Seun Kuti is the youngest son of legendary Afrobeat godfather Fela Kuti. At the age of nine, Seun expressed a wish to sing to his father. A short while later Seun started performing with his father and the band, until his father’s untimely death in 1997. Seun, then only 14 years old, assumed the role as leader of the Egypt 80. Ever since, Seun has followed the political and social ethos of his father. Along the way, he began to add his own twist to the music, digging deep into various African traditions to reflect the continent's struggles and cultures. About three quarters of the current Egypt 80 line-up consists of musicians that not only played with Fela Kuti, but often were arrested and harassed alongside the founder of the Afrobeat movement. Seun Kuti has toured the world and released many albums.

Afrobeat Legend Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 announce European and North American Tour with 24 dates and counting!

Legendary Afrobeat artist and Kuti family scion SEUN KUTI & EGYPT 80 has an upcoming US and European tour, manager Annie Ohayon of Knitting Factory Management announced today. Seun and his Egypt 80 band kick off their tour in the UK on June 1 and are currently booked through September 23, at the new Format Festival in Bentonville, Arkansas, USA. They’re hitting stops at major festivals like Glastonbury and unique venues like the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix along the way—24 dates in all, with more European dates possible in October.

“I’m excited to return to touring after too long away,” Seun says. “My band Egypt 80 and I look forward to retaking the world stage, and hope as always that our music will help make the world a more generous, kinder and more livable place, not only to fans but to its underrepresented people.”

On tour, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 will be performing songs from his catalogue and his most recent album Black Times. Seun has also been rehearsing and recording several new songs he expects to perform on tour.

Seun’s taken time off the road but has remained creatively active. He first performed the song “When We Move,” a collaboration with Common and Black Thought—co-founder and MC of The Tonight Show house band The Roots—last June to a worldwide audience alongside an all-star roster of musicians for UN World Oceans Day. In that song, Seun continues to ask the difficult questions: “Would they feel the pain like we do? Would they hear a cry like we do?”

The trio then debuted a live performance of “When We Move,” on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show last August, which featured Seun's performance and dance footage from The New Afrika Shrine in Lagos intercut with live performances by Common, Black Thought and The Roots on stage at Rockefeller Center in New York.

His latest record, Black Times , received a Grammy nomination in 2018, and he joined Knitting Factory Management’s artist roster in March of 2021.

Today, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 —at full strength, still retaining three-quarters of the group that played, protested, and were arrested with his father— have a reputation for playing multi-hour shows as heavy on group improvisation as they are on composition.

Like his parents and grandparents, Seun is an activist on the frontlines – a revolutionary in every sense of the word. He has responded to our global moment of crisis in a burst of creativity. With his weekly radio show, his mythical gigs at The Shrine in Lagos, and a righteous social media presence, Seun is a towering figure in Nigeria. In “When We Move,” his recent collaboration with Common and Black Thought (from The Roots), he continues to ask the difficult questions: “Would they feel the pain like we do? Would they hear a cry like we do?”

Seun’s lyrics are set to rhythms born in Africa, which then circled the globe, returning to Nigeria where Fela reinvented them as Afrobeat. “I was raised in Afrobeat,” says Seun, who joined his father’s band at 9 and began fronting it at 14.

Like his father, Seun doesn’t just stand against corruption – he dances against it, sings against it, pressing onward with his family’s sacred musical mission: resisting oppression, uniting the people with rhythm. To grasp the depth of this dynasty one must look beyond Fela, to Seun’s grandfather, a composer of hymns in traditional Nigerian form. Seun’s grandmother was the first Secretary General of the International League of Women. When speaking of her Seun invokes Oya, the Storm Goddess of Wind and Lightning. His respect for feminine power is woven into his lyrics.

And now the torch of justice has been passed to Seun, Pro-Tem Chairman of Movement of the People, the political party launched by his father which Seun is resurrecting. Seun creates music to heal the violence that he sees between people and nature.

Son of celebrated Nigerian Afrobeat originator Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti has done more than carry on the musical tradition of his iconic father, expanding the mix of Yoruban folk music, jazz, and horn-driven funk to include contemporary influences while emerging as a self-assured artist possessed of deep passion and fearless conviction.  

He made his stage debut at nine and became the lead vocalist in his father’s Egypt 80 band at the age of 14 following the elder Kuti’s passing in 1997. Since then, Seun and Egypt 80 have crisscrossed the world, recording a series of socially conscious and infectiously grooving albums including the hard-hitting Robert Glasper-produced A Long Way to the Beginning in 2014 and 2018’s relentless and compelling Black Times with guest Carlos Santana. His newest, 2019’s Night Dreamer Direct-To-Disc Sessions , is a document of a remarkable band and leader in action, recorded with no overdubs and no second takes.

These performances by Egypt 80 are priceless to fans of African music, since many musicians in the current lineup played with Fela during his life, and though Fela Kuti never played material from his studio recordings live, Seun typically includes a cross-section of his father’s greatest work alongside his own incisive compositions.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — A Nigerian Afrobeat star facing trial on charges of assaulting a police officer will embark on a delayed concert tour after being released on bail, his manager said Wednesday.

Seun Kuti, who was in court on Wednesday, has concerts scheduled in more than a dozen countries but his departure had been on hold because of the trial, his manager Ayo Moses told The Associated Press.

The son of Nigerian musical icon and political agitator Fela Kuti, who himself was serially detained by Nigerian military regimes, Seun Kuti had been held for more than a week after he was caught allegedly assaulting a police officer in Nigeria’s economic hub of Lagos.

At Wednesday’s court hearing, the presiding judge ruled that it was the public prosecutor – not the police – that had the power to prosecute the musician. The judge then adjourned the case until a further hearing on July 3.

“He is on bail and as a responsible citizen, he will continue to enjoy his rights because he is presumed innocent,” Femi Falana, his lawyer, said after the hearing.

Viral videos appeared to show an agitated Kuti shouting and pushing the officer along a major road in Lagos last week. It is still not clear what caused the confrontation, though Kuti alleged the officer in question “tried to kill me and my family.”

While he was in detention, the police searched Kuti’s house, causing an uproar among some Nigerians and his lawyers. But Benjamin Hundeyin, a spokesperson for the Lagos police, defended the search as necessary and approved by the court.

“In the course of our investigation, we stumbled on certain suspicious things that needed to be proven/disproved beyond reasonable doubt,” Hundeyin said without providing further details.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an all star rock band that was formed in LA back in the eighties. The group is made up of Anthony Kiedis (vocalist), Flea (bassist), Chad Smith (drummer), and John Frusciante (guitarist).
