DC History  Conference 

Off the Mall guide Katie Kirkpatrick 

 will be a co-presenter on Saturday the 6th at 3:30pm, for a panel on "Buried Histories of Slavery and the Civil War," where she will be expanding on the research done on sex work during the Civil War, which of course resulted in the Madams of DC tour. So this is some additional information to what someone would hear on the tour, in a panel setting. Register below!

French Connections  Georgetown

The last weekend of April always means the Georgetown French Market, and the return of the French Connections Tour - Georgetown Edition. This tour explores the many ways in which the French have influenced Georgetown throughout its history, from the food scene, to diplomacy, and the visit of America's most famous Frenchman, Marquis de Lafayette.

The Jazz Era in DC Duke Ellington Birthday Tour

Due to the DC History Conference timing, the usual day and time for the Ellington to Langston: the Jazz Era in DC had to be rescheduled. However, it is fortuitous, because in 2024 we celebrate 125 years since the Edward "Duke" Ellington came into this world. His birthday is April 29th, and so I'll be offering the tour on Sunday, April 28th, at 1pm.

NEW TOUr Debuting 2024 "The Mall Beyond the Museums" 

The National Mall is known for museums, monuments, and memory on a national scale. However, the "People's Park," as it is sometimes known, contains a history that goes well beyond these massive edifices. Explore a different side of the National Mall while still seeing the major sites, such as Capitol Hill, the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Castle, and more. 

Starting March 2024, tour is every Saturday at 10am

Washington experienced an unprecedented rise in prostitution during and after the Civil War. During this period, Pennsylvania Avenue became DC's most notorious red light district, from the ramshackle "boarding houses" of Murder Bay to the glamorous pleasure houses of Marble Alley, all within sight of the Capitol. Also, a new profession for women was rising, that of the "female lobbyist." This tour will introduce you to some of the most notorious women of mid-19th Century DC.

Route starts at the Willard Intercontinental and travels down Pennsylvania Avenue, which was the main thoroughfare along which DC's red light district arose. There is a half-way stop at Hill Country BBQ for a bathroom break and refreshments. Tour ends at the National Museum of the American Indian. Tour runs approximately 2.5 hours. Tour runs  1st and 3rd  Friday of the Month at  7pm.

Women of Cold  War Washington

An ill-fated artist, an Ambassador's wife, a Baroness, and the most powerful woman in journalism.....What do they all have in common? They were part of the most exclusive club of power-players in Cold War DC. These amazing women made their mark in a man's world using every tool at their disposal.

Tour runs approximately 2 - 2.5 hours and begins at Thomas Sweet Shop at 3214 P Street NW DC, and ends at Oak Hill Cemetery at 3001 R Street NW.   1st Sunday of the Month at  2pm.

Ellington to Langston - the Jazz Era iN DC

Come on  a winding journey through an era in which the U Street neighborhood of Washington, DC was giving rise to a vibrant jazz scene and establishing the roots of a new movement in black intellectualism. Al so known as "Black Broadway", the U Street corridor was where the big names in jazz came to play at one of the dozens of clubs and theaters, and hobnob with writers and thinkers such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alain Locke.

Tour begins at the historic Howard Theater at 620 T Street NW and ends at the corner of 14th and U Street NW. The tour also makes a halfway stop at the famous Ben's Chili Bowl for a bathroom break and optional refreshment. Tour runs the first Saturday of the month at 3pm. 

History of Black GeorgetowN

Before it was a part of Washington, DC, Georgetown was an independent, bustling port city that boasted thriving trades in many goods, including slaves. At one point African Americans counted for as much as 30% of the Georgetown population. Descendants of enslaved peoples and free black folk have lived in Georgetown for generations, but their contributions to its history do not often receive recognition. This tour will reveal the stories of the black citizens who made their mark on one of DC’s oldest neighborhoods.

The tour starts at 3206 O Street NW DC and ends at the Mt. Zion/Female Union Band Cemetery at 2501 Mill Rd. NW. There is a half-way stop at Thomas Sweet Shop for a bathroom break and refreshment.  Third Saturday of the Month at 2pm. 

Historic AlleywaYS 

The alleyways of DC served a distinct purpose as a city planning feature, but they also provided a hidden safe space where escaped enslaved people and the economically disadvantaged could find inexpensive housing and live their lives away from prying eyes. While city officials condemned life in the alleyways as dangerous, dirty and diseased, they were in fact a place where communities sustained each other and provided security. This walking tour takes you through the Blagden Alley/Naylor Court Historic District, and reveals their secrets. 

Tour starts at 909 M Street NW DC and ends in Blagden Alley. Guests will have a half-way stop at the La Colombe Coffee for a bathroom break and optional refreshments. Tour runs approximately 1.5 hours.    1st Sunday of the Month at 2pm .

 District  of

In the 1980s, the Reagan Administration was reinstating the Selective Service, hippies were turning in yuppies, and the punk scene rose as a reaction to what they saw as a conformist, soulless government. While punk is often associated with London, New York, and LA, there was a substantial scene in DC that had anchors in downtown and elsewhere. The original 9:30 Club and other spaces were the venues where bands like Minor Threat and Bad Brains got started before going on to world renown. On this tour you'll discover what made the DC punk culture distinct from others, the major contributors to the scene, and its lasting impact on the local music scene today.

Tour begins outside of the F and 7th Street Exit of Gallery Place Metro Station (red, green and yellow lines) and ends at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G Street NW DC. 4th  Saturday of the Month at 2pm.

Queer Black Broadway

The U Street Corridor was known as "Black Broadway" in its heyday of the early 20th Century, and was also the center for social justice and fringe movements that fought to bring more opportunity for marginalized groups, including an active Queer community that was associated with the Harlem Renaissance, the Pansy Craze, underground crime worlds, and the wide world of entertainment. This 1.5 hour walking tour begins at 2204 14th Street and ends at Shaw Tavern. 

Echoes of Navy Yard

The Navy Yard is DC’s oldest neighborhood, and was also one of the largest sources of employment for the city's citizens, the entry point into the capital, a destination of DC’s first mass transit system, and much more. This  2-hour walking tour will show you the hidden historic side of this amazing and rapidly changing neighborhood. Tour begins at the New Jersey exit of the Navy Yard - Ballpark metro station (green line), and ends at the Capital Waterfront. 

Lesser Known Notables of Oak Hill Cemetery

The Oak Hill Cemetery in the Georgetown neighborhooddates back to 1848, and contains the graves of many notable but lesser-known men and women. From confederate spies to union generals, educators to architects, Civil War to Cold War, this tour will take you around this beautiful cemetery and recount wild tales of those who use it as their final resting place. And yes, there is at least one ghost story. *Cemetery hours are only 9am - 4pm, so this tour is limited to those times only. 

 History ofJewish Washington

OTM's partner guide Ami Greener leads this tour about notable Jewish contributions to DC history!  It will also answer such questions as: Who was the first US president to visit a DC synagogue while in office, and why did he donate $10? Why did the first synagogue built in DC have wheels? Which historic synagogue was saved at the last minute from turning into a nightclub? And who were the first Jews to live in this new city on the Potomac? You'll get the answer to these questions and more on that fascinating and insightful tour.  ​​​

 French   Connections

France and Washington, DC have a very special connection, and this tour will show you the many ways in which our Gallic friends have influenced the nation's capital.  This 1.5 walk takes you around Lafayette Square and the surrounding neighborhood covering such topics as the Revolutionary War hero General Marquis de Lafayette, the city's heavily French-influenced architecture, African American DC residents who lived in France to escape segregation in America in the early 20th century, and the original planner of Washington, Pierre L'Enfant.   Tour begins at Lafayette Square's SE Corner (Lafayette's Statue) and ends at the Willard Intercontinental.

Katie Kirkpatrick is the founder of Off the Mall Tours. She is proud to call herself a DC resident since 2002. She moved to the capital after college for graduate school, and then worked in government for many years. However, history was always her first love.  She started her touring career by giving historical ghost tour pub crawls, and discovered a passion for sharing the varied and layered history of the capital area. Foggy Bottom Historic District Walking Tours  

The Foggy Bottom Association History Project offers three self-guided on-line walking tours of the Historic District - a complete History/Architecture tour, a neighborhood Art and Artists tour and a family-oriented history hunt designed for families with young children. The tours are updated as we learn new information about the neighborhood. The History and Arts tours can be walked or enjoyed from the comfort of home. On the family tour, you'll want to take your kids through the neighborhood and help them identify locations.  All you need is a pen or pencil to complete the worksheet. All tours are on flat surfaces with some slight inclines and are accessible. 

The “Foggy Bottom Historic District Walking Tour,” is  available ONLINE HERE  ( https://theclio.com/tour/2098 ) .   The easy-to-follow tour leads you though the alleys, streets, and parks of the four-block Historic District.  Use your phone to visit the 19 stops and learn about its people, lifestyles, history, art, and architecture.  The tour tracks the neighborhood’s transition from working class in the 1870s to its current status.  Each stop features a summary, descriptive details, images from past to present, and sources for additional information.  Walking the tour takes about an hour. 

The “ Foggy Bottom Historic District Arts Walking Tour ,” is  available ONLINE HERE  ( https://theclio.com/tour/2116 ) .  The tour's 13 stops highlight the murals, sculpture, and other arts of the Historic District.  Walking the tour takes less than an hour. 

The " Find Family Fun in Foggy Bottom "  worksheet  allows both adults and children to explore the four block area and learn about the history, engage in discussion, look for our black alley cat (Kitty Snows), and find the playground. 5 cool neighbourhoods to explore in Washington, DC

The US capital’s classic sights will always appeal, but take the time to stray a little further and you’ll find colourful, cosmopolitan neighbourhoods breathing new life into the city.

Many first-time visitors to Washington, DC understandably make a beeline for the striking monuments and museums of the National Mall — the vast expanse of parkland that stretches from the Lincoln Memorial to the US Capitol. Look further afield, however, and the city’s eclectic charm unfurls. Over 131 neighbourhoods, each with their own flavour and flare, can be found throughout the city, from the historic enclaves of Georgetown to the global cafes and jazzy bohemian quarters of Adams Morgan.  

1. Capitol Riverfront and Southwest  

The former site of one of the nation’s oldest naval facilities, Capitol Riverfront has been transformed into a haven for sports fans, nature-lovers and foodies. Set along the banks of the Anacostia River, just south of the US Capitol, this fast-growing, urban area has seen its dining scene blossom in recent years. Now, visitors can enjoy house-brewed beer at Bluejacket , locally-sourced seafood at The Salt Line and spectacular waterfront views at District Winery , to name a few. The area also draws in legions of passionate baseball and soccer fans. Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals have their home stadium here, which features outstanding views of the US Capitol dome from many of its 40,000-plus seats, while Audi Field, home to Major League Soccer’s DC United, offers state-of-the-art facilities that also host a variety of cultural events, community activities and concerts.  

Just around the corner, Southwest and the Wharf is another riverside neighbourhood peppered with idyllic parks and green spaces. This makes it the perfect spot for a variety of watersports, free festivals and unique events, from Pumpkin Palooza to the District’s Holiday Boat Parade and the Running of the Chihuahuas on Cinco de Mayo.

2. Georgetown

Widely regarded as DC’s most historic neighbourhood, Georgetown was originally established in the 1700s as a tobacco-port town and housed a lumber yard, cement works and the Washington Flour Mill. Today, visitors can amble its cobblestone streets to scout out its federal architecture, historic brick-and-frame row houses and iconic landmarks, such as the Old Stone House, the famous steps from The Exorcist and the one-time homes of JFK and TV chef Julia Child. The area is also home to the iconic Blues Alley Club , which is the oldest, continuously-operated jazz supper club in the US and has played host to many international artists.  

For food, head to Georgetown’s waterfront, where an array of restaurants, such as Sequoia , Tony and Joe's Seafood Place , Founding Farmers Fishers & Bakers and Fiola Mare , offer patio seating and scenic views. Those looking for a slightly more upscale experience should visit the 1789 Restaurant & Bar , which serves seasonal, contemporary American cuisine in a historic federal townhouse.

Steeped in African American history, Shaw is one neighbourhood that’s seen major revitalisation in recent years. It’s located in the popular northwest quadrant of Washington, DC and takes its name from Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, who commanded an all-Black regiment during the Civil War. Visitors can learn about the area’s rich history at the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum , which recalls the events of the war through to the Civil Rights movement with related photos, letters, artefacts and soldier’s uniforms.

Shaw also had a thriving alley culture in the 19th and 20th centuries. Located behind DC’s blocks of rowhouses, these intersecting, brick-paved zones, once filled with stables, workshops and working-class dwellings, have now become a mecca for trendy restaurants, hip bars and boutiques. Head to Causa , located in Blagden Alley, for Michelin-starred Peruvian seafood, Andean cuisine and one of the nation’s largest pisco sour libraries. Alternatively, Supra , located just down the street, is the place to sample traditional Georgian fare, including khachapuri (cheese bread and eggs) and khinkali   (soup dumplings).  

4. U Street  

Few of DC’s neighbourhoods feature the variety and notoriety of U Street and its trendy 14th Street corridor. An epicentre of art and African American heritage, this bustling stretch of hospitality-packed real estate includes everything from dive bars to avant-garde dining rooms. It’s also the place to experience the city’s exciting music scene. Bordering the Shaw neighbourhood to the east, the iconic Howard Theatre is one of the best venues to catch a live jazz performance and has seen the likes of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald grace its hallowed stage. Meanwhile, for rock and alternative groups, make a beeline for the revered 9:30 Club . This legendary venue features an electrifying lineup, with sold out shows from upcoming bands and artists.  

U Street is also a unique destination for shopping, with various vintage and artisanal stores, quirky boutiques and bookshops. Stop by Salt & Sundry , located on 14th Street corridor, to peruse its eclectic emporium of home wares, jewellery and gifts. These products are created by a mix of independent makers and designers, both local and international.

5. Adams Morgan

Known for its historic houses, colourful murals and cosmopolitan culinary scene, the Adams Morgan neighbourhood captures the essence of the city’s diversity. Here, restaurants range from Ethiopian and Ghanaian to Dutch, Cajun, Palestinian, Peruvian, Pakistani and Lebanese. Whatever visitors are looking for, they’ll find it along the area’s main thoroughfare — vibrant 18th Street. The pace picks up at night when the District’s iconic bars, such as Roofers Union and Madam’s Organ , host live music, DJ sets and karaoke, while a more lowkey spot, Perry’s Rooftop , serves Japanese fare with an extensive drinks menu, including whiskey and sake cocktails.  

Adams Morgan is also the ideal place to while away a long afternoon. Scout out the region’s kaleidoscope of street art, including vibrant murals, colourful building faces, painted jersey barriers and more, before taking a long stroll through Meridian Hill Park to admire the cascading fountain, which is one of the largest in North America. The best time of year to visit, however, is in September for the annual Adams Morgan Day Festival , which sees the streets come alive with international music, art and food.

The 26 best things to do in D.C. this weekend and next week

The final weekend of the National Cherry Blossom Festival brings two of its biggest events: a parade with floats, marching bands, giant balloons and Disney characters on Constitution Avenue NW, and the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival, with multiple stages of music, dancing and martial arts, as well as food and drink vendors and family activities. The National Gallery of Art’s popular National Gallery Nights after-hours series returns with a party celebrating “spring and all things floral.” Activities include creating wearable flower art, a blossom scavenger hunt, behind-the-scenes tours, pop-up talks, music by DJ Rustam, and bars serving wine and cocktails. All tickets were distributed in a raffle last week, but more tickets will be given out at the entrance to the East Building beginning at 5:30 p.m. (You don’t need tickets to watch dance performances or artist demonstrations on the Fourth Street plaza.) 6 to 9 p.m. Free; tickets required .

Jigger & Pony pop-up at Allegory

Even cocktail fans who’ve never been to Singapore might have heard of Jigger & Pony . No. 14 on last year’s World’s 50 Best Bars list ? Named best international hotel bar at Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards? The 12-year-old bar is noted for its playful originals and clever twists on the classics — its Velvet Negroni is so named because the staff tweaks the preparation and dilution to create a smoother texture and mouthfeel. Why are we hyping up a bar that’s almost 10,000 miles away? Because Jigger & Pony creative director Uno Jang and senior bartender Gabriel Gan are taking over Allegory, the bar tucked inside the Eaton. The event runs, the bar promises, “until we sell out of cocktails.” 8 p.m. Free admission .

‘Game Show: Chad and Pharrell’ at Shanklin Hall

Last week, after news broke that Chad Hugo was suing Pharrell Williams over the rights to the name “the Neptunes,” D.C. DJ and “Tiny Desk” producer Cuzzin B tweeted , “I can definitely tell the difference btwn a Pharrell beat vs a NEPTUNES beat.” The observation struck a nerve, and 7,000 likes and 227 quote tweets later, Cuzzin B is bringing his thoughts into a physical space. He’s hosting a panel discussion and listening session at Shanklin Hall, discussing the Neptunes’ legacy — together and apart — with DJs and producers Daniel Biltmore, Marc Nfinit and DJ Geena Marie at the Adams Morgan social club. 8 p.m. Free .

‘The Art of the Benshi’ film series at the National Museum of Asian Art

This touring film series stops at the Smithsonian after a run in Brooklyn and before heading to Chicago, Los Angeles and Tokyo. In a five-part series of “benshi” performances, or live orators to silent films, the art form returns more than a century after it began with classic, restored films. Three performers are joined by musicians, who will play new and historical scores. Films include the cult classic “A Page of Madness (Kurutta ichipeiji)” and the earliest surviving Japanese animated film, “The Dull Sword (Namakura gatana).” Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7 to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 3 to 6 p.m. Free.

WoCo Fest 2024: Evolve at AMP by Strathmore and the Mansion at Strathmore

The three-day WoCo Fest 2024: Evolve celebrates music from female composers at Strathmore with a spate of performances, workshops and discussions. The festivities include Saturday at the Mansion, a day packed with discussions, food trucks and exhibitor booths, geared toward musicians but open to the public as well. (Tickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested donation of $10.) Pianist Sarah Cahill performs at the end of the day, playing a program based on her “The Future Is Female” album trilogy, showcasing compositions spanning baroque composer Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre and contemporary composer Theresa Wong. Jazz legend Terri Lyne Carrington, a four-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, closes out the festival with a Sunday afternoon show at AMP by Strathmore, a lounge-like club serving food and craft cocktails in North Bethesda’s Pike and Rose neighborhood. Commemorating Abraham Lincoln

One hundred fifty-nine years ago this weekend, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The National Park Service and the theater remember our 16th president with events including guided walking tours covering the story of the assassination, the Lincolns’ love of theater in 1860s Washington and medical care the president received . Ford’s Theatre and the Petersen House (“The House Where Lincoln Died”) are open all day Sunday and Monday, with special performances of “One Destiny,” a two-man play about the events of April 14, 1865, on Monday morning . Spring Garden Market at River Farm

River Farm, located on the Potomac River between Old Town Alexandria and Mount Vernon, is a joy to visit at this time of year, but it’s especially nice during the American Horticultural Society’s Spring Garden Market. More than 40 vendors set up to sell native plants, herbs, ceramics, gardening supplies and decor, dog treats, and much more. Beyond stocking up for your yard or windowsill, you can explore the property, which includes 25 acres of formal and wildlife-friendly natural gardens and an indoor art exhibit, or have a picnic overlooking the river. Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. $5 entry for those arriving on foot or bicycle; $20 per car (includes all occupants).

Blossoms and Starlight at Eastern Market

A new Taylor Swift album drops next week, if you hadn’t heard, and we expect there will be plenty of Taylor-themed dance parties and karaoke and trivia in the coming days. (Trivia, in fact, starts Wednesday.) The first event on our calendar is Blossoms and Starlight in Eastern Market’s North Hall. Tunes come from DJ Tony T, a.k.a. Tony Tomelden. He owns the Pug, the H Street bar that’s become ground zero for Swiftie listening parties, so he probably knows a thing or two. There will be a friendship bracelet-making station, though you can also bring your own to trade, and sequined outfits are “highly encouraged.” The event is open to all ages, but adult beverages will be available. Proceeds benefit Eastern Market’s 150th anniversary fund. 6 to 9 p.m. $20-$35 .

National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade

Mickey and Minnie Mouse are the grand marshals of the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, which fills Constitution Avenue with marching bands, giant balloons, floats and entertainment. The Sugarhill Gang, “American Idol” finalist Colin Stough and D.C.’s own Mambo Sauce are among the performers. The route stretches from the National Archives to the Ellipse, and viewing the parade from the sidewalk is free, though grandstand tickets are available for purchase. 10 a.m. to noon. Free; grandstand seats $25-$40.

Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival

The Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival expanded from one day to two in 2022 to celebrate its 60th anniversary, and the Japan-America Society of Washington D.C. is keeping the expanded format, packing Pennsylvania Avenue NW between Third and Seventh streets. The festival includes multiple stages with traditional and modern music; dance and martial arts performances; a J-pop talent competition; a children’s corner; a traditional marketplace; a “Taste of Japan” section with food and drink vendors, as well as beer gardens and sake pavilions; pavilions dedicated to topics such as technology and the regions of Japan; and hands-on cultural exhibits. Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. $15 for one day or $25 for both days; $20 admission on the day of the event. Free for children 12 and younger.

Pink Beats at National Landing’s Water Park

Pink Beats, the final installment of the Pink in the Park series at National Landing’s Water Park, is essentially a local music festival, starring the wonderfully crafted indie soul of Oh He Dead, the dance-floor-friendly R&B grooves of Wrizzards and the tuneful pop-rock of Broke Royals. Beyond the five acts performing, there are food and drink vendors and other activities. 4 to 9 p.m. Free.

‘An Evening With Esther Perel’ at DAR Constitution Hall

Troubled couples rely on therapist Esther Perel to get to the heart of their problems — and the audience of her “Where Should We Begin” podcast listens in, fly-on-the-wall style, to hear her pearls of wisdom. Now Perel is taking her show on the road for a national speaking tour called “An Evening With Esther Perel: The Future of Relationships, Love & Desire.” Get in the room with Perel at DAR Constitution Hall as she discusses how technology has shifted the nature of relationships in 2024 and how we can embrace and retain our humanity. 8 p.m. $103-$675.

Jacqueline Woodson Block Party at the Kennedy Center

A National Book Award winner, four-time Newbery Honor winner, MacArthur fellow — the Kennedy Center’s education artist-in-residence is gifted with the written word. This weekend, you get to see what happens when Jacqueline Woodson throws a party. Inspired by her book “The Year We Learned to Fly,” this day of family-friendly activities includes double Dutch, break dancing and roller skating demonstrations; a stepping performance and workshop with Step Afrika!; chalk drawing and graffiti demos; music from Eastern High School’s Blue and White Marching Machine; and Woodson reading her book with help from musicians Toshi Reagon and Be Steadwell. Food trucks and vendors will be on-site. 1 to 5:30 p.m. Free.

NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert at the Kennedy Center

Each year, the National Endowment for the Arts honors America’s jazz greats with the Jazz Masters Fellowships . The 2024 class includes trumpet player Terence Blanchard, saxophonist Gary Bartz, composer and organist Amina Claudine Myers, and journalist, broadcaster and D.C. Jazz Festival Artistic Director Willard Jenkins. All four are honored during this concert at the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater: Bartz, Blanchard and Myers will perform with their own groups and make remarks; Jenkins is represented with a performance by the African Rhythms Alumni Quintet. The evening concludes with a tribute to D.C.’s own Duke Ellington. DC Brau’s 13th anniversary

Washington’s oldest brewery is now a teenager. DC Brau, which released the Public Ale to a thirsty city in April 2011, marks its 13th anniversary with a day-long party at its brewery in Upper Northeast. Look for a special lineup of beers — including the freshly rereleased Citizen Belgian pale ale — and a menu of tacos from Taco Man Fred. The jammy Americana of the Brahman Noodles and the Celtic tunes of the O’McPub Band provide the soundtrack, while Jinx Proof is on-site for souvenir tattoos. 1 to 9 p.m. Free .

All Hat, No Cattle at Jackie Lee’s

Heaven Forbid are D.C.’s hip urban cowboys: a quintet sporting large hats, bolo ties and boots, mixing original two-stepping tunes with covers of Vince Gill or Bobby Bare, all driven by the sultry or mournful sound of pedal steel. They play country songs, but they’re more likely to strike up “Guitars, Cadillacs” than some radio hit about a pickup. After a residency at the now-closed Public Option, Heaven Forbid is moving its monthly All Hat, No Cattle party to Jackie Lee’s in Brightwood, where the bar is taking out tables and chairs to make more room for dancing. Masters Costume and Cocktail Party at Duke’s Grocery Navy Yard

Break out your green jackets, red Nike Dri-Fit polos and camouflage bucket hats: The Masters are back, and Duke’s Grocery is hosting a viewing party and costume contest. Snack on pimento cheese or egg salad sandwiches and sip John Daly cocktails (an Arnold Palmer with added vodka) while watching the tournament on multiple TVs. D.C. Emancipation Day at Freedom Plaza

In April 1862 — more than eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation — Congress passed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed all enslaved people in Washington, compensated their owners and provided funds for them to emigrate if they chose. Since 2005, the city has marked the anniversary with a parade and pomp. Freedom Plaza is again the center of attention, with a parade at 2 p.m.; a concert featuring Ginuwine, Kelly Price, jazzman Marcus Johnson and go-go stalwarts E.U. featuring Sugar Bear at 3 p.m.; and fireworks at 8:30 p.m. 2 p.m. Free.

Pages in the Park at Meridian Hill Park

Grab a book and a picnic for Pages in the Park, where you can spend 30 minutes mingling over a potluck meal before an hour of individual reading time. There’s also a book swap — bring any books you no longer want, and take a new one home. Extras will be donated. The event is hosted in the grassy area at the top of the park. 3 p.m. Free.

‘New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024’ at the National Museum of Women in the Arts

The National Museum of Women in the Arts tapped 28 emerging artists from across the globe for a show based on visions for creating a new world. See their alternative realities in “New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024,” the second major exhibition since NMWA reopened last fall after an extensive renovation. Visitors can tour the new gallery spaces and see seven works created specifically for the museum for its recurring “Women to Watch” exhibition series, including site-specific installations. Paws and Petals Yappy Hour at Metrobar

One of the final events of cherry blossom season is this dog-friendly afternoon hang in Metrobar’s beer garden. Mezcal Night at Bar Charley

Expect a “simple witchy ritual,” magic-themed drinks, tarot readings by Skye Miranda, astrology analysis and a drag performance by self-proclaimed “slasher flick rocker chick” Jane Saw. De La Senne beer tasting at the Sovereign

De La Senne is one of the most acclaimed craft brewers in Brussels, and the beers that regularly make it to this side of the Atlantic are flavorful — no filtering or pasteurization — and on the lower end of the alcohol spectrum, such as the bitter, hoppy blonde Taras Boulba or the dry, citrusy Zinnebir pale ale. De La Senne’s beers are regulars on tap on the Sovereign, but this is a special night at the Georgetown Belgian beer bar: Brewery co-founder Yvan de Baets is visiting, bringing what the Sovereign calls “hyper-fresh” kegs of beer, plus rare bottles of Saison de la Senne and Wadesa #9 tripel, complex beers blended with lambic ales from Brussels neighbors Cantillon.
