In the normal Tempo Travellers too, push back seats are available. These seats make long journey comfortable. Since the Govt. levies luxury tax on vehicles fitted with such push back seats, 80% of the Tempo Travellers are fitted with fixed seats. For the vehicles that have push back seats the rates would be different since difference in tax would have to be borne by the customers making them costlier. Private bus fare to be increased, new rates to be announced later

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM :   Transport Minister Antony Raju on Saturday said the government has agreed in-principle to hike private bus fare. A final call will be taken after holding talks with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. 

“The fare will be increased, but we will decide later about when it should happen. The hike will be implemented without putting additional burden on passengers. Talks with private bus owners will continue,” Antony told reporters after a meeting with the owners. 

He said no final decision has been taken on the bus owners’ demand for fixing Rs 12 as minimum charge. He also said talks will be held with Justice Ramachandran, who heads the panel appointed to study issues in the state’s transport sector, to finalise the fare.

Discrepancies found in the rates in each fare stage in the previous order will be rectified when the new fares are announced. A subcommittee comprising three bus owners has been formed to hold further talks with the government. Private bus owners have demanded raising the minimum fare from Rs 8 to Rs 12, increasing per km fare to Rs 1, hiking minimum student concession to Rs 6 from Rs 1 and non-levy of tax during the pandemic period.

At present, minimum fare in private and KSRTC buses is Rs 8. During the pandemic, the government had hiked the minimum charge to Rs 10 to offset the losses. When the travel ban was lifted and more services were resumed, minimum fare was changed to `8. 

Following the government’s decision to increase the private bus fare, the autorickshaw taxi unions have also sought a fare hike. At present, the minimum fare is Rs 25 for auto rickshaws and Rs 175 for taxis.

Minimum charge for buses, autos hiked in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government on Wednesday gave the nod to hike the fares of buses, autos and taxis plying in the state.

The minimum charge for bus fares (for 2.5 km) has been hiked to Rs 10 from the present Rs 8, Transport Minister Antony Raju said.

For each additional kilometre, Re 1 will be charged instead of 90 paise.

Private bus owners had demanded increasing the minimum fare of the general public from Rs 8 to Rs 12 and the subsequent per kilometre charge to Rs 1.10 from 90 paise. But this was struck down by the government.

They had also wanted the minimum student fare to be increased to Rs 6 and were, therefore, dissatisfied with the government's decision.

The Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation's president, Sathyan, told PTI that earlier a commission had recommended an increase in student ticket fares as well as a cap on the age of students who can be granted the concession.

Therefore, it needs to be seen what the LDF intends to do by appointing another commission, he said and added that the bus owners will try to meet Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss their concerns as they had called off their indefinite stir on his assurance that fares would be hiked.

Auto, taxi fares also hiked

The LDF meeting also decided to increase auto, taxi and quadricycle fares.

The minimum auto charge has been increased from Rs 25 to Rs 30 (for 2 km).

For each additional kilometre, Rs 15 will be charged as against the existing Rs 12 per km.

The minimum charge for taxis below 1500cc was increased from Rs 175 to Rs 200 (5 km) and the kilometre charge from Rs 15 to Rs 18.

The minimum fare for taxis exceeding 1500 cc has been increased from Rs 200 to Rs 225 (5 km) and the kilometre fare from Rs 17 to Rs 20.

Minimum fares of quadricycles would be hiked from Rs 30 to Rs 35 and the per kilometre charge would be increased from Rs 12 to Rs 15, the minister said.

However, there will be no changes to the existing waiting and night travel charges, he added.

Earlier, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had given approval for a slew of revisions.

The minister said the hike in fares was inevitable in the face of soaring fuel prices.

The development comes on the back of recommendations submitted by the Justice Ramachandran Committee.

The government-appointed committee had held discussions thrice with all the concerned parties before making the recommendations.

It is not clear when the new rates will become effective.

Fare revision of auto, bus, taxi in Kerala approved by cabinet, see new rates

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala cabinet has approved the revision of the fares of state carriages, buses, taxis, quadricycles and autorickshaws in the state. The revised rates will come into effect starting from May 1. The minimum rate of ordinary/mofussil services including city/town/city circular/city shuttle will be raised from Rs 8 to Rs 10.

The rate of city fast service will be raised from Rs 10 to Rs 12, where as fast passenger, limited-stop fast passenger services from Rs 14 to Rs 15 and superfast services from Rs 20 to Rs 22.

The rates of express, super express, super air express, super deluxe/semi sleeper services, luxury/high-tech and air-conditioned services, single axle services, multi axle services, and low floor air-conditioned services will continue as the same.

The rate of low floor air-conditioned services was lowered from Rs 13 to Rs 10. The minimum rate of AC sleeper services was fixed as Rs 130.

It was decided in the cabinet meeting to appoint a commission to decide upon the travel fare of students.
