The Better Way to Cruise in Venice

Large ocean cruise ships are banned from the city’s historic center but smaller, more environmentally friendly ships can still sail in the venetian lagoon..

The Better Way to Cruise in Venice

A meal with a view onboard Uniworld’s newly remodeled S.S. “La Venezia.”

Courtesy of Uniworld

When I arrived in Venice to board the first European river cruise to host Americans since the start of the pandemic, I got that coveted and rare look at what this popular destination feels like without any ocean liners in port and minus the thousands of day-trippers they once dropped here on a regular basis.

Before the week was out, a few big ships had come and gone through the heart of the Venetian Lagoon, although those sailings would be short-lived. As of August 1, large ocean liners are banned from the city’s historic center .

But that doesn’t mean you can’t—and shouldn’t—still sail in the Venetian Lagoon.

My weeklong late June sailing on Uniworld Boutique River Cruises ’ new 126-passenger S.S. La Venezia offered a preview of what a unique treat it is to be able to explore Venice and beyond from the luxurious and slow-paced vantage point of one of the few, more environmentally friendly small ships (Uniworld is committed to at least 50 percent of its electricity being renewable by 2025 and banning single-use plastics by 2022, among other sustainability measures ) that will be able to continue to sail past the city’s landmarks and dock just steps away from St. Mark’s Square.

Imagine having your own floating boutique hotel in the heart of Venice.

Imagine having your own floating boutique hotel in the heart of Venice.

It wasn’t only the ease of having a floating luxury boutique hotel within walking distance of key attractions that made the cruise so enjoyable, it was also the relaxed nature of Uniworld’s Venice itinerary, which affords a much deeper dive into the destination than the typical, whirlwind day tours that conventional cruise ships and group tour companies offer.

Unlike most European river cruises that depart from one port and end in another, the Venetian Lagoon cruises by Uniworld and one other line, the more economical CroisiEurope, sail roundtrip from Venice. While we made a two-day jaunt up the Po River, the bulk of our cruise was spent in the lagoon, allowing plenty of time to explore Venice and nearby islands during off hours when you can better avoid the day-trippers who will no doubt be back in droves as larger ocean liners carry out plans to return to nearby ports.

I arrived by train from Rome late on a Sunday afternoon, in time to have dinner and take in sunset views of Venice’s waterways and skyline from the top deck.

Pandemic-related protocols

At that time, Italian regulations required a COVID test upon embarkation or within 24 hours of boarding, as well as a second test midweek and another before disembarking. Regulations can change on a dime during the pandemic, however, so travelers should verify what the latest rules are for U.S. cruise passengers in Italy at the time of travel.

Otherwise, protocols were no more intrusive than what most of us have come to expect in the age of COVID. Onboard, masks were required while walking the halls, but could be removed while outside or while seated in the dining and lounge areas.

Off the ship, Italy was still requiring masks both indoors and outside, although the outdoor mask requirement has since been dropped. And as of August 6, tourists and locals alike are required to have Italy’s so-called green pass , showing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test result in the last 48 hours to visit restaurants and many indoor venues.

Tests are readily available for free at train stations and pop-up clinics across the country and for about $25 at most pharmacies. This makes getting tested while in Italy easy, including for Americans needing the test required by the U.S. government for all international travelers entering the U.S. (including Americans returning home from abroad).

With larger cruise ships banned and fewer tourists due to the pandemic, for the time being you can visit Venice with fewer crowds.

Venice minus the masses

While the pandemic-related rules and restrictions can and have changed often in Italy and throughout Europe , I found navigating them well worth the opportunity to explore Venice without the typical tourist crowds.

On Uniworld’s inaugural sailing, there were fewer than 50 people on board, making for a private-yacht-like experience complete with butlers, farm-to-table dining, and small group excursions to some of the region’s most famous sites.

On our first full day in Venice, excursion options included a morning walk in Venice with a tour of the Doge’s Palace, as well as a private evening tour of St. Mark’s Basilica. I spent much of the day wandering the streets of Venice, which were delightfully void of the throngs of cruise passengers I encountered on my last trip here in 2019.

The city’s famed and formerly tourist-clogged canals were practically empty, although gondola captains stood at the ready. Street vendors, restaurants, and shops were mostly open, and there were enough tourists and locals on the streets and the waterfront to create the lively vibe one expects to find in any globally renowned city such as Venice.

The next afternoon we set out toward the Po River, sailing just inside the lagoon, past numerous colorful fishing villages on the barrier islands that separate the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea.

Uniworld’s Venice sailings also take passengers to more remote stretches along Italy’s Po River.

Uniworld’s Venice sailings also take passengers to more remote stretches along Italy’s Po River.

Stops included Chioggia, known as little Venice, where I joined a cycling excursion that took us on a relaxing 90-minute ride across two islands and to the channel that connects the lagoon to the Adriatic Sea.

The next day’s included excursion was a day trip to Bologna, complete with a pasta-making class.

The following day it was back to Chioggia, where we spent the morning wandering the village’s weekly street market before setting sail into the lagoon for an overnight stop at Uniworld’s new, private dock on Burano, which offers easy on-and-off walking access to the island best-known for its colorful houses and lacemakers.

The final two days allowed for leisurely sailing and solo or group exploration around Venice and the lagoon. Excursion options included a trip to one of Murano’s famed glass-blowing centers.

The entire experience reminded me what is so wonderful about small-ship cruising (the great service, the carefree nature of not having to pack and unpack more than once, the slower pace), and what I don’t miss about larger ships, especially in a place as magical and threatened as Venice.

Perhaps somewhat ironically, the S.S. La Venezia is Uniworld’s top-to-bottom overhaul of the River Countess , which made headlines when it was rammed by a cruise ship in 2019 as it sat docked in the heat of Venice. That accident renewed years-long calls for the recently enacted ban on large ships.

Many of the guests on my cruise had originally been scheduled to sail just after that collision, which took the ship out of service for a few months before its already planned upgrade. Instead, they got to sail on the newly refurbished ship with a perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the region at its uncrowded best.

There is nowhere else on earth like Venice. The busy city’s streets of water and the tiny islands of its lagoon combine in a unique UNESCO enclave. The tour is a similarly fitting combination, quietly based on an elegant boat, with all the sights at the foot of the gangplank

Since its medieval golden days, Venice has been revered for its art and architecture. Known as La Serenissima, the marble city is squeezed onto a hundred islets, interwoven with canals and bridges, a great, flamboyant, living museum. The lagoon is a broad but shallow spread around it, dotted with sleepy islands, some all but abandoned, others brimming with old world charm. Making full use of the watery topography, this tour is based aboard the stylish cruiser, MS Michelangelo; calmly removed from the crowds, while effortlessly visiting the unmissable sights. The ‘best of both worlds’ concept extends to the itinerary in a flexible blend of included activities, optional excursions, and time for independent exploration. Two cruises on the lagoon are included, the first at the northern end, to rural Mazzorbo, linked by a long footbridge to Burano Island and its impossibly pretty rows of pastel painted houses; the second floating south, past tiny islets, to the leisurely pace of Choggia. Optional excursions include the city’s must-see monument, St Mark’s Basilica; Murano Island, its canal-sides awash with displays of its famous glass; a walk through less-visited Venice; and historic Padua, home to Italy’s largest piazza.

Fly to Venice, and transfer to the mooring to board the   MS Michelangelo for four nights. (D)

Key: B - Breakfast L - Lunch D - Dinner

- Itinerary -

An optional tour this morning takes you to the city’s most famous and most visited monument, St. Mark’s Basilica, a gorgeous blend of Gothic and Byzantine architectural styles, and a visual feast of beautiful bas-reliefs, 18th century sculptures, ancient and oriental art, gilded screens, marble floors, and more than 4,000sq.m. of medieval mosaics (£50, pre-bookable). The lunchtime cruise on the lagoon sails to Mazzorbo and lets you explore the picture-postcard island of Burano, known for its lacemaking. Later, relish free time in the rural simplicity of Mazzorbo, perhaps viewing its monastery and 14th   century belltower; or join an optional excursion to Murano, its seven islets stapled together by bridges, boasting its own basilica and Grand Canal, and famous for its fabulous hand-crafted glass (£53, pre-bookable). Cruise back to Venice. (B, L, D)

This morning, discover the little-known neighbourhoods of Venice on an optional walking tour. Lively Cannaregio retains its authentic character, with casual canal-side eateries and the artisan shops on its Strada Nova. The Castelletto district stretches eastward from the heart of town, its waterfront  riva  running through residential streets, and public gardens, to little bridges, humble houses, and restaurants where locals always outnumber tourists. End the tour with an aperitif and cicchetti (appetisers) at a typical osteria (£64, pre-bookable). The rest of the day is yours to explore the ‘marble city’, its multiple museums, fantastic façades, and omnipresent art. Perhaps take a gondola ride; visit the Renaissance Rialto Bridge; and savour the splendour of St. Mark’s Square, from its centrepiece basilica to the stunning Doges’ Palace, the spires and statues of its ‘Paper Gate’, and the Bridge of Sighs, linking the palace with the prison. Pre-dinner Jules Verne drinks party aboard. (B, L, D)

Choose one of the three options offered in flexible plans for your final day. Spend the whole day in Venice for independent exploration; stay aboard the MS Michelangelo for a relaxing day, cruising southbound through the lagoon, calling in at the fishing port of Chioggia, and gently cruising back to Venice in the afternoon; or enjoy the morning cruise to Chioggia and disembark there for an optional tour by road to Padua, re-joining the boat back in Venice (£60, pre-bookable). Renowned for its art, architecture, and religious heritage, Padua’s university dates from the 13th century, as does the vast St. Anthony’s Basilica, crowned with Byzantine domes, its Baroque interiors adorned with priceless artworks, and holding the tomb of the saint. Gala Dinner aboard this evening. (B, L, D)

Disembark and transfer to Venice airport for your return flight. (B)

Whilst the vessel carries more, the excursion group size is limited to 30 (50 for Padua). Optional excursions are subject to minimum numbers and include some long walks.

he exact location of the moorings is at the discretion of the Venice port authorities, normally Riva Sette Martiri, Marittima or San Basilio.

Cabins are available from 5pm on arrival and until 9am on departure (before/after this, luggage storage on board is possible).

The programme may be altered due to navigational factors with locks, water levels or congestion at certain sites.

Optional Excursions

St. Mark’s Basilica, Venice

An optional morning tour of St. Mark’s Basilica

Saint Mark’s Basilica is considered a Byzantine masterpiece, and for that reason, it is one of the most important churches in the city. Construction began in 1063 as a Byzantine-style edifice, which over the centuries was accented with Gothic arches and mosaics. Having seen it throughout the decades as a backdrop to scenes in movies, visitors flock from all over the world just to stand in the spectacular square.

Murano

Murano Island Tour

A short boat ride will take us to the island of Murano. The largest island in the lagoon, Murano is famous all over the world for its unique glass. We’ll visit a glassblowing studio to see how it’s done. Take advantage of some free time afterwards to explore the island on your own. Murano is also known for its lovely churches and several remarkable  palazzetto .

Venice

Morning optional walk of Venice neighbourhoods

Venetian cuisine is brimming with variety and delicacies. It incorporates the diverse backgrounds of the Venetian population to propose the best the sea and land have to offer in the region. The Rialto Market (closed on Sunday) in the San Polo District is the natural starting point for this tour. We’ll stroll among the vegetable and fruit stands and witness the fishmongers in action. After, we’ll leave the hustle and bustle of the crowds behind us and head over to the laid-back Cannaregio District to poke around at what it has to offer. At the end of the tour, we’ll take a seat in a typical osteria to snack on cicchetti, Italian tapas-like morsels.

Padua, Italy

Optional excursion to Padua

Transfer by coach from Chioggia to Padua. Best known in Christianity as the Saint Antoine of Padua city, it is also famous for its art. Giotto (1267-1337, painter, sculptor and Italian architect) gifted the city of Padua some of his masterpieces, enriching the artistic scenery of the city. We'll start off with a guided tour of the city by coach before visiting the basilica which holds the vault of Saint Antoine. You'll be able to admire Donatello's bronze statue from the 15th century in the square before the basilica. This art piece was a major influence on sculptors of the Italian Renaissance. A guided tour on foot will take you to the Piazza delle Erbe and the Piazza dei Frutti which holds a fresh produce market every day. You'll then see the Palazzo della Ragione (exteriors only) and the Torre dell'Orologio with its astronomical clock dating back to 1344. You'll enjoy some free time to discover this charming city on your own. We'll be back on board in Venice.

Venice St Mark's Cathedral

Please note that due to Italian regulations these ships cannot take passengers when sailing the Adriatic Sea between the Venice lagoon and the mouth of the River Po.

Here are a few highlights of a cruise around Venice:

  • Venice, home to iconic sights including St Mark’s Square and the Grand Canal
  • UNESCO-listed city of Verona, the setting for Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’
  • Colourful island of Burano, renowned for its lace making
  • Art galleries of Murano, a centre of glass-making
  • Pretty island of Chioggia in the Venetian Lagoon
  • Renaissance buildings and grand squares of Mantua
  • The ornate Scrovegni Chapel in the walled city of Padua
  • The small island of Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon
  • Polesella, gateway to the cities of Bologna and Ferrara
  • Luxury boutiques in the fashion capital of Milan

The Venice cruise was a wonderful few days and I would certainly recommend it.

Some highlights:

1.The excursions which were very good value. I particularly liked Burano - a very pretty little island. The morning in Chioggia was very enjoyable. The market was great fun and the Church of St Dominic had some lovely pictures including a Tintoretto. The visit to Padua was made special by our English speaking guide who was very informative, never boring and had a wonderful sense of humour! She showed us round St Anthonys Basilica, a fascinating and beautiful church, and pointed out the famous Cafe Pedrucci whose speciality is a creamy mint coffee - highly recommended! (Tip - its cheaper if you drink it standing at the bar!)

2.Exploring Venice. Lovely little shops -especially for leather, Murano glass, and paper. Beautiful everywhere you look especially the glimpses down the little canals- we even saw a bride and groom going to church in a gondola! The Rialto area was very crowded but we found a lovely quiet campo where we sat in the sun for lunch and a much -needed rest before going to the Accademia. (Tip- if over 65 take your passport and get in free.) Although we saw some lovely pictures I was a bit disappointed in this gallery as a lot of the rooms were closed and there were no explanations and the attendants were very unhelpful. Our spirits were unexpectedly restored in the nearby Guggenheim Collection which has some amazing modern sculptures set in a beautiful garden and a very good collection of pictures. A quiet green haven and a good cafe - not to be missed!

3.The meals on board were superb and they were very generous with the free wine! In fact every one took wonderful care of us and made sure we understood all the arrangements which were often explained to us at our table in English by our English-speaking stewardess. The cabins were very comfortable and I had a beautiful view of the lagoon and Venice. We were very conveniently situated with just a short walk along the quay to St Marks square.

As you can see from the pics you even organised the weather for us! Many thanks to everyone at Blue Water Holidays for an excellent holiday.

Thank you, Blue Water, you arranged everything very well from start to finish. Venice was magical.

We stayed on the Michelangelo in Venice from 5th to 9th March and had a wonderful experience. The staff and crew were efficient, courteous and friendly. The cabins were roomy and kept spotlessly clean. After the embarkation at the St. Basilio Quay the ship was moored for the rest of the trip just a 15 minute walk along the lovely quayside from Giardini to St. Marks Square. This central location was vital for me as I use a wheeled walking aid and my husband was able to carry it over the bridges where necessary and we could then use the vaporetti to tour the Grand Canal. The food was of outstanding quality served by professional, friendly staff. Each meal was superb and inventive and the vegetarian dishes served to my daughter were imaginative and of equal standard to the non vegetarian - often vegetarians are fobbed off with omelettes! We were even lucky enough to have dry, sunny weather (if a bit chilly!). The lounge, deck and dining room were beautiful and the lounge had a selection of board games for those needing a rest from the touring and eating!

As a disabled traveller using a wheeled walking aid (and having a fit husband) I found Venice an excellent location but I would think for a wheelchair user the stepped bridges, with very few of them having an electric lift and none ever seeming to be in use, would be rather challenging.

Today you'll arrive at Venice Marco Polo airport, where you'll meet your transfer and later board SS La Venezia, your home for the week. You'll have some spare time to unpack and settle into your Riverview Stateroom before dinner.

After an early breakfast on board, you'll pay an early morning visit to Doge's Palace to explore this usually busy site in peace. You'll enter through a side door, which is usually reserved for dignitaries and VIPs.

Later, take a stroll through a traditional Venetian neighbourhood to see how local life unfolds in this fascinating city. Tonight, you'll attend a private after-hours lighting ceremony inside St Mark's Basilica without the crowds.

After breakfast on your ship, you'll have a choice to visit either Vicenza or Padua - both UNESCO World Heritage Cities.

In the afternoon, following your city tour, you'll reboard the ship for a scenic journey across the lagoon towards Burano and Mazzorbo.

This evening, your captain will host a special welcome reception and dinner on SS La Venezia.

This morning you'll visit Torcello's basilica, the oldest church in the Venetian lagoon. You'll be joined by an art historian who'll share an expert commentary as you explore. The doors open early for you, so you can see the stunning 11th-century mosaic of the Last Judgement without the crowds-and with expert commentary from your art historian guide. There's time for coffee in a traditional osteria before returning to the ship.

In the afternoon you can decide whether to explore Burano or Mazzorbo or watch a glass-blowing demonstration on Murano.

Today, you'll admire the greatest sites of charming and coastal Chioggia, a seaside town south of Venice. Older than Venice, this enchanting town boasts picturesque canals, brightly-coloured buildings, and traditional markets. It's often nicknamed 'Little Venice' and has some similarities with its larger neighbour while being a lot less crowded.

Wander along the stylish seafront promenade and perhaps sample some of the mouthwatering seafood the town is known for.

This morning, you'll explore the Po Delta at the point where the Adriatic Sea meets the Po River on a sailing excursion. This area is lush with forests and green pinewoods, and has abundant flora and fauna including over 300 species of birds.

Later on you'll sail back to Venice over lunch.

Today you'll board a water taxi to glide through the Venice canals, arriving in style at the Rialto Bridge. From here you can visit Rialto market, take a walking tour or visit a mask atelier to see how the intricate masks worn at the Carnival of Venice are made.

A special Captain's Farewell Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you this evening.

After a final breakfast on board, you'll disembark S.S. La Venezia and a transfer will take you to the airport for your flight back to London.

Glamorous Uniworld ship sailing the Po and Venice Lagoon

Paying homage to classic Venetian style, the S.S La Venezia is no ordinary cruise ship. This elegant vessel was renovated in 2020, bringing a new level of luxury and decadence to river sailing. With nods to its locale, the ship features Murano glass and splendid gilding that add to a sparkling onboard atmosphere. All the staterooms are river-facing with marble bathrooms and luxury amenities.

A Venice river cruise: exploring the Brenta canal on a Burchiello boat

Madeline Jhawar

Spending a day on a Venice  river cruise along the Brenta canal has been on my Italy want-to-do list for years, and this summer I finally booked it. The canal that links Venice and Padova has interesting bridges, locks that work according to Leonardo Da Vinci’s designs, and villas with a fascinating history. This is no shipping route: the historic Burchiello boats of three centuries ago belonged to nobility, who built party villas and summer homes along the Brenta canal and sailed from Venice on holiday, and to see and be seen.  With the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797, the partying ceased, the original Burchiello boats were destroyed, and many of the villas fell into disrepair. But today’s route – done in a comfortable river cruiser with a snack bar on board – still gives a great sense of how the nobility lived between the 16th and 18th centuries, and is a great way to see some of the pretty countryside outside of Venice.

Bridges and Locks on the Brenta canal

As we sailed to Padova, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the other boats, the cyclists on canal-side paths, and soaking up the countryside scenery. But my kids were more interested in the action, and their eyes lit up when we hit bridges or locks. There are 9 swing bridges and 6 locks on the route between Venice and Padova . In the photo below, we’re in one of the locks and my kids are watching the water rise, waiting for our boat to rise to the same height as the river in front of us (though in this photo they are looking out the back of the boat, so the water behind us is lower).

Each time we approached a bridge, the guide called ahead to make sure the bridge would swing or lift so our boat could pass. Many of them were automatic (still requiring a person to press a button, always greeted by the guide with a friendly ciao! ) but there were a few manual historic bridges such as this one:

The villas of the Venice river cruise!

We stopped at three villas, where our (fantastic!) guide gave an in-depth tour in both English and Italian. The first stop was Ca’ Foscari, by the famous architect Andrea Palladio .

Ca Foscari Palladio Brenta Canal Venice

An original etching shows what Ca’ Foscari looked like in its heyday, and in the same etching you can also see the original Burchiello boats. The boats would be rowed with oars from Venice, but along this part of the canal the Burchiello was attached to a rope and pulled by a horse who walked along a path on the side of the canal:

Our guide pointed out many more villas as we sailed along the route – there were originally more than 40; many designed not as residences, but solely for parties, which could last days. Inside, the villas were full of art: frescoed walls, Tiepolo oil paintings, gilt furniture.  The Villa Pisani , a Doge’s Palace and famous as the site where Hitler and Mussolini first conferred, was our final stop and was incredible both inside and out:

This painting below, inside the Villa Pisani, is a great example of the focus on the hedonistic lifestyle of the day: the nobility who spent time in the villas of the Brenta canal between the 16th and 18th centuries was focused on pleasure and enjoyment.

Taking a Venice river cruise on the Brenta canal: The Logistics

  • The boats depart from Venice or Padova, and the route takes a full day, though you can meet the boat and board or disembark at the halfway mark. Check the routes and days they run here  because not every route runs every day.
  • At the end of the day, unless you brought your luggage, you need to get back to where you started. We were able to buy bus tickets on board, but the return transfer is not included in the tour price. If you end in Padova, as we did, it’s simpler to take a bus back to Venice rather than walk 20 minutes to the train station and take the train back. If you end in Venice, the boat arrives on Riva degli Schiavoni  (near the Londra Palace hotel), so you could get a vaporetto (public boat) to the train station.
  • The guide was absolutely excellent and talked practically non-stop the entire day. She did the whole tour in both English and Italian. Our group was divided pretty equally, so she would do her speech once in one language, and then repeat it in the other language.
  • There is a lunch stop, but it’s not included in the price of the tour. The boat stops at the “Il Burchiello” restaurant, which isn’t really close to anything else, and you don’t really have enough time to venture off on foot in search of an alternate lunch place. However, there are a few options: you can pre-book a 3-course meal at the restaurant; or you can arrive and order a-la-carte (which is what we did, and it worked well, and the food was great) but then you won’t have time to order 3 courses; or you can order a picnic lunch that the restaurant will prepare for you and you can sit in the restaurant’s outdoor space and eat it.
  • And, an obvious-but-worth-mentioning tip: since you’re on a boat for an entire day, bring hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, and wear layers.

One final note: This is not a sponsored post. I paid my own way on this trip, and would definitely recommend it.

ARRIVE IN SPLIT

The elegant MS Stella Maris will be waiting to welcome you as you arrive in Split and transfer to the harbour where we stay for the evening.

After a warm welcome from the crew, there's time to settle into your cabins and venture ashore to begin exploring. After your journey, we wouldn't blame you for wanting to stop for a drink in one of the bars facing the twinkling waters of Adriatic. Or if you want to stretch your legs, you could wander the ancient maze of narrow streets and little squares. Only a ten-minute walk away are the palace's golden gates and the gigantic statue of Grgur Ninski – a medieval Croatian bishop. Touch his toe for good luck (not that you'll need it on this holiday).

As the sun begins to set, it'll be time to find your way back to the ship for a delicious welcome dinner on board.

Split waterfront, Croatia

SPLIT - ŠIBENIK

This morning, enjoy a walking tour of the famous sights. Any pop culture fans might recognise Emperor Diocletian's palace as the Slave City of Meeren on Game of Thrones, but this huge palace is impressive in its own right. As one of the greatest structures of the Roman Empire, no expense was spared in its construction - the best Italian marble, with columns and sphinxes from Egypt, and today tall medieval buildings still line the streets, buttressed by unmistakably Roman columns. But if you're expecting to see a museum here, you'd be wrong - the complex is a living part of the city. Shops, restaurants, churches, and houses are built into the very fabric of these ancient walls.

Then, you can watch the city fade as we set sail for Šibenik and enjoy lunch on board.

Later this afternoon, we arrive in Šibenik, a medieval town with not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From the fortress at the top of the hill, the city seems to tumble down the hillside towards the sea. On our guided tour, we'll stroll down the marble-slabbed promenade between the huddles of cafes that line the tangled streets until we find the old town. The shady squares and winding streets lead to St James Cathedral - which blends Gothic and Renaissance styles - and a restored Renaissance town hall.

After our tour, there's time at leisure to continue to explore. Near the harbour, you'll see faded awnings advertising pivo and posip - beer and wine. Give in to temptation. With a long tradition of winemaking and viticulture in the Šibenik region, it's the perfect excuse to try lasina or babić wine - both are grown and produced locally.

St. James Cathedral, Šibenik

ŠIBENIK - MURTER - ZADAR

Today, we'll get to experience a concept coined by the Dalmatians that has no equivalent in English: fjaka - a lazy mood of complete contentment.

You can start your morning slowly as we cut through the waves on MS Stella Maris. There's time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and watch views of the coastline glide past. As we reach the small island of Murter, we'll drop anchor in the emerald-green waters for a chance to cool off with a swim stop.

Later, from the ship, you'll spot our next destination, Zadar. The magnificent walled city twinkles in the sunshine that's typical of the Adriatic.

On our guided tour, we'll see a captivating mix of ancient Roman ruins, medieval architecture and modern attractions. During time at leisure, linger by the waterfront to hear the rhythmic sounds of the Sea Organ and, as night falls, enjoy the Sun Salutations installation that utilises the sun's rays to create a light show from sunset to sunrise.

Old ivory buildings with gently sloping roofs and deep overhanging eaves give the city an Italian feel. Streets - paved with marble that's been polished with centuries of wear - lead to a Venetian fortress, turned public park, partly hidden by a canopy of trees. Even the modern cafés hide historical secrets - like the 1,000-year-old chapel tucked away at the back of Kavana Lovre. Coffee is another Croatian essential: first thing, mid-morning, after lunch, mid-afternoon, dusk, at midnight, it's always coffee time - so there's plenty of places to stop and watch the world go by.

Dinner tonight is up to you - but if you want a recommendation, try grilled meats or freshly caught fish, rounded off with a glass of maraschino - a local cherry liqueur.

Aerial view of Zadar

ZADAR - RAB

After an evening in the Port at Zadar, we'll enjoy a leisurely morning cruising the Croatian coastline. We'll stop en route for a swim in some of the clearest water you'll ever swim in. (If you choose not to swim, don't miss the scenery from the top deck for your first "oh wow" moment of the day).

We'll continue our journey to the island of Rab. Known as a safe anchorage on the Medieval trade route from Venice to Constantinople, Rab's ancient stone buildings, Romanesque architecture and grand Italianate houses are a legacy of Venetian rule. It is one of the busiest islands around Kvarner, gaining popularity after Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson brought the world's press in the summer of '36. Local lore says the pair were granted special permission to skinny-dip in the nearby Kandarola Bay - scandalous in those times. The island's golden beaches are the perfect place to sunbathe or take a dip (although, unlike the Duke, we recommend keeping your bathing suit on).

With an evening here, there's plenty of opportunity to find dinner in one of the restaurants or relax in a bar by the waterfront while watching boats rocking gently.

Top tip: Try one of the stylish seafood restaurants tucked away in the old town, serving the catch of the day - simply fried with white wine, garlic and herbs.

City of Rab

RAB - MALI LOŠINJ

The morning is yours to spend at leisure in the comfort of our first-class vessel as we sail. You can enjoy a delicious lunch on board and a refreshing swim stop (assuming that the sea cooperates, of course) before our next stop, Mali Lošinj.

Nestled on the southern side of the Bay of Lošinj on the island of the same name. Its remoteness - it is only possible to reach in a small plane or, as we do, by ship - explains the lack of crowds. As the more commercial part of the island, it's a great place to shop and people-watch. You could stroll through the eye-catchingly colourful former sea captains' homes, which date back to the 19th century. Throughout the city, architecture lovers will spot the influence of the island's different rulers - including the Venetian Republic and the Austro-Hungarian Empire - all over the charming coastal town.

Some may know Losinj for the Croatian Apoxyomenos, the restored Greek statue of a young athlete discovered off the coast - which now resides in a museum in Mali Lošinj and is well worth a visit during your time on the island.

Tonight, you're in for a treat with a delightful Captain's Dinner - it's always a guest favourite.

Mali Lošinj

MALI LOŠINJ - PULA

There'll be time to relax this morning as we sail out of Mali Lošinj and scope out the perfect place to stop and swim on our way to Pula.

Pula comes into view as we reach the tip of the Istrian peninsula - this great vantage point helped protect the bay. Its strategic location is probably why it's had so many foreign rules - from the Romans in 1 BC to the Austro-Hungarians (who still have a foothold here today).

On our guided tour, we'll see the remnants of these great empires. One highlight that's hard to miss is the magnificent amphitheater with a network of limestone arches that stand three storeys high. It's one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Croatia, and the sixth-largest amphitheater in the world. With a capacity for over 22,000 spectators, it's bigger than the O2 Arena - although why such a big theatre was built in such a small Roman town remains a mystery. Our Tour Manager swears that if you listen closely, you can hear the echos of the gladiatorial spectacles that used to unfold here.

Architectural shards of history litter the town squeezed between more modern houses and adorning little squares amongst a tangle of streets. We'll also see the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii, built between 29 and 27 BC to honour the Sergii family who fought for Octavian in the Battle of Actium. We'll spend time in the old town's square, with the imposing Temple of Augustus and the town hall with its Renaissance arcade. Other highlights include a historic cathedral and bell tower, interesting little churches and city gates, as well as an archaeological museum with a wealth of Roman exhibits.

After our guided walk here, gain a glimpse into Pula's soul with a stroll down Ria Ulica, the main waterfront street. Traditional yew and cypress trees line one end and, from the other, you can watch your dinner go from sea to table as sea and wind-ravaged fishing boats decant their catch onto the quayside.

The cuisine - a mix of seafood and Italian dishes - pair perfectly with the fruity flavours of a native istarska malvazija white wine. (Of course, you could choose any drink, but why settle for your usual when a delicious local vintner is on offer?)

Pula Amphitheater Arch

PULA - BRIJUNI NATIONAL PARK - POREČ

A brief early morning sail brings us to Brijuni National Park, an archipelago of 14 islands and inlets surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic.

Sit back and relax as we tour the park on a land train following the coastline past a Venetian citadel and 20th-century farm buildings. Over 100 different types of birds call the national park home, so remember to pack your binoculars for a bit of bird watching.

We'll return to the ship for lunch and savour our last journey on board MS Stella Maris as we navigate to the former Roman town of Poreč, located in the heart of the western coast of Istria.

On arrival, we'll take a brief orientation tour followed by time at leisure to explore as you wish. The town's rich history dates back to the prehistoric era, with notable settlements during the Roman times and in the 13th to 18th century while under Venetian rule. As a result, Poreč has history seeping out of every alleyway, including a 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica - known for its beautiful gold mosaic - which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is well worth a visit.

Aerial view of Brijuni National Park

POREČ & VENICE

We'll say goodbye to our home for the last seven nights as we disembark MS Stella Maris and board a catamaran from Poreč to Venice.

You may have seen it in pictures, but nothing can prepare you for how beautiful Venice is up close. It has a dreamy, almost magical feel. Around you, tourists and locals alike look up in wonder at the lavish palazzos. Not even the watermarks can deter you from its beauty. But don't waste time wondering how this seemingly floating city still stands after all of these centuries, there's too much to see on our guided tour.

No visit is complete without a trip to St Mark's Square, home to the Campanile Tower and the Basilica - a luxuriously decorated Byzantine structure with a shimmering mosaic-clad façade. We wouldn't be surprised if you come back here later - during time at leisure - to explore further. The 323 steps to the top of Campanile Tower are well worth the effort as you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the city from just under 100 metres up.

Nearby is Doge's Palace, a spectacular Gothic building once home to the head of state of the Republic of Venice, offering a glimpse into the life of a Venetian official. And, of course, we won't miss a chance to see the iconic Bridge of Sighs with its rather grim history.

Lunch at leisure is a great opportunity to find Venetian dishes in one of the many small restaurants throughout the city. Ask your guide or Tour Manager for the best places to eat for the most authentic cuisine - they'll know the lesser-known spots the locals love.

We check into our hotel for the next two nights, and the rest of the day is yours to continue exploring the city - or enjoy blissful idleness wiling away the hours, spritz in hand, in a cafe overlooking the canals (this is a no-judgement zone).

Streets of Venice

Today will be the day to put your research skills to the test and discover Venice for yourself as you spend the entire day at leisure.

For those who love an action-packed itinerary, there's plenty to see and do.

The world-famous Accademia will be a hit for any art enthusiast (or anyone looking to learn).  The gallery features a staggering collection of Venetian masterpieces, including outstanding works by Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Rosalba Carriera, and Canaletto. And if you don’t know these artists yet, the Accademia will give you the most atmospheric introduction.

You could take a stroll through the vibrant Jewish Quarter and explore its winding streets and historic buildings, including the Jewish Museum of Venice - which showcases the history and culture of the Jewish community - and five fascinating synagogues.

Looking for souvenirs? You'll find traditional Venetian shops tucked under streets covered with canopies of washing stretched high between crumbling buildings. Or you could join the lively throng of shoppers at the traditional Rialto market and enjoy the sights and smells of the fresh Mediterranean products sold here. The stalls are a treat for the senses with artistic piles of seasonal fruits, vegetables and fish as far as the eye can see - you won't be hungry for long here.

ARRIVE IN VENICE

Land in Venice, one of the world's most extraordinary cities, and transfer to our centrally located hotel, where we'll stay for two nights.

In 1814, over two years before Lord Byron settled in Venice (if you can call it that – after all, he's rumoured to have had over 200 lovers in less than three years), he wrote, 'I want to see Venice, the Alps and Parmesan cheeses.' It's not hard to see why the city is on so many people's wish lists (including ours) as the only city in the world built entirely on water.

You may have seen it in pictures, but nothing can prepare you for how beautiful Venice is up close. It has a dreamy, almost magical feel. Around you, tourists and locals alike look up in wonder at the lavish palazzos. Not even the watermarks can deter you from its beauty. But don't waste time wondering how this seemingly floating city still stands after all of these centuries, there's too much to see.

After checking out your hotel, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. As you wander its picturesque streets, there’s a view to make you stop in awe at every turn. You’ll stumble upon exquisite churches, Renaissance buildings and the unmistakable Grand Canal, its banks lined with shops and atmospheric restaurants. Enjoy drinks or dinner on a table by the quayside, soaking in the atmosphere as classic gondolas gently rock on the calm water - a sight you can only see in Venice!

PULA - MALI LOŠINJ

Situated near the tip of the Istrian peninsula, Pula was a great vantage point from which to protect the bay and an important administrative city.

Throughout history, the city has had many foreign rulers, including the Romans - who conquered the city in the 1st century BC - and later the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, who created a large naval port here and still retains active shipyards today.

On our guided tour, we'll see the remnants of these great empires. One highlight that's hard to miss is the magnificent amphitheatre with a network of limestone arches that stand three storeys high. (If you choose not to swim, don't miss the scenery from the top deck for your first "oh wow" moment of the day).

We'll stop this morning in the crystal-clear waters of the Kvarner Gulf for a leisurely swim stop looking out to rocky coastlines and verdant islands.

Old ivory buildings with gently sloping roofs and deep overhanging eaves give the city an Italian feel. See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

venice river cruises

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

venice river cruises

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

venice river cruises

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

venice river cruises

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

venice river cruises

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

venice river cruises

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

venice river cruises

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

venice river cruises

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

venice river cruises

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

venice river cruises

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

venice river cruises

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

Welcome to Venice. That’ll Be 5 Euros.

Starting this month, tourists intending to visit the city on busy dates will be required to register on a website, and those coming for a single day will have to pay an entry fee.

People take photos and selfies from a bridge overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice.

By Elisabetta Povoledo

Reporting from Italy

On its busiest days, Venice swells with tourists who clog the city’s narrow streets, leave behind piles of garbage and often frustrate locals. So the canal-crossed city is fighting back.

Starting on April 25, and for another 29 days scattered mostly around national holidays and weekends through mid-July, day trippers to the historic part of Venice will have to pay 5 euros, about $5.40, a measure that city officials hope will encourage people to come during less busy times.

All visitors to Venice will also have to register their presence in the city on the specified days, filling out an online form that will help officials gauge how many visitors to expect and strategize about how to handle them.

“It’s not about making money — the costs of the operation are higher than what we’re going to make,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told reporters on Thursday as Venetian officials kicked off a global advertising campaign.

Instead, said Michele Zuin, the city official in charge of budgeting and economics, the aim is “to better manage the numbers of tourists and disincentivize mass tourism, which is what creates, let’s say, the difficulty of living in this city.”

Visitors staying overnight in Venice will not have to pay, nor will those traveling there to work, to visit relatives or to study. Anyone born in the city is also exempt , as are minors under 14. And Mr. Brugnaro said there would be no cap on the number of visitors allowed in.

Rising improbably from the waters of the Venetian lagoon, the city is as delicate as it is beautiful, and in recent decades it has struggled to protect a uniqueness that is threatened by climate change and rising seas, as well as by mass tourism .

To counter that figurative and literal erosion, the city has installed giant gates at four mouths of the lagoon to keep seawater out and pavements dry, and banned cruise ships from the inner canals. Those efforts helped keep Venice off UNESCO’s list of “World Heritage in Danger” even after experts at the agency raised concerns last year that Italy had not done enough to protect the city.

From 1976 until this year, Italy had allocated funds to help safeguard Venice, and on Thursday, Mr. Brugnaro chided the country’s central government for not renewing that funding. He said he had asked the government for €1.5 billion for the next 10 years to help preserve a city with a unique heritage that requires continuous maintenance.

“We need that financing,” he said.

Occasionally, days have been so busy with tourists that the city has had to limit some streets to one-way pedestrian traffic.

Simone Venturini, the city official in charge of tourism, said of the new measures, “We will be the first city in the world to know exactly how many tourists will come to Venice that day — whether exempt or paying, they have to register.”

After registering on the website, visitors will receive a QR code — valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. — that they will be required to show when entering the city at points like the train station, Piazzale Roma, the municipal parking lot, some beachfront locations and St. Mark’s Square. There will also be spot checks throughout the city.

For now, anyone arriving in Venice without a QR code will be allowed to buy it at the last minute, either on a smartphone or at kiosks set up leading up to the access points, officials said.

Transgressors will face fines of €50 to €300 plus a €10 fee, Mr. Zuin said.

The initiative is being introduced on a trial basis so that city officials can see whether the system works and how it can be improved, he said. In the future, the entry fee could be calibrated — “a sliding scale of prices,” Mayor Brugnaro said — depending on the day.

“We’re asking for collaboration,” Mr. Brugnaro said, adding that the data accumulated during the 29 days would be made public. He said that officials from other cities around the world had contacted his administration to find out more about the access system.

So far, more than 50,000 people have registered through the website — about a third of them paying for one-day visits, officials said.

“The entire world wants to come to Venice,” Mr. Venturini said at the introduction of the advertising campaign, which included a video message of the mayor speaking in various languages using A.I.-generated speech translation.

In the video, Mayor Brugnaro apologizes for any inconvenience that the new system might create. But, he said, “the city has to be protected.”

Viking River Cruises

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days

Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.
