Many thanks for great information!

small luxury nile cruises

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

19 of the best Nile cruises for 2024

Discover egypt’s past on a voyage along the world’s longest river with one of these unforgettable nile cruises.

Traditional felucca boats on the Nile at Luxor

S ailing the River Nile is a bucket-list experience. Since the first tourists travelled down the river in 1869, it has attracted visitors enthralled by Egypt’s pharaohs, prophets and pyramids. The world’s longest river flows through 11 African countries for 4,100 miles before spilling out into the Mediterranean, but it’s the Upper Nile, which snakes through southern Egypt, that offers the most cruise itineraries. These visit some of the country’s famous ruins and archaeological discoveries, including the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Aswan and the Temple of Horus. Cruises operate year-round but sailings between October and May will avoid scorching summer temperatures. Whether you choose to sail on a modern cruise ship, a restored paddle steamer or even a traditional two-masted dahabiya, these are some of the best Nile cruises and itineraries for this journey of a lifetime.

1. G Adventures: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile

A traditional dahabiya cruises the Nile at sunset

Best for a dahabiya experience Leave the crowded ports to the oversized ships and opt for a more serene sailing with G Adventures. Its ten-day Egypt: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile itinerary includes four nights in Cairo and five on board a traditional dahabiya, which has no engine so you can sit back and listen to the sounds of the waves. With just ten cabins, it can dock at small sites close to villages for a more authentic experience. These include a visit to a nonprofit charity working with young people in the West Bank, a barbeque on a remote island in the middle of the Nile and a trip to Nubian village for mint tea with a local family.

2. ms farah: taste of egypt.

Best for on-board experience The real attraction of a Nile cruise lies on dry land, but guests on an Avalon Waterways cruise will be in no hurry to disembark. This ship has 56 deluxe cabins and two suites, and all have oversized balconies to watch the world sail by. Treats on board include free use of a sauna and steam room, complimentary wi-fi, barbecue lunches and dinners on the sun deck, a library and welcome amenities including a fruit basket and canapés. Guests can join an Egyptian cooking class, use a telescope to stargaze or attend a lecture by an Egyptologist. Ten-day Taste of Egypt itineraries feature five nights in Cairo, including lunches in local restaurants, trips to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Aswan High Dam, and an optional dinner cruise with live music and belly dancing.

3. MS Nile Plaza: Cairo, Alexandria and a Nile Cruise

The port of Alexandria is part of the 12-day MS Nile Plaza tour

Best for visiting Alexandria While most cruises include time in Cairo before sailing from Luxor, Titan Travel’s Cairo, Alexandria and a Nile Cruise itinerary also squeezes in a full-day excursion to the port city of Alexandria, the former capital of ancient Egypt. The 12-day tour includes seven nights on the MS Nile Plaza with its restaurant, bar and sundeck, two and a half days of free time and even a VIP transfer from your home for your flight to Cairo. Highlights of the sailing include the Valley of the Queens, the beautiful Temple of Philae and an excursion on a traditional wooden felucca.

4. Mövenpick MS Darakum: Wonders of the Nile, Cairo to Luxor

A cabin on MS Darakum

Best for watching the world go by Those who like to take the long route and stay on a boat for the duration of their Egyptian adventure in Egypt will enjoy a cruise on the 52-cabin MS Darakum. Thanks to its very low draft, it is one of the few vessels that can sail from Cairo to Luxor. After an intoxicating few days in the capital, exploring its markets, mosques and ancient wonders, it’s time to travel south. The beauty of covering a much longer distance than a traditional Nile cruise is the extra time it allows to simply sit and watch the world go by. Riviera Travel’s Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Luxor itinerary is sprinkled with long and leisurely sailing days where there’s little to do except relax on the sun deck and gaze out at the small farms and date plantations, before retreating inside to attend the fascinating onboard lectures.

After time in Cairo and a short flight to Luxor, it’s time to board for a voyage through 7,000 years of history. The traditional-style ships include large Royal suites and very high levels of service and comfort throughout. As well as all the usual big hitters, there are plenty of offbeat options that make this an eye-opening choice for the curious traveller. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the impressive seventh-century St Simeon Monastery, the nearby traditional Nubian village and the chance to see Cleopatra’s unfinished obelisk.

As well as offering trips to the temples of Edfu and the island of El Nabatat on itineraries that include a four-day trip from Luxor, the boat has plenty to keep guests entertained, from a library and games room to a gym and open-air pool. At night, astrology lectures reveal how the night sky influenced life in Egypt in the past. 10. SS Sudan: On the River Nile

SS Sudan

Best for Agatha Christie lovers One of the most historic and atmospheric vessels to ply the Nile’s waters, this celebrated 19th-century steamer once welcomed Agatha Christie aboard. It is widely believed that it was that trip in 1933, accompanying her husband on an archaeological mission, which paved the way for one of her most accomplished murder mysteries. Following Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 adaptation of Death on the Nile , the SS Sudan is the perfect ship for fans of the Queen of Crime; there are cabins named after Christie and her character Hercule Poirot. The boat exudes opulent period charm, from the teak decks and parquet flooring to the brass bed frames in many of the rooms. Guests also have exclusive access to a network of expert archaeologists who will help bring the historical ruins to life.

11. SS Misr: Timeless Nile

SS Misr

Best for traditionalists Misr, which means “Egypt” in Arabic, is a propeller steamer that has long enjoyed a romance with this country. Built in Preston in 1918 by the Royal Navy, in 1938 it was converted into a luxury yacht that played host to King Farouk, the country’s penultimate monarch. The vessel has now been fully restored to its former glory, and its 12 and 14-night trips are known for celebrating local food — there’s a rather regal feeling inside the main Marasem restaurant, with framed photos of past royalty dotted about and waiters smartly dressed in attire inspired by the glory days of Farouk. The food is largely international but local flavours are celebrated in dishes such as bessara, a local dip made from fava beans.

13. La Flaneuse du Nil: traditional-style sailing

La Flaneuse du Nil

Best for return visitors For those who have already sailed the Nile and may be looking for something different, La Flaneuse du Nil is a tempting option. While most boats travel north from Aswan towards Luxor, this intimate five-day cruise heads south into Lake Nasser bound for the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. Powered by sails and tugs, just like the original dahabiyas that were once a regular sight on the waterway, this cosy vessel showcases the subtle beauty of the vast man-made reservoir that straddles Egypt’s border with Sudan. The boat sails at a leisurely pace, with stops for lake swims, sunset hikes and solitary mornings on quiet beaches, as well as guided trips to some of the most impressive ancient wonders Egypt has to explore.

14. Sanctuary Sun Boat III: luxury cruise

Sanctuary Sun Boat III

Best for fun on the river An extremely attractive boat, and one of the few vessels to (occasionally) cruise from Cairo to Aswan, the Sanctuary Sun Boat III takes its inspiration from the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. Think ecru tones, four-poster beds draped in the finest Egyptian linen and entertainment in the form of belly dancers and whirling dervishes. There are modern touches, too, with air conditioning and a swimming pool on the Cleopatra Oasis sundeck: the perfect spot on which to sip a hibiscus juice and watch the world go by.

Ideal Travel Seasons and Durations

Choosing the right time for your Dahabiya adventure is pivotal to relishing the beauty of the Nile and the surrounding landscapes. Packing Essentials for a Luxurious Cruise

Packing for your Dahabiya escapade requires careful thought to ensure you have everything you need for a lavish and hassle-free journey. Here’s a checklist of essential items to bring along:

  • Comfortable Clothing: Opt for lightweight and breathable attire suitable for the warm daytime temperatures. Don’t forget a light jacket for cooler evenings.
  • Sun Protection: Pack wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun’s rays during onshore explorations.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are essential, especially for exploring historical sites and local markets.
  • Swimwear: Most Dahabiya vessels have sundecks and even plunge pools, so pack your swimwear for refreshing dips.
  • Electronics and Chargers: Capture the beauty around you with your camera or smartphone, and bring the necessary chargers and adapters.
  • Medications and Toiletries: Carry any prescription medications you require, along with a basic medical kit. Don’t forget personal toiletries, either.
  • Power Bank: An extra power bank can be a lifesaver, ensuring your devices stay charged during extended outings.
  • Evening Attire: While the Dahabiya experience leans toward a casual atmosphere, you might want to include a slightly dressier outfit for special onboard evenings or dining occasions.
  • Entertainment: For moments of relaxation, bring along a book, e-reader, or any other joy you enjoy.

What is a Nile Cruise?

A Nile Cruise is a river cruise on the Nile, the most common route between Luxor and Aswan in Upper Egypt. The ship makes several stops at different stations to allow its passengers to visit the ancient Egyptian monuments. It is the best way to take a trip into the past to get close to the pharaonic culture and enjoy the breathtaking nature of the Nile Valley.

As already mentioned, most Nile cruise ships operate between Luxor and Aswan. The trip south from Luxor to Aswan takes 5 days and vice versa from Aswan to Luxor takes 4 days.

During the journey, the most important monuments in Upper Egypt are visited. In Luxor, one visits the Luxor temple and the Karnak temple, one of the biggest temple arrangements of Egypt on the eastern Nile shore Theben east. On the western side in Thebes-West the temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, and the Valley of the Kings.

In Aswan, the dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the Philae Temple on Elephant Island are visited. Between both cities, the Horus Temple in Edfu and the double temple of the two gods Sobek and Haroeris in Kom Ombo are visited.

When the ship docks at Aswan, passengers can make an optional excursion to Abu Simbel on Lake Nasser to visit the impressive temple complex of Ramses II.

There are very few ships that sail the route in a different period and then make a few more sights, but here we have introduced you to what most ships do.

Also, there is the big or long Nile cruise that goes from Aswan or Luxor to Cairo or of course vice versa. This takes place however only at certain times because of the Nile level, which is why most visitors to Egypt prefer a short stay in Cairo, after or before the Nile cruise in Upper Egypt, if you want to see the sights of all Egypt.

How does the Nile Cruise work?

The duration of a Nile cruise varies according to the route the ship takes. There is either the small Nile cruise, which only goes in Upper Egypt from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa, and the long or large Nile cruise, which goes from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan and vice versa. From Luxor to Aswan it takes 5 days and from Aswan to Luxor 4 days.

It is also possible to go from Luxor to Aswan and back to Luxor and in this case the trip takes 8 days. The same is valid of course for the journey Aswan-Aswan. The ships that make the long Nile cruise are considerably less than those that travel between Luxor and Aswan, and besides, this cruise is only possible at certain times of the year due to the level of the Nile.

There are very few fleets of ships, among which the two Oberoi Nile cruise ships Philae and Zahra, which make the route between Luxor and Aswan at a different time of year. They sail from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa in 6 or 7 days. With all the rest of the ships the journey takes the same time as mentioned above, the only difference is the day of the week when the respective ship starts the journey.

On the way between Aswan and Luxor, one visits different beautiful sights for example, in Thebes-East (Karnak and Luxor Temple), then in Thebes-West (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Memnon Colossus). Afterward one visits the legendary Horus Temple in Edfu and the double temple in Kom Ombo. Do not miss the chance and take part in one of our Nile cruises.

Which deck to choose on the Nile Cruise?

Actually, you are only in the cabin for sleeping and therefore you should not pay too much attention to it, but we still want to give you some useful tips and advice on how to choose the right cabin.

In general, cabins in the middle deck are the most popular because it is the quietest there. On the upper deck, you will be disturbed by the pattering on the sun deck and you can hear it when tables or sunbeds are pushed.

On the Nile deck, you may hear the engines in the cabins in the stern. But it is important to mention that the ship almost always sails during the day and therefore the engines are off at night while the guests are sleeping.

For the same reason it is rather unimportant on which side your cabin is, because the ship sails almost exclusively during the day, you will have a view on the Nile anyway.

During the times when your ship will be onshore and the view from another ship is blocked on one side, you will either be on a sightseeing tour or you will sleep.

As we told you above, the guests are in their cabins almost only at night to sleep, otherwise, you are either on a tour, in the restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, in the bar, or lying by the pool on the sun deck.

When is the best time for a Nile Cruise?

The Nile Cruise is a river cruise on the Nile, the most frequent between Luxor and Aswan in Upper Egypt. The ship makes several stops at different stations to allow its passengers to visit the ancient Egyptian monuments. It is the best way to take a trip into the past to get close to the pharaonic culture and enjoy the breathtaking nature of the Nile Valley.

The best time for a Nile cruise in Upper Egypt can not be determined, because it depends on the interests of the visitor and his resilience in heat. One could only say that the Nile Valley in summer (May to September) can be too hot for most European visitors. The temperatures in Luxor and Aswan are about 45° and therefore it is not suitable for a Nile cruise especially for people who cannot stand the heat or who have circulation problems.

In the months from October to April, the maximum temperature is 30° and therefore one could say that this is the optimal time for a Nile cruise. If you plan bathing stay at the Red Sea after or before the Nile cruise in Upper Egypt, you should consider that it can be rather too cold for bathing in the winter months (December to February). At this time the temperatures in Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheik can sink up to 10°.

But it is also worth mentioning that the heat in Upper Egypt is dry and that the above mentioned high temperatures are only under the sun and that it is mostly bearable in the shade. Therefore, despite the heat, some travelers still decide to go on a Nile cruise in the summer months.

The ships are seldom fully occupied and one can avoid the crowds at the monuments. Most of the sightseeing tours take place early in the morning and the tour guide always looks for a place in the shade if he wants to explain something to the group. Also, the prices fall at this time and one finds a lot of special offers for a Nile cruise in Upper Egypt.

What clothes do you pack for the Nile Cruise?

Every place has its matching clothes, even on the sundeck. Because of this, you should consider appropriate clothing if you want to travel. For example, half-naked during temple visits are not normal and customary. On high-quality luxury Nile cruises, you can choose something more festive to wear. Your suitable, carefully chosen clothes will distinguish you from the ship’s restaurant crew and you will, therefore, follow the dress code correctly.

Every place has its suitable clothes, even on the sun deck. Because of this, you should consider appropriate clothing when you travel. For example, half-naked during temple visits are not normal and customary. On high-quality luxury Nile cruises, you can choose something more festive to wear.

Your suitable, carefully chosen clothes will distinguish you from the ship’s restaurant crew and you will, therefore, follow the dress code correctly.

As far as women are concerned, unlike most Upper Egyptian cities, it is quite alright for women to walk in shorts and spaghetti straps, or to lie down comfortably in Bikini by the pool. Luxor and Aswan are two of the most important tourist destinations in the world and their inhabitants have been used to the European way of dressing for a long time and show a great tolerance towards different cultures.

However, shorts and flip-flops or sandals are forbidden for men as well as for women in the restaurant of the ship. You do not necessarily have to wear a suit or an evening dress for lunch, but you are expected to wear at least a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

Onboard, the program includes a Nubian show, Galabya party, or belly dance show. There are nice costumes, which you can buy with the help of your guide from the market during the excursions.

On excursions, you should pay attention to appropriate clothing, so miniskirts or shorts are not recommended. Half-naked through the temples does not go down well.

A further hint would be sturdy shoes for the sightseeing tours. Please note that the monuments you will visit are located in the desert. You will also often have to walk a distance until you reach the temple or until you have seen all parts of the huge temple complexes. Many women in Egypt wear a hijab/headscarf, but this is not required for tourists. You will need to cover your head with a headscarf when you visit a mosque.

Don’t miss the chance and choose one of our Egypt Nile Cruise Packages, where you will learn about the ancient fascinating history.

Tipping on a Nile cruise

Is it customary to tip on a Nile cruise? As is common in the cruise world, it is customary, or rather expected, to tip on board. The staff on the ship will do their best to make the stay of their guests as pleasant as possible, and are therefore happy to receive the tip in appreciation of this.

Is it obligatory to tip on board? You can never say that tipping is obligatory, but unfortunately, it has come to pass that the staff of the ships see tipping as a fixed part of their remuneration due to the low payments in Egypt. But as already mentioned, this is not mandatory and if you think at the end of the trip, which is very rarely the case, that the staff has not earned the tip, then tell the Reileiter and tell him the reason right away.

Who should I give the money to? The tour guide will come to you at the end of the trip and ask nicely and politely about the tip, which is collected from the guests and then distributed among the crew. It is therefore collected so that everyone gets something because the guests do not come into contact with all the staff on board. It would be possible to tip the bartender directly during the cruise, but in this case, it would be unfair to cooks or machinists you don’t usually meet.

How much should I tip? There are of course no exact figures as to how much you should pay, but about 5$ per day per person, for every adult in the family, is reasonable. If you think this amount is too much, imagine there are about 50 people on board to make sure you feel comfortable during the trip.

Must-See Sights on Your Luxury Nile Cruise

  • Temples of Karnak and Luxor: Karnak, the larger of the two, is a stunning showcase of preserved carvings, colossal statues, and ancient obelisks. Luxor Temple, beautifully illuminated at night, offers a magical experience with its rich history and architectural splendor.
  • Valley of the Kings: Home to the tombs of the pharaohs, including that of Tutankhamun, this ancient necropolis is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders. Each tomb reveals intricate hieroglyphics and exquisite artwork that have stood the test of time.
  • Temple of Hatshepsut: Dedicated to one of Egypt's most successful pharaohs, this temple is unique for its design and the story it tells through its reliefs.
  • Philae Temple: Located on an island, this temple dedicated to the goddess Isis is reached by a small boat, adding a sense of adventure and isolation. The temple is striking, especially during the sound and light show that brings its walls to life.
  • Temples of Edfu & Kom Ombo: Admire the incredibly well-preserved temple dedicated to the falcon god, Horus in Edfu. Then discover a unique dual temple of Kom Ombo dedicated to two powerful deities, Sobek and Haroeris.

Planning Your Dream Nile Adventure

  • Choosing the Right Time to Visit: The best time for a Nile cruise is between October and April, when the weather is cooler but sunny. This period avoids the scorching summer heat, making excursions more comfortable.
  • Selecting a Cruise Line: Look for a cruise that matches your style—whether it’s a ship offering a suite of luxury amenities or one that promises an intimate, boutique experience. Ensure they have expert guides who enhance the journey with their insights.
  • What to Pack: Bring light, breathable clothing for the day and warmer attire for cooler evenings. Don’t forget a good pair of walking shoes for tours. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are must-haves for protection against the intense sun.
  • Health and Safety: Prioritize your health by staying hydrated and using bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth. Travel insurance is highly recommended for unforeseen medical needs.
  • Cultural Considerations: Respect local customs by dressing modestly during onshore excursions. Also, learning a few basic Arabic phrases can go a long way in connecting with local people.

A Nile cruise is a magical and unforgettable experience that should be on everyone’s travel bucket list. It’s a journey that takes you back to the ancient world of Egypt, where you’ll see some of the world’s most iconic historical sites up close. From the Valley of the Kings to the Temple of Karnak, you’ll be transported to a world of mystery, intrigue, and wonder. And all while enjoying the comfort and luxury of a five-star hotel on water. Don’t miss out on this incredible adventure. Book your Nile cruise today and experience the magic for yourself.

Where do Nile cruises depart from?

Nile cruises typically depart from two main cities in Egypt: Luxor and Aswan. Luxor is located in southern Egypt and is home to some of the most impressive ancient Egyptian temples and tombs. Aswan, also located in southern Egypt, is known for its scenic beauty and is the gateway to the temples of Abu Simbel. Some Nile cruises also offer round-trip itineraries that depart from and return to Cairo, the capital of Egypt. However, most Nile cruises follow the traditional route between Luxor and Aswan.

What are the stops on the Nile cruise?

The stops on a Nile cruise may vary depending on the length of the cruise and the specific itinerary. However, most Nile cruises follow a similar route, including stops at some of Egypt’s most iconic historical sites. Here are some of the typical stops on a Nile cruise:

  • Luxor: The ancient city of Luxor is often the starting point for a Nile cruise. Here, you can explore the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Karnak, and the Temple of Luxor.
  • Esna: This small town is known for its well-preserved Temple of Khnum, dedicated to the ram-headed god of the Nile.
  • Edfu: Here, you can visit the Temple of Horus, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt.
  • Kom Ombo: This temple is unique in that it is dedicated to two gods: Sobek, the crocodile-headed god, and Horus, the falcon-headed god.
  • Aswan: The final stop on most Nile cruises, Aswan is home to the Temple of Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the High Dam. It is also the gateway to the temples of Abu Simbel.

These are just some of the typical stops on a Nile cruise. Depending on the itinerary, you may visit other sites, such as the Nubian village or the Temple of Hatshepsut.

Is Egypt a safe destination to Visit?

Egypt is generally considered a safe destination for tourists to visit. The country relies heavily on tourism, and the government has taken extensive measures to ensure the safety of tourists. There are police checkpoints throughout the country, particularly in tourist areas, and security measures are in place at airports, hotels, and major tourist sites.

As with any travel destination, it’s always wise to exercise caution and take commonsense safety precautions. It is advised to avoid large crowds, especially during demonstrations or protests, and always to remain alert and aware of your surroundings. It is also recommended that you follow the advice of your tour guide or travel operator and check with your embassy or consulate for any travel tips before your trip.

Overall, as long as you take the necessary precautions, Egypt is a safe and welcoming destination that offers a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty for visitors to explore and enjoy.

What is the best time to visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April, during the country’s mild winter. The temperatures are pleasant during the day, ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit (about 18-30 degrees Celsius), and more relaxed at night. This is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

Visiting Egypt from May to September can be a good option if you prefer to avoid crowds and endure hotter temperatures. Temperatures during this time can reach up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or higher, but this is also the low season so you may find better deals on tours and accommodations.

It’s also important to note that Ramadan, the month-long Islamic holiday of fasting and prayer, can affect travel to Egypt. During Ramadan, many businesses and tourist sites have reduced hours or may be closed altogether. The dates of Ramadan change each year based on the Islamic calendar, so it’s essential to check the dates before planning your trip.

In summary, the best time to visit Egypt is during the winter season, between October and April, but if you don’t mind the heat and want to avoid the crowds, visiting during the summer months can also be a good option.

Tipping or Baksheesh in Egypt

Tipping, or baksheesh, is a common practice in Egypt and is considered a way to show appreciation for good service. It’s important to note that while tipping is not mandatory, it is expected in many situations, and it’s a good idea to carry small bills and change for this purpose.

Here are some standard tipping practices in Egypt:

  • Tour guides: Tipping your tour guide at the end of your tour is customary. The amount will depend on the length of the tour and the level of service provided, but a good rule of thumb is around 10-20% of the total cost of the tour.
  • Hotel staff: Tipping hotel staff, such as bellhops and housekeeping, is familiar. A small tip of 10-20 Egyptian pounds per day is appropriate.
  • Drivers: If you hire a driver, it’s customary to tip them at the end of your trip. The amount will depend on the length of the journey and the level of service provided, but a good rule of thumb is around 50-100 Egyptian pounds per day.
  • Restaurants: It’s common to leave a tip of around 10-15% of the total bill at restaurants. Some restaurants may include a service charge on the bill, so check before tipping.

In summary, tipping or baksheesh is a common practice in Egypt, and it’s important to have small bills and changes on hand. The amount to tip will depend on the service provided. Still, as a general rule, a tip of 10-20% of the total cost is appropriate for tours and restaurants, while smaller tips of 10-20 Egyptian pounds per day are appropriate for hotel staff and drivers.

What are the best places to visit in Egypt?

What to bring with you on a trip to Egypt?

When planning a trip to Egypt, it’s important to pack the right items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some things to consider bringing with you:

Sunscreen: Egypt is a desert country, and the sun can be intense, so it’s important to pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin.

Comfortable walking shoes: Many of Egypt’s top attractions involve a lot of walking, so make sure you bring comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain.

Lightweight clothing: Egypt can be hot, so pack light clothing from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Packing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees is also a good idea, particularly if you plan to visit religious sites.

Scarf or shawl: Women visiting Egypt may want to bring a scarf or shawl to cover their heads when entering mosques or other religious sites.

Water bottle: Staying hydrated is important in Egypt’s hot climate, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day.

Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be a problem in some regions of Egypt, particularly during the summer, so pack insect repellent to keep them at bay.

Camera: Egypt is a country full of fantastic photo opportunities, so bring a camera to capture all the incredible sights.

Power adapter: Egypt uses European-style power sockets, so if you’re coming from outside Europe, you’ll need to bring a power adapter to charge your electronic devices.

Packaging these essential items will prepare you for a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Egypt.

Advices for women while traveling to Egypt

Traveling as a woman in Egypt can be a rewarding and exciting experience, but it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and comfort. Here are some tips for women traveling to Egypt:

Dress conservatively: Egypt is a Muslim country, and it’s important to respect local customs and dress conservatively. It’s a good idea to cover your shoulders and knees when in public places, especially when visiting mosques or other religious sites.

Avoid walking alone at night: It’s best to avoid walking alone at night, especially in quiet or poorly-lit areas. Instead, take a taxi or use a ride-hailing app to get around.

Use a guide or tour group: Using a guide or tour group can be a good idea, especially if you’re traveling alone. This can help you navigate local customs and culture, and can provide an extra layer of safety.

Be cautious with alcohol: Drinking alcohol in public is prohibited in Egypt, and it’s important to be cautious with alcohol consumption. Stick to drinking in licensed bars and restaurants, and avoid getting drunk in public.

Be aware of your surroundings: It’s always important to be aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling in a new place. Be cautious of pickpockets, scams, and other potential dangers, and trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Research local customs and culture: Researching local customs and culture can help you better understand the country and avoid inadvertently offending locals. For example, it’s important to remove your shoes when entering a mosque, and to avoid physical contact with people of the opposite sex in public.

By following these tips and being aware of local customs and culture, women can have a safe and enjoyable experience traveling in Egypt.

Besides Khnum, the temple was dedicated to several other deities, the most prominent of whom were Neith and Heka. This was the ram god that was worshipped throughout this area and who fashioned mankind from mud of the Nile on his potter’s wheel. Overnight on board

Enjoy breakfast and the views as you sail towards Gebel el Silsila where the sandstone for the temples of Southern Egypt was quarried. The great Stele of Akhenaten came from here and it is thought that 3000 labourers produced the quarried stone that built the Ramesseum. Sail on towards Kom Ombo stopping overnight at a quiet island location.

Today we visit the temple of Kom Ombo dedicated to the Gods Haroreris and Sobek, the crocodile god. Then we will continue to sail to Aswan. Upon arrival you will be going on a tour to visit the High Dam passing by the old dam of Aswan, then take a motorboat to cross the Nile to visit one of the most beautiful temples in Egypt ISIS temple built on the Philea Island. By Sunset enjoy sailing on the Nile on Felucca boat around the Botanical garden and the mausoleum of the AGH KHAN. Overnight on board. (Evening optional tour) to go to the Sound and Light show at Philae Temple

In the morning there will be time if you wish to visit Abu Simbel Temple (Optional Tour). Enjoy your lunch while we head back to Esna.

Enjoy a relaxing day on-board , upon arrival to Luxor in the afternoon you will be taken to visit the largest temple in Egypt, the magnificent Karnak temple. The complex is a vast open-air museum and the largest ancient religious site in the world. You will then go onto Luxor temple which was dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun, Mut, and Chons and was built during the New Kingdom. Overnight on board. (Evening optional tour) to go to the Sound and Light show at Karnak temples

(Optional tour) early morning Balloon Ride over the west bank! After breakfast, you will visit the west bank of Luxor, including a special visit to the house of Howard Carter and the newly opened replica of Tutankhamun’s tomb which has been painstakingly reproduced to protect the original, at risk of damage from increased humidity levels caused by visitors. A small Nile boat cruise holiday making a big difference.

We always have a picture in mind that a Nile Cruise down the Nile will be as Agatha Christies “Death on the Nile”, this sedate turn of the century fashion. However the reality is Nile cruises are a big business in Egypt, meaning big heartless cruise boats where afternoon tea was served from urn’s with dry pieces of industrial Madeira cake! This impression was to form part of a very important family decision – to build a genuine original styled Nile sailing boat.

Dahabiya Dream Construction Story

We wanted to combine a vision of business growth along with ethical employment practises and community involvement.  The building of Dahabiya Dream started in March 2009 and every care was taken over the build and finish of this boat to ensure it is as authentic as it can be and was completed in October 2010. Since that day we have continued building on that idea and creating an on going success.

The dahabiya construction was hand built using centuries old traditional working methods. We used only local workers in the build of this boat and by doing so have supported the local working community and protected the environment by limiting the use of carbon emitting machinery work.

“Dahabiya Dream” an Authentic Sailing boat

The careful and thoughtful finish by local craftsmen can be seen in the hand made furniture, hand sewn sails and furnishings all over the boat. Every effort has been made to create what is the most genuine and beautiful Dahabiya on the Nile.  A true sail boat, Dahabiya Dream is not powered by engines which means that there is no vibration or noise to disturb your peaceful experience on the Nile. Dahabiya Dream has luxurious accommodation with its 6 cabins all themed after great explorers of the time. Howard Carter, Amelia Edwards, Giovanni Belzoni, Jean Francois Champollion, William Flinders Petrie and Auguste Mariette. Your Dahabiya team are fully trained and experts in making your holiday as special as it can be. Their priority is your safety and comfort and you have the opportunity to meet them all, enjoy our qualified chef’s fantastic cuisine, and learn more about Egypt.

  Community Involv ement

small luxury nile cruises

We carefully choose our projects to ensure it helps the most needy and where possible enables people to improve their own lives.

  • Actively encouraging women in employment our operations manager in Egypt is a lady who herself has developed a network of both women and men providing all the services and purchases we need.
  • We have one widow who went into a deep depression on the death of her husband and we supported the family while she could not work specifically to ensure the children remained in school. As she has improved we have encouraged her back to working their small holding and she now supplies the boat with all our organic eggs and ducks.
  • We support a very needy family by employing the husband to provide transport for the goods to and from the boat.
  • We are keen for local children to complete their education and support another widow to ensure her five children stay at school rather than having to find work. We have given another young man a job aboard Dahabiya Dream on the condition he completes his higher education.
  • Alongside our sustainable projects we also select on a monthly basis people in great need and provide immediate help with food, clothes, medicines and paying for medical operations in some cases.

We are committed to continue and expand these worthwhile projects so thank you for your business which helps us to do this.

Cruises in Egypt

A Nile cruise is a relaxed and romantic way to visit the monuments of Ancient Egypt. Acting as floating hotels, the cruisers ply the river between Luxor and Aswan, stopping off twice a day at major monuments en route. Most boat trips last between three and seven nights and visit Aswan High Dam, the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple.

On an Audley tailor-made Egypt cruise you can choose to sail aboard a large, luxurious cruiser with a host of modern amenities, a traditional wooden dahabiya or a refurbished steamship. Though the smaller boats are more basic, they make up for this in character and visit sites that larger boats cannot access.

I just had to tell you about my recent Egypt trip with Vacations To Go Travel—it was absolutely incredible! Bassem, our guide, was amazing. He knew everything about Egypt and made every moment fascinating. Oh, and the Nile cruise was a highlight for sure! One suggestion I have is to consider including tips in the package—it would make things even smoother. Thanks again for an unforgettable experience! - Deanna

Egypt Adventure Tour

Egypt Adventure

My trip to Egypt was, by far, the most impactful trip I've ever taken. I learned so much--not only about the country's amazing history, but also about the amazing people--and left a piece of my heart behind. This was my first group trip, and I could not have imagined 11 more wonderful people to spend my days and nights with. However, the trip exceeded my expectations due to our incredible tour guide, Mohamed Ebrahim. Mo was THE ABSOLUTE BEST. He was organized, informative, patient, creative, and I know I speak for our entire group when I say that I can't even imagine taking this trip with another guide.

River Nile Story - 4 Days 5 stars Nile Cruise Aswan to Luxor with meals and Sightseeing Tour

River Nile Story - 4 Days 5 stars Nile Cruise Aswan to Luxor with meals and Sightseeing

This was my first cruise experience, and honestly, I liked it much more than I thought I would. All the staff were just amazing. am a solo female traveller, and even if the crew was 100% men, I felt protected, cared for and perfecly respected at all times. The food was more than fine, I had a great choice each day, even if I am vegan. The main receptionist was super helpful: each day he would give me my schedule for the next day, he would point out details to check out in the next temple I would visit,.. I would have liked to stay longer in some of the temples, but I didn't feel rushed either, and I understand that the cruise is on a schedule for leaving and arriving to each port. The only negative thing about the cruise is that the boat pollutes the Nile quite a bit, and there are so many more boats. They all leave behind a trail of dirty water, oil and black smoke. Still, there is fish in the waters! I would totally recommend this cruise. For the animal lovers like me, I would recommend to indicate to your guide for the visit to the temple in Edfu that you want to get to the temple by tuc-tuc, not by horse carriage. Those poor horses have a terrible life, they eat only a third of what they should be eating and they are very poorly treated.

Nile Cruise 4 days 5 stars including internal flights

We had a fantastic guide that went out of his way to help us with anything and everything we needed. All of the tours were so informative and well worth the cost. The ship was quite dated and our bed a bit uncomfortable, but the staff was wonderful. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The food and entertainment were nothing to write home about, but that didn't matter as our days were packed full that we were tired/hungry enough to eat whatever was served, or skip entertainment to rest in our room.

4 Day - 3 Night Deluxe Nile Cruise Trip Aswan & Luxor Tour

4 Day - 3 Night Deluxe Nile Cruise Trip Aswan & Luxor

Wem man da Geld gibt ohne Quittung.

Egypt and it's ancient history is a must see. We had a great experience with flo tours. They were efficient in the booking process. Their tour manager in Egypt, Yassur, and our day guide in Cairo, Susie were exceptional. Yassur was always available and responded quickly to our needs and constantly perfected and improved our itinerary. And Susie not only was a knowledgeable guide, explaining and enhancing the history and culture of Cairo, but she was caring with some special needs of our group.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Nile

Mina was an incredible tour guide - so friendly and knowledgeable. He is such a kind hearted man who made our trip so special.
One of the good journeys I've taken, it exposed us to a language and culture quite distinct from Western norms. We also witnessed remarkable ancient sites, including Karnak Temple and Abu Simbel, and enjoyed thrilling activities like a hot air balloon ride and snorkeling in the Red Sea.
I booked a trip to Egypt last year in September 2023, Mina was out tour guide, he’s very helpful and kind. We celebrate the birthday of some travelers during our visit to Egypt, always with a cake or a dessert! We had a great time, the trip was amazing and very comfy thanks to him.
