Amateur Kris Kim, 16, making TOUR debut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Change Text Size

16-year-old English amateur Kris Kim hopes to replicate that success, this time on the PGA TOUR.

Kim, who beat Russell 5&4 in a singles match at the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup, is making his PGA TOUR debut this week at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. Kim, a CJ Group ambassador, received a sponsor exemption into the event.

“I found out about a month ago. Yeah, it was a crazy phone call,” Kim said, smiling. “I was over the moon for the rest of the day.”

Kim displayed a remarkable maturity, similar to Russell, as he spoke to the media Wednesday at TPC Craig Ranch. Kim was composed and succinct, answering questions about his background, earliest golfing memories and possible nerves in making his pro debut. There was no wide-eyed reaction to the scene, despite it being the biggest week of his young golfing life.

Kris Kim on playing in his first PGA TOUR tournament

That wisdom can be credited largely to his mother Ji-Hyun Suh, one of the Korean pioneers who competed on the LPGA in the 1990s. Suh is Kim’s swing coach and introduced him to the game at the age of 5.

“(I) always used to watch her, and then ended up falling in love with it myself,” Kim said. Kim’s whole family, including Suh, will be the ones watching this week.

Kim’s life outside golf looks similar to most 16-year-olds. A native of Surrey, England, Kim has a few exams next week that he’s trying not to think about. He golfs mostly on the weekends, prioritizing school from Monday to Friday. On the golf course, he’s anything but a typical teenager.

In 2023, Kim won the Boys’ Amateur Championship, the European Boys’ Individual Championship and the McGregor Trophy. He is the first amateur golfer to be sponsored by CJ Group, which sponsors numerous pro golfers, including Sungjae Im, Si Woo Kim, KH Lee and Byeong Hun An. Kim is the first European amateur to sign an NIL contract with Under Armour and the first British amateur to sign an NIL deal with TaylorMade. He went undefeated in the Junior Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, claiming 3.5 points as Europe won the event for the first time since 2006.

That experience in Rome has made Kim confident in handling the nerves this week.

“That was really good for me because that was probably the first time I ever played in front of a crowd,” Kim said. “Yeah, got a taste for it for the first time.”

His aspirations extend far beyond gaining experience, though that will be a valuable component of the week. Kim isn’t counting himself out of contention.

“My first aim is to make the cut and then see what happens. At the end of the day, I’m one of 144 competitors and we’ve all got a chance,” he said.

Kim tees off at 9:02 a.m. local time alongside Max Greyserman and Norman Xiong.

High-level golf runs in the family for 16-year-old Kris Kim, who will make his PGA Tour debut this week at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. Kim’s mother, Ji-Hyun Suh, played on the LPGA in 1998 and 1999, at the same time superstar Se Ri Pak burst onto the global stage.

Kim, who hails from Surrey, England, brings quite the resume to Texas. His 2023 triumphs include the R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship, European Boys Individual Championship and the McGregor Trophy.

He also went undefeated at the Junior Ryder Cup, defeating another up-and-coming star, Miles Russell, 5 and 4, in singles. The 15-year-old Russell, of course, tied for 20th recently on the Korn Ferry Tour .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by England Golf (@england.golf)

“I can’t wait to play in front of big crowds again. I’ve never hit the ball as far as I did at the Ryder Cup,” Kim said in a release. “The adrenaline rush makes golf so much fun. That said, having played that course, and a few more Tour courses, I appreciate the task ahead and look forward to the challenge.”

Kim, who is playing in McKinney on a sponsor exemption, became the first amateur sponsored by CJ Group last May. Managed by Trinifold Sports, Kim also became the first European amateur to sign an NIL deal with Under Armour and the first British amateur to sign with TaylorMade.

Suh, who briefly returned to competition in Europe in 2014 after a 12-year break, told tour officials that she took up golf at age 13 in Seoul after her father forced her to quit tennis.

“My father would take me at five in the morning and I would hit balls all day and my hands would hurt,” she said. “I didn’t like it very much, but my father did. So I continued practicing from the age of 13 and I became very good. Then, I joined the Korean National team, turned professional in 1998 and afterwards I decided to try and play in America.”

Suh recorded two T-15 finishes in 1998 on the LPGA at the Friendly’s Classic and Giant Eagle LPGA Classic.

Her stint in America fell short, she said, because her English wasn’t very good and it was difficult to travel on her own. With no sponsors in the U.S., she ultimately left for the Japan LPGA, where she played for one year until she met her husband and stopped altogether.

That was in 2002. The couple moved to Surrey and Suh took up a teaching career at a local golf course.

While Suh’s path into the game was laid out by her father, Cuddington Golf Club director Paul Schunter told BBC Sport that Kim’s passionate pursuit is self-motivated.

“I’ve never known a more dedicated youngster,” said Schunter, who watched Kim’s game develop as a youngster at Cuddington.

“And he could not have asked for better parents. They have been so encouraging. All the pushing has come from Kris because he has always wanted to play and practice more and more.”

Kim doesn’t have to look far to learn more about how to handle the next step of his career.

“I’ll definitely ask my mum for advice,” he said. “It is going to be a very different environment and you don’t know how you will respond to it. She’ll help me deal with it. She’s my coach and we talk about everything from dealing with nerves, taking one shot at a time, leaving bad shots behind and keeping it simple right through to course strategy.

“My first aim is to make the cut and then see what happens. At the end of the day I’m one of 144 competitors and we’ve all got a chance. Whatever happens, it’s going to be super helpful for my future because I’ll gain so much experience. I know I’m still young and pretty much every week I learn a lesson, but this week is going to be a lot bigger.”

England's Kim, 16, youngest to make PGA Tour cut in 11 years

Kris Kim , a 16-year-old English amateur playing on a sponsor exemption at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, became the youngest player in 11 years to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.

Kim finished his second round Friday with a birdie for a 4-under 67. At 7-under 135, he was among 66 players who made the cut, which was 6 under. Jake Knapp was the leader at 14-under 128.

Guan Tianlang was 14 when he made the cut at both the Masters and Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

At 16 years, 7 months old, Kim is the fifth-youngest player ever to make a PGA Tour cut, according to the Tour. His feat also comes just two weeks after Miles Russell, 15, became the youngest to make the cut in the 35-year history of the Korn Ferry Tour.

Kim, who is the son of former LPGA Tour player and South Korea native Ji-Hyun Suh, is making his PGA Tour debut. He is the first amateur sponsored by South Korean company CJ Group, which is the title sponsor of the Nelson for the first time.

"I'm happy," Kim said. "I can't wait to get started again tomorrow. I've enjoyed it so much the last couple days, and being here two more days makes it so much sweeter."

A first-time Tour winner earlier this year, Knapp enters the weekend with sole possession of the lead after a second consecutive 7-under 64 in McKinney, Texas. He was a stroke ahead of Troy Merritt (62) and first-round leader Matt Wallace (66) and 2 ahead of Kelly Kraft (66).

"Even when I was doing any of that stuff, I always knew this was what I wanted to do and felt like it's where I should be. Just wasn't there yet," said Knapp, just more than two years removed from working security at a restaurant in his hometown that was also a late-night hotspot. "Just kept working away and sticking at it."

Merritt closed his season-low round with an eagle at the 531-yard ninth hole, where he hit his approach to 16 feet and made the putt. He had birdied four of the previous six holes.

Wallace finished on the same par 5 later in the day and saved par after driving into a native area and then chunking a shot from there to under a bridge.

Hometown favorite Jordan Spieth , the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 20, shot a 70 to finish at 4-under 138 and miss the cut by 2 strokes. On the 16th, his wayward drive ricocheted off the elbow of a male spectator back into the fairway. Spieth still bogeyed the hole then parred his last two.

Defending champion Jason Day closed his round with a 35-foot par putt for a 70 and was just on the cut line at 6-under 136.

Knapp's only bogey through the first two rounds was on his 12th hole Friday, the dogleg No. 3, where his drive went into the left rough. But he birdied four of his last six holes, that stretch starting with a 32-foot putt at the par-3, 192-yard fourth hole.

"Obviously, a putt you're not trying to make," he said. "Hit it a little bit harder than I would've liked and luckily it was on a good line and went in."

Knapp, who turns 30 on May 31, lost his card on the developmental Korn Ferry Tour before taking the part-time job in the fall of 2021 at the place in Costa Mesa, California, where for nearly nine months he worked Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights -- often until 2 or 3 a.m. The former UCLA player would practice and go to the gym in between his work shifts.

He got his third win on PGA Tour Canada in August 2022 and last year earned his PGA Tour card by finishing the season 13th on the Korn Ferry Tour. He won the Mexico Open in his fifth start this season, and his ninth overall, including two as an amateur in 2015.

His PGA Tour biography also touts that he can solve a Rubik's Cube, loves to work out and would pursue a career in the fitness industry if he weren't playing golf.

"Yeah, few interesting ones about me," Knapp said. "I do my best to, I'm kind of a golf-only guy. Just play a lot of golf and practice a lot. That's been my focus for the last four, five years."

At TPC Craig Ranch north of Dallas, Knapp hit 16 of 18 greens each of the first two rounds. He had the same number of putts (28) both days, though the combined distance of those shots on the greens went from 75 feet on Thursday to 139 feet on Friday.

"For the most part hitting it pretty solid and keeping in the right areas. Made it relatively easy on myself." Knapp said. "Early on in the year felt like I was putting well, and for the last month or so the stroke felt the same and ball wasn't going in the hole. ... Nice to see a few more going in."

Merritt opened his round with consecutive birdies before a three-putt bogey at No. 12, though he got that stroke right back with a 52-foot chip-in at No. 13. He made only his second cut in his past six tournaments, finishing 67th in the other one.

"It's fantastic, especially when you hit the ball solid and making a lot putts," said Merritt, who is in his 331st PGA Tour event and last won in 2018. "You're not accidentally there. You've actually played well to get there. I haven't done that. I've accidently backdoored a couple top-10s last fall."

Peter Oosterhuis, British golfer who blazed path in America, dies at 75

Mr. Oosterhuis was among the first Europeans to play full-time on the PGA Tour and later became a longtime commentator on CBS.

Peter Oosterhuis, a British golfer with a 6-foot-5 frame and an elegant compact swing, who became one of the first Europeans to compete full-time on the PGA Tour in the 1970s, and who later found a second career as a longtime golf commentator on CBS, died May 2 at age 75.

PGA officials announced the death in a statement but gave no further details. Mr. Oosterhuis, who lived in Charlotte, retired from broadcasting in 2014 because of early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

For nearly two decades, Mr. Oosterhuis (which he pronounced OH-ster-house) was one of golf’s most distinctive players on both sides of the Atlantic. He blasted towering fairway drives, swinging extra-long clubs to accommodate his height. With his short game — folding himself over his wedges and putters — he showed a finesse and deft touch that often left spectators roaring.

In his lone PGA Tour victory , at the Canadian Open in 1981, he chipped a perfect shot from the sand on the final hole and then knocked in a one-foot putt, giving him a single-stroke win over three runners-up including Jack Nicklaus , who had designed the course.

“You’ve been very patient, Peter, and now you’ve won one,” Nicklaus told him.

“I don’t know if I’ve been patient or just stubborn,” replied Mr. Oosterhuis, who was widely known as “Oosty.”

Just his presence on the PGA Tour was something of a novelty. His decision in 1975 to compete fully on the PGA circuit made him one of the first Europeans on the tour, and helped show the possibilities to other international players at a time when the PGA carried the biggest prize money and prestige.

“I came over to the States and I think maybe I was just happy that I was on the PGA Tour,” he told Golf magazine. “At that time, it was an achievement.”

Even before his PGA years, Mr. Oosterhuis had made a mark on the sport. He was among the dominant golfers on the newly formed European Tour, winning back-to-back Open de France titles in 1973 and 1974, a year he also won the Italian Open. At Britain’s Open Championship in 1974, he was runner-up, four strokes behind South Africa’s Gary Player.

His most-watched moment during that run came in the United States. At the 1973 Masters, Mr. Oosterhuis stunned the field and fans. After 54 holes, he had a three-stroke lead at Augusta National Golf Club with shots that included a dazzling 60-foot putt for an eagle.

“Nervous?” someone asked Mr. Oosterhuis as he headed for the fourth and final round.

“Yes,” he replied.

The previous night, he forgot to tell the hotel to block his calls. A friend in Britain phoned at 3:45 a.m. to wish him luck. He said he couldn’t fall back asleep for an hour.

From the first hole, the lead Mr. Oosterhuis had built was chipped away. Nicklaus and American Tommy Aaron were surging. By the 10th tee, Mr. Oosterhuis had surrendered the lead to Aaron and J.C. Snead, the nephew of golfing great Sam Snead . Still, Mr. Oosterhuis was just a stroke back. A steady push to the finish could keep him in contention.

On the 520-yard 15th, Mr. Oosterhuis misplayed the drive, forcing him to take an extra shot to reach the green. Then his putting, normally a reliable part of his game, failed him. He missed a 10-footer for a bogey, his fourth of the round. He could not recover.

Aaron finished at a four-under 283 for his first and only Masters victory. Snead was second at 284; Mr. Oosterhuis was third at 285 along with Nicklaus and Jim Jamieson.

“I played a scrappy round,” Mr. Oosterhuis recounted , “but didn’t play particularly well.”

Mr. Oosterhuis retired from professional play in 1986 and turned his golf knowledge — along with his self-effacing wit — into a broadcast career. He worked for Britain’s Sky Sports and the Golf Channel before debuting for CBS Sports in 1998. For the next 16 years, he was part of the network’s golf coverage team.

At the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Mr. Oosterhuis and his colleagues noticed that his memory and usually prodigious attention to detail appeared to be slipping. “When an [obsessive-compulsive disorder] person can’t obsess the way he used to,” he recalled, “he starts to obsess about his inability to obsess.” He later received a diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s disease, and announced he was stepping down.

In a 2015 interview, he was asked if he had moments of anger over his inability to continue broadcasting. He joked that he never gets angry. Then he added a caveat. “Maybe once,” he said, “when I missed a few short putts.”

‘Thinking globally’

Peter Arthur Oosterhuis was born May 3, 1948, in London. His father, who had fled the Netherlands during World War II, was a commodities broker for coffee and other products. His mother was a homemaker who was a low-handicap golfer.

As a boy, he was permitted on the grounds of a golf club , Dulwich and Sydenham Hill, to pick blackberries. “I used to eat all the blackberries I picked,” he said , “so I was soon dismissed from that and I started to play golf instead.” Within a few years, he was winning junior tournaments.

He represented Britain in amateur international play in 1967 and 1968 before turning professional. He finished sixth at Britain’s 1970 Open Championship, where Nicklaus defeated fellow American Doug Sanders in a playoff. (In 1982, Mr. Oosterhuis narrowly missed again at the Open, finishing a stroke behind Tom Watson .)

From 1971 to 1974, Mr. Oosterhuis held the No. 1 ranking in Europe. As part of Ryder Cup competition — U.S. teams vs. Europeans — his one-on-one record during the 1970s included twice beating Arnold Palmer .

Mr. Oosterhuis said his move to the PGA Tour was inspired by countryman Tony Jacklin, who had been taking part in American competitions since the late 1960s. “After Tony I was really the only guy in Europe thinking globally,” he once said. “I made the effort to go over, and I proved to myself that I could compete.”

After leaving the professional circuit, Mr. Oosterhuis was golf director at country clubs in New Jersey and outside Los Angeles before returning to Britain for the broadcast job with Sky. He also contributed golf commentary for the BBC.

In his golf bag, he always kept a copy of National Geographic’s “Complete Birds of the World” to help identify new species that he spotted while playing. He tallied about 500 over his career.

His marriage to Anne Coney ended in divorce. In 1993, he married Ruth Ann Pittluck. Besides his wife, survivors include two sons from his first marriage; two stepsons; and four grandchildren.

During a 1973 Ryder Cup match in Scotland, America’s Lee Trevino announced that he would kiss his teammates in the rear if he lost to Mr. Oosterhuis. They tied. Even so, the American team waited for Trevino in the locker room with their pants lowered as a joke.

“I didn’t know about that until years later,” Mr. Oosterhuis recalled. “I guess I should take it as a compliment that I must have played well enough to get Lee Trevino’s attention.”
