Titleist’s New Bags for 2023: More Organization, Accessibility, and Style Than Ever

mm

Titleist is launching new Players Series bags for 2023, and they feature more opportunities for organization and accessibility while offering more style than ever.

The new Players StaDry, Players 4, and Players 5 bags feature an improved construction for more space for gear and other necessities during your round, and they’re more accessible and easier to carry thanks to a lightweight design.

Titleist’s new bags are enhanced from past models, and each of the three new carry bags are optimized for what every golfer needs, whether you’re a rider or a walker out on the course.

The various divider options are also suitable for any personal preference. Some prefer as few dividers as possible, but others want additional dividers to separate clubs even more. The two options available between these three bags are either four or five, which seem to be more popular than the more separative 13 or 14 dividers that some companies offer.

Players 4 StaDry

The Players 4 StaDry features everything a golfer could want, including premium waterproof construction, plentiful storage, and a weight that comes in at just under 4 pounds, one of the lightest on the market.

FIRST LOOK: 2023 Titleist TSR Driver Series – TSR2, TSR3, TSR4

Titleist 2023 TSR Series Drivers: TSR4, TSR3, TSR2

After much anticipation and early success on the PGA Tour, the new Titleist TSR drivers are officially here, and we have all the details to help you get the inside scoop at what’s under the hood.

As a quick synopsis, the TSR drivers build on the continued success that the TSi and TS series before had with golfers of all skill levels. For the engineering team at Titleist, the message from the top down was clear: “Don’t mess up a great thing!”

When I say “from the top down,” I’m not talking about the board of directors, I’m talking about golfers. Titleist knows the TS series has a reputation to maintain as the number one driver brand on the PGA Tour and they have no intention of giving that up anytime soon.

Titleist TSR2

g430

The TSR2 has been re-engineered from the inside out to deliver more ball speed, stability and a look that fits more in line with the rest of the TSR series.

If there ever was one tweak from players, it was that the TSi2 was “a little angular” around the toe, but the new TSR2 has adopted a more natural pear shape, like its TSR3 brother, which checks boxes for looks and also helps with aerodynamics.

titleist tsr2 driver

Aerodynamics? Yes! The biggest external upgrade to the TSR2 is a mini-diffuser to smooth out airflow and allow the driver to be swung up to 0.5 mph faster at 100 mph swing speed — that might not seem like much, but when you’re pushing up against the USGA limits, it’s a nice bonus. The diffuser is designed to work the same way as a diffuser on a Formula 1 car, by stabilizing airflow behind the head and allowing it to move faster.

F1 Car diffuser

In the back of the club, the adjustable sure-fit weight has been moved from the sole to the rear skirt so even with the slightly smaller front-to-back shape, the driver’s MOI still has been increased over the previous model.

Another improvement to the TSR2 is something you can’t see: a newly designed variable thickness face structure. This new face design expands the COR area away from the middle of the face and helps the driver transfer more energy, leading to more ball speed on mishits.

LOFTS: 8°, 9°, 10°, 11° in right and left-handed (8° LH available through custom order only)

ATI materials

Before going any further, we need to touch on the face material, because it is unique to Titleist drivers: ATI-425 titanium.

ATI-425 is manufactured in the United States by Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI), in Pittsburgh, and offers distinct advantages to conventional titanium used in golf. This proprietary material offers 30 percent higher ductility, along with higher yield and tensile strength, which is a complicated way of saying it allows engineers to push manufacturing to higher tolerances for face thickness.

With two more years of refinement and testing since the launch of the TSi, engineers have again saved more weight from the face to be positioned around the head to create stability without ever sacrificing durability.

Titleist TSR3

TSR3 Sole

With the TSi3 being Titleist’s most popular model with professionals, it was challenging to make the club better, but it’s also easy to see why the uptick with players was immediate once the TSR3 was released.

The TSR3 follows a similar path of the improvements to the TSR2, thanks to a newly designed face insert and a subtly reshaped skirt and sole for better aerodynamics.

titleist tsr3 driver

The biggest challenge for Titleist was to increase MOI without increasing the dimensions of the head. To accomplish this, the rear weight of the sure fit track has been adjusted to move it more to the perimeter — same shape, higher MOI, more stability, more consistent ball speeds means improvements in every category.

LOFTS: 8°, 9°, 10°, 11° in right and left-handed (8°, 10°, 11° LH available through custom order only)

Titleist TSR4

Titleist TSR4

This is where things get really interesting, because the TSR4 is a true specialty club in the fitting space designed to offer reduced spin for players that have swing dynamics that make it harder to create ideal launch conditions. The TSR4 also offers a smaller head profile. At 430cc, it’s one of few sub-460cc drivers on the market.

Although targeted to a small segment, Titleist and outside fitters found there were golfers who really liked the smaller profile of the TSi4 but needed MORE spin, so the engineers designed a best-of-both-worlds option for the new TSR4. The interchangeable forward and rear weights allow the driver to offer the lowest spin head in the forward position, and when reversed the TSR4 becomes a smaller and slightly more workable version of the TSR3: still low spin but not too low that mishits become unmanageable.

titleist tsr4 driver

Paired with an updated face design, and rear skirt for improved aerodynamics like the other new drivers in the line, the TSR4 is a great option for players who want to get everything they can out of a smaller-headed driver.

LOFTS: 8°, 9°, 10° in right and left-handed (8° & 10° LH available through custom order only)

Shaft offerings

Titleist doesn’t do “stock” shafts — they offer featured shafts, meaning each and every shaft is available in the aftermarket. Nothing here is watered down or “made for.”

The featured shafts for the TSR cover a variety of launch, spin and feel options, and the Premium Featured shafts from Graphite Design continues their strong partnership with the Japanese shaft manufacturer.

Justin Thomas left no stone unturned in his Masters preparations. Still seeking his first green jacket, Thomas' bag underwent much experimentation before his ninth appearance at Augusta National. It will result in a new-look setup for Thomas at the year’s first major.

The testing began at the Valspar Championship, where Thomas and Titleist Tour rep J.J. Van Wezenbeeck evaluated the irons that Thomas has used since the 2023 U.S. Open.

Ahead of the Valspar, Thomas began testing a T100 5-iron , too.

According to Van Wezenbeeck, Thomas liked what he saw, with the club providing added height and forgiveness, especially on shots hit low on the face.

The only problem was distance gapping. Thomas was hitting his 5-iron 4-5 yards further, leaving the gap between his 5-iron and 4-iron too tight.

That led Thomas and Van Wezenbeeck to test an even more forgiving Titleist T200 4-iron model, which produced even more forgiveness across the face with its hollow-bodied design and a higher launch and peak height. Now, Thomas has a longer 5-iron and an even longer 4-iron in the bag. Problem solved.

With that change to his iron set, Thomas has a newfound combination: Titleist 621.JT mid-to-short irons (6-9), a T100 5-iron and a T200 4-iron.

Although Thomas currently ranks sixth on the PGA TOUR in Strokes Gained: Approach, he is just 134th on approaches more than 200 yards. Perhaps the boost in forgiveness and added height will be the difference maker.

Thomas’ equipment changes at the Masters do not end there, though.

After working with Scotty Cameron rep Drew Page throughout 2024 on putter testing, Thomas is switching into a new 2024 Phantom X 5.5 putter , which first launched in Hawaii

According to Page, Thomas liked the look of the new Phantom X model, but he preferred a slightly different sound off the face. After a few months of back and forth, making minor manipulations to the putter head, Thomas is set to give the new putter a go on Thursday, replacing his previous X5 Tour model with a similar dual-winged shape.

On Sunday at the Valspar, Thomas switched into a prototype Titleist TSR 2-wood , the same club Cameron Young was spotted testing at THE PLAYERS Championship. According to Van Wezenbeeck, Thomas wanted to try out the prototype in live competition before considering putting it into play at the Masters.

Although Thomas liked the performance of the 2-wood, he will likely stick with his trusty TS 3-wood come competition time on Thursday. That said, the possibility of a mid-event switch is in play. As recent history shows, Thomas is not afraid to switch things up on short notice – especially with a green jacket on the line.

Titleist AVX golf balls: The new Titleist AVX, a three-piece multilayer urethane cover ball, continues to meet the specific demands of players looking for a softer-feeling, lower-flying and lower-spinning counterpart compared to the company’s flagship Pro V1. The latest upgrade to AVX aims to provide both a little more distance on mid-irons and a little more greenside spin than past AVX versions. The key changes involve more velocity from a high-gradient core combined with more short game spin from a thicker, softer cover. The AXV retails for $50 per dozen and is available in white and high-optic yellow.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/520041-TitleistTourSoft_2024-93eda6-original-1704396814.jpg

Titleist Tour Soft, TruFeel golf balls: Although known for it’s tour-level Pro V1/V1x line, Titleist knows there are players seeking golf balls that perform more than good enough without costing you the equivalent of a filet mignon dinner per dozen. That’s where the Tour Soft and TruFeel models come in. The Tour Soft provides golfers with more distance off the tee and increased spin into the green. All while providing a soft feel off the face. The TruFeel has a revamped core, cover and aerodynamics package to deliver more yards with the ability to play a variety of greenside shots. The Tour Soft balls are offered in white, yellow and green and will be available in pink in July 2024, all at $40 per dozen. The TruFeel balls are available in white and yellow, with Matte Red coming on May 15, all at $25 per dozen.
