Expert Advice

diana

As you drive through the coffee region, you’ll see coffee plants as far as the eye can see. Colombians are the coffee experts – and for good reason! They are the 3rd largest producers of coffee beans and specialize in Arabica beans. They take these bragging rights very seriously. Each bean is handpicked and sorted to guarantee that the coffee they produce is of the utmost quality. And delivering a delicious, hot cup of coffee is exactly what they do. Drink it like a local and take it with no cream or sugar.

colombia expert advice 2

Amp up the adventure and cruise through Salento valley while standing in the back of a Willy (4x4 jeep). Locals use these jeeps because they handle the uneven mountainous terrain better than the average truck and there’s still a surplus of them left over from WWII. Feel the wind in your hair while you take in rolling hills covered in avocado and wax palm trees.

Travel with the experts for a carefully curated, value-packed discovery of the world's most iconic destinations. Our tours are bursting with must-see sights, rich experiences and quality inclusions, all at an unbeatable price. Bucket list dreams are ticked off on these all-encompassing journeys.

Day 1 Bogotá

Welcome to Bogotá! Upon arrival, you will have a private transfer from the airport to your hotel (just look for a sign with your name). Bogotá is a large, vibrant city known for its arts, gastronomy and culture. Be ready to absorb plenty of history and insight into Colombian culture over the next 10 days!

If you arrive a day early, why not go exploring? The old Candelaria Historic District is blessed with colonial houses, government buildings and the modern Bogotá to the north where you’ll find shops, restaurants and bars. The area of modern Bogotá was first populated by groups of indigenous people that migrated from Mesoamerica. Among these groups were the Muiscas that settled in what are now mainly the Departments  of Cundinamarca and Boyacá. With the arrival of the Spanish colonists, the area became a major settlement founded by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, and later capital of the Spanish provinces and the seat of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. With independence, Bogotá became the capital of Gran Colombia and later the capital of the Republic of Colombia.

Meet your tour leader and fellow travellers at 4pm at the hotel lobby for a meet and greet.

Day 2 Bogotá

After breakfast, we will visit the Gold and Botero museums, and explore the La Candelaria neighbourhood. The Gold Museum (Museo Del Oro), is a huge part of the tourism industry in Bogotá and attracts a million guests per year. There is a huge collection of pre-Columbian archaeological treasure: art, jewellery, medallions, currency, and more. The Botero Museum's modern art collection, together with the National Museum of Fine Arts of Buenos Aires, is one of the most important art collections in Latin America. The museum's namesake, Colombian artist Fernando Botero, contributed more than 200 pieces including 123 pieces of his own work.

For lunch, you’ll have the chance to try one of the most significant dishes in the country called ajiaco,  a thick soup made from three different kinds of potatoes, chicken, guasca leaves (a common Colombian herb) and half an ear of corn. Dinner tonight will be at your own leisure.

Day 3 Bogotá Pereira Salento

This morning at 8am we’ll meet our driver at the hotel lobby after checking out. Today’s destination is The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, around 90 minutes from Bogotá. Described as a ‘Jewel of Modern Architecture,’ this Roman Catholic church was built by miners within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 metres underground in a halite mountain near Zipaquirá. After our visit, we’ll head to lunch before boarding a flight to Pereira, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia. Upon arrival we’ll transfer to our hotel in Salento.

Day 4 Salento

After breakfast, meet your tour leader in the hotel lobby. This morning we’re driving to Salento, around an hour away, from here we’ll change vehicle to a Jeep Willys and continue onto Cocora Valley (approx. 30 minutes). At Cocora Valley, we’ll go out on a hike (it can be as long or short as you like). On the hike, look out for the famous wax palm trees or uindío wax palm,  the tallest palm trees in the world and a native to this land. Enjoy the views of the valley and if you are lucky, you might be able  to spot an Andean Condor, the largest flying bird in the world. After the hike, we’ll return to Salento to eat lunch, before learning  how to play tejo in town, a national sport where the goal is to throw a tejo, or weighted steel disc inside the bocin (a metal ring).

Day 5 Salento Medellín

After meeting the tour leader in the hotel lobby this morning, we’ll set off on a 90 minute drive to La  Romelia Orchid Farm, a family farm run by José and Marisa. They have dedicated more than half of their lives to the collection, study and conservation of orchids, among other plants. The tour is around 2.5 hours; we’ll walk the natural trails, tour the orchid nursery and bonsai gardens, and more. We’ll end the tour with a delicious vegetarian lunch, before continuing onto Medellín.

Day 6 Medellín

We’ll meet our tour leader at the lobby at 9am for a tour of Comuna 13. Once famous for being one of the most dangerous places in the world, Comuna 13 has undergone an incredible transformation over the past few decades and today is a flourishing barrio (neighbourhood). After exploring this barrio and its escalators, we’ll visit Plaza Botero and its 23 Fernando Botero statues, (legend has it that rubbing Botero’s statues will bring good luck—feel free to test the theory!) and the Museum of Antioquia which houses works by Medellín native Fernando Botero and Pedro Nel Gómez.

Day 7 Medellín Cartagena

Today explore the city at your leisure.  Alternatively you may wish to book an optional tour.    This evening we will head to the airport to catch a flight to Cartagena.

The densely populated neighbourhood of Moravia was once Medellín's municipal garbage dump with a mountain of open-air garbage surrounded by squatter settlements. Due to Colombia's armed conflict and the number of displaced refugees, more and more displaced people arrived and settled in the area. Today’s Moravia is considered the most populous barrio in Medellín. The neighbourhood is known for its strong community spirit and positive attitude of its people. Many local projects managed by the community have transformed the community into the epicentre of art, culture and entrepreneurship. Learn more about this neighbourhood from social and community leaders.

Includes: Transfers, snack, local guide and English Speaking guide.

Start Time: 9.00am  End Time: 12.00pm

Day 8 Cartagena

Located by the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena is a charming, walled city where Nobel Prize winner and author, Gabriel García Márquez found inspiration. At 9am, we’ll set off on a 3-4 hour tour of the city taking in San Felipe Fortress, a magnificent structure that was built by the Spaniards in 1536 to keep the city safe against pirates. We’ll learn about the city’s colourful history, see important buildings, squares, and churches.

Day 9 Cartagena

Today is at your leisure to further explore Cartagena.  Alternatively you may wish to book an optional tour to enjoy some beach time at a nearby island.

Spend the day catching up on some R&R at Isla Grande (a 60 minute boat ride from Cartagena), one of the 28 islands of the National Natural Park Corales del Rosario—explore the magical coral reefs, home to colourful fish and more. You’ll receive a welcome mocktail on arrival at the San Pedro de Majagua Hotel. A local lunch of coconut rice, fried plantain & salad will be served including an appetiser with a choice of beverages (water, juice, natural lemonade, local beer), typical Cartagena sweets, and Colombian coffee or tea.

Includes: Return shared boat ride (Cartagena – San Pedro de Majagua Hotel – Cartagena), pier tax, access to Sol and Buzo beaches, sun chairs & towel service.   Lunch is included.

Start Time: 7.45am End Time: 4.00pm

Day 10 Cartagena

Enjoy one last delicious breakfast this morning, before your Colombian adventure comes to an end.

We hope you’ve been inspired.

Check out: Check-out time is generally around 10am. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or alternatively please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time. If required, your tour leader can help you arrange a transfer to the airport.

Culture and customs.

Colombian culture tends to revolve around the Four F’s: Festivals, Food, Fun, and Family. While this bold and beautiful nation loves to party, it’s also a very traditional, family-centered society, with many Colombians choosing to live near their families and remain at home until marriage.

With most Colombians being Catholic, religion plays an important part in daily life, and visitors will be able to see this themselves while traveling through Colombia. Hundreds of churches and cathedrals populate the large cities, while smaller chapels are dotted throughout the villages and rural areas. Religious festivals like Easter and Christmas are celebrated with gusto – after quiet times of reverence come the massive street parties, parades, and feasts. A variety of cultural influences collide at these events - Spanish, African, and Caribbean customs and traditions have been brought to Colombia over the centuries and shaped its vibrant culture.

The hallmarks and customs of daily life vary from region to region, with Bogota’s upwardly mobile citizens enjoying bars, driving cars, and having access to a wide range of technology, cuisine, and media. Colombia’s rural dwellers (subsistence farmers, plantation workers, and tribal groups) live a more simple existence in rustic housing and without traffic or the stresses of modern life. What unifies most Colombians though, regardless of living conditions or class, is a fierce love of Colombia, respect for God, and loyalty to the family unit.

Geography and environment

Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia shares borders with   Venezuela ,   Brazil ,   Peru ,   Ecuador ,   and Panama, and is the only South American country to have a coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Home to a wide variety of natural environments and varying terrain, travelers can expect to see mountains give way to low-lying plains and tropical rainforests meet balmy beaches. Add sprawling metropolises, small farming communities, far-reaching plantations, fishing villages, and colonial-era towns, and you’ve got an ever-changing landscape at your fingertips.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Colombia has rich culinary traditions, quality fresh produce and loads of cosmopolitan bars, cafes, food stands and restaurants to visit. For a summary of what to eat in South America, check out   our in depth guide .

Things to try in Colombia

These popular thick corn tortillas can be found almost everywhere in Colombia. Baked or fried, with beef, cheese, pork, chicken or beans, they make the perfect breakfast or afternoon snack.

2. Bandeja Paisa

Originating from the Andean region of Colombia, this dish is a staple of most Colombian diets. Consisting of a plate of rice, beans, avocado, fried egg, chorizo and other meats, it’s a filling feast fit for a king!

3. Ajiaco Bogotano

This hearty chicken stew is a Bogota specialty. Packed with succulent chicken meat, corn, potatoes and herbs, it’s a tasty and satisfying budget meal.

4. Tropical fruit

Colombia is known for having some of the best fresh produce in the world. Bananas and plantains are among the best, and you’ll be able to find street vendors selling them fresh, fried and grilled. Fruit shakes are also widely available and offer travellers a chance to sample some exotic fruits that they may not have tried before.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Colombia was inhabited by Caribbean and Andean groups who lived in small communities based on organized agriculture. Spanish explorers were drawn to the land and fascinated by the proliferation of gold. The myth of El Dorado soon abounded, and the search for this land of gold soon became an obsession.

From the creation of Santa Marta in 1525, colonization spread rapidly throughout the rest of the country, leading to interest from neighboring countries that were also keen to exploit Colombia’s natural resources. Many Africans soon started to arrive as a part of the slave trade and provided a much-needed labor force for the colonizers. Life was tough for the slaves; however, African song, dance, and other afro-traditions helped to shape Colombian culture well into the future.

Recent history

Independence from Spain rose to the top of Colombia’s agenda after years of resentment. Simon Bolivar soon became a local hero, fighting for independence from the Spaniards. It took many years, but in 1819, Colombia was granted its freedom – Bolivar had fought his way into the minds and hearts of Colombia, where he is still revered.

However, this spirit of freedom was short-lived as Colombia descended into confrontation and civil war in the following years. Colombia seemed to be at the mercy of political opponents and guerrilla groups, weaving between periods of peace and extreme violence.

By the 1970s, Colombia had a new wave of criminal activity stemming from the lucrative cocaine trade. Pablo Escobar became one of the world’s most notorious (and wealthy) criminals by controlling most of the world’s drug trade. Colombia became a dangerous place to live (and travel in) during this period, yet has recently emerged victorious from these dark days. With vastly improved national security and a growing economy based on agriculture, textiles, and mineral mining, Colombia is welcoming back tourists with open arms.

Travelers might visit Colombia for the adrenaline sports, nature reserves, and beaches, however, retail therapy should also be included in that list, as Colombia’s shopping is surprisingly sensational.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States generally has strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Colombia

1. Jewelry, art and handicrafts

Some of the best artisans in South America live in Colombia. Choose from handcrafted gold jewelry, bright textile bags and scarves, and vibrant contemporary art available in galleries, markets, and boutiques all over the country.

2. Fashion and accessories

Colombia’s more cosmopolitan cities have enough fashion-forward boutiques and malls to keep most clothes-hounds happy. Medellin in particular is well known for being Colombia’s fashion capital and is a true hotspot in the Latin American fashion world.

3. Coffee beans

As one of the world’s largest producers of coffee beans, Colombia is a great place to pick up top-quality beans at lower prices than back home. Buying straight from the coffee regions ensures quality and freshness.

This vibrant town may have been founded centuries ago, but nowadays Popayan has a youthful spirit due to the local university that attracts thousands of young Colombians to the region. Home to many of Colombia’s most celebrated poets, composers, and painters, Popayan also has some of the most stirring Easter celebrations in the world.

Known locally as the ‘Capital of Heaven’, Cali’s museums and public art may dazzle you, but it’s the up-and-coming food and party scene that’s getting loads of attention. With modern restaurants serving international cuisine, local eateries offering traditional fare, lively salsa bars open until dawn, and a fair worth traveling for in late December, Cali shouldn’t be missed!

4. Barichara

Less of a city and more of a colonial town, the faded charm of rustic Barichara has been endearing travelers for centuries. Colored, whitewashed buildings with carved wooden doors and red roofs, quaint little churches, and hilly streets make Barichara the perfect place to linger for a few days of quiet downtime.

Embrace the charm of Baricahra on our 10 day Explore Colombia adventure.

Medellin Feria de las Flores (Festival of the Flower)

Occurring each August, this week-long ode to local flower farmers (Colombia is one of the leading producers of cut flowers in the world) culminates in a colorful and fragrant parade, where farmers march the streets carrying silletas (elaborate flower arrangements) on their back.

Feria de Cali (Cali Fair)

The salsa capital of Colombia ends each year the only way it knows how – with a five-day city-wide party beginning right after Christmas featuring parades, music, bullfighting, a beauty pageant, food, and of course, salsa dancing.

Pasto Carnaval de Negros y Blancos (Black and White Carnival)

Each January, the city of Pasto engages in an unusual two-day celebration of racial equality – locals and visitors party on the street and paint each other black for Blacks’ Day and throw white powder on each other for Whites’ Day.

Night of the Candles

Homes and cities across the country are lit up with candles and paper lanterns to mark the unofficial start of the Christmas season. Taking place on the eve of the Immaculate Conception (a Catholic celebration and national holiday in Colombia), it’s a night meant for socializing with friends and family.

When is the best time to visit Colombia?

There is always a good time to visit Colombia, as the seasons vary throughout the country. While the climate generally remains constant throughout the year, the temperature can change depending on where you are. In the far north, the climate is usually tropical, warm and humid, while central Colombia can get quite cool - Bogota is known for its mild temperatures, particularly at night.

The wet season is roughly from March to May and September to November, although this varies around the country. December to March is the peak travel period due to the dry conditions and holidays and festivals that proliferate across the country. During this time, expect more sunshine, but also more people competing for space in the cities and tourist regions.

Do I need a visa to visit Colombia?

However, this is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Colombia Tours & Travel Guide

Colombia Attractions & Landmarks Guide

A country that has undergone tremendous change over the past few decades, Colombia has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. From idyllic beaches to beautiful cobblestone streets, fun shops and restaurants in Cartagena's old town, to the spectacular views and hiking trails in Medellin, to tasting local coffee in Bogota, there's something for everyone.

Why Visit Colombia on Guided Tour?

When visiting Colombia, independent exploration is a definite option. On the other hand, finding a guided tour is highly advised in order to get the fullest experience of Colombia. While many guided tours in Colombia need to be booked in advance, it is also possible to arrange them when in the country. However, this is likely to increase travel costs and the chance of certain tours being unavailable when travelers wish to book them.

For the vast majority of Colombia tours, guides will be city locals or Colombian natives. This is important, as they will likely already have contacts that they frequently use when planning activities for the group and will know which attractions travelers tend to frequent. Similarly, Colombia tour guides can offer personal advice on where to best spend time during free days and recommend specific places to stay or eat based on pricing and local reputation.

If travelers to Colombia are worried that their guide will not speak their specific language, it is possible to arrange for one that does. However, this factor depends on the Colombia tour operator , as some may not employ guides fluent in certain languages. Therefore, travelers are urged to verify the guides’ languages with the specific Colombia tour operator as far in advance as possible. As a further precautionary measure, travelers to Colombia can invest in a phrasebook. Not only does this help Colombia tour participants connect with other international travelers, but it also allows them to effectively communicate with their tour guide.

Since Colombia guided tours are usually with groups, depending on the size of the party that travelers are with, they are great opportunities to meet other travelers. This allows for future tours together, the exchange of travel information, and a cultural immersion that may not be found as easily in solo explorations.

By working with guided tours in Colombia, travelers set themselves up with the best chance to fully enjoy all that each city and location has to offer. First-hand knowledge of the country along with the long-time travel experience that comes with a Colombia tour guide are invaluable to travelers, as they minimize costs, travel time, and the possibility of missing out on something important!

What to Expect When Visiting Colombia

When traveling to Colombia for extended periods of time, a budget may be necessary to plan. Tours of Colombia that include hotel rooms, food, and activities are certainly available to book, but there are also many other ways to travel economically.

As the food is relatively inexpensive in Colombia, travelers who are not opposed to cooking for themselves may opt to stay at the many lodgings with kitchens available for use. Places to stay in Colombia also have the option for travelers to pay for breakfast in the morning, should they not choose to eat out for every meal.

On a similar note, tipping is not expected or is very minimal when going to places to eat in Colombia. Depending on location, groceries and meals can be sufficiently purchased even with a minimal budget. Within larger cities that have a high density of citizens and international travelers, the prices of commodities tend to be at their cheapest. The opposite rule applies to cities further away from urban centers, such as those along the Amazon or in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains.

For the most part, it appears that Colombia’s attitude towards travelers is a friendly one. Provided that travelers to Colombia are respectful of the fragile environmental landscapes that they explore, it appears most Colombians are willing to help travelers enjoy their country in the same way that they do. Since tourism is a growing sector of Colombia’s economy, travelers may not experience the same standards of “premium” or “value” accommodations that they are used to. This is especially true when it comes to highly-rated places to stay in Colombia, as there are a number of them, but given their high demand, they may be full if travelers do not book their stays in advance.

Colombia Cities

As one of the world’s highest-altitude capitals, Bogotá is an iconic Colombian city that demonstrates a successful integration of green-space within urban architecture. Not only are the colonial roots of the city still present, but also the ways the city has modernized so as to embrace an influx of international travelers.

Travelers who are looking for the best things to see in Bogotá might want to begin with a trip up Monserrate Mountain, found at the center of the capital. A 3+ hour hike or a 1.5-hour cable-car ride brings travelers to the summit, where the Sanctuary of Monserrate still stands after 400 years along with breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

El Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) is a popular landmark to tour with a guide or in a solo venture, as it has more than 50,000 pieces for visitors to view.

The Museo Botero is another frequented locale for travelers in Bogotá to stop at, as it showcases works of both international and local artists.  This museum is also free for travelers and Colombian citizens alike, allowing for a dispersion of art and culture that is not always found in other cities.

For travelers looking to discover Bogotá’s culinary endeavors, the Paloquemao food market is where vendors congregate to showcase their produce, which can also be found in meals at the many restaurant stalls that share the space.

2. Cartagena

As a port city that has been used for centuries, Cartagena is a Colombian city along the Caribbean coastline. Its historic “Old Town,” a maze of colonial-era walls, fortresses, and tunnels, is both a UNESCO Heritage Site and frequent destination for travelers. At the Palace of Inquisition, travelers to Cartagena can not only view intricate colonial-era architecture but also curious religious items on display from that time period.

In a more modern comparison, the Bocagrande neighborhood consists of skyscrapers and restaurants, which travelers often visit for lodging and to partake in the night-life. Its location being directly on the beach allows solo travelers or groups to relax there without having to plan a tour, as access is free to all. However, should travelers desire adventure beyond the city limits, visiting the islands of Barú and Rosario are only possible with guided tours.

The Isla del Barú is a tranquil island with white-sand beaches far from the congested ones found in the city. In comparison, Isla del Rosario may appeal to active travelers, who can scuba dive along the third largest coral reef in the world.

3. Medellin

While viewed historically as a dangerous city, Medellin has made great strides in providing travelers with both safe and entertaining ways to explore the city. By taking one of the many “free walking tours” that are offered in the plazas and parks, travelers can gain an understanding of the surrounding museums, markets, and landmarks within the city.

Soccer fans, or even just those interested in seeing intense team spirit, can watch a Categoría Primera A football game at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium. Travelers interested in art can tour the Museo de Antioquia, which has both international and Colombian exhibits.

The Cementerio Museo de San Pedro, while more macabre, is just as educational for international travelers in Medellin. As the final resting place for many of Colombia’s important historical figures, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the country’s past and those who helped shape it.

For adventurous travelers looking for art in a more informal manner, it can be found on the buildings in Comuna 13. While previously known as one of the most dangerous parts of Medellin, Comuna 13 now boasts local organizations that sponsor neighborhood outreach and countless street art installations. Guided tours to the neighborhood can be arranged, but solo ventures are also possible with local knowledge of the specific areas to see.

The Capital, Bogotá

Bogotá is Colombia’s capital, and a classic stop for Colombia tours. With many cultural and historical sites, museums, art galleries, cafes (for some famous Colombian coffee), and restaurants, you’ll get a real sense for what makes Colombia a unique and special country.

Some main attractions in Bogotá that you shouldn’t miss include:

1. The Gold Museum  - Colombia has a long history when it comes to this most precious commodity. The Gold Museum was founded in 1939 as a way to preserve pre-Hispanic gold works. Gold is not the only material featured - the museum also houses artifacts and pieces made from semi-precious stones, textiles, rock, and pottery. It’s an essential stop on any Bogotá visit.

2. Take a cycling tour - Bogotá is a very walkable and cycle-able city, with boardwalks and parks. Cycling is a very popular way to take in the sights and sounds. There are many day tour options, or if you’re on a multi-day tour through Colombia, an afternoon of cycling in Bogotá is a commonly offered activity on the itinerary.

3. Take in the views from Monseratte Mountain - Don’t worry. If you’re not in the mood to take a several hour hike (ill-advised for safety reasons), the gorgeous panoramic views from the top of Monseratte are easy to get to by cable car. At the top be sure to give yourself enough time for plenty of pictures, and to observe the ‘El Señor Caido’ statue.

Traveling in the Colombian countryside

Traveling through the Colombian countryside provides travelers with the opportunity to come face to face with the vibrant native plants and animals that call the country home. With landscapes that range from the inviting Caribbean coast to the snow-capped Andes Mountains which are preceded by Los Llanos grasslands, travel in Colombia can cross many geographical boundaries.

Colombia’s immense swath of the Amazon Rainforest is about a third of the country and nearly impossible to pass through. Travelers in Colombia can arrange for guided tours through the Amazon that access the rainforest and its river, but solo or group travel is highly inadvisable without first-hand knowledge of the paths and specific times to venture out.

Guided tours through the Amazon typically rely on boats and footpaths to reach their destinations, a factor which leads to limited accessibility for certain travelers in Colombia. If travelers are looking to access the various towns along the Caribbean coast, these same aforementioned methods of travel are the only ones currently available.

However, for travelers with a larger budget and a desire to explore Colombian cities, air travel is an efficient option. Flights between Bogotá, Cartagena, Cali, and Medellin happen multiple times per day and do not always have to be booked in advance. If booking online, travelers looking for flights in Colombia should consider using a private browsing tab when booking.

This avoids the international charges which many online airfare companies tack on for international travelers and can make a significant difference in pricing. For those traveling on a budget in Colombia , buses are available so long as travelers do not mind the lengthy travel times.

Roadways through the more remote, mountainous regions of Colombia are notoriously long and windy. Even still, as a relatively inexpensive way to get between the major cities of Colombia, the roadway system in cities is of fair quality and worth utilizing should travelers find it necessary.

Coffee tours in Colombia

Colombia, known for its sprawling landscapes and fertile land, is the third largest producer of coffee in the world. Therefore, regardless of a traveler’s affinity for coffee, taking one of the many coffee tours in Colombia is highly recommended. Quindío , the region where the coffee bean flourishes, is split by the Andes Mountains and dotted with plantations near the fields.

As an activity offered by many guided tours in Colombia, understanding the process of sustainable coffee production is important both internationally and locally. Therefore, travelers who engage in one of these excursions will be able to tour detailed museums and witness the step-by-step process that goes into providing the coffee Colombia is so well-known for. Of course, international travelers will also be able to taste the many different roasts and flavors that each plantation is known for their reinvention of.

Some of the more famous coffee plantations that travelers come across on coffee tours in Colombia include:

  • Café San Alberto -  Situated along the picturesque slopes that overlook the flatlands of the  Quindío  coffee region, participants in the Café San Alberto coffee tour are able to enjoy their caffeine while basking in the panoramic views afforded from the altitude.
  • La Victoria -  For a more historical perspective, La Victoria  coffee plantation tours delve into the history of coffee, the antique machinery it uses being a living testament. Founded in 1892, the plantation is self-sustaining and harnesses the power of nearby Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain rivers to power its machines. While less about the coffee plant itself, this tour affords travelers a unique glimpse into the past (along with samples)
  • Parque Nacional de Cafe -  In a fun twist on typical coffee tours in Colombia, travelers may want to visit Parque Nacional de Cafe, a theme park based around the bean. Boasting a coffee museum along with 27 rides in the theme park, this activity is a great option for travelers in groups or ones who want adrenaline to go along with their caffeine.

Typical Accommodation Style in Colombia

Depending on the remoteness of a location, accommodations in Colombia range from campsites to luxurious hotel rooms. Within major cities of Bogotá, Medellin, or Cartagena, travelers have access to 4-star hotels from chains such as the Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham, and Hyatt Regency. Of course, international travelers can opt to stay in hotels owned by local Colombian companies, many of which boast the same standards of cleanliness, entertainment, and spa availability.

When looking for accommodations in Colombia of this economic caliber, booking in advance is very useful for saving money and ensuring that space is available at specific locations. Certain hotels may offer discounted guided tours or suggestions on how to spend time in a city, which is invaluable information for travelers looking to make the most of their stay in Colombia.

Similarly, booking ahead with hotels in Colombia enables travelers to plan other excursions or guided tours within the surrounding area, as they have a definite place to stay at night. Choosing to stay at hotels in Colombia is also useful when it comes to dining since many offer food all day and provide free breakfast for those looking to eat before early tours or activities.

For travelers looking for frugal ways to stay in Colombia, the length of stay is an important consideration. Hostels are ways to maintain a flexible schedule, as they do not usually require booking ahead of time and are prolific in cities.

Similarly, while hostels in Colombia are cheap to rent alone, traveling in a group and being willing to share the price of a room significantly lowers individual costs. Depending on the hostel, breakfast and/or other meals are sometimes provided, also helping to limit overall travel costs.

Food in Colombia

Colombian cuisine may not exactly be something to write home about - unless you really hunt around. Another fantastic reason to visit on a tour! In Cartagena you’ll find a lot of European restaurants, particularly in Old Town - and while the food is delicious, you feel that you could be in any European city.

Elsewhere in Colombia you’ll find many rice and bean based dishes, with Spanish and Mexican influences, as well as some more eclectic offerings with Arab and African influences. Colombian food tends to be heavy and many popular dishes include meat - most commonly chicken - like much of traditional South American cuisine.

Like most countries, Colombian food and drink is very regional, with certain areas having access to different ingredients and utilizing different cooking techniques.

Some Colombian foods you absolutely must try:

1. Ajiaco - A heavy, potato based dish, Ajiaco is a favorite soup around the country, but perhaps most popular in Bogota. Soups are very popular in Colombia, an odd choice perhaps for a country with a temperate climate that rarely fluctuates. Soups in Colombia are almost always served with avocado, are chock full of seasonal ingredients and flavorful broths.

2. Empanadas - This classic South American treat is the perfect street food snack to munch on while taking in the sights. Every country seems to have their own spin. In Colombia you’ll find their fried with potato and beef filling - sometimes sweet versions are also found in bakeries!

3. Lechona Tolimense - Many Colombian dishes are quite substantial - designed to feed big groups, and Lechona Tolimense is no exception! Hailing from to Tolima region near Bogota, this dish is comprised of a stuffed pork, that then cooks for ten to twelve hours. Often made for special occasions.

4. Arepas - A delicious side dish, served with almost every meal - or as a stand alone market food, Arepas are fried or baked dough usually filled or topped with some cheesy goodness. You can also have it with condensed milk for a slightly sweeter rendition.

Colombia Lost City Trekking

There are a choice few well known “lost cities” in the world - top places on travelers bucket lists: Machu Picchu in Peru, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Tikal in Guatemala, and smattering of others. These places are incredible and well worth discovering.

However because of their popularity, they are also often crowded and, let’s face it, accessible - so even though you are visiting an archaeological treasure surrounded by jungle it doesn’t feel remote.

If you’re after a Lost City experience that harkens back to what the above sites may have felt like to the first explorers and travelers, Colombia has just the place: “ Ciudad Perdida ”. Literally translated as “Lost City” this hidden archaeological site has just begun to be visited by tourists.

The city pre-dates Machu Picchu by roughly 600 years, and though it may not be quite as picturesque, the experience of getting there, the incredible stillness of the surrounding jungle, and the ancient history surrounding the city ruins will push any thought of Machu Picchu splendor out of your mind.

The trek is intense - expect a lot of off roading, a lot of mud, a lot of water, and high humidity. But for an adventure that few tourists are attempting - though they will within the next 20 years, go now and see it without the crowds.

Top Destinations in Colombia for Nature Lovers

As a country renowned for its vast rainforests, access to the Amazon River , and inviting beaches, Colombia offers many ways for travelers to interact with its biodiversity. Depending on what level of activity travelers are interested in, tours in Colombia range from rowing in a transparent kayak, hiking with a group, or exploring trails via horseback, all of which provide a rewarding travel experience.

Although Bogotá is the nation’s capital city, it has no shortage of eco-travel options for visitors. As a central location for many travelers to Colombia, there are a number of tours that leave on single or multi-day excursions from the city which can be booked in advance.

From the city itself, many travelers use a cable car to ascend the famous Monserrate Mountain (and see the 400-year old sanctuary that crowns it).  Otherwise, the 3+ hour hike along switchback trails is also available for travelers in Colombia should they not wish to hire a horse. Similarly, Lake Guatavitá is a picturesque travel destination for those staying in the capital, as it is possible to visit (weather permitting) within one day.

By arranging for a ride an hour south of the capital, travelers to Colombia can visit Chicaque Park . Public transportation is available to enter this cloud-forest reserve, which is home to miles of hiking trails , a 98-foot zip-line, and a rich variety of birds. Travelers may also see sloths in the trees along the trails or larger animals should they choose to ascend a platform that rests on a 200-year-old tree. Visitors looking to be frugal may camp out, but the option to stay in unique tree-houses are available as well.

For those wishing to escape the city altogether, tours are available in El Chocó , along Colombia’s Pacific coast. As a mixture of rainforest and shoreline, the area provides the perfect opportunity for travelers to spot whales or see some of Colombia’s countless species of birds . The time between June and October is considered the best for whale-watching, while February-July is when the famous Leatherback sea-turtles appear to lay their eggs on the shore. Poison arrow frogs are abundant along the hiking trails of these Colombian jungle tours and the more fortunate travelers may even spot a jaguar.

Along the Amazon River , travelers to Colombia may choose to stay in Leticia, a town with many of the same amenities, restaurants, and entertainment as are found in less rural locations. However, the opportunity to see lemurs, birds, and Pink River dolphins up-close are unique to these types of jungle-cities and provide amazingly personal experiences with the surrounding wildlife.

Colombia Amazon Tours

Colombia posses the northwest corner of South America and the Amazon, and this portion of jungle makes up nearly ⅓ of the country. With the  Amazon  forming such a large physical and cultural part of the country, it makes sense that any trip to Colombia should include at least a taste of the world’s largest rainforest.

Here are some of the best towns to visit in the Colombian Amazon:

Leticia can be found at Colombia’s most southern point, and is the most developed and well known of the country’s Amazonian town. Residents of this town still live a relatively traditional lifestyle, and primarily depend on agriculture and tourism to make a living. Another interesting component of Leticia is that it is one of the main aquarium fish trading posts in the world -- hundreds of Amazonian species are raised or captured in this town, and then shipped to Bogota, where they are distributed worldwide.

If you are going on an eco-tour, or plan to  immerse yourself in the local community  by experiencing traditional jungle life with one of the remote indigenous tribes of Colombia, Leticia will likely be your home base.

This town is located in Vaupes, a region of Amazonia that is one of the premiere birding destinations in the world. The town is incredibly isolated and definitely far off of the beaten path -- tourist infrastructure was never built due to the fact that the town used to be a base for the FARC (An anti-government guerilla movement).

Many Colombians consider this to be “real jungle,” unlike even Leticia. There are very few tourists in this region, and and because of the lack of development for tourism it is highly recommended you take a guided tour of the region. One major highlight include the Cerros de Mavecure (Mavecure Hills), which are an incredible destination for  hiking , and a great place to go camping overnight.

Puerto Nariño.

This small town is only 75km away from much more known Leticia, and is known for its dark, nutrient-rich waters and abundant wildlife. One its main attractions is the church by the town’s own Santander Park, where parrots flock to each night to sleep. By paying a small donation, the nearby church will allow you to climb its steeple and watch both sunset, and the parrots as they come home.

Puerto Nariño is also a great place to learn more about Colombia’s indigenous communities. 95% of the town’s population is indigenous, and the entire town practices a more customary way of life -- there isn’t even a single car in the town!

Like the town Mitu, Guaviare is another very off-the-grid travel location, and this is because of the town’s history with political conflict. However, things are safe for the mindful traveler, and Guaviare boasts dozens of fascinating sights and wonders. For those interested in  nature and wildlife , Guaviare is one of the few locations on earth that experiences a healthy red algae bloom in its rivers and lakes. This turns the water a startling pink for half of the year, and is an incredible sight to behold.

Even if you look just in the surroundings of the town, you are sure to find a wide range of flora and fauna. Peering into the water, you may see pink dolphins and caiman, and quick glance into the tree tops will reveal monkeys, toucans, and parrots... life is everywhere in Guaviare.

If you are interested in a  historical tour of Colombia , or, rather, a prehistorical tour, Guaviare is also home to several caves filled with beautiful, 10,000-year-old cave drawings.

Having languished in the tourist wilderness for almost two decades, Colombia has come back with a vengeance, rapidly earning a reputation as one of the most exciting new travel destinations in South America. Discover the countries palm-fringed Caribbean beaches, snow-capped Andean peaks, national parks and rainforests that beggars belief, with one of our Colombia tours. From the cosmopolitan streets of Bogotá, to the cobbled alleys of its colonial outposts, you can indulge in everything on your Colombia holidays, from mud bathing in volcanoes, trekking on glaciers or sipping Cuba Libras in the bars of Cartagena. The only South American country with a coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean, Colombia lies just to the south of Panama, providing the gateway between South and Central America. Hemmed in on three sides by Venezuela, Brazil and Ecuador, it was named in honour of Christopher Columbus, despite the fact that Columbus never actually visited the country. Infused with an almost dream-like quality that obviously inspired the author, Gabriel García Márquez, Colombia offers up a vast array of activities from jungle walks and archaeological ruins, to mountain treks, whale watching and coffee plantations. After so long in the wilderness, a trip to Colombia is a must for any traveller.

The dry seasons (November to March and July to August) are the most comfortable times to visit (especially if trekking) although travel is possible at any time of the year. The country enjoys an equatorial climate and can get hot and humid, but thanks to the Andean Mountain range there are many areas at an elevated altitude, which experience a more temperate climate. (It can be very cold in the mountain tops on the Los Nevados day trip). The coastal regions are also cooled by the sea breezes.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Colombia though you should be up to date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. For some regions you require a Yellow Fever Certificate. There are mosquito borne diseases presently in Colombia such as Malaria and Zika is present in some parts of Colombia so we recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and/or preventative treatments.

Officially visitors to the Tayrona National park only need to show a Yellow Fever certificate if they have visited Brazil or certain West African countries in the previous 6 months. However, on occasions overzealous park wardens can request this documentation from all visitors. As a precaution we suggest that guests are up to date with their YF vaccination and must present their certificate if requested. Although unlikely to happen, there is a small risk that failure to have your certificate may hold up the entrance process to the National park or entry could be denied.

In Colombia the official unit of currency is the Colombian Peso (COP).

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

In the churches and cathedrals women should cover their heads with a scarf or hat, while men should take their hats off.

Language & Religion

Colombia’s official language is Spanish although those dialects and languages spoken by other ethnic groups are also considered official in their territories. The dominant faith in the country is Catholicism and although the country has a very colourful history they are often very devout in their beliefs.

Colombia is 5 hours behind GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Food and drink play a big part in Colombian culture – please do not expect to lose any weight on this trip! But do just be prepared as breakfast can be a bit repetitive usually eggs, bread and coffee. The diet is also quite meat orientated, so vegetarians may struggle. In Colombia, hot chocolate is still a staple in almost every Colombian home, accompanied by Colombian pastries, bread, cheese and even eggs.

Cafe Colombia

Colombia is just the most beautiful country, and it's beauty was only heightened by our passionate guide. She was a great advocate for her country and Intrepid. We stayed in boutique, locally owned accommodation in the best locations, ate like kings and really experienced the diversity of this country and its people. If you haven't been to Colombia, I couldn't recommend this trip more highly.

I didnt enjoy the tour as i usually do with G-Ad. Im glad i didnt do the longer format (from bogota). I didnt get on well with tour leader (i have interest in Escobar) and learning history behind what happened. He berated me on the bus because i had genuine interest. Whatever my reason for coming to colombia should be no concern to TL.

Explore Colombia

The tour was a good mix of active adventure and relaxation. Our guide, Jeronimo, was excellent and went above and beyond for one of our group members, who although was in her 20s, acted as if she was in her 80s. I was disappointed with the lack of safes in the guest houses, not hotels, we stayed at. The introduction letter at the front desk of our first hotel advised us to leave our valuables in the room safe or safe at the front desk. Our first guest house had neither. The first guest house also didn't have complete walls in our bathroom so you could clearly hear the people in the next room, and vice versa, especially when they used the bathroom. The only accommodations with a safe was in Bogota. I find this unacceptable. If a company books hundreds of rooms at these guest houses a year is it that difficult to require them to have a room safe?

Private Immersive Cultural Tour in Cartagena with Day Trips

I very much enjoyed my time in Cartagena, Columbia, South America in 2022. I was told that the month of December afforded us mildness in regard to the usual warmer temperatures of other months. My Accommodations were comfortable and safe, and we had a magnificent hostess. Bernell's planning was high quality and I did not have to do anything except arrive there. I even had money exchanged before leaving the USA. One less detail for her to have to take care of upon my arrival. We, Bernell and I, made new friends in Cartagena and we are excited to be working with the dance leaders we met to host a Dancing in the Street joint project in the future. More details to come. It is my sincere hope that you all will accept her next invitation to "meet her" in a foreign or unique location, or allow her to plan a travel excursion for your family so you too can experience "travel like a local" -- I guarantee you will be delighted that you did.

Explore Colombia’s Magic Destination on this Tour

It was an amazing trip which showed very well the diversity of Colombian landscapes, climates, nature, cities, food, culture and people. Hotels were very good and in the center of the cities. Especially the GHL in Cartagena was great to explore the numerous restaurants and bars of Getsmani in the evening. The transport to the airport and to the hotel worked well. You get your flight ticket via Email one day before. If not just drop them a short message and you will receive them within a few minutes. The drivers will contact you via whatsapp few hours before or when you arrived at the airport. I booked the tour with an English speaking guide, because I don’t speak Spanish. It was a good choice and the English of the guides was very good. The tours were good, you don’t have to stand in the lines like normal tourists and in the most touristic places you get there earlier than the big groups. So you can enjoy the places, e.g. El Peñol rock, not so crowded at the beginning. The time schedule is also relative flexibel. You have enough time to visit the attractions and there is also time to go shopping or having e.g. a very good Colombian coffee without hurry or stopping at a ATM. The included free snacks and lunch during day were always delicious and local. The advantage of a private tour is definitely that you can ask everything and you get much more information of culture, daily life, politics and so on cause you spend a lot of time with the guide. The only big con for me was the very high price if you are travelling alone and not in groups of 2+.

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Colombia

This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & Martin really tried his best to accommodate me, I am so grateful. Unfortunately I had an emergency & had to leave on day 4 so my trip was disrupted. I would love to return to Columbia in the future. This was an action packed itinerary. I highly recommend this tour & tour guide Martin to anyone who is active & loves to explore.
Not much in the way of wildlife, but plenty of beaches.

Uncover Colombia

The essence of colombia.

Much of colonial Colombia is untouched by time, whole towns preserved in medieval aspic; relics of ancient civilizations include mystical statuary two millennia old; and modern highlights are a brilliant blend of coffee farms and coral islands.

Why Choose a Tour in Colombia?

Castles and carnivals, convents, cathedrals, and colonial towns, all come together in Colombia, punctuating a landscape of astonishing biodiversity from plains, plateaus, and pristine coasts to mountain peaks, moorlands, misted cloud forests and tropical rainforest.

Colombia’s capital, Bogotá is a place of culture and contrasts, with pre-Columbian artefacts in the Museo del Oro, and contemporary art by Fernando Botero in the gallery which takes his name; churches, characterful streets and well-kept squares in its colonial heart, and up-market shops and up-tempo entertainment in the encircling metropolitan sprawl of modern towers.

In contrast, Villa de Leyva looks much as it did four hundred years ago. The National Heritage town is a gorgeous glimpse of Colombia’s colonial past, its narrow streets still lined with 16 th /17 th century monasteries, its huge Plaza Mayor lauded as the largest entirely cobbled space in South America.

A year-round temperate climate has earned Medellin its epithet ‘The City of Eternal Spring’. The modern provincial capital of mountainous Antioquia, the city spreads up the sides of a scenic valley, juxtaposing high-rise towers with colourful cottages, with a Metro Cable climbing to fabulous views.

Nearby Guatapé is a charming small town with a giant rock monolith, and mini-cruises on its massive reservoir; while dug-out canoes take to the lake and mangrove-lined channels at La Boquilla fishing village, close to Cartagena.

Said to be Colombia’s most visited city, Cartagena is the cosmopolitan port for sailings to castaway islands, its beaches along the Bocagrande hemmed by glitzy condo’s; while colourful facades, coral-stone forts, and cathedral towers pepper the walled old town, steeped in Spanish Inquisition history.

Rural landscapes include the Coffee Region, its three districts collectively awarded UNESCO status, its Arabica coffee ranking among the world’s finest. In their luxuriant hills, the plantations attribute this coveted quality to the traditional methods of harvesting and production, all done by hand.

Uniquely different and UNESCO listed, San Agustin archaeological area is a mystical place of sacred sites and ancient sculptures, depicting gods and mythical beasts, and set in splendid scenery; with lavish tombstones in leafy shade at the Forest of Statues, and painted figures in La Pelota Park.

When to go on Colombia Holidays

Crossed by the Equator in its southern reaches, Colombia’s climate is generally tropical, with daytime average temperatures hovering around 35°, and nights dropping only to 16°, throughout the year. Variations come not with seasons but with altitude, the higher the region, the cooler the climes; and rainfall is little to none outside the months of May to September.

Jules Verne’s journeys are timed for the best experience of the regions and the most comfortable months for touring.

Who are Colombia Tours Suited To?

Cosmopolitan cities, charismatic towns, colourful villages and a rich cultural heritage make-up the patchwork of ancient, colonial, and contemporary Colombia, creating intriguing, eye-opening tours which will appeal to cognoscente and curious traveller alike.

A highlight on the country’s calendar, the exuberant Barranquilla Carnival celebrates a significant Catholic feast day with parades, music and folkloric dance. The festival has UNESCO status on the list of Humanity’s Intangible Cultural Heritage; with its date varying from year to year, as the four-day, ‘moveable feast’ always begins on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday.

Why Book Colombia Tours with Jules Verne?

With 45 years’ experience and a passion for creating extraordinary adventures, Jules Verne takes you to iconic landmarks and lesser-known sites, with expert tour guides who share their local knowledge, and show you hidden gems. Local highlights on our journeys in Colombia could include a basket-weaving demo, picking Arabica beans and tasting the coffee they create, a street food walk in Cartagena, and experiencing the Barranquilla festival.

Our guided tours to Colombia are ABTA and ATOL protected, and we offer a 100% price guarantee, so you can book with complete confidence.

  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc. For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

This Colombia adventure is a very active tour. The most challenging aspect of this spectacular journey is the increasing altitude of each successive destination. At these elevations, the atmospheric pressure is about 30% lower than you would experience at sea level, which translates to a 30% fall in available oxygen. The effect of this decrease in inspired oxygen (hypoxia) may lead to the symptoms of altitude sickness. These symptoms include headache, nausea, insomnia, loss of appetite, irritability and breathlessness. In isolated cases, these symptoms may worsen and progress to complications that are more serious. While we have created a memorable journey that will slowly acclimate you to ever-higher elevations, you may experience some of the conditions described above. You should be in good health and able to climb into and out of small boats, river rafts, and planes, and also be able to walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain.

Two on-tour flights and two train journeys are scheduled on this itinerary to highlight different aspects of Andean culture and geography.

The itinerary includes several early morning starts and leaves little scheduled free time.

This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Throughout the tour, we will provide you with clean and safe drinking water.

In Colombia, it is nominally illegal to smoke in any indoor place.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Airline Disinfection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

In brief, the Andes Mountains in Bogota, Colombia, from sea level to 8,660 ft (2,640 m), average daytime temperatures range from 24 to 67°F (14 to 27 °C). During the wet season from December to February, the days and nights are cold and wet; during the dry season from March to November, the days are hot and the nights are cool. In Andean Peru average daytime temperatures range from 48 to 64 °F (9 to 18 °C). During its dry season, the days are warm and dry and the nights are very cold; during its rainy season, the days are rainy and the nights are rainy and cold.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Your adventure in Colombia is casual. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Comfortable, cotton clothing is suggested. High temperatures and humidity in most areas make lightweight clothing practical. Long pants and long sleeves are suggested for sun and mosquito protection. Evenings in all hotels and lodges are casual with no specific dress code. Casual resort wear is appropriate for dinner on the first and last nights of the tour. Most importantly, bring comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in. It is important that your shoes have good ankle support as the walking trails can be wet and muddy.  All hotels provide valet laundry services.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. We recommend you pack the following items for travel to Colombia:

  • Comfortable, cotton clothing
  • Shorts and long pants
  • Short and long sleeve shirts
  • A light sweater or jacket for the evenings
  • Lightweight waterproof slicker
  • Comfortable walking shoes with adequate ankle support
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and plenty of film
  • Battery-operated travel alarm clock
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Small backpack for long walks
  • Pre-moistened towelettes
  • Adequate personal toiletries and sundries
  • Zippered plastic bags to keep important items dry during rainy excursions
  • Travel journal
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

We recommend that you pack any prescription medicines (an adequate supply for your entire journey) along with your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag, in order to minimize any inconvenience should your luggage be lost or delayed.  We also recommend, for your peace of mind and personal security, that all expensive jewelry and other valuables be left at home.

We have partnered with Necessary Gear, an experienced online provider of travel gear, to assist you in selecting the appropriate gear for this destination. Their Tauck-exclusive website is accessible at necessarygear.com . Please note that while Tauck has an affiliation with Necessary Gear this is only one option for travel gear. You may wish to look into other outfitters for your travel needs.

Day 1 - Cartagena

Bienvenidos.

After you get into Cartagena, head through the massive stone walls circling the old city toward the colorful homes and shops in the middle of town to check into our hotel.

Unpack and unwind in Caribbean paradise before you meet up with your new travel crew. You'll get to know everyone as we roll out to a happy hour and your first Colombian sunset at one of our favorite spots in town.

After sampling the famous rum and grabbing a mojito or two, we'll head to dinner at a lively local restaurant that serves up fantastic fresh food and traditional Colombian dishes.

Salsa dancing in Colombia

Day 2 - Cartagena

Cartagena culture.

After a good night's rest, we'll start the trip off with a full day of cultural immersion. First up: a walking tour of the historic old town, including an overview of important landmarks and events, as well as the best places to drink, shop, and find local food..

We'll have a traditional lunch at a local hotspot in one of the area's palenques.  From there, we'll visit a music school that helps children find purpose through music and mentoring. Enjoy a performance of the local beats before learning how to play a drum yourself!

Last but not least, we'll head to the tiny Totumo Volcano for a one-of-a-kind experience that just may be the muddy highlight of your trip.

A mud bath with friends in Colombia.

Day 3 - Islas del Rosario

Catch up with the crew over breakfast, and then grab your hat and swimsuit—we've got a day of paradise in store. We'll hop in a private speed boat and cruise out over the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea toward the lush, tropical Islas Del Rosario.

You'll have the chance to ogle Pablo Escobar's abandoned casino and even snorkel the coral reefs around one of his sunken airplanes! For lunch, we'll head to a secluded beach club where you can throw down a few more mojitos, play some volleyball, or kick back and relax in the sun.

We'll take the boat back to Cartagena; freshen up at the hotel before finding your friends and wandering through the charming, colorful streets.

bailey-boat-merch-1_Original 2.jpg

Day 4 - Cartagena

Rum & salsa.

You have some free time to explore Cartagena on your own in the morning. Walk past the cannons along the fortress wall, pick up some delicious Colombian coffee, or check out the street art in hip and trendy Getsemani.   Then, after a bit of independent exploration, it's time for some local culture. We're heading to one of the city's liveliest salsa spots so you can learn some moves from the locals. This is the salsa capital of the world, after all—it's important that you get in on the action.

In the evening, meet up with the crew for a Colombian rum tasting, where you'll get the lowdown on all aspects of the country's favorite liquor.

Walking in Guatape, Colombia.

Day 5 - Cartagena

Heart of medellin.

In the morning, we'll catch a flight to Medellin, which has transformed into one of the coolest cities in Latin America (and the planet). After checking in and unpacking, we'll have dinner in one of the trendiest neighborhoods in town. Be prepared to try some local cuisine you've never heard of before!

*Domestic flight times change for each trip and will be confirmed 2 weeks before departure.

Architecture in Colombia.

Day 6 - Medellin

For the love of coffee.

There's no better way to start the day than with a cup of joe or two. And no one makes a better cup of joe than the Colombians. We're heading to the hills in search of a caffeine fix.

Did you know that 95% of Colombian coffee is produced by family farms? You'll have the chance to visit one of these little operations firsthand and learn about a coffee-making process passed down through generations.

In the afternoon, we'll head to colorful Comuna 13, once considered the most dangerous neighborhood in the city. Our amazing local guide will walk us through his community, explaining how art, music, and dance have revitalized the area. From there, we'll ride up Medellin's cable car for some absolutely breathtaking views.

Planting coffee near Medellin.

Day 7 - Guatape

Countryside views.

Get ready for one action-packed day. Today, we'll get up early and head into the countryside to see a different side of Colombian life. We'll start with a reservoir boat ride where we'll have the chance to check out one of Pablo Escobar's abandoned houses (it was once bombed by a rival cartel).

After that, we'll stop for lunch in Colombia's most colorful town before heading to the zig-zagging staircase of the Rock of Guatapé. Hike 700 winding stairs to the top, and it'll all be worth it—the views are unreal!

small group travel colombia

Day 8 - Medellin Your Medellin

Today's free, so find the crew to soak up some final Colombian vibes.

If you decide to roam through El Poblado, consider checking out some of the markets. You can find great local cuisine, international dishes, and street eats in Mercado del Rio or Mercado de l a Playa.

That evening, we'll have a farewell group dinner to round out our Colombian adventure. Then, hit the streets for one last night out in Medellin. Ball pit, anyone?

small group travel colombia

Day 9 - Medellin

Sadly, today is the last day in Colombia. Join your travel group for one last breakfast before heading to the airport.

Flying out later? The hotel will happily store your bags until you leave.

If you've got a few more days to explore, consider planning a trip to Tayrona National Park or hunting the lost city deep in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

About colombia

Once marred by drug cartels, Colombia has undergone a remarkable evolution. Today, the nation embraces a fusion of indigenous heritage, Spanish legacy, and modern vigor. Along the Caribbean coast, Cartagena blends historical allure with a new-age skyline. The ancient charm of the 16th-century old town stands in contrast to the city's contemporary urban sprawl. Meanwhile, in Medellín, a lively art scene and vibrant nightlife define the city's magnetic pull. Galleries, theaters, and salsa clubs punctuate the landscape, embodying Colombia's rich cultural heritage.
