Nutbourne Vineyards, West Sussex

Visit Nutbourne Vineyards , stay at Cattlestone Farm, check availability here.

Set in the West Sussex countryside, Nutbourne Vineyards has been in the Gladwin family since 1991. The family also owns a selection of restaurants in London where you'll find wines from the vineyard. Sustainability is at the core of the operation, from following biodiverse practices in the vineyard (hence wildflower meadows in amongst the vines) to efforts to reduce the carbon footprint in distribution and production.

The vineyard trail is open all year round. Pick up an illustrated map and go on a self-guided tour around the different fields to discover the different grapes grown in each area and enjoy the views across the South Downs. The Cellar Door is open to pick up a bottle at the end of your visit. Guided tours and tastings are also available.

What to eat: Nutbourne offers a range of dining experiences at the vineyard throughout the year, from picnics in the summer to burgers & bubbly evenings. For a flying visit, cheese and crackers are available from April to November. Tour the vineyard, then graze on a special cheeseboard (centred around a whole Baron Bigod brie) on the viewing platform while sipping a glass of wine. For a truly memorable experience, time your visit to coincide with the Nutbourne Vineyard supper clubs on Thursday and Saturday evenings throughout summer (from £95). Hosted by the Gladwin family, you’ll enjoy a sparkling reception before enjoying a five course meal out in the vineyard, with each course matched to a different Nutbourne vintage. Produce is locally sourced, and dishes might include South Coast sea bream served with Nutbourne tomatoes, and roasted Sussex beef from Gregory Gladwin. The menu changes each month to make the most of seasonal produce.

What to drink: The 'Nutty Blush' rosé made from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir is a light pale pink hue, with floral notes and gentle berry acidity – ideal for summer sipping. Red wine fans will enjoy the Pinot Noir, with a portion of the wine aged in French oak to add depth. Bottles are all illustrated with Bridget Gladwin's paintings.

What to stay: Nearby Cattlestone Farm has a range of camping and glamping accommodation options to choose from. Pitch a tent in the open field or book a yurt and use the outdoor kitchen, complete with a pizza oven. You might even get to spot the goats, named Gin and Tonic. If you can, book the newly renovated luxury Sunrise shepherd's hut. It's impressively spacious and cosy inside, with a comfy king-size bed. Wake up and open the double doors on to your wrap-around deck, with an outdoor roll-top bath and chairs to enjoy the views over peaceful rolling fields. The full-size en-suite shower room and fully equipped kitchen mean there’s everything you need for a quiet, relaxing break.

Tillingham, East Sussex

From £165 per night including breakfast, check availability here .

A few miles from the medieval port town of Rye in East Sussex, Tillingham is hidden away in 70 acres of hills, vineyards and woodlands, scattered with wandering pigs, cattle, sheep and chickens. It’s a serene, bucolic setting for the cutting-edge winery, hotel and dining destination. A renovated Victorian farmstead and neighbouring hop barn contain 11 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, tasting room and shop, all replete with hip, upcycled furniture and fittings and dreamy views of the surrounding Sussex countryside.

Tillingham offers daily tours and wine tastings (by appointment only), running to around 90 minutes, at £35pp. Start in the tasting room and move through the rest of the estate, from the modern winery, to the ancient oast house hosting Tillingham’s collection of qvevri (earthenware vessels buried in the ground and used to make orange wine) through to the idyllic rolling vineyards. Our tour guide took a deep-dive into Tillingham’s biodynamic, low-intervention approach to wine-making – wine nerds and aficionados will love the level of detail. You’re also given four generous pours of different wines.

What to eat: Come for lunch, dinner or both. Set over two floors filled with vintage and revamped furniture, exposed beams, sheepskins and sprays of dried flowers and foliage, downstairs is a casual wine bar with a small plates menu and an impressive wine and cocktail list (make a beeline for the silky fig leaf martini). Upstairs houses a more formal restaurant, where new head chef Brendan Eades (formerly of Silo and the Conduit Club) has created the four-course Garden Menu that showcases Tillingham’s homegrown produce – think veg from its walled garden, meat raised in its pastures and fish caught in nearby Rye. Dishes are simply cooked and presented, yet pack in the flavour – the quality really sings. Highlights on our visit included delicate Dungeness crab with nasturtium; tender, deeply flavoured Tillingham lamb; and a luscious, perfectly set egg tart. If you’re staying over, breakfast also takes place in the restaurant and features a set menu of sourdough with whey butter and homemade jam, granola and yogurt, local charcuterie and cheese.

What to drink: Natural wine fans will love what’s on offer here. Try the delicate Col 21 with its grassy, citrussy tones, or P21 – highly gluggable, vibrant pink fizz with rhubarb and raspberry notes.

Where to stay: The estate’s old hop barn has been converted into 11 bedrooms, all equipped with midcentury furnishings and earthy jewel colours, heavenly scented diffusers, modern art, Roberts Radios, Haeckels toiletries and welcome snacks of fudge and sherry in crystal glasses. We stayed in the expansive feature double room, which comes with a freestanding tub and huge window with sweeping views of the vines and countryside.

Bolney Wine Estate , West Sussex

From £245 per night, check availability at booking.com , tour tickets at Virgin Experience Days (£133.50 for tour, tasting and lunch for 2 .

Nestled in lushly green surrounds on the edge of the South Downs, the Bolney Estate is a long-time fixture on the English wine scene – founders Janet and Rodney Pratt first bought the land in 1972 for wine-making – raking in numerous plaudits over the past five decades. It makes both still and sparkling wines from five vineyards on the site, and there's also a sleek visitor centre complete with café and shop, with plans afoot to expand these facilities next year. Bolney offers a range of vineyard tours and tastings of varying length. We tried the Sussex cheese and wine tasting, which included a tour of the winery and surrounding vineyard, and an accessible yet in-depth guided tasting of Bolney wines paired with delicious Sussex-made cheeses and charcuterie, all of which you can find in the shop (make a beeline for the superb Brighton Blue).

What to eat: The light and spacious Eighteen Acre Café (if it’s sunny and warm, nab a table on the large balcony for gorgeous panoramic vineyard views) serves up generous sharing plates that make the most of Sussex produce, much of it made just a few miles away – think tender local braised pork belly with Hispi cabbage and Bolney Lychgate red wine jus, or umami wild mushroom ragu with cured egg yolk.

What to drink: We loved the floral and elegant Bolney Bubbly as well as the passion fruit and elderflower-laced Lychgate Bacchus. English still red wines are something of a rarity but Bolney’s silky pinot noir, with delicate cherry notes, is an excellent example and well worth trying. Don’t just stop at wine, Bolney also makes its own gin and rosso vermouth.

Where to stay: Nearby in the picture-postcard village of Cuckfield, Ockenden Manor is a beautifully preserved Elizabethan manor house with rooms ranging from grand oak-panelled suites to spacious rooms with four-poster beds and roll-top baths. What to eat: The menu at the estate’s Leaping Hare restaurant/café/shop, housed in a 14th-century barn, might include the likes of mussels in Wyken Good Dog Ale, or Suffolk venison fillet with roast quince.

What to drink: Wyken Moonshine, a sparkling wine made with pinot noir and auxerrois grapes.

Where to stay: Camomile Cottage, an arty Suffolk longhouse where you’ll breakfast in the garden room on full English or eggs benedict with home-baked bread. Doubles from £89. camomilecottage.co.uk

What to eat: Foodie mecca Ludlow is a short drive away, or try The Harp Inn in the next village of Old Radnor.

What to drink: Choose from Pet Nat (pétillant naturel), a rich-coloured slightly sparkling white; Col Rondo, a fruity red best served lightly chilled; Still Red, lightly oaked with cherries and spice (all £25); or Bubbly Bubbly made in the traditional champagne method (£35). All are unfiltered, fermented with indigenous wild yeast, and vegan.

Where to stay: On-site Highbrook Cottage, a 16th century former worker's cottage, was renovated by the couple into a bucolic idyll, from £100 per night (three-night minimum stay).

What to eat: Head to nearby foodie hub Malton, home to a famous food market, and restaurants, cafes and pubs galore.

What to drink: One of Ryedale’s award-winners, such as a bottle of Yorkshire’s Lass, a delicate dry white.

Where to stay: In one of two cosily outfitted rooms in Ryedale's farmhouse, from £130 a night.

There's a "small-plates restaurant" open during the day, said The Times . One of the big highlights here are the three luxury vineyard lodges "each decorated in beautiful materials, with a terrace for better views of those ripening grapes" as well as a barrel sauna and a hot tub". The estate first started planting in 2007 and "boasts 110 acres of land under vine, where it largely produces Blanc de Blancs, Brut and English Sparkling Rose", said Square Meal .  tinwoodestate.com

Ridgeview Wine Estate, East Sussex

Ridgeview Wine Estate in East Sussex

As well as tours and tastings, Tillingham also offers 11 double rooms in a former hop barn and a restaurant with vistas over the Sussex countryside. And if an afternoon of wine tasting really takes it out of you, a sumptuous collection of lunches and afternoon teas are available in the vineyard café. Its story began in 2006 on a south-facing Devon hillside overlooking the River Axe with owner Rob Corbett planting his vines by hand. Now the vineyard offers private tours and a June festival, held to celebrate the release of the latest vintage. Gwinllan Conwy Vineyard, Conwy

Gwinllan Conwy Vineyard

There are vineyards "blossoming" all across Wales, said Natasha Lovell-Smith on Great British Food Awards . And one of the most popular is Gwinllan Conwy, which has received multiple national and international awards. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Snowdonia Mountain Range, the "success" of this vineyard is "underpinned by the microclimate" of north Wales, which "pairs resemblance" to the climate of New Zealand. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, this means the vineyard "experiences mild winters allowing the vines to develop earlier". This beautiful vineyard offers tours and wine tasting experiences throughout the year and at the online shop you can buy Welsh artisan produce or Welsh hampers, as well as wine. gwinllanconwy.co.uk

Llanerch Vineyard, Glamorgan

Llanerch Vineyard in Pontyclun, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales

Tucked into the Welsh countryside, yet only 20 minutes from Cardiff, Llanerch Vineyard offers "a drop of romance", said Kerry Walker in The Daily Telegraph . While the vineyard itself is centred on a "whitewashed farmhouse" from 1851 and pulls off the "delicate act of combining original features", the hotel rooms are "bright and contemporary". Beyond the hotel and wine, is the "perkily turreted Neo-Gothic" Hensol Castle which is only a 15-minute walk away. But where Llanerch really "shines" is its restaurant which overlooks the vineyard and offers "great" food and "bang-on" service. You may "come for a wine tour" but you'll "stay for the imaginative locally sourced food". llanerch.co.uk

Ryedale Vineyards, North Yorkshire

Ryedale Vineyards in North Yorkshire

The most northerly vineyard in Britain, Ryedale offers more than wine – it also makes cider from the estate's orchards. Voted one of the best vineyards to visit and tour in England, it offers an "informal, humorous and informative guided tour". For those wanting to stay, Ryedale has two "cosy en suite rooms in the farmhouse", said The Guardian , and the "slap-up breakfast" is the "perfect way to start a day" exploring the surrounding North Yorkshire wolds. ryedalevineyards.co.uk

Secret Valley, Somerset.

A gorgeous slice of land on the southern edge of the Quantock hills, Secret Valley is part farm, part vineyard and part glamping site, with tents, huts and deluxe lodges (sleeping up to five). The five acres of vines produced their first crop in 2010, and guests can book tastings of the red, white, rosé and sparkling wines produced on the estate. This is a great choice for families and groups, with farm tours, a play barn and all manner of activities, from canoeing to zorbing, bookable through the Black Rock Outdoors Activity Centre, also found on the farm. Black Chalk Vineyard, Hampshire

Rolling out from the banks of the River Test, Black Chalk , a small-batch producer of award-winning sparkling wine, is an under-the-radar gem. Private tours and tastings combine time in the vineyards with the chance to sample both wines over locally sourced cheeses and charcuterie. Four Wild Escapes Treehouses are dotted in the woodland that also belongs to the vineyard; an outdoor bath is the place to sip a glass or two and watch the sun drift down behind the trees. Sip and Stay: Winery Hotels in the United States

Immerse yourself in wine country at these winery hotels.

It’s one thing to visit wine country, it’s another to immerse yourself in it. Staying on a working vineyard at a winery hotel is the perfect way to do just that.

With every one of the 50 states in the United States producing wine, a visit to a winery hotel can easily be done – even outside of Napa Valley or Sonoma. Albeit, a stay at a winery hotel in these two regions is something not to miss… We’ve uncorked a few wonderful winery hotels throughout the country to sip in, including those in Napa Valley and Sonoma as well as some underrated wine regions – Alaska, Idaho, Colorado, New York, Washington – to help enhance your next wine country experience.

Let us know in the comments if you have other recommendations for a stay at another winery hotel. Cheers!

Bear Creek Winery and Lodging, Homer, Alaska

Wine Country Inn, Palisades, Colorado

We’re ALMOST cheating by listing the Wine Country Inn in Colorado’s wine region, the Palisades. This winery hotel is not owned and operated by a vineyard, but the Victorian style hotel sits in the middle of 21 acres of vines that produce grapes, which are crushed and bottled as the Inn’s signature label wines. And, it is adjacent to two wineries. So, it can still be deemed as a winery hotel…at least according to us.

Hermann Hill Vineyard and Inn, Hermann Missouri

Located on top of a hill overlooking the town of Hermann in Missouri, Hermann Hill Vineyard and Inn offers an exquisite view of not only the quaint little town of Herman, but of the Missouri River and the surrounding vineyards, including those on its own property. Each room at Herman Hill include a full size working hot tub, private patio and a steam shower in the oversized, luxurious bathroom.

The rooms themselves are beautifully decorated, totally updated with new furniture, plush linens and a cute little sitting area for you to watch the sunrise or simply sip some local wine. One of the more personalized things about the Herman Hills Inn I loved during my stay was the 9 o’clock cookie delivery. Every evening the owner personally delivers fresh baked cookies to each room, along with a scoop of ice cream topped with a bit of local Missouri port wine. It’s a delicious way to end the evening. Rathfinny Wine Estate

Tillingham, East Sussex

A farm dating back to the 13th century, Tillingham is surrounded by 70 acres of rolling hills and woodlands with far-reaching views towards Rye and the Romney salt marshes beyond. Ben Walgate’s biodynamic winery is relatively new – the vines he planted gave their first crop in 2020 to produce a variety of wines, including a pinot blanc, pinot noir and chardonnay, as well as a sparkling. Wine tours and tastings run daily and are available by appointment. The lovely accommodation consists of 11 pared-back but stylish rooms in what used to be a hop barn. The wine bar, with its wood-fired pizza oven, is open for lunch, and bar snacks are always available with a glass of wine. For dinner, the chef’s à la carte menu showcases simply cooked ingredients, grown on the farm or sourced from local producers.

Deep in the Cotswolds, this is one of the oldest vineyards in the UK. The first vines were planted in 1973 on half an acre of land to see how they would grow. Today, they stretch across 75 acres. Visitors can enjoy a self-guided walking route or book in for a guided tour and tasting of five still and sparkling wines. For lunch or dinner, the Brasserie serves tapas-inspired dishes to complement the wines. You can spend the night in one of the lodges tucked away further down in the valley – they have floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides with views overlooking tranquil, willow tree-fringed ponds surrounded by vines. Or there are cosy bedrooms next to the restaurant – these have south-facing patios and wonderful views too.

Oxney Organic Estate, East Sussex

Close to Rye, Oxney’s 35 acres of vines produce around 20% of all organic grapes grown in the UK. They are used to make still and sparkling wines in a converted Grade II-listed square oast house. Tours are held on Saturdays from May to September and you’re guaranteed to get an enlightening intro to the English organic wine revolution – a member of the team will take you round the vineyard and the winery, talking you through the perils of growing grapes in a cooler climate and the organic methods they use to overcome them. At the end, you’ll sample four wines. If you want to stay on, you’ve got options: a spacious converted barn, the historic Vineyard House or a cosy shepherd’s hut.

On the Devon-Dorset border in the village of Musbury, the Corbett family have transformed a south-facing hillside on their farm into a thriving vineyard that produces an excellent sparkling wine. Jabajak, Carmarthenshire

Once a droving farm, Jabajak’s seven acres of grounds are in a quiet spot on the edge of west Wales’s Bluestone mountains. They produced their first harvest in 2014 and there are now daily tastings of the white and sparkling rosé, along with self-guided tours of the vineyard. Converted from the drovers’ old stone buildings, the restaurant serves dishes using ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden and local producers. Book the Nook and enjoy a private table for two on a balcony in the eaves. There are eight en-suite rooms, all different in style – we love the Grainstore Suite, a truly romantic hideaway in the eaves.

7 Dreamy Vineyards with Accommodation in Tuscany

Sean Finelli Last Updated: February 7, 2023

Want to have a true Tuscan experience? Then, you’ll want to eat, sleep, and drink wine in a vineyard in the rolling hills of Tuscany. The only question is, where should you stay? Whether you want to taste the best wine or be close to Florence, there’s a place for you. I’ve put together a list of the dreamiest vineyards with accommodation in Tuscany.

Pro Tip: Planning to visit the wine regions of Tuscany? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you need it. Check out our guide to Tuscany for more planning resources, our best Florence and Tuscany tours for a memorable trip, and how to plan a day of wine tasting in Tuscany .

Top Vineyards in Tuscany With Places To Stay

Time spent in the Tuscan countryside and in the vineyards, in particular, is the most relaxing time you can have. The hills roll on endlessly like green waves—except these waves produce arguably the greatest wine on Earth!

If you’re looking for that perfect place to enjoy a few days of living like a Tuscan wine estate owner, this list is for you. Every recommendation on this list is in the countryside. Some might say “Montalcino,” but we’re referring to the surrounding region of Brunello-producing territory, not the city.

There are a few agriturismi that happen to be nestled between vineyards. They’ll give you the feeling of staying on a vineyard but the vast majority are guest houses or hotels on the property. I highly recommend renting a car if you plan to stay at these locations. It’ll make your experience easier and much more memorable.

For anyone interested in exploring Tuscan vineyards and wine, check out our Tuscany wine tours and day trips . They come with a range of options from riding the Tuscan countryside on a Vespa to eating traditional dinners and exploring historic countryside towns.

Capanna Suites

Capanna Luxury Suites Montalcino

€€€ | Montalcino Countryside | Great Views | Luxury | Pool | Restaurant

Capanna is a larger producer of wines in Montalcino that has done very well in the past few decades. With open minds and ambitious goals, they built one of Montalcino’s most luxurious places to rest your head.

It features an epic pool, restaurants, an outdoor deck overlooking wine country, and of course endless reserves of their wine. The price tag is high enough, but every now and then you have to treat yourself!

Location, photos, and booking

Fonte de’ Medici at Tignanello

vineyard tours and stays

€€ | Tignanello/Chianti Classico | Pool | Restaurant | Spa | Cooking Classes

If you’re into Italian wines, you may have heard of Tignanello. It’s what is referred to as a Super-Tuscan wine produced by a single vineyard, Villa Antinori, on a single estate, Tenuta Tignanello. Why is it so important? You’ll have to taste it to find out.

Just on the edge of the estate is a privately-owned property known as Fonte de’ Medici, which is a sort of borgo. A borgo was a small town in Tuscany where everyone working the same land basically lived together.

This hotel is built from a borgo, which is not uncommon for the area. The rooms are set in restored houses around the borgo. It has a beautiful town square, chapel, and other more hotel-like amenities like a swimming pool and tennis courts. You’ll have to rent a car to here, but it’s worth it for lovers of Tignanello or wine country in general. They also have very fun cooking classes!

Il Borgo by Castello Banfi

Il Borgo by Castello Banfi Montalcino

€€€€ | Montalcino Countryside | 5 Star | Brunello Wine | Michelin Dining | Epic Pool

Castello Banfi is an institution of winemaking. They are by far the largest producer of Brunello wines on the planet as they own the most territory. Their grounds are absolutely immaculate and their structure is beautiful.

A famous line of cypress trees lines their kilometer-or-so-long driveway up to their estate. It’s one of the most elegant estates I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting in all my travels.

They even have a luxury cluster of mini-apartments on-site and a Michelin-star restaurant. The pool overlooks seemingly endless rolling hills completely covered in vineyards and olive trees. You’ll pay tooth and nail for your night’s stay, but it’s arguably one of the nicest hotels on Earth.

Borgo Casa al Vento

pool at sunset at borgo casa al vento tuscany

€€ | Chianti | 90 mins From Florence | Great Views | Lots of Activities | Restaurant

Borgo Casa al Vento is more of a retreat than a place to stay. When you go there, you’ll likely stay on the estate the entire time. They have lots to do including archery, tennis, a pool, and more. This is a place of indulgence—quite literally, you can have a wine bath!

The structure is a renovated borgo with a very European feeling. It’s a great place to spend a few days, especially for families. Your kids can run around while you enjoy the scenery. The rooms are very charming and rustic. Many have fireplaces and there are common areas to build fires and enjoy a Tuscan evening.

The on-site restaurant is dedicated to the “rediscovery of taste,” so you can expect delicious Chianti cuisine made with local ingredients including their Sangiovese wine.

Le Chiuse Montalcino

€ | Montalcino Countryside | Winery With Long History | Rustic Apartments | Pool

Le Chiuse is one of my favorite vineyards in all of Montalcino. The estate is quaint and rustic. You can rent an apartment for around €100 per night and pay in cash upon arrival. The apartments mostly have two bedrooms, but you can see the details on their website.

If you want to warm up by the fire in a rustic apartment with scenic views on a secluded estate this location is perfect. You will need a rental car to get here. It’s great for serious wine connoisseurs and minimalists who want to dedicate as much of their budget towards wine purchases as possible. The tasting room is one to be reckoned with and the structure is family run.

FLORENCE Top 17 Things to Do…Vespa ride, Pisa and more!

Villa Medicea di Lilliano

Medici Villa di Lilliano Tuscany Accommodation

€€ | Tuscany | 25 mins From Florence | Incredible Estate | Cooking Classes

Set in the Chianti countryside just outside Florence, this property is incredibly cool to visit and a treat for all. It’s the perfect place to stay if you want to visit Florence for an afternoon or two but stay in the countryside. It’s close enough to Florence to reach by taxi, making it an excellent choice for anyone who wants the Tuscany countryside vibe without renting a car.

The accommodation will feel like a luxurious home away from home with elegant homey touches throughout. As a favorite destination wedding venue, you know this place is stunning. They also have fun cooking classes! For wine lovers, this wine estate and the family who run it have a long history. This is the place to enjoy a bit of the Tuscan lifestyle.

Casanova di Neri Relias Hotel

vineyard tours and stays

€€€ | Montalcino Countryside | Top Wine Producer | Pool | Spa

Casanova di Neri is one of Montalcino’s premier wine producers and one of my personal favorites. If there’s an epic year for Montalcino, this producer will normally receive some “best of the best” awards from the main wine critics. Producing great wine is a science and an art at the same time and their vineyard reflects that.

The property sits in the valley below the city of Montalcino and is perfectly curated in all its beauty. They have multiple large structures including a castle-like hotel, an enoteca for wine tastings, and all the equipment needed to make great wine.

The rooms are minimally decorated and elegant. There’s a pool on-site with views to die for and plenty of space to relax. You will need a car to get here, but that’s part of why it’s a dreamy vineyard.

Make a day — or a weekend — of touring and tasting your way through some of Pennsylvania’s and New Jersey’s most idyllic vineyards

There’s something to be said about drinking wine in the place where it grows. And given the quality of wines that Pennsylvania and New Jersey are producing, drinking locally means drinking well. From more casual, family-friendly environments to intimate one-on-one tastings with the winemakers themselves, local wineries not far afield from Philadelphia have a lot to offer. They’re all a little over an hour drive outside the city — and totally worth the trip.

Wayvine Winery & Vineyard 4374 Forge Road Nottingham, PA

Wayvine is not just a winery — it’s a lifestyle for the Wilson family, owners of this third-generation picturesque Nottingham farm. Zachary and James Wilson are the winemakers and vineyard managers who oversee the 18 different grape varieties grown on-site. Put plainly: Wayvine’s wine is fantastic. Selections are mainly dry red and white single varieties, but the Matriarch and the Chief are curious delicious standouts. The Matriarch is a blend of riesling, gruner veltliner, pinot grigio, and sauvignon blanc; the Chief is made from carmine, merlot, and cab franc. Carmine is a cross of cabernet sauvignon and carignan, which was considered a “mystery grape” when it appeared among a crop of Wayvine’s chardonnay. Shaded seating is available on the lawn or under a tasteful covered tent decorated with white lights and used barrels. Live music and local food trucks rotate weekly and smiling pups Chlöe, Maze, and Ember frolic and play among happy guests seated next to acres of vines. The winery also offers homemade cocktails and local beer, as well as yoga, art, and other events.

Chaddsford Winery 632 Baltimore Pike Chadds Ford, PA

Chaddsford Winery offers sparkling, sweet, and dry wine made from common European grapes like pinot grigio and cabernet sauvignon, as well as wine from French-American hybrids such as chambourcin, noiret, and the lovely and floral vignoles. The winery sits on five beautiful acres and offers a casual, fun ambiance and easy-drinking well-made wine from winemaker Gabriel Rubilar (although serious reserve styles are also available). The winery is open seven days a week and features a lawn for blankets and a shaded picnic area. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended for weekend table service and required for some of the more involved educational experiences such as the hour-long Barrel Room tasting. Winery tours start in the fall, led by the extremely knowledgeable head wine educator and winery manager, Rachel Rhan.

Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery 700 Folly Hill Road Kennett Square , PA

Nestled among the gentle, sloping hills of Kennett Square, Galer is a boutique winery whose approach marries nature, science, and art. Winemaker Virginia Mitchell offers sparkling, white, rosé, and red wines from her Icon, Reserve, and Huntress series, and Red Lion Chardonnay as her single vineyard designate. Gruner veltliner and albarino appear as special surprises among more expected choices like chardonnay, pinot noir, and cabernet franc. Galer’s wines are fruit-driven, dry, and elegant. Mitchell’s talent is particularly showcased by her sparkling chardonnay. Sit out back for sweeping views of the well-manicured vineyards and listen to the wind that sounds like waterfalls as it blows through the surrounding tall trees, or head inside for the tastefully done bar that opens onto an outdoor patio. Light snacks are available, and seating is first come, first served.

Karamoor Estate Vineyard and Winery 40 E. Skippack Pike Fort Washington, PA

The Karamoor experience begins with a long, tree-framed driveway that eventually runs through open fields dotted with barns before finally reaching acres of vineyards. If the entrance promises sophistication, the wine delivers. Winemaker Kevin Robinson creates high-quality international styles primarily from French varieties. Grapes are grown completely on premises at the 250-acre Fort Washington estate. Tickets are by appointment only and include a tour through the vineyards and barrel room and a brief the history of the Karabots family and the Karamoor property. The tour culminates with a tasting in the well-appointed main tasting room, and outdoor seating is available.

Sharrott Winery 370 S. Egg Harbor Road Hammonton, NJ

Sharrott Winery is a family-owned vineyard, winery, and wine bar located in Hammonton, New Jersey. Sharrott boasts a majestic outdoor setting and a beautiful indoor area with a spacious, airy bar with vineyard views. The friendly and knowledgeable staff is happy to guide you through a tasting menu that spans from light and easy dry reds and whites made of international and hybrid grapes to heavier, bolder reserve styles, as well as sweet fruity wines like Sharrott’s Just Peachy sangria. New Jersey is the Garden State, after all. The bar features a full food menu, and the winery is open seven days a week.

vineyard tours and stays

Penns Woods Winery 124 Beaver Valley Road Chadds Ford, PA

Winemakers Gino Razzi and Davide Creato can accommodate just about every palate by offering a variety of sweet, dry, sparkling, red, white, and rosé at Penns Woods Winery. Wines made from international and hybrid grapes are offered, and selections run the gamut from the playful and fun moscato rosé to the high-end aged Library Series Reserve cabernet franc, available only to members of its wine club. Penns Woods wine is made from 100 percent Pennsylvania fruit predominantly grown on-site at the 35-acre facility. Tastings for smaller groups and couples take place on the covered outdoor deck, while there’s plenty of tented outdoor space for larger groups who want to buy by the glass or the bottle on the lawn, where local beer and cider is also available. Penns Woods is open seven days a week and has a full calendar of events and classes. Bonus: A dollar from the sale of each bottle is donated to viticulture and enological research in the state of Pennsylvania to grow and support the wine community.

Grace Winery 50 Sweetwater Road Glen Mills, PA

Come to Grace Winery if you’re ready to feel as if you’ve taken a step back in time — indeed, the property traces itself to the 1680s. Its long and interesting history includes a role in the Underground Railroad and centuries later, it’s now a fully remodeled barn and tasting room that sits across from a grand manor called the Inn at the gorgeous 35-acre estate. Winemaker Andrew Yingst’s list features mostly traditional wines like chardonnay, pinot grigio, and cabernets franc and sauvignon, all of which are polished and well done. The Dragonfly Red Blend comprising syrah and cab sauv is notable for its bright and lovely expression. Grace offers a light menu by chef Dan Wood that is sure to please, as well as beer and spiked seltzer. vineyard tours and stays

Vox Vineti 49 Sproul Road Christiana, PA

The excellently named Vox Vineti is Latin for “voice of the vineyard,” which winegrower and owner Ed Lazzerini wants to speak for the winery’s rocky site in Andrew’s Bridge, Pennsylvania. Vox Vineti’s short list of five single-vineyard wines made of Bordeaux varieties and nebbiolo are complex, earthy, and mineral-driven. The wines are made with the intention to reflect a sense of place rather than winemaking techniques, so cellar intervention is minimal. Vox’s wines pair well with food, and you won’t find any sweet styles. Production is extremely small, with between one and four barrels per label produced. Hour-long tasting appointments are intimate affairs on Saturdays and Sundays and are hosted by Lazzerini himself.

Va La Vineyards 8820 Gap Newport Pike Avondale, PA

Va La specializes in small production field blends made predominantly from Northern Italian and French varieties. Farmer/winemaker Anthony Vietri is a fascinating man making fascinating wine. Vietri has a philosophy of only working with what the vineyard gives, meaning that his blends change by vintage, depending on the integrity of the fruit and the willingness of the land. Va La’s current list contains an amber-hued skin-contact wine and four reds, each of which exhibits purity, distinction, and intensity. Vietri’s use of oak (Pennsylvania oak included) proves that restraint is talent, as it enhances and lifts up — rather than outshines — the grapes. Relax in Va La’s main indoor tasting room or on the back deck overlooking its small well-tended vineyard. Along with the wine, enjoy local artisan cheese and house specialties while chatting with the charming and wonderful Miss Jane behind the bar and tending tables, whose own love comes through with her sweet attention to detail and conversation about all things wine and life.

vineyard tours and stays

White Horse Winery 106 Hall Street Hammonton, NJ

Pull into White Horse Winery under the wooden cut-out of a bright white horse and you’ll likely first encounter Macie, the black lab who serves as the winery’s official mascot. White Horse’s breezy and spacious tasting room showcases a rectangular wraparound bar and an outdoor patio that overlooks the vineyard and lawn dotted with covered picnic tables. Owners Brock Vinton and Brock J. Vinton II’s goals are to shine a light on New Jersey as a serious wine-making region — to that end, winemaker Seferino Cotzojay offers French varieties alongside hybrids such as Cayuga primarily in dry reds, whites, and rosé, although the list has some sweeter wines too. The dry rosé and chambourcin show Cotzojay’s deft skills. The winery also offers small plates and a full events calendar that contains food trucks and live music.

Cortijo LA Organic

Request a tour in spain, travel logistics & private transport options, canary islands, best wineries and vineyard resorts in spain.

One of our most requested topics to cover in Spain is “what are the best wineries to visit and vineyard resorts to stay on?”

There are dozens of options across the country, so which wineries, vineyard resorts, or boutique winery villa(s) you choose will largely depend on where you want to spend the majority of your time in the country. Below, you can find some of our favorites, why guests like them, and also the locations within which they reside.

Note that not every wine region in Spain has a luxury vineyard resort (some have bed and breakfasts, farmhouse accommodation, etc). This list is specific to upscale wineries and vineyard resorts.

If you’re considering visiting wine regions like the Canary Islands or Jerez de la Frontera , we do often recommend you choose a luxury hotel within a city or by the coast, and then drive or use a tour to visit vineyards during your trip.

Note that this is not an exhaustive list, and we’re frequently adding more top wineries in Spain based on both staff visits and reader feedback. This should help you decide which wineries you’d like to visit, and then plan the rest of your trip around that. See our top tips for planning the perfect wine vacation here.

How To Plan Your Trip To Spain

When planning a trip to any country, wine region, or even city, a variety of logistical items must be taken into account. At the end of the day, it all boils down to your personal travel preferences. That being said, here are a few things to take into consideration when planning your trip to Spain.

Consider your all-inclusive budget for your trip to Spain. This will largely determine the length of time and quality of accommodation you’ll be able to enjoy.

Accommodation

A critical and very personal travel preference. Here at Winetraveler, we tend to opt for vineyard resorts and more opulent settings. But you don’t need to spend a lot of money to visit Spain. Plenty of boutique, affordable and beautiful accommodation is available throughout the country, especially in some of the smaller villages.

Where you choose to stay can make or break a vacation, so it’s not only important to decide on the quality of hotel experience you want, but also the location and duration of time you choose to spend. Our recommendation? Don’t try to cram too much into one trip. Choose 2 (maximum 3) destinations you’d like to visit in Spain, and post up at your hotels for a few days in each. If 2 or 3 destinations aren’t enough for you, simply plan to drive or book day trips to additional cities and towns.

You can browse a wide range of prices at vineyard hotels and resorts in Spain here, depending on what wine region(s) you’re intent on visiting.

Transportation

Renting a car is hands-down the best option for exploring Spain. Just remember to pace yourself (and not drink too much if visiting wineries). Search for some of the current best rental car rates here , and be sure to schedule well ahead of time. Spain is incredibly easy to navigate using public transportation as well, both within cities and throughout the countryside.

Alsa operates a number of routes by bus throughout the country.

Renfe provides high-speed train transport across Spain.

In-city, Uber, Taxis and Electric Scooters are widely available to get around in major metropolitan areas like Madrid and Barcelona .

In essence, this is where you ask yourself “what kind of traveler am I?” Are you looking for a relaxed, low-key, food-focused trip? Is this a romantic getaway for you and your significant other? Are there kids in tow and you need a family-friendly vacation ? Are you looking for a fast-paced, active trip? Would you prefer to utilize one hotel as a home base, rent a car and explore from there? There is no right or wrong answer, but it does involve some deep thinking about what you’d like to get out of your trip.

In our experience, a slower-paced vacation through Spain is more ideal. It’s classically more European. Especially in the countryside, where the locals live at a more relaxed pace. Even in the city, Spaniards take their time to enjoy food and wine, take in the ambiance and enjoy the moment.

Assuming you have the time to escape, consider a vacation that lasts 2 to 3 weeks, especially if you’re traveling from the United States. Anytime we’re spending more than 8 hours on a plane, not having to rush through a vacation is preferred. Of course, if your time is limited, you can simply pick and choose from a couple of suggestions in this guide.

There are a few “premier” wine regions you must visit if you haven’t already in Spain. Two of our favorites, and which ironically also happen to have the highest-quality terroir in the country, according to the Spanish regulatory body that governs wine designations, are a must. Those are Rioja and Priorat .

To access Rioja, you have a variety of options. If you’re traveling internationally, direct flights are available into Madrid (MAD) and Barcelona (BCN) airports. Once in country, short-haul flights can be taken to Bilbao (BIO), which is the closest airport to the Rioja wine region. Search and get notified when flight deals arise to any of these airports right here.

If time is on your side, we highly recommend renting a car and driving to Rioja no matter which airport you arrive to in Spain. It’s truly a magical country to explore at a leisurely pace. Driving from Madrid will take you roughly 3 and a half hours without stopping, and about 4 and a half hours from Barcelona. From Bilbao, the ride is 1 and a half hours. Buses and trains are also bookable to Logroño (Rioja’s capital).

Lastly, another great option is to take a day trip to Rioja from San Sebastian. Private round-trip transportation and personalized guided experiences are offered by Baskme, one of the best in the business.

If you’re looking to access the Priorat wine region, your best bet is to travel to Barcelona and either drive yourself , or hire a tour company to provide round-trip transport from the city. Spanish Trails is the most highly-rated day trip operator to get you to and from Priorat. Alternatively, both Wino Tours and Castlexperience Wine Tours offer round trip, 5-star rated privately guided transport to and from Barcelona. If you choose this option, definitely spend a few additional days get to know the food and wine scene in Barcelona .

Of course, there are many more wine regions to explore in Spain. These are just two of our must-visit favorites. We’ll talk a bit more about additional Spanish wine regions in the section below.

Spanish Wine Regions

Wine has been produced in Spain for thousands of years. Whether by native Spaniards, the Moors (who weren’t permitted to drink wine but did still produce it for trade), or Ancient Romans, traditions and winemaking techniques have evolved and been improvised on in almost every kind of terroir throughout the country.

Here, we’ll list several of the most noteworthy wine regions worth exploring in Spain. Hover over or click an image below to see what each region is best known for.

Best Known For: Luxury Vineyard Resorts, Exceptional Wine, Architecture, Boutique Wineries, History, Nightlife

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Spain or an experienced Winetraveler, Rioja is a must-visit to sample some of the finest wine in the country. It’s also a great region to explore for scenic beauty, hikes and unique wine tour experiences. If you want to experience nightlife like a Spanish local, the town of Logroño has two streets, Calle Laurel and Calle San Juan, that come alive in the evening with some of the finest (and affordable) local wine and tapas.

Best Known For: Remote & Stunning Scenery, Boutique Wineries, Intense Red Wines, Hiking, Climbing

A favorite wine region amongst our team here at Winetraveler, Priorat is one of the highest-quality wine-producing regions in Spain. This is a great region to explore if you’d like to remove yourself from crowds, explore peaceful Spanish villages, ancient ruins and taste wine on vineyard settings.

Ribera del Duero

Best Known For: Beautifully crafted Tempranillo Wines, Historic Castles & Monuments, Peaceful Countryside, Cuisine & Dramatic Views.

The most famous and noteworthy wineries within Ribera del Duero are typically found near the towns of Valladolid and Burgos.

Best Known For: Fewer Crowds, Monastrell, Historic, Countryside Experience

Jumilla, part of the Murcia area of Spain, is one of the smallest wine producing regions in the country. It’s best known for its Monastrell (also known as Mourvedre) production. If you plan a trip to this region, the best wineries to visit are located near the small village of Carche.

Best Known For: Sherry, Andalucian Culture, History, Equestrianism

This ancient and beautiful area in located in Spain’s southern Andalucia region is best known for its Sherry production. This is a fortified wine that has been produced as far back as the time of the Phoenicians. These wines are white, and made primarily from the Palomino grape with a variety of aging techniques, are grown in arid vineyards forming a triangle with the inland point of Jerez de la Frontera.

Rías Baixas

Best Known For: Albariño, Seafood, Coastal Views, Nautical Vibes

Rías Baixas is a special wine region located in the northwestern portion of Spain, by the sea. It’s here that winemakers craft vibrant white wines that pair perfectly with seafood, primarily from the Albariño grape variety.

Best Known For: Spanish Cava (Sparkling Wine), Location, Scenery

Located about an hour South of Barcelona, the Penedès wine region is a sparkling wine-producing wine region that resides within the broader Catalonian region. It’s one of our favorites to visit. Not just for the wineries, but also for its humble villages, beautiful mountain scenery and hiking opportunities.

Best Known For: Off-The-Beaten-Path, Red (Tempranillo) Wines, Unique Experiences

This lesser-known wine-producing region resides within Castilla y León in northwestern Spain. It’s actually fairly close to the Portuguese border (for those who might want to craft a multi-country wine trip). While not as famous as other Spanish regions, a visit to Toro offers an opportunity to see the western side of Spain, and the wineries are mostly boutique, family-run operations.

Best Known For: Dry White Wines (Verdejo), Location, Scenery

White wine lovers will appreciate Rueda, as it’s famous for its dry and quite aromatic white wines produced from Verdejo. It also makes for a great road trip through the central portion of Spain, as you can drive from Madrid in just under 2 hours, and then shoot across to the nearby red wine region of Ribera del Duero.

Best Known For: Location, Great Wines, Scenery, Day Trips

Did you know that Madrid has its own designated wine region? There are many wineries and vineyards just outside of the city of Madrid, and in fact, the “Vinos de Madrid” region encompasses 3 smaller sub-regions that are officially demarcated. If you’re looking to spend some time in Madrid, a great day trip option is to explore some of the wineries in the countryside. Most wines are produced with either Garnacha or Tempranillo, but are a variety of other grapes are permitted as well. We recommend a couple wineries with visiting in this guide.

Best Known For: History, Culture, Cuisine, Scenery, Wine

Arguably one of our favorite (yet vast) areas of Spain is Andalucia. The region in its entirety includes some of Spain’s most noteworthy destinations, including Seville, Malaga, Cadiz, Cordoba, Ronda and Jerez. We highly recommend simply spending an entire vacation in this region just to get to know it. There is simply so much to do both inland and on the Southern coast. Day trips from Sevilla to ancient villages like Ronda are highly recommended, stopping at various boutique wineries along the way.

Best Known For: Beach Vibes, Scenery, Volcanic Wine, Outdoors

Only recently gaining recognition as a wine region, the Canary Islands (which are actually located off the west coast of Morocco), provide a unique and beautiful destination for wine tourists. Islands including Lanzarote and Tenerife are becoming more well known for their wine production. It’s also incredibly affordable to taste at many wineries. When you’re done sampling wine, take a boat cruise, go surfing or simply relax at any number of beach lagoons across the island chain.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wineries in Spain

What are the best wineries to visit in spain.

Some of the best wineries to visit in Spain include Marqués de Riscal and Bodegas R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia in La Rioja, Bodegas Muga in Haro, Bodegas Emilio Moro and Bodegas Vega Sicilia in Ribera del Duero, Codorníu and Bodegas Torres in Penedès, Alvaro Palacios in Priorat, Bodega Martín Códax in Rías Baixas, Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana in Jerez, and Bodegas Nekeas in Navarra. These wineries offer exceptional wine, beautiful scenery, and unique experiences for visitors, showcasing the diversity and quality of Spanish wines across various regions. At the end of the day, the best wineries to visit in Spain depend on your personal travel preferences and what you’re looking to get out of the experience. Take a look at our travel guide for Spanish wineries to see why each winery stands out to our readers.

Where are most of the wineries in Spain?

Most of the wineries in Spain are primarily located in the regions of La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Penedès , and Priorat . Additionally, there are notable wineries in other regions such as Rías Baixas, Rueda, Toro, Navarra , and Jerez , contributing to the country’s diverse wine production.

When is the best time to visit Spanish wineries?

The best time to visit Spanish wineries is generally during the fall, specifically from September to November, as it coincides with the grape harvest season. This period offers a unique opportunity to witness the winemaking process and enjoy the vibrant colors of the vineyards. However, other seasons also have their merits: spring (March to May) brings mild temperatures and blossoming vineyards, summer (June to August) provides warm weather and numerous wine festivals, and winter (December to February) offers a more intimate and quieter experience, with fewer tourists and the chance to taste aged wines. Each season caters to different preferences and experiences for wine travelers.

How can I plan a wine tour in Spain?

The best way to plan a wine tour in any of Spain’s remarkable wine regions is to schedule a half-day or full-day private tour with a local guide based in the wine region you’re interested in exploring. At Winetraveler, we suggest several wine tours in Spain that our readers have personally embarked on and had wonderful and immersive experiences. The best part about hiring a private guide and driver for a tour is that you don’t have to worry about logistics, planning or driving, and you can rely on local knowledge to taste the best wines and have unique experiences you might otherwise not have known about. Take a look at our recommended wine tours in Spain right here.

We had the most memorable experience visiting 7 different wineries in Spain during harvest thanks to Winetraveler’s tips for exploring Rioja. Emily, one of our travel advisors, helped ensure we had the best tour guides showing us around while we were in the country. We can’t wait to go back. Next time, we’re planning on exploring Andalucia.
