Testimonials
“I really enjoyed the trip so much! I thought the excursions were wonderful. The Gohagan staff and the boat crew did a fabulous job. I really enjoyed meeting so many different people and especially MSU bulldogs. It was so much fun to meet a former bulldog bully too!!
Tour name: Cruising the Great Lakes
“Trip could not have been any better! We enjoyed getting to know the other Bulldog couple on the trip as well. Just a tremendous tour altogether.”
Richard Hopper (former MSU faculty member) and Donna Hopper (’95)
Tour Name: Oberammergau and the Danube River
“This vacation was deferred for two years because of the pandemic but it was worth the wait. Everything was beautifully organized, and the guides were terrific. We will definitely travel again with the MSU alumni association, Traveling Bulldogs.”
Drew Demboski (’87) and Cecelia Demboski
Tour Name: Great Journey Through Europe
“It was a trip of a lifetime and it felt like you were in a National Geographic Special. One of the most rewarding experiences was visiting the Kibaoni Primary School, the first public primary school in Tanzania with a library, and bringing school supplies and books from the US. The school administration loved the MSU filled bags!”
James Morris (’82) and Melanie Morris
Tour Name: Tanzania Safari during the Great Migration
“This trip was definitely a Home Run... From Fenway Park to the beautiful fall colors, it was educational and historical with beautiful landscapes and of course amazing lighthouses. And we always enjoy the fellowship with our Traveling Bulldogs!”
Sharon Fanning-Otis and Larry Otis (’21)
Tour Name: Landscapes and Lighthouses of Coastal Maine
"Traveling to Southeast Asia with the Traveling Bulldogs gave us the opportunity to see a part of the world that many people never see. Our tour guide, Victor, made sure that our itinerary provided us with experiences that would be memorable. He also recommended the best shopping places and restaurants to visit during our free time. Our accommodations were superb, and new friendships were made."
Steve (’70, ’72) and Linda Murray Philadelphia, MS
C’est magnifique! The Great Journey thru Europe alumni trip was simply - just great. Between staying in spectacular hotels in Zermatt and Lucerne plus the other half of the trip cruising the Rhine on the riverboat with many beautiful cathedrals and castles, it was a good mix of seeing Switzerland and Germany on foot, train/rail, and the on-shore excursions from the riverboat. We enjoyed visiting with the other State alumni plus the extra bonus of meeting members from other college alumni groups, whether in a guided tour group or on the riverboat during meal times. It was inspiring and informative to learn about the history and architecture of the various countries and locales plus being able to talk to some of the local guides about the customs and differences, compared to America. We won’t soon forget this trip and all the cool things and people we encountered."
Greg ('86) and Sandy Hays ('87) Bellingham, WA
"We expected to discover new things on our trip but the greatest thing was finding one of my college professors on the trip. It has been over 40 years since our last meeting. After 40 plus years, we both had to travel over 1,500 miles to meet again. It was a wonderful surprise to find that we were sharing our tour with my former professor."
Mark ('75) and Jana Demeranville Farmington, MN
"We thoroughly enjoyed our recently completed Traveling Bulldogs trip, the Southwest National Parks, a nine day trip covering over 1,900 miles by motor coach. This was our third Orbridge sponsored trip in addition to those done previously (Canadian Rockies-Rocky Mountain Express to Vancouver and the Wolves of Yellowstone) and like those the tour guides proved to be extremely knowledgeable, competent and professional. We could never have pulled off a trip of this nature hitting this many sites on our own in a stress free manner. Highly recommend keeping this trip in your future offerings."
Lynn and Myra Reinschmiedt Starkville, MS
"We loved our River Seine to the Beaches of Normandy tour with the National WWII Museum and all the places of history that we got to visit. We visited the American Cemetery at Normandy where we laid a wreath at the wall of a Mississippi soldier whose body was never found."
William and Elaine Read Quitman, MS
"We have had excellent experiences with all our Mississippi State alumni trips. We have been on a half dozen of these trips. We meet wonderful people. The itineraries are carefully thought through and well balanced. The trips represent great travel for the cost. We always look forward to the brochures to see where we can go next."
Jim & Laura White (Both of ‘83) Orange Beach, AL
"It was great fun going to Iceland with the Traveling Bulldogs. The accommodations were first class. We got to see many interesting places and things that we had wanted to see. We spent several hours photographing puffins! And, we really enjoyed meeting people from other universities."
Steve Brandon (’72) and Patsy Fowlkes (’74) Chattanooga, TN
"We believe Orbridge put together the best wine and culinary tour possible in the Chianti region and would highly recommend to more Traveling MS State Bulldogs and other collegiate alumni groups!!"
John (’66) and Marion Dean Leland, MS
"My wife and I had a fantastic time with the Traveling Bulldogs on our National Parks and Lodges of the Old West trip last year. We not only saw the beautiful scenery of the area, but we met some great folks which the majority were fellow Bulldog Alums. Five of those State couples are traveling with us to Vancouver and riding the Canadian Rocky RR across southern Canada this year. Not only were the food, scenery, and buses beautiful, comfortable, and enjoyable, the fellowship of having fellow Bulldogs, and other friendly folks, along for the ride made for a trip we will cherish for a long time. I highly recommend any State Alum, or fan who enjoys traveling to join this fun group and have a trip you will certainly remember for the rest of your lives."
John and Mary Eileen Passons Madison, MS
"45th Anniversary trip of a lifetime! Small crowds, small ship and exceptional service!"
John (’74) and Nancy Meador Starkville, MS
"My wife Belinda and I went on a trip out west last year with the Traveling Bulldogs and it was the best trip we have ever been on. Everything was planned and all the details were planned. The best part was making new lifelong friends. We were so pleased that we have scheduled another trip this year to the Canadian Rockies by train."
Dick (’74) and Belinda Spann (’75) Columbus, MS

Mississippi State architecture students receive travel awards for international research
Contact: Christie McNeal
STARKVILLE, Miss.—A junior architecture student at Mississippi State will get a chance to broaden her global perspective with help from a $20,000 Aydelott Travel Award.
Yuria J. Sloane of Charleston, South Carolina, plans to travel this summer to Bolivia, Japan, New Zealand and Norway to research the use of architecture as a tool of oppression and liberation for indigenous communities. Her itinerary includes studies of architect Freddy Mamani's El Cholets in El Alto, Bolivia; the Okinawa Prefectural Museum by Ishimoto Architectural and Engineering Firm in Naha, Okinawa; architecture firm Tennent Brown’s Te Wharehou o Waikaremoana in Te Urewera, New Zealand; and architects Christian Sunby’s and Stein Halvorsen’s Sameting in Karasjok, Norway.
“Receiving this award has been eye opening to the possibilities of architectural work outside of traditional practice,” Sloane said. “I have never had an opportunity presented that allowed me to research something so personally important to me. It has inspired me to possibly follow a research-focused path during my schooling and beyond.”
Assistant Professor Silvina Lopez Barrera will advise Sloane in her research.
“Being of an indigenous group myself, I have found myself drawn to buildings with deep cultural motivations,” Sloane said. “When we think about modern examples of indigenous architecture, we cannot ignore the social elements that surround them and their ability to have a platform in the architecture industry. I settled on my topic because I think it is important to look at how architecture was used to harm and can now be used to repair.”
The $2.4 million endowment—established by late Memphis architect Alfred Lewis Aydelott and his wife Hope Galloway Aydelott—provides an award each year to four architecture students currently enrolled in the professional architecture degree programs at Mississippi State, as well as the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; Auburn University; and the University of Tennessee.
Additionally, rising senior architecture major Anna Rives Gully of Starkville is receiving a $4,750 Trussell Travel Award sponsored by MSU School of Architecture alumnus Ted T. Porter to support her research on Daniel Libeskind’s Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany. She will be specifically looking into how the building addresses and fits into the societal context of Berlin, defined by World War II and the Holocaust. Gully will further her contextual understanding of World War II in Europe through additional travels to Austria and Prague.
“The Aydelott and Trussell Travel Awards provide amazing opportunities for our students to experience architecture throughout the world,” said School of Architecture Director and F.L. Crane Professor Karen Cordes Spence. “We are extremely fortunate to have this support for students and are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Aydelott and Mr. Porter for making this possible.”
MSU’s School of Architecture offers the state’s only professional architecture degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Learn more at www.caad.msstate.edu . Fostering Lifelong Support
On June 17, 1885, members of the first three graduating classes of Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College met in the Philotechnic Literary Society Hall at the College to discuss ways and means of "perpetuating the memories of college life that would bind the classes of different years and at the same time strengthen the good influence the College might exert through her graduates." After several informal discussions, a motion was made to establish an Alumni Association. Without a dissenting vote this motion was carried and by acclamation a committee was appointed to "retire and frame a report on offices and officers." Another motion was made to establish a committee to draft a constitution and by-laws, which were adopted a year later.
Since its beginning, the university and the MSU Alumni Association have seen many changes. However, what remains the same is the spirit and loyalty of our graduates and friends. Now known as Mississippi State University, there are nearly 150,000 living alumni who share the same love and devotion as the inaugural group of graduates who established our association. With 101 active chapters and clubs around our state, nation and world, our MSU alumni stand strong and are truly "maroon and white forever."

Recent Passing of Emeritus Van Haitsma
Author: Office of Alumni Engagement
Published Date: 5/10/2024
Categories: Alumni Faculty and Staff
Dr. Glenn Van Haitsma
September 3, 1927 - May 2, 2024
Professor Emeritus of English, 1958-1993
Born and raised on a Vriesland, Michigan dairy farm, Glenn was the eldest of 4 children born to Martha and Clarence Van Haitsma. He graduated co-salutatorian of Zeeland High School in 1945, continued his studies at Hope College, then earned a Ph.D. in English literature from Syracuse University. Mid-graduate studies, Glenn was drafted into the US Army, and later placed in a State Department refugee program in Germany. In 1958, Glenn accepted a position in the English Department at Carroll where he would remain for his teaching career. Glenn became a highly respected member of the faculty, serving as the first Faculty President, pioneering a core curriculum of interdisciplinary studies, and launching the popular NCEP (New Cultural Experience Program) inter-term courses that have been formative for many Carroll students. Glenn and his wife, Ruth, were active in their Waukesha community. Founding members in 1962 of the Waukesha Council on Human Relations (now the Equal Opportunity Commission), they organized a city-wide fair housing campaign and helped establish groups that continue to serve Waukesha today, including La Casa de Esperanza, Hebron House and Plowshare. In his teaching, Glenn introduced the first Black, Chicano, Native American and Third World Literature courses at Carroll, and he led students in immersive cross-cultural learning experiences to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, Rust College in Mississippi, and the Ecumenical Institute in Chicago. Glenn was active in several regional academic groups that fostered incorporating ethnic studies and social justice into teaching, and he and Ruth were involved in the Society for Values in Higher Education for many years. Glenn’s conscientious teaching style meant many late-night hours preparing for class and reading hand-written student papers. He team-taught several Wilderness Studies courses that included canoeing in the Boundary Waters, and he portaged canoes as handily as students a third his age. Glenn particularly loved mountain-climbing, and at age 71, he was the eldest of an inter-generational group of Carroll students and faculty who trekked the mountains of Nepal. You can find Glenn's entire obituary here.

SEC announces opponents and locations for 2024-25 Men’s Basketball schedule
Texas will host Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas A&M in Moody Center during its first season in the league.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference announced each school's conference opponents in addition to home and away designations for games on its 2024-25 Men's Basketball schedule, the first season in which The University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma will participate in SEC competition.
For Texas, home contests in the third year of Moody Center will feature Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas A&M. The Longhorns will make road trips to face Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. Dates, times and television information will be revealed at a later date.
Conference play tips off on Saturday, January 4 and runs through Saturday, March 8. Each SEC team plays the other 15 teams at least once during league play. Three teams will be played a second time during the schedule, two of which are permanent opponents and one that will change each year.
The continuation and renewal of historic rivalries was a point of emphasis when creating the schedule as the SEC welcomes Oklahoma and Texas as new members in 2024-25. Additionally, preexisting home-and-away rotations for single-play opponents were preserved.
The SEC Tournament will be played at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., on March 12-16, 2025.
