Why (and How) to Take a Plant Tour

By adopting a systematic approach to plant tours, visitors can uncover and communicate a wealth of strategic and operating information.

In recent years, managers have recognized how manufacturing capabilities contribute to a company’s overall strategic strength. The ability to respond quickly to customers’ orders, to customize products to match customers’ exact requirements, or to ramp up production rapidly can be a powerful and difficult-to-imitate competitive weapon. But many corporate managers identify their plants’ capabilities only by accident—as a result of chance conversations with plant managers or operations specialists. Consequently, many managers do not have the information necessary to cultivate, shape, and exploit their company’s manufacturing capabilities. As plants develop, however, they need guidance to build capabilities that meet current and future needs. Plant tours can be a powerful way of providing factories with that kind of direction.

12 Tips to Improve Your Plant Tours

Whether you’re expecting state legislatures, corporate officials, or potential investors, you and your team should always be prepared to give quality, effective plant tours. There are a few things you can do to ensure a positive experience, and of course, the highest level of safety when touring guests around your plant.

1. Maintain good housekeeping before the visit.

While it might not seem as though appearance matters, it does when you host visitors. Especially when your visitors might be used to working in a corporate office environment. Make sure you cover the basics: dispose of waste, keep your floors and windows clean, and make sure the general layout of your plant is neat and orderly.

2. Be a generous host.

Does your plant produce a food or beverage that your guests can sample? If so, offer them one upon arrival or at an appropriate time during the tour. Anything you can do to make the tour experience more authentic, the better received the visit will be. Distribute product samples, look at prototypes, and offer some sort of souvenir that embodies what you manufacture.

3. Double (and triple) check compliance regulations.

Before you allow anyone into your facility, check to make sure all of your operating equipment and machinery comply with federal regulations. Then, check them again. You’ll want to verify safety and environmental compliance and make sure your plant is in accordance with all of them.

4. Emphasize safety.

Speaking of safety, it’s extremely important to provide your guests with the proper safety equipment upon arrival. Lend them safety glasses, headsets , gloves, and anything else that might be necessary for a safe experience in your plant. In this situation, the phrase “better safe than sorry” truly applies.

5. Use the right spokesperson.

Finding the right person to give your plant tour is key to providing your visitors with a quality experience. You want to choose someone who will engage the audience, make the tour interesting, and also be able to answer any questions the visitors might have. Devote some quality time to making sure you find the right person and ensuring they are prepared.

6. Ensure effective communication.

Allowing your tour guide to be heard, and ensuring that he or she can effectively communicate with the guests throughout the visit is perhaps the most important element of a plant tour. Utilize two-way or listen-through headsets to protect your visitors hearing but also allow for conversations to take place.

7. Show off what you do.

Throughout the tour, don’t be afraid to highlight what you and your team do exceptionally well. Take the time to explain innovations your plant has worked on and how you do things differently than your competitors. This is a time when it’s okay to tastefully brag about why your plant does things better and how you’re at the leading edge of your field.

8. Make your commentary engaging.

Good tour guides will explain machinery and processes to the visitors. Great tour guides will use examples and anecdotes to bring their machinery and processes to life. Think about ways you can incorporate relevant stories into your tour so that your audience stays engaged and interested. Show your visitors that your plant is more than just machinery and assembly lines, and prove that it fosters a hard-working team and innovative technology .

9. Introduce key team members throughout the tour.

In addition to using anecdotes and stories to illustrate your tour, engage the team as much as possible throughout. Identify and introduce key players in the plant to your guests and explain their role. Doing this will add a personal, human touch the plant tour experience and overall, will make it more memorable.

10. Document the tour, if appropriate.

If you’re giving a plant tour to a significant community member, a government official, or any other public figure, arrange for someone to take photos and/or capture video footage of the tour. This will be great press for your plant and might attract other key influencers to your company.

11. Ask for questions.

Using two-way headsets will allow your visitors to ask questions throughout the tour. If you don’t have access to a wireless communication system, make sure you end the tour in a quiet area so that your visitors can also ask questions before they leave. Use a Quiet Room or a space outside the plant itself to thank your guests for coming and address any final questions or concerns.

12. Follow up after the tour.

Send your visitors a thank-you card for taking a tour of your plant. If any of the participants were key government or corporate influencers, you’ll want to maintain those relationships and stay in touch in way that’s appropriate and professional.

SETTING UP THE PLANT TOUR

Decide Who to Invite . Consider starting with local school leaders, career and technical education faculty, and guidance counselors. Add local media, chamber of commerce executive, and elected officials.
Send the Invitation . Send a letter explaining who you are and what you would like to showcase. Include directions to the plant, as well as a requested amount of time. Once a date is set, be prepared for last-minute schedule changes.

PLANNING FOR THE MEDIA

Make attendees aware that media might be present . Once the date and time are set, contact your local media outlets, including large daily newspapers, as well as local weeklies. Offer to send your own report and photos to the paper.
Draft a media advisory, if desired . Once the date is set, draft a media advisory containing the date, time, specific location, parking accommodations, and lighting requirements, if any. Note whether the tour itself is open for press coverage. Give the location. Email the advisory along with a press kit and company information to everyone on your press list.
Prepare area for news media . Arrange for an area outside of your facility for presentations, ribbon-cutting (if appropriate), and informal discussions with the news media. This area should be in front of your company’s signage or logo.
Prepare a message from the CEO . Prepare an “op-ed” or letter to the editor from your CEO to your local newspapers on an issue related to manufacturing and manufacturing careers. Better yet, arrange a meeting with the newspapers’ editorial boards to discuss jobs in your facility. Reach out to local radio stations for an interview.

ORGANIZING THE PLANT TOUR

Put together internal planning group, if necessary . The planning group should be responsible for organizing the logistics of the plant tour.
Decide who will meet with the visitors . Your intent is to develop a good rapport with educators and others who may influence the future employees of your company and your industry.
Craft VIP introductions . Decide who will provide remarks and the topics you want to cover in welcoming school leaders and others.
Establish look and feel of welcome area . Determine how you want the entrance to your plant to appear when your guest arrives. Think about the type of signage you want to use and whether any displays will be set up here or somewhere else.
Reserve a room for school leaders to talk with your staff . Determine the best room, set up a podium and microphone if necessary, and arrange seating. Determine if refreshments will be served.
Create name badges for guests and staff . Name badges are a must for your plant tour. Create name badges for your guest and any staff that accompanies him or her, as well as employees of your plant.
Determine required safety equipment . If your plant tour requires it, determine what safety equipment will be needed. These include construction helmets, safety glasses, gloves, etc.
Brief tour guide(s) . Inform your tour guide(s) of what the plant tour will entail (what machinery, if any, will be shown on the tour, who the guest will meet with and where, the length of the tour, etc.)
Craft tour script . Write an outline of what you hope to cover during the plant tour.
Hire/designate photographer . Have a photographer on hand to take pictures of your tour event. These photos are excellent opportunities to publicize the event.
Prepare an information package . Prepare materials for your guests that emphasize the benefits good manufacturing jobs bring to workers, suppliers and your area’s economy. Put together a one-pager that highlights your company’s characteristics and accomplishments.
Research talking points, your company story, company employment needs, etc . Educate visitors on the great things manufacturing does. Share your personal stories; don’t just talk economic data or statistics.
Prepare a map of the tour route . Consult with employees to determine a route for the tour, noting which areas contain top secret information or any safety hazards. These areas should be off-limits.
Determine product display, if applicable . Proudly display your product for your visitor to see. A special exhibit, promotional materials, and company literature will enhance the visit.
Gather company literature and background materials . This information helps tell the story of your business to your guest. Include the story on your company history, philanthropic efforts, employee team news, etc.
Display materials showing your commitment to education . Displaying materials, literature, posters, etc. that show your commitment to training, your K-12 district, and technical college will serve as a reminder of your commitment to the future of manufacturing.
Provide list of attendees’ names and companies . This is great to have for networking opportunities and putting names with faces.

PREPARING FOR ARRIVAL

Designate a note taker . Assign a team member to take notes on any discussions, if possible.
Determine what machinery will be in operation . This is important, especially if you plan to highlight or show a particular piece of machinery during the tour.
Provide directions to the plant . Ensure your guests know what entrance to use; reserve parking spaces for them.
Welcome guests on arrival . Greet officials at designated area. In the event of rain, provide an umbrella if possible. Hand out name badges. Prepare guests for the possibility of going through security before entering the plant.

CONDUCTING THE TOUR

Provide safety equipment to tour guests, if applicable . Provide your guest with any items necessary for a tour, such as a construction helmet, safety glasses, gloves, etc.
Show guests how your production line works . Show your guest how your machinery works, how different items are put together, what new technologies are being used, and your workers’ overall productivity.
Let your visitor be an active participant . If feasible without shutting down production lines, offer your visitor the chance to address your entire workforce. Have the guests do something “physical,” such as shake hands, participate in a ribbon-cutting, run a machine, examine your product, or look at a computer screen. These are prime photo opportunities.
Success stories . Discuss how the plant has improved and contributed to the community. Inform visitors about your company’s history, including total investment in facilities and equipment.
Products manufactured . Describe how the products are used and where they are sold. Include the value of products you export.
Jobs . Discuss the number of people employed in your plant and others around the state or country; labor unions represented in your plant; and worker health, safety, and training programs.
Payroll and benefits . Discuss wages and the types and value of employee benefits, including profit-sharing, recreational programs, voter registration activities, health or sports facilities, credit unions, child care, educational support and discount purchases of company products. (Remind your visitor that each wage dollar multiplies in the wage earner’s community in the form of rent, food purchases, clothing purchases, medical expenses, etc. before it goes to out-of-town suppliers.)
Community impact . How much does your company pay in federal, state, and local taxes? What are your local expenditures to purchase supplies, materials, and services? Do you host town hall meetings? Does your company participate in community charities? What are you doing to support local education? Tell the guests about your active role as a good corporate citizen.
Send thank you note to guest(s) . Write a thank you note reiterating any key issues discussed during the tour.
Thank your own staff . Recognize employees who contributed their time and expertise to make the tour a success.
Send photos to attendees . Many times photos you send to guests will show up in other periodicals.
Tell WMC about the tour . To help WMC assist other companies, tell us how the tour went. Send us photos and press clippings. E-mail your information to Jim Morgan at [email protected] .
Provide press coverage . Provide the school district, technical college, and local chamber of commerce with your company newsletter and other publicity the visit generated.
Use social media to recap the tour . Publish photos, details, etc. on company social media platforms. Coordinate with WMC to post on any WMC platforms.
Continue to communicate with the guests post-event . Keep them up-to-date on new activities at the company, and leave the door open for future visits.

The struggle to find “good fit” suppliers never ends. And finding the right suppliers has never been more important than it is right now.

Global competition and the need to drive down costs has really cranked up the pressure on supply chain professionals. In some cases, you could argue that the very survival of their companies depends on their efforts.

How do you make sure – really sure – that your supplier is capable of going the distance to provide you with the price, quality and service your company needs to compete successfully?

We’re not talking about attitude here: it’s your supplier’s capabilities that matter – their ability to provide what you require while making a fair profit at the same time. You could take the sales rep’s word for it, but we strongly suggest you see for yourself.

As simple as it sounds, an actual physical tour is the best way to gather reliable information about your supplier’s capabilities: control over costs, quality commitment and service culture.

It may seem like an inconvenience or a time-waster. But that plant tour will reveal so much that it’s almost a crime not to go see. And you really can’t do it from your office or online. What is required is an old fashioned, non-virtual plant tour…… You still gotta go look!

What follows takes some effort: an 8-step approach for doing a plant tour, so that you get the insight and information you need to properly gauge your supplier’s capabilities and competitiveness.

1) Get the right tour guide

Ask for an operations person to conduct the tour. He or she will usually be pleased and proud to show off their plant. They are much more likely to have the information you need than a sales rep or an executive that’s been parachuted in for the occasion.

2) Start at Receiving

Start at the receiving door and follow the production chain to the loading dock. You’ll remember a lot better if you see the operation in a logical sequence.

You can also learn a lot at the receiving door if you know what to look for. For example, a small raw materials inventory reveals a just-in-time manufacturer: a “good fit” if your own requirements are fairly predictable. In this case, the supplier can make what you need, without tying up a lot of space or capital in non-productive inventory. . BUT, if your ordering habits aren’t predictable, then a small raw materials inventory is a red flag for potential short-shipments, especially if they don’t keep a finished goods inventory of your products.

3) Shake a few hands

Make sure to stop, look around and chat with the operators as you follow the production line. You’ll learn a lot by observing and listening. Are work areas clean and safe? Are there large piles of scrap and rejects?

Is the operator really involved or just punching buttons? Ask questions. An ‘involved’ operator will be happy to explain. More importantly, an involved operator usually means a competent operator, and competency is vital to producing the consistent, high quality, low-cost products you need.

Look for ‘control charts’ and ask the operator to explain what the lines and figures mean: how they are used to control the process. Ask about run sizes; how long changeovers take; what their biggest challenges are; what causes scrap and re-work. Explain what your company does with the products he or she makes and thank them for their contribution.

4) Take mental notes

As you’re walking around observing and asking questions, you should be filling in a mental check-list about your supplier’s overheads and structure. What is their total head count; how many are production workers? How many shifts do they run? How many square feet are devoted to production; how many in the whole building? What is the total output of this facility (measured in $ or units)?

5) Finish up at Shipping

At Shipping, you’ll learn as much (or more) than you learned at Receiving. Look for inventories again – finished goods this time. Are they ‘just-in-time’ shippers? Or do they store finished goods? Ask where your products are stored. Note quantities and space (and money) tied up.

Request that a person from Production Planning join the group at Shipping. Ask the magic question – “What can we do to be a better customer?” Would changing our ordering practices make their life easier – help them reduce set-ups or facilitate materials planning? Would small changes to our specifications allow them to run faster, or bigger batches, or reduce scrap or re-work?

You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by the answers, and, even more so, by the good ideas that flow from these kinds of positive interactions. In addition, you will have laid an important foundation for future projects and idea sharing.

6) Make a good impression/build a broad base of relationships

Meet as many people as you can from your supplier’s organization. Ask thoughtful questions; solicit their ideas; listen to the answers. You can only benefit by creating new relationships and opening wider channels of communication that don’t depend on your sales rep being the gate-keeper.

7) Put those mental notes on ‘paper’

The moment you are alone (say in your car) get out your notebook or laptop and write it all down while everything is still fresh in your mind. A quick schematic showing how their lines are set up is a good way to start. Jot down what you saw and learned (key raw materials, set-up times, etc.); your impressions (clean, dirty, size of scrap piles, operators’ knowledge and involvement). Don’t forget the answers to your general questions: square footage, numbers of people, number of shifts, etc.; and, of course, any good ideas that surfaced and the names and emails of the people you met. A thank you note is always a good touch.

When the time comes for modeling their costs or organizing joint cost-savings initiatives, all this information is invaluable. It is also useful when you’re comparing them with their competition.

8) Visit competitors

“What?” you say, “I’m still trying to figure out how to find enough time for even one tour; and now you’re talking about several!

“You can’t be serious.”…

The simple answer is “Yes.”

Learning about your own supplier’s capabilities is important, but understanding their competitiveness is even more so.

You need comparative data. You’ll be surprised by how quickly (and easily) you can detect differences between suppliers: inventory policies, competency of operators, size of scrap piles, set-up times; tightness of ‘control charts’, amount of space and staff (relative to output), and quality of ideas.

Armed with that information, it isn’t difficult to pick out the ‘best fit’ supplier. If it’s the one you’re currently doing business with, good.

If it’s not, even better!

Because this means you have likely uncovered an opportunity to make a deal with a ‘better fit’ supplier; reduce your costs, improve quality and service, and make your company’s supply chain an enduring competitive advantage.

Certainly, a fitting reward for all your hard work!

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

Forty years after putting down the Power Station broom and picking up the microphone, Jon Bon Jovi is in an introspective mood.

The man who co-wrote iconic songs including “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Keep the Faith” is preparing for the release of Hulu ’s four-part docuseries Thank You, Goodnight, directed by Gotham Chopra.

Thank You, Goodnight , which premieres April 26, highlights the highs and lows of being in a band, the drugs and the difficulties of remaining successful and wanting to evolve but not wanting to alienate its audience, in addition to its leader’s health issues. It’s not a “VH1 puff piece,” according to Bon Jovi.

Was it tough to open up? Jon Bon Jovi, sitting in a hotel room in Los Angeles, told Deadline that it wasn’t.

“One thing I do know about a 40-year career is, if you don’t tell the truth, the lies will catch up to you,” he said. “You won’t remember who you bullshitted. It’s always best to just tell the honest-to-God truth. Then you can remember what you said. I don’t mind living that truth. Part of our continuing success is that I’m not trying to be something I used to be. This isn’t the ‘80s — I’m not here on a nostalgia tour. We have a new record coming that I’m very excited about, I’m not dying my hair, I’m not a fat Elvis, any of that horseshit.”

The series is chronological. Each episode — “New Jersey vs Everybody,” “Nowhere to Everywhere,” “Brothers in Arms” and “Legendary” – ostensibly tackles a decade in the band’s career. It kicks off with their formation in Sayreville, N.J., in 1983 after Jon spent years playing in Asbury Park with the Atlantic City Expressway, John Bongiovi and the Wild Ones and The Rest, including a memorable appearance by his hero Bruce Springsteen at The Fast Lane in 1980. “Fortunately, there was a still picture,” he said.

It’s Sambora’s appearance in the documentary that makes it sizzle. “I’m excited — are we telling the truth or we gonna lie?,” Sambora asks when he’s first introduced.

Sambora left the band in 2013. The third episode deals with his departure; addiction and family issues were involved (as well as mounting frustration over recording, in particular, a guitar part on What About Now ’s “The Fighter”).

In the series, Jon Bon Jovi is asked whether he and Richie have discussed it since (they both appeared at the band’s entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018). “No, not for lack of f*cking trying,” the singer says.

Jon says that he and Sambora are “fine” now.

“He came to see me in August, and we spent the night. Great, but, you know, 10 years ago, he decided to quit the band,” he said. “Everything was just fine, but we had a show that night. I’m going to try to say this the best way I possibly can: I was learning how to write songs and making songs. This is a band that I put together, that he was the last member to join. Then he really took an integral part by the third album, for sure. Then he left us 10 years ago. There was a before, so there’s going to be an after. I shouldn’t be questioned as to how I got a record deal and why I still have the record deal and why the band continues. With all due respect, and I mean this lovingly, when he left the band, we were heartbroken, but there was not a question of our continuing.”

Jon added that the “door is always open” for Sambora’s return. “Phil X has done an incredible job. John Shanks, my co-producer and buddy, he’s done nine of my albums,” he said. “We’d look like Lynyrd Skynyrd, but f*ck yeah, come on up. There’s always another guitar to plug in.”

Thank You, Goodnight started at a breakfast between Jon Bon Jovi and director Chopra, son of Deepak Chopra. The younger Chopra founded Religion of Sports with Tom Brady and Michael Strahan in 2016. He has directed series including Facebook Watch’s Tom vs. Time and ESPN+’s The Man in the Arena: Tom Brady . Jon Bon Jovi is a big Patriots fan.

“The breakfast we had was about the 40 years,” Chopra told Deadline. “Maybe we’d do four parts and break it up by decades. That was exciting and interesting. But then it was, ‘Tell me more about this tour that’s coming up’ — this was way before the surgery, and that just had real-time stakes. That was Year 39, at that point it wasn’t entirely clear if [they were] going to reach Year 40 from a performance standpoint. To [Jon’s] credit, not just his willingness to talk about it but to let it be documented.”

The band’s career was heavily documented since it began. The first two episodes features clips of its stadium slots with bands such as Scorpions and KISS following the success of its first album, the relatively poor performance of follow-up 7800° Fahrenheit , working with Desmond Child and Bruce Fairbairn on 1986’s Slippery When Wet , which became a giant hit, as did their next record New Jersey in 1988. There’s footage of the band’s journey to the Soviet Union – thanks to their manager Doc McGhee’s drug arrest – for the Moscow Music Peace Festival as well as their somewhat strange tour ender in Guadalajara.

Jon Bon Jovi clearly also is a hoarder, as viewers see him go through tapes of demos and lost tracks.

“I have a big space for this stuff,” he said. “Knowing that the 40th was on the horizon, because it’s about Year 38 at this point, I started thinking about it. There was bags and bags with 30 or 40 unreleased songs. There’s a couple of ’80s- and ’90s-era hits that I was like, ‘Why didn’t I put these on records?”

He added that he now is going through this archive to create a “virtual museum” of audio and video.

This comes as the band is gearing up to release Legendary , its 16th studio album, in June. But that record was made in the shadow of vocal fold medialization surgery after it became clear that Jon’s voice was not what it used to be.

He calls the vocal-cord issues “horrible.”

“Could you imagine that one cord is literally atrophy? It’s dying. The strong one is pushing the weak one, and you’re singing out of tune. I pride myself on being a singer. I’ve sung with Pavarotti. I know how to sing. Now, it’s like that athlete where you’ve got to figure it out again. I’m well into the process. But that was daunting.”

Jon Bon Jovi added that he feels the surgery was a success but that he’s “still participating in the process on a daily basis.”

“I think we did a pretty good job of covering the 40 [years],” he said. “If anything, I wish that there was an Episode 5 now, because so much has happened since we’ve wrapped.”

The majority of Bon Jovi’s peers never really made it past the ‘80s. Grunge killed off the majority of hair metal bands, and times changed. But the band kept going, and instead of relying on its previous hits, chalked up new No. 1s with such songs as 2000’s “It’s My Life” (from Crush ) as well as “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” (from 2005’s Have a Nice Day ).

The message seems clear: Work your ass off.

“There’s some kid in his bedroom right now that’s gunning for you,” he said. “It’s not dissimilar to being an athlete or a quarterback. There’s always somebody that’s coming up behind you. The work ethic was born out of who and what we were as children, who our parents brought us up to be. But then as you grow up, you’re proud of the work you do. You better have been good enough to ask Mr. and Mrs. Smith for their hard-earned dollar. I’m not going out on the road unless we’re great. You’ll never see the fat Elvis.”

Chopra compares him to Brady and Kobe Bryant, who he worked with on Showtime’s Kobe Bryant’s Muse .

“He’s similar just in terms of process, the work ethic, the obsession with details but constantly experimenting and especially with the healing, trying new things and very progressive in terms of all this stuff,” he said. “There’s also the resilience. He reminds me a lot of Kobe’s combativeness. Tom’s kind of a pushover, Jon is not, but that’s great. It creates tension, and that’s a good thing. You also adapt the filmmaking style around the subject.”

In the closing episode, Jon Bon Jovi says that he’s been “incredibly blessed” over the past 40 years, so “if it’s time to turn left, not bad.”

But did he ever worry about making a documentary about the band’s legacy while it was still going?

“Hence the title — Thank You, Goodnight , because no one knows the ending.”

Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy will get huge loyalty bonuses from PGA Tour

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are among the golfers expected to be given equity in PGA Tour Enterprises as a thank you for sticking with the Tour instead of jumping to rival LIV Golf, the Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

Woods will receive a $100 million and McIlroy a $50 million stake in the newly-formed enterprise for not taking lucrative offers from the Saudi-backed LIV as merger negotiations between the two circuits continue to drag on.

A substantial portion of current PGA Tour members will be rewarded with equity in the new for-profit entity, according to a memo sent out in February by commissioner Jay Monahan and seen by Reuters.

PGA Tour Enterprises is majority owned by the Tour and bolstered by a $1.5 billion investment by Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of sports team owners, the memo said.

The program will reward top performing members and legends who helped build the modern PGA Tour, the memo said.

The initial round of player equity grants will total $930 million and will be awarded to 193 PGA Tour members, with the majority of that going to the top 36 players as determined by a performance-based formula, the memo said.

All initial grants will require players to compete in 15 or more events on the PGA Tour and/or complete service requirements commensurate with the value of the grant.

A spokespersonfor the PGA Tour said the Tour could not comment on any detail of the Telegraph report due to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regulations and private financial information.

Bon Jovi: The Billboard Cover Story

“When I can do two-and-a-half hours a night, four nights a week and not think about it — the way that I did for the first 30 years of our career — then I’ll say, ‘Sure, I’d love the opportunity,'” says the group’s frontman, still a dreamboat at 62.

The opportunity in question is touring. On the precipice of releasing its 16th studio album, Forever , Bon Jovi isn’t sure they’ll hit the road behind the album, out June 7. The wildcard element is JBJ’s voice, the same one that implored us to live for the fight when that’s all that we’ve got on “Livin’ on a Prayer,” and melted a billion hearts on “Bed of Roses” — and which has been under heavy repair since the vocal difficulties Bon Jovi has experienced for years necessitated a major vocal cord surgery in the summer of 2022. The procedure left him unsure if he’d ever be able to sing about going down in a blaze of glory, or living while he’s alive, or anything at all, ever again.

This issue isn’t what the band’s new documentary , Thank You, Goodnight was intended to be about. The stakes, however, became quickly apparent to director Gotham Chopra when he started filming a few years back.

“The more time I spent with Jon, I was like, ‘So wait, what’s going on with your voice?'” Chopra says over Zoom. “Jon said he’d been struggling with it for a couple of years, and didn’t know what was going to happen — because the shows we were filming might be the end of the line — but that that wasn’t for the documentary.”

This narrative thus became the through line of the four-part documentary, premiering tomorrow (April 26) on Hulu. Helmed by Chopra, whose previous work includes the 2021 Tom Brady docuseries Man in the Arena , the Bon Jovi project was one, Chopra says, “where nothing was off limits.” It unpacks the Bon Jovi story from its earliest days in Bon Jovi’s native Sayreville, New Jersey to the arena-rock juggernaut of the Slippery When Wet era to the band’s lineup changes — to Jon Bon Jovi scanning his neck with specialized lasers in an attempt to shore up his voice. Interview subjects include the band (Jon Bon Jovi, keyboardist David Brian, drummer Tico Torres and newer members Hugh McDonald, Phil X and Everett Bradley), along with former manager Doc McGhee, songwriter Desmond Child, good pal Bruce Springsteen and Richie Sambora, the guitar-wielding yin to Jon Bon Jovi’s yang, who left the group in 2013.

“Obviously early on, I was like, ‘Hey, I’ve got to get Richie Sambora. We can’t do this without Richie’,” Chopra recalls, “Jon was like, ‘Oh, yeah, you gotta get Richie Sambora. You can’t do this without him.'”

With Sambora’s departure serving as one of the documentary’s central tensions, Chopra — who interviewed each person involved in the film separately — eventually even captured an onscreen apology from the guitarist.

“In the film he says, ‘I don’t regret doing it. I regret the way I did do it; I apologize to the guys for that,'” recalls Chopra. “I think the guys and Jon were pretty affected by that… All of these things become an act of therapy in some ways.”

“What he was going through wasn’t easy,” says Chopra. “There were times on that tour when he was struggling, and he was in his dressing room, and he’d be like, ‘get the f–k out of my room’ and I’d get the f–k out of his room — then gradually find my way back in after five or 10 minutes.”

This level of intimacy, along with frank, often funny and frequently poignant interviews (in the last episode Bon Jovi gets choked up about his love of songwriting) and a barrage of archival footage, combines to offer a film that even hardcore Bon Jovi fans will likely learn something from. Here, Jon Bon Jovi and Torres discuss the documentary, as well as the future of the band.

Jon, the film’s director Gotham Chopra mentioned that there were times where he was filming and you didn’t necessarily want him in the room. How vulnerable was the documentary experience?

Jon: We had to trust him as the director in order to get what we wanted, which was the truth. One thing we all agreed upon, on day one, was we didn’t want a vanity piece. [We wanted] to tell the honest-to-God ups and downs of life behind the curtain. Nobody anticipated the health issues with me, and so that was the wild card in this. But I trusted him.

Tico: Gotham is a very spiritual person, and after a while you forget he’s there. But his questions are very spiritual in nature, and somehow he opens you up to be honest with yourself. You don’t find that in regular interviews.

Jon, so much of documentary focuses on this narrative about your voice. What was it like during this uncertain time, to also be bearing it to the camera?

The surgery was nearly two years ago, and obviously you’ve recorded an album since undergoing it. How are you feeling now?

Jon: There is still uncertainty about the outcome 22 months after the surgery, although I’m optimistic. And for the record, I can say — because now I’m speaking to press and need to clarify — I’m very capable of singing again. It’s just that the bar for us is two-and-a-half hours a night, four nights a week. I have to get to that level again before we’ll tour. So being vulnerable I was never afraid of. Sharing it now with the public, it’s out of my control, because that’s what we all signed up for. And like T said, Gotham has a kind of spiritual approach to things, so it was never combative. I trusted him.

Tico: It was difficult for the band. To see one of your brothers suffering and going through something, and he’s the hardest working guy there is. Every day he works hard to get back. Right after the operation, speaking to him, once he could speak, he sounded way lower [in register] than me. And we’re a band, so we worry about each other. I think the fact that the documentary was capturing that as well is important. Because we’re in it together. We’re gonna back him up no matter what.

Gotham took the approach of interviewing everyone separately. What was it like to finally see Richie’s footage?

What was it like getting an apology from him?

Jon: I don’t need an apology… I don’t need an apology. It’s not about that.

Tico: Remember, you’re a band. We grew up together. And like I said before, when somebody’s hurting, you care about him… Alec as well, our beloved bass player, when he left, it’s a void. And you know he passed away just a couple of years ago. It’s family. It does affect you. As a whole, it affects us. There’s a comeback from that. I think the writing process and the recording process as a band helps you get that out, because it’s emotion.

Jon, in the doc you say that in the Slippery When Wet era, the band had found another rung of the ladder to climb, and obviously there was much more to go after that. Given everything you’ve done, do you see more rungs for Bon Jovi? Where is there left to go?

Jon: It’s not about numbers at all. I would love the opportunity to be whole, so that when we would go out on that stage, we could do those 18 albums and pick any song I want throughout that catalog on a nightly basis, the way I used to be able to do. That’s where I have left to go. When we’ve done those kind of shows… when we opened the O2 Arena in London and we did 12 or 15 nights, and we did 90 different songs over the course of the nights — that’s the bar that I need to get back to.

What are your current daily practices for getting yourself back to that place?

There’s some great unheard music in the documentary — I’m specifically thinking of a song called “Cadillac Man” that you wrote for the 1990 Robin Williams movie of the same name. Is there a chance that any of this archival music gets released?

Jon: Yes. One thing that we have always known, and our deep fan base knows as well, is that we always write 30 songs to get 10. And so there’s always been a backlog of material that’s been unreleased. There’s no shortage of it. So I think that we stumbled on 30 or 40 songs that no one’s heard, and they’ll all come out, yeah.

So we get new music from the Slippery When Wet heyday era Bon Jovi?

Jon: Slippery When Wet, New Jersey, Keep the Faith . All the records.

Is there a timeline for that?

Jon: No. No one’s actually even addressed it with me yet. The archiving was still going on simultaneously to the mastering and the album cover and the video and all that kind of stuff… But we know what we’ve got. It’ll happen during the course of the release of the album.

That’s incredibly exciting.

Jon: Yeah, there’s some really good songs that I can’t believe didn’t make those records.

Jon, there’s this great moment in the documentary when you share about going for long car rides with Bruce Springsteen, and you both leaving your phones at home and just driving around New Jersey and talking. What can you tell us about the last drive?

Yeah, not too many.

So yeah, we often do it, and it’s some of my most treasured memories. People have seen us along the way. The first five, six, seven times, nobody would have known. But then this time we went for an ice cream cone, or this time we went for a drink, or this time we were stopped at a light. So the sightings of Sasquatch have happened. [ Laughs. ]

I was also struck by the part of the doc where you were all talking about what your success could afford you in terms of spending one-upmanship. Like, “You bought me a car? I’m going to buy you two cars” or “We need 16 pinball machines on this tour.” Is there one extravagance from those days that sticks out to you?

Jon: There was silliness. There were absolutely cars and art and toys — because you could, and we took full advantage of it.

Through documentary you all got to review 40 years of your own personal style. Was there one look from each of yourselves that made you think, “Oh my God, I looked amazing”?

Jon: No, I take the opposite. My baby pictures were public, yours were not. We still have to suffer some of those looks. It could have been worse, but you know, some of those baby pictures were tough to look at.

Tico: I mean, if you take the clothes away, we definitely were better looking and younger. But the clothing was much to be desired. Even the haircuts were a little like, “I wish we didn’t do that.”

Some of that style has come back around though.

Jon: Oh, yes. You sit around now your kids and you go, “Those torn jeans? Let me tell you where all this stuff comes from that you’re doing.” When I see parachute pants and Capezios come back though, I’m running for the hills. [ Laughs. ]

Tico: I think we’re living the joy now. Jon’s been through a lot, and of course everybody goes through that pain with him. The joy is the revival. Doing a record together is cleansing. Jon’s lyrics — and I’m not a lyricist; I don’t listen to lyrics — but this is one of the few records where I listen to every one of them, because they just grabbed me. There was a lot of joy in making this record. I think we’re enjoying it. Jon, what do you think?

Jon: Well, we are. I’ll give you a great example: when we’re at these rehearsals and we’re just marking the progress that I’m making on a monthly basis. There’s no miracles, but when I look around the room and not once does the band sit there and go, “I don’t want to be here.” Or “I don’t want to play that song again.” That to me is love on a whole other level.

We know we’re not going out on the road tomorrow. We know we’re not being paid to sit in this rehearsal space. But the guys are like, “Of course I’ll be there. Let’s go. Let’s do it again.” Or if I crash and burn, they go, “Okay, I traveled all this way and we played an hour before I’ve gotta cool it.” Nobody has cursed me for it. They’re like, “We’re with you.” That’s the love of family and band and brotherhood that no presents, no cars, no art, no silly kids’ stuff could ever, ever replace.

Ryan Seacrest celebrates 20 years at KIIS FM with tour across SoCal to thank fans

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Ryan Seacrest celebrated 20 years at KIIS FM by going on a "Thank You" tour Thursday and he even handed out prizes to his loyal followers.

It was cheers and smiles for Seacrest as the host greeted a waiting crowd at the final stop of the tour in Burbank.

"I remember on the first day I was terrified," he told Eyewitness News. "I was so nervous, filling some very big shoes on such a legendary radio station, and to be able to do it 20 years later is incredible. I love coming to work."

The day-long "Ryan's Riding O.C. to L.A." tour made various stops throughout Southern California, like the Disneyland Resort.

The day wrapped up at a Shell gas station on Hollywood Way in Burbank - just steps away from Seacrest's previous apartment building. Fans were excited for free gas cards and a $1,000 raffle for bill money.

A lucky fan from Van Nuys walked away the winner, but meeting Seacrest was enough for others eager to meet the host.

"Ryan Seacrest is my inspiration. He's the reason I left my job. I want to be an on-air host," Ricardo Horna of West Hollywood said. "I also just admire everything that he's done - how relatable he is, how personal he is when he meets people."

One 9-year-old fan from Long Beach couldn't get enough and saw Seacrest at various stops.

In between selfies and hugs, Seacrest even graciously shared a prediction about his other hosting gig, "American Idol," ahead of the upcoming finale.

"I can't wait for this season to run its course, and then we're going to get excited about a new season," he said. "I don't know who's going to fill Katy Perry's seat, but we're going to have to make an announcement soon."
