron of the arts with a great breadth of knowledge, Kessler socialized with everyone from Nietzsche to Einstein and the Aga Khan. He kept meticulous diaries spanning over 50 years, documenting Germany at its intellectual, political, and artistic peak, and its descent into the maelstrom of WWI and beyond. This volume comprises half the diaries (believed lost and recently discovered in a lockbox in Mallorca). Easton, Kessler's biographer, has capably translated and culled the voluminous work to give a glimpse into the ferment of aristocratic Europe. That said, Kessler's style is oddly impersonal and often dry. He enjoys passing judgment (English working-class girls were "the most repulsive, vilest creatures that one can imagine as still human ) but rarely mentions his personal life or emotions, even as his friends die in WWI. Easton makes much of Kessler's homosexuality, but the diaries give little hint of intimate relationships with men or women. An enlightening view of European high society, notable for its erudition and density of anecdote, for readers strongly interested in European history and culture. 59 photos.

JOURNEY TO THE ABYSS

The diaries of count harry kessler, 1880-1918.

edited by Laird M. Easton translated by Laird M. Easton ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 15, 2011

Take a grand tour through the Belle Époque without leaving your chair.

Count Harry Kessler’s diaries from 1880 to 1918 bring to life the many highly influential artists, royals and politicians who affected the 20th century in myriad ways. A German born in Paris and educated in England and Germany, he was fluent in all three languages by the time he was 18. Kessler knew and dined with all the major players of that period, including writers, sculptors, artists and the royalty of Germany. In this impressive translation and editing job (which includes copious footnotes), Easton (History/California State Univ., Chico, The Red Count: The Life and Times of Harry Kessler , 2002) depicts a voracious reader who, despite claiming that his interests were completely absorbed by art, still managed to capably discuss philosophy, politics, the classics and even the lovely little bits of court gossip. Kessler often mentions his very low impression of the Grand Duke who wished to control all the arts in Germany. In 1890, after viewing an exhibition of the Artistes Indépendents, he describes the “orgies of hideousness and nerve-shaking combinations of colors I thought impossible outside a madhouse.” Only two years later, Kessler became one of Ambroise Vollard’s best customers, and he couldn’t get enough of Cezanne, Monet, Degas and Renoir. Kessler also published travelogues. Reading his personal journals of his trips—particularly America, Greece and Fiesole, Italy, which he blissfully describes—will convince readers that they must journey there, book in hand, and see these wondrous sights. Kessler’s insightful views of the aesthetic freedom that art provides and of the need to reread books to gauge how much the reader has changed are just samples of his astute outlook. He illuminates the innocent world he inhabited in the years before the horrors of World War I destroy the last vestiges of intelligent “civilization.” A hefty tome that may prove daunting for some readers, but this is a classic book for the ages to keep and reread.

NIGHT

by Elie Wiesel & translated by Marion Wiesel ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 16, 2006

The author's youthfulness helps to assure the inevitable comparison with the Anne Frank diary although over and above the...

Elie Wiesel spent his early years in a small Transylvanian town as one of four children.

He was the only one of the family to survive what Francois Maurois, in his introduction, calls the "human holocaust" of the persecution of the Jews, which began with the restrictions, the singularization of the yellow star, the enclosure within the ghetto, and went on to the mass deportations to the ovens of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. There are unforgettable and horrifying scenes here in this spare and sombre memoir of this experience of the hanging of a child, of his first farewell with his father who leaves him an inheritance of a knife and a spoon, and of his last goodbye at Buchenwald his father's corpse is already cold let alone the long months of survival under unconscionable conditions.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS

From mean streets to wall street.

by Chris Gardner with Quincy Troupe ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 1, 2006

Well-told and admonitory.

Young-rags-to-mature-riches memoir by broker and motivational speaker Gardner.

Born and raised in the Milwaukee ghetto, the author pulled himself up from considerable disadvantage. He was fatherless, and his adored mother wasn’t always around; once, as a child, he spied her at a family funeral accompanied by a prison guard. When beautiful, evanescent Moms was there, Chris also had to deal with Freddie “I ain’t your goddamn daddy!” Triplett, one of the meanest stepfathers in recent literature. Chris did “the dozens” with the homies, boosted a bit and in the course of youthful adventure was raped. His heroes were Miles Davis, James Brown and Muhammad Ali. Meanwhile, at the behest of Moms, he developed a fondness for reading. He joined the Navy and became a medic (preparing badass Marines for proctology), and a proficient lab technician. Moving up in San Francisco, married and then divorced, he sold medical supplies. He was recruited as a trainee at Dean Witter just around the time he became a homeless single father. All his belongings in a shopping cart, Gardner sometimes slept with his young son at the office (apparently undiscovered by the night cleaning crew). The two also frequently bedded down in a public restroom. After Gardner’s talents were finally appreciated by the firm of Bear Stearns, his American Dream became real. He got the cool duds, hot car and fine ladies so coveted from afar back in the day. He even had a meeting with Nelson Mandela. Through it all, he remained a prideful parent. His own no-daddy blues are gone now.

On his journey, he crosses paths with a gigantic, bi-pedal ram named Selma. At first, their encounter seems trivial, but unbeknownst to them, destiny is pulling strings behind cosmic curtains.

The bargain is simple, kill the devilish king that exiled Selma, and she will help him get to the afterlife. The only problem is that the Myer Ram King is the most powerful beast that walks the earth — and using magic is not an option.

What started as a grieving boy on a mission to restore his mother's soul quickly becomes a perilous adventure that grows more impossible with each obstacle.

A life for a life is a cruel bargain, and he may not live to see it through.

How to get Xenophage in Destiny 2: The Journey Quest

by Ryan Schilling | Apr 24, 2024

The Journey is an exotic quest that begins near Sorrow’s Harbor on the Moon. From the transmat point, head towards the central Hive fortress in the area. Inside the main entrance, look for a hallway to your left and follow it until you reach the area called the Enduring Abyss. Continue down the path and keep an eye out for a ledge on the right side of the hallway. Jump up here to find yourself in a place you may find familiar from the Shadowkeep campaign. This is the balcony overlooking the first pyramid ship that we discovered.

Around this balcony, you will notice four Hive statues. You need to activate these statues in the correct order to begin your quest. The order is as follows:

  • The right statue nearest the pyramid ship
  • The left statue furthest from the pyramid ship
  • The left statue nearest the pyramid ship
  • The right statue furthest from the pyramid ship

How to get Xenophage 1 Screen Destiny 2

Hive Statues, Xenophage Quest

Once you activate the statues in the correct order, a chest will appear containing the beginning of your quest for the exotic heavy machine gun Xenophage.

Xenophage Exotic Quest Requirements

The Xenophage exotic quest does have one pre-requisite – you must own Destiny 2’s expansion Shadowkeep which grants access to The Journey exotic quest.

How To Unlock Xenophage, Step-By-Step

Step 1: emerge from the darkness.

After you have successfully begun your quest, fast-travel to the Sanctuary transmat location on The Moon, mount your Sparrow, and immediately head down the right path toward Anchor of Light. Once you reach Anchor of Light, head left toward the Fallen outpost built on the cliffside.

Inside this outpost, you will find a mount of what appears to be Hive growth. Interact with this mount to pick up the Light and you will receive the buff Torch Bearer which will begin a countdown timer. Your objective now is to seek out braziers located in the area and light them. The first one can be found in the very same room where you picked up the ball of Light.

How to get Xenophage 3 Screen Destiny 2

How to get Xenophage, Destiny 2

From the first brazier, head north and take the path toward the center of the Anchor of Light area. Before you reach the triangle-shaped Fallen outpost draped in purple tarps, turn left to find an alcove that drops into a pit. On the ledge near this pit is your second brazier to light.

From the second brazier, head back towards the initial outpost, but look for a small building quickly to your left. Inside this room, you will find your third brazier to continue lighting your path.

The next brazier is tucked away in the upper levels and criss-crossing bars of the initial outpost. Head back to that outpost, jump your way up to the fourth brazier, and light it.

Next, follow the cliffside of the initial outpost until you notice a short ramp half-buried in the sand to the top of a cubic structure. At the top of the ramp will be your fifth brazier.

The sixth brazier is fairly simple to find. Jump onto the top of the central circular building in Anchor of Light and it can be found right in the middle of the roof. Lighting this sixth brazier should grant you the new buff Torch Bearer.

With the Torch Bearer buff in hand, head back towards the initial outpost where your path began, but before you reach it, look for a small Hive pylon with an opening on it. Here is where you will deposit your ball of light and “emerge from the dark”. Congratulations on completing the first step of your quest towards obtaining Xenophage!

How to get Xenophage 4 Screen Destiny 2

Step 2: Find the Fragments

The next step in your quest will have you navigating to four Lost Sectors around The Moon. After you complete each Lost Sector, you will find a set of Hive runes laid out in 3 rows and 3 columns that will be the key to securing these fragments. You need to shoot these runes in a particular order. Wait for the flame animation over the runes to complete after each shot to ensure your selection is locked in. Once you correctly shoot the sequence of runes, a chest will spawn containing the required Path Fragments for completing this quest step.

In the K1 Communion Lost Sector , you will need to complete the Lost Sector and shoot the runes found here in the following order:

  • Bottom Left
  • Bottom Right

In K1 Crew Quarters , your sequence of runes is a bit longer. Complete the Lost Sector and shoot the runes in the following order:

  • Middle Left
  • Middle Middle
  • Bottom Middle

In K1 Revelation , the order for shooting the Hive runes is as follows:

  • Middle Right

If you are following this guide in order, only K1 Logistics remains. The sequence is as follows:

Step 3: The Pit of Heresy

The next quest step will require you to jump into the Pit of Heresy Dungeon . Progress through the dungeon as normal until you reach the infamous crevasse with many doors on the other side. With Fireteam Finder, you should find a fireteam to help you complete the initial parts of the dungeon while more skilled players are likely to be able to navigate to this part of the dungeon solo.

Jump to the ledge just to the upper left of the doorway directly across the abyss. You will need to jump straight up to the next ledge directly above you. Continue repeating this to scale the wall. Once you get some good height and reach the next level of doors, begin heading further left hugging the wall. There will be an open door with some rubble inside. Near the rubble will be one Hive rune you can interact with to “Reveal Path’s End.”

How to get Xenophage 5 Screen Destiny 2

Step 4: The Pit of Heresy Continued

After securing the next step of the quest from the room of many doors, continue through the dungeon as normal until you reach the encounter where you must hide and avoid the Hive Ogres. Head towards the cliffside and drop down to the lower level found there. Near the cliff’s edge on this lowest level, you will find a plate covered in Hive runes. Interact with this plate to reveal the path forward.

Platforms will rise out of the abyss below. Carefully begin platforming across them to pick up the Light ball from the furthest platform. Once you have the ball of Light, head back towards where you entered the Ogre encounter. From the point where you entered the encounter, turn right and look for the second door on the right and deposit your ball of light there.

This door will open the path to a secret boss, Volmar, The Tempted, who is the obstacle between you and your precious Xenophage. To defeat this boss you will need to leverage various damage types. Ensure you or your fireteam have weapons or subclasses that generate Solar, Arc, Void, and Kinetic damage.

Before you enter the boss room, you’ll encounter a group of Thrall. Dispatch them and then take a look around the room. You’ll see Hive runes and below them, an elemental type. You’ll also notice you have a buff such as “Fiery Dread”, “Thunderous Dread”, “Neutral Dread”, or “Abyssal Dread”. The core mechanic in this encounter is to pay attention to the buff that you have in the bottom left and dunk the Light ball at the rune that corresponds with the buff that you have active. Memorize the runes and elements in the room before the boss and you should be golden. Upon depositing the Light ball, you will receive a damage buff and you should quickly switch to your weapon of the same element and begin dealing damage to the boss.

Defeating Volmar, The Tempted will grant you the final step in your quest for Xenophage. Whether you complete the rest of the dungeon is up to you as the final step only requires us to return to Eris Morn via the Sanctuary transmat location and pick up your glorious new Exotic Heavy Machine Gun!

Divine Fragmentation Reward

Congratulations on securing one of the best damage-dealing weapons in Destiny 2! This Exotic Machine Gun not only deals great boss damage but also provides unique utility in encounters such as the Oracles in The Vault of Glass.

That is all you need to know to complete the Xenophage exotic quest, The Journey. We hope this guide helped you in growing your exotic collection. For more Destiny 2 guides like this one, keep that Xenophage locked to Blueberries.gg! We cover the Hunters’ Remembrance quest and Starcrossed quest here.

James Cameron speaks during the Hand and Footprint Cement Ceremony At TCL Chinese Theatre on January ... [+] 12, 2023 in Hollywood.

Nine films, three Oscar wins, over $8 billion at the worldwide box office and a pop culture footprint the size of Toruk Makto . That’s right, people — we’re talking about the one and only James Cameron, visionary maestro behind some of the most iconic (and highest-grossing) movies ever made: The Terminator , Aliens , Titanic , Avatar . If the term “auteur” ever felt applicable, now would be the time to use it. A little snobby, sure, but Cameron’s impact on the entertainment industry cannot be understated.

The dude is a living legend and the mythology around him just keeps on growing. His love of grand storytelling, mixed with a fascination of technological progress (both speculative and within the context of modern moviemaking tools) and the myopia of the military-industrial complex as they relate to things humanity doesn’t fully understand has allowed the filmmaker to deliver winning hit after winning hit.

Born on August 16, 1954 in Kapuskasing, Ontario, the celebrated writer/director discovered a love for storytelling amidst the significant cultural shifts of the 1960s.

“Reaching his teenage years ... a heady period that encompassed the excitement of the space race, the tensions of the Cold War, and the progressive spirit of the civil rights movement, Cameron was drawn to the science fiction of the time and its exploration of these prescient themes,” reads Tech Noir: The Art of James Cameron .

While he never formally attended film school, Cameron (whose family moved to California in 1971) had long since proven himself a talent visual from decades of personal illustration. After working odd jobs as a mechanic, truck driver and school janitor, the aspiring director landed a production designer gig at Roger Corman’s low-budget powerhouse, New World Pictures, gradually honing his Hollywood skills until it was time to make his feature-length debut.

James Cameron movies represent the pinnacle of the visual storytelling art-form, and his legendary eye for design, action and world-building remains unmatched. Cameron won’t do something unless he is 100% certain he can deliver a cinematic experience like no other, as evidenced by his impressive lineup of films going back to 1982.

  • Piranha II: The Spawning (1982)
  • The Terminator (1984)
  • Aliens (1986)
  • The Abyss (1989)
  • Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)
  • True Lies (1994)
  • Titanic (1997)
  • Avatar (2009)
  • Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

It almost feels sacrilegious to try and rank James Cameron’s celebrated filmography, because the director has never made an objectively bad movie. Just think about it for a second: every one of his blockbuster projects is thrilling, innovative, fun, iconic or some alchemical combination of all four. That said, here are my rankings.

9. Piranha II: The Spawning (1982)

I don’t think Cameron would begrudge anyone ranking his sequel to Joe Dante’s cult favorite and exploitative Jaws ripoff in last place. After all, Cameron only worked on the film for two-and-a-half weeks before he was fired. “In actual fact, I did some directing on the film, but I don't feel it was my first movie,” he admitted in 1991 . “So I don't think I should have to take the lumps. I used it as a credit when it did me some good, which was to get Terminator . Subsequently, I dropped it.”

Piranha II: The Spawning is available to rent or purchase on Prime Video .

8. True Lies (1994)

Again, none of Cameron’s movies are bad, per se. It’s just that some are better than others. True Lies is an absolute blast from start to finish, with the director blending his impeccable action chops with a solid comedic premise. Arnold Schwarzenegger headlines the blockbuster as Harry Tasker, a secret agent who accidentally drags his wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) into a nuclear terrorist plot while trying to spice up her humdrum life with espionage excitement. Like most Cameron efforts, the movie yielded an oft-emulated rubric for later efforts like J.J. Abrams’ Mission: Impossible III (2006) and Simon Cellan Jones’ The Family Plan (2023).

True Lies is currently streaming on Hulu .

7. Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

While it certainly delivers a breathtaking visual feast and makes a great case for reviving the RealD 3D craze sparked by its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water is just too new to rank any higher on this list — even if it is the third highest-grossing movie of all time . Its influence and context within the greater Avatar saga has yet to crystallize, especially with three other sequels on the way. Taking place 16 years after the first installment, The Way of Water finds Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and their family fleeing to the Pandora coast as the Resources Development Administration returns to the planet with a vengeance.

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently streaming on Disney+ .

6. The Abyss (1989)

One of those movies that will make you swear to never take breathing for granted ever again, The Abyss never lets up on the anaerobic claustrophobia one finds at the bottom of the ocean. Not exactly a movie for those of you who don’t enjoy tight spaces. The story starts off as a Jules Verne-style adventure 20,000+ leagues under the sea with a group of deep-sea oil riggers brought into a Navy-sponsored rescue operation regarding a damaged nuclear submarine. As the narrative progresses, however, The Abyss slowly shifts into a touching love story peppered with a dash of extra-terrestrial wonder worthy of Steven Spielberg . And, of course, one can’t deny this was the beginning of Cameron’s fascination with the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean — something that would eventually lead him to Titanic and a record-breaking dive to the Mariana Trench in the Deapsea Challenger submersible.

The Abyss is currently streaming on Hulu.

5. Titanic (1997)

The highest grossing movie of all time (until Avatar came along), Titanic remains Cameron’s sole stab at historical drama. Of course, there is plenty of fiction in there, too — mainly the romance between Jack Dawson (Leonard DiCaprio) and Rose Dewitt Bukater (Kate Winslet). Still, a three-and-a-half hour movie about a boat wouldn’t have been all that interesting. Cameron needed the relatable human tragedy of star-crossed lovers serving as the emotional counterweight to a larger-than-life disaster that continues to haunt our collective consciousness .

Titanic is currently streaming on Paramount+ .

4. Avatar (2009)

There’s a very good reason it took almost a decade for James Cameron to release another movie after Titanic : he was patiently waiting for technology to advance to the point where he could finally get this passion project off the ground. That lengthy hiatus paid off big-time once Avatar became (and stayed) the highest-grossing film of all time. More than that, our first adventure on Pandora marked a staggering watershed moment for visual effects and resulted in a brief, yet intense, resurgence of the whole 3D fad. Despite its familiar story and themes, Avatar was an event unto itself, a bold pronouncement shouted from the rooftops: “THE KING IS BACK!!!”

Avatar is currently streaming on Disney+ .

3. The Terminator (1984)

Much like David Fincher, James Cameron would prefer you count his second directorial credit as the true start of his filmmaking career. Fine by us. Cameron’s heart-pounding action flick about an unstoppable killing machine (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent back in time to kill the mother of humanity’s only hope at rising up against a tyrannical technological regime was an instant classic. Lines like “Come with me if you want to live!” and “I’ll be back” were immediately branded into the hide of pop culture. The Terminator deserves every shred of its perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes .

The Terminator is currently streaming on Prime Video & AMC+ .

2. Aliens (1986)

More than half a century after her ordeal aboard the Nostromo, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) returns to LV-426 with a platoon of cocky Colonial Marines, who have no idea what they’re up against. If there was anyone who could figure out a way to make a sequel to Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi/horror classic , it was James Cameron. To date, he remains the only filmmaker to craft a worthwhile follow-up to the original. Rather than try and recapture the magic of Alien , which turns 45 this year, Cameron opted for a much grander story, injecting the budding Xenomorph saga with a healthy dose of testosterone-laden action thrills.

Aliens is currently streaming on Max .

1. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

It’s damn-near impossible to improve on perfection, but that’s exactly what Cameron did with T2 , which brilliantly flips audience expectations by reframing Schwarzenegger’s terrifying T-800 as a benign protector for young John Connor (Edward Furlong). The big bad this time around is the new and improved T-1000 (Robert Patrick), a robotic assassin comprised of liquid metal. A deepening of the themes, characters and mythology introduced in the 1984 original, Terminator 2: Judgement Day remains the gold standard for blockbuster sequels everywhere.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day is currently streaming on AMC+ .

At least three more Avatar films are currently on the way, with the trio of titles expected to hit theaters on December 19, 2025; December 21, 2029; and December 19, 2031 respectively.

Avatar 3-5 (and possibly beyond)

Plot details are kept under tight lock and key, but we do know Oona Chaplin ( Game of Thrones ), Michelle Yeoh ( Everything Everywhere All at Once ), and David Thewlis ( Harry Potter ) are all set to play brand-new characters in the third chapter, which will introduce audiences to the antagonistic Na’vi tribe known as the Ash People.

Moreover, producer Jon Landau has confirmed “a big time jump” for Avatar 4 as well as a trip to Earth in Avatar 5 . “In movie five there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth,” he teased during a 2022 interview with Gizmodo . “Earth is not just represented by the RDA [the evil organization in the film; the abbreviation stands for Resources Development Administration]. Just like you’re defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good. And that’s the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that.”

Should audiences want more Avatar action, Cameron does have ideas for sixth and seventh installments, though he most likely wouldn’t direct them. “Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required,” he told The Hollywood Reporter . “I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this.”

Bottom Line

Whether he’s sinking the Titanic, traveling back in time to save humanity, or soaring through the air on the back of a Great Leonopteryx, James Cameron never disappoints. Not something you can say about every living director.

“Hasta la vista, baby!”

Anti-Penix Reaction on Draft Night Was Over the Top

Critics blasted Atlanta for taking the UW quarterback at No. 8.

  • Author: Dan Raley

In this story:

When Michael Penix Jr. heard his name called out on Thursday night in the NFL Draft -- as the No. 8 pick for the Atlanta Falcons -- he quickly got to his feet with a big smile on his face and began hugging family members back in Florida, where he chose to watch his pro football career unfold.

It was a crowning moment for a University of Washington quarterback who had bounced back from the abyss of four season-ending injuries at Indiana to just missing out on winning the Heisman Trophy and coming up a victory short of claiming a CFP national championship and a perfect season for the Huskies.

A top 10 draft pick for him was a next step forward in his alternately tragic and glorious football journey, from a human being left crumpled across the Midwest landscape to one standing so upright as the Falcons seemingly gave him validation he was someone special.

Except at that very instance, not everyone was sold on this particular draft development. Keyboards everywhere began clicking furiously and spitting out vitriol over Atlanta's decision to choose Penix to guide the franchise at some point.

Consternation was everywhere, with no one more put off by the draft pick than Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski. Consider his no-holds-barred take on this pressing pro football matter.

Taking Penix at No. 8 is awful resource allocation. It's also downright atrocious value. The Bleacher Report Scouting Department didn't even have Penix graded as a first-round prospect. This is a failure on every single level. Grade: F

The thing is Sobleski was not alone in casing aspersions over the Penix pick. No other media outlet gave it a grade higher than a C-. People called it the surprise of the first night, if not the biggest mistake made.

Granted, they readily could have criticized the former Husky quarterback for his garish choice in sunglasses -- sort of a cartoonish, white-framed model -- yet to continue to belittle his football skills just seems odd.

Yes, Penix is a little unconventional as this loose-limbed lefty throwing from all kinds of oddball angles, delivering off his back foot and acting a little jumpy at times.

Yet what some people don't realize is he's an acquired quarterback taste, someone to be seen up close and appreciated over time, especially in the closing moments with the game on the line.

Early in Penix's UW stay, a Husky fan on social media absolutely ridiculed the quarterback's arm strength basically while watching from the edge of his couch. An invitation was extended for him to come to practice and see the QB's velocity up close, to have one of those blistering pass attempts whiz past his head and maybe change his mind.

Penix has a most deceptive fastball, sort of like Dennis Quaid's pitcher portrayal in the film "The Rookie." People have to keep checking their Jugs guns.

The analysts probably will tell you they have nothing personal against Penix, just the Falcons for drafting him so high after signing veteran Kirk Cousins to a $100 million guaranteed deal, which seems like gross mismanagement to them, and for screwing up all their mock drafts.

What they can't comprehend is how Penix might turn out to be a very productive NFL quarterback, someone who either replaces an aging Cousins or an injured Cousins, sooner than later, depending on what comes first.

The Falcons were blasted for stockpiling quarterbacks. Yet the Atlanta front office might say you can never have too many great players at any one position, especially behind center, if the opportunity arises to stack them.

Penix, as fellow Husky first-rounders Rome Odunze and Troy Fautanu will tell you, is a masterful leader in the huddle, someone with an unappreciated arm, a guy who will leave it all out on the field until something in his knee or shoulder is badly broken.

And if Penix does succeed in the NFL, not one of his critics on draft night will cop to their knee-jerk analyses, to all of those failing grades, to all of that misplaced outrage.

How to set up monitor in bedroom - Crafting a Tranquil Oasis

I n the modern whirlwind of existence, the bedroom morphs beyond a mere sleeping quarter into an oasis, a refuge from the clamor of the outside world. We embark on a journey, guided by the allure of technology, ushering monitors into this sacred space, weaving them into our bedtime rituals, work routines, or leisure pursuits. Yet, the orchestration of a monitor within the bedroom tapestry demands a nuanced approach, one that harmonizes with the ambiance rather than discordantly disrupts it. Herein lies a compendium, a roadmap to navigate the labyrinth of setting up a monitor in your bedroom, transmuting it into a haven of tranquility and functionality.

1. Ponderous Selection of Locale: The inaugural step in the grand orchestration entails the judicious selection of a locale. Seek a vantage point where the monitor exerts its presence without usurping the room's essence or encroaching upon your slumber. A stout desk or a gallant wall mount, facing the bed with an imperious gaze, beckons. Let the monitor perch at eye level, a gesture to placate the strain upon the neck and eyes, a nod to ergonomic elegance.

2. Deliberate Positioning: Shun the temptation to place the monitor in direct opposition to the bed, casting shadows of light upon your nocturnal visage. Such dalliances disturb the delicate dance of sleep, besmirching its quality. Instead, adopt an oblique stance, where the luminance of the screen surrenders gracefully, or veil the intrusion with the opulence of curtains or blinds.

3. Evoke a Serene Aura*: Enshroud your monitor in the gentle embrace of a serene aura, suffusing the surroundings with a tapestry of tranquility. Infuse the milieu with hues of soft luminescence, embracing the caress of soothing tones and embracing the tender embrace of comfortable seating. Let verdant fronds and evocative artistry weave a narrative of nature's embrace.

4. Cable Management Symphony: A symphony of cable management ensues, a quest to tame the unruly tangle of wires and cords, orchestrating them into a harmonious tableau of order and obscurity. Harness the unruly cords with the finesse of cable clips, ties, or veils, adorning the walls or desk legs with their invisible presence.

5. Harmonize Display Settings: With the monitor ensconced, the alchemy of display settings unfolds, a dalliance to optimize visual comfort. Tweak the luminosity, the contrast, and the chromatic spectrum, an endeavor to assuage ocular fatigue, especially during protracted viewing sessions. Engage the esoteric guardians of blue light filters and nocturnal modes, warding off the specter of sleep's disturbance.

6. Ponder Screen Proportions: Gaze into the abyss of screen proportions, contemplating the delicate balance between immersion and intrusion. Traverse the labyrinth of screen sizes, selecting a canvas that complements the room's dimensions, bestowing a vista that embraces without overwhelming.

7. Establish Ethereal Boundaries: Should the monitor beckon for labor or leisure, erect ethereal boundaries to safeguard the sanctity of slumber. Erect temporal bulwarks against its encroachment, delineating hours for repose and hours for engagement. Embrace the digital detox, an elixir for the mind, a preamble to the somnolent symphony.

8. Embrace Ergonomic Elegance: In the pursuit of ergonomic elegance, equip yourself with accouterments to support posture and repel discomfort. An adjustable monitor stand, an ergonomic keyboard, and a mouse of ergonomic grace, deployed with meticulous precision to shield wrists, necks, and lumbar from the ravages of strain.

9. Purge the Chaos: Engage in the ritual of purgation, purging the sanctuary of clutter and chaos. Dust the screen and surfaces with tender care, wrangle the errant cords into submission, and expel the superfluous from the sacred precincts. Bestow upon the sanctuary an aura of serenity and organization.

10. Infuse Personal Essence: Finally, infuse the monitor's abode with the essence of self, a tapestry woven with threads of individuality and authenticity. Adorn the space with cherished mementos, framed memories, tokens of inspiration, crafting a tableau that whispers of your soul's yearnings.

Special Tips - While downloading Apk apps on computer monitor, download good quality apps and be careful not to get any virus while downloading.Good quality laptop should be brought from Dubai and good quality country if budget is good. Viruses do not attack good quality laptops.

By heeding these esoteric admonitions, you embark upon a voyage of transformation, transforming the mundane monitor into a totem of serenity and functionality within the hallowed confines of your bedroom sanctuary. Let comfort, aesthetics, and mindfulness be your guiding stars as you navigate the labyrinthine path toward a haven where solace and rejuvenation intertwine in harmonious repose.
