What to know about rome from our local guides.
“If you're visiting Rome for the first time and staying for a few days, you definitely should see the historic center , the important squares (like Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps ) the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon , the Vatican Museums (even better, do the Key Master’s Tour where you get to unlock the various rooms of the Vatican Museums together with the clavigero of the Vatican) and St. Peter's Basilica , Trastevere and of course the Colosseum . If you’re a returning visitor or are staying for more time, you should definitely include other museums such as the Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Altemps, Castel Sant'Angelo or even a day trip to Tivoli or the Castelli Romani area.”
“ Testaccio , where I actually live. It's basically 10 minutes away from all the most important tourist areas but without being touristy itself. There you can find the ‘locals’ and learn about their habits.” Federica, Rome guide since 2007
“My favourites are the church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, the Villa Borghese and the Theatre of Marcellus.” Andy, Rome guide since 2012
“I love Aventine Hill with its churches and gardens, the lesser-known part of Trastevere around Piazza dei Mercanti, Capitoline Hill, and the Roman Aqueducts.” Chiara, Rome guide since 1998
Rome is a fantastic city to explore with little ones in tow. For families looking to get an overview of Rome’s most iconic sights on a low-impact walking tour, our Welcome to Rome City Stroll is an excellent option that includes a gelato break.
Want to experience Rome's most iconic location in a family-friendly way? Kids of all ages will love the chance to step out onto the arena floor of the Colosseum just like the gladiators did!
Last but not least, don’t miss the chance to make your own homemade pasta or take a food tour in the family-friendly Testaccio neighborhood complete with freshly baked pastries, pizza, pasta, Roman-style panino sandwiches, and gelato for dessert! There’s no better way to introduce kids to Rome’s delicious cuisine.
Rome offers something for everyone no matter what time of year you visit. We polled our expert guides and found that there’s really no bad time of year to visit—it all depends on the experience you’re hoping to have!
“The best moments to visit Rome are spring and autumn because of the good weather, but I also suggest winter because of the peaceful moments that are easily found due to the low season.” Cristina T, Rome guide since 2011
“The Lungotevere is wonderful during July and August when the kiosks and restaurants by the river are open in the evening.” Andy, Rome guide since 2012
“I would prefer January and February because the city is very quiet and not busy as in summer and spring.” Flavia, Rome guide since 2016
Italy is famous for its food—but even in Rome, not all restaurants are created equal. So how can you tell the authentic spots from the tourist traps?
First, head away from the big attractions—at least a few blocks. That’s not to say there are absolutely no good restaurants near the Colosseum or the Trevi Fountain—but most eateries near major monuments don’t exactly cater to locals.
Next, pay no attention to places with staff outside inviting you to eat there, or with large photos of the food visible. Romans don’t need to be told where or what to eat!
Finally, if a place is crowded and full of the sounds of chatter in Italian, it’s likely a safe bet that you’re in a local spot. This might mean shifting your mealtimes a bit later than what you’re used to (most Romans won’t eat lunch or dinner until at least 1 and 8 pm respectively), but it’s well worth the wait.
Looking for a few specific recommendations to get you started! Here are a few of our guide team’s favorite restaurants in Rome.
“Go to Checco er Carrettiere for vintage Roman vibes in the heart of Trastevere, some of the best supplì, and an extensive wine list.” Mirko, Rome guide since 2015
“PopiPopi in Trastevere (where I live) is still a typical Roman restaurant where a lot of local families go. The food is great and the waiters are professional but also caring and warm with every client. Cul de Sac has an unusual menu with top quality products and wines. And Court Delicati is an excellent, authentic Asian restaurant in a city where good ethnic food may be harder to find than in other European capitals.” Chiara, Rome guide since 1998
There’s a lot to love about Rome, but one major plus is its central location in Italy, making it easy to travel all around the boot. A day trip to Tuscany makes a wonderful addition to your Italian holiday, with the opportunity to explore charming hillside villages and the famed Chianti wine region. Heading south, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii are well worth the trip, and for the wine lovers, a winery visit on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t soon forget.

Classical Italy
Good value for the money, however there are few areas that could use improvement. Optional excursions were published too late, by the published dates we have already added extra nights and accommodation's so could not take advantage of them. With hotels about 30 mins outside of tourist area, some kind of shuttle should have been provided- not everyone can 'survive' sunrise to sunset on the go and taxi in IT are expensive and unreliable. The common areas of hotels were nice, however the rooms (mainly shower and carpets) could really really use a good scrub down. Having said that, Gabbi, our chaperon during the trip was great, super informative and helpful-- having a link for tips after the trip would help as at the end of the trip exhaustion kicks in and remembering tipping it is hard.

Highlights of Italy
The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years
The Italian Dream
The provided tour was very enjoyable and well planned. The TourRadar team was very helpful and accommodating to our needs. We enjoyed our tour guides knowledge as well as the other tour guides in Venice and The Vatican. A special treat was the Skip-the-Line feature which gave our group quick access into the exhibits.

I was very pleased with everything and will consider booking again with Europamundo and TourRadar. I would only suggest that in July and August in Italy consideration be given to the heat and perhaps walking tours be conducted in the early evening taking advantage of the longer summer days.

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 8 days
Amazing !!!!lucy and Luigi was amazing too!
Italian Holiday (7 Days)
The ease of travel, opportunity to see different cities and a mind blowing amount of top tourist sites makes this guided tour a great option. There's one major miss on the trip...food and wine. When you think of Italy, you think of great pasta and wine, but the options included were lack luster. If the travel guide would provide details on the selected options it would have driven us to find alternative eats and drinks.
The Tuscan Dream
UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days
Food at Hotel in Florence, ravioli dinner, was not good. Hotel room tight, hard to move around.
Italian Discovery
We saw a lot of great places. The only reason not a five has to do with the information not received before the trip about optional side events offered by the tour such as the gondola ride. We scheduled several events on our own ahead of time since they were not included in the package. We would rather have gone with the group but didn't know about the possibility ahead of time. We also would have liked to have the same tour guide throughout the entire tour as well as the same group of people. The group kept changing and pick ups were complicated. Transportation back to the hotel was not a part of some of the tour and in our opinion should be included in the basic package. It is difficult to figure out bus/train systems in a foreign country and we should not have added expenses to be taken back to our hotels.
Rome City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights
It was a lot of fun! I definitely would go again.
- Walking Adventure
Rome, Assisi & Magical Umbria - Premium Adventure
This is a new itinerary and was a fabulous experience. A great way to get to the smaller hill towns in Umbria as well as the well known sites. Food and accommodation were fantastic.
La Dolce Vita Experience
Our trip to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Sorrento was great. The tour guides were very well organised and led three very good tours for us. Each tour was of a different theme and this made for an interesting few days. Our accommodation at the Grand Hotel Vesuvio was very comfortable, and the pool on a hot day was an added bonus. The staff were very nice and most helpful.
What people love about Rome Tours
Tour really amizing, the driver and tour guid, food and location was very good, but a first day and last day hotel accomodation is not good very small shower, the bed is like rocking, the last tour scheduled from vasilica to collesium there no travelling car and is not good for us to take a taxi by our own and some a taxi driver is not honest.

Massimo gave an insightful, humorous and non-forgettable tour. It was my first time in Rome and I could not have spent it better! Also great to skip the lines for the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
I recently had a tour at the Vatican and dome climb amazing experience, our guide was chiara and couldn’t of asked for a better guide, so friendly knowledgeable and enthusiastic and definitely made the day fun enjoyable and an incredible experience, I would highly recommend the company and chiara as a guide.
The best guide in Rome you can wish for. We spent with Chiara a beautiful day in the Vatican. She was absolutely the best, energetic, funny and knew all about everything. She answered all our questions with a smile. I have never experienced such an amazing tour of the city in my life. Thank you and we totally recommend.
We missed the start of the tour.but Roberta let us join later, and allowed us to come back the next day to see the bits we missed..our guide massimo was super.funny and very friendly...not disappointed.
Our tour guide was Luigi, he was great. From the start Luigi made it a point to connect with each person, from learning our names to speaking with us each. You could see his passion for what he was telling us about each room and the contents. He gave us information and explain it in a way that it made sense.

More about rome, italy, why visit rome, historic highlights.
Just walking the city streets will give you a sense of the historic power and prowess of Rome. From the imposing Colosseum to the ancient Pantheon, much of what’s found in Italy’s capital serves as an homage to its one-time status as the caput mundi (capital of the world). Here are some iconic highlights you should look forward to when in Rome.
Witness a mysterious and ancient marvel of Rome, the Pantheon. Tour the pagan-temple-turned-church to learn how this historic monument has remained preserved despite raids and regime changes. Be sure to head to the most fascinating section of the monument’s interior the center of the Pantheon and raise your gaze to see the giant “eye” or oculus.
No trip to Rome would be complete without visiting one of its iconic structures: the Colosseum. Imagine the epic battles of gladiators as you walk along the interior of the stately amphitheater. See where Julius Caesar once was entertained by extravagant royal games as he sat with fellow dignitaries. This is truly a thrilling site not to be missed.
St. Peter's Basilica
Head to Rome’s Vatican City to see one of the most magnificent churches in Europe, and arguably the world, St. Peter’s Basilica. Explore this hallowed site known to most Catholics as the pinnacle symbol of faith. Inside, you will discover Michelangelo’s Pietà, the glorious dome, and Bernini’s ceremonial baldachin over the papal altar. Keep in mind that a dress code will be enforced and that no shorts, miniskirts, or bare shoulders are allowed.
Piazza Navona
Feel the pulse of Rome as you walk through the bustling Piazza Navona. Stroll through this main square to see street performers, artisans, fellow tourists, and locals all mingling about. We recommend visiting the nearby Pamphili Palace and Church of Sant’Agnese In Agone after exploring this popular Piazza.
Attractions
The beauty of Rome is only amplified by the many attractions the city offers. Whether you’re a history buff, art aficionado, or yearn to soak up Rome’s distinct culture, you’ll understand why this particular European capital has captivated visitors for centuries. Here are some attractions that have been known to delight even the most discerning guest.
Roman Forum
Explore the haunting ruins that remain of the Roman Forum, the former cultural, political, and economic hub of the Roman Empire. While the landmark has been touched by the hands of time, remnants like the stately columns and various arches illustrate the Forum’s one-time regal glory. This is a fascinating way to transport yourself back to ancient Rome.
Circus Maximus
Explore the massive venue known for entertaining the masses of ancient Rome: Circus Maximus. Early Romans flocked to this larger-than-life stadium to watch chariot races, gladiator fights, beast hunts, and occasional executions. Our local experts say that you may be able to catch an outdoor concert here with the right timing.
National Roman Museum
Located within a gorgeous 15th-century palazzo you’ll find some of the most magnificent classical sculptures at this museum. In addition to many notable sculptures, you’ll see a wide array of ancient artifacts unearthed during various excavations of Rome.
Tiber River
While most associate Italy’s famous body of water with the Grand Canal of Venice, the Tiber River is just as beautiful and historic in Rome. Take a scenic river cruise and watch the sun paint the façade of Saint Peter’s Basilica. If you prefer to stay on land, admire the river while crossing Sant’Angelo Bridge. While in Rome, we recommend you take the time to experience this significant natural site.
While you may hear there’s no such thing as one kind of “Italian food,” all of the regional fare you’ll sample in Rome is delicious. The culinary traditions here stem from “peasant cuisine,” with ingredients and recipes that are kept fairly simple. You’ll certainly want to try some of these signature Italian foods in Rome.
Take one bite into a wonderfully thin piece of Roman pizza and you’ll forget that it was actually invented in Naples. Unlike the thick, deep-dish pizzas of Chicago, Rome is known for its exceptionally thin crusts. You’ll have to save your hankering for a fresh slice until dinnertime, though; wood fired pizzas only are served in the evening.
Rome’s pasta dishes are prepared simply and enjoyed immensely. From the creamy Cacio e Pepe to the tomato-laced Amatriciana, you’ll be fueled by enough carbs to walk the Spanish Steps with ease.
Lighter than American ice cream but creamier than a fruit sorbet, gelato is a treat you need to scoop up while in Rome. Whether you’re partial to chocolate or crave something a bit more tropical, the city is ripe with sweet options.
You’ve likely never had an artichoke quite like a Roman-prepared artichoke. These vegetables are so revered they’ve been given protected-origin status (PGI, or Protected Geographical Indication) by the European Union. We recommend ordering the deep-fried artichokes made popular by Roman Jews; you’ll be amazed that something so healthy can taste so good.

"There are so many wow moments in Rome and you've really got to see all the ancient masterpieces with your own eyes to believe it. After hopping around all the icons, don't forget to take a step back with a gelato in hand and embrace 'la dolce far niente' - the sweetness of doing nothing."
Travel Director
Visit the famous Colosseum and see Circus Maximus
You’ll travel back in time on your Rome tour when we take you on a sightseeing tour of the city’s ancient wonders with your Local Specialist. Visit the mighty Colosseum and wander the historic walls of this ancient amphitheater, and see the Circus Maximus, where you can still imagine the thrilling chariot races and thousands of cheering spectators.
Visit St. Peter's Basilica
You’ll get to tick off a whole new country when we cross over to Vatican City in Rome. The world’s smallest independent state is the home of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope), along with St. Peter’s Basilica, the famous Renaissance church said to be the burial site of Apostle Saint Peter, where you can marvel at Michelangelo's Pietà, a sculpted marble masterpiece.
Admire the Sistine Chapel
The treasures of the Vatican just keep on rolling on our Rome trips, and we’ll take you on a tour to the iconic Sistine Chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope. We’ll even arrange priority access to the Vatican Museums, so you can gaze up at Michelangelo's spectacular frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel when it’s less crowded.
Clamber up the Spanish Steps
This monumental stairway is set in the heart of one of Rome’s swankiest neighborhoods, and you’ll pass by stunning churches, lavish hotels and the famous Trevi Fountain before arriving at the Spanish Steps, built back in 1723 and made extra famous by Audrey Hepburn in the film Roman Holiday. Wander up the stairs and be sure to snap some special photos.
Take a tour of Castel Gandolfo
We’ll take you on a spiritual journey to Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the Pope. You’ll get to visit the 17th-century Apostolic Palace which was opened as a museum by Pope Francis and see the beautiful gardens, walking along the same paths as many Popes throughout the centuries. We’ll even enjoy lunch in these stunning surroundings.
Our top 5 things to do in Rome
Our Rome tours will take you on a bellissimo journey to all the famous Rome attractions you can’t miss, from the Circus Maximus to the Sistine Chapel.
Castel Sant'Angelo
Originally built as a tomb for Emperor Hadrian back in the year 135, Castel Sant'Angelo has since been used as a prison, fortress and castle by the Popes and today it’s a fascinating museum where you can wander the halls lined with stunning Renaissance frescoes and stop by the terrace for panoramic views over Rome.
The Pantheon is one of the most breathtaking buildings in Rome and you’ll get to discover it with your Local Specialist. Built almost 2,000 years ago, it’s the best-preserved Roman temple in the world, and we’re sure you’ll agree with Michelangelo who once said the Pantheon looks more like the work of angels, not humans.
Museo Nazionale Romano
You can’t miss visiting the national museum of this ancient city, and you’ll love exploring this superb collection of classical art, archeological artifacts and treasures of the Renaissance. See the gorgeous frescoes and mosaics, thousand-year-old jewelry, 2nd-century bronze statues, and even mummified remains dating back to the Roman Empire.
Best museums in Rome
When you travel Rome with Trafalgar, we’ll show you around all the timeless Rome museums, from the ancient Pantheon to the Mausoleum of Hadrian.
Cacio e Pepe
Made with only four ingredients, cacio e pepe is the ultimate pasta dish of Rome. The cacio (sheep’s milk cheese), pepe (black pepper), and cheese (ideally Pecorino and Parmesan), meld with the pasta to create a rich, creamy sauce that is utterly blissful. Once a simple shepherd’s dish, cacio e pepe is now the most elegant pasta dish you’ll ever taste.
Pizza al Taglio
You’ll find some of the world’s best street food in Rome in the form of pizza al taglio. This delicious snack is baked in rectangular trays and sold by the slice in little cafés and hole-in-the-wall places. Topped with fresh ingredients like tomato sauce and olive oil, pizza al taglio is light, airy and totally delicious.
No trip to Rome is complete without a stop at traditional gelateria. More than just ice cream, this iconic Italian dessert is a fine art in Rome, made with seasonal flavors and the freshest natural ingredients. Just ask your Rome travel guide where to find the best gelato in town, and start your gelato tasting adventure through hundreds of bright and beautiful flavors!
Best food in Rome
We’ll take you on the Rome food tour of your dreams and show you all the best places to visit in Rome for the very best pasta, pizza, gelato and more.
What to pack for Rome
Italian phrasebook
You’ll find it easier to connect with the locals after learning a few phrases in their mother tongue, and you’ll love the feel of speaking this passionate language.
A fancy outfit
The Romans are famous for their chic and effortless dress sense, and if you’re looking to spend a night on the town, be sure to dress the part with your own elegant outfit.
Good walking shoes
One of the best parts of a Rome holiday is wandering the streets and piazzas, so bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes that can take on the cobblestone streets.
A blank journal
You’ll find pockets of inspiration at every turn in Rome, and a notebook will come in handy for collecting special memories, creative sketches and traditional Italian recipes.
Room in your suitcase
From the boutiques of Monti to the delicious market finds, be sure to leave room in your suitcase for all your special souvenirs, like a bottle of your favorite Roman wine.

19 Best Tours in Rome
By Maresa Manara and Erica Firpo
Vacation tours can be a divisive topic, particularly for people who feel passionately about exploring a city independently. But the truth of the matter is that exploring it with a local by your side will bring you to parts of it you might never find on your own. And no locals have as many stories to tell their city as the Romans. You'll find the most intellectual and personable tour guides to take you around vineyards, through olive groves, on vespa rides, through film studios, food markets, cemeteries, medieval churches, and the most iconic ancient sites. Without further delay, these are our picks for the very best Rome tours.

City Wonders: Ostia Antica Half-Day Tour from Rome Arrow
Ostia Antica is a historic seaside village an hour from Rome and these half-day tours of the coastal archaeological site are well-planned. Groups visit Ostia’s amphitheater, temples, historic baths, and ancient market. Guides seem to have real passion for the subject, talking visitors through the entire tour, peppering their commentary with anecdotes and fun facts. This is a slam-dunk for true history buffs who want to get deeper into the greater Rome area.
Elizabeth Lev: Rome's Historical Center, An All-You-Can-See Smorgasbord of Art Arrow
Elizabeth Lev is something else. Rome is her city, and this tour is her work of art. She has an incredible way of engaging with the history, the art, the monuments, and the stories. You'll find yourself wanting to spend all your time with her. The tour explores the ancient, medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art periods; and it visits sites like 13th century frescos above the church of Santa Cecilia and art collections behind the facades of the Spada palace. You'll be wowed by all of the layers of the city and how it feels like Rome has been hitting a string of never-ending home runs since antiquity.
Elizabeth Lev: Borrowed but Never Baroque, Bernini & 17th Century Rome Arrow
This tour of Elizabeth Lev's meets up outside the beautiful Piazza della Repubblica . Our group was tiny, but Liz will accommodate larger private groups. She is both an incredible academic brain and a witty storyteller. And her tour shows of the dramatic range of Baroque art and architecture within Rome. This tour is great for anyone who wants a deep dive into the city's Baroque history, and anyone who wants to appreciate Rome in an experience that's not quite in the guide books.
LivItaly Tours: Vespa Sidecar Tour Arrow
The Vespa Sidecar tour is entirely private and can be customized for return visitors who may have already seen the highlights. It is not, though, a show-up-when-you-want activity. It can be organized for up to six participants, but you'll only be in a group if you choose to be. My tour was perfect because it was just me and the driver/guide Luca. As a licensed guide, he knows his history, is easy to understand, and is very friendly. He always has a plan, but is quick to change it at the first request. We talked Rome and food and went to all the right places, from big names to more under the radar finds.

Rome 500 Experience: The 7 Hidden Gems of Rome Tour in an Antique FIAT 500 Arrow
There's a lot of reasons to sign up for this tour through greater Rome, not least is that you get to drive yourself with the top down in a vintage Fiat 500. Another nice perk: Rome's traffic is seriously easier to deal with when traveling in convoy (the group can have up to 50 cars in it). And, as you will get your own car to drive, it can feel like a private tour, although groups are also organized by language, so communication shouldn't be a problem for anyone. But most importantly, you just look so much better behind the wheel of a classic Italian car.
Top Bike Rental & Tours: Ancient Appian Way, Catacombs, and Aqueducts Park Tour Arrow
This tour will take the better part of your day (it's six hours start to finish). But going by bike to these outer city sites —the old Appian Way via the ancient aqueduct—is the easiest and most entertaining way to see them. Plus you won't want to cut out early: it ends with wine and some nibbles in Caffarella Park, which is so expansive it feels like you're in the countryside even though it's smack in the middle of the greater city. Bikes feel brand new and the confidence of the tour guides will put any nervous riders at ease.
Rome Tram Tracks Tour Arrow
This tour is a rocking dance party on a vintage tram that rumbles through Rome. It lasts two hours, during which you'll cut up the dance floor, drink, and cheer as you roll past some of Rome's most iconic sites . This is really an evening activity for those who don't just want to go get dinner somewhere in town. The greatest part, however, may have been how the senior citizens on our ride managed to upstage all the thirty- and forty-year olds on the dance floor.
Casa Mia Tours: Rome Cinema & Food Arrow
Rome has a rich history of cinema, and while you could take any tour with any guide, there is nothing quite like seeing its cinematic history with Eleonora Baldwin, Cinecittà Studios veteran and granddaughter of famed director Vittorio de Sica, four-time Academy Award winner and father of Italian cinema. This tour is both Rome's history and Eleonora's story, and she is so passionate that it will make you want to spend all day with her, and all night watching films. There are only three requirements—a pair of comfy shoes, an empty stomach, and a reservation.
Non-Catholic Cemetery Tour Arrow
You should always visit the truly Roman neighborhood of Testaccio when in Rome, but this tour of its historic non-Catholic Cemetery gives you reason to stay in the area after you've hit its prime trattorias. It's a beautiful, unusually tranquil space, filled with bougainvillea and museum-worthy sculptures in the middle of the city. The informative guides will school you on the cemetery's 400-year history as you amble past the tombstones of Keats, Percy Shelly, and other famous expats.
Context Travel: Fall and Rise of Rome Arrow
This historical tour starts at a medieval church in San Clemente and ends at the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo. Its chronology spans from the Roman Empire's fall to the Renaissance's beginnings. The guide Philip was total pro. He's an archaeologist with a great sense of humor and passion for every site. He knew exactly what to show me and could even point out where to stand so I had the best understanding of the sights. People who enjoy Roman, religious, and art histories will love this tour. It's also a great opportunity for people who have already seen the main tourist attractions to see some gems off the beaten path.
The Roman Guy: Cocktail Bars in Rome, Evening Walking Tour Arrow
This English-speaking tour will take you to some of Rome's most popular bars, including Trastevere's Freni e Frizioni , with stop offs to major attractions along the way. Plus, company founders Sean and Brandon are always quick to offer tips on the best spots for gelato or pizza in the city as you pass by for that next negroni. It’s actually a fantastic way to experience life in Rome with locals—far more relaxing that spending time trying to avoid tourist traps.
Katie Parla: Vineyard Visit to Cantina Ribelà Arrow
Sommelier Maurizio di Franco meets you at your hotel and accompanies you via hired car to Cantina Ribelà while enchanting you with a bit of Lazio history and winemaking background on Ribelà. Maurizio is a certificated sommelier, and it doesn't hurt that he's also super charming. His love of wine is contagious, he tells great stories, and his patience is wonderful. At the winery you'll be struck be the natural beauty of the landscape, close as it is to a city as big as Rome.
LivItaly Tours: Virtual Reality Tour of the Colosseum and Domus Aurea Arrow

The exclusive private Out of Hours Good Morning Vatican tour must be booked months in advance and is subject to permission of the Vatican. You will be greeted by Vatican personnel and escorted through the complex by the Clavigero, holder of the 300 keys of the Vatican Museums. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it does begin quite early in the morning. At 6 a.m. you and no more than 19 others will accompany the Clavigero to open the doors of the Vatican Museums.
Johnny Madge: Olive Oil Tours Arrow
You'll have to trek well outside the city (close to an hour) to reach the olive groves in the Sabina country, but it's well worth the trip. Johnny Madge is an olive oil authority , judging competitions all over the world and this is his backyard. He clearly loves it, and that love is contagious. Tourees will learn to distinguish extra virgin olive oil from everything else and importantly that you do not drizzle oil on your food. You pour it. This is best for foodies who want to get out of the city and deep dive in Roman food.
Le Domus Romane di Palazzo Valentini: Multimedia Tour Arrow
The Domus Romane are ancient Roman villas and other structures, abandoned in antiquity, filled in with debris, and inadvertently used as foundations for Palazzo Valentini, a Renaissance palace turned government office building. They are now underground, obscured by buildings and pavement just beside Piazza Venezia. On this tour, in situ multimedia renderings recreate an Imperial Rome domus, as well as some aspects of Roman life. The guides are actual archaeologists, and the fact-checked audio is delivered cleanly. These language-specific multimedia tours are popular though, and must be booked in advance.
Tavole Romane Food Tours: The Rome Food Walking Tour Arrow
Think of Tavole Romane, the food-and-wine-focused walking tour of Rome, as getting access to the little black book of those who know the city's food scene best. Owners Gabriele and Silvia customize the tours based on the interests of each intimate group, which could mean wine bars in Trastevere or an aperitivo-heavy hop through the centro storico, led by somms, chefs, or another tapped in member of Rome's food scene.
Latteria Studio: Market to Table Arrow
This market tour and cooking class began with a wonderful walk through the market to Latteria Studios, a functional cooking studio and photo set. Alice, Rachel, and Carla, who head up the activities, are real professionals. They know everyone at the market, and they know all about food. Sitting at the table at the end of day fosters a real sense of community with what may have been a group of strangers from different countries and continents. You'll immerse yourself in Rome and make new friends at the same time.
Cinecittà Studios: VIP Tour Arrow
This is your chance to see the studio that was once home to Fellini and Leone. It's still a working studio though, so you'll need to follow the guide's itinerary to the letter. She will know about Cinecittà though: its history, and its film productions, and its famous alumni. Also, Cinecittà owns every set that was built on the lot. Master artisans created them all—ancient Rome, a 1940s submarine, and fantastical, imagined worlds. They perfectly accurate to their settings, as well as pristinely preserved.

Is It Worth Doing a Food Tour in Rome?
A food tour in Rome is absolutely worth doing ! Not only does it allow you to try authentic Italian food with a local if you’re short on time, but it also gives you a better understanding of the culture and history behind each dish.
Plus, it’s an excellent way to explore different areas of the city that you may not have otherwise visited! These tours are curated to introduce you to a variety of flavors, from classic dishes to local secrets, and are well worth the time and cost investment!
What is Famous in Rome as Far as Food?
Perhaps the most celebrated is pasta carbonara, a simple yet indulgent dish featuring eggs, Pecorino Romano cheese, cured pork, and black pepper. Equally renowned are Roman pizzas, particularly Pizza Bianca—a focaccia-style pizza that’s crispy on the outside and soft in the center.
Not to be missed are the succulent Saltimbocca alla Romana, veal cutlets wrapped in prosciutto and sage, and the delectable supplì, fried rice balls oozing with mozzarella. These dishes, along with artichokes alla Romana and cacio e pepe, among others, comprise the essence of Rome’s storied gastronomy.
What are the Best Foods to Eat in Rome?
When dining in Rome, it’s essential to indulge in the city’s signature dishes to truly experience its culinary culture. Some must-eat foods include:
- Cacio e Pepe: A minimalist yet mouthwatering pasta dish that perfectly balances the sharpness of Pecorino Romano with the bite of freshly cracked black pepper.
- Roman Artichokes (Carciofi alla Romana): These artichokes are braised with herbs and olive oil until they are tender and packed with flavor.
- Maritozzi: Delicately sweet buns filled with whipped cream, a classic Roman breakfast treat.
- Gelato: No visit to Rome is complete without sampling the rich, creamy goodness of authentic Italian gelato in a myriad of flavors.
- Tiramisu: This iconic Italian dessert, made with layer upon layer of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone cheese, is a sweet ending to any meal.
These foods represent a small fraction of Rome’s amazing cuisine, which is exactly why a food tour that provides you the opportunity to sample a lot of dishes instead of having to pay for full plates everywhere you go is such a great deal!
What is the Best Rome Food Tour?
The best food tour in Rome is undoubtedly the Rome Twilight Trastevere Food Tour with Eating Europe tour. This comprehensive 4-hour tour takes you through the charming Trastevere neighborhood where you’ll get to sample local foods like pizza, pasta, cured meats, and cheese while learning about the history of each dish and the city itself.
Rated as one of the top food tours in Rome by multiple travel websites, this tour offers an intimate experience with a small group size and provides 13 food samples across 7 local destinations!
Do You Tip on Meals in Rome?
Tipping is not mandatory in Rome, nor is it expected since the waitstaff do not rely on tips as a source of their wages . However, if you receive great service, you will notice that many people will round the bill up or leave a couple of euros on the table. It’s the polite thing to do, and we always do it.
Contrary to the United States where 15-20% gratuity is often expected since waitstaff are constantly waiting on you, Italians don’t typically leave a tip since their job is complete once they’ve delivered your beverage and meal.
It’s normal to have to wave down someone to pay your bill, so keep this in mind when dining in Rome.
What Should I Bring on a Roman Food Tour?
When attending a food tour, it’s a good idea to come prepared with the following items:
- Comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking a lot and Rome’s streets are less-than-ideal for heels, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
- Sun protection: Rome can get very hot and is often sunny in the summer months, so bring along sunscreen and a hat or sunglasses.
- Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial when exploring a new city, and many food tours will offer water, but it’s always best to bring your own refillable bottle (this LifeStraw Bottle is my favorite and always comes with me!)
- Cash for tipping: It’s not required to tip on food tours in Rome, but if your guide provides you with a great time then having some cash on hand to show your appreciation can be a kind gesture.
- An empty stomach: Make sure not to eat too much before the tour since you’ll want to leave room to try all the delicious dishes!
Do Rome Food Tours Include Wine Tastings?
Many food tours in Rome, Italy understand the importance of how a fine wine complements the culinary experience of Italian cuisine, and thus quite a few include tastings of select local wines.
However, not all tours include a wine tour as well, so if this is something you’re interested in then be sure to check out The Roman Food Tour in Trastevere with Free-Flowing Fine Wine !
How Long Are Food Tours in Rome Italy?
Most food tours in Rome last between 3-4 hours, depending on the tour you choose . Some may be longer or shorter, but this is generally enough time to experience a variety of dishes and explore different neighborhoods in the city.
Be prepared for plenty of walking and stopping at multiple restaurants, markets, and shops along the way! Overall, it’s a fun and delicious way to spend an afternoon or evening.
How Much Do Rome Food Tours Cost?
On average, Roman food tours can range from $50-$140 per person , although this varies depending on the type of tour, the number of tastings included, and any additional experiences or extras offered.
While it may seem expensive at first glance, keep in mind that a food tour typically includes multiple meals spread out over a few hours, so it’s actually a great value since you’ll get to taste between 5 to 10 different dishes that would otherwise cost between 15-30 euros each!

15 Very Best Things To Do In Rome, Italy
Rome is a special city! It’s a city brimming with history, Roman culture, gorgeous buildings around every corner and enough pasta and gelato to satisfy even the hungriest of appetites.
It doesn’t matter if it’s your first, second or zillionth time to the city, there are so many of the best things to do in Rome around each and every corner.
Now, one thing I quickly realised is that there’s always something I seemed to miss on a previous visit (it always happens with bigger cities), which is expected but also terrifying if you’re anything like me and want to experience every inch of a place.
Without hankering on about my deep-seated love for Italy, I wanted to share some of the best things to do in Rome. You’ll love the city.
What is Withlocals?
Imagine what Airbnb does for accommodation; this is what Withlocals does for experiences via their free app (or website). You can peruse the best things to do in Rome via some really cool tours. Best of all, they’re all arranged by locals, who genuinely want to share their love of Rome.
For me, the big selling point for choosing Withlocals is that it gives you the option to personalise your tour with the host themselves, meaning nothing is too set in stone and can be adapted to exactly what you want. No need for strict agendas or inflexible schedules, it’s all up to you. This way, you’ll get to see all the best things to do in Rome on a schedule that suits you.
Once you’ve decided on where you’re visiting, you can search for some of the most unique, fun tours that range from the exciting to the hidden nooks you might not normally think of seeing in the city. After all, who knows the city better than a local, am I right?
We particularly chose to explore Rome (again, back to that hankering love of Italy I have) with Withlocals due to how ginormous and somewhat overwhelming Rome can be. Honestly, every street corner seems to bring out another of the best things to do in Rome (which can be overwhelming) and so a local guide totally helped us prioritise better and make the most of our limited time in the city.
Withlocals does, however, have much more locals all across the world so it’s not just limited to Italy. I’m already eyeing this up our return to Bali in a few months.
Authentic Tours and the best things to do in Rome?
As we had a few days in Rome , we knew we wanted to experience some of the best things to do in Rome as efficiently as possible. Of course, I had it to include mountains of pasta and gelato, too. It sounds like a running joke but I swear I eat my weight in pasta whenever I visit Italy! #NoRegrets 🤣
After a little back and forth between myself and Yaya, we pinpointed two hosts and tours that had some amazing feedback from other travellers and cool things we wanted to try. 🍝
Driving the city in a retro Fiat 500
One thing I’d always wanted to do is to explore an Italian city in a totally retro Fiat 500. I’ve been obsessed with that car for the longest time so that tour pretty much stood out to me straight away. What Minis are to Britain, the Fiat 500’s are to Italy… it’s so dinky and such a cute car that we just had to book this tour (which you can see, here) . 🚙
Then, of course, there was the fact that our local guide, Emanuele, knew all the best things to do in Rome and the more hidden corners we might have easily bypassed.
Eating like a Roman
Our second tour was with Giulio , who promised to show us some of the best Roman spots for a scrumptious bite to eat – how could I resist. After his amazing tour (which you can see, here), I think I piled on an extra 5kg that I swear I won’t be shifting for a good few months. Yum! 🍕
How to get to and around Rome
So, there’s a number of ways to get to Rome (both internationally and within Italy itself). For instance, if you’re arriving by;
- Air: You’ll likely arrive into Fiumicino or Ciampino Airports with a short taxi or train/bus journey into Rome. From Fiumicino, it’s probably best to arrive by train or taxi and from Ciampino, there are direct buses and taxis to get you into the city.
- Train/bus: In my opinion, Italy has a relatively good train network that easily connects the main cities to the capital, Rome. It’s the same for buses, too .. though I personally find the trains more comfortable. If you’re in Florence, for instance, it’s really easy to grab your tickets through search and booking platforms like GoEuro that make it super easy to understand.
Anyway, before I ramble on anymore, take a look at some of the best things to do in Rome, below.
Best things to do in Rome
1.) Scale the heights of St. Peter’s Basilica
Technically not in Rome at all but the Vatican City! Though, no visit to experience the best things to do in Rome is complete without a trip to St. Peter’s Basilica.
One thing to note, due to heightened security, you’ll notice lots of queues to go through security (which can be quite tough during the midday heat of a Roman summer).
Also, entry Basilicascilica is free but if you want to scale to the top of the Duomo, you’ll need to pay around 6 Euro.
Don’t forget: Make sure to take cash with you, they don’t accept any type of card payment. 💰
2.) See the Roman Forum
The Roman Forum is the home to some of Rome’s most important historic ruins and the beating heart of the Roman Empire. Make sure you see the Temple of Vesta and the Temple of Saturn. Best of all, tickets to enter the Roman Forum are included in the price when you buy tickets to the Colosseum (which is opposite and possibly one the best things to do in Rome).
If you’re not visiting the Colosseum, you can still see the majority of the Roman Forum from Via Dei Fori Imperiali (road area) where you can get some pretty beautiful views totally for free.
3.) Visit the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum
The Sistine Chapel needs little introduction but it’s only one tiny part of the much larger Vatican Museum site. Spend a few hours wandering the grounds, see the world-famous The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo and discover the ornate sculptures that embellish every inch of this place.
Be warned, queues are HUGE, which, can be tough on a really hot summers day. ☀️
We booked our ticket online (with an allocated time slot given) and we didn’t have to queue at all. Not only did it save hours queuing, I didn’t have to risk getting sunstroke in that glaring Roman sun.
4.) Wander around the Colosseum
The Colosseum is one of Italy’s most iconic sites and arguably one of the best things to do in Rome!
Take a wander around this stunning Amphitheatre – you’ll be able to explore the inside grounds, climb to the upper levels and see the ground below the main arena floor itself.
Colosseum security and ticket queues are notorious in Rome. We tried to avoid some of these by arriving in the late afternoon and only queued around 10 minutes.
Just remember, you can actually buy tickets online before you go but if the Colosseum is at capacity (around 3,000 people), you’ll still need to wait.
5.) Climb the Spanish Steps
You can’t go to Rome without seeing the Spanish Step, can you?
If I’m honest, it wasn’t (in my opinion) one of the best things to do in Rome… controversial, I know!
But, to be honest, it’s so easy to visit if you’re already in the centre and well worth passing by when climbing to enjoy the beauty of Rome!
6.) Grab an Aperol Spritz in Piazza Navona
There’s nothing better than a chilled out afternoon, sipping an Aperol Spritz and enjoying one of Rome’s prettiest piazzas. Prices for food can be a little higher here, so you might want to hold your appetite for something a little more off the travellers’ trail. 🍹
Don’t forget to also see the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi and the Egyptian obelisk which are stunning.
7.) See the views from Altare della Patria
Altare Della Patria is one of the grandest monuments built in Rome. Constructed to honour Victor Emmanuel, this incredible site is well worth a gander at.
Right next to the Roman Forum and about 10 minutes stroll from the Trevi Fountain, plus you can now head to the top of the building (via a lift) to see some lovely views.
8.) Find the best Ice-cream in Rome
Now I pride myself on being able to devour mountains of delicious gelato so you can imagine my delight when our Withlocals tour taught us some of the best tips to spot good, authentic, Italian gelato , which I intend to spread as a gospel of gelato!
For good quality gelato, always look out for Pistachio ice-cream. The natural colour of Pistachio ice-cream should be a light brown rather than a bright or overly vibrant colour. Apparently, as pistachio nuts are quite expensive, some low-quality places will add additional colours to make up for a lack of pistachio… Which is never good and usually reflects badly on the quality of the rest of the ice cream.
Secondly, those mounds of ice cream that you see in glass cabinets aren’t always a great sign, either. Ice-cream shouldn’t naturally set thick enough to be ‘mounded’ high in containers. If the ice cream is presented in mounded trays, it’s likely that thickening additives have been included to stabilise it. The best, authentic, gelato will be kept in cylinders rather than overflowing tubs.
Make sure to visit Verde Pistacchio on Via Nazionale for some of the best I’ve ever tasted. It’s so good I ended up here for a breakfast of gelato on our last day in Rome… no judgement, please. Ha! 🍦

9.) Grab a wine, cheese and prosciutto at La Prosciutteria Trevi
One of the best things to do in Rome, after a day of exploring, is to visit La Prosciutteria Trevi.
This authentic little deli is one of the coolest places that our Withlocals tour took us to. Grab yourself a glass of wine and one of their cold cut meat, prosciutto and cheese boards that come with mountains of Olives. It’s a great grazing dish that’s perfect to have after a gallivant around the city. 🍷
10.) Peek through the Knights of Malta keyhole
You might know that the Vatican City is a different country that’s surrounded by the city of Rome but have you heard about the Knights of Malta on Aventine Hill?
This gorgeous place is still a sovereign entity that technically isn’t a part of Italy at all.
Although you might not be able to enter, take a peek through the keyhole to the building itself, your eyes will be immediately drawn to one of the best views of St. Peters Basilica! It really is a special spot.
11.) Explore the Pantheon
This historic Roman Temple is one of Rome’s most iconic converted sites. Now standing as a church, the Pantheon has been on this site for over 2,000 years.
Don’t forget to head inside to see the incredible domed ceilings. 🏛
12.) Enjoy the best views of Rome
Parco Savello or the Orange Garden is one pretty amazing viewpoint to see the city of Rome. We headed here with our Withlocals host where we got to see the sunset over the city itself.
It’s a great vantage point to enjoy – I just wished we’d brought some olives and a cheeky wine!
13.) Visit the oldest food market in the city
One of the best things about the historic Campo Dei Fiori is its food market. I swear this place is a foodie paradise. Filled to the brim with Italian products like truffle oil, fresh pasta and sauces, it’s a great place to fill up when those hunger pains kick in.
Make sure to grab some of the city’s famous cured hams from the family-owned, Antica Norcineria Viola. It’s the perfect place to stock up on some picnic supplies for Parco Savello at sunset.
14.) See the Trevi Fountain
The Trevi fountain is easily the cities most famous fountain, which was built almost 250 years ago. It’s hard to find a ‘sociable’ time when the Trevi Fountain is quiet from visitors but it’s still worth seeing. ⛲
Just make sure you don’t sit on the fountain edge… you WILL get a stern whistle blown at you!
15.) Eat up one of Rome’s oldest bakery
Baking in the centre of Rome for around 500 years, Forno di Campo de’ Fiori is the perfect stop for a yummy Pizza Bianca with sea salt – which is arguably one of Rome’s most common street foods.
If Pizza Bianco isn’t your thing, try a slice of the surprisingly yummy potato pizza dusted with fresh herbs. I was totally unsure at first. I mean, potato on pizza sounds overkill on the carbs but it really is so yummy. 🥖

Food Tour in Florence or Rome: Which is Better?
O ne of the first things most people think about when considering a trip to Italy is the food they’ll indulge in. Pasta, pizza, and prosciutto could be its own holy trinity of “P” foods that people look forward to in this well-visited European country. But should you take a food tour in Rome or Florence?
What are the nuisances of cuisine in each city and region? Do you need to choose between the two options, or simply take a food tour in one city or the other to understand Italy and its “Italian” food?
We share details of our experience in both cities, including if you need to do a tour in both locations or just one and what you will taste during each food tour. We’re also sharing our preferred tour operator (spoil alert: it’s Devour Tours ) and a review of the Rome food tour and Florence food tour.

Food tour in rome or florence: the verdict.
We signed up for a food tour in both cities during a trip to Italy, where we traveled from Rome to Florence, then ended our week-long trip in Milan before heading to Madrid, Spain.
We like to understand the food culture as early as possible during our vacation so we know what to order for the rest of the trip (and where to order it because food tour guides always recommend great food spots).
As such, we took a food tour in Rome on our second night there, which was the earliest available time to book during our trip. When we arrived in Florence a couple of days later, we immediately took a Florence food tour on our first night there.
Our verdict is that doing a tour in both cities was the right decision. We were so glad we did a food tour in Rome and a food tour in Florence because we learned wildly different information and experienced how different the food is in both cities through the tours, even though they are not geographically far from each other.
Also, it’s important to know that pizza, which originated in Naples, isn’t a focus of either food tour. So don’t expect to have an array of pizza varieties whatsoever during a Florence or Rome food tour! The tours dig deeper into Rome and Florence’s food culture and food experiences.
We also want to note that no matter the city we visit, if there is a Devour food tour option, we book it. It is our preferred food tour operator because they’re always amazing, including stellar guides, information, and locations. They’re reliable as the “best of the best,” and they support local businesses, which is a cause we can get behind.
Food Tour in Rome vs. Florence: Foods You Will Try
Both tours left us feeling very full! We had plenty to eat and drink on both the Rome Food Tour and the Florence food tour.
An overview of what to expect during a food tour in Rome includes:
- Local red and white wine, Prosecco, and a cocktail Spritz
- Cheeses and meats
- A special Rome street food item called Suppli
During our Rome food tour, two guests included a vegetarian and a non-alcohol drinker. The vegetarian guest was easily accommodated with a veggie option instead of meat. The man who didn’t drink alcohol was always offered an alternative, like a Coke or Fanta, wherever we went when we had wine or a cocktail instead.
Our Florence food tour included:
- Wine (including local red wine and dessert wine)
- Bruschettas, including one with a tomato spread and one with a truffle spread
- Various meats
- Florentine steak and potatoes
- Gelato
While some of the foods seem to overlap at a glance, we learned that the regional flavors and selections of the particular wines and cheeses, for example, were different from one tour to another.
As another example, we had meat during both tours. But we only learned about salami made with peppercorns versus salami made with fennel on our Florence tour. Our guide shared the historical importance of the spices for each meat.
Of course, the city and locations were different for our Rome food tour vs. the Florence food tour. In each city, our food guide shared information about the city, overall, and the neighborhood we were in. Naturally, we learned different information about the area in Rome versus Florence.
Devour Food Tours in Italy
As we previously mentioned, Devour is our preferred tour operator for food tours. We are so lucky they have tours in Italy in various cities. They also host tours in places like Paris, France , the United States (including California, Massachusetts, and NYC), and all over Spain .
They believe in supporting locally owned businesses during their food tours, keeping the group size small and intimate.
While the tours can accommodate a variety of allergies and dietary preferences (including for vegetarians), we do not recommend either Italy food tour for vegans. Italy, as a country, has a long way to go for veganism.
Rome Food Tour Review with Devour
We met our guide in the Treverstere neighborhood of Rome. It’s on the side of the Tiber River opposite the Colosseum and Vatican City, where we did the wonderful “ Pristine Sistine ” Walks tour earlier in the day. Walking there or taking a bus to that side of town is very easy if you’re not at a hotel in the neighborhood.
Locals flock to Treverstere to find great food. It is well known for its enotecas (wine bars), cocktail bars, and restaurants.
Our group was small, with just five people. The passion that our guide, Manuela, had for Rome and tourism shined through. She had been a flight attendant for years before pursuing a career as a tour guide in her home city, which she has been doing for about eight years.
Though it was raining, the tour was joyful and upbeat as we bounced around five or so destinations.
Rome Food Tour Food and Drink Locations
Out of respect for the tour, we will not spill the beans on the exact locations we visited. However, we will say that it was very clear that the businesses were all owned by locals who were making an honest living with their quality food and warm hospitality.
A favorite stop was a bar that has been owned by the same man since the 1960s. Marcello was at the register when we stopped by, sitting beneath an old menu sign above him.
The prices were still marked in Italian lira from before Italy joined the European Union. This stop was also a great time to try Campari or Aperol spritzes, an incredibly popular drink amongst Europeans.
Food-wise, it was so interesting to get some “suppli” at one of the most popular places in Rome. We learned that it’s a grab-and-go kind of food similar to arancini in Sicily, but with distinct Roman differences.
During our Devour food tour, eating it on the go was fun, as the Romans do. Dan and I would never have known about this food without the tour, including its history or where to order it.
We happily ate our share as we walked to the next food tour location, an enoteca where we learned about white and red wines and had delicious apertivos.
Book the Same Food Tour in Rome
We loved another food stop where we sat down to try three kinds of pasta local to Rome. They were all amazing! It was fun to sit at a family-owned restaurant and eat the dishes, which were served family-style.
Though we ate one of the two kinds of pasta in Rome the day before, we didn’t understand how it was made until our Rome food tour.
Manuela shared the simple “ingredient rules” that Romans follow when creating pasta dishes at home. She also shared a bit about proteins in the country and what locals consider food for at home and food to order at restaurants.
She explained some of the cultural aspects of eating meals out, including the times Roman Italians dine. It was all very educational.
We discovered that the same restaurant offers Devour cooking classes when a colleague of Manuela’s stopped by to say a quick hello as she walked through the restaurant to the kitchen. She was wearing her Devour cooking apron and was incredibly friendly and smiley!
Florence Food Tour Review with Devour
Our food tour was on the same side of the Arno River where we were staying. It was a 15-minute walk from our Airbnb to our food tour meeting point, on the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens side of town.
It’s a short walk across the river over the Ponte Vecchio to get to the meeting point if you’re staying near the Duomo or Palazzo Vecchio/Piazza della Signoria area.
That is also the side of Florence where the Accademia Gallery (where the David sculpture is) and the Uffizi Gallery are located. (We explored that area the day after our food tour during the fantastic “ Florence in a Day with David, Duomo, Uffizi & Walking Tour .”)
We met in front of the state of Cosimo Ridolfi in Piazza Santo Spirito, as our email confirmation instructed. Our guide, Antonio, was awaiting our arrival. Our group of ten people was eager to explore the Oltrarno area and try new foods.
Antonio shared a bit about the area we were standing in and Italy’s history before we started walking to our first food destination. He shared things about Italy’s formation as a nation and the Italian language we had never thought of before. It all tied into the Florence food tour we were about to take.
Florence Food Tour Food and Drink Locations
Again, we won’t get into the specifics of where we stopped out of respect for the tour and you, so you’ll have great surprises when you sign up for it.
But a favorite stop was a small apertivo bar, where Antonio remembers shopping for herbs with his parents as a child. The building has been in the owner’s family for multiple generations and had a former life as an herbal shop years ago.
Another hit of the tour was a famous “wine window” of Florence. It was even an item for one of the women on our tour to check off her Italy bucket list.
Because we were with a tour that had a reservation at the popular wine window, we were able to bypass the long line of people waiting for their turn. Such a perk to be on a well-organized food tour!
Book the Same Food Tour in Florence
These wine windows were recently resurrected and regained popularity during the pandemic. Antonio shared the history of the wine windows in Florence, which was not at all the reason we suspected they were invented!
We also loved stopping at a BBQ place. But it’s not at all like American BBQ. It’s just a place where they grill items inside on a special grill. Famously, the restaurant serves “Florentine Steak.” Trying this famous Florentine dish with other excited tourists anxious to dig in was thrilling.
Tasting the steak is part of what made it one of the top things to do in Florence .
Our dessert stop was for gelato on this tour, like it was during our food tour in Rome. But truthfully, you cannot escape gelato in Italy. It’s EVERYWHERE . And it was great to try different flavors in Florence and learn about one, in particular, that was a local favorite.
Rome and Florence Food Tours Conclusion
We recommend both food tours in both cities. We truly learned and ate different things on each tour. The breadth of knowledge we gained about Italy’s local cuisine, culture, and history through exploring Florence and Rome with experienced local guides was invaluable.
We advise signing up for both tours in advance (they often sell out weeks ahead of time, especially during peak travel seasons) and booking for a date as close to when you arrive in the city as possible.
That way, you will be able to eat subsequent meals with more knowledge of how the locals eat and order, and you can benefit from the restaurant recommendations from the Devour food tour guides.
