Is the U.S. B1 or B2 visa easy to get?

To find out just how high your chances of approval are for getting a B1 or B2 visa, take RapidVisa’s Tourist Visa Approval Odds Calculator . The  Tourist Visa Approval Odds Calculator  uses a proprietary algorithm developed by RapidVisa, using data from our customers and from statistics put out by the National Visa Center (NVC). The calculator is a helpful tool in knowing what percent of US tourist visas get approved and what is the rejection rate of a B1 visa. These numbers are designed for educational purposes only and should not be relied upon for your results. Many other factors may play into your approval odds that are not taken into account by this calculator, including your visa interview.

What are the chances of getting a B1 or B2 visa?

There are many factors that can improve or hamper your odds of approval for a  U.S. tourist visa . The primary reason for the interview is to convince the consular officer that you have no intention of overstaying or immigrating permanently to the U.S.

Factors that may affect your odds of approval:

Employment status & verifiable income.

Being unemployed, or employed for a short period of time at a job may hurt your case. Having a long standing career in your home country, and working for the same company for more than five years may help your case.

Family Obligation & Family in the USA

If you are single without dependents, or have children that don't live with you, and you want to travel to the U.S., the officer may think you don't have enough reason to return to your country. However, having kids or dependent family members in your country is a great sign of strong ties. If you have family in the U.S., this could be a sign that you have a reason to stay in the U.S. and this may work against you. If you have a fiancé or a spouse in the U.S., your odds are lower, and you should probably opt for the  fiance visa  or  spousal visa .

Property & Asset Ownership

Owing assets and especially property or businesses in your home country are a great sign of strong ties.

If you've traveled to other countries before, especially first-world countries and did not overstay your visa and returned to your country, this is a sign that you are trusted to follow the visa process. If you have traveled to a first-world country with strict immigration policies and didn't  overstay your visa , this goes a long way to prove you are trustworthy.

Length of Trip

If you request to stay in the United States for a long period of time in your application, it may be a red flag that you intend to figure out a way to immigrate. If you request a more realistic time span, that is specific to the purpose of your trip, this is a point in your favor. For example, if you are traveling to a 5-day conference, requesting a trip for 3 months may look fishy. But if you only request 2 weeks, it makes more sense for that situation and is consistent with someone traveling for that purpose.

If you have no means to pay for the trip, and are relying on only a friend or family member to pay, this could count against you. However, if you have the means to pay yourself or if your company is paying for the trip, this signals that you won't become a burden to the state.

If you are heavily involved in your community, especially in a way that the organization would be deficient if you didn't return, this could help signal a strong tie. If you are a full-time college student enrolled in your country, this is good evidence you have an intention to return.

Of course, if you've been previously approved for a  B1/B2 visa  and entered the U.S., and returned to your country, this works in your favor. It proves you can be trusted  not to overstay. However, if you previously overstayed, your odds of approval are lower.

The more specific and precise your purpose of travel is, the better your case for a travel visa. . If you are attending a specific conference in your profession, or attending a wedding, or watching an event like a concert or solar eclipse, or anything else that is very specific and has a convincing reason to be in a specific place at a specific time, this builds a better case.

Denial Rates by Country

What is the rejection rate of a B1 or B2 visa based on your home country? The following table is straight from  NVC statistics  showing the actual numbers for 2022. The country doesn't necessarily play a role in your likelihood of approval or denial. What's more likely is that people in high denial countries tend to not be qualified. Use our approval odds calculator to determine if you may have a good shot at approval or not.

What are the chances of being rejected for a travel visa to the US?

Not exactly an open door policy.

Nearly 6.4 million people came to the United States on a B visa in 2017. This common visa type—B-1, for business travel ; B-2, for tourism; or the combo B-1/B-2, for a bit of both —is issued for short-term travel to the US. If you plan to attend business meetings or conferences, spend a week on vacation in Hawaii or Florida, or visit family in the US, this is the visa you’re likely to need.

Not everyone requires one, of course. Citizens of 38 countries are eligible for the ESTA visa waiver system , allowing them to bypass ordinary visa requirements for short-term business or tourist travel. They are mostly rich nations in Europe and Asia.

But despite how common the B visa is, getting one isn’t as easy as it might appear. Applicants must pay a fee, apply online, and then attend an in-person interview, where they’ll be grilled on what their plans are, where they’ll be going, and—crucially—when they plan to leave the US. Processing time from there can take as much as two months.

Even then, many people find their applications rejected. In fiscal year 2018—which ran from October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018—B visa applicants from around 50 countries were more likely to have their application refused than accepted. For citizens of Somalia, the refusal rate was more than 90%, with only 38 Somalis granted a B visa (pdf).

The table below shows the refusal rates for each country with at least 10 visas issued in fiscal year 2018, according to data from the US Department of State (pdf). The overall refusal rate, including countries with 10 or fewer visas issued, was 32.4%.

Qualifying for a US Visa

To qualify for a US Visa, applicants must fulfill all eligibility criteria under all applicable US laws for the visa category they are applying for. Key points include:

You must meet the requirements specified in US immigration laws for the specific visa category.

An immigration officer will conduct a visa interview to assess your application.

According to section 104(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, immigration officers are the only ones who have the final say on visa applications.

Common reasons for a United States visa rejection

When applying for a US Visa , particularly the US B1/B2 visa for tourism and business, you must keep in mind what can lead to a rejection. Let’s delve into some of these reasons and insights on how to avoid them.

Incomplete visa application or missing supporting documentation - INA section 221(g): Failing to provide a complete visa application or all the necessary documents is a common reason for a US Visa rejection. To avoid this, ensure your application is fully completed and accurate, and double-check that all required documents are included.

You aren’t eligible for the visa you applied for or don’t prove your intention to not immigrate to the United States - INA section 214(b): Applicants must demonstrate that they qualify for the visa category and do not intend to immigrate permanently. This involves showing solid ties to your home country and a clear purpose for your visit to the US.

You’re convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude - INA section 212(a)(2)(A)(i)(I): A conviction for a crime involving moral turpitude can lead to visa denial. This means you may have your visa application denied if you committed a crime or offensive act that can be defined as vile or insulting to one’s moral compass. You must disclose such convictions and provide relevant documentation during your application process.

You’re convicted of a drug violation - INA section 212(a)(2)(A)(i)(II): Drug violations are taken very seriously. Applicants with such convictions will likely face rejection unless specific waivers are available.

You have two or more criminal convictions for which the total sentence of confinement was five years or more - INA section 212(a)(2)(B): Multiple criminal convictions with significant sentences are a red flag in the visa application process. Be prepared to discuss these issues openly and provide necessary explanations or documentation.

You didn’t provide an adequate affidavit of support when one was required (denied under public charge) - INA section 212(a)(4): If an affidavit of support is required, failing to provide one that meets the necessary criteria can result in a visa denial. Ensure that your affidavit of support meets all the requirements.

Misrepresented a fact or committed fraud to attempt to receive a visa – INA section 212(a)(6)(C)(i): Honesty is crucial in your visa application. Misrepresentation or fraud can lead to visa denial and have long-term consequences for future visa applications.

Previously stayed longer than permitted in the United States - INA section 212(a)(9)(B)(i): Overstaying a previous visa can significantly impact your chances of getting a new one. You must adhere to the terms of your visa to avoid future complications.

Consequences of a US Visa rejection

A US Visa rejection can have several consequences:

Delay in travel plans: A visa denial can lead to significant delays in your travel plans, affecting work, education, or personal commitments.

Financial implications: The visa application fee is non-refundable, and a rejection means incurring additional costs for future applications.

Impact on future visa applications: A visa rejection can impact the outcome of future visa applications, as it becomes part of your visa history.

How to appeal a US Visa rejection

“Visa status: denied”. No one wants to receive this outcome, but it can happen. Sometimes, you can appeal the decision.

The appeal process for a US Visa rejection varies depending on the reason for denial:

INA Section 221(g): If denied due to incomplete application or lack of information, submit further documentation within one year of the refusal.

INA Section 214(b): There is no appeal process for this reason. However, if circumstances have significantly changed, you can reapply with a new application.

INA Section 212(a)(4): Overcoming a public charge denial involves demonstrating adequate financial support through personal funds, a job offer, or sponsorship from a US resident. Non-immigrants must present sufficient funds to support their stay in the United States.

INA Section 212(a)(6)(C)(i) - This ineligibility is permanent, but you may apply for a visa waiver in some cases.

INA Section 212(a)(9)(B)(i) - Denial due to a previous overstay carries a 3-year or 10-year visa ineligibility period, depending on the duration of the unlawful stay.

Can I reapply if my US Visa was rejected?

After a visa rejection, you can reapply in the future. However, except for 221(g) refusals, this requires a new application and fee.

  • Improve your chances of getting a US Visa after rejection: If you’re applying for a business or tourist visa (B1/B2), you can choose our service and receive expert visa guidance throughout your application process.

Is it possible to know the reason for a US Visa rejection?

Yes. For most visa denials, applicants are informed verbally and in writing about the basis for the denial during their interview.

How do you avoid a US Visa rejection?

To avoid a US Visa rejection, consider the following tips:

Complete the application accurately: Ensure all sections are filled out correctly, and all required documents are included.

Provide proof of ties to your home country: Demonstrate strong ties to your home country to dispel any doubts about your intentions to immigrate.

Prepare for the interview: Be well-prepared for the visa interview with clear answers about your travel purpose and plans.

Follow visa rules and conditions: Adhere to the terms of your visa, including duration of stay and purpose of visit.

7 Common US Visitor Visa Refusal Reasons (& How To Avoid Them)

Excitement bubbles inside you as you eagerly wait in front of the visa officer, answering the questions. All the hope is to catch a glimpse of that shiny slip that says, your US visa has been approved!

But things always don’t go as planned!

You answer all the questions, and wait for the result, only to find a dreaded mark of disappointment—a slip that says your visa has been refused.

Nothing can be more frustrating than this.

If your dreams have been caught in a whirlwind for a US visa and tossed aside, leaving you frustrated then this article is for you.

So, how can I avoid US visa rejection?

There are many reasons for visitor visa refusals. The good news is most of them can easily be avoided with careful preparation and visa processing from the beginning.

7 Common US Visitor Visa Refusal Reasons

US Visitor visas, also known as B1-B2 visas can be applied by anyone with a valid passport/travel document. But that doesn’t mean everyone who applies will get the visa approved.

A US visitor or B1/B2 visa is never guaranteed. However, you can become the strongest candidate by learning the refusal reasons and proper preparation to avoid them.

So, why are US tourist visas rejected?

  • Incomplete or Incorrect DS160 Document
  • Unable to Show Logical Purpose of Visit
  • Failure to show No Strong Ties to the Home Country
  • Poor Communication Skills / Lack of Confident
  • Focusing/Disregarding the Invitation Letter
  • Previous Visa Violations records
  • Criminal History or Fraud

Reason #01: Incomplete or Incorrect DS160 Document

The most common reason for US visitor visa refusal is an incomplete or incorrect DS160 form. The Visa officer will reject your visa if your DS160 form is incomplete, in terms of providing information.

The visa officer will see this visa form in front of them while interviewing you. So what information you provide in the form is important.

Also, your visa will be rejected if the information provided during the interview doesn’t match the documents.

Though the US visa officers don’t see the documents, rather, they solely focus on the interview. You should still carry all your documents and proof in the interview.

For instance, carry the papers if you use your investment or property for financial proof. Otherwise, the visa officer can deny your visa.

Reason #02: Unable to Show Logical Purpose of Visit

Every applicant faces a common question during the visa interview – what is your purpose of visit the US?

Getting the B1/B2 visa largely depends on the answer to this question.

Unfortunately, most applicants reply too casually regarding the visit purpose. You must avoid answering like the below:

  • I planned to travel in the future, so I decided to apply for the nonimmigrant visa
  • I want to explore the countryside of the USA
  • I planned to stay with one of my cousins, but the details are not finalized yet

When you reply to the question above, be sure you will not get the B1/B2 visa. Instead, you have to be more precise. The purpose of the visit has to be valid. Some valid reasons are:

  • Visiting family, children, or other family members
  • Joining a meeting or training from your company
  • Attending a conference
  • Joining a sports event
  • In a relationship/engaged/married

Also, make sure your work profile supports the purpose of the visit. Moreover, documents, the DS160 form, and financial status should be relevant to the trip’s purpose. And always try to explain the visa officer about your positive highlights of life in detail.

  • Solution: Prepare to answer a logical purpose for visiting the US.

Reason #03: No Strong Ties to the Home Country

Your B1/B2 visa will be refused if you don’t have strong ties to your home country. It means you will most likely not return to your home country.

Wondering how the visa officer understood it?

Well, your DS160 form & interview will give about your ties to the visa officer. An officer will closely look at the DS160 to understand your family situation. They also might ask you questions directly regarding your family members. If they find the ties to your home country are insufficient, they will reject your visa.

Three kinds of ties are there, including,

  • Family: You are the only earning person in your family. So, your family is dependent on you.
  • Career: You have a steady or stable job/business.
  • Investments: You have already invested in business, lands, or property.
  • Solution: Adding as many ties to your DS160 form with proof would always be best. The more ties you show, the higher the chance of getting the visa.

Reason #04: Poor Communication Skills / Less Confident

Are you confident that you filled out the DS160 correctly?

Are all the relevant documents available?

Can you provide enough valid reasons for the trip?

You need to explain these questions to the visa officer. Great communication skills are a must in order to be able to explain your situation. Simultaneously, you have to be confident with your answers.

Also – you should be polite during the interview. Don’t answer with a loud voice. Make sure the visa officer understands your answer clearly. Avoid feeling nervous and have eye contact with the embassy officer.

If you couldn’t understand the question of the visa officer, request them to repeat it. Politely reply. “I am sorry. Would you please repeat that for me?” Visa officers are extremely friendly, and they will repeat the question indeed.

  • Solution: “Practice makes a man perfect” – this proverb will greatly benefit this case. Say your answers with logical explanations in front of the mirror before the interview.

Reason #05: Disregarding the Importance of the Invitation Letter

The invitation letter is a crucial document for a B1 visa. The organization or company you are meeting provides this letter. The invitation letter has to have the below 2 vital features.

  • The Letter Must be On the US Entity Letterhead

You can’t carry an invitation letter that doesn’t have the letterhead of the US entity. The invitation letter must have the paper of the US entity. The US entity can now be your organization, company, or client.

  • The invitation Letter Must Contain a Precise Explanation of the purpose of the Trip

Most of the time, companies, organizations, or clients provide the invitation letter. Unfortunately, they tend to be too generic, mentioning the visit’s purpose. They show purposes such as “attending training/conference” or “business meeting.”

Such invitation letters are most likely to be refused by the visa officer. It would always be best to be as detailed as possible.

  • Solution: Ensure the reason for your trip mentioned in the invitation letter matches your answer in the visa interview is crucial.  Also, your invitation letter must contain the below information,
  • Details of the accommodation
  • Information of sponsorship
  • Dates of your trip

If you are going for the purpose of visiting friends or family members, or just for tourist activities, an invitation letter is not mandatory, nor you should bring one. So don’t focus on the invitation letter too much if it’s a personal visit.

Reason #06: Earlier Visa Violations Records

Did you apply for a visit visa earlier and it was denied?

If yes, your new US visitor visa application will be carefully checked for what’s changed in since your last refusal.

You can ask any consultant or expert about your previous refusal and what might be the possible reasons.

This way, you can prepare yourself better for the future. Also, avoiding earlier mistakes becomes convenient.

Reason #07: Criminal History or Fraud

You can be ineligible for a US visitor visa due to your criminal record and the crime type. Although, all crimes can’t make you ineligible. But a criminal record will make it difficult for you to overcome the visa interview process.

Also, visa refusal can happen if the embassy officer discovers visa fraud. Your visa will be refused if your documents show that you provide fraudulent information.

  • Solution: If you’ve any criminal records, better avoid trying for a US visa. And if everything is ok, prepare the documents in a way that shows you don’t belong to this category.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will visa refusal affect future visa applications?

Unfortunately, yes. Your previous refusal will affect all your future refusals. If you have one, be prepared to face the interview really well, focus on your positive highlights, and mention to visa officers your career, travel history, immovable assets, and family ties.

If my visa is rejected can I apply again?

Yes, you can. But after a certain time when there are circumstantial changes.

7 Common Reasons for B1/B2 Visa Rejection (214B)

  • February 9, 2024
  • By Yvette Bansal

Beginning a journey to a foreign land can be an exciting prospect, but navigating the visa application process can be challenging. Understanding the reasons for U.S. visa rejection is crucial to avoid common pitfalls. The United States visa policy is detailed and specific, and each application undergoes rigorous review, often including an interview with a consul. Visa refusal can leave applicants feeling disappointed and unsure of the next steps.

According to the latest statistics from the US Department of State, the overall visa rejection rate for all non-immigrant visas was 22.1% in fiscal year 2022. This means that for every 100 visa applications, 22 were denied. This statistic varies wildly by country and visa category.

Visa rejections can be a frustrating experience for applicants, and there are several common reasons why they occur. Familiarizing yourself with the reasons for visa rejection and understanding the visa application process for the country you plan to visit are vital steps. It’s essential to take the visa application process seriously and prepare thoroughly for the interview. Once you have applied for your visa, UDETI’s former consular officers ( USA visa consultants ) can assist you with visa interview preparation, helping you to address common reasons for visa rejection.

Understanding B1/B2 Visas

B1/B2 visas are non-immigrant visas that allow foreign nationals to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1), tourism (B-2), or a mix of both (B1/B2). B1 visas are for business purposes, such as attending conferences, negotiating contracts, or consulting with business partners. B2 visas are for tourism, such as visiting family and friends, sightseeing, or medical treatment.

To apply for a B1/B2 visa, you must complete the DS-160 non-immigrant visa application form and pay the application fee. You will also need to provide a valid passport, a photograph, and evidence of your purpose of travel. You may also be required to attend an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Both visas can be issued together, allowing travel for both business and tourism. The number of visits to the U.S. with a B-1/B-2 visa has no official limit, but it’s essential to adhere to the visa’s purpose and restrictions to avoid any issues with immigration authorities. If in doubt, consulting an immigration expert is advisable.

Section 214(b) Explained: Overcoming Visa Refusals

Section 214(b) is a part of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act that states every visa applicant is presumed to be an immigrant until they can prove to the satisfaction of the consular officer that they qualify for a nonimmigrant status. This means that to qualify for a visitor or student visa, an applicant must demonstrate that they meet the requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

The most common reason for refusal under this section is the failure to prove a residence abroad that the applicant has no intention of abandoning. Applicants must show ties to their home country that would compel them to leave the U.S. at the end of their temporary stay. It’s important for applicants to demonstrate strong ties to their home country to overcome this presumption and qualify for a nonimmigrant visa.

If you’ve been denied a visa under Section 214(b), it’s not necessarily permanent. The consular officer will review your case again if you can provide additional convincing evidence of ties outside the United States. However, in some cases, an applicant may not qualify for a nonimmigrant visa, regardless of how many times they reapply, until their personal, professional, and financial circumstances change considerably. It’s important to understand that each case is unique, and the decision to grant a visa depends on individual circumstances.

What Are The Reasons For Visa Rejection?

If you’ve faced visa rejection or want to prevent it, knowing the common reasons behind it is crucial. It’s essential to be meticulous when filling out your visa application form and answering interview questions.

Facing visa refusal can be disheartening, but awareness of the common reasons for U.S. visa rejection is crucial for a successful application. Here, we outline why a visa gets rejected, highlighting key aspects that applicants must consider.

1. Lack of strong ties

Applicants who lack significant ties in their home country, such as being unmarried, may be perceived as lacking a stable family foundation, raising concerns about their commitment to returning home. Individuals who have not worked for an extended period may be deemed financially unstable or lacking professional roots, increasing the risk of visa rejection.

Lack of immediate family ties, such as spouse, parents, or children, may signal a reduced sense of responsibility and attachment to the home country. A weak educational background can be a red flag, as it may suggest a lack of qualifications or skills that could anchor an applicant to their home country.

If you’re concerned about weak ties affecting your visa application:

  • Consider strengthening it by highlighting your family, educational, and professional connections.
  • You can also demonstrate your financial stability through savings or investments and mention any freelance work or personal projects you’ve pursued during any employment gap.
  • Additionally, showcasing enduring connections like friendships, business relationships, or community involvement can underline your commitment to your home country.

2. Inability to articulate qualifications or travel plans

If you’re unable to clearly explain the purpose of travel , duration, and itinerary of your planned trip, it might raise doubts about the legitimacy of your visit. Even if an applicant is qualified, they may not have been able to convincingly explain their travel plans or qualifications during the visa interview.

It’s essential to establish a clear connection between your qualifications and the purpose of your trip to avoid confusion for visa officers. Additionally, non-verbal cues like body language and confidence levels can influence how well your qualifications and travel plans are perceived.

It is crucial to provide credible responses, avoiding inconsistency or vagueness, to ensure that the information provided is perceived as truthful. You can reduce your chances of U.S. visa rejection  by:

  • Highlighting your full qualifications, including education, employment, and family achievements, to showcase a promising future in your home country.
  • Make sure to clearly show how your qualifications directly relate to the activities you plan to engage in during your stay, emphasizing the legitimacy and necessity of your visit.

3. Lack of preparation

Applicants may not have prepared well enough for the visa interview, including being specific about their travel plans, ties, and finances. Visa officers are highly suspicious and look for discrepancies in your story. Be natural and honest, and provide complete information. Memorized or unnatural responses raise red flags. Do your research and be ready to discuss your travel plans and purpose confidently.

However, you can succeed in your interview by:

  • Preparing thoughtful and honest responses to address these points proactively during the interview is helpful.
  • Also, practice maintaining confident body language, eye contact, and expressing yourself clearly. Projecting confidence can have a positive impact on how your qualifications and travel plans are perceived.

4. Limited financial resources

Insufficient funds may weaken your visa application, so demonstrating financial stability is crucial to discourage concerns about overstaying. Not clearly showing that you have enough money for your planned journey can make the officials worry about whether you can cover your expenses during your stay.

It might make them doubt your financial planning if you’re not clear about how you’ll use the funds for your trip. To ease concerns about overstaying, it’s important to convincingly demonstrate your financial proof and ties to your home country.

In order to strengthen your visa application and avoid any kind of visa rejection:

  • Highlight legal obligations like mortgages, loans, or ongoing financial responsibilities to paint a complete picture of your financial stability.
  • Discuss ongoing financial commitments, such as property ownership, steady employment, or business ventures, emphasizing your attachment to your home country and the intention to return after the trip.
  • Clearly express your reasons for returning promptly, such as familial obligations, work commitments, or ongoing educational pursuits.
  • Discuss having sufficient funds for your trip and demonstrate financial stability back home.

5. Mistakes On DS-160 Form

Making mistakes on the DS-160 form can have serious implications for your visa application. The DS-160 form is crucial, as it provides vital information to the U.S. Department of State and consular officers responsible for assessing your eligibility for a nonimmigrant visa. It collects essential details about you, including personal information, contact information, and travel details. Errors or inaccuracies in this form can lead to visa rejection, emphasizing the importance of carefully and accurately completing the DS-160 to avoid any adverse outcomes.

Follow the immigration department’s documentation process and avoid submitting fake documents to prevent visa rejection and penalties.

There are certain things that you must keep in mind while dealing with visa application rules:

  • Review the visa application rules provided by the visa office and the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • Ensure all required documents are accurately completed and submitted in the specified format.
  • Seek assistance from a professional or reliable source to understand and comply with the visa application rules.
  • Double-check all documentation for accuracy and authenticity before submission.
  • Refrain from submitting any false or misleading information, which can lead to severe consequences.
  • Take the time to thoroughly review and verify all details to ensure the completeness and accuracy of your application.

6. Lack of Convincing Intent

Visa officers may refuse a visa if they are not convinced that the applicant intends to use the visa appropriately and legally. Visa officers look for clear and credible reasons for the visit, such as a well-defined academic plan for students or a detailed itinerary for tourists. If the officer perceives inconsistencies, vagueness, or doubts about the applicant’s intentions during the interview or through the application documentation, they may refuse the visa based on a lack of convincing intent. Therefore, it’s crucial for applicants to effectively communicate their genuine intentions and provide supporting documentation to demonstrate the legitimacy of their plans.

To overcome the issue of lack of convincing intent and avoid visa rejection, especially in the case of B1/B2 visa interview refusal, individuals can take the following steps:

  • Clearly articulate the specific purpose of the visit, whether it’s for tourism, business meetings, or family visits, and provide detailed information about the planned activities and itinerary.
  • Demonstrate strong ties to the home country, such as stable employment, property ownership, family connections, or other commitments, to assure the visa officer of the intention to return after the visit.
  • Communicate genuine and legitimate reasons for the visit, backed by supporting documentation, such as invitation letters, business correspondence, or travel itineraries, to substantiate the purpose of the trip.
  • During the interview, provide clear, honest, and consistent responses to the officer’s questions, avoiding vague or contradictory statements that could raise doubts about the intent of the visit.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive documentation, including financial records, travel bookings, and any relevant letters or contracts, to support the purpose and legitimacy of the visit.

7. Timing Of Your Visa Application

Careful planning of the timing of your visa application is essential. Different types of visas have varying processing times , so it’s important to consider this when applying. It’s advisable to apply for a visa at least 45 days before your intended travel dates to allow for processing.

Consider following the below recommendations to avoid any visa rejection:

  • Applying for a visa just a few days before your travel dates increases the likelihood of visa rejection.
  • Submitting your application at least 30 days before your travel date is recommended.
  • Seeking guidance from a visa counselor can also help you understand the duration of the visa application process and determine the best time to apply.

The timing of the visa application is a significant consideration, particularly given the current visa processing delays. Some applicants may find themselves with visa appointments scheduled shortly before their intended travel dates. This timing aspect is crucial and can impact the visa application process, especially in the context of current processing delays.

How To Overcome A Visa Rejection?

Coping with disappointment and stress after a visa rejection is important. It’s advised to stay positive and have positive self-talk, as rejection is not personal, and better preparation can improve the chances in the future. Remember, visa officers assess each case individually and consider various factors beyond these points.

US F-1 student visa rejection rates reach record levels

Us immigration officials may also have been potentially extremely subjective in student visa interviews..

US F-1 visa, international student, visa rejection reasons, Refusal rates, interviews

By Raghwa Gopal

In the United States, F-1 visa refusal rates have reached record levels, with over 250,000 international students turned away from studying in the country.

us visit visa rejection rate

In 2023, the refusal rate rose to 36 percent totaling 253,355 refusals, exceeding 2022 levels. It was also almost twice that of refusal for other visa types, ICEF Monitor reported.

Canada, Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Program, rules, language testing, international students

Economic impact and consequences

The direct economic effect of the visa refusals is estimated at over $7 billion annually.

Since a student can apply for an F-1 visa after getting accepted into a government-approved university, the refused students would have likely paid about $30,000 per year (or $7.6 billion per year in tuition and living expenses), and that number climbs to $30.4 billion over four years in lost economic gains for the US.

The more than 1 million international students at US HEIs contributed over $40 billion to the US economy during academic year 2022-23, up by nearly 19% or $6.3 billion from the previous year, and buoyed some 368,000 jobs , NAFSA noted.

There has been a 31% drop in visa issuances in the US from 2015 to 2023, and the increasing rate of student visa refusal has been likened to the situation in Australia.

Potential reasons behind high refusal rates

The rise in Indian student applications may be one, as those applicants received 29% of all issuances last year and historically are more likely to be refused a visa than their Chinese counterparts. Zooming out, Indian applications were likely very high in 2023.

US immigration officials may also have been potentially extremely subjective in student visa interviews. Experts have called on the Biden administration to be more transparent about such student visa denials, implementing a fair policy for reviewing student applications.

Trends and movements

Last year, the industry reported this trend of rising visa refusal rates. Yet despite rising rejection rates, student visa issuances in the US managed to exceed pre-COVID levels.

For insiders, this is a question of accessibility stemming from government policy, particularly as official visa data also unveils significant variations in rejection rates by regions worldwide:

54% of African students were denied F-1 visas in 2022, compared with a 9% rate for European students. Asian students, while faring better than African students, still had a 36% visa rejection rate – much higher than that for European students

What’s an F-1 visa?

The F-1 visa allows an international student to temporarily live in the US for a certain period while studying at a college or university certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

This non-immigrant visa is popular among students seeking to study at a US institution, where they can only apply for an F-1 visa after an accredited US institution accepts their application.

The requirements for an F-1 visa include institution certification, full-time enrollment, English language proficiency, adequate funding, valid passport, as well as proof of home country residence.

US Supreme Court Suggests Some Judicial Review for Visa Denials

By Kimberly Strawbridge Robinson

Kimberly Strawbridge Robinson

The Supreme Court suggested that it may allow a limited opportunity for US citizens to challenge a visa denial for their spouse.

But the justices at argument on Tuesday left it unclear how helpful some leeway would be for those seeking to bring their loved one to the US.

Sandra Muñoz, an American citizen, sued the State Department after her husband Luis Asencio-Cordero, a citizen of El Salvador, was denied a visa application.

Under the doctrine of consular nonreviewability courts generally can’t review visa denials for noncitizens for any reason. But there is a limited exception when the decision impinges the constitutional rights of a US citizen. In those cases, the government must provide a “facially legitimate and bona fide reason” for the denial.

A trial court agreed with the State Department that Muñoz couldn’t challenge the denial and dismissed the case. But the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit vacated that decision.

The appeals court said the the denial affected Muñoz’s rights related to her marriage and that the State Department’s bare-bones citation to the statute under which they denied Asencio-Cordero’s visa didn’t provide the kind of facially legitimate reason necessary to avoid judicial review.

Several justices appeared to agree that some limited judicial review was appropriate, but that Muñoz was asking for too much.

Previous cases don’t “require that much,” said Justice Amy Coney. But “you are asking for significantly more,” she told Muñoz’s attorney Eric Lee. “I guess I don’t see why” this isn’t “just game over.”

Providing more information could expose law enforcement and national security “sensitivities,” Justice Department lawyer Curtis Gannon told the justices.

Gannon said the State Department issued 11 million visas last year and denied 62,000 applications. The point of the limited exception to consular nonreviewability isn’t to allow courts to second guess all of those decisions, but instead to ensure that the government had a reason for the denial, Gannon said.

Chief Justice John Roberts wondered how to balance the government’s national security interests with the fundamental right to marriage. That’s like comparing “apples to giraffes,” Roberts said.

And Justice Neil Gorsuch wondered whether revealing a bit more about the State Department’s reasons would actually be harmful to national security.

Gorsuch noted that the government has since revealed that it denied the visa because it believes Asencio-Cordero is a member of the Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, gang. How does that implicate serious government information, Gorsuch asked Gannon. Asencio-Cordero denies any gang affiliation.

Justice Elena Kagan emphasized that the exception is extremely narrow and would provide only limited information. But it is “something,” Kagan said. Knowing that the government thinks her husband is a gang member gives Muñoz a lever to try to test the accuracy of the government’s claim.

Several justices wondered what comes next, noting that Muñoz now knows the reason that the State Department denied the visa.

“What more would you be entitled to?” Roberts asked Lee.

Lee said they wanted a reason so that they weren’t fighting the visa denial with their hands tied behind their backs.

You got that, Gorsuch said. “So why are we here?”

Lee responded that they need a declaration from a court that the State Department’s reason for denying the visa was inadequate.

That’s asking for more process than previous cases said was available under the limited exception to consular nonreviewability, Justice Brett Kavanaugh said. Those court’s cases “suggest that a facially legitimate, bona fide reason is enough,” Kavanaugh said. “And you stop there.”

“Courts will neither look behind the exercise” of the State Department’s “discretion nor test it,” Kavanaugh said. “That’s kind of it.”

The case is Department of State v. Munoz, U.S., No. 23-334, argued 4/23/24.

New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 AM EDT

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

US reports a significant spike in student visa refusals for 2022

  • The US rejected 35% of all F-1 student visa applications in 2022
  • This represents a significant increase in rejection rates compared to previous years
  • Rejections rates for Indian students are higher than average, suggesting that the surging applicant numbers from India play a part in shaping that overall trend

New data indicates that the US Department of State rejected 35% of applications last year for F-1 student visas. This is both a notable increase in the overall refusal rate for F-1 applicants, and also considerably higher than the average rate for other non-immigrant visa classes.

us visit visa rejection rate

In concrete terms, that amounts to 220,676 applications denied out of a total of 631,807 applications – meaning in turn that more than 411,000 F-1 visas were granted to incoming students in 2022.

"It is important to understand that before a student can even apply for a visa they must already be accepted into a government‐approved university," says the Cato Institute 's Associate Director for Immigration Studies, David Bier. "This means that the US Department of State turned down 220,676 students who would have likely paid roughly $30,000 per year or US$6.6 billion per year in tuition and living expenses. Over four years, that number rises to US$26.4 billion in lost economic benefits to the United States."

The reasons behind the higher refusal rates are not clear but it appears that the shifting mix of the United States' foreign student enrolment has played a part. Visa applications from Indian students have surged in recent years, and Mr Bier has also noted that rejection rates for Indian applicants are considerably higher than they are for applicants from China, the traditional leading source of students for the US.

us visit visa rejection rate

That higher refusal rate for Indian applicants does not appear to be based in any difference of policy, but rather on how US consular officials assess the study plans of Indian students. To illustrate this point, Mr Bier quotes the US head of consular affairs Don Heflin, who explained in a 2022 interview that students should:

"Bring [bank statements] just in case the vice consul asks, but we are looking at this less than we used to. We know Indian families usually find a way [to pay].… Mostly it’s about explaining why this school and this curriculum makes sense to you. It’s what in American English we call the Elevator Pitch. You’ll have a minute and a half to tell us why this [school] makes sense to you. Don’t walk up and recite something from memory about the campus, the student body, and how old the school is.… Listen, I have a lot of Indian friends. I know that your father may have told you where you were going to go to school and what you were going to study. That’s fine. Tell us what he told you. Show us that it makes sense for you."

If that is indeed an accurate reflection of the consular approach in India, it could certainly account for the higher rejection rates for Indian students.

However, it also speaks to a larger issue in the US in terms of the linkages between student visa policy and the larger economic and labour market requirements of the United States.

Another recent report from FWD.us , a US advocacy group concerned with immigration reform, points out that there are 7.5 million unfilled jobs in the US, and that new immigrants (including students) are a critically important talent pool for the US economy. It also argues that the existing pathways by which foreign graduates can go on to work and perhaps settle in the US, including Optional Practical Training and the H-1B work visa, are considerably overextended.

"The United States has come to rely on the temporary H-1B work visa as its main—and sometimes only—high-skilled immigration policy tool," notes the report. "This over-reliance on the H-1B visa program creates choke points in our talent pipeline where skilled individuals either cannot move forward or simply choose to leave. Since 1997, the full H-1B visa cap has been exhausted every year prior to the end of the fiscal year…Simply put, there is a profoundly higher demand for these skilled workers than the current law is able to supply."

us visit visa rejection rate

The paper goes on to argue for reforms to the US immigration system, including that:

  • H-1B visa caps be linked to employer demand
  • Class(es) of employment-related visas be expanded to "provide realistic alternatives to H-1B for employers who want to sponsor skilled immigrants for permanent residency"
  • An expedited path to citizenship be established for foreign graduates and entrepreneurs

"The United States already has some of the greatest talent on earth; the challenge now is keeping them here," concludes the report. "That will require developing new immigration programs for foreign-born startup founders, graduates of US universities, and high-skilled workers and their families."

Parents are being hammered by rising childcare costs, according to a new study that suggests they may spend more than £160,000 raising their child to the age of 18.

Research by Hargreaves Lansdown has found that parents with children pay £6,969 a year more than couples without.

Over 18 years and assuming an annual inflation rate of 3%, that amounts to a whopping £163,175, the investment platform said.

Its study also found that parents were less likely to have money left at the end of the month.

Single parents carry the biggest burden, with the research suggesting they have just £85 left on average compared to £365 for couples with children.

Hargreaves Lansdown also found just 23% of single parents reported having enough emergency savings to cover at least three months' worth of essential expenses, compared to 63% of couples with children.

Parents are also at a slight disadvantage when it comes to pensions, the research found, with only 43% of couples with children on track for a moderate retirement income, compared to 47% without. Only 17% of single parents have a decent projected pension fund.

Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at the firm, said "having children is one of the most expensive decisions a person can make".

She adds that as a result of having a child, "financial resilience suffers across the board", and added: "For single parents, life is even tougher, and they face far lower resilience on almost every measure.

"It means we need all the help we can get."

One of the top stories shaking up the markets this morning is that UK-based mining company Anglo American has rejected a major $38.8bn (£31bn) takeover bid.

Details of the attempted buyout by Australian rival BHP emerged yesterday  - sending Anglo American shares soaring.

The deal would have created the world's biggest copper mining company - with the news coming as the price of the metal hit record highs this week.

However, Anglo American has now dismissed the proposal as "opportunistic" and said BHP had undervalued the company.

Anglo's shares are slightly down by 0.8% this morning - suggesting investors may not have given up hopes that a deal could eventually be agreed.

However, overall the FTSE 100 is up around 0.4% this morning, buoyed by strong reported earnings from US tech giants Microsoft and Google owner Alphabet.

It's helped the index, of the London Stock Exchange's 100 most valuable companies, hit yet another intraday (during the day) record of 8,136 points this morning.

The winning streak comes after a week of all-time highs on the index - including a record close of 8,078 points yesterday. The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

Among the companies doing well this morning is NatWest - despite the bank reporting a fall in pre-tax profits of nearly 28% for the first quarter of the year.

Shares in the lender are up more than 3% after its results were better than expected by analysts.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.25 US or €1.16, almost on a par with yesterday.

Meanwhile, the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil has crept up slightly to $89 (£71).

Self-checkouts - they're like marmite, people seem to either love them or hate them.

But the boss of Sainsbury's has claimed that his customers do  enjoy using self-checkouts, despite criticism that that machines don't always provide the convenience promised.

Simon Roberts told The Telegraph that there are more of them in Sainsbury's stores "than a number of years ago" as shoppers like the "speedy checkout".

But despite this, he said there won't be a time when they'll replace cashiers completely.

"Over the last year, where we've put more self-checkouts in, we're always making sure that the traditional kind of belted checkout is there," he said.

His comments come after northern supermarket Booths ditched self-checkouts at all but two of its sites after customer feedback.

Walmart and Costco in the US have also scaled back on the systems.

Let us know in the comments - do you love or hate self-checkouts?

We've all heard consumer advice that's repeated so often it almost becomes cliché. So, every Friday the Money team will get to the bottom of a different "fact" and decide whether it's a myth or must.

This week it is...

'Smart meters save you money'

For this one, we've enlisted the help of Dr Steve Buckley, also known as the Energy Doctor and head of data science at Loop...

So do smart meters help you save?

"The short answer is both yes and no," Steve says.

"Installing a smart meter by itself won't magically reduce your energy consumption. But, by giving you easy access to your energy usage data, smart meters pave the way for savings that you couldn't achieve otherwise."

Before smart meters, most households only found out how much energy they had used when the bill arrived.

By that stage it's too late to address wasteful usage, leading to what's known as "bill shock".

"With a smart meter, you can see your usage and costs in real-time through an in-home display or an app provided by your supplier," Steve says.

"This immediate feedback encourages you to use less energy. If you measure it, you can control it."

In 2022, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero found that homes with smart meters used about 3.4% less electricity and 3% less gas.

"This might not seem like a lot, but it adds up to a saving of over £50 per household annually," Steve says.

If all homes in the UK made similar cuts, that would amount to savings of around £1.5bn and a potential reduction in CO2 emissions by about 2.7m tonnes each year.

"Good for individual households but also great for the planet," Steve says.

Smart meters are often installed at no extra cost to the consumer - it's effectively free data for households.

Limitations

Smart meters are more or less what you make of them - a simple, free tool that allows you to see headline figures.

However, "without detailed analysis, it's tough to identify and eliminate" where you could be wasting money, Steve says.

Apps like Utrack, Loop and Hugo Energy can help you work out where you might be losing money by offering a more detailed breakdown if connected to your smart meter.

Those tools are often free, but you may need to register your card details as proof of address.

The tools give a number of useful insights, including looking at consumption in other households of similar size or monitoring where chunks of your money are going, such as to a faulty boiler or the "phantom load" (energy wasted by devices left on unnecessarily).

Myth or must?

Although smart meters alone don't reduce energy bills, they are a vital tool to help energy efficiency and cost savings.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without spending a lot.

In this series, which ends today after digging into yoghurt, bread, pasta, fruit juice and plant-based milk, we've tried to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value.

Sunna Van Kampen,  founder of  Tonic Health ,  who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices, has given his input for the past six weeks.

And for the final part of the series, we're looking at the nation's favourite snack: crisps.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, but to help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

We're a people obsessed: in the UK, we get through six billion packets of crisps a year.

Sunna has three easy tips for finding the tastiest options that are kinder to your body...

1. Understand the fat facts

"Typical crisps can be oil sponges and contain over 30% fat from low-quality vegetable oils that have been fried," Sunna says.

"What we are on the lookout for those that buck the trend and stay away from the fat."

So, he says, aim for crisps that contain less than 15% total fat.

2. Fibre up your snack time

"While crisps aren't exactly salad, some can offer more nutritional value than others," Sunna says.

"Check the labels for options that have more fibre or protein."

These help you feel fuller for longer and also keep your digestive system happy.

3. Portion control

"It's easy to demolish an entire bag in one sitting - however, many brands offer multipack bags that are portion-controlled, usually around 25g a bag," Sunna says.

Sticking to these helps to manage calorie intake and stops overindulging.

The big picture

"Small changes might not immediately seem like a lot but if you eat a bag a day with your lunch, we are talking about up to a whopping two litres of oil cut from your diet over the course of the year," Sunna says,

"This is not permission to eat crisps every day (enjoy as an occasional treat) but rather an indication of how small changes add up quickly overtime."

The good news is Sunna's recommendations are all similar in price to their popular, fattier rivals - so you don't need to make a bigger investment to reap some health benefits.

We've included the prices for the brands' standard multipacks at Tesco - correct as of time of writing.

Walkers Oven Baked - £1.95 for six-pack

"Around £1.95 for a pack of six, these crisps are baked, not fried, slashing the fat content to 13%, so a great option."

Popchips - £2.25 for five-pack

"These have just 13% fat content as they're popped rather than fried so are a great way to go reducing fat without compromising on the crunch."

And for some non-crisp options...

ProperCorn Popcorn - £2 for six-pack

Often described as "the healthier, lighter option", Sunna says ProperCorn "isn't actually the best option on the market for fat content at 17.4%".

That being said, you do get "double the fibre of standard crisps at 10.9g per 100g".

At only £2 for a pack of six, it's well-priced, too.

Snack A Jacks - £2.20 for five-pack

"At only 8.3% fat per 100g, it's a great option at £2.20 for a pack of five."

Penn State Baked Pretzels - £1.50 for 175g bag

Now for Sunna's winner.

"The German classic is a great option at only 4.6% fat per 100g," he says.

One downfall is that they are not available in portioned bags, so be careful with the whole 175g bag for £1.50.

Want another option altogether?

"If you want to be even healthier, consider the switch to nuts, seeds or even dried cheese snacks," Sunna says.

"Higher in calories yes, but higher in good healthy fats too and are more satiating which will limit the chance of overeating."

The nutritionist's view -  from  Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food and health sciences at Teesside University...

"Baked instead of fried crisps is definitely a way forward as well as the popcorn suggestion," she says.

"We should also be aiming to look at the amount of protein and fibre found in products. For example, lentil and pea snacks are growing in popularity due to their higher protein and fibre values, so the focus should be more on looking for ingredients other than potatoes, oil and salt.

"I also feel 'crisp' based snacks made in an air fryer are becoming more popular. These can include a wholemeal wrap with a small amount of oil added, and placed in the air fryer with paprika and other seasoning added for flavour.

"Also, chickpeas in the air fryer make for a super delicious protein and fibre rich snack. They are cheaper than crisps and lower in fat since no oil has to be added."

Halifax has become the latest major lender to up mortgage rates.

They are putting up a range of deals by 0.2%.

BM Solutions also announced increases today.

It follows similar moves by TSB, NatWest, Virgin, Barclays, Accord, Leeds Building Society, HSBC and Coventry last week.

Lenders are responding to swap rates - which dictate how much it costs to lend money - rising on the back of higher than expected US inflation data, and concerns this could delay interest rate cuts there.

US trends often materialise elsewhere - though many economists are still expecting a base rate cut from 5.25% to 5% in the UK in June.

This is what average mortgage rates look like as of today...

Justin Moy, managing director of EHF Mortgages, told Newspage: "Yet more bad news for mortgage borrowers, as two of the biggest lenders announce increases to their fixed-rate products.

"As mortgage rates creep up and past 5% even for those with the largest deposits, we seem to be lacking a clear strategy of the government or the Bank of England on how rates will eventually fall.

"Even 2% inflation may not be enough to reverse the recent trends in rates."

Morrisons has launched two major changes for shoppers – with stores now offering travel money and trolleys featuring advertisements.

Announcing their bureau de change service, Morrisons said customers could exchange currencies in select stores or could place their money orders online at Morrisonstravelmoney.com.

Using the online service means customers can either click and collect their cash in certain Morrisons stores or at any of Eurochange's 240 branches. Alternatively, they can go for home delivery.

Services director at Morrisons, Jamie Winter, said the service "will provide our customers with easy access to a wide range of currencies at competitive exchange rates".

So far, stores in the following areas have travel money kiosks:

  • Basingstoke

In other news, the supermarket chain rolled out a new trolley advertising across 300 stores in a partnership with Retail Media Group.

A sweetener used in drinks, sauces, savoury and sweet foods and chewing gum can cause serious damage to people's health, according to a new study.

Neotame, a "relatively new" sweetener, could damage the intestine by causing damage to healthy bacteria in the gut, according to the study, leading it to become diseased and attack the gut wall.

The study by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, found the negative effect of neotame "has the potential to influence a range of gut functions resulting in poor gut health", potentially impacting metabolic and inflammatory diseases, neuropathic pain, and neurological conditions.

The illnesses this could lead to include irritable bowel disease or insulin resistance.

As we reported yesterday, a pilot programme is coming into force in Venice today that means visitors have to pay a €5 (£4.28) charge to enter the city.

Authorities say the pilot programme is designed to discourage tourists and thin the crowds that throng the canals during peak holiday season, making the city more liveable for residents.

Pictures have been emerging this morning of people queueing to register for a QR code that will allow them to enter after they have paid the charge - and officials carrying out checks on people inside the city.

People found to be contravening the rules can be fined up to €300 (£257).

As detailed in our story , the move has been met with anger among some in the city.

Venice is the first city in the world to introduce a payment system for tourists - but comments from its most senior tourist official suggested it may become a more common practice for major tourist hotspots in Europe.

Simone Venturini revealed the pilot programme was being closely watched by other places suffering from mass tourism - including other Italian art cities and hugely popular weekend-break destinations Barcelona and Amsterdam.

More than 160,000 people switched to Nationwide from other providers at the end of 2023, when the building society was offering a huge cash switching incentive.

According to figures from the Current Account Switch Service (CASS), Nationwide had a net gain of 163,363 account switchers between October and December, after leavers were taken into account.

It was the highest quarterly gain since the same period in 2022, when 111,941 switched to Nationwide.

The building society launched a £200 switching bonus for new joiners in September last year - the biggest giveaway on offer at the time. It withdrew the offer just before Christmas.

The latest CASS figures, which show Nationwide had 196,260 total gains before accounting for leavers, suggesting it could have spent up to £39m on nabbing customers from other providers in the last three months of the year.

Barclays and Lloyds Bank saw more modest net gains of 12,823 and 5,800 respectively, while the rest of the UK's big banks reported net losses.

NatWest and Halifax fared worst, losing over 40,000 more switchers each than they gained.

This week saw the last remaining switching offer on the market withdrawn.
