The M5 motorway in the UK is a motorway running from junction 8 of the M4 motorway near Maidenhead, Berkshire to Exeter in Devon and is approximately 200km (125 miles) long. It opened in sections between 1960 and 1975 and is part of the Intra-Urban Motorway Network.

The M5 motorway is considered to be a relatively safe motorway. According to the Department for Transport statistics, the M5 had the second-lowest rate in England of fatal and serious collisions between 201315. An Alliance of South West Road Safety Groups revealed an overall reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries on the M5 between 201115.

Overall, the M5 has an average road safety rating in line with the majority of other UK motorways, with a lower overall rate of death and serious injury than average.

Not sure what happened but the traffic is mad

Roadworks have just started on the roundabout at junction 9 M5 which has caused chaos to the surrounding roads leading to/from the roundabout. It normally takes me 3/4 minutes to get onto the M5, last night (5.30pm) it took an hour!!

is the m5 southbound between j21 and j22 closed at night? We live along the A370 and lorries have been thundering past from about 2200 onwards.

Constant traffic jams from j2 Oldbury towards j1. I believe the cause is the 60 speed limit imposed on the slim premise of air quality. These jams cause more Co2 than if the limit was at 70

Live M5 traffic: Long queues after vehicle flips at Exeter services

Delays have been reported between Topsham and Exeter services

Drivers face long delays on the M5 in Devon after a vehicle reported flipped over. Traffic cameras show huge queues forming along the motorway, between junctions 30 and 31 at Exeter.

According to Google Maps, traffic is backed up in both directions on the motorway, though the overturned vehicle is reportedly located in the southbound carriageway.

Inrix reports: "Queueing traffic due to overturned vehicle on M5 Southbound from J30 A379 (Exeter / Service Areas) to J31 A38 (Okehampton turn off)."

M5 traffic live: Latest after huge two-lorry crash closes motorway for 13 hours

The motorway between Gloucester/Cheltenham and Tewkesbury was closed for most of the day after one of the lorries crossed over the central reservation

The M5 in Gloucestershire has reopened after serious crash in the early hours of today (Tuesday, February 6). Two lorries were involved in the collision at around 2.30am, after one crossed from the southbound carriageway to the other side, overturning and spilling fuel between junctions 10 and 11.

The motorway was closed both ways between junction 9 for Tewkesbury and 11 for Gloucester/Cheltenham during the morning rush-hour. It was closed northbound between those two junctions until 4pm and is now fully reopen.

Extensive damage had been done to the central reservation and the road surface, National Highways said. Barrier repairs took place through the day.

Gloucestershire Police were also at the scene. A spokesperson for the police force said the occupants in both lorries were taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be serious.

Traffic easing, emergency carriageway repairs complete on M5 Northbound between J11 A40 (Gloucester / Golden Valley Bypass) and J9 A46 (Tewkesbury). Cameras shows entry slips and the road has reopened now around 16:05.

There is now another closure

M5 Southbound lane closed on exit slip road due to broken down van at J11A A417 (Gloucester / Cirencester ). Traffic is coping well.

M5 Northbound closed, queueing traffic due to emergency carriageway repairs between J11 A40 (Gloucester / Golden Valley Bypass) and J9 A46 (Tewkesbury). Congestion to traffic is heading away along the A38 through Coombe Hill towards Tewkesbury. The entry slips have also been closed whilst resurfacing works take place near J10 (Cheltenham) where the works are being done.

Diversion: Via the A40 through Gloucester to Over Roundabout, then the A417 Ledbury Road to the M50 J2 and follow the M50 J2 to re-join the M5 at J8 (Strensham Interchange).

Latest full update from National Highways

The M5 in Gloucestershire is closed northbound between J11 (Gloucester) and J9 (Tewkesbury) due to a collision involving 2 heavy goods vehicles (HGV).

One of the HGV's has crossed over from the southbound carriageway onto the northbound and has subsequently overturned. As a result, the HGV's fuel tank has ruptured and has spilled out onto the carriageway.

Barrier repairs are taking place.

Resurfacing of the northbound carriageway is required. It is anticipated that the northbound closure will remain in place until late this afternoon.

All lanes are now open southbound.

All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to multi-vehicle accident on M5 Southbound at J30 A376 Sidmouth Road (Exeter / Service Areas). Traffic held around 12:30, camera shows there are four cars on the hard shoulder and a lorry in lane one (of three).

Diversion routes

There are long delays and huge queues.

The M5 in Gloucestershire is closed in both directions between J11 (Gloucester) and J9 (Tewkesbury) due to a collision involving 2 heavy goods vehicles (HGV).

Emergency services including Gloucestershire Police are in attendance. National Highways have deployed resources to assist with traffic management.

The closure is likely to remain ongoing throughout most of the day as there is significant damage to the central reservation barrier and the road surface.

Delays of 60 minutes above normal are reported southbound, with just over 7 miles of congestion on the approach to J9.

Delays of approximately 15 minutes above normal are reported northbound.

Diversion Routes

Road users travelling northbound are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs.

• Exit the M5 northbound at J11 and take the 1st exit onto the A40 heading west.
• Follow the A40 to the roundabout with the A417 at Gloucester and take the 3rd exit onto the A417 heading north.
• Continue on the A417 up the M50 J2 and turn right at the junction to join the M50 eastbound.
• Follow the M50 eastbound back to the M5 J8 and re-join the M5 to continue your journey.

Road users travelling southbound are advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs

• Exit the M5 southbound at J9 and take the third exit onto the A438.
• From the A438, take the A38 southbound.
• Continue southbound on the A38, travelling the full stretch of the A38 to the A40.
• At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A40 eastbound.
• Continue on the A40 to the M5 to re-join and continue your journey at J11.

Recovery underway to remove lorry

National Highways said: "National Highways is working hard with the emergency services and its contractors to reopen the M5 as soon as it is safe to do so.

"Recovery has arrived on site and once the lorry has been recovered, it is hoped that two lanes on the southbound can be reopened. National Highways inspectors will then be able to fully assess the road surface to determine whether resurfacing is required before the northbound can be safely reopened.

"Fully signed diversion routes are in place for northbound traffic following the solid triangle symbol via the A40, A417 and M50 and for southbound traffic following the solid circle symbol via the A438, A38 and A40."

M5 delays after lane closed by crash in Somerset

There were delays heading northbound this morning (April 15)

A lane was closed on the M5 following a crash in Somerset this morning (April 15). The collision led to delays on the northbound carriageway.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, the crash took place at junction 24 for Bridgwater at around 10.15am. The lane reopened and traffic returned to normal by 12pm. It was first reported at around 10.15am.

Inrix says: "Traffic easing, earlier accident on M5 Northbound at J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South). Lane three (of three) was closed."

Live: M5 southbound near Bristol remains closed after tipper truck hits overhead gantry

The motorway has been shut off

The M5 southbound remains closed after a crash that forced traffic off the motorway. The road has been shut near Cribbs Causeway since 8.40am.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix has confirmed the closure in both directions between Cribbs and the M49 junction.

The update says: "M5 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to accident from J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) to J18 M49. Cameras show traffic is being forced off the motorway in both directions."

National Highways confirmed shortly after the report that the collision involved a tipper truck colliding with an overhead gantry. They said: "The M5 in South Gloucestershire is closed northbound between J18A (M49) & J17 (Cribbs Causeway) and southbound between J17 & J18 due to a collision whereby a tipper truck has collided with an overhead gantry sign in lane 1. As a result, all other gantry signs across both carriageways have been affected.

"Emergency services including Avon & Somerset Police are in attendance, whilst National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting with traffic management.

"Structural engineers are currently on scene carrying out a full inspection of the damage sustained. Early estimations are that the the road is likely to remain closed throughout the day."

Inrix reports: "M5 Southbound closed due to emergency resurfacing repairs from J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) to J18 M49. Congestion to M4 for northbound traffic A38 Gloucester Road as it diverts.

"Northbound was re-opened around 17:45 but southbound remains closed for resurfacing from the spillage. Diversion - via the M4 and M49."

M5 northbound is now OPEN

Inrix says: "M5 Southbound closed severe delays, stop-start traffic due to emergency resurfacing repairs from J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) to J18 M49. Congestion to M4 Interchange. Also seeing delays on routes through Avonmouth , Severn Beach, Westbury on Trym, Filton and Bristol as traffic Diverts. There also delays on the other side. Traffic not helped by the problems on the Prince of Wales Bridge.

"Northbound has now re opened but southbound remains closed as lane one requires resurfacing from the spillage. Diversion - via the M4 which is struggling and the M49."

Inrix reports: "M5 Southbound closed severe delays, stop-start traffic due to emergency resurfacing repairs from J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) to J18 M49. Congestion to J19 (Portishead) northbound. Also seeing delays on routes through Avonmouth , Severn Beach, Westbury on Trym, Filton and Bristol in general as traffic Diverts, traffic not helped by the problems on the Prince of Wales Bridge.

"Northbound has now re opened but southbound remains closed as the road requires resurfacing from the spillage. Diversion - via the M4 which is struggling and the M49."

M4 closed by multi-vehicle crash

The M4 is now closed in both directions after a mutli-vehicle crash this afternoon. The emergency services, including an air ambulance, are at the scene.

The latest log from Inrix says: "M5 in both directions closed long delays, slow traffic due to emergency repairs and spillage of hydraulic fluid from J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) to J18 M49. Congestion to J19 (Portishead) northbound. Also seeing delays on routes through Avonmouth , Severn Beach, Westbury on Trym and Filton as traffic Diverts.

"Works are still being carried out on the damaged gantry sign and one lane will require resurfacing from the spillage. Diversion - via the M4 which is struggling and the M49 in both directions."

Diversion details

Diversion details, southbound traffic is being diverted via the hollow square diversion symbol.

• Exit the M5 at J15 and head onto the M4 westbound
• Continue on the M4 to junction 22 and proceed to join the M49 headed southbound
• Continue on the M49 to rejoin the M5 at J18

Northbound traffic (not symbol led)

• Follow the above diversion route in reverse

M5 to be closed throughout the day

In an update from National Highways, they said: "The M5 in South Gloucestershire is closed northbound between J18A (M49) & J17 (Cribbs Causeway) and southbound between J17 & J18 due to a collision whereby a tipper truck has collided with an overhead gantry sign in lane 1. As a result, all other gantry signs across both carriageways have been affected.

Hydraulic fluid spill causing lengthy recovery

The latest from Inrix: "M5 in both directions closed long delays, queueing traffic due to recovery work, accident and spillage of hydraulic fluid from J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) to J18 M49. Congestion to Traffic is also slow through Westbury on Trym, Henbury, The Industrial Estate through Avonmouth, Severn Beach and on the westbound M4 approaching J22 as traffic diverts away from the closure.

"Recovery work is on going with the tipper truck which will be a lengthy process, the road surface is also being inspected for damage.

"Diversion - southbound via M5 at J15 and head west onto the M4, northbound via M5 J18 towards M4."

National Highways advises M5 drivers to "plan ahead"

Ray Morwood, South West Operations Manager for National Highways, said:

The M5 has been closed to protect the travelling public and we’re working as quickly as we can to assess the gantry damage and make safe the signage and fittings. The incident has occurred on a busy section of the M5, we are working with our police partners, and we appreciate this will cause significant delays to people’s journeys. In the meantime, we advise people to add a little extra time for their journeys, and to consider alternative routes where they can. We thank all drivers for their co-operation and patience and we’re working quickly to establish timescales for repair and recovery work.

As if we needed more proof the M5 Touring is finally coming to America , the G99 has been spotted on US soil. BMW is putting the finishing touches on the eagerly awaited super wagon ahead of its release in Q4 2024. Even though it’s still heavily camouflaged, the Audi RS6 Avant rival already looks imposing with its wide hips and quad exhaust.

The long-roof M5 has the headlights and taillights completely exposed, which we don’t remember seeing before. The few visible sections of the body reveal the prototype is painted in white. The brakes look absolutely massive, as does the rear diffuser. The roof spoiler appears to be borrowed from the i5 M60 Touring . In addition, the kidney grille looks similar to what you’ll find on the M Performance i5 models.

If you’re thinking it’s a massive car, you’re not alone in your assessment. It is believed the G90 M5 Sedan is 5096 mm (200.6 in) long and 1970 mm (77.5 in) wide. The G99 M5 Touring is likely to have extremely similar proportions. Weight is, of course, a real concern. A previous report indicated the sedan tips the scales at a whopping 5,368 pounds (2,435 kilograms) . If true, and assuming it’s without a driver, that would make it 1,190 lbs (540 kg) heavier than the old M5 Competition (F90).

The huge jump in weight is not primarily caused by the size increase. It’s mostly due to the adoption of a plug-in hybrid setup. Thankfully, the V8 is staying, but it’ll work with an electric motor. The 4.4-liter, twin-turbo “S68” and e-motor are expected to deliver a combined 718 horsepower. The massive output will be routed to 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. BMW M will fit 285/40/20 front and 295/35/21 rear tires, respectively.

The first order of business is to reveal the sedan in the following months. The more practical body style will be out near the year’s end. In the United States, we’re estimating the Touring will start at $120,000 to $125,000 . At home in Germany, Bavaria’s ultimate wagon will kick off at less than €150,000.
