What is the weather like in the Rockies and Vancouver Island during summer?

During the summer months, expect temperatures from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) in the Canadian Rockies, with warm and pleasant days, and cooler nights, especially at higher elevations.

Vancouver Island, including Tofino and Ucluelet, experiences summer temperatures between 10°C and 20°C (50°F to 68°F). Coastal areas usually have more moderate temperatures, and Tofino is known for its wet climate, so be prepared for occasional rain showers, even in the summer months.

Please note that the weather in the mountains and the coast is very unpredictable, so we highly advise packing layered clothing for temperature variations, and waterproof options in case of light rain , to ensure you’re ready to enjoy the diverse landscapes of both the Rockies and the Island!

Am I going to see the blue lakes in the Rocky Mountains?

Lakes in the Canadian Rockies are frozen during the winter months, and start to melt in late April. Usually, you will need to wait until late June to be able to swim in them, and they’ll stay blue until October .

There are a number of factors that contribute to the lakes in the Rockies displaying the captivating shades of blue and turquoise, such as glacial and rock sediments, and the refraction of the sunlight on the water.

What is special about Tofino and Ucluelet?

The small towns of Tofino and Ucluelet are nestled on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island, and they offer a unique and captivating Canadian experience . Renowned for their untamed natural beauty, these coastal towns boast pristine beaches, ancient rainforests, and some of the world’s best surf. Tofino is specially celebrated for its vibrant arts scene and delicious seafood. Ucluelet, on the other hand, is a quieter gem with a charming harbor and picturesque landscapes.

A highlight of the region is the Wild Pacific Trail, a scenic coastal path through the lush rainforest and along the shoreline. This trail offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Whether you’re exploring the vibrant communities, indulging in optional activities, or immersing yourself in the serenity of the Wild Pacific Trail, Tofino and Ucluelet promise an unforgettable blend of coastal charm and natural wonders.

  • Trickie31 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fun trip into the backwoods with stunning views We had a fab 3 hour trip into the wilderness with Blaine. As well as spectacular views and scenery (although it was somewhat cloudy on the morning of our trip) it was great to hear about life in Port Alberni and the surrounding mountains from someone who has lived there all their life - it gave us real insight to the locality. It was fun exploring the forest roads and getting to appreciate the remoteness and silence of the mountains a short drive away from civilisation. I'd definitely recommend the tour and hopefully I'll back again one day! Read more Written August 16, 2023

The guide for the day really knew the area, shared great insights about what we were seeing, and loves the out of doors. He took us to some incredible places with amazing mountain views as well as took us to some beautifully calming mountain lakes. I would do this every day if I could! • CCC987ccc 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Adventure with a thrill plus a postcard picture at every turn! There was 3 of us adults for the ATV tour. Blain made sure we covered safety in detail and we understand the ATV plus provided all the gear we needed. We all had plenty of room on the ATV and what an adventure this did not disappoint. We had the most beautiful scenery, clear skies and lots of muddy puddles. There was plenty of times for each of us to drive. Blain showed us some amazing views and tour guide knowledge which makes you appreciate the beauty of nature which was just breathtaking. We stopped of at our own private waterfall for lunch! Wow.....we have never had that type of service with a yummy lunch. Thanks for an adventurous ride, with this tour we could get into see the back country and go places where only locals would be able to go off road. This is one to add to the memory books! Fun for all and lots of mud if you choose. Would highly recommend if you want something different and a bit adventurous. Read more Written October 7, 2019
  • 4kidstrip 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing scenery and fun for any age! We visited the Island in July, and booked a four hour Razor tour with Blaine in Port Alberni. I was skeptical whether I would enjoy this, but this was planned by my husband. To add insult to injury, we started out in the rain. I was wrong! This was one of the highlights of our trip! The views along the mountain were breathtaking- cliffs, waterfalls, mountain streams. Blaine was an amazing tour guide- very professional, safety conscious, knowledgeable (even pointed out mountain berries that we could eat), and so very friendly! He took time to stop at different scenery, and even allowed us to park our ATVs and explore a bit. Can't thank him enough for making our day so enjoyable! To top off an incredible adventure, he sent us pictures that he took- and we didn't have to pay an extra fee like most tours! Well done- highly recommend- you won't regret it! • Nihad K 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly recommended! Our ATV tour of the back country with West Coast Edge was a blast! We are a couple who wanted a short wilderness adventure with a bit of a dirt-bike-ish flavor, and we found what we were looking for in the Nahmint Valley half-day ATV tour with West Coast Edge. Our terrific guide, Blain, is affable, knowledgeable, and professional, and provided all the gear, snacks, guidance, and inspiration for a truly memorable experience. We covered dozens and dozens of kilometers in this spectacular territory. Between the adrenaline-laced traverses on our Polaris RZR ATV, including climbs of many hundreds of vertical feet, Blain stopped frequently in interesting locations where we could recharge, pick Blain’s brain about the valley, mountains, lakes, wildlife, and people, and just soak up the magnificent beauty of the place. An unexpected bonus was the brilliant pictures Blain took of us in various stunning locations, giving us a wonderful record of a great day. One of the highlights was during one of our stops, high above Nahmint Lake, where we noticed a majestic bald eagle circling hundreds of feet below us, and watched it effortlessly spiral up to us, riding the ridge/thermal lift, and then continue upward until it specked out hundreds of feet above us. Unforgettable! Thanks a million, Blain, for an amazing experience! Read more Written July 7, 2019

We had all kinds of weather and were so glad we wore the rain suits they provided as it did get muddy. Blain was an amazing guide, lots of fun and put up with our gang. He was very knowledgeable and was very safety conscious. I was a bit concerned about being out for 5 hours but it went by so quickly. We stopped at some amazing lookouts and had a campfire and hot chocolate with cookies, cheese and crackers and water. I would highly recommend this for any age group. It takes you on logging roads through the Nahmint Valley to some breathe taking views. Our tour guide, Blain, was super knowledgeable and certainly took the “wow” factor of this trip up a notch. Our most cherished memories of this experience are swimming in the crystal-clear glacier waters (yes it was very cold!), eating various wild berries, and relaxing at the beautiful viewpoints. There are three separate sections  of the Pacific Rim National Park, each with varying levels of accessibility – Long Beach Area , The West Coast Trail , and The Broken Group Islands .

This blog post is going to focus on the Long Beach area , as it is the most accessible to visitors planning a fun Vancouver Island road trip or things to do in Tofino, BC.

We’ll touch on the other two sections briefly at the end. This way, you can decide if those sections are right for you and your adventure ahead!

Here are some quick directions to Pacific Rim National Park from major cities on Vancouver Island:

Recent History of Pacific Rim National Park

TL;DR: Surf Culture exploded near Tofino bringing thousands of visitors, thus spurring the country to preserve and protect this unique area officially in 1970.

We acknowledge the presence of First Nation groups that have cared for and occupied these lands for many years before it was established as a national park. The Nuu-chah-nulth and Tla-o-qui-aht of the Long Beach area, the Huu-ay-aht, Ditidaht, Pacheedaht, and the Hupacasath of the West Coast Trail, and the Tseshaht in the Broken Group Area.

Officially established in 1970 as a National Park Reserve, the Pacific Rim area had actually been seen for its amazing recreation potential and natural beauty for many decades before its inauguration.

In the late 1920s, the first request for its park status was put into play. But after some initial surveys, it wasn’t considered for status alongside established parks like Banff and Yoho. This is because at the time, it was extremely difficult to reach this part of Vancouver Island , and the unpredictable weather, fog, and dangerous shores deterred some of the first surveyors.

Nevertheless, the Victoria Chamber of Commerce didn’t give up on protecting this area, and it was established as Wickaninnish Beach Provincial Park in 1958.

From that point on,  the area drew thousands of visitors to the Pacific Rim’s amazing beaches and the Tofino area, thus spurring the start of the surf culture in Canada . It became so popular so fast, that towns like Ucluelet and Tofino constantly reached their max capacity, forcing people to create temporary driftwood shacks and camp on the beach just to stay.

The locals made a justified uproar about the mass flood of trash, people, and vehicles sinking in the sand that the Canadian National Park Association couldn’t ignore their plea for preservation and infrastructure any further. After many years of fighting to protect the land, the Pacific Rim National Park was officially established in 1970 and preserved for visitors to enjoy from that point on!

Things To Do In Pacific Rim National Park: Long Beach Area

Before you explore…stop by the visitors center.

Unlike visiting Banff or Jasper National Parks (which have gates to enter and exit the park), the Pacific Rim National Park is open to thru-traffic. Regardless, you need to purchase a Park pass to visit Pacific Rim National Park Preserve. Park rangers frequent the parking lots, so make sure to display it on your vehicle’s dashboard!

If you’re staying for a bit longer in the area, don’t forget to check out our Tofino packing list and some of the best places to stay in Tofino (for all budgets) . These resources come with lots of great weather considerations, especially if you are new to planning a trip to the Pacific Northwest.

Stop by these places to pick up a pass:

Climb Up To Radar Hill

Radar Hill is located in the northernmost area of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Just south of Cox Bay in Tofino, it’s the easiest destination to reach from the Tofino town center .

Radar Hill is a historic radar station site used during World War II. The path to Radar Hill is an extremely short walk from the connected parking lot. If you arrive on a clear day, you will be able to see spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean , Clayoquot Sound , and the Tofino Inlet with its multiple islands and mountains in the distance.

This is a short, wheelchair-accessible path perfect for the entire family. Come for a quick view of the area and continue your adventurous itinerary of things to do in the Pacific Rim National Park!

Watch Surfers At Long Beach

Long Beach is the largest beach in Pacific Rim Nation Park, stretching over 10 miles of coastline between Tofino and Ucluelet.

Long Beach has some of the most gnarly waves for surfing, so this beach isn’t for first-timers. No worries though, you can still come to visit and go storm-watching and/or watch the pros!

The year-round swell gives surfers an excuse to catch the waves any time, so don’t be surprised when you visit Pacific Rim National Park in winter and find them dotting the coast!

If you hope to try your hand at cold-water surfing in the area, we suggest checking out the shops and surf schools in Tofino , about a 20-30 minute drive north of Long Beach.

In town, you can rent boards and wetsuits (trust us, you’ll need one, the water is COLD), and even get yourself some lessons too!

  • Pacific Surf Co

Find Shore-Swept Treasures At Combers Beach

Combers Beach is located just south of Long Beach , only separated by a small overgrown bluff that sticks out on the beach. It also connects with Wickaninnish Beach to the south!

To reach the beach, take a short but steep trail down to the beach (500 meters each way) to enjoy this quieter beach in Pacific Rim National Park. Here, you will find plenty of driftwood and treasures that the ocean decides to wash ashore.

Make sure to pick up a Canada National Park Pass and display it on the dash of your car. Unlike Banff National Park , there is no official entry, so park rangers frequent the parking lots to make sure visitors come with valid passes.

The South Beach Trail Is The Most Beautiful Beach in Pacific Rim National Park

If you’re looking for beautiful scenery, the trail to South Beach is arguably one of the best hiking trails in Pacific Rim National Park.

This 1.6-kilometer hike begins at the Kwisitis Visitor Center and guides you through a dense forest . Along the way, there are optional stops at Lismer Beach and an extended trail option to the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Trail. After the trail junction, you’ll encounter a series of boardwalks and stairs that will bring you to the sandy shores of South Beach.

Once you arrive at the beach, you’ll be greeted with impressive rock formations , crashing waves, and endless ocean vistas. The sea stacks are quite striking as they are one of the first features you will see upon arrival.

Come during low tide to have access to the most beach possible. Oppositely, come during high tide to watch the waves dramatically crash against the rocks and watch ocean spray shoot up in the air.

Safety Note: This section of the Pacific Rim National Park is known for its unpredictable waves. It has often been labeled  the most dangerous beach in the park . Don’t ever turn your back on the ocean, and be aware of the tide schedule for the day to be as safe as possible.

Discover Epic Coastline Views On The Wild Pacific Trail

The Wild Pacific Trail is not part of Pacific Rim National Park. It does provide views of the Broken Group Islands, however, which ARE part of the park!

The Wild Pacific Trail is located on the southern tip of the Ucluelet Peninsula. Nine kilometers of trail hugs the edge of this  dramatic shoreline on a series of loop hikes, showing off its incredible views of Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands.

Built by the  Wild Pacific Trail Society , this trail was the passion project of “Oyster Jim” Martin who wanted to showcase the beauty of the rugged coast to all the visitors in the area.

Stay awhile to spot the abundant sea life that lives along the shoreline here. You can quite often spot a lazy group of sea lions soaking up the sun or eagles finding their midday snack.

You’ll find two options for hiking the trail:

  • The Lighthouse Loop:  A loop trail on the southern tip of the Ucluelet Peninsula, circling around at 2.6 kilometers. It brings you to the endpoint, the Amphitrite Point Lighthouse.
  • The Artist Trail:  This 5-kilometer trail has several side trails that peek out to wild and rugged vistas that only get more dramatic as you walk further! This is the ideal trail to take during sunset.

Wander The Shorepine Bog Trail

The Shorepine Bog Trail is located near the Kwisitis Visitors Center, close to the South Beach Trail and the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Trail. The bog provides is a short, 0.8-kilometer boardwalk trail that brings you through this unique ecosystem in Tofino.

The bog is located in a cool, moist location, unique for its acidic soil and interesting plant species. Some of the most notable plants here are the  Sphagnum moss (a kind of peat moss), and the Shore Pine , known for their irregular growing shape.

Find Solitude On The Rainforest Trail

Giant Western Red Cedar and Western Hemlock trees tower over this short but sweet trail south of Long Beach. The Rainforest Trail is an easy walk along wooden boardwalks and is perfect for gazing at the ancient trees.

Choose either Route A (north of Highway 4) or Route B (south of Highway 4). There is not a stop sign for pedestrians and vehicle speeds are fast in this area. Be alert when crossing the road!

Berty and I chose to take Route B, which took us on a peaceful journey through the lush, 800-year-old forest! There are interpretive signs along the route, which gave us really interesting information about this unique ecosystem.

Unlike many of the other hikes in Pacific Rim National Park that are in earshot from crashing waves, this trail is quite peaceful.  With only the sound of chirping birds and the breeze through the trees to break the silence, it can provide a silent relief to busy lives.

Come for a morning walk with a piping hot cup of coffee from the nearby coffee shop, Tofitian!

Learn About First Nation Cultures At The Kᵂisitis Visitors Centre

Note: The Kwisitis Visitor Center is currently closed for remodeling. We’re including the information below as it is projected to re-open mid-March, 2020.

The Kwisitis Visitor Centre is one of the most beautiful ones in the area! Located on the shores of Wickaninnish Beach, the building provides floor to ceiling windows to look out onto the water. There are also observation decks outside and several boardwalks around the perimeter.

On the inside, you can find the majority of the Kwisitis Visitor Center dedicated to the First Nation culture.

Its impressive display will give visitors a deeper understanding of the land they will enjoy. This is why we think it’s a great first stop on your Pacific Rim National Park itinerary!

Curious about the other sections of the park? Here’s a brief description below!

The West Coast Trail

The more we research details about the West Coast Trail, the more intrigued and intimidated we become!

Open just a short window from May to October, this 75-kilometer (46.6-miles) trail is for experienced backpackers only . The trail consists of several ladders, hand-pulled cable cars, hiking through several beaches, and winding deep in the Canadian rainforest.

The entire West Coast Trail takes around 5-7 days to complete.  Hikers must also meet an age requirement to obtain a permit! Start at Pachena Bay Trailhead in Pacific Rim National Park. Additionally, you can start on the opposite side in Port Renfrew to begin this epic adventure.

Broken Group Islands

Located in the Barkley Sound, this area of the Pacific Rim National Park includes more than 100 islands. It’s only accessible by boat, snorkeling, and diving if you dare!

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure on Vancouver Island, you can plan a multi-day kayaking tour around the islands. In fact, it’s one of the most popular ways to explore this section of Pacific Rim National Park!

This trip boasts crystal clear waters and several camping spots on the islands. This means you can hop around and plan your route to stay at your favorite ones!

We have never done anything quite like this before, having always organised our own travel arrangements in the past, and were a little anxious about how it may go. It absolutely exceeded our expectations. Everything went to plan. By and large great accommodation, comfortable bus and fun side trips. There was only a small group on the tour and all were fun travelling companions. The standout for us was out tour guide and driver - Meghan. She absolutely made it special. Her energy, professionalism, good nature, general knowledge and tolerance did not go unnoticed. Every morning she greeted us with a big smile and happy demeanour and that is not easy with so many different personalities in a group tour. We felt safe and secure at all times too, as her driving ability and skills were spot on. She really made sure we were all looked after and that individual requests were honoured where possible. In fact, it was so good we have decided to do another group tour next year in Europe. Fingers crossed it's as good as this one! Read more Written November 30, 2023

  • Y3641VRlisae 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A great trip and a wonderful experience! I did the Western Canada & Tofino Pacific Rim tour. This trip was just wonderful from beginning to end! I booked the trip in May and the communication with Kira from the office staff was great. She replied very fast whener I contacted her and had answers to all my questions. For the first part of my trip Richell was my tourguide. She is a lovely person who loves the great outdoors of Canada and did a fantastic job taking care of all of us and make our trip fun and easy. Since we where ther during shoulder season some of the attractions like gondolas or certain roads to view point where already close. But Discover Canada Tours always had an alternative and made Richelle made sure we had a great time. She always had personal recommendations on where to go for dinner and what to do in our free time. For the second part of the trip Jakob was my tourguide and he did a great job as well. He coordinated all our free time activities in Tofino and was our shuttle from the hotel to the town and back. He communicated very well regarding the shuttle times and always made sure that we where all taken care of. He did a guided walk through one of the forests and thought us a lot about the trees and mushrooms. On the last day it was raining a lot so he talked to everyone to come up with a plan on what to do that day. He really listened to what the group wanted and made sure we had a good time. To me it seemed like the tour guides really care about respecting the First Nations people. Both of them know a lot about the First Nations groups of the terretories we went to and gave us a lot of information about them. Richelle also adressed the very dark episode of the boarding schools in a way that was well balanced between pointing it out, acknowledging that it happed and how horrible it was but at the same time she made sure it would not be too overbearing for a group of tourists who wanted to enjoy the country. I would defenetly recommend Discover Canada Tours and would book a trip with them again. Read more Written October 20, 2023
  • zialydia 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not worth it !! Day 1 - After visiting town of Hope for coffee and toilet break, the bus breaks down just outside of Merritt. We were left on side of road for up to 3 hours for repair, with mechanic having to go back to town twice for parts. This caused every other stop to be shorted. The wine tasting in Kelowna was limited to half an hour, and those who did not wish to taste wine without food was prohibited from order food because we were only there for 30 minutes. The time spent in town was only enough get dinner at first available restaurant, and hop back on bus. There was no time to explore the town or look at various places to eat at and decide. Arrival in Revelstoke was after 9pm, therefore, no time to explore town, since most places were closed and the hotel bar/restaurant closed at 10pm. Could not even explore town in the morning, because breakfast was so early and only half an hour before bus left. Day 2 - advertised option to go canoeing. This could not be done, and is not supported by tour guide because the stops at the lakes are so short, that it cannot be done, because you pay for half to one hour, and stops and half hour plus waiting time for canoe that can be anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes. One of the attractions for us was to canoe on the lakes. In order to do that, we had to stay at Lake Louise when rest of tour left, and pay for public bus to take us back to Banff after. This meant, we missed out on visiting Lake Moraine with tour. The bus we bought tickets for, seats reservations first, with only standing room for us, or else wait an hour for next bus. As a result, we missed out on time in Banff, and returned in time to get dinner only. Day 3 -There was no sight seeing tour in Banff, after breakfast we made our way via to Columbia Icefields via Bow Lake (no stop), stopped at Peyto Lake briefly. A quick stop off for lunch around 11.30am before going to Icefields. I'm not sure why we stopped for lunch so early when food is available at the Icefields? There is an optional tour to the Glacier, we were not informed that if you chose not to do the tour, you would have to wait around with nothing to do for several hours until the optional tour was complete. We literally had nothing to do, and could not go anywhere because we were stuck in the middle of no where. Could not even buy food, since we advised that the 11.30 stop off was for lunch. This delay, left us with time for dinner in Jasper, no free time to explore this beautiful town. Drive to hotel in Valemount is some distance, we arrived very late. Again, no time to explore, as everything was closed. Day 4 - Breakfast a bit later and more relaxed. Spahats fall beautiful, long drive back to Vancouver, with short stop in Hope. Tour guide Chris and bus driver Mr Yee, were great, and very knowledgeable. I was very disappointed with the lack of time spent in Revelstoke, Banff, and Jasper. The whole reason for doing this tour was to visit/explore these towns, and canoe in Lake Louise. It is a lot of money to spend, for a tour that only allows 30 mins if that in the advertised locations. Read more Written October 19, 2023

The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is a magnificent amalgam of mountains, coastal rainforest, wild beaches and unspoiled marine landscapes stretching intermittently for 125km between the towns of Tofino in the north and Port Renfrew to the south. It divides into three distinct areas: Long Beach , which is the most popular; the Broken Group Islands , hundreds of islets only accessible to sailors and kayakers; and the West Coast Trail , a tough but popular long-distance hike. The whole area has also become a magnet for surfing and whale-watching . By taking the MV Frances Barkley from Port Alberni to Bamfield or Ucluelet and back, and combining this with shuttle buses or scheduled buses from Victoria, Port Alberni and Nanaimo, a wonderfully varied combination of itineraries is possible around the region.

The West Coast Trail

Whale-watching, bear-watching, fishing, surfing, kayaking and hiking, whale-watching in pacific rim national park.

Lying north of Long Beach, Tofino , once a fishing village, has been dramatically changed by tourism, but with its natural charm, scenic position and plentiful accommodation, it still makes the best base for general exploration. Ucluelet , 40km to the southeast, is comparatively less attractive, but almost equally geared to providing tours and accommodating the park’s 800,000 or so annual visitors.Unless you fly in, you’ll enter the park on Hwy-4 from Port Alberni, which means the first part you’ll see is Long Beach , shadowed along its length to Tofino by Hwy-4. Note that the beautiful (105km) stretch of road from Port Alberni to the park’s visitor centre requires careful driving – much of it is windy and adjoined by sheer drops. At “The Junction”, where Hwy-4 forks east for Ucluelet and west for Tofino, you’ll find the Pacific Rim National Park visitor information centre. Bamfield , a tiny and picturesque community with a limited amount of in-demand accommodation, lies much farther southeast (it’s 190km from Ucluelet by road) and is known mainly as the northern trailhead of the West Coast Trail.

The weather on this part of the island boasts short but sunny summers and a soaking rainy season (an average of 330cm of rain falls annually), but the motto for this part of the world is that there’s no such thing as bad weather – just the wrong clothes; so bring boots and a rain coat and spend your time admiring crashing Pacific breakers, hiking the backcountry and surfing. In the off-season (Jan & Feb), storm-watching has become a popular pastime, and rates for accommodation tend to be cheaper.

The most accessible of the park’s components, Long Beach is just what it says: a long tract of wild, windswept sand and rocky points stretching for about 30km south from Tofino to Ucluelet. Around 19km can be hiked unbroken from Schooner Bay in the west to Half Moon Bay in the east. The snow-covered peaks of the Mackenzie Range provide a scenic backdrop, while behind the beach lies a thick, lush canopy of coastal rainforest. The white-packed sand itself is the sort of primal seascape that is all but extinct in much of the world, scattered with beautiful, sea-sculpted driftwood, smashed by surf, broken by crags and dotted with islets and rock pools oozing with marine life.

Long Beach, while a distinct beach in itself, also rather loosely refers to several other beaches to either side, the relative merits of which are outlined opposite. If you haven’t done so already, driving Hwy-4 along the beach area is the best time to call in at the Pacific Rim National Park Visitor Centre .

Long Beach is noted for its wildlife , the BC coastline reputedly having more marine species than any other temperate area in the world. As well as the smaller stuff in tidal pools – starfish, anemones, snails, sponges and more – there are large mammals like whales and sea lions, in addition to thousands of migrating birds (especially in Oct & Nov), notably pintails, mallards, black brants and Canada geese. Better weather brings out lots of beachcombers (Japanese glass fishing floats are highly coveted), clam diggers, anglers, surfers, canoeists, windsurfers and divers, though the water is usually too cold to venture in without a wet suit, and rip currents and rogue lumps of driftwood crashed around by the waves can make swimming dangerous. And finally, resist the temptation to pick up shells as souvenirs – it’s against park regulations.

As this is a national park, some of Long Beach and its flanking stretches of coastline have been very slightly tamed for human consumption, but in a most discreet and tasteful manner. The best way to get a taste of the area is to walk the beaches or forested shorelines themselves – there are plenty of hidden coves – or to follow any of nine very easy and well-maintained hiking trails .

Long Beach walks

With an eye on the weather and tide, you can walk more or less anywhere on and around Long Beach. Various trails and roads drop to the beach from the main Hwy-4 road to Tofino, including nine official trails (two are closed), most of them short and very easy – you could tackle a few in the course of a leisurely drive along the road. All the paths are clearly marked from Hwy-4, but it’s worth picking up a guide from the visitor centre. Trail specifics are highlighted below.

1 & 2 Willowbrae and Halfmoon Bay (1.4km and 500m). Linked, level wooded trail that drops steeply onto tiny Half Moon Bay or the larger Florencia Bay to the north.

3 Closed for safety reasons.

4 South Beach (800m). Runs above forest-fringed coves before reaching South Beach, famous for its rock-crashing breakers.

5 Nuu-chah-nulth (2.5km). Follows the South Beach trail for a bit, then passes through rainforest.

6 Shorepine Bog (800m). Wheelchair-accessible boardwalk trail that winds through fascinating stunted bog vegetation; trees which are just a metre or so tall here can be hundreds of years old.

7 Rainforest (1km). Two small loops that follow a boardwalk through virgin temperate rainforest.

8 Combers Beach (500m). Idyllic walk along a sugary sand beach.

9 Schooner Cove (1km). Leads through superb tranches of rainforest to an extremely scenic beach at Schooner Cove.

10 Radar Hill (100m). Steep viewpoint with magnificent sea and mountain views.

One of North America’s classic walks, the West Coast Trail (WCT) starts 5km south of Bamfield and traverses exceptional coastal scenery for 75km to Port Renfrew. It’s no stroll, and though very popular it still requires experience of longer walks, proper equipment and a fair degree of fitness (and numbers are strictly limited). Still, many people do the first easy stage as a day-trip from Bamfield. Reckon on six to eight days for the full trip; carry all your own food and be prepared for rain, treacherous stretches, thick soaking forest and almost utter isolation.

Mariners long ago dubbed this area of coastline the “graveyard of the Pacific”, and when the SS Valencia went down with nearly all hands here (a few of the crew survived) in 1906 the government was persuaded that constructing a trail would at least give stranded sailors a chance to walk to safety along the coast. The path followed a basic telegraph route that linked Victoria with outlying towns and lighthouses, and was kept open by linesmen and lighthouse keepers until the 1960s, when it fell into disrepair. Early backpackers reblazed the old trail, which now passes through the land of the Huu-ay-aht First Nation around Bamfield, Ditidaht First Nation country in the trail’s middle section and ends in Pacheedaht First Nation land near Port Renfrew.

Weather is a key factor in planning any trip; the trail is only open May to September, July and August being the driest months; during that period it’s patrolled by wardens, and locals are on hand to ferry you (for a fee) across some of the wider rivers en route.

While TOFINO is showing the effects of its ever-increasing tourist influx, locals are keeping development to a minimum, clearly realizing they have a vested interest in preserving the salty, waterfront charm that brought them – and visitors – here in the first place. Sleepy in the off-season, the place erupts into a frenzy during the summer.

Crowning a narrow spit, the fishing village is graced with magnificent views. There’s an unexpectedly rich restaurant scene, as well as top-notch accommodation and a wide variety of boat and seaplane tours. Most of the latter have a whale-watching , surfing (Canada’s best surf is close at hand) and fishing angle or provide a means to travel out to the nearby islands and hot springs .

It’s worth visiting the small Whale Centre at 411 Campbell St, home to artefacts centred on local seafaring and First Nations culture. Another notable spot is the Eagle Aerie Gallery , 350 Campbell St, a gallery housed in a traditional longhouse-style building with a cedar interior.

Three fine beaches lie southeast of town: MacKenzie Beach , Cox Bay and Chestermano Beach (for access to the latter take Lynn Rd right just beyond the Dolphin Motel ). The quietest beach around is Tonquin : ask at the visitor centre for directions.

Tofino activities

There are plenty of whale-watching operators in town (the season runs from March to mid-Oct), most offering similarly priced excursions : all you need do is decide what sort of boat you want to go out on – Zodiacs (inflatables), which are bouncier, more thrilling and potentially wetter, or rigid-hull cruisers (covered or uncovered), which are more sedate (see Whale-watching in Pacific Rim National Park). If you take tours to Meares Islands and Hot Springs Cove, you stand a good chance of seeing whales en route – some operators try to combine whale-watching with excursions. Reckon on spending around $90 for a two- or three-hour trip in a Zodiac or rigid-hull. Operators in Tofino include:

Jamie’s Whaling Station 606 Campbell St t 250 725 3919, t 1 800 667 9913, w jamies.com . Founded in 1982, this offers a whale-watching choice of Zodiac boats ($99) or the 20m Leviathan II , which comes with heated cabin ($109). If you don’t see whales, Jamie’s offers vouchers which can be used on another trip. Also runs the same themed tours as Ocean Outfitters. Has another location in Ucluelet at 168 Fraser Lane ( t 1 877 726 7444).

Ocean Outfitters 368 Main St t 250 725 2866, t 1 877 906 2326, w oceanoutfitters.bc.ca . Offers 2.5hr whale-watching tours (March to mid-Oct) on rigid ($89) or Zodiac boats ($89), as well as bear-watching (April–Oct; $89), hot springs (year-round; $119) and Meares Island tours (year-round; $25).

Remote Passages 51 Wharf St t 250 725 3330, t 1 800 666 9833, w remotepassages.com . Also long-established (since 1986) is Remote Passages, another laudable operation running whale-watching (Zodiacs, $89; cabin, $95), hot springs ($115), bear-watching ($89) and sea-kayaking tours ($79).

West Coast Aquatic Safaris 101a Fourth St t 250 725 9227, w whalesafaris.com. Offers whale-watching tours, sheltered fishing outings ideal for families or novices, as well as three daily trips to the Hot Springs Cove ($129).

In addition to these tours, many of the companies listed above also offer bear-watching, kayaking, hiking, fishing charters and other tours. Guided hikes and easy nature rambles in the forest and along the seashore are offered by several companies; contact the visitor centre in Tofino for details. Tofino is quickly becoming the surfing capital of Canada thanks to some enormous Pacific waves.

Braedy Mack Charters 899 Brabant Place t 250 726 8499, t 1 888 732 3077, w fishingtofino.ca . A long-established fishing specialist who’s quite happy to have novices aboard.

Paddle West Kayaking 606 Campbell St t 250 725 3232, w paddlewestkayaking.com . For kayaks (no experience required), this operator offers 2hr 30min, 4hr and 6hr trips ($59/75/99). Also runs longer, customized tours with lodge accommodation or wilderness camping.

Surf Sister 625 Campbell St t 250 725 4456, w surfsister.com. Learn to surf with a friendly local company founded in 1999, whose all-female instructors will have even the most timid novice up on their feet and catching their first wave by the end of a lesson. Wetsuits and boards are provided ($79).

Located 8km south of the main Hwy-4 Port Alberni junction, UCLUELET means “People of the Sheltered Bay”, from the aboriginal word ucluth – “wind blowing in from the bay”. It was named by the Nuu-chah-nulth, who lived here for centuries before the arrival of whites who came to exploit some of the world’s richest fishing grounds immediately offshore. Today the port is still the third largest in BC by volume of fish landed, a trade that gives the town a slightly dispersed appearance and an industrial fringe, and makes it less appealing than Tofino, if nonetheless a popular base for anglers, whale-watchers, watersports enthusiasts and visitors headed for Long Beach to the north.

The nearest trails are at Terrace Beach , east of the town off Peninsula Road before the lighthouse. A longer and more coherent hike, the Wild Pacific Trail, stretches 14km and links with Halfmoon Bay near Florencia Bay and Long Beach in the national park. The trail starts at the end of Coast Guard Drive, passing the nearby Amphitrite Point Lighthouse (which has great views of the sea and is perfect for storm-watching) and the He-Tin-Kis Park, where a boardwalk enables you to complete this first section as a loop.

The Pacific Rim National Park is one of the world’s best areas for whale-watching , thanks to its location on the main migration routes, food-rich waters and numerous sheltered bays. It’s easy to find a boat going out from Tofino, Ucluelet or Bamfield, most charging around $60–80 a head for the trip depending on duration (usually 2–3hr).

Even if you don’t take a boat trip, you stand a chance of seeing whales from the coast as they dive, when you can locate their tails, or during fluking, when the animals surface and “blow” three or four times.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Activity Rating: MODERATE   If your tour is rated as “Moderate”, you will need a reasonable level of fitness. While it may not be as strenuous as difficult or advanced trails, it still involves some elevation changes that may pose a challenge to individuals with certain health conditions.   You will need to be able to walk for 3-4 hours at a time on undulating paths. Most of the route is hard packed sand, uneven boardwalks and rain forest trails. You will receive instructions and a full briefing by your experienced hiking guide before you set off. Contend with occasional steep section but primarily gradual. Few hazards such as uneven terrain, roots, creek crossings and slippery rocks. Good mobility is required.   This route does have a small creek crossing that requires the removal of shoes in order to cross the shallow water. Summer months the creek is only a few inches deep and on occasion there is a driftwood bridge (see image in gallery below for reference). By choosing to hike on a trail with a moderate rating, you acknowledge and accept the risks associated with outdoor activities.   Trail Length   9 km (5.5 miles)     Trail Elevation   50 m (165 ft)

Un tourism | bringing the world closer.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

Jan

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .

Feb

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.

Mar 2021

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

April 2021

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

  • The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
  • International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
  • Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
  • The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
  • The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
