A lot of long-term male travelers just say ‘screw it’ and don’t shave their beards at all. It’s way easier if you’re on the road all the time. However, things don’t have to be like that. If you want to look good, just take an electric shaver with you, and you’re all set.

But not all electric razors are travel-friendly. that’s why in this article, we’ll:

Are Electric Razors Allowed on Planes?

According to the TSA , all types of electric razors are allowed on planes. People usually aren’t sure because most batteries on planes are highly restricted. However, regular disposable AA or AAA batteries ( which some razors use ) are allowed on planes without any restrictions, and only some lithium batteries are restricted. The types of lithium batteries that come with shavers are usually built-in and tiny, so they’re allowed both in checked luggage and hand luggage.

Step 1: Choose the Right Type of Electric Shaver

There are three main types of electric shavers. All have their advantages and disadvantages, so before you get an electric shaver for travel, you have to decide which type to get.

Electric Rotary Shavers

Rotary electric shavers usually have 2-4 blade heads, and each head has a rotating component inside. Each rotating component has a metallic cover with tiny holes meant for trapping your beard hair inside and cutting them. They’re better for people who don’t shave every day or have very thick hair, as they’ll easily cut longer hair. They work best when used in a circular motion. That said, rotary shavers won’t provide a particularly clean shave, they may cause some skin irritation, and they can’t be used for precise shaving styles ( mustaches, goatee, chin strips, mutton chops, e.t.c. ) because you won’t get a straight line with them.

Electric Foil Shavers

Foil shavers work similarly to rotary shavers, except the blades move quickly from side to side, instead of a circular motion. The ‘foil’ part refers to a small protective metal layer with holes on top of the blades, similar to what the rotary shavers have. They usually come with two to five blades, and the more blades you get, the cleaner shave you’ll get. Contrary to rotary razors, foil razors should be used in a straight line, not a circular motion. They result in a cleaner shave compared to rotary shavers and can make precise lines for mustaches. Foil shavers are better for people who shave every day because they work best with short beards and cause less skin irritation.

Electric Beard Trimmers (Clipper Shavers)

Beard trimmers, other called hair clippers, are similar to foil shavers, except they don’t have a protective metal layer on top. They usually come with one sharp blade that moves from side to side. They’ll work better for people who want an overall stubble because they don’t result in a clean shave. With different head attachments, you can regulate how long beard hair you want to keep. They’re also great for hair trimming. Compared to foil and rotary shavers, they cause the least skin irritation, because the blades don’t usually touch the skin at all.

Step 2: Which Shaver Is Better for Travel: Battery-Powered or Rechargeable?

If you’re getting an electric shaver for travel, you need to make sure that it isn’t bulky, and it’s easy to use abroad. The ease of use depends on how it’s powered, which is why we’ll look at all three types.

Battery-Powered (With AA or AAA Disposable Batteries)

Some electric shavers are powered by disposable batteries ( most commonly by two AA batteries. ) These are the easiest to use abroad because they don’t require any charging. Disposable AA and AAA batteries are allowed on planes , and you can get them in most convenience stores in any country. Two AA batteries will usually last for about one month of shaving if you’re shaving daily, so usually, having just two extra batteries will be enough for traveling. That said, battery-powered shavers are cheaper, less durable, and will result in slightly worse results. If you’re a guy who needs a super clean shave, we’d recommend getting a more expensive shaver with lithium-ion rechargeable batteries instead.

Rechargeable (With Lithium-Ion Batteries or Similar)

Most commonly, electric shavers come with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. This is the most popular type of razor and will provide the best possible results. Usually, they’ll work for about 30-60 minutes without requiring a recharge, which is enough for shorter trips.

That said, there are some things that you should watch out for before getting one for traveling. Make sure that it doesn’t come with a charging dock because these are too bulky/heavy to be used for traveling. Another important thing that you should check is that its dual voltage. Different countries may use different voltages, so make sure that it’s 110V-230V or 100V-240V because if you’d plug an American 110V razor in a European 220V socket, it would fry in seconds. And lastly, you have to make sure that the charger is compatible with the electric sockets in your destination country. Some countries use two flat prongs, and some use three round ones. It’s usually a smart idea to get one universal adapter that works worldwide for charging all of your electronics. To be honest, plug-in type shavers without any batteries have become almost absolute. If you still manage to find one, they can be used for traveling, but you should make sure that it’s dual voltage and that you have the appropriate adapter for using it in your destination.

Step 3: Other Things to Look out for Before Purchasing an Electric Shaver

• Is it made by a reputable brand? If you want your shaver to last a long time, make sure that it’s made by a reputable brand, like Braun, Philips, Panasonic, Remington, or Wahl. Other Chinese brands will be more affordable, but they usually won’t last that long.
• Is it easy to clean and waterproof? Preferably get a waterproof shaver that can be washed under running water. If not, make sure that at least the head is removable and easy to clean.
• Does it come with a travel lock? Some shavers come with protective covers for the on/off button, which ensures that your shaver won’t turn on in your luggage. Waking up the next morning to a shaver with a dead battery isn’t the best thing that could happen on vacation.
• Does it come with a warranty? Unless you’re getting an affordable razor from a Chinese brand, make sure that your electric razor comes with at least a two-year warranty.
• Is a protective headcover included? Most electric razors come with a plastic cover for protecting the blades. Using one every day at home is silly, but they’re great when you’re traveling because they protect the blades from getting blunt.
• Is razor oil included? To keep the blades sharp, you should apply special oil to the blades every now and then. Some do it after each shave, but generally, it’s fine to do it once every two weeks if shaving every day. If your shaver doesn’t come with razor oil, you should get one and apply it just before you leave on your vacation. The Oster Premium razor oil is a cheap and solid option.
• How much do the replacement blades cost? Quite often the replacement blades cost 80% of the total electric razor cost. Try to find a razor that has cheap replacement blades, because you’ll have to replace them roughly every 12 months for the best results. Also, we wouldn’t recommend getting cheaper non-original replacement blades from Chinese manufacturers, because they’ll usually result in cuts, irritated skin, and they’ll become blunt much quicker. Battery-Powered Travel Shavers (Regular AA or AAA batteries)

This razor is powered by two AA batteries, which means that you won’t have to worry about dual voltage chargers and travel adapters. People who used it said that the two batteries would last just over a month’s worth of shaving. In case they drain during your trip, it’s best to pack two additional AA batteries just in case.

The Norelco PQ208 comes with two rotary heads that move around, which means that they’ll access all the weird angles as well. The blades are also self-sharpening, which means that they’ll stay sharp without any assistance. That said, Philips recommends replacing them every year with brand new Philips HQ56 replacement heads .

Philips is probably the most popular electric razor brand, which means that they’ll honor their 2-year warranty if anything goes wrong. Also, they have a 45-day return policy, which is nice. And what’s even better, this razor is extremely cheap – it’s the cheapest option on this list.

Similar to the Philips Norelco, the Braun M90 also uses two AA batteries for power, which means that you won’t have to worry about charging it. People said that usually, the two batteries would last one or two months, depending on how frequently you’re using it.

Because this shaver uses a foil system, it will result in a slightly cleaner shave compared to the Philips Norelco. It’s powered by a lithium-ion battery, and one recharge lasts for about 40 minutes. That said, one really important detail is that this trimmer isn’t dual voltage . This means that it will work only in 110V countries, like the U.S., and if you plug it in elsewhere, you’ll fry it. Your beard brush needs to fit the style of beard that you have. If you have a thick beard and buy a brush with soft bristles, you’re going to find that it does nothing for your facial hair.

Buying a stiff bristled beard brush when you have a soft and thin beard, is just going to hurt and cause damage.

Bristles (Material, Length, Stiffness)

Easily the most important factor in choosing the best beard brush for you has to be the material, length, and stiffness of the bristles.

There are four bristle types most commonly used in beard brushes…

• Boar bristles , which are natural hair fibers harvested from wild boars. They are structurally similar to our own beard fibers, albeit stiffer and more durable. Boars bristles are considered the best material by many producers.
• Horsehair , which is also natural hairs that most commonly come from horsetail. These types of bristles are similar to boar bristles, but a bit softer and lighter in color.
• Synthetic fibers , which are man-made and usually consist of polymer or nylon fibers. These are not as good at distributing oil as natural bristles but do offer slightly better durability.
• Vegetal fibers , which are a new type of innovation in beard brushes, and most commonly sourced from cactus plants. These are almost exclusively sold to vegan beardsmen.

What should the bristle length be?

When it comes to the length of the bristles, you will want to get longer bristles if your beard is long, thick, and bushy (to reach the roots, obviously).

Someone with a short, trimmed, and a bit of a patchier beard will want to get a beard brush with shorter bristles since the reach doesn’t have to be that long and you want to utilize the full length of the bristle instead of just the tips.

What about the bristle stiffness?

This is hugely important, and most people get this wrong. Boar bristle brushes are usually labeled as; stiff, medium, or soft .

If your beard is thick and wiry, you need to go with a stiff. If your beard is of average thickness, the medium is likely the best fit, and if it’s patchy/thin, go with soft boar bristle, horsehair, or something called polymer bristles.

I wouldn’t recommend nylon bristles to anyone who cares about their beard, and if you’re a vegan whose main priority is reduced animal suffering, then obviously the vegetal bristles should be your choice.

Handle (Material, Size, Shape)

The only other thing we need to look for aside from bristles is obviously the handle (or lack thereof if that’s how you roll).

So what exactly do I mean with these?

Well, if you’re traveling a lot, you obviously don’t want a big handle on your beard brush to take up space. For travel purposes, round beard brushes with no handle are the best choice.

If your hands are on the smaller side, then choosing a big chunky oval-shaped beard brush is not ideal, as you won’t get a good grip on that and it will always feel weird to use.

As for beard size, if yours is big and long, you may want to get a brush with a large handle to give you more strength and grip.

Lastly, storage. This is basically the same as with traveling; if you’re dealing with lack of space, you may need a beard brush that is small and has no handle. If space is not an issue at all, then, by all means, get a handle that you most prefer.

Price (Value Vs. Quality)

Beard brushes are not really that expensive, and they tend to last for years when properly used and maintained.

Because of that, it would not be a smart move to choose the cheapest possible beard brush. You’d have to suffer from mediocre quality for years just to save a pretty penny for a while.

That 2$ beard brush from your local supermarket might look like a great deal, but it’s probably made from the cheapest synthetic bristles that cause static charge and beard split-ends , while the handle is the cheapest plastic you can imagine.

Because of the bristle stiffness, it will suit the men with medium to long beards, thick enough to handle some rough action on the face.

If you get this brush with a short and thin beard, I can guarantee that you will be disappointed, as it will be too rough for your facial hair.

I have been positively surprised with this beard brush from Seven Potions. Sure, the bristles felt a bit too stiff for me in the beginning, and I thought for a while that I might be only using it rarely as an exfoliator brush, but soon enough I noticed I was brushing with it almost daily.

After a few weeks of use, the bristles will loosen up quite nicely and still remain somewhat firm. I like this because it makes styling the beard really easy after you put in some beard oil and balm.

If your beard is big and bushy, you might want to skip this brush. The small bristle surface would make your beard brushing routine take ages, whilst the lack of handle means that you won’t have the same strength to brush with as you would with the BRD2 for example.

After three years of writing about grooming , I know that if you want to keep your facial hair in check, no matter the length or style, you’ll need a beard trimmer (not to be confused with an electric razor, which is the better pick for any clean shaven folks out there).

Here’s what separates the good trimmers from the great . The true best beard trimmers are multi-use: You can use them for your facial hair but also your nose and chest hair. You want one that’s lightweight enough to maneuver but with a battery pack sturdy enough so that it won’t stop mid-shave. (Professional barbers prefer to use a corded trimmer, as they’re using them all day and don’t want to have to stop to recharge. But for at-home use, as long as you’ve got enough battery life , cordless can work just as well — with a little added convenience.) I’ve also learned that you don’t have to spend a small fortune to find the right trimmer: Most of my picks are actually under $100 — any trimmers above that price have a standalone feature that makes them impossible to ignore.

You’ll see two brands dominate these recommendations: Philips and Wahl. This isn’t surprising — both brands have products for almost every type of beard need, and they’re relatively inexpensive. But I’ve also found some lesser-known picks that deserve a spot among those grooming favorites .

Before I get into my recommendations, I have some pearls of wisdom from the pros on how best to use any beard trimmer. Always cut your beard when it’s dry. “If you’re cutting it wet, you can’t really tell how long it is going to be when dry,” explains Mark Miguez, co-owner and barber at New York City’s Friend of a Barber. But once you’re done trimming, you should wash your face. As Rob Mac of Mildred New York told me, “Beard trimming is still shaving,” so you’ll likely have some stray hairs and stretched skin afterward that would benefit from a good rinse. Lastly, as with any other type of razor, clean your trimmer’s blade once you’re done (more on that below).

What we’re looking for

Corded versus cordless.

Professional barbers will usually opt for corded trimmers, because they won’t lose momentum as their battery life dwindles — a common issue for cordless trimmers. But I know that a cordless trimmer can be a more convenient option (especially if you’re someone who likes to shave in the shower), so I’ve included a mix of both trimmer types. For the cordless options, I’ve listed the battery life in minutes, so you know you’re getting enough.

Trimmers should be light and easy to maneuver, so you can reach those tough-to-trim spots, be as precise as possible, and not exhaust your wrist in the process. Compared to their stainless-steel cousins, plastic trimmers are usually the most lightweight option, though some people do just prefer a weighty, fancy-looking stainless-steel trimmer in their hand. No matter the trimmer you go for, you’ll find its weight listed below in ounces.

Buying a trimmer with sharp blades is really important, as shaving with a dull set of blades can feel like getting your beard hairs caught in a zipper and will leave split ends and ragged edges in their wake. If you’re on the lookout for blades that will last a long time, you’ll want a trimmer with self-sharpening blades. They use the friction created when shaving to sharpen themselves with each use, meaning that they’ll stay sharper for longer than a regular blade and don’t need to be replaced as frequently — saving you hassle and money. (Of the nine recommended trimmers on this list, only one doesn’t have self-sharpening blades — but our expert thinks its other features make it worth the hassle.)

Adjustable blades and blade guards make shaving simple; they help guide the trimmer and make sure the hair is cut evenly and at the right length. Blade guards come in different sizes and keep the trimmer at a certain distance from your face — depending on the length you’re aiming for. Adjustable blades have a similar effect but work by moving forward and backward using a lever on the side of the trimmer. When “open,” they act like a guard attachment that’s integrated into the trimmer blades, but they will usually only give you about 1.5 millimeters of added length. In addition to different-length blade guards, some trimmers will come with attachments for trimming nose and ear hair as well as attachments for trimming chest hair and pubic hair.

The Wahl Cordless Magic Clip is a product that I’ve come across in my reporting time and time again. I’ve awarded it the top spot on this list not just because it was the most-recommended trimmer (with seven endorsements) but because I know that it really works. When I asked a friend with sensitive skin — A.G. — and a fondness for tightly trimmed beards to test this model, he said the trimmer cut through his beard easily, and he was impressed by the range of guards that let him choose how close a shave he wanted. “I could also get the line at the top of my beard tight and neat,” he says.

As a beard trimmer, Murdock London’s Wood Smith says “it’s the top product to own if you want to re-create a barbershop experience in the comfort of your home.” Fellow expert Sam Buffa, founder of Fellow Barber , says that the self-sharpening blade stays sharper for longer (especially when compared to other options in this price range.) The cordless version is relatively light and the battery lasts for 100 minutes, but you can also get a corded version .

While Wahl was the favorite brand among the professionals I spoke to, it was Philips Norelco that received the most praise from regular bearded guys. (All of my grooming stories, from the best electric razors to the best razors for men , recommend at least one product from this line.) This divide checks out for barber David Kim, who tells us amateur cutters can “generally trust Philips Norelco’s more-affordable products to work well and maintain a neat beard, as long as they’re not trying to do something too complex or fancy.”

Of the many recommendations I got for Philips Norelco products, I’ve landed on the Philips Norelco 5500 as my favorite. I like that the 5500 trimmer has 40 length settings (double that of the old model), as well as three guard attachments so you can really trim to the precise length you’re after. It’s also the trimmer that my friend A.G. (with sensitive skin) uses to shape his beard twice a week. He likes the range of length settings (he uses the longest one to keep his mid-length beard neat and uniform.) He also appreciates the rubber grip that makes it easy to maneuver the trimmer. He says that it has a more than decent battery and is easy to clean with just a few swipes and taps after each use.

Best corded beard trimmer

When I asked Miguez how he keeps the famous beard of one of his clients (style writer David Coggins ) so fresh, he told us his most-trusted tool is Wahl’s corded Peanut Clipper. It’s cheaper than the Magic Clip, but that isn’t why he likes it: he finds his Wahl more reliably powerful than any cordless trimmer he’s tried, and finds the four guard attachments to be just the right amount for a no-fuss shave. It’s not the first time I’ve heard about this trimmer: The Peanut is also the favored beard trimmer of Strategist columnist Chris Black, who praised it because it’s “cheap, dependable, and fits in your designer Dopp kit perfectly.”

Beginners will appreciate a versatile trimmer like this pick from Panasonic. Its easy-to-use adjustment dial for different hair lengths is a standout. For a beginner, that means much less time fidgeting with the trimmer — this is especially helpful if your beard growth is patchy. If your skin is on the more sensitive side, Waldman recommends using a trimmer with wet and dry functions, which this one offers. The trick to not irritating sensitive skin is to soften your beard and lubricate your skin before using a trimmer, Waldman explains. After washing and moisturizing, you can “keep your beard area covered with a damp warm washcloth for about two minutes to further soften the hair,” he says. While the first Norelco I recommended is suited to a range of beard lengths, the 3000 series is great for guys who keep a shorter beard (or who prefer to keep a little scruff.) One man that’s been shaving with it for years is former Strategist senior editor Peter Martin — also a former Esquire grooming editor — keeps a shorter beard that’s typically more of a scruff. After wearing out his Gillette trimmer during quarantine, he bought this exceptionally affordable Philips trimmer on a “strong recommendation” from his brother-in-law. “I wish I’d switched to this a decade ago,” Martin says, explaining that it’s “so much easier to use” with sharp cutting blades that “never get stuck and clip all the hair in basically one pass.” He also appreciates that, unlike his old Gillette, this trimmer “came with nose and ear trimmers, which I pretend I don’t need.”

While Black says the cordless version of the Wahl Peanut will fit in a Dopp kit, if you’re looking for an even more affordable beard trimmer for travel, consider the OneBlade. Quilty-Harper uses it, and it made the cut on Soller’s list, too. “The small size, decent battery life, and punchy color make it just right for my Dopp kit ,” Soller wrote. Quilty-Harper adds that it can “get as close as a wet shave” (to wit, the OneBlade also made our list of expert-recommended electric razors ), with Soller writing that the gadget falls somewhere “between a traditional beard trimmer and a regular razor.” He adds: “Once you charge the handle and turn on the power, the blade’s rapid movements cut nearly as close as a regular disposable blade but without any fear of bleeding or ingrown hairs.”

Best beard trimmer for mustaches

This less-expensive trimmer for styling ‘staches comes recommended by barber Perry Petit-Beau , who says he “likes the finish and power of the blade.” He also says that while it comes with guards for properly trimming a beard, when used without a guard, you get an “exposed blade for outline detailing and a close shave.” Butler says that this closer T-shaped blade is great for styling mustaches, as it allows you to get into the nooks and crannies under the nose and around the corners of your mustache. “This will give you more control and potentially help you avoid cutting too much hair off of an area you are working in,” Butler says.

“Between barbershop appointments, the best thing you can do at home to maintain your beard is to keep your cheek lines and neckline neat,” Wood Smith told me. “And the Andis Slimline Pro is easily maneuverable to trim even hard-to-reach hairs on the neck.” “It’s going to get incredibly close, so professionals use it to create neat lines and then put the attachments on to trim the beard itself,” explains Karac Ruleau of Mott NYC. Miguez agrees, saying that while he wouldn’t use it as his main beard trimmer, it’s the first thing he picks up to keep the area around his clients’ ears and the backs of their necks clean. Albano, another expert who says the Slimline Pro is great for styling, adds that it is “super-light, super-sharp, and built to last.” And Mac, yet another Andis fan, told us he knows from experience that this product works on facial hair of all types and textures and holds its charge for a long time.

This trimmer is technically meant to be used all over your body, but Medium strategist Shaquille Cheris says he prefers to use this Hatteker trimmer to keep the edges of his beard in good shape between barbershop visits. Hatteker claims the product is fully waterproof and, in addition to cleaning its blades, encourages users to soak the beard trimmer itself under a faucet between uses. “It came with what felt like 15 components,” he says, “and it has a great motor compared to the Panasonic I was using before.”

The Best Beard Trimmer for You

CR volunteers tried out five popular beard trimmers from Braun, Philips Norelco, Remington, and Wahl. Here's what they had to say.

There’s nothing like a freshly trimmed beard to take you from scruffy to styling. But it isn’t always easy to get to the barber, especially if you need a last-minute trim before an important Zoom meeting, date, or social event. But when you have a beard trimmer at home, you can achieve that just-left-the-barber look even between visits.

To help you find the best beard trimmer for you, CR’s Consumer Experience & Usability Research team worked with 24 volunteers—sporting a variety of facial hair lengths, styles, and types—to evaluate five popular beard trimmers on the market today.

Before we get into the results of our evaluation, here’s what to expect when shopping for a beard trimmer and using one for the first time.

Beard Trimmer Basics

When shopping for a beard trimmer, it’s easy to get overwhelmed—there are many on the market. But Steven Wilson, the founder of All About Beards (at beards.org), a site founded in 1996 and dedicated to celebrating beards, says that “essentially, one should look for a beard trimmer that is easy to use, durable, and reliable.”

Blades are the most important part of a beard trimmer; look for a model with strong, sharp blades made of stainless steel or titanium—you should be able to find this information on the packaging, or in the product details online.

Depending on how you plan to use it, you may want to look for additional features. Someone who travels a lot, for example, may benefit from a travel lock—which prevents a trimmer from turning on while in transit—and a trimmer that supports universal voltage.

Box contents will vary across models, but generally, you can expect to receive the following materials:

• Beard trimmer unit
• Combs and trimmer/blade styles
• Attachments for ear, nose, and brow
• Clipper oil and cleaning brush
• Storage case or pouch
• Charging/power cord

Using a Beard Trimmer

A beard is a work of craftsmanship—you don’t get a great chin coif by just letting it grow.

“A typical set of beard care and grooming products should be used along with a beard trimmer,” Wilson says. “These may include a good comb or brush, beard shampoo, conditioner, and beard oil.”

These materials will help keep your beard clean, soft, and tangle-free.

Wilson suggests that first-time beard trimmers proceed with caution. Start slowly and trim just a little, then repeat until you get to your desired length. Don’t cut off too much—you can always trim more, but you’ll have to wait a fair amount of time to grow it back if you go too short.

How We Evaluated

To find out which beard trimmers are easiest to handle and make a clean cut, CR’s consumer experience experts enlisted 24 people ranging in age from 18 to 74, all CR staffers or family members, with a variety of hair types, facial hair lengths, styles, and levels of prior experience using beard trimmers to test out one of five widely sold models. (Click on any of the models below to jump to its results.)

Four to five people were assigned to each beard trimmer, and our experts took care to evenly distribute the devices among a variety of hair types, levels of experience with a beard trimmer, and age. “Each individual was given a digital diary to share their experiences in the form of written and photo entries,” says Charu Ahuja, CR’s director of consumer experience and usability research.

Volunteers were expected to use the beard trimmer at least twice over a period of two to four weeks, and to share their experiences and score their trimmers on the factors listed below. “The objective is to capture each person’s qualitative experience but also to quantify various aspects of it as well,” Ahuja says, “so that we can differentiate how well each device worked for a variety of users.”

Setup and help: Participants were asked how easy or difficult it was for them to get started and set up the model for their needs, and how useful the instructions were.

Maintenance and cleaning: Participants were asked what they thought about the required steps, including the difficulty with disassembling and reassembling trimmer parts during cleaning, as well as how they took care of the model overall.

Operation: After each use of the beard trimmer, participants were asked how easy or difficult it was to handle and what their satisfaction was with the results afterward.

Basic features: After at least two uses of the beard trimmer, participants were asked what they thought about the model’s settings, attachments, and features, as well as how easy or difficult it was to change the attachments.

Advanced features: For this study, only two models with advanced features were assessed. These features included a digital touch screen with memory settings (the Remington Smart Beard Trimmer) and a hair clippings vacuum (Remington Vacuum Beard & Stubble Trimmer). Only participants who received these models were asked to score these features.

All participants also scored their beard trimmer models on a 10-question usability scale covering user experience factors. Questions included, for example: whether they needed help from an experienced person to use the model; how confident they felt using the model; whether they liked using the model; and how well-integrated the various aspects of the model were.

What Our Volunteers Said

Overall, participants appreciated having a beard trimmer during the pandemic.

As one participant—who usually gets his beard trimmed at the barber—said of the Remington Smart Beard Trimmer, “I like it a lot. I definitely can see myself using the device to help stretch out the time I take in between barbershop visits.”

What They Liked

Easy-to-follow instructions: While some participants said they like to use third-party tutorials, such as YouTube videos, most appreciated receiving clear and thorough instructions from the manufacturer.

“​The instructions were comprehensive in multiple languages,” said a user who tried the Wahl Lithium Ion+, adding that the manual “discussed the basics of trimming and using all of the different components. It was a value to me because it was my first time using a trimmer.”

Sturdiness and durability: A key point for participants was how durable they felt the model they tried was, and the sturdiness of its additional parts.

Fully washable: Participants who received fully washable models liked being able to simply run the trimmer under water to clean it.

Travel lock: Participants responded enthusiastically to the Remington Smart Beard Trimmer and the Wahl Lithium Ion+, models that both feature a travel lock that automatically prevents the trimmer from turning on while in transit.

“While I was familiar with using the different grooming combs, I also learned this beard trimmer has a travel lock which is a great feature,” one user said.

Packaging: Clean, elegant, and informative exterior packaging made a difference in beard trimmer appeal.

What They Didn't Like

Lots of small, flimsy parts: Trimmers that came with many small parts tended to make participants nervous about whether they could keep track of them all. Participants noted that these small parts appeared “cheap,” and likely to break over time.

“Feels a little flimsy,” a user said of the Remington Vacuum Beard & Stubble Trimmer. “Not sure how long it will last.”

High maintenance cleaning requirements: Participants who tried models that are not fully washable worried that this would make cleaning more onerous over time. Some models also require the user to oil the blades periodically, which participants felt was overly time-consuming.

Short battery life/long charge time: Long battery life is a key feature for most participants, many of whom said that they don’t want to have to charge their trimmer between uses. Long charge times also annoyed participants who were eager to use their trimmer as soon as they unboxed it.

Noise level: While some participants said that a louder trimmer gave them more confidence that it was a robust machine, most preferred trimmers with quieter motors.

CR’s take: The Remington Smart Beard Trimmer ranked the highest among our users. Users appreciated the trimmer’s smart features, such as the digital setting to auto-adjust the trimmer length and the travel lock. Most users expressed no discomfort to their skin or hair while using this model. One user did note that this model is not user-friendly for left-handed people, given that the travel lock button is on the right side of the trimmer.

CR’s take: Users felt that the Philips Norelco MG7750/49 Multigroom Series 7000 was more precise and had the blade strength to cut through coarse hair. It was easy to clean, but setup and use instructions were difficult to follow, even for participants who had used beard trimmers before. Users liked that it was fully washable, small enough for travel, and simple to use.

CR’s take: Participants found the setup instructions comprehensive—written in multiple languages and covering the basics of trimming, as well as how to use all components. However, the model fell short on basic features, as many participants felt the attachments were flimsy. One participant observed that the charge seemed to be weakening by the second shave.

CR’s take: The vacuum feature on the Remington Vacuum Beard & Stubble Trimmer appealed to users, but it requires more maintenance because it is necessary to empty out the vacuum chamber. The model and its attachments felt a little flimsy to some, and some didn’t think it worked well with thick or coarse hair. Overall, however, users were satisfied with the trimmer’s performance.

CR’s take: While the Braun BT5070 Beard Trimmer scored the lowest out of the beard trimmers we evaluated, it still scored well. Although the model appeared to be simple to use, users without prior beard trimmer experience did not find the setup instructions to be helpful. Users said that cleaning the trimmer wasn’t difficult, but this model is not fully washable, so it’s not as easy as running it under the faucet.

How we picked

For facial-hair grooming, it’s convenient to be cord-free. And most trimmers’ rechargeable batteries last plenty long enough to power through several trims.

Trimming a heavy beard quickly is tough, so we preferred trimmers with the power to cut the heaviest beard in a few swipes.

We sought trimmers that had the power to cut quickly through thick beards but could also cut close enough to double as a shaver.

Our top picks come with guide combs in enough sizes to suit any beard style, plus other useful accessories, such as detail trimmers.

The Philips Norelco MG7750 has almost everything we could ask for in a beard trimmer. Its motor offers just the right amount of power—enough to make quick work of thick hair, but not so much that a slight slip will remove a large section of a beard or mustache. Its design feels great in the hand, and it saves space because it can stand upright on a countertop or in a medicine cabinet. The MG7750 is an all-purpose beard, hair, and body trimmer; it includes 14 guide combs, trimmer heads in three widths, a small foil shaver head, and a nose hair trimmer. In our tests, it ran for five hours on one charge. The steel blades are designed to be self-sharpening, no oiling needed. The sole downside is that its stainless steel body makes it relatively heavy and thus less portable than the Philips Norelco MG3750 , our budget pick.

The Wahl Aqua Blade 9899 has the power and versatility of our previous runner-up pick, the Wahl Lithium Ion+ Stainless Steel Trimmer 9818 , but with a larger, more secure grip that makes precise trimming easier and helps prevent slipups that can accidentally remove large chunks of a beard or mustache. That bigger grip also makes the Aqua Blade feel less buzzy in the hand. Like the Lithium Ion+, the Aqua Blade has a more powerful motor than most people need and also works as a hair and body trimmer. It comes with 12 guide combs, a detail trimmer head, a shaver head, and a nose hair trimmer. The fine-pitch steel blades with ground teeth require a couple of drops of oil every month. Unlike our top pick, the Aqua Blade can’t stand on its own, and the supplied stand is a little clumsy to use.

If you want a reliable tool that can cut thick hair down to a stubble—and you don’t mind wrangling a power cord—we recommend the Wahl Peanut 8655 . This less expensive yet powerful trimmer has been our corded pick for seven years running, beating everything we’ve tested it against in terms of cutting power, durability, and closeness of trim. It’s stronger than any cordless trimmer we’ve tried, yet it’s lighter, smaller, more maneuverable, and easier to maintain than other pro trimmers and clippers, which tend toward tanklike construction.

If a low price is your highest priority, we like the power and versatility of the Philips Norelco MG3750 , one of the most popular, well-reviewed trimmers on Amazon. It trims about as well as our top pick, the same company’s MG7750, but its body is made mostly from plastic rather than stainless steel, so it’s lighter and therefore more practical for travel. It doesn’t feel as sturdy and stable as the MG7750, though, and it can’t stand on its own. Unlike other budget-priced trimmers we’ve used, the MG3750 can remove lots of hair quickly without pulling any in the process. And whereas most budget trimmers include only a single, adjustable guide comb, the MG3750 includes seven guide combs, a detail trimmer head, and a nose hair trimmer. Poor battery life is the biggest downside: You’ll probably have to charge it every week, particularly if you’re trimming a thick beard.

The research

Since this guide was first published in 2013, we’ve interviewed a number of experts—mostly professional barbers but also some product managers and everyday beard wearers. They include Jeff Bovee, director of product management at Wahl; Brett Rappaport, who was the consumer marketing manager of male grooming at Philips Norelco at the time of our interview; William Cabrera Jr., owner of Billy’s Barber Shop in Lowell, Massachusetts; Joe and Anthony Berriola of Razor’s Barbershop in Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Jeremy Villao and Hung Nguyen, who at the time of our interview were with Fellow Barber in SoHo and the West Village (respectively) in New York City.

There are plenty of ways to shave, trim, or cut a beard. This guide focuses on corded and battery-powered beard trimmers designed to shape, angle, cut, or trim facial hair. These tools are suitable for practically any length of beard, from stubble to 6 inches or more. If you’re looking for an electric razor, we have a guide for that . Still, there’s a confusing array of devices designed specifically for cutting and trimming beards: those with all-in-one, adjustable guide combs, and those with clip-on guide combs; those with rechargeable batteries, and those with power cords; those with T-shaped blades for shaping and grooming, and those with precision-length combs meant for cutting hair at a uniform length. Each of these styles has its pros and cons. Our intent was to find the trimmers that could handle as many of these tasks as possible, as deftly as possible, and at a reasonable price.

In searching for the best beard trimmers, we looked for devices with the following attributes:

• A powerful motor: We wanted a tool with enough oomph to cut through the coarsest hair, without pulling and without requiring multiple passes.
• A slim, robust design: We like trimmers that are slender in shape but also durable enough to last years without breaking if dropped. A slim design offers more visibility in front of a mirror and allows you to better monitor where you’re cutting, but a too-slim design can be difficult to grip securely.
• Rigid, fixed-length guide combs: Earlier versions of this guide favored trimmers with multiple, fixed-length guide combs, which determine how much beard is left after a pass of the trimmer. Many trimmers, especially inexpensive models, have a single, adjustable-length guide comb. This design is more convenient than having to change combs all the time, but many adjustable guides are flimsy, and most do not offer enough range for thick, long beards. Still, we did try many trimmers with adjustable guides in our latest round of testing. We liked some, but none ended up being picks.
• Ability to shave: Any beard trimmer can be used as a shaver by simply removing the guide comb. None can replace an electric shaver or a razor blade for closeness, but some people like the stubble that beard trimmers deliver, and many trimmers do an adequate job of eliminating the stubble at the bottom of a beard, around the neck. We wanted a tool that could at least approximate a shave, cutting the hair as close as possible without nicking or agitating the skin.
• A pliable, long wire (for a corded tool): Corded trimmers are much more powerful and reliable than cordless models, although they’re less convenient and less popular for beard trimming, specifically. We looked for cords that were both long (at least 5 feet) and flexible for easy maneuvering and storage.
• Grooming accessories: The main trimmer is priority number one, but guide combs, additional trimmer heads, shaver heads (which turn the beard trimmer into a smaller version of an electric shaver), and nose hair trimmers can make a middling device look more attractive. We didn’t dismiss any trimmer for not having these things, but we were definitely impressed with how thoroughly some trimmers complete the “haircutting kit.”

For our latest round of testing, we compared our established picks with all of the new models we could get our beards on. We eliminated any trimmer with an abnormal number of user complaints (especially those about build quality, battery reliability, or blades that pulled hair or jammed). We then consulted with manufacturers to find out which of their models would best suit this guide, making a particular effort to include trimmers with features that weren’t available for our most recent update.

The past few years have seen the introduction of innumerable new (and usually budget-priced) beard-trimmer brands. Most of these have generic designs and many have earned unenthusiastic reviews on Amazon, but we did find one (the Suprent BT315B ) that got such good reviews, we figured we had to give it a spin.

We ended up choosing 13 additional models to test, which we then evaluated against our picks from the previous version of this guide. We also tested two additional models for our spring 2022 update.

For previous versions of this guide, we solicited the help of professional barbers to test the contenders. Following that, we tested trimmers with panel testers who have different facial hair textures and styles, seeking answers to these questions:

• How much hair can each trimmer remove in a single pass? How many passes does it take to remove all of the hair in the test area?
• Is it easy to sculpt the beard to the shape you want without worrying about taking too much off?
• Is the trimmer easy to use in hard-to-reach areas, like under the nose and around the lips?
• Is it comfortable to use and hold?
• Do the trimmer’s blades pull on many hairs?
• Could you use the trimmer to approximate a shave in a pinch?
• How many attachments or beard guides does the trimmer come with, and are the attachments useful?
• Are any interchangeable heads easy to swap out?
• How well do the accessories, such as nose hair trimmers and foil shaver heads, work?

We compared notes on their experience using the trimmers, and Brent spent a few days testing the battery life and evaluating the design and attachments of each of the top contenders. We’ll continue to long-term test all of our picks.

If you’re looking for an all-around trimmer powerful enough to cut quickly through a thick beard, but not so powerful that it places unreasonable demands on your morning attention, we recommend the Philips Norelco MG7750 . It’s a sturdy, well-made trimmer that we loved for many reasons, but mostly because its heft and trimming power make it such a pleasure to cut with. It comes with many useful accessories and also doubles as a hair and body trimmer, making it a solid, versatile choice.

Our testers found that the MG7750’s powerful motor makes it easy to get an overgrown beard looking sleek and stylish in just a couple of minutes. It’s powerful enough to remove lots of beard hair with a single stroke, and that extra power minimizes hairpulling, as well. But unlike the Wahl Aqua Blade 9899 , the MG7750 isn’t so powerful or aggressive that you need to worry about a slight slip removing a large section of beard, so it’s just as good for those times when you need to make only a few little adjustments before a date or job interview. Pop the guides off and it can deliver a reasonably close shave around the bottom of a beard—it’s no match for a razor, but it’ll probably be fine unless you have a modeling gig coming up.

The heavy, 7.5-ounce stainless steel body feels sturdy and secure in the hand, and crosshatched grooves around the top should prevent the rather slick body from slipping. The body flares into a flat bottom that lets the MG7750 stand up on a countertop or in a medicine cabinet, saving space and keeping the trimmer head from getting tangled up in dental floss.

Because it’s intended for hair and body trimming, too, the MG7750 comes with numerous accessories. In addition to the 1 1/16-inch beard-trimmer head, it includes a 1⅜-inch wide hair trimmer—which also works well with very full beards—and a detail trimmer with a ¼-inch cutting area. Fourteen stiff plastic guard combs are provided, enough to suit any beard or hairstyle. There’s also a very effective nose hair trimmer and a foil shaver head (a smaller version of an electric razor ) that is only marginally useful. Changing the heads is easy, and a fabric case is provided for carrying the accessories.

The cutter blades are made from stamped steel, but Philips Norelco says they’re self-sharpening and will stay sharp for years. We confirmed the rated battery life of five hours—long enough to go a few months without recharging—in our testing, although the motor’s speed started to fluctuate a little after the five-hour mark. Charge time is about five hours, and a five-minute charge will give you enough power for a couple of minutes of trimming. An LED light near the bottom illuminates when the charger is connected and goes out when charging is complete. The MG7750 requires no oiling.

Philips offers a two-year warranty on the body (although not on the trimmer heads and accessories) and a 45-day money-back guarantee.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The MG7750 is the heaviest cordless trimmer we tested, albeit by a margin of just 0.2 ounces. We liked the way it felt in our hands, but some might prefer a lighter, nimbler trimmer like the Philips Norelco MG3750 , our budget pick. (At nearly half a pound, the MG7750 will add noticeable weight to an overnight bag, too, so frequent travelers may also favor the MG3750.) The MG7750 trimmer isn’t as powerful as the Wahl Aqua Blade 9899 , and while the lower power makes mistakes less likely, those with thick or fast-growing beards may prefer the Wahl’s extra oomph.

The Wahl Aqua Blade 9899 improves on our previous runner-up pick, the Wahl Lithium Ion+ Stainless Steel Trimmer 9818 , thanks to a larger, more comfortable grip that makes the trimmer feel more secure in the hand (and thus less likely to accidentally take off too much of a beard or mustache). It’s an otherwise similar model, with comparable power and the same extensive selection of accessories for beard, hair, and body trimming. Both trimmers are the most powerful cordless models we’ve found and the best choices for heavy beards. The only downside to the Aqua Blade is that, unlike the Lithium Ion+, it can’t stand up by itself on a counter; Wahl provides a stand, but it’s made of lightweight plastic and requires you to use two hands to remove the trimmer.

All of our testers found that the Lithium Ion+ ’s powerful motor and fine-pitch, ground-steel blades easily removed hair on the first pass, with only infrequent hairpulling and little need for multiple passes. The Aqua Blade seems to have the same mechanism in a different case. Despite the head’s generous 1⅜-inch cutting area, it also does a precise job of shaving hairs near the bottom of the neck. It doesn’t match the closeness that a shaver can deliver, but it’s as good as we’ve ever gotten with a cordless beard trimmer.

Unlike the Lithium Ion+, which can be a bit slippery to hold, the Aqua Blade’s rubbery exterior offers a secure grip that doesn’t require a particularly steady hand. “The material makes it easier to grip, and the grip is thicker and fits more nicely in your palm,” said tester Carlos. With the Lithium Ion+, we found it too easy to swipe off almost half a mustache accidentally in a split second.

While the included stand that holds the Aqua Blade upright on a countertop can be a little unwieldy, it does charge the trimmer when it’s docked. With our other recommendations (as well as with the Lithium Ion+ the Aqua Blade replaced as a pick), you have to plug the charging cable into the bottom of the trimmer, which means it has to remain horizontal during charging.

Like our top pick , the Aqua Blade doubles as a hair and body trimmer. The package includes 11 guide combs, a detail trimmer head with a ¼-inch cutting area, a nose hair trimmer that works effectively, and a shaver head that gave us a closer and faster shave than the ones included with other trimmers we tested. The guide combs are a little flimsier compared with those of the Philips models we picked, but they get the job done. The trimmer-head blades require a couple of drops of oil every month (the Philips MG7750 and MG3750 do not), but it’s easy to do, and Wahl conveniently supplies a small bottle of oil.

At 5.4 ounces, the Aqua Blade is 28% lighter than the Philips Norelco MG7750.

The Aqua Blade’s run time is advertised at 40 minutes, but we got about 2½ hours out of it. Compare this with the MG7750, which runs for about five hours, or the Lithium Ion+, which was still going strong after its promised four-hour battery life. Still, the Aqua Blade should go at least a couple of weeks between charges, even when trimming a heavy beard daily. It also includes a charging LED to let you know when it needs a charge and when the charge is complete.

The Aqua Blade comes with a five-year limited warranty . Wahl trimmers have a reputation for reliability through years of use, as Wirecutter staffers who’ve owned the Lithium Ion+ can attest.

If you have a thick, coarse beard and find battery-powered trimmers to be too weak, you’ll want the Wahl Peanut 8655 , which has been our favorite corded trimmer since we first published this guide back in 2013. It’s more powerful than any of the cordless trimmers we tested, on a par with professional corded tools. But unlike those typically tanklike trimmers, the Peanut 8655 has a slim design, making it more practical for home use and precision grooming. After years of testing and living with this trimmer, we can also say with confidence that it’s among the most durable we’ve ever found. The main reason it isn’t our pick is because most people prefer cordless beard trimmers. It also comes with fewer guide combs than our other picks.

Compared with cordless trimmers, the Peanut, which is available in black or white, does a better job of removing a large amount of beard hair in one pass; when used as a shaver, it also gets rid of more stubble than the cordless models we tested. Joe and Anthony Berriola of Razor’s Barbershop in Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts, gave it the nod as their overall favorite corded trimmer. “It’s got a small head that makes it easy to get into small areas,” Anthony said.

Weighing 4 ounces (not counting the cord) and measuring only 4 inches in length, the Peanut is easy to hold and maneuver around your face, even with a 7-foot-long cord attached. The four trimming guides simply pop on or off; some other corded tools require a screwdriver to make these adjustments. The guides aren’t the sturdiest we’ve tried, but they’re at least stiffer than the ones included with the Aqua Blade. The Peanut’s trimmer requires oiling once a month, but it takes only seconds, and Wahl provides a small bottle of oil.

Wahl covers the Peanut with a one-year warranty. Chances are, you won’t need it—several Wirecutter staffers and many online reviewers have used the Peanut for years with no problems. If you break any of the accessories or require a new blade, replacement parts are readily available. The only consistent complaint about the Peanut is that it’s corded.

The Peanut is also available in a AA battery-powered cordless version , which we haven’t tested. (Several customer reviewers who have reported more than a year of use cite eventual reductions in power not tied to replacement battery status.)

If you’re in the market for something inexpensive yet effective, we think the Philips Norelco MG3750 is the way to go. It clearly outperforms every other trimmer in its price range ($20 to $35), with a surprisingly powerful motor that has proven more than capable in all of our hair-trimming tests. This plastic-bodied trimmer has a slim, lightweight design that ensures plenty of dexterity for detailing and shaping, with a good grip that feels more secure than most trimmers its size. It also works as a hair and body trimmer, although the relatively narrow head may make cutting hair a little tedious. It’s especially useful as a pubic hair trimmer .

Both Carlos and Brent found the MG3750 quite similar to the larger, more expensive MG7750 in its ability to trim with just a single stroke and without grabbing beard hairs. Even the barbers who tested it gave it a slightly above-average score for how much hair it could remove in a single pass, how close each trim could get to the skin, and how it pulled fewer hairs than other budget trimmers. It also delivers a reasonably close shave around the bottom of the beard. Still, those with thick beards would probably have a better experience with our costlier picks.

Although Philips bills the MG3750 as a multipurpose beard, hair, and body trimmer, the 1 1/16-inch-wide cutting surface of its main trimming head may make cutting hair more difficult compared with the 1⅜-inch heads on the MG7750 and the Wahl Aqua Blade. It includes seven nicely sturdy trimmer combs, an effective nose hair trimmer, and a detail trimmer with a ¼-inch cutting surface.

Judged by handfeel, trimming with the MG3750 is a very different experience than what you’d have with our other trimmers. At 3.7 ounces, it’s about half the weight of our other cordless picks, so it doesn’t feel as stable in the hand—but it’s more nimble and thus a little easier to use for detail work. That light weight also makes the MG3750 the best travel companion of all our picks; you can toss it into an overnight bag and you’ll never notice the extra weight.

A clear downside of the MG3750 is its short, one-hour battery life. While ours ran for about 20 minutes longer, the MG3750’s stated eight-hour charge time gives you no leeway if you forget to plug it in every week or two. And as the MG3750 ages, the run time will decrease. You can get about five minutes of use with a 15-minute charge, though.

Philips offers a two-year warranty with the MG3750’s body (not on its trimmer heads and accessories), as well as a 45-day money-back guarantee. Given our long-term experience with less-expensive trimmers, we would expect to see signs of power fade, slower motor speeds, or shorter battery life after a while.

If you want a trimmer specifically for fine detail work: We had initially dismissed the Philips Norelco OneBlade Face + Body QP2630/70 , a lightweight shaver-trimmer combo, because it didn’t have the power to cut easily through thick beards, and its cutting head was supposed to be replaced every three months. But since then, we’ve found it to be a fantastic choice for goatees. It shaves almost as close around a goatee as a good electric razor can, and it works as comfortably and precisely as a mustache trimmer. Although it’s no powerhouse, those with goatees or light beards should find that it does the job as a beard trimmer well enough. Brent has been using it for about a year without changing the blade and reports that it’s still cutting well—and he’s had to recharge it only once.

The stainless steel Andis 32400 Slimline is similar in ways to the Philips Norelco MG7750 and Wahl Aqua Blade 9899 but it’s lighter and has a narrower trimmer head. It cuts well, but the longest guide comb is only ⅜ of an inch, which isn’t enough for fuller and/or longer beards.

The Andis T-Outliner (currently unavailable) is a professional-grade corded trimmer that’s built like a tank, but unlike our picks, it does not come with any guide combs (though you can buy a set of four separately). It is preferred by barbers for close-cutting and fine detail work. It’s also heavier than our corded pick , the Wahl Peanut. Both are covered by one-year warranties.

The Andis WDT-1 Beard and Hair Trimmer has a handy integral comb and trimmer adjustment, but removing the comb for close trims is a pain, and even with the comb removed, it can’t make close trims.

Even at its lowest blade-height setting, the Beard Club PT45 can’t trim close enough to double as a razor.

The Braun BT5070 Beard Trimmer for Men, Cordless & Rechargeable (currently unavailable) has so-so customer reviews and an odd design. It’s a decent trimmer for certain beard lengths, but it’s not very versatile.

If you want a trimmer with an adjustable guide comb, the Braun BT5265 is a solid choice. It actually has two combs, each of which can be set for 20 different lengths using a top-mounted knob that’s easily flicked with the thumb. Carlos and Brent both found it powerful, but Carlos noticed that the combs didn’t glide well through his thicker beard.

The Brio Beardscape is a fairly powerful trimmer with five speeds and a nice, solid feel in the hand, but it can’t trim close enough to double as a razor, and it’s about double the price of our top pick.

Brookstone’s now-discontinued Beard and Mustache Trimmer is somewhat similar to the Aqua Blade, but bulkier and a little heavier. The Brookstone cuts fine, but its guide design is fussy—five different guides, each of which has five different settings, and they’re rather flimsy.

The unusual design of the ConairMan i-Stubble features a floating trimmer head that moves as you run it over the contours of your face. An interesting idea, but we prefer our picks.

We found too many reliability-related complaints about the ConairMan Cordless Beard and Mustache Trimmer to consider it a contender.

The King C. Gillette  is a hybrid shaver/trimmer, but it can’t shave as closely or quickly as the Philips Norelco OneBlade Face + Body QP2630 , and it lacks sufficient cutting power to trim a beard quickly.

The Mowbie Beard Trimmer is less expensive than our budget pick, the Philips Norelco MG3750 , but doesn’t shave as close and doesn’t include the MG3750’s generous selection of accessories. It does incorporate a silicone scrub brush and a vibrating mode intended to act as a face scrubber, but the scrubbing power added by the vibration is negligible.

The beloved Oster Classic 76 Universal Motor Clipper is a corded “workhorse” available in 12 colors. However, it regularly costs more than double what our corded pick, the Wahl Peanut , costs; is significantly heavier; and doesn’t come with any guide combs (though you can buy a set of 10 separately ). The Classic 76’s cord (9 feet) is longer than the Peanut’s (7 feet). Both models are covered by one-year warranties.

We decided to try the Panasonic ER-2403K   because it’s one of the few AAA-powered models available, but it’s among the weakest trimmers we tested and requires several passes. In the end, it gets the trimming done, so it’s a reasonable choice for those who frequent remote locales, but sadly that’s not us.

A former runner-up pick, the Panasonic ER-GB60-K is a powerful, versatile beard trimmer with a whopping 39 length settings. But in our tests it seemed to pull too many hairs for comfort, and the list price is rather high given the performance flaws.

The Panasonic ER-SB40 , an adjustable guide trimmer, cuts well, but it’s bulky in the hand. And its guide-adjustment knob has to be spun with your thumb and forefinger, rather than just flicked with the thumb, which is uncomfortable and inconvenient.

The Philips Multigroom 3100 and Multigroom 5100 (currently unavailable) didn’t impress us as much as other Philips models, and each has a battery life of just one hour.

The vacuum-equipped Philips Norelco QT4070/41 BeardTrimmer 7300 (currently unavailable) has a rather flimsy cutting guide and stiff adjustment wheel, which didn’t impress our testers.

The Remington PG6025 All-in-1 Lithium Powered Grooming Kit costs more than our budget pick but doesn’t perform quite as well. The motor is slightly weaker and the attachments are flimsier.

We considered the simple, affordable Remington MB200 (currently unavailable) with an adjustable guide comb as a possible budget pick because it cuts well, but we found too many complaints about battery life in online reviews.

We tested a previous version of the Remington MB4046 The Beardsman Beard Boss Full Beard Kit . Our consulting barbers docked it for requiring several passes to remove all the hair in a given path. They didn’t like its bulky shape, either. We have not yet tested the current MB4046 model.

The Remington MB4700 Smart Beard Trimmer is a high-tech trimmer with a motorized, adjustable guide comb and an “auto turbo” function that Remington says will automatically adjust the motor speed for the thickness of the beard. It cuts well but is bulky in the hand, and you have to remember to turn the touchscreen off before you start shaving, otherwise you might accidentally change a setting.

Remington’s MB6850 Vacuum Stubble and Beard Trimmer has a built-in vacuum to catch cut hairs, but for us it seemed to miss a lot of them, and it’s also very bulky in the hand.

We chose to test the inexpensive Suprent BT315B (now discontinued) because we saw its great reviews on Amazon. It gets the job done, but compared with our budget pick, it seemed to take a lot more strokes to remove the same amount of hair.

The Wahl Chrome Pro 79524-2501 , a pro-style corded trimmer, has wide, sharp blades that are too large to trim facial hair effectively.

Wahl’s Lithium Ion All-in-One Rechargeable Trimmer 9854 is a decent trimmer, but we’ve found that as time passes the battery gets flaky, its performance diminishes, and it begins to pull hair.

The Wahl Lithium Ion+ Stainless Steel Trimmer 9818 was once our runner-up pick, but the Aqua Blade 9899  is basically the same trimmer with a much more comfortable and secure grip. The Lithium Ion+ is a good choice if you like the look of the stainless steel body, or if you really want a trimmer that can stand upright on a countertop without needing a separate stand.

The relatively inexpensive Wahl Lithium Ion Beard & Stubble Trimmer 9867 (currently unavailable) has a built-in adjustable guide comb that’s not particularly versatile or sturdy.

Wahl once recalled its Lithium Ion Total Beard Trimmer 9888 for battery problems, and this model isn't as popular or easy to find as the Aqua Blade or the Lithium Ion+.

If you’re looking for a corded trimmer that’s typically a bit less expensive than the Wahl Peanut, the Wahl Power Pro 9686 is an excellent choice, though we prefer the former’s slim, peanut-shaped over the Power Pro’s candy-bar shape.

Wahl’s corded T-Styler Pro 9686-300 is virtually identical to the Power Pro but comes with a wider, T-shaped blade. It has all of the same pros and cons.

At around $200, the Walker & Company Bevel Trimmer is one of the most powerful cordless trimmers we’ve tested, with exceptionally sharp blades. But the design feels odd, and it doesn’t come with an option to attach a guide comb, which is essential for many people.

No sense in burying the headline: Philips Norelco’s Multigroom 9000 Series is, hands down, the best beard trimmer you can buy. And that’s before factoring in how much more it can do than just keep your facial hair in check.

It all starts with the beating heart of any beard trimmer. "It does not compromise on power or battery life, and it's very intuitive to use," says Fellow Barber’s Head of Education Emily Clark. The battery life truly overdelivers: your mileage may vary, since Philips Norelco only claims a (still impressive) six hours of charge, but we saw a ridiculous 17 hours of consecutive runtime fresh out of the box. Speaking of the box, there’s a lot in there, all of it useful.

Given how much we love the Philips Norelco Multigroom 9000, it’s no surprise that the more affordable model, the Multigroom 5000, is our budget choice. It offers most of the same steel-bladed precision and customization benefits as its fancier family member, albeit in a less durable body (plastic instead of stainless steel) and half the battery life. Still, its three-hour runtime bests many beard trimmers twice the price. And the lighter plastic body is nice for travel. The Philips Norelco Multigroom 5000 is great for anyone on a budget, but it’s not “budget.”

Whereas other lower-priced beard trimmers can’t handle precise detailing, the Multigroom 5000 includes a detail trimmer and nose trimmer, not to mention hair clipper and body trimmer guards for versatility. It may be a little less perfect across the board compared to the 9000, but the price-to-precision ratio is hard to match.

What to Look for in Beard Trimmers

You want a beard trimmer that’s simple, effective, and doesn’t come with useless features or add-ons. Here are a few features to consider when looking for a great beard trimmer:

Motor power and blade quality: The device needs to be able to mow through your hair without any resistance or pulling. Trusted reviews are the only way to be sure, but we’d also suggest avoiding any beard trimmer that costs less than $20. Often that means a motor with too little power and longevity, and blades that dull quickly.

Cost: Beard trimmers are like the wine menu at a restaurant: you don’t need the priciest option to have a good time, but you don’t want the bargain-basement bottle either. If you don’t believe us, believe pro barber Emily Clark, who lives by the mantra that cheap is expensive. “I’ve had clients buy a cheaper model, only for them to break a couple of months down the line,” she says. “If you want your tool to have a decent battery life and be powerful enough to cut cleanly, it’s well worth not only buying from a trusted brand, but also not going for their cheapest model and spending some time researching reviews.”

Customization: Not every beard style requires a 25-piece kitchen sink accessory set, and often you can save a few dollars—or get a better trimmer—by being honest with yourself about what your beard needs really are. At the most basic, you want adjustable guides, a tool for clean lines, and a foil shaver for smooth skin (if you don’t have a true shaver in your grooming arsenal already). Beyond that, you’re somewhere between future proofing—maybe you will grow a longer beard—and overkill. “Make sure if you’re upgrading, you’re investing in features that are relevant to you and how you will use it,” Clark advises. “The key is to ensure your tool is proficient, efficient, and powerful. From there you can research the additional features offered and if they apply to how you will use your tool.”

Battery life: You’ll want a couple hours at least, though in this case, more is truly more. “Long battery life means consistent use and even being able to travel without a charger,” says Clark. I charge my Philips Norelco Multigroom 9000, maybe once or twice a year, despite it being used weekly by myself and my partner. The company claims it ges six hours of battery life, but I’ve tested mine at 17 hours when it was new. That also means the beard trimmer should last longer, since batteries tend to be a real weak point for tech longevity. (Just ask anyone with a two-year-old iPhone.)

Warranty: A warranty tends to be less a guarantee of functionality for the given duration than it is a symbol of how much trust the manufacturer puts in its product. That’s because no warranty—whether it’s eight years or five years or only two—covers damage from all the ways a trimmer is more likely to kick the bucket: because you dropped it on tile floors, or let the blade rust, or water slipped inside the motor and shorted it out. A store’s return policy is probably more crucial, in case you get the product and hate it immediately.

How We Test Beard Trimmers

I’ve been a grooming editor since 2013, and I’m constantly testing products, including the best (and not-quite-best) beard trimmers, shavers, and hair clippers (as well as skin, hair, and hygiene products). My favorite is (and has been, since 2021) the Philips Norelco Multigroom, and I use that beard trimmer as my measuring stick for other beard trimmers across factors like customization, cost, durability, power, ease of use, and more.

As a longtime professional reviewer, I often test products before they come to market. Given beard trimmers are products that should last for 5-to-10 years, I’m conservative in my approach. There are plenty of innovations, but many reinvent the wheel in a way we don’t actually need. There’s no denying: The Philips Norelco Multigroom 9000 is the best beard trimmer you can buy these days. If its $90 price tag is too steep, the baby-brother Multigroom 5000 is a solid fallback. It’s not shower-proof, has a shorter warranty (five years to the 9000’s eight years), has a plastic body instead of steel, and comes with a few less attachments. But at $40, it gets the basics done nearly as well as it’s pricier sibling.

Beard trimmers are not meant to be used as hair clippers, since clippers require much more power to cut through thicker patches of hair. However, some beard trimmers have the muscle to multitask, and they’ll proudly hype that skill—usually by declaring the work for “beard and head” or similar language. Peter the Great’s Beard Tax

Why did the Russian tsar seek to ban beards?

Tsar Peter the Great presided over an actual fashion police. His inspectors stalked the streets of St. Petersburg, shaving beards and snipping inches off coats.

If you were a bearded man in St. Petersburg, circa 1714, a token like the one above would be your only defense against the overweening power of the state. It served as proof that the bearer had paid his yearly beard tax —a few kopecks for peasants, a hundred rubles or more for nobles or military officials.

The beard tax was just one part of a larger project: Peter the Great’s aesthetic reinvention of Russian culture. The tsar ordered his subjects to replace their familiar long Russian overcoats with French or Hungarian jackets. Mannequins set outside the Moscow city gates illustrated the new fashions for all to see. Tailors who continued to sell Russian styles ran the risk of steep fines, and anyone walking the streets in an old-fashioned robe was liable to have it shorn short by the Tsar’s inspectors.

The project had its roots in Tsar Peter’s days travelling around Europe. In 1697, when he set out on a grand tour, Peter chose to travel incognito, adopting the name “ Sergeant Pyotr Mikhaylov .” Nonetheless, excited rumors of his visit spread from town to town, heralding him as a giant: 7 feet tall, brilliant, and only half-civilized. The trip would consume the next two years. For a time, he worked at a Dutch shipyard to learn ship-building techniques. He visited heads of state, collections of natural curiosities, and anatomical theaters, and threw legendarily wild parties. One particularly raucous event left every one of his host’s chairs smashed into pieces, his paintings shredded into ribbons, and chunks of pavement torn out of the ground.

Upon returning from his travels, he launched immediately into the process of “Europeanizing” his homeland. The first casualty of the tsar’s new enthusiasm were the beards of his court nobles, shorn at his welcome-home party . He doubled down at his New Year’s banquet, at which his razor-wielding jester worked the crowd, giving a box on the ears to anyone who seemed reluctant to shave.

According to Captain John Perry, an English visitor to Russia, the Russians submitted only upon “the Terror of having [their beards]… pull’d out by the Roots, or sometimes taken so rough off, that some of the Skin went with them.” He goes on to tell the story of a carpenter who was obliged by the ukase to lose his beard:

I jested a little with him on this Occasion, telling him that he was become a young Man, and asked him what he had done with his Beard? Upon which he put his Hand in his Bosom and pull’d it out, and shew’d it to me; farther telling me, that when he came home, he would lay it up to have it put in his Coffin and buried along with him, that he might be able to give an Account of it to St. Nicholas, when he came to the other World; and that all his Brothers (meaning his Fellow-workmen who had been shaved that Day) had taken the same Care.

In this, the carpenter was guided by the teachings of the Russian Orthodox Church, which considered uncut facial hair a reflection of piety. Man was created in the image of God ; that included the beard. To shave it was a grave sin.

To the pious, the beard tax was a shocking scandal. Rumors circulated that Peter was not the real tsar but a replacement installed by Russia’s enemies. Anonymous letters accusing the tsar of blasphemy were scattered on the city streets. Nevertheless, the shavings continued.

Finally, in 1705, the Russian military division known as the strel’tsy initiated an open revolt in the town of Astrakhan. A letter from the rebels proclaimed that they were taking a stand for the Christian faith, and against shaving and foreign dress. The revolt was crushed, and hundreds of rebels lost their lives .

The beard tax was just one way that the Tsar sparred with the Church. With typical flair, he organized his drinking companions into a club known as the “All-Jesting and All-Drunken Synod of Fools and Jesters.” The members played at being cardinals and bishops and performed mock marriages and ceremonies.

Reading between the lines, it sounds hellish: enforced merriment, compulsory drunkenness, and endless feasts and masquerades. There was no escape from the All-Drunken Synod; appointments were for life. In this way, blasphemy served as a test of loyalty for the tsar’s closest companions. The implicit choice was clear: Peter or the Church.

As the historian V. M. Zhivov writes in “Cultural Reforms in Peter I’s System of Transformations,” by challenging the Church’s power, the Tsar sought to frame himself as a semi-divine figure, outside of the bounds of normal society:

The emperor demonstrated that he commanded divine power, and society had the choice of either accepting this inhuman superiority or rejecting it as a satanic enterprise. In any case these ludic enterprises posed a religious dilemma for society… The emperor rose above reality and, wielding the power of life and death, transformed that reality according to his desire, turning age-old customs into blasphemous entertainments and playful inventions into state institutions.

Like the beard tax itself, the conflict seems absurd: a few drunken nobles, playing at being priests. But the struggle—one over the very nature of royal power—was deadly serious.

Elvis Presley-inspired beard oil, men's salon, cigar lounge to open in Lubbock

T he newest hair salon and future cigar lounge plans to get the Lubbock salon scene "All Shook Up" by taking inspiration from the King of Rock and Roll.

Tristan Chancey, owner of the upcoming Hairbreak Hotel, 2614 130th St., Unit 3, plans to open her unique men's hair salon on Wednesday, May 1. Chancey named the business in honor of her grandmother, who loved Elvis Presley.

"I was raised with my grandmother in the house, and she had an enormous love for Elvis Presley," Chancey said. "It was something for me to keep her present in my life, so we came up with Heartbreak Hotel, just like the double platinum Heartbreak Hotel."

The salon will offer a variety of hair cuts, stylings, waxing and its own line of beard oil.

Opening day will come with free champagne and sparkling grape juice, treats and a special for $20 haircuts between May 1-15. Walk-ins and appointments are welcome.

"We are more than just your in-and-out kind of salon," Chancey said. "It's going to be a fun, upbeat environment with its rock 'n' roll theme."

Customers can enjoy free coffee and beer during their services.

Another product customers can purchase exclusively through Hairbreak Hotel is the salon's line of beard oil, which Chancey personally makes. It is starting out with four oils, each named after popular Elvis songs:

• Blue Suede Shoes.
• Burning Love.
• All Shook Up.

"Each stylist will have it on their station and (customers) can try it and purchase it," Chancey said.

The cigar sales and lounge part of the business is in the works.
