Ryan Adams to Return to Australia in 2024, Five Years After Being Accused Of Sexual Abuse and Misconduct
By Music Feeds
Content: This article describes allegations of abuse and sexual misconduct
Ryan Adams has not performed live in Australia since May 2017. On that occasion, the North Carolina alt-country musician played in arena venues around the country, including Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion and Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena. Then, in February 2019, Adams was accused of abuse by more than half a dozen women, including ex-wife Mandy Moore , ex-girlfriend Phoebe Bridgers , and an underage fan.
Journalists Joe Coscarelli and Melena Ryzik detailed the allegations in a piece for the New York Times . Adams didn’t respond until five months later, at which point he opted to deny the allegations. “All the beauty in a life cannot be reduced to rubble for lies. This madness. My work was a map for the lost. Not a billboard,” he wrote in a tweet in July 2019.
It took a further 12 months before Adams showed any public contrition, which he did in a letter published in the lowbrow tabloid the Daily Mail . “All I can say is that I’m sorry. It’s that simple,” Adams wrote. “This period of isolation and reflection made me realize that I needed to make significant changes in my life.”
Adams insisted his apology was genuine, and not just an attempt to cast off negative press coverage. “To a lot of people this will just seem like the same empty bull***t apology that I’ve always used when I was called out, and all I can say is, this time it is different,” he said. “Having truly realized the harm that I’ve caused, it wrecked me, and I’m still reeling from the ripples of devastating effects that my actions triggered.
“There is no way to convince people that this time is truly different, but this is the albatross that I deserve to carry with me as a result of my actions.”
Moore – who was married to Adams from 2009 to 2016 – expressed bemusement at the public nature of the apology. “I find it curious that someone would make a public apology but not do it privately,” she said in an interview with TODAY . Karen Elson, another of Adams’ accusers, also confirmed Adams had not reached out to apologise.
Nevertheless, Adams soon rebooted his music career. He has released several albums since late 2020, including full-album redos of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska , Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks and Oasis’ (What’s the Story) Morning Glory . He resumed playing live in June 2021 and has conducted multiple tours of North America and Europe over the past 24 months.
He’ll return to Australia in January 2024, and the tour’s promoters, MJR Presents, seem confident Adams’ fanbase remains intact – the venues are similar in size to those on Adams’ previous visit, and MJR have booked shows in all mainland state capitals.
So, has the public forgiven Adams? And, more saliently, has Adams done enough to warrant a continued career in the public spotlight?

Firstly I will say I love Ryan Adams, but I was very disappointed in this show. The opening statement given before he came on made him look like a prima dona that would excuse him from failing. No flashing lights from cameras/phones....then the first song was accompanied by ....flashing stage lights!!!
As to the performance, I expected some subtlety, as he demonstrates in many of his beautiful lyrical songs... but was greeted with and onslaught of driving rock, a wall of sound with Adams sreaming like a Bruce Springsteen sound alike.....walked out before the end.

Ryan is good as usual
He did a very powerful concert, with strong electrical sound.
To be honest I prefer more acoustic tune but it's only a personal opinion and the concert was good anyway.
Corn Exchange has a high acoustics level sound but seats disposition is terrible and I really struggled to see the stage and not the back head of the person in front of me. Worse of that, temperature in the back and top places became very high (hot air go up) and many attendees went away before concert finished.
So, Ryan 4 stars out 5, Corn Exchange 2 stars out 5.
I've seen Ryan Adams play Brisbane either with the cardinals or solo. The Tivoli in my opinion has always been my favourite place to see him.
The music varied from the cardinal days (sweet illusions) to the more recent songs of Do you still love me...
He was more talkative this time round which was a real treat. Loved the improv Brisbane Gothic Girl and his story during my winding wheel.
I think my favourite songs that night were When the Stars go Blue and of course Wonderwall.
He played til midnight and whilst it was a work night, it was worth the tired eyes and sore head....
It was great to come from a gig just welling with conversation, smiles and a few vinos....

Music Review: Ryan Adams
Ryan Adams is an alt-country genius, the second coming of Gram Parsons or perhaps Bob Dylan for Generation X. This is the view held by most of the fans at the Perth Concert Hall on Saturday night, when the mop-haired 37-year-old kicked off his Australian tour with a gig for the Perth International Arts Festival.
However, for others - particularly those in the music media - Adams is not the messiah, he's just a naughty boy. Or, like Dylan, a grumpy one.
Years of on-stage tantrums and diva-esque ballyhoo, from dummy spits at early gigs when wise guys requested Bryan Adams' Summer of '69 to a spat with Neil Finn and Janis Ian after an awkward live performance for the BBC last October, have fed into the latter view that he's harder to work with than Kevin Rudd.
So it was an odd experience on Saturday evening to see Adams breaking up his morose break-up acoustic songs with amusing, if well-rehearsed, banter.
Get in front of tomorrow's news for FREE
Journalism for the curious Australian across politics, business, culture and opinion.
Before the former frontman of alt-country pioneers Whiskeytown even struck a note of opener Oh My Sweet Carolina, off 2000 solo debut Heartbreaker, he was cracking jokes. "I hope I can play enough songs tonight to make you feel incredibly depressed," Adams quipped as he plugged in one of his two multi-coloured acoustic guitars.
Some of the biggest ovations of the night went to the ditty prompted by a fan who sneezed violently and also for Mr Cat, a half-whispered piano number about an imagined conversation with his pet (and fellow Starship fan) back home.
These moments certainly leavened a show full of introspective ballads, such as Dirty Rain and Lucky Now off latest album, Ashes and Fire, as well as Please Do Not Let Me Go, from the thematically central 2004 album, Love is Hell.
While the self-deprecating moments lightened the mood, they also jarred against the overall tone of the material. "All right, so here's another song about my feelings," Adams drawled before playing another new one, Invisible Riverside.
The crowd lapped it up, along with highlights from sophomore solo album Gold, such as Firecracker and New York, New York.
Despite the fact Adams was decked out in denim and a faded black Dio T-shirt, there would be no rock'n'roll, let alone any metal. He was in acoustic balladeer mode, albeit shape-shifting into a comedian between songs.
American critic Robert Christgau is also a non-believer. "I asked for Gram Parsons, I got Billy Joel," he once wrote of the alt-country star. On Saturday night I expected Ryan Adams, I also got Jerry Seinfeld.
'It was an odd experience to see Adams breaking up his morose break-up acoustic songs with . . . well-rehearsed banter.'
