When planning what to pack for a Royal Caribbean cruise , it’s a good idea to plan your clothing for days in port based on what activity or shore excursion you’re planning in your port of call.

Swimsuits with a cover up are just fine if you’re heading straight to a beach or a catamaran snorkeling excursion. If you’re sightseeing or taking a tour, casual clothing is perfect.

Some important things to pack are comfortable shoes for walking and a light scarf or cover up for shoulders (ladies), if you are entering religious buildings.

How formal is formal night on a Royal Caribbean Cruise?

You might be asking, how formal is formal night on Royal Caribbean? Royal Caribbean has a formal dress code on 1-3 nights during a cruise, which includes black tie formal wear as a dress suggestion. However, in our experience there is a wide range of clothing that cruise passengers actually wear and most people are not in a tuxedo or long evening gown.

Although Royal Caribbean describes the formal night dress code as night “your best black-tie look”, with suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns suggested as options, in reality it’s not as formal in practice. Royal Caribbean’s dress codes are loosely enforced, with most cruise passengers dressing less formally than this.

On a Royal Caribbean cruise formal night, you may see a few tuxedos and evening or cocktail gowns. However it’s far more common to see men in suits, or even a nice pair or pants and a dress shirt. Ladies can often be seen wearing a cocktail dress, little black dress, sundress or pants and a top.

Tip: Royal Caribbean’s formal night is a nice occasion for family members to dress up and even take a some photos with the ship’s photographer.

Royal Caribbean Theme Nights

Royal Caribbean 70's theme night

While there is no official dress suggestion for theme nights, it can be fun to bring a few special outfits for the occasion. On our cruise there was a 70’s Night Party, which is pretty common on many Royal Caribbean sailings.

To know about theme nights for your cruise, it’s a good idea to join cruise roll calls, facebook groups and take a look at the Cruise Compass from recent past sailings on your cruise ship.

Tip: Check out past cruise compasses and menus, is a great way to prepare for your cruise vacation.

Daytime Attire

The sun’s out, the ship is sailing through cerulean waters, and there’s a whole day of exciting activities ahead.

How you dress during the day aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise can impact your comfort and overall experience. Let’s break down the ideal daytime attire, ensuring you’re both comfortable and in line with the dress code on Royal Caribbean.

Casual Wear Suggestions

During the day, the cruise atmosphere leans more towards relaxation and leisure, making casual wear the go-to choice. But remember, “casual” doesn’t mean sloppy!

Men’s Attire:

  • Polo Shirts and T-Shirts: Lightweight and breathable materials are ideal.
  • Shorts: Khaki, cargo, or even tailored shorts work great. Avoid overly baggy or athletic shorts outside of the fitness areas.
  • Lightweight Trousers: For those preferring more coverage or visiting indoor dining venues.

Women’s Attire :

  • Sundresses: A breezy sundress is both stylish and comfortable.
  • Shorts and Blouses: Mix and match for a fresh look each day.
  • Skirts: Paired with a light top, they offer both comfort and style.

Pool Attire

If you’re planning to soak up the sun by the pool or dive into the refreshing waters, the right attire is crucial.

Swimwear: Choose comfortable swimsuits, whether one-piece, bikini, or trunks. Remember, overly revealing swimwear might not align with the communal spirit of the ship.

Cover-Ups: Always have a cover-up handy when moving away from the pool deck. Sarongs, kaftans, or light tunic tops are perfect choices for women, while men can opt for lightweight shirts or tees.

Footwear: Flip-flops or sandals are ideal. Consider slip-resistant options for added safety.

Wedges

Practical Tips for Daytime Dressing

  • Sun Protection: Being out at sea can amplify the sun’s effects. Choose hats, sunglasses, and clothing that can offer some sun protection.
  • Bag Cruise Essentials : Keep a lightweight bag with essentials like sunscreen, a water bottle, and perhaps a change of clothes if you’re transitioning between activities.
  • Consider the Day’s Itinerary: If your day involves both a pool session and a specialty lunch, plan your outfits (and perhaps a quick change) accordingly.

The daytime dress code on Royal Caribbean allows for flexibility, relaxation, and self-expression.

Whether you’re diving into poolside fun or exploring the ship’s myriad activities, these attire suggestions ensure you’re always dressed to impress, even under the bright sun.

Cocktail Dress

Evening Attire

As the sun sets and the ship’s lights begin to twinkle against the twilight, the Royal Caribbean undergoes a transformation. Evening activities are imbued with an air of sophistication and elegance.

Adhering to the evening dress code on Royal Caribbean ensures you’re always dressed to match the ship’s ambiance, whether it’s a casual dinner with family or a formal captain’s gala.

Casual Evenings

Not every night onboard is a grand affair. On casual evenings, you have the freedom to relax a bit with your attire, yet still maintain a polished look.

  • Jeans or Khakis: Ensure they’re clean and well-fitted.
  • Polo Shirts or Casual Button-Downs: You can never go wrong with classic colors or subtle patterns.

Women’s Attire:

  • Dresses: Casual maxi or knee-length dresses are both stylish and comfortable.
  • Skirts or Trousers: Paired with a chic blouse or top.

Smart Casual Evenings

On nights designated as ‘smart casual’, the expectation is to elevate your attire just a notch.

  • Slacks or Tailored Trousers: Opt for darker shades for a more refined look.

  • Closed-Toe Shoes: A clean, polished pair is ideal.
  • Elegant Dresses: Think cocktail dresses or sophisticated summer dresses.

Children & Teen Dress Code

Young cruisers, whether they’re toddlers or teenagers, are a vital part of the Royal Caribbean family. Ensuring they’re dressed appropriately not only adheres to the ship’s decorum but also ensures their comfort and enjoyment throughout the journey.

While the dress code on Royal Caribbean for children and teens is slightly relaxed compared to adults, there are still some guidelines worth noting.

Young Children (Ages 0-6)

At this age, comfort is paramount. Whether they’re exploring the kids’ zone or dining with family, they should feel at ease in their attire.

  • Casual Play Clothes: Think t-shirts, shorts, or lightweight dresses.
  • Swimwear: With a cover-up for when they’re not in the pool area.
  • Casual Evenings: Comfortable dresses for girls and collared shirts with pants or shorts for boys.
  • Formal Nights: A cute dress for girls or a miniature suit for boys will make for adorable photo ops!

Pre-teens (Ages 7-12)

As children grow, they start developing their own sense of style, and this is a great age to begin understanding the nuances of the dress code.

  • Casual Outfits: Sundresses, skirts, polo shirts, and jeans are all suitable.
  • Activity Wear: If they’re participating in onboard activities, ensure they’re dressed comfortably, with sneakers if necessary.
  • Casual to Smart Casual: Girls can opt for dresses or skirts with nice tops, while boys can wear khakis with polo or button-down shirts.
  • Formal Nights: Girls can wear more elaborate dresses, and boys can don a suit or dress pants with a nice shirt.

Teens (Ages 13-17)

Teens often want to blend in with the adult crowd, and their dress code mirrors that of the grown-ups, albeit with a youthful twist.

  • Casual Wear: Think stylish yet comfortable – tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, or jeans.
  • Swimwear: Teens should follow the general pool guidelines, wearing proper swimwear with cover-ups.
  • Casual to Smart Casual: Dresses, skirts, or stylish pants for girls; and for boys, jeans or slacks with a trendy shirt.
  • Formal Nights: Teen girls often embrace the chance to dress up in gowns or cocktail dresses, while boys can opt for suits or dressier pants with a crisp shirt.

Additional Tips for Dressing Young Cruisers

  • Comfort First: Especially for younger children, make sure clothing isn’t itchy or too tight.
  • Pack Extras: Kids are prone to spills and accidents. It’s always good to have backup outfits.
  • Encourage Expression: Especially for teens, allow them to express their personal style while staying within the guidelines of the dress code on Royal Caribbean.

Whether your young ones are enjoying kids’ club activities, teens are socializing at the dedicated teen zones, or the entire family is gathering for a formal dinner, ensuring they’re dressed appropriately enhances the cruise experience for everyone.

With a blend of comfort and style, young cruisers can enjoy their Royal Caribbean adventure to the fullest.

Shore Excursions & Port Days

One of the most exciting aspects of cruising with Royal Caribbean is the chance to explore fascinating destinations during port calls.

From tropical beaches to historic towns, every port of call offers unique adventures.

While the dress code on Royal Caribbean primarily focuses on onboard attire, it’s essential to consider what to wear during shore excursions to ensure comfort, safety, and cultural respect.

Dressing for Different Destinations

The attire you choose largely depends on the type of destination and the activities you’ve planned.

Beach Destinations:

  • Swimwear: Wear under light clothing for a quick change. Remember to pack a beach cover-up.
  • Footwear: Sandals or flip-flops suitable for sandy shores. If you’re planning on water sports, consider water shoes.

Outdoor Adventures:

  • Activewear: Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal. If you’re hiking, opt for durable pants or shorts.
  • Footwear: Sturdy walking or hiking shoes, especially for terrains like forests or mountains.

City or Historic Sites:

  • Casual Tourist Wear: Comfortable shorts, jeans, or dresses work well. Remember, some religious or historic sites may require modest attire, covering shoulders and knees.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers.

Travel Scarf

Tips for Comfort, Style, and Cultural Respect

  • Research in Advance: Before you disembark, understand the cultural norms and expectations of the place you’re visiting. Some destinations might have specific dress codes for religious sites or local attractions.
  • Layering: Weather can be unpredictable. Wearing layers allows you to adjust to changing conditions, be it a sudden downpour or an unexpected chill.
  • Backpack Essentials: Pack sunscreen, a hat, bottled water, and maybe an extra shirt or scarf. It’s always good to be prepared.
  • Local Dress Codes: In some destinations, particularly in the Middle East or parts of Asia, modest dressing is recommended. Carrying a lightweight scarf can be handy for women to drape over their shoulders or head if required.
  • Safety First: If you’re indulging in adventure sports or activities, ensure you’re dressed as per safety guidelines. This might mean closed shoes for zip-lining or appropriate swimwear for snorkeling.

Avoiding Tourist Faux Pas

  • Avoid Overly Casual Wear: Even if it’s sweltering, avoid walking around new cities in just swimwear or overly revealing clothes. It’s essential to respect local customs and norms.
  • Footwear Considerations: In many cultures, it’s customary to remove shoes when entering someone’s home or even certain businesses. Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off.

Exploring new destinations is an enriching experience, and dressing appropriately can enhance that experience.

While the dress code on Royal Caribbean provides guidelines for onboard attire, being mindful of what you wear ashore ensures you’re prepared for every adventure, respectful of local cultures, and comfortable throughout your journey.

What Not to Wear: Taboos & No-Nos

While the dress code on Royal Caribbean offers a range of options to ensure everyone feels their best, there are certain items and styles that are best left at home.

Being aware of these taboos ensures you’re always in line with the ship’s decorum and can avoid any awkward moments or gentle reminders from the crew.

Inappropriate Swimwear

Swimwear is for the Pool: Always remember to wear a cover-up or change into casual wear when moving away from the pool area. Dining venues, casinos, and other indoor areas aren’t places for bikinis or swim trunks.

Too Revealing: While swimsuits are a must-have for those pool days and beach excursions, overly skimpy or revealing options might not be suitable for a family-friendly cruise atmosphere.

Offensive Clothing

Graphics and Text: Avoid clothing that displays offensive language, explicit graphics, or anything that might be deemed inappropriate or inflammatory in a communal setting.

Footwear No-Nos

Pool Sandals in Dining Areas: Flip-flops and pool sandals are perfect for the pool deck, but they’re out of place in dining venues, especially in the evening.

Barefoot: Walking around barefoot, unless you’re at the pool or on your stateroom balcony, is a no-go. Always wear appropriate shoes to ensure your safety and hygiene.

Too Casual Evening Wear

Formal Nights: While you don’t need to be decked out in haute couture, avoid super casual clothing like tank tops, shorts, or baseball caps during formal evenings.

General No-Nos

Wrinkled or Dirty Clothes: Royal Caribbean offers laundry services, so there’s no reason to wear clothing that’s visibly dirty or overly wrinkled.

Hats in Indoor Dining Venues: While hats are perfect for sun protection during the day, it’s customary to remove them in indoor dining areas.

Quick Tips for Avoiding Dress Code Missteps

  • When in Doubt, Ask: If you’re unsure about an outfit, the ship’s crew or guest services will be more than happy to provide guidance.
  • Observation Helps: Especially on the first day, observe what fellow passengers are wearing. This can give you a sense of the general dress code norms onboard.

Dressing for a cruise is part of the fun, allowing you to showcase your style while embracing the ship’s ambiance.

While the dress code on Royal Caribbean is designed to ensure everyone feels comfortable and respected, being aware of these few taboos ensures a smooth sailing experience without any fashion faux pas.

Remember, it’s all about balancing personal style with communal consideration.

Layered Looks: If you have a day packed with various activities – say, a morning at the pool, followed by a specialty lunch and then a shore excursion – layering can be your best friend. Swimsuits under casual wear, topped with a light jacket or cardigan, can transition seamlessly.

Shoe Choices: Bring a pair of foldable flats or easy-to-slip-on shoes. These can be a lifesaver when transitioning between casual and formal settings.

Prepare for the Unexpected

Emergency Kit: Pack a small kit with safety pins, a sewing needle and thread, stain remover wipes, and double-sided tape. These can come in handy for unexpected wardrobe malfunctions.

Laundry Knowledge: Familiarize yourself with the ship’s laundry services. If you have an accidental spill or need a quick press, knowing where to go and the costs involved can save the day.

Frequently Overlooked Items

Appropriate Gym Wear: If you plan on using the fitness facilities, pack moisture-wicking workout clothes and proper athletic shoes.

Formal Shoes: Guests sometimes remember their formal wear but forget suitable shoes. Remember, a beautiful gown or sharp suit isn’t complete without the right footwear.

FAQs on Royal Caribbean Dress Code

2. What if I don’t want to dress up on formal nights? While formal nights are a cherished tradition for many, if you prefer a more relaxed evening, there are always casual dining options available where the dress code is more laid-back. You can enjoy your meal without feeling out of place.

3. Are there laundry services onboard in case I stain my formal wear? Absolutely! Royal Caribbean offers both laundry and dry cleaning services, so if you have an accidental spill or need a refresh, they’ve got you covered.

4. Is athletic wear acceptable outside the gym area? While athletic wear is perfect for workouts, it’s best to change into casual wear when you’re elsewhere on the ship, especially in dining venues.

5. I’ve heard about “Theme Nights.” Are these mandatory? Theme nights, like ’70s Disco Evening or White Party, are entirely optional. They’re designed to add a fun element to the cruise experience. While many guests enjoy participating, you’re not obligated to dress according to the theme.

6. Can I wear jeans in the main dining room? On casual evenings, clean and well-fitting jeans are acceptable in the main dining room. However, on smart casual or formal nights, it’s recommended to opt for slacks or dressier attire.

8. Are children held to the same dress code standards as adults? While children are encouraged to follow the dress code on Royal Caribbean, there’s some flexibility, especially for younger kids. The main aim is to ensure they’re comfortable, especially during formal events.

9. Do specialty restaurants have a stricter dress code? It varies. While some specialty restaurants maintain a smart casual or formal dress code, others might have a more relaxed atmosphere. Always check the specific dress guidelines of the restaurant when making a reservation.

Royal Caribbean has three primary dress codes: casual, smart casual, and formal, which apply to different venues, restaurants, and events on the ship.

During the daytime, the Royal Caribbean dress code consists of casual attire, with jeans, polo shirts, sundresses, and blouses.. Swimwear is best kept to the pool deck, and shorts are acceptable for breakfast and lunch.

As you transition into the evening, the dress code often shifts to smart casual or formal, depending on the ship’s schedule.

Adhering to these guidelines ensures a seamless experience as you navigate the various activities and dining options available on your Royal Caribbean cruise.

Royal Caribbean Dress Code Guidelines

When you’re on a Royal Caribbean cruise , it’s essential to dress appropriately for each venue and event.

Here is everything you need to know about the Royal Caribbean dress code to help you pack the proper attire for your cruise. You can also check the Royal Caribbean website for up-to-date information.

Royal Caribbean has a casual dress code for most daytime activities onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Whether cruising to the sun-soaked Bahamas, the majestic Alaskan landscapes, or other exciting destinations, Casual wear will keep you comfortable and relaxed as you enjoy your vacation.

During the day, feel free to dress comfortably as you explore the ship, relax on the pool deck, and participate in various activities.

On the Pool Deck, your go-to clothing should include swimwear, such as swimsuits or trunks, and a cover-up when needed. Don’t forget to pack some reef-safe sunscreen and a good pair of flip-flops, as the pool area and other outdoor spaces can have hot and slippery surfaces.

In the ships’ common areas, casual attire is also encouraged. You can opt for t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, skirts, casual dresses, or sundresses. Pair these with comfortable shoes, like sandals or sneakers, so you can comfortably explore the cruise ship.

Packaging a mix of clothing suitable for the varying weather conditions you may encounter on your cruise vacation is always a good idea.

The dress code may be slightly more elevated for evening events, dinners, or themed nights, leaning towards smart casual or formal wear. You can still attend many events and activities in casual clothing, but you might not be allowed in specific restaurants or venues.

Smart Casual

A man and a woman on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship following the Smart Casual dress code

Most evenings on a Royal Caribbean cruise have a “smart casual” dress code. In a smart casual setting, you will be expected to take your attire up a notch from your casual daywear but still maintain a relaxed and comfortable look.

  • Men: Typical dinner wear includes nice jeans or slacks and a collared shirt, like a polo or a button-up. You can add a light blazer or sports jacket for added flair.
  • Women: Sundresses, skirts, or pants paired with a blouse or stylish top. Don’t be afraid to choose a slightly dressier piece, but remember to keep it comfortable and vacation-friendly. Alternatively, you could opt for a tailored jumpsuit or culotte, which are both stylish and versatile options.

As you put together your smart casual outfits, consider fashionable yet functional footwear.

Women can choose from stylish flats, sandals, or low heels, while men should opt for loafers, boat shoes, or dressy sneakers. These choices will allow you to feel comfortable while also looking polished.

Remember that the smart casual dress code is designed to provide a balance between dressy and relaxed attire. Ensure that you pack appropriate clothing items to adhere to this dress code during your Royal Caribbean cruise, and your evenings onboard will be both fashionable and enjoyable.

Formal Night

Every Royal Caribbean cruise has 1-3 formal nights, depending on the length of your sailing.

Shorter sailings (3- to 5-night cruises) typically have one formal night, while longer sailings (6+ nights) have two formal nights. If your cruise is 11 nights or longer, you could have up to 3 Formal Nights.

Royal Caribbean’s formal night dress code only applies to the main dining room.

Royal Caribbean’s dress code asks guests to bring their “best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns.”

In our experience, the dress code isn’t that strict.

A dress shirt and slacks are a common choice for men, while women often opt for a cocktail dress.

I’ve seen several passengers wear jeans to the main dining room on a formal night. But it’s usually paired with a dress shirt and a blazer.

But any less, you likely won’t be allowed to eat in the main dining room.

Of course, you don’t need to dress up for a formal night. But if you don’t adhere to the dress code, you won’t be allowed to eat in the main dining room.

You can eat at the Windjammer Cafe or specialty restaurants instead.

Here are some tips for what to wear on a Formal Night:

  • Men: A black-tie look is appreciated but not mandatory. Aim for a suit and tie or a tuxedo if you prefer. A dress shirt and dress pants are usually acceptable.
  • Women: You can wear a cocktail dress, evening gown, or an elegant pantsuit.

What to Wear on Shore Excursions and Port Days

When preparing for your cruise, it’s important to consider the clothing you’ll wear on shore excursions. It is essential to pack appropriate clothing based on the destination and activity.

Since dress codes vary depending on the port or venue visited, reviewing the tour description for specific guidelines is a good idea.

For comfort and convenience during shore excursions, casual, lightweight clothing is recommended. When going on beach outings, you can wear a sundress, romper, shorts, t-shirts, or swimsuit cover-up over your bathing suit.

If you plan to use the pools, hot tubs, or waterslides during your excursion, wearing a bathing suit under your clothes will make it easier to enjoy these activities.

Most importantly, ensure you bring comfortable walking shoes for port days. You’ll be doing a lot more walking than you might anticipate.

Dining Dress Codes

Main dining room.

For the main dining room on Royal Caribbean cruises, the dress code depends on the length of your cruise.

Most nights in the main dining room consist of a smart casual dress code. There will be 1-3 formal nights depending on the length of your cruise.

Whether it’s a smart casual or formal night, the following clothing items are not allowed in the main dining room:

  • Bathing suits

Specialty Dining Venues

In specialty dining venues, the dress code generally remains smart casual, with slacks, polos, dresses, and blouses being appropriate.

However, some specialty restaurants might enforce a more formal dress code, so it’s advised to review the specific dining venue’s guidelines before making a reservation. Remember that casual shoes are acceptable, but flip-flops, beachwear, and bare feet are not.

The dress code in specialty restaurants remains the same on formal nights. So if you don’t plan to bring formal wear, a specialty restaurant is a good alternative.

Windjammer Buffet

The Windjammer buffet has a casual dress code at all times of the day. It is a perfect dining option for those who want to dine without stressing about formal clothing.

Jeans, polos, casual dresses, rompers, and other laid-back attire are appropriate here. Shoes must be worn, and swimwear is not allowed, so cover up appropriately when dining.

How Strict Is Royal Caribbean’s Dress Code?

In our experience, Royal Caribbean’s dress code is not that strict. It’s more a suggestion than a hard rule, but you should follow the general spirit of the dress code to avoid issues entering the main dining room.

When I first sailed on Royal Caribbean in 2007, crew members strictly enforced the dress code.

I remember my dad getting denied entry to the main dining room because of the shorts he was wearing. Then again, the next day, because of his sandals.

On my last few Royal Caribbean cruises, I’ve noticed many passengers skirting the lines of the dress code.

You shouldn’t expect to wear shorts in the main dining room on a formal night. But there is a little give in the rules.

Packing for Embarkation Day

Ensure you pack a change of clothes or bathing suit in your carry-on bag during embarkation day. You may not have access to your luggage for several hours.

Packing a change of clothes in your carry-on means you can take a swim in the pool or change your clothes before dinner.

What Should I Wear on a Cruise? A Guide to Cruise Line Dress Codes

royal caribbean cruise dress code

Cruise line dress codes are the subject of countless questions. What exactly is your cruise's casual dress code? And what exactly does your cruise line consider formal enough for your formal night dress code? Few issues create as much confusion among cruisers as what they are allowed to wear onboard, especially the when and where of it all.

From a clean T-shirt and jeans to a jacket and tie, cruise line dress codes run the gamut from hyper casual to elegant (and don't forget Hawaiian shirt night, of course). For example: You may be surprised to learn that high-end Viking Ocean Cruises dress code is closer to Norwegian Cruises' dress code than to Seabourn's. Or that the Royal Caribbean dress code may be enforced differently from ship to ship.

If you're wondering what you should wear on a cruise, especially at night, here's how each major cruise line would like you to dress. Once you've made it onboard, it's important to know that most cruise lines reiterate the dress codes for specific times and venues in each day's newsletter.

On This Page

Azamara cruises dress code: more casual than you might think, carnival's dress code: it's all about the fun, celebrity cruises dress code: "chic" is the key word, costa cruises dress code: laid-back, but prepare for theme nights, cunard dress code: there will be balls and galas, disney cruise line dress code: making dress-up nights fun, msc dress code: formal and casual get equal billing, norwegian cruises dress code: it's freestyle, so just do you, oceania cruises dress code: quite casual for a luxury line, paul gauguin cruises dress code: a bit dressier, but be ready for polynesian night, princess cruises dress code: the longer the cruise, the more you dress to impress, regent seven seas dress code: upscale all the time, royal caribbean dress code: a style for everyone, seabourn cruise line dress code: elegant casual rules the ships at night, silversea cruises dress code: high-end, but with options, windstar cruises dress code: breezy and casual all the way, viking ocean cruises dress code: formalwear-free comfort every day, virgin cruises dress code (virgin voyages): whatever you like (within reason, of course).

Azamara Cruises ' dress code is resort casual. Acceptable attire includes sportswear, collared shirts, pants and jackets (if desired, but not required) for men and sportswear, casual dresses, or skirts and pants with blouses or knit tops for women. Regular, but not torn or distressed jeans, are fine.

No bare feet, tank tops, caps, bathing suits or shorts are allowed in the dining room or specialty restaurants. In the casual Windows Cafe buffet, the only requirements are footwear and a cover-up or shirt. Though not part of the official Azamara dress code, conservative clothing for port activities that involve museums, restaurants, and religious sites is recommended.

Number of Azamara Cruises Formal Nights: There are no official formal nights on Azamara Cruises. The line says, "Formal eveningwear is not expected nor required. If you prefer to dress more formally, you are welcome to do so."

Nightly Casual Option on Azamara Cruises: All restaurants are resort casual in Azamara's fleet, but Windows Cafe (the buffet) allows for an even more relaxed option.

Carnival's dress code for evening is typically cruise casual, but on one or two nights during the voyage cruise elegant eveningwear is suggested. On cruise casual nights, the line recommends slacks, khakis, jeans, long dress shorts and collared sport shirts for men, and casual dresses or skirts, pants, capri pants, dress shorts and jeans with blouses for women.

Cruise elegant on Carnival Cruises means dress slacks, dress shirts and optional sport coatsfor men and cocktail dresses, pantsuits and elegant skirts and blouses for women. On elegant nights, Carnival's dress code leans a bit more formal. You'll see suits and ties, tuxedos or evening gowns, but don't have to go so formal yourself.

Shorts (including cutoff jeans), T-shirts, sportswear, flip-flops, bathing suits, caps and men's sleeveless shirts are never permitted in the main dining room or specialty restaurants during dinner.

Exactly how strict is Carnival's dress code? The answer is that it is far more likely to be enforced in specialty restaurants than in other venues. You may also find that the shorter the cruise, the less formal even formal night becomes onboard. Where the ship sails may also play a role in how passengers tend to dress. For example, the overall dress code on Carnival Legend sailing a Canada/New England itinerary is more likely to be dressier than a three-day getaway cruise from Sydney on Carnival Splendor. Similarly, casual clothing is the norm onboard Carnival Freedom and Carnival Pride on shorter sailings to the Bahamas or Caribbean, but the gowns become more prevalent when both of these ships do longer sailings through the Panama Canal.

Number of Carnival Cruise Formal Nights: Carnival hosts two elegant nights for cruise lasting six nights or longer. There's one on shorter cruises.

Nightly Casual Option on Carnival Cruise: For those not wanting to dress up on their Carnival cruise, the Lido Restaurant is open nightly and maintains a casual dress code.

On most nights, Celebrity's dinner dress code is smart casual, meaning polo shirts and slacks for men and skirts or pants with blouses (or casual dresses). Jeans are also acceptable attire. If you're still struggling, think office casual.

The so-called evening chic dress code on Celebrity Cruises matches the line's newest Edge Class ships, Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex . Suggested attire on these nights is dressier, and formalwear (including jackets and ties for men) is welcomed but not required. This might include pants with a dress shirt or sweater for men -- with an optional sports coat or blazer -- or cocktail dresses or skirts or pants with an elegant top for women.

T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, tank tops, caps and pool wear are not allowed in the main or specialty restaurants at any time. Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed during evening hours. Even if you're sailing on Celebrity's slightly older ships, dress codes on ships like Celebrity Silhouette , Celebrity Equinox , or Celebrity Eclipse are still a bit classier than on Carnival or Royal Caribbean .

Number of Celebrity Cruises Formal Nights: There are no official formal nights on Celebrity Cruises, but cruises of six nights or less have one evening chic night, while those of seven nights or longer have two.

Nightly Casual Option on Celebrity Cruises: Casual attire is always acceptable at the Lido deck buffet or poolside snack bar.

The dress code onboard Costa Cruise Line 's ships is overall casual. Most nights are informal, with resort wear appropriate. A jacket is not required for men.

On formal nights, men might wear suits, while women can don cocktail dresses, though elegant resort wear is also acceptable attire. Costa also also hosts various special theme nights Those may include a white night, when passengers are requested to wear all-white clothing, a masquerade party at which masks are encouraged, as well as an Italian-themed evening (yes, you'll want to wear red, white and green clothing).

In restaurants, the cruise line asks passengers to not wear beach attire such as shorts, sarongs or flip-flops.

Number of Costa Cruises Formal Nights: On Costa sailings of six nights or less, there is one formal night on the sailing. Two formal nights are standard on seven-night sailings.

Nightly Casual Option on Costa Cruises: For diners wishing for an even more relaxed vibe, a nightly buffet is offered, where casual attire rules.

Come evenings, the Cunard dress code is smart attire on Queen Mary 2 , Queen Elizabeth , and Queen Victoria . These dress code goes into effect in the evenings. Semiformal smart attire includes slacks, shirts with ties or open collars, crewneck sweaters and jackets or blazers for men, and dresses, skirts and blouses or pantsuits for women.

Gala evenings on Cunard are truly formal and often themed, from the traditional Black-and-White Ball and Masquerade Ball, to a Roaring Twenties Ball and a hat-focused Ascot Ball. Formal attire means tuxedos, dinner jackets or formal dark suits for men and evening or cocktail dresses for women. (Who wouldn't want to dress up for a ball on the QM2?)

Number of Cunard Formal Nights: A typical seven-night Cunard cruise features two or three Gala evenings.

Nightly Casual Option on Cunard: Casual clothing is permitted each evening in select Cunard venues, including Kings Court, Lido Buffet, Golden Lion, the casino, Carinthia Lounge, Winter Garden, Garden Lounge, Yacht Club and G32. Even in these venues, no worn-out clothing, shorts, casual sandals or tank tops are permitted. Jeans are acceptable.

The Disney dress code is cruise casual during the day includes casual attire like shorts and T-shirts, but prohibiting tank tops and swimwear.

Dress-up nights are found on three- and four-night Disney cruises, with optional formal and semiformal nights on seven-night cruises. Dress-up means dress shirts, slacks and jackets for men and dresses or pantsuits for women. Semiformal entails suits or jackets for men and dresses or pantsuits for women; optional formal attire is not specified but is generally a more elegant version of semiformal wear. Most cruises also include one or more theme nights (like Pirate Night).

The Disney evening dress code applies to the main dining rooms at dinner. The dress code for Palo, an adults-only specialty restaurant, slacks (including jeans) and collared shirts or jackets for men and dresses, skirts or pantsuits for women are appropriate. Shorts, hats and flip-flops/tennis shoes are not permitted.

The dress code at Remy, the other adults-only specialty restaurant (only on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy ), is a bit dressier. Slacks and jackets are required for men (ties optional), and cocktail dresses, pantsuits or skirts with blouses for women. Jeans and women's capri pants are not acceptable here.

Number of Disney Cruise Formal Nights: Three- and four-night Disney cruises each feature one optional dress-up night. A seven-night cruise features one formal and one semiformal night.

Nightly Casual Option on Disney Cruises: All of Disney's family dining venues are casual.

Casual wear is the way to go on MSC Cruises . That's the case almost all of the time, except for the formal evening gala dinners. On those nights, the main dining room requires men to wear suits or jackets and ties, and cocktail dresses for women. In the evenings, T-shirts and shorts are not permitted in the ships' public areas. No swimwear is allowed in the main dining rooms. Jeans are allowed on casual resort wear nights, as long as they aren't torn or ripped.

In addition, passengers who would like to participate in theme nights are encouraged (but not required) to dress according to a specific theme. Examples include the White Party, Gatsby Night or the '60s and '70s-themed Flower Glory Party.

While all of the 21 mega ships across the MSC fleet have a casual vibe, each ship has its own personality. MSC Seaside 's dress code, though similar on paper to the line's other ships, has specific rules for its array of unique evening venues. You may find slight differences between the dress codes on MSC Meraviglia , MSC Magnifica , or MSC Belissima , each according to their individual offerings.

Number of MSC Cruises Formal Nights: MSC hosts one formal night on four- to six-night cruises, two on seven- to nine-night cruises, three on 10- to 14-night cruises and four on cruises of 15 nights or longer.

Nightly Casual Option on MSC Cruises: The MSC buffets serve passengers seeking a more low-key dining experience.

Cruise casual is the dress code on Norwegian . That includes khakis, jeans, shorts and casual shirts for men and summer and casual dresses, skirts, regular or capri pants, shorts, jeans and tops for women. Swimwear is fine at the buffet and outdoor restaurants -- so long as you put on a cover-up and footwear.

For dinner in NCL's main dining room or more upscale specialty restaurants, collared shirts and pants or nice jeans are suggested for men (with closed-toe shoes). Slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts, and tops are standard for women. Tank tops for men, flip-flops, baseball caps and visors are not permitted in the main dining room or any of the specialty restaurants.

There are no official formal nights, but Norwegian's Night Out is the line's freestyle (and optional) version of a formal night. However, there is no associated dress code. Cruisers might also want to pack an all-white ensemble for the line's signature White Hot Party.

Number of NCL Formal Nights: Norwegian's Night Out is offered on sailings of three nights or more.

Nightly Casual Option on Norwegian Cruse Lines: It's all casual, though each Norwegian ship typically reserves one main dining room and one specialty restaurant for passengers who prefer to dress up slightly (Read: smart-casual attire).

Oceania 's dress code is simple and casual, which may come as a welcome surprise to those who know the line as a luxury option. Country club and resort-style attire are generally appropriate, like button-down shirts and slacks for men or dresses, nice pants or skirts and tops for women. In all evening dining venues, passengers are requested to adhere to a more elegant interpretation of country club casual dress code.

Jeans, shorts, T-shirts, baseball caps and tennis shoes should not be worn at dinner or in any public areas in the evenings (although caps are permitted in the Terrace Cafe buffet.) Tank tops and swimsuits are not appropriate attire for any of the onboard restaurants at any time. Uniformity across the fleet is a bit more likely on this small-ship upscale cruise line. In other words, Oceania Riviera 's dress code is likely enforced the same as Oceania Regatta 's dress code.

Number of Oceania Formal Nights: There are no formal nights on Oceania Cruises.

Nightly Casual Option: Oceania's dress code is more casual than most upscale lines, so evening casual wear is appropriate throughout the ship. Shorts and casual shirts are allowed in Terrace Cafe during the evening. Room service is always an option for the sweatpants and T-shirt crowd.

What Paul Gauguin Cruises calls elegant resort wear is essentially a country club casual dress code and is requested for most evenings. Men should wear slacks and collared shirts, while women should don dresses, skirts or slacks with blouses or sweaters.

The line requests that passengers do not dress in casual wear, such as shorts, T-shirts, jeans that are frayed or with holes, baseball caps, flip-flops and Crocs in the evenings in restaurants and lounges. Bathing suits are likewise not permitted in the ship's restaurants and lounges; shirts and shoes must be worn in all indoor public areas.

At the once-per-cruise Captain's Welcome Reception, some men choose to wear a jacket (though ties are not expected). There is also a Polynesian Night once every sailing, when passengers are encouraged to wear Polynesian-style attire, so pull out your tropical shirts and dresses.

Number of Paul Gaugin Cruises Formal Nights: There are no formal nights on Paul Gauguin cruises.

Nightly Casual Option on Paul Gauguin Cruises: Come evening time, it is country club casual in all public spaces and restaurants on Paul Gauguin ships.

Princess Cruise Line has formal and smart-casual nights. The dress code for formal nights on a Princess Cruise is tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits for men and evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant pantsuits for women. Smart-casual attire includes pants and open-neck shirts for men and skirts or dresses, slacks and sweaters for women.

In the dining rooms, items such as shorts, pool wear and baseball caps are not permitted; shoes must be worn at all times. Jeans are permitted as long as they aren't fraying and don't have holes.

Number of Princes Cruises Formal Nights: Five- to six-night cruises have one formal evening; seven- to 13-night cruises have two; 14- to 20-night cruises have three; 21- to 28-night cruises have four; and cruises of 29 nights or more have a minimum of five. Short voyages (four nights or less) have a dress-to-impress night -- not technically a formal night, but a notch above daywear.

Nightly Casual Option on Princess Cruises: Passengers wishing to avoid Princess' dressy evenings can head to the casual buffet for dinner.

The dress code on Regent Seven Seas ranges from casual to formal. Casual, resort-style wear is appropriate for daytime. But in the evenings, the dress code is almost always elegant casual, with the exception of the final evening of each cruise (which is casual). At night, men should wear slacks and collared shirts (sport jackets are optional and ties are not required); skirts or slacks paired with blouses or sweaters, pantsuits or dresses are acceptable for women.

Jeans, T-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes are not allowed in any public area in the evenings, apart from the pool area.

Longer cruises have optional formal or semiformal nights. On these evenings, passengers can either wear elegant casual attire or opt for a more formal look, such as gowns, cocktail dresses, dark suits or tuxedos.

Number of Regent Seven Seas Formal Nights: Regent Seven Seas voyages of 16 nights or longer have two or more formal or semiformal nights, but these are optional. Shorter cruises are always elegant casual.

Nightly Casual Option on Regent Seven Seas: The outdoor Pool Grill is the only public area onboard that does not have an evening dress code.

Royal Caribbean 's dinner dress code includes nights that are formal, smart-casual and casual. Formal attire includes suits and ties or tuxedos for men and cocktail dresses and evening gowns for women. Smart-casual attire includes collared shirts and slacks for men (jackets, sports coats and blazers are welcome) and dresses, skirts and blouses or pantsuits for women.

Casual attire includes jeans and collared shirts for men and sundresses or pants with blouses for women. No caps, tank tops or bathing suits are permitted in the main dining room or specialty restaurants, and footwear is always required. Shorts are not allowed during dinner. You should also prepare for a Hawaiian shirt night (or two).

As on other lines, you may find that the official dress code may be lightly enforced on some ships, often in relation to destination and even size of the ship. The larger the ship, the more casual options there are throughout the evening. On the relatively smaller ships like Serenade of the Seas or even Adventure of the Seas , the dress code is a bit more easy-to-spot as there's less room for everyone to spread out.

Number of Royal Caribbean Formal Nights: Three-, four- and five-night Royal Caribbean cruises have one formal night; cruises of six nights and longer typically have two formal nights. Chop's is also a more formal venue.

Nightly Casual Option on Royal Caribbean: The Windjammer Cafe buffet is the most laid-back choice for evening dining, though Royal Caribbean's specialty dining is also fairly laid back at venues like Jaime's Italian and Izumi.

The Seabourn dress code is typically casual resort-style attire. Shorts and jeans are acceptable in all public areas, including restaurants, during the day. However, swimsuits, cover-ups and gymwear should be limited to the pool, spa and fitness center and outer decks.

The dress code on most evenings is elegant casual, which matches the ambiance of the line's ships, from the 300-suite Seabourn Ovation to the slightly smaller ships like Seabourn Sojourn at 229 suites. Men may wear slacks with collared dress shirts or sweaters, but jackets are optional. Women should choose dresses, pantsuits or skirts or slacks with nice tops.

On formal nights, proper attire includes tuxedos, suits or slacks (jackets required) for men and evening gowns, cocktail dresses or dressy pantsuits for women. Jeans are welcome in all dining venues during the day, but they're not appropriate in any public venues for dinner or cocktail hour.

Number of Seabourn Formal Nights: There is one formal optional evening on cruises of up to 13 nights, two on 14- to 20-night cruises and three for cruises of 21 nights or more.

Nightly Casual Option on Seabourn: Formal attire is only expected in the main dining room. Elegant casual attire is acceptable in all other ship venues come evening time.

Evenings aboard Silversea ships rotate among casual, informal and formal dress codes. On casual nights, resort-style wear is requested -- open-neck shirts and slacks are appropriate for men, while women wear casual dresses, blouses and skirts or pants. Jeans and baseball caps are not allowed in the restaurants for dinner.

On informal nights, jackets (ties optional) for men are recommended, while women can opt for dresses or pantsuits. Tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits for men and gowns or cocktail dresses for women are suggested for formal nights. Note that formal nights are always optional on the line's weeklong sailings in the Baltic, Mediterranean and Alaska.

Number of Silversea Formal Nights: Silversea voyages of nine nights or fewer usually feature one formal night, while longer voyages usually have two or three.

Nightly Casual Option on Silversea Cruises: On formal nights, passengers dining in La Terrazza can dress in informal attire. (This option applies to Seishin and Stars aboard Silver Spirit .) Dining at the outdoor Grill is casual on all nights.

Windstar Cruises dinner dress code suggests a casual elegant approach -- slacks and collared shirts for men and sundresses, slacks and informal cocktail dresses for women. Shorts, jeans, flip-flops, hats and T-shirts are prohibited throughout the ship during the evening. As with other lines, cruises in tropical waters tend to make dressing down more acceptable, as do voyages on the line's sailing vessels. The dress codes on Wind Star , Wind Surf , and Wind Spirit , are definitely more relaxed than the dress codes on motor yachts Star Pride , Star Legend , and Star Breeze .

Number of Windstar Formal Nights: There are no formal nights on Windstar cruises.

Nightly Casual Option on Windstar: The same casual elegant dress code is in place in all dining venues aboard Windstar ships.

During the day, Viking 's dress code calls for casual and comfortable attire, including shorts and jeans. Swimsuits, shorts, cover-ups and exercise attire should be reserved for poolside, in the fitness center and on the sports deck.

For evenings, the recommended onboard dress is elegant casual for most ship venues. Suggested attire for men includes trousers and collared shirts (ties and jackets are optional but not required). For women, dresses, or skirts or slacks with sweaters or blouses are recommended. Jeans are not permitted in dining venues, apart from the World Cafe.

During Viking cruises to Alaska and Antarctica dress codes are likely to be even more relaxed as outdoor ondeck and onshore activities often take place well into the evenings. It's a bit of a challenge to bundle up for sky watching in fancy clothes.

Number of Viking Formal Nights: There are no formal nights aboard Viking ships.

Nightly Casual Option on Viking Cruises: Dinner in the Viking's World Cafe is comfortable and casual, with daytime dress deemed appropriate.

Virgin Voyages does not have a dress code. The line prides itself on passengers (who the line calls sailors) being who they want to be and dressing exactly as they like. Having said that, you may want to pack a few designer threads as most passengers make an effort, especially in the evenings. But note: It's trendy wear, not formal (i.e. no tuxedo or ball gowns required).

Still feeling confused? Take it from Virgin itself: "We always want all of our Sailors to feel comfortable. We encourage you to wear more than a bathing suit if you go to a restaurant and kindly consider shoes, but your style is your style. Who are we to judge?"

Number of Virgin Cruises Formal Nights: Virgin doesn't have formal nights. The line usually has one Scarlet Night per sailing, and all that means is that you are encouraged to wear red.

Nightly Casual Option on Virgin: There are two semi-formal restaurants on Virgin -- The Wake and the Test Kitchen -- where you may wish to put on a jacket or fancier shirt, but there are no fixed rules.

Is Royal Caribbean’s Dress Code as Strict as You Think? A Quick Guide

This post may contain affiliate links. if you click one, i may earn a commission at no cost to you. as an amazon associate, i earn from qualifying purchases..

Have you ever wondered if cruising with Royal Caribbean means packing a suitcase full of ball gowns and tuxedos? As a regular Royal Caribbean guest, I’m here to give you the lowdown on how strict, or lenient, the dress code really is.

Whether you’re wondering what to wear for formal nights , the main dining room or just generally around the ship, read on to find out what to pack and what you can leave behind.

The Royal Caribbean dress code is relatively relaxed. While there are formal and smart casual attire guidelines in the main dining rooms, these are not strictly enforced around the ship.

Most venues on the ship offer a more laid-back dress code, allowing guests to choose from a range of dining options if they prefer not to dress up. Overall, the emphasis is on guest comfort while maintaining a sense of occasion where appropriate.

Formal Night Dress Code

Formal nights on a Royal Caribbean cruise are a chance to get a bit dressed up, although the guidelines aren’t too strict. For men, wearing a collared shirt and smart trousers will suffice. Women can choose from a range of options like dresses or a smart blouse and trouser combination. If you’re wondering what exactly to wear or want more details, you can find out more about Royal Caribbean’s formal night here .

Men need to wear a shirt with a collar and smart trousers, while women have a range of options from smart dresses to trousers with a blouse. You don’t have to go all out with a tuxedo or evening gown, but some people do enjoy dressing up a bit more.

The whole idea is to have a bit of fun while looking nice. There are photographers around to take photos, so you can remember how great you looked.

Main Dining Room Dress Code

The dress code in the main dining room varies according to the night’s theme, be it casual, smart casual, or formal. On casual nights, it’s important to note that shorts, tank tops, swimwear, and flip-flops are not permissible attire for dinner. The final night of the cruise is often a casual night, accommodating guests who’ve likely started packing away their more formal clothing.

While formal and smart casual nights do have specific dress codes in the main dining room, guests who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere have the option to dine in other venues, like the buffet, where the dress code is more lenient.

The main dining room on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, featuring a grand chandelier as the centerpiece, with multiple levels of balconied seating. The elegantly set tables and warm lighting create a luxurious dining experience.

Smart Casual Dress Code

On smart casual nights, the attire falls somewhere between the laid-back vibe of casual nights and the elevated elegance of formal nights. While you don’t have to pull out your tuxedo or evening gown, a collared shirt for men and a dress, blouse, and skirt or trousers for women are good choices. If you’re a fan of jeans, opting for a smart, dark-coloured pair is perfectly acceptable.

The timing of smart casual nights isn’t disclosed in advance, but you can easily find out on the Royal Caribbean app or the paper ‘Cruise Compass’ provided. If you’re on a short 3-4 night cruise, you generally won’t encounter a smart casual night. For cruises lasting 5-7 nights, expect one smart casual night, and anticipate two on cruises of 8-13 nights.

Any cruise over 14 nights will typically feature up to three smart casual nights. The flexibility of the dress code means you can transition effortlessly from one style to another, depending on the night’s theme.

Theme Night

If you’re on a Royal Caribbean cruise that lasts four nights or more, you might enjoy theme nights. These special nights make the trip more fun and let everyone dress up and participate in activities based on a certain theme.

Theme nights are just special evenings where the entertainment is built around a fun theme. You might get to enjoy an evening where everyone wears black and white or maybe a night where everyone dresses up like it’s the 1980s.

You won’t know about the theme nights until you’re actually on the ship. But once you’re on board, you can check the Cruise Compass. This is a daily guide that will tell you all about what’s happening, including any theme nights.

The themes can vary, but some you might see are:

  • Black and White Night : Everyone dresses in black and white.
  • Decades Night : Pick a decade, like the ’50s or ’80s and dress the part.
  • Country Western : Think cowboy boots and country music.
  • Masquerade Ball : A fancy evening where you can wear a mask.
  • Toga Parties : A fun night where you can wear a toga.

On one of my cruises, we had a Hawaiian night. We didn’t know about it before we left, but luckily we had some suitable clothes packed, just in case.

It’s a good idea to pack some clothes that you can easily adapt for a theme night. That way, you’re ready to join in, whatever the theme turns out to be. However, if it’s not your thing, there is no expectation to join in.

Packing a versatile range of clothing that can be adapted to fit a theme at short notice is a good idea. That way, you’ll be ready to join in the fun, no matter what the Cruise Compass has in store for you.

Casual Dress Code

Under the casual dress code on Royal Caribbean cruises, the atmosphere is laid-back and easygoing during the day. You’re welcome to wear whatever you find comfortable, be it shorts, jeans, or casual tops.

However, a couple of guidelines are in place for everyone’s comfort and safety. Shoes should be worn at all times, and while swimwear is the go-to choice for the pool deck, it’s not suitable for other areas of the ship. Just adhere to these simple rules, and you’ll be all set to enjoy your day.

A relaxed couple sits on the golden-lit steps inside the 'Oasis of the Seas' cruise ship, surrounded by the gleaming chrome and glass of the ship's modern interior, enjoying their casual vacation time.

Pool Deck Dress Code

When it comes to the pool deck dress code on Royal Caribbean cruises, the focus is on casual and comfortable. Swimwear is encouraged for swimming or sunbathing on the pool deck, but it’s not suitable for other parts of the ship. In addition to your swimwear, you can wear shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops to stay cool in the sun.

If you plan to venture away from the pool deck, such as the Windjammer Buffet, make sure to change into more appropriate clothing. If you turn up just to grab a quick bite to eat in swimwear, with a towel wrapped around you, you will be turned away. Make sure you put on some clothes to cover up.

Wrapping It Up

So, do you really need to pack a suitcase full of ball gowns and tuxedos for a Royal Caribbean cruise? As you’ve seen, the answer is a clear ‘no’. The dress code on Royal Caribbean cruises is more about making sure you’re comfortable while still giving you the chance to spruce up if you wish.

We’ve covered everything from what to wear on formal nights to the more relaxed attire for the pool deck and the unexpected fun of theme nights. The key takeaway is that you have options. Whether you want to go casual or dress to impress, you’ll find a place on the ship where you’ll fit right in.

What is the dress code onboard all ships?

When you’re onboard, the right look will vary by venue. But here are a few types of suggested attire:

Casual: You’re on holiday – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch

Smart Casual:

Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcomed

Formal: Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. There can be 1-3 formal nights during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.

What To Wear on a Royal Caribbean Cruise – Examples and Enforcement

Before I took my first Royal Caribbean cruise I was a little confused about the dress code. I knew that Royal Caribbean had “Formal nights” but had no idea what the dress code actually meant in practice.

Royal Caribbean does have “Formal nights” but the dress code is only upheld in the main dining rooms. There are plenty of other places to eat, so there is no need for you to ever dress up if you don’t want to.

In this post, you’ll find dress code guidelines for all parts of a Royal Caribbean cruise and we will look into whether the dress codes are actually enforced.

What Is The Dress Code on a Royal Caribbean Cruise?

The dress code for dinner on a Royal Caribbean cruise is either casual or formal depending on which night of the cruise it is. Guests will be told in advance about the dress codes that are in place.

There are no specific daytime dress codes on Royal Caribbean cruises.

Daytime Dress Code

What is the daytime dress code on royal caribbean cruises.

There isn’t a specific daytime dress code onboard Royal Caribbean cruises. Cruisers are able to wear whatever they feel comfortable in. Shorts, jeans, and casual tops are all acceptable.

This is pretty standard within the cruising industry, even the cruise lines with the strictest evening dress codes do not have dress codes during the day.

Royal Caribbean cruises do have a few restrictions such as: – Guests must be wearing shoes at all times. – Guests cannot wear swimming costumes/bathing suits around the ship.

Some cruise lines do have rules about not having any fancy dress/costume dress onboard – but Royal Caribbean doesn’t have this rule. Note: If you were wearing a t-shirt with an offensive slogan you probably would be asked to get changed – but that is about it.

What Is The Evening Dress  Code on Royal Caribbean Cruises?

Royal Caribbean cruises have three main dress codes that apply to the evenings onboard the cruise ship.

  • Formal nights – These have the most dress code restrictions
  • Smart Casual – These do have some dress code restrictions, but are less formal
  • Casual nights – Have almost no dress code – you must wear shoes, for example!

Compared to many other cruise lines, Royal Caribbean’s evening dress codes are incredibly relaxed.

Royal Caribbeans Evening Dress Codes – Formal Nights

Formal nights are a chance for you to wear your favourite dress or your tuxedo. The dress code isn’t particularly strict but some guests really do make an effort. I saw guests wearing amazing long gowns and having photos taken around the ship.

Professional photographers are located around the ship and will be more prevalent on formal nights.

Formal Nights onboard a Royal Caribbean Cruise

The dress code for formal nights is as follows:

Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns.  Royal Caribbean International

What Should Men and Women Wear on Royal Caribbean’s Formal Nights?

Men: The minimum requirement for men on formal nights is that men should wear a collared shirt and smart trousers. A tie isn’t necessary. Jeans/trainers would not be allowed on formal nights. Chinos would be acceptable as long as they are smart.

Women: Any smart dress or trousers/blouse combination would be acceptable. Don’t worry particularly about the length if you do decide to wear a dress or skirt. As long as the dress/skirt isn’t particularly short it would be acceptable. It isn’t a requirement to wear a full-length gown although many do.

We cover what children should wear later in this post…

White Nights

On my most recent cruise on Symphony of the Seas, they held a “White Night.” It was up to you if you wanted to take part or not. Probably about half of the passengers on board were dressed in white for the evening.

Many other cruise lines also have White Nights – Azamara and Celebrity come to mind. I usually pack a white dress “just in case.”

Cruise Dress Examples – (Everything I Wear Onboard: Emma Cruises)

How Many Formal Nights Are There on a Royal Caribbean Cruise?

Royal Caribbean cruises between 3-5 nights have 1 formal night. Cruises 6-13 nights have 2 formal nights, and Royal Caribbean cruises over 14 nights have 3 formal nights.

  • Cruises Between 3-5 Nights: 1 Formal Night
  • Cruises Between 6-13 Nights: 2 Formal Nights
  • Cruises Over 14+ Nights: 3 Formal Nights

If you are cruising for 3-5 nights you’ll usually find the formal night on night two. Cruise lines very rarely have formal nights on the first night because not all guests will have their suitcases. When embarking on a cruise you’ll give your luggage to a porter and it’ll arrive later in your room. You usually have your suitcase within a couple of hours but on occasion may have to wait until early evening.

Royal Caribbean Formal Nights How Many and When

Royal Caribbean Evening Dress Code – Smart Casual Nights

Royal Caribbean cruises also have smart casual nights. I like to think of these as halfway between formal and casual nights. The clothes I wear are similar to that that I might wear to a restaurant at home.

Smart Casual Nights

The dress code for smart casual nights is as below:

Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcomed.  Royal Caribbean International

What Should Men and Women Wear on Royal Caribbean’s Smart Casual Nights?

Men: The dress code does mention collared shirts but these aren’t strictly necessary. You could probably get away with wearing a polo shirt on a smart casual night or a plain T-shirt with a nice blazer or jacket. As long as you are looking clean, presentable and like you’ve made a little bit of effort you’ll be fine.

Women:   Any dress/skirt or trousers/blouse combination would be suitable. I do always find it’s easier to dress to the dress code as a woman, it’s easy to dress up a simple outfit with jewellery or shoes. If you were wearing smart, dark-coloured jeans I think that this would be okay. Blue jeans probably would look out of place but a nice pair of black skinny jeans paired with boots or heels would be perfect!

Royal Caribbean Smart Casual Dress Code What To Wear

How Many Smart Casual Nights Are There on a Royal Caribbean Cruise?

On a Royal Caribbean cruise of between 3-4 nights, there are no smart casual nights. Cruises between 5-7 nights usually have 1 smart casual night. Cruises 8-13 nights in length usually have 2 smart casual nights with cruises over 14 nights having 3.

The maximum number of smart casual nights on any cruise is 3. Some short cruises won’t have any smart casual nights at all. If you are cruising on a cruise that is 3 or 4 nights in length you will just have one formal night and the rest will be casual.

Cruises Between 3-4 Nights: 0 Smart Casual Nights

Cruises between 5-7 nights: 1 smart casual night, cruises over 8-13 nights: 2 smart casual nights , cruises over 14+ nights: 3 smart casual nights .

Royal Caribbean doesn’t advertise before the day when the smart casual dress code will be in place. It is relatively easy to switch between casual and smart casual – so I don’t think this is a problem. You used to have a ‘cruise compass’ delivered to your cabin every evening. This is a little leaflet which will tell you everything that is going on the next day, the dress code for the next night will be included in the cruise compass.

Royal Caribbean no longer seem to do this as a matter of course on many ships. You can ask your room steward if you want a paper cruise compass, but most cruises now expect you to access all the information you need via the cruise line’s App.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to buy the cruise line’s expensive Wi-Fi to access this app. Find out more about cruise ship Apps, and what they can be used for here:

You Don’t Need to Pay For Wi-Fi To Use a Cruise Line App – Here’s Why

Royal Caribbean How Many Smart Casual Nights

Royal Caribbean’s Evening Dress Code – Casual Nights

Casual nights are the most relaxed nights that you’ll find on any Royal Caribbean cruise. That said, there are still some things that you cannot wear. The first night of every cruise will be a casual night.

Royal Caribbean’s Casual Night Dress Codes

The dress code for casual nights is as below:

You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch. Royal Caribbean International

royal caribbean cruise dress code

At dinner, in the main dining room on a casual night, you cannot wear the following:

The last night of your cruise is also almost always a casual night. This is because guests have usually packed at this point and it is much easier to wear casual clothes.

On the last night of your cruise, you will leave your suitcase outside of your cabin in the corridor. This will be taken away by the crew and the next time you see it will be on land when you disembark.

Make sure you leave some clothes out to wear for the day you disembark! I have a specially designed disembarkation day T-shirt, so I never have to worry about what to wear on that last day.

Royal Caribbean Dress Codes For Children

Children are expected to adhere to the dress codes – although I doubt very much that they would be challenged unless they were wearing something really scruffy. Teenagers would be expected to dress in accordance with the dress codes.

Royal Caribbean Dress Code Formal Night Children Kids

For boys: Generally speaking, boys would probably be fine to wear a polo shirt and chinos on formal/smart casual nights. This, of course, does depend on the age of the child but if the child in question is under the age of 10 or so this would be fine.

For girls:  Any dress/skirt or smart trousers/top would be fine. The main thing is to look presentable and like an effort has been made.

Some families love the opportunity to dress up and I’ve seen small children wearing full tuxedos and bow ties – which is adorable. On casual nights anything goes for children.

Royal Caribbean Dress Code Casual Night Children Kids

What Are The Dress Codes in Royal Caribbean’s Speciality Dining Restaurants?

Most of Royal Caribbean’s speciality dining restaurants do not have strict dress codes.

They will often not adopt the ‘formal night’ dress code even on formal nights – which means that they can provide a great alternative for those not wanting to dress up for dinner.

royal caribbean cruise dress code

Many people do of course dress up to go to dinner at the specialty restaurants though. Guests will often book a speciality restaurant for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary.

Is The Dress Code Ship Wide on Royal Caribbean Cruises?

The dress code on Royal Caribbean cruises is only applied to the main dining room. Guests not wanting to take part in the dress codes are able to dine elsewhere. On some other cruise lines, for example, Cunard, the dress codes will apply ship-wide but this isn’t the case with Royal Caribbean.

Find out more about my trip with the formal British line Cunard in the video below. Dress codes were more strict than on any other cruise line I have sailed with:

Is The Dress Code on Royal Caribbean Cruises Enforced?

Only 4% of Royal Caribbean cruisers answered yes when asked if they felt that Royal Caribbean’s dress codes were enforced.

The dress codes onboard have become more relaxed in recent years and the degree of enforcement has decreased.

If you were wearing something completely ridiculous you might be turned away – but I’ve never seen anybody be turned away from a restaurant – or heard any stories of anybody having to go away and change.

I decided to ask the Royal Caribbean Cruises Facebook group this very question, the group has over 110k members. I think the data below speaks for itself.

Do Royal Caribbean Enforce The Dress Code Survey

A whopping 200 answered ‘no’ with only ’12’ answering yes! 63 people just answered with ‘who cares’ which suggests to me that the dress codes aren’t really respected.

Other Dress Codes on Royal Caribbean Cruises:

Is there a dress code for ice skating on a royal caribbean cruise.

When ice skating on a Royal Caribbean cruise all guests must wear long trousers/pants and socks. This dress code is strictly enforced for safety reasons.

If you don’t have both of these you will not be allowed to skate.

I actually have never been ice skating on a Royal Caribbean cruise although I did see two ice shows on the Symphony of the Seas, they were INCREDIBLE.

Royal Caribbean Excursion Dress Codes

The dress code for excursions may vary depending on what the excursion involves. You will be told if there is a specific dress code at the time of booking. You may be required to wear certain things like comfortable shoes/coats/jackets if your excursion is in any way physical.

Do You HAVE To Dress Up On a Royal Caribbean Cruise?

Guests don’t have to dress up at any point on a Royal Caribbean cruise if they don’t want to.

Royal Caribbean does have formal and smart casual nights where there is a dress code in the main dining room but cruisers are able to eat in the buffet or other dining venues without adhering to the dress code.

What to wear on a cruise: Cruise attire and cruise line dress codes

Ashley Kosciolek

Have you ever had that nightmare where you're at work, in school or giving an important presentation, and you look down to discover you're wearing only your underwear (or worse, nothing at all)? If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared.

Packing acceptable attire for a cruise is simple if you remember a few general rules. Here, I'll break down some safe options if you're unsure, and I'll give an overview of the cruise dress codes for each of the "big eight" cruise lines.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

What do people wear on a cruise?

royal caribbean cruise dress code

You can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing for sea days when you'll remain on board your ship. Although some lines will be more or less casual than that, it's a good baseline. But what is "resort casual"?

Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeve, button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will work well also.

On most ships, this clothing will also be acceptable at night in the main dining rooms. For extra-fee restaurants, you might choose to dress up a bit more -- perhaps collared shirts or long-sleeve button-downs for men and slacks with a blouse, or a dress, for women.

For formal nights, men will want to bring a collared, button-down shirt at the bare minimum. For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. Some men opt for suits or tuxes. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns.

Jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights, and cut-off shorts, baseball caps and flip-flops are banned at all times during dinner in the main dining rooms.

Related: 7 cruise ship packing mistakes you want to avoid at all costs

Another key piece of clothing to bring is a bathing suit. Whether you're headed to a warm-weather destination and plan to laze by the pool or on the beach, or you're visiting somewhere chilly but want to take advantage of your vessel's hot tubs, it's an item you won't want to forget. Note that cover-ups are required for entry at all restaurants and dining rooms, with the exception of walk-up, poolside window-service venues.

For shore excursions — particularly those in more rugged or active destinations that require a lot of walking — comfortable, casual clothing and sturdy footwear are a must. Bring layers for cold climates and moisture-wicking fabrics for places where it's warm or where you expect to work up a sweat.

Finally, check to see if your cruise line has any special theme nights planned. If so, you might want to pack an outfit for the white party or '80s night.

Carnival cruise dress code

royal caribbean cruise dress code

Carnival is one line where casual is the name of the game. Passengers will be just fine in jeans, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and bathing suits for their days on board or ashore.

At night, nice jeans and nice tops are perfect for eating in the main dining rooms.

On Carnival cruise formal nights, known as "cruise elegant" nights, cruisers wear everything from slacks with nice shirts to tuxes and ball gowns. However, most passengers stick to clothes that fall somewhere in the middle.

Voyages of six nights or longer will have two "cruise elegant" nights, while those five nights or shorter will see only one.

Celebrity Cruises dress code

Celebrity Cruises maintains a dress code that's best described as chic-casual. The demographic on board tends to be a bit more upscale than what you'll find on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. That means khaki shorts with nice button-downs are more common than jean shorts and tank tops, although you won't be out of place in the latter.

For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room. Anything from unripped jeans to dress pants with nice blouses or button-downs is acceptable.

Are there formal nights on Celebrity cruises? Yes, there's one on every sailing of six nights or fewer and two on voyages of a week or more, but they have a different name. "Evening chic" nights encourage passengers to go all out with tuxes and evening gowns. However, most men choose slacks with collared or button-down shirts and jackets, sans ties. Most women choose slacks and nice blouses, sundresses or party dresses.

Disney Cruise Line dress code

royal caribbean cruise dress code

Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with children, and children like to be comfortable. With that in mind, just about anything goes in terms of dress on The Mouse's ships, which tend toward casual in spite of their stellar service and high price point.

It's not uncommon to see jeans, shorts, T-shirts or bathing suits during the day. Unlike most other lines, the same goes at dinnertime, with jeans and T-shirts just as common as dressier attire like slacks and button-downs.

Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages. For those, DCL suggests that men avoid jeans and wear jackets. Women should go with dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

Some of Disney Cruise Line's added-fee restaurants, such as Remy — one of the most expensive alternative eateries at sea — require jackets for men and don't allow jeans.

Each Disney sailing features a Pirate Night; cruisers wishing to participate should pack their best swashbuckling gear. As is standard at Disney parks, you're also likely to see large numbers of costumes and mouse ears at all hours of the day.

Holland America Line dress code

Although the dress code on Holland America Line ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed. Most passengers tend toward resort wear or, at the bare minimum, nice jeans with pressed T-shirts.

The casual dress code carries through to dinner, but HAL cruisers can often be found dressing up a bit more — collared shirts or button-downs (sometimes with jackets) and slacks for men and slacks with nice tops or dresses for women.

As for Holland America formal nights, on sailings shorter than a week, there will be one "gala night," where travelers don evening or ball gowns, suits or tuxedos. Voyages of eight to 13 nights will see two gala nights, while any cruises of two weeks or longer will have three chances to dress to the nines.

MSC Cruises dress code

royal caribbean cruise dress code

What to wear on MSC cruises largely depends on the crowd with whom you're sailing. On Europe cruises, your fellow passengers are likely to dress up more often — even during the day — with skimpy resort wear and designer bathing suits gracing the pool deck as far as the eye can see. On those voyages, dinner is an even more fancy affair, with elegance as the norm. Expect to see glittering dresses and stylish pants and button-downs with dress shoes, even when it's not formal night.

On cruises that depart from the U.S., expect a more casual vibe, with jeans, T-shirts and bathing suits ruling the day. At night, you'll be fine with nice jeans and a collared shirt or a sundress, although you might want to dress up a bit more to match the ship's ambiance.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Are there formal nights on MSC cruises? Absolutely. They're called "gala dinners," and they appear at least once per voyage, but the number can vary by itinerary. The dress code is strict, with the buffet the only place that will allow T-shirts and shorts. You'll fit in best in a ball gown, cocktail dress, suit or tuxedo.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

Norwegian prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort.

The only exception is at dinner, when a smart casual vibe encourages travelers to avoid torn clothes or outfits that are suggestive or skimpy.

In a nod to Norwegian's laid-back style, NCL formal nights — dubbed "Dress Up or Not" nights — provide a chance for you to doll up. However, it's not required, and you won't be turned away from the main dining rooms if you choose not to participate. Passengers have been spotted wearing everything from jeans and T-shirts to ball gowns and tuxes, and all coexist in perfect harmony.

Princess Cruises dress code

royal caribbean cruise dress code

Princess ' casual daytime mindset means you can wear the same types of clothing on board as you would during a day ashore — activewear, beachwear and jeans or T-shirts are totally fine.

Princess cruise formal nights are special because the line is one of the few industry holdouts in that it still has an official formal night. Its passengers enjoy a more traditional cruise experience, and they relish the romantic vibe that a formal night can provide. With that in mind, the line doesn't mention super-fancy garb like ball gowns or tuxes; instead, it advises suits or slacks with jackets for men and cocktail dresses or pantsuits for the ladies.

On voyages of less than a week, passengers should plan for one formal night, while sailings of a week to 13 days will have two, and cruises two weeks or longer will have three.

All other nights are listed as "smart casual," which means sundresses or pants with flowy tops for women and nice jeans or slacks with collared shirts for men will suffice.

Royal Caribbean dress code

As is the case with Carnival and Norwegian, Royal Caribbean is a casual line during the day. And, like Disney Cruise Line, it caters to a lot of families. Translation: Wear what allows you to have the most fun in the most comfort. Expect to see shorts or jeans with T-shirts or tank tops and bathing suits or beachwear almost exclusively during the daytime.

At night, you might want to put on something a little less comfortable, but it's certainly not required, unless it's a formal night. (Like Princess, Royal still has those.) What is confusing is that the line has three different dress codes, all of which are loosely enforced: casual, smart casual and formal. The ones that show up on your voyage will depend on the length of the cruise.

The only difference between the first two is that smart casual recommends pantsuits for ladies and jackets for the guys, but skirts or trousers with blouses or collared shirts are fine in both cases. Smart casual also strongly discourages jeans -- even nice ones.

Royal Caribbean formal nights have the highest expectations for passengers, urging them to put on their finest cocktail dresses, evening gowns, suits or tuxes. As with the line's smart casual dress code, jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights.

How Strict Is the Royal Caribbean Dress Code? (Updated for 2024)

Traveling always involves stress about what to pack. Did I bring enough socks? Is that dress too dressy? Adding cruise ship culture into the mix can make you doubt your decisions even more.

Cruises aren’t my preferred style of travel, but thankfully, my best friend is an avid cruiser and Royal Caribbean is her line of choice.

So, I asked her about how strict the dress code is when you sail Royal Caribbean. “Haha, oh, not at all,” she says. “There’s actually a big group of cruisers on the message boards who complain about how people dress.”

Like most areas of life, dress codes on cruise ships have gotten a little more casual over time. But, what does that mean in practical terms?

What Is the Royal Caribbean Dress Code?

Space_Cat/Shutterstock

According to their website, Royal Caribbean has three levels of suggested attire . These are suggestions and not a strict code.

The levels are:

  • Casual. Think sundresses, jeans, polo shirts and blouses. Shorts are fine in the dining room for breakfast and lunch. Keep the swimwear on the pool deck.
  • Smart Casual. This is a little more polished. Collared shirts, pantsuits, jackets, and blazers are the look at this level.
  • Formal. This is a black tie look. Tuxedos, cocktail dresses, evening gowns, and suits. This is your chance to go all out.

Is the Dress Code Strictly Enforced?

Royal Caribbean has relaxed their dress code a lot. The Formal Nights have been rebranded “Dress Your Best,” and they are strictly optional.

My friend has seen people in regular casual clothes even in the Main Dining Room on nights that are supposed to be dressy. “Just don’t walk in wearing a bikini, and you’ll be all right,” she says.

Are There Any Situations Where the Dress Code Is Dressier?

“The Chef’s Table is the only place they might actually care,” she says. The Chef’s Table is an intimate VIP setting. Typically, there are between 12 and 20 people at a seating.

This is high-end fine dining, and people’s attire is expected to match. This event is a fixed price extra, and reservations are required. The Chef de Cuisine personally attends the event, and leads guests through a five-course meal.

You might have scallop carpaccio with yuzu vinaigrette or a perfectly grilled king mackerel. Because this is a select experience, people who choose to attend typically choose to put on their finest clothing, too.

There Are Still Limits

No matter how laxly enforced the dress code is, there are still a few limits that you should observe. First, bare feet aren’t allowed in any of the dining venues. This goes for every spot from the casual buffet up to the Specialty Dining venues.

Tank tops are also a no-go in both the Main Dining Room and the Specialty Dining venues. While you may not be asked to leave, this restriction is mentioned in the cruise line’s FAQ.

The casino, also, requires that you wear shirts and shoes. If you want to wear your bathing suit, make sure to grab a cover-up before you go.

Dressing for Formal Nights

G-Stock Studio/Shutterstock

Part of the fun of a vacation is getting to do something that you wouldn’t normally do. How often do you get to wear a formal evening gown?

If you are looking for an excuse to get dressed to the nines , a cruise with formal nights is one opportunity. You can dress up, walk downstairs, then head back to your room to change after your meal.

You don’t even have to drive anywhere, just get on an elevator and you’re there. As far as what to wear, you can definitely get imaginative. If you wear male clothing and don’t want to wear a suit, some khakis or even dark-dyed jeans are fine.

Pair them with a collared shirt and maybe a sports jacket, and you are good to go. If you have a suit or a tux and want to wear them, I’m sure the more traditional folks on your ship will approve.

On a short three, four, or five-night cruise, there is typically one formal night. The number of formal nights tends to max out at three or four even on fifteen-night cruises.

Keeping It Casual

If you are worried about feeling out of place not dressing up on a formal night, it could be a good night to check out other options.

There are casual grab-and-go options at spots on the ship like El Loco Fresh, Café Promenade, Dog House, Windjammer, and Sorrento’s Pizza. You can also have room service sent to your room to enjoy in your pajamas if that is what you prefer.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’ve never cruised with Royal Caribbean, you probably have a few questions about what to pack. These are answers to some of the most common ones:

Is Royal Caribbean’s dress code enforced?

How strictly enforced the dress code is depends on the activity and where you are on the ship. If you want to go to the main dining room on formal nights, you’ll need to dress sharp. There is also a formal dress code when attending the Chef’s Table dining experience.

Are jeans allowed on Royal Caribbean?

Royal Caribbean keeps the dress code loose most of the time. You can wear jeans any time you are in “casual” mode. If a space or event has a “smart casual” suggested dress code, though, you should probably upgrade it to khakis or slacks.

Can you wear jeans on formal night on Royal Caribbean?

You probably won’t have any problem wearing jeans in the Main Dining Room on formal night. A darker color will look a bit more formal. Skip pairs with holes or rips in them. But, you are unlikely to be turned away for wearing any kind of jeans.

What is smart casual dress code?

This is one of the more difficult dress codes to master. What do they mean? Smart casual is a dress style that is less casual than formal but still looks clean and well put together. For men, this can mean a polo shirt and a crisp pair of jeans, with maybe a good jacket.

Women can wear casual dresses or soft, flowing pants, possibly paired with sandals or chunky heels.

So, How Strict Is Royal Caribbean’s Dress Code?

The dress code is not enforced on Royal Caribbean cruises. If you don’t feel like dressing to impress, you’ll still be able to attend most of the events and meals on the ship.

When it comes to dressing for a meal on a cruise, don’t overthink it. As long as you are a courteous guest, you are unlikely to have a problem for wearing jeans or picking a dress that isn’t strictly formal wear.

At the same time, if you feel an urge to dress up for your meals, definitely indulge! You are on vacation. Wear what makes you feel best.

When you look back at pictures from your trip, the best thing is seeing yourself having fun, experiencing new things and feeling good.

Your clothing on a cruise (or anywhere else) should be a source of comfort, fun, and celebration. Don’t worry too much about whether you meet the standards of formality, and wear what makes you happy.

So, with a mostly lax dress code and plenty of things to do, what are you waiting for — book your Royal Caribbean cruise today!

Royal caribbean dress code update.

Written by The CruiseExperts team . Posted in General

Learn about Royal Caribbean’s dress code update before packing for your next trip!

For this cruise line, you will want to be aware of their casual, smart casual and formal attire suggestions before you start packing. Here is a quick, updated overview of each:

  • Casual – Think jeans, polos, blouses and sundresses. In fact, Royal Caribbean’s dress code most recently dropped shorts from its list of casual attire. Shorts are still allowed however for breakfast and lunch.
  • Smart casual – A step up from “casual,” think dresses, skirts, pantsuits, blouses and collard shirts for this category.
  • Formal nights – Formal nights are always an exciting time aboard a cruise ship. It provides the perfect time to snap memorable photos (and have professional photos sho t onboard). For formal night, consider tuxedos, suits and ties, evening gowns and cocktail dresses.

So, if you have your ticket booked and are still wondering what to wear on a Royal Caribbean cruise , here are a few more tips:

1. Boarding the ship

Keep in mind when you first board the ship, you will not have your luggage with you. It will be dropped off at your stateroom, but this could take hours. Because you will not have your bags right away, bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, or proper dinner attire in your carry-on bag. You will want to start having fun as soon as you get on the ship, and you wouldn’t want the wrong attire to slow you down!

2. Making the most of excursions

These days, excursions details will typically include what type of attire is needed for the trip. It could range from bathing suits and sneakers to heavy jackets and gloves, depending on which part of the world you are traveling. Be sure to pack an extra pair of dry clothes that can be easily carried on your excursion, so you can travel back to the ship in comfort (and in dry clothes!).

3. Don’t skimp on shoes

Some excursions will not let you participate without the proper shoes so pack accordingly (you can typically review available excursions through your cruise line’s website before your trip commences).

4. Think wrinkle resistant

While you will have access to an ironing station aboard the ship if needed, the last thing you will probably want to do is waste precious vacation time ironing. This may be a great opportunity to invest in a few items of wrinkle-resistant clothing that allow you to pack-and-go!

Royal Caribbean packing list: What to pack for a cruise, Royal Caribbean style

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Whether you’re new to cruising or someone who’s sailed tons of times but hates the prep, packing for a cruise can be a daunting task. There are standard items — including duct tape — that should be a part of any solid cruise packing list .

But what if you want to drill down even further and pack items specific to your brand of choice? We’ve created this Royal Caribbean packing list to feature everything you need to sail on the line’s midsize and megaships in the islands and around the world. Here’s what to pack for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Royal Caribbean cruise packing list at a glance

  • Royal Caribbean International app

Activity-appropriate attire

  • Branded lanyard or luggage tags
  • Drinks and water bottle

Electronics accessories

Comfy clothes, flowrider board, theme party attire, what to pack for a royal caribbean cruise, the royal caribbean international app.

If you want your cruise with Royal Caribbean to be smooth sailing, download the Royal Caribbean International cruise line app on your cellphone. It will allow you to check in for your sailing in advance, so you’re ready to go on embarkation day. Just provide the required details, upload a photo, link a credit card and choose an embarkation time, and you’ll be able to breeze your way on board in a matter of minutes.

After you board and connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi , it will also allow you to check the daily activity schedule and dining times; message your fellow cruisers; make dining, shore excursion and show reservations; and view your onboard bill.

Even better, since the app is stored on your phone, which we’re sure you’re planning to pack, it doesn’t take up any additional space in your luggage.

A tote bag or small backpack

Whether you plan to be out and about all day in port or roaming the ship in search of your next activity, it helps to have a bag handy to carry things like sunscreen, books and your cellphone.

Given how large Royal Caribbean’s ships can be, you’ll be glad to have a bag so you don’t have to run back and forth to your cabin to grab items you forgot. On the largest Oasis-class vessels , it’s nearly a quarter-mile walk from bow to stern.

Royal Caribbean is known for innovative attractions you never thought you’d see on a cruise ship. They include carousels, skydiving simulators and bumper cars. If you plan to take part in these activities, make sure you’re dressed for success.

For example, onboard zip lines require closed-toe shoes, and you’ll need socks for the climbing shoes you’ll have to wear to scale your ship’s rock climbing wall. Bring long pants and socks if you’d like to lace up your ice skates at Studio B, the ice rink found on many of the line’s vessels.

You’ll want to pack a one-piece bathing suit or some sort of athletic attire if you’re a woman preparing to take on the FlowRider surf simulator . (A crew member told me people in bikinis have about a 50% chance of losing their tops when they fall into the spray.)

A branded lanyard or luggage tags

It’s a fact: Many cruisers wear lanyards around their neck to hold their cruise keycards. (It’s important not to lose the cards since they double as onboard charge cards and shipboard IDs.) Whether you’re going for fashion or function, you can find many styles and colors to meet your needs.

However, perhaps none is as appropriate for a Royal Caribbean voyage as a branded lanyard with the cruise line’s logo. Search Etsy for custom Crown and Anchor options to show your shipmates you’re loyal to Royal.

Another great way to show off your Royal Caribbean pride is with logo luggage tags for your bags. They’re both apropos and functional.

Drinks and a reusable water bottle

If you’re looking to save some money on drinks during your next sailing, note that you can bring two bottles of wine or sparkling wine per cabin. There will be a $15 corkage fee per bottle if you choose to enjoy your beverage outside your room, but it’s still cheaper than purchasing wine on board — even if you have a drink package.

Royal Caribbean also allows passengers to bring up to 12 cans, plastic bottles or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks onto its ships.

If you buy a drink package, you will receive a special branded travel tumbler for the soda machines on board. If you don’t buy a package, you’ll want to pack a reusable water bottle or travel mug that you can refill with your favorite beverage.

No one unplugs on cruises anymore; in fact, bringing a variety of tech accessories can actually enhance your cruise.

Start with a non-surge-protected power strip (ones with surge protectors will be confiscated) to increase the number of outlets available to charge your electronic devices in your cabin. These are especially helpful on older ships, which often lack charging outlets and USB ports .

Looking to capture some candids at the beach on Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, or snag the perfect family photo with the pool deck sunset as a backdrop? Toss a waterproof phone case, selfie stick or GoPro with a gimbal into your bag.

In keeping with the changing preferences of its clientele, Royal Caribbean has largely relaxed its dress code . That means beachwear (by the pools) and resort-casual clothing are the norm during the day. At night, you’ll see passengers in everything from jeans and T-shirts or sports jerseys to ball gowns and tuxedos — although the latter is becoming increasingly less common.

In fact, on my last weeklong cruise with Royal Caribbean, we had one formal night and one “dress to impress” night, neither of which was mandatory.

In that vein, pack comfy clothes appropriate for the weather in the destinations you’re visiting (think: wrinkle-resistant pants , and dresses and shirts made from cotton-polyester blends, which are difficult to wrinkle and fold up quite thin). Quick-dry fabrics are a great option in hot and humid destinations like the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Between the burgers, fries and onion rings from Johnny Rockets; greasy but delicious Sorrento’s pizza; and free Mexican fare at El Loco Fresh, you might find yourself experiencing indigestion or heartburn after indulging in comfort food on Royal Caribbean ships.

Toss a small bottle of antacid into your toiletry kit to help ward off any potential discomfort.

One of the most iconic aspects of many Royal Caribbean ships is the FlowRider — a free surf simulator that allows passengers to try their hand at boogie boarding and surfing.

You’ll sometimes see the more seasoned surfers bringing their own boards onto the ship when they embark. If you’re someone who has tried the FlowRider before and has their own board, why not make it part of your packing list?

Royal Caribbean is well known in the cruise world for its theme parties. You’ll find everything from ’70s and ’80s nights to Caribbean and cowboy themes, as well as a White Night and a club experience called Red, where you might want to dress accordingly.

Unfortunately, Royal Caribbean doesn’t list its theme nights before sailing, so pack a little something for each if you want to be prepared.
