The Last Fishing Trip

A breakout box office hit in Icelandic cinemas, The Last Fishing Trip follows six friends (featuring The County ’s Þorsteinn Bachmann) on their annual four-day fishing trip. Happy to leave their worries at home, their spirits are high, but the fact that a whole crate of wine bottles gets smashed as they arrive at their weekend cottage is a bad omen for the stay.

The fishing-for-salmon trip is really only a pretext to get away from their wives and to drink and eat in excess. But over the weekend, everything goes terribly wrong. The authority of their leader comes under question, and the filet mignon turns out to be horsemeat...

In a country where attitudes towards nudity are very relaxed, the men think nothing of stripping down to their birthday suit for an icy dip, but that is not the only thing laid bare as jealousies between the friends and where they have ended up in life come to the fore. Unable to escape themselves, what was supposed to be a cosy fishing trip, quickly goes downhill.

Directing duo Örn Marino Arnarson and Thorkell S. Hardarson put a The Hangover meets Sideways spin to this light-hearted comedy that pokes fun at men’s weekend-away rituals.

First review on Letterboxd!

This has a lot of middle-aged male nudity. Long scenes where everything is just kept in frame. Also the only time I remember seeing a character taking a dump outside and having the shot framed in such a way so you see the excrement exit his body. That should tell you alot about what kind of comedy this is.

I must admit though it was just so nice to get back into a movie theater after the Covid thing, sitting for two hours with friends and a (small) crowd of strangers to laugh - that we did just that. Laugh. Maybe there weren't a lot of deep insights into the human condition but we had fun.

"So it begins" The first film I've watched in 2021. Hopefully this year will be more successful than their fishing trip. Also, the film is pretty good and I would recommend it. Two of the actors are my uncles,I haven't even met one of them in person and I've already seen more of him than any nephew probably should.

Yep, this is how these fishing trips tend to go. Maybe you lie to yourselves and say you’ll catch some fish. Then just party away. Honestly it is pretty tame at delivering the downturns of the crew’s luck. We’re never invested in any one of them enough to feel any way when it all goes sideways. The comedy doesn’t land and it’s just the average drinking comedy we have all seen before. Sometimes it is good just to hang out with these folks, but nothing formally comes of it. Surely we would all rather watch this, than another Hangover, however.

• Six friends leave town for their annual four day fishing trip. Spirits are high and the are glad to escape the three W-s (Wifes - Work - Worries). At the same time, they are completely unable to escape themselves. Needless to say, the six friends manage yet again to ruin their life as they know it. The trip starts out in a relatively civilized manner, yet they all know it will go to Hell soon - like it always does. Over the course of four days they manage to ruin and resurrect their friendship. They manage to fish a little, drink a lot and misbehave in the wilderness as they cannot do in town. When they have reached rock bottom with their drunken antics, they dig a little deeper and manage to gather what is left of their souls and fishing gear in order to get back to the three W-s they left in town. Knowing they would do it all again next week if somebody would pay for their fishing license, repair their cars and give the wifes a solid alibi and excuse.
