Stories About Brussels, An Insider's View by Local Storytellers Provided by Ambassadors Tours

Walking Brussels in a day

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and one of the most exciting cities to visit in Europe. With places like the Royal Palace, Cinquantenaire, and Cathedral of St, Michael and St. Gudula, there is something for everyone. One day can be spent visiting museums like Royal Museum of Fine Arts and Royal Museum of Art and History and the next can be hopping around the centre to admire Grand Place, Brussels Town Hall, and Manneken Pis, a famous bronze statue depicting a boy peeing into the fountain.

Mini Europe, a unique experience, allows you to travel around a model of the Old Continent and learn about its towns in just a couple of hours. And it’s perfectly located beside the top attraction of Brussels: Atomium. A symbol of the city, it carries 8 spheres of different heights with the top sphere (92m) dedicated to beautiful panoramic views of the city and a restaurant. And not to be missed is the LED light show held every evening!

Take a free walking tour from Freetour.com and let the guides show you around their city to give you unique perspectives of the sights and culinary scene. Besides Belgium’s well-known waffles, chocolate, and french fries, there are several traditional dishes to indulge in with both Belgium and French influences. Gourmet or not, you’re in for a real treat at any of the restaurants, cafes, and bars, especially when accompanied by local Belgium beer.

The Best Guided Walking Tours To Take in Brussels

Explore the delights of Brussels with a tour to suit your tastes

When it comes to walking tours in Brussels, you’re spoilt for choice. There are those dedicated to Art Nouveau, comic book murals, chocolate havens and even expert beer cafés. So picking one can be a challenge. Don’t fret: we’ve done the work for you. Here are seven niche tours we can highly recommend.

Chocolate walking tour and workshop by global enterprises.

Try the chocolate-covered strawberries at Godiva

This one’s a must for foodies. Belgium has a stellar reputation for turning cocoa beans into chocolatey goodness and now you can try your hand. This most indulgent of walks starts in front of the first Godiva store, built in 1926. Next, it’s onto many a chocolate legend , such as Neuhaus, inventor of the soft-centred praline. For three hours, you’ll make your way from one chocolate temple to the next, passing landmarks and sampling authentic and exotic creations as you go. At the end, you get to make your own pralines. For those who consider themselves avid snackers but terrible cooks, this tour by Brussels Chocolate Tours is a great half-day out. Duration: 4 hours Price: €70 (£63) for adults, €40 (£36) for kids (6-12) Starting point: Grand-Place 21, Brussels, Belgium

Walking Tour by Viva Brussels

Backpackers and penniless students will be delighted to hear of this tour , organised three times a day come rain or shine – because you get to pay whatever you can afford. Besides hallmarks such as Manneken Pis , La Bourse and the Royal Palace , a young team of guides will share with you the capital’s urban legends and lesser-known mysteries. They’ll also give you the local scoop on where to get the best fries, cheapest waffles, free museums and beers at democratic prices. In the end, you simply pay what you thought the tour was worth or what’s within the limits of your pocket book. Price: whatever amount you’re willing to give Starting point: Grand-Place, Brussels, Belgium , look for the orange umbrella

Comic Book Tour by Bravo Discovery

Spot Hergé’s Quick and Flupke spying on Agent 15

Belgian-born comic strip heroes Tintin , Marsupilami and Spirou are everywhere in Brussels, but you need to know where to look. Going in search of the icons painted on walls throughout the city centre and Laeken during a tour is the best way to discover the nooks and crannies of the capital. Some of the frescoes play into the architectural qualities of the location they’ve been assigned, such as the Ric Hochet wall, where the adventurous reporter is dangling from a rooftop to swing into a girl’s bedroom. The project was launched by the City of Brussels in 1993 and has come to count more than 50 murals, and this number increases every year. Duration: 2 hours Price: €10 (£9), €9 (£8) for students and free for children Starting point: in front of City Hall on the Grand-Place, Brussels, Belgium

Brussels Sightjogging

Jogging allows you to reach the must-see spots of the Belgian capital quickly and easily

These private tours are great for athletes who tend to miss exercise on their city trips. The energetic guides – all locals with a passion for running as well as the city they call home – promise to stick to your pace and the distance you’ve determined while they show you the highlights of Brussels . This is certainly a different way of discovering the city. It’s one of the most adaptable experiences and can be one of the most scenic: the tour starts under the towering Atomium and heads through several parks, leaving you surprised at just how much green space there is in the capital. Duration: 1.5 hours (approx) Price: €39 (£35), 25% discount for students Starting point: dependent on the selected tour

Beer Tasting Experience by Sandemans Brussels Tours

Sample some of the country’s famous beers for a taste of Brussels

Beer culture runs deep in Belgium’s identity. In three of the capital’s specialised beer bars, you’ll get to enjoy one of the famous Trappist beers, brewed in monasteries under the strict supervision of the monks, and the Lambic, a Brussels specialty made exclusively in the Pajottenland region. It’s the perfect occasion to ask questions, and your guides are overflowing with beer knowledge so they’ll love to offer personalised beer advice tailor-made to your taste buds. Don’t forget your ID for this adults-only tour . Duration: 3 hours Price: €19 (£17) Starting point: Scott’s Bar, 2 Rue Montagne aux Herbes Potagères, Brussels, Belgium

Art Nouveau Tour by Bravo Discovery

Marvel at the Albert Ciamberlani house built in 1897 by Paul Hankar

Brussels played a pioneering role in the development of the Art Nouveau style, with its rounded lines, oceans of glass and fanciful iron flourishes, thanks to the visionary Victor Horta . On this tour , you’ll get a chance to see Horta’s famed Brussels mansions, along with the private home of another Art Nouveau pioneer, Paul Hankar. First up is the impressive Musical Instruments Museum by Paul Saintenoy, and closing the tour is the atelier and house of Horta himself, now a museum. The price of the tour is whatever you’re willing or able to pay. Duration: Every Saturday for 2.5 hours Price: whichever amount you’re willing to give Starting point: in front of City Hall on the Grand-Place, Brussels, Belgium

Brussels Mysteries and Legends Tour by Global Enterprises

The Vatican isn’t the only hub to boast signs of secret societies

The Freemason and Templar societies are hardly confined to the borders of Italy’s Vatican or Dan Brown’s imagination – on this tour you’ll learn more about how these legendary organisations also exist in Brussels. Secret symbols are hiding in plain sight all over the city, in churches and temples, although they often go unnoticed by both visitors and locals. The passionate guides on this tour will point them out. The tour includes an entrance fee to the underground Coudenberg ruins, former seat of government and home of Charles V, and at the end, a hot waffle and chocolate to reward you for your efforts. Duration: 4 hours Price: €65 (£58) for adults, €35 (£31.40) for kids (6-12) Starting point: Grand-Place 21, Brussels, Belgium

Unmissable guided tours in Brussels

17 June 2022

Tours with passionate guides are the best way to really get to know Brussels.

Whether they’re original , gastronomic , heritage or are simply unmissable, here are the guided tours that you cannot miss under any circumstances if you’re looking to experience the best of our capital.

Brussels of yesteryear

Discover the richness of the historical heart of Brussels on foot with Claude and Dominique, two guides with a passion for art and history, who founded Discover-b . The walk, which lasts between 2 and 3 hours, can be adapted to suit your wishes. It will include a museum, other more upmarket or more popular districts, and the unmissable classics (Mont des Arts, Place Royale, the Sablon, the Manneken-Pis, the Grand-Place, the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries, etc.), which form the basis of these tours and give us a view of the past to better understand the city of today.

Guided tour stopping by Manneken-Pis

Bright Brussels

The Cities by Bike promise is a bold one: to show you more in a three-hour bicycle tour than you’d see in three days on foot! Lead by Robin, this team of dedicated guides make good on their promise: the Royal Palace, Matonge, the Atomium, the European Quarter, street art… but also parks and gardens, historical cobbled streets, vibrant squares, Art Nouveau masterpieces... And the cherry on the waffle, a delicious gourmet break is included in the price. In short, you’re treated to a little concentration of Brussels with every pedal stroke.

Guided cycling tour heading towards Mont des Arts

Sweet like chocolate

Another Belgian national treasure is chocolate. Gourmets and chocolate lovers alike cannot afford to miss the chocolate-themed guided tour devised by Brussels Walking Tour . Accompanied by a guide who has more than 15 years of experience, set off on a four-hour chocolate immersion tour, including a three-hour walk through the historic heart of Brussels, where the history of the city and that of chocolate are intricately intertwined. You'll learn all the secrets of the production process and which are the best shops in the city. Moreover, the walk is followed by a one-hour workshop where you can try your hand at making some chocolate and the famous Belgian praline. Warning, this tour is highly addictive.

Beer secrets

Interesting in the secrets behind Belgian beers?  Beer Secret  has made this its trademark, and offers two comprehensive packages for beer lovers. You can opt for the traditional tasting tour: an exploration, off the beaten track, of traditional beers, combined with other local delights and packed with anecdotes and discoveries of hidden locations. The second option includes a visit to a brewery and a meeting with a brewer. You'll learn everything, from production to distribution, with, of course, a look at the history of the first local beer, lambic. Fun and informative visits to be enjoyed in moderation.

Architectural mastery

Art Nouveau enthusiasts know that Brussels was the cradle of this movement, which spread rapidly throughout Europe, with its nature-inspired curves, noble woods, powerful wrought iron, rich colours and dazzling skylights. Bravo Discovery offers a comprehensive Art Nouveau tour that starts at the Grand-Place, before moving on to the Châtelain neighbourhood, where some of the movement's most stunning examples were built. This tour is an opportunity to see some of the most beautiful buildings designed by the great masters of the genre, including the legendary Victor Horta. An optional, bonus visit of the famous Horta House can be added to the end of the tour. Every Saturday, the visit is free of charge (tips welcome).

On board, audio explanations are available in numerous languages, and there's even a children's version, so everyone can enjoy the experience. Definitely going to judge all future tours against this one. Pascal was so great and you could feel his love for the city in the tour. We had so much fun with this tour and definitely walked away feeling like we’d gotten the best of Brugge.

We had a wonderful tour with Edward! He was so knowledgeable and friendly and we really got to know the city from a local perspective.

We had a great walking tour with Ray. It was very informative and hit all the must see spots. Ray was a super knowledgeable and fun guy to walk with. I would definitely recommend this to anyone traveling to Bruges.

With heavy rain: we make sure everyone is properly dressed for bad weather or divert into buildings.

The number of visitors to Barcelona has skyrocketed in the last couple of years. While most jobs in the city depend on tourism, this development has also had negative effects on the citizens: crowded streets, increased noise levels, higher rent for apartments, increase in prices for foods and drinks (especially in restaurants), etc. However, there…

How long did the Brussels walking tour take to complete? Thanks for sharing!

Alie, It really depends on how long you spend at each stop. If you simply walked the route without stopping, each walking route can be done in less than an hour.

My perfect day in brussels: itinerary & self-guided walking tour.

Belgium’s capital is not just about beer, waffles and chocolate. But that’s not a bad start.

By spending just one day in Brussels you will be able to soak up its UNESCO-listed architecture and the vitality for which this cosmopolitan city is famous. Make every minute count with this 1-day Brussels itinerary which includes the very best things to do in the so-called capital of Europe.

To help you along your way, I’ve included a map with directions which you can use as a Brussels self-guided walking tour. Brussels is known as Brussel in Flemish; the city is known as Bruxelles in French.

Is One Day in Brussels Enough?

One day in Brussels is enough time to hit its highlights. These are scattered across a relatively small area and are clearly signposted. This is a walkable city.

However, if you are interested in visiting the city’s museums or the Atomium, or want to explore its famous Art Nouveau architecture, I recommend spending two or three days here.

Brussels is one of the best bases from which to explore Belgium by train.

1-Day Brussels Itinerary (Map + Self-Guided Walking Tour)

Whether you are visiting Brussels on a day trip or staying overnight, this itinerary will give you the jump start that you need. Simply tweak it according to your interests and available time.

To help you on your way, I have custom-made a map of the route that this Brussels itinerary follows. It covers a distance of three miles and includes stops for you to sample the food and drink for which this city is known.

Think of this as a free Brussels self-guided walking tour . For an interactive map with walking directions, or to send to your phone, click here or on the image.

MANNEKIN PIS

Begin your Brussels sightseeing tour with the city’s mascot but manage your expectations.

Protected by a wrought-iron fence, this is a teeny weeny statue of a pissing urchin in a sort of shrine. Many origin tales and myths swirl around this little fella, but the most popular one posits that he was cast in the 17 th Century to embody the irreverent spirit of the city.

THE GRAND PLACE

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Europe’s most magnificent squares. The Grand Place was the hub of commercial life in the emerging city from the 12 th Century and became Brussels’ civil and political centre from the 15 th Century.

But what are those magnificent buildings lining the Grand Place?

With its 96m spire rising above the Grand Place like an exclamation mark, the Hôtel de Ville dominates the square. Much of the north side of the Grand Place is occupied by the 19 th Century Maison de Roi.

The west side of the plaza is home to the city’s gable-roofed guildhouses . On the eastern side of the Grand Place, the existing guildhouses have been subsumed into one façade.

What about the Bourse?

La Bourse (Brussels Stock Exchange) frequently pops up on lists of things to see in Brussels. However, it has been undergoing renovation since 2020 and was shrouded in scaffolding when I visited in 2023. There are plans for it to reopen as a museum of Belgian beer.

MONT DES ARTS

Mont des Arts links the Lower Town and Upper Town of Brussels.

Literally meaning Hill of the Arts after a planned art museum that was never built, an imposing equestrian statue of King Albert I graces its lower end. From here, a landscaped garden and stone staircase lead to a terrace in the Upper Town.

Linger here for a few minutes to take in the views.

CATHEDRAL OF ST. MICHAEL AND ST. GUDULA

Known simply as St. Gudula by locals, this magnificent Gothic cathedral is dedicated jointly to St. Michael the Archangel and St. Gudula. Begun in 1215, this place of worship was 300 years in the making.

It’s safe to say that it is more striking on the outside than on the inside. However, it is worth venturing inside to take a peek at the wonderful stained glass windows and its elaborate carved oak pulpit. This depicts the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden as the Virgin Mary and some cherubs helpfully stamp on the head of a serpent dragon.

Entrance is free.

ROYAL PALACE OF BRUSSELS

The large but uninspiring Royal Palace is the official residence of the Belgian royal family. At its core, the Palais Royal is a clumsy conversion of 18 th Century townhouses.

vast facade of palace building fronted by small landscaped garden

If you are visiting Brussels between July and September, you will be able to see inside the palace (entry is free). If you are not in town during these months, by all accounts you are not missing much.

COUNDENBERG PALACE

Concealed beneath the 18 th Century Hôtel Bellevue are the remains of the Coudenberg Palace .

Staring life as a fortified castle in the Middle Ages, it kept a careful watch over Brussels from Coudenberg Hill. Over 600 years it was transformed into one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe.

After a devastating fire in 173, it lay forgotten underground. The charred ruins of the palace were pulled down and the ground levelled for the construction of the new royal district.

Today, the remains of the Palais du Coudenberg have been extensively excavated and can be reached from the Musée BELvue.

PLACE DU PETIT SABLON

The small but perfectly formed Place du Petit Sablon is a delightful refuge from the busy city. Formerly a horse market, it was laid out as a public garden in 1890.

landscaped garden square

Take a closer look at the wrought-iron balustrade surrounding the garden. This is embellished with 48 bronze statuettes that represent the medieval guilds.

At the rear of the park, there are ten statues, illustrating life in 16th Century Belgium through its scholars and humanists (most of these will not be familiar to most people).

CHURCH OF THE BLESSED LADY OF SABLON

gothic church and a small landscaped garden

Also known as the Church of Our Lady of Victories at the Sablon or Notre Dame du Sablon, this 15 th Century church began life as a chapel for the guild of archers in 1304. However, its fortunes changed for the better in 1348 when a statue of Mary, said to possess healing powers, was brought from Antwerp. This humble chapel became a pilgrimage centre and was transformed into a proper church to accommodate its visitors.

And that statue of Mary? The Protestants chopped it up for firewood in 1565 but two carvings of a boat with passengers and its sacred cargo tell its story.

ROYAL GALLERY OF SAINT HUBERT (GALERIES ROYALES SAINT-HUBERT)

I’m not a big shopaholic but not even I would skip the Royal Gallery of Saint Hubert.

wrought iron and glass domed roof of shopping gallery

Featuring magnificent glass-vaulted galleries – du Rio, de la Reine and des Princes – this has to be one of Europe’s finest indoor shopping arcades. Dating from 1847, it is certainly one of the first.

It’s a lovely place to stop for a coffee or a Belgian beer.

DINNER ON RUE DES BOUCHERS

But perhaps it’s time for something a little more substantial. If that’s the case, then you are in luck.

Rues de Bouchers, which slices the Hubert Galleries in two, is Brussels’ best-known restaurant ghetto. The touristy restaurants are a little hit-and-miss but I had a very good meal at Aux Armes de Bruxelles , which had been recommended by my hotel.

When to Visit Brussels

The best time to visit Brussels is between March and May, and in September and October. Accommodation will be cheaper and there is less chance of rain.   Visit Brussels in summer and you can look forward to warmer days and nights and more festivals. But you can also expect a lot more visitors.   Although winter in Belgium can be grey and dreary, the twinkling lights and mulled wine of Brussels’ Christmas markets will lift your spirits.

How to Get There

Brussels not only has an international airport, but it is also a terminus for Eurostar trains from London. This means that Brussels is an excellent day trip from London .

Thanks to its excellent train connections, Brussels is hard to beat as a base for a Belgium vacation.

If it is your first time in Brussels, its train stations can be confusing.

Brussels Midi / Brussels Sud /  Zuidstation

This gloomy station in a gloomy part of town is the main international hub, including that for Eurostar trains. To be avoided whenever possible.

Brussels Centrale / Gare Central / Brussel Centraal

As its name suggests, this is the most central of the city’s stations. This is not a place where you would like to linger but it is convenient.

Brussels Nord / Gare du Nord / Noordstation

Although many trains will pass through here, it’s unlikely that you will use this station as a departure point.

Most flights to Belgium’s capital land at Brussels International Airport, 14 km northeast of the city centre. From here, regular trains run to the city’s three main railway stations.

Budget airlines may land at Brussels-Charleroi airport, located 50 km south of the city centre. From here, there is a shuttle bus service to the city centre.

How to Get Around

If you stick with this Brussels itinerary, you shouldn’t need to use public transport. Many of its main attractions are scattered over a relatively compact area and are reachable on foot.

However, the user-friendly network of trams, buses and metro lines might be useful if you are staying out of the city centre or if you are visiting attractions further afield.

There is also the inevitable hop-on-hop-off (HOHO) bus service.

Where to Stay in Brussels

Although you can visit Brussels on a day trip, I recommend booking a hotel for at least one night. This will allow you to make the most of your day and enjoy the city’s bars and restaurants in the evening when the day-trippers have departed.

Here are my recommendations:

Splurge : Hotel Le Dixseptième

I stayed at this elegant boutique hotel in the heart of the city centre. It was a remarkably peaceful refuge, considering its location, with stellar service.

Mid-range : B&B Villa 36

This small 3-star guesthouse close to Brussels City Hall has attracted fabulous reviews. Breakfast is included in the room rates.

If You Have More Than One Day in Brussels

Here are a few suggestions if you are in Brussels for two days or more.

CHOCO-STORY

Belgium is a chocoholic’s dream destination and Brussels is the birthplace of this long tradition. Visit Choco-Story to learn more about the cultivation, production and marketing of chocolate.

The Belgians love their comics and some of the finest examples of this art form are on display in the Comics Art Museum , housed in another Art Nouveau building designed by Victor Horta.

Brussels has street art with a theme. Since the early 90s, characters and authors of the Franco-Belgian comics have decorated walls in the city centre and Laeken district.

OLD MASTERS MUSEUM

If your artistic tastes veer more towards the traditional, spend a few hours exploring the works of Flemish artists at the Old Masters Museum .

Address: Rue de la Régence 3

MAGRITTE MUSEUM

This was one of the places that I wanted to visit in Brussels but I ran out of time. It is located in Magritte’s former home and is reportedly a Surrealist extravaganza.

Address : Pl. Royale 1

THE ATOMIUM

This famous Brussels landmark, located in the northern part of the city, represents a molecule blown up 165 million times. The Atomium was built for the World Fair in 1958 and although it never became the symbol of the city as intended, it is reportedly an enjoyable excursion.

Address: Pl. de l’Atomium 1

MINI-EUROPE

Located at the foot of the Atomium, Mini-Europe displays reproductions of monuments from around 80 European cities.

Is Brussels Safe for Solo Travellers?

The priority for female solo travellers is  staying safe when travelling alone . Brussels is a relatively small city and its tourist area felt relaxed with locals and visitors enjoying its attractions, bars and restaurants. There is a but though. As in many cities, petty crime, including pickpocketing, is not unusual and I found Brussels Centrale station unpleasant after dark. In recent years, there has also been the threat of terrorist attacks. As ever, a little bit of common sense goes a long way. Although Brussels has a low crime rate, remain vigilant. Keep your belongings close to you and use your hotel safe to store valuables.

Ready to spend a day in Brussels?

Well, that’s a wrap! I hope that you have a wonderful day in Bruxelles.

If you have found this itinerary helpful and are planning further travel in Belgium, take a peek at my other guides (I suggest starting with this 1-week Belgium itinerary ).

Gorgeous Ghent is another terrific base for exploring the country by train. Belgium is synonymous with chocolate and Bruges is a honeypot for chocoholics .

Consider some of its lesser-touristed gems, such as Mechelen . I love Leuven , which is home to the oldest botanical garden in Belgium . Spend a day in Hasselt to sip gin at the Jenniver Museum or chase cherry blossom in Japanse Tuin Hasselt .

Happy travels!

Bruges Canal Tours: Everything You Need To Know

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

During our recent family trip to Europe, Abby and I took a  day trip from Brussels to Bruges , a beautiful town in Belgium. We both wanted to go on one of the legendary Bruges canal tours. I’m so glad we did! This fairytale European city needs to be on your bucket list!

Where is Bruges?

Bruges is a serene small Flemish town just northwest of  Brussels . Visiting Bruges is a perfect day trip from Brussels and is easily accessible by train.

Bruges is known as an idyllic small European city steeped in historical charm. It’s home to gorgeous canals and many fascinating landmarks. Furthermore, The city also has many great restaurants, pubs, and street-side vendors.

Visiting Bruges, Belgium

If you are visiting Brussels for a few days, taking an extra day to go to Bruges is well worth the time. Its gorgeous canals winding along against ancient stone buildings have led Bruges to be called the “Venice of the North.”

In this blog post, I want to provide information about taking a Bruges canal tour, highlight the city’s history, and discuss some landmarks you’ll likely see on these Bruges canal tours.

Getting to Bruges from Brussels

From Bruges, you just need to hop on the Belgium intercity train. You can board directly from one of the main Brussels train stations, including Bruxelles-Nord (Brussels North), Bruxelles-Central (Brussels Central), and Bruxelles-Midi (Brussels South).

The Brussels to Bruges train runs all day, and the ride is just over an hour.

The Belgium train website has a  dedicated page for the Brussels to Bruges train route , which is a great resource. You can buy tickets from that page as well.

The route trip Brussels to Bruges train tickets are a standard € 32.00 for adults. However, there are a lot of discounted ticket options listed as well, and most are € 17.50 or less.

The Bruges Canal Tours

Once you arrive in Bruges, you should have a game plan for your canal tour. It’s helpful to know a little bit about the city's layout.

Bruges rests within a mesh of several canals that penetrate and encircle the city. These canals ultimately allow boat access to the North Sea, located about 20 kilometers north of the city. The town’s access to the North Sea made Bruges a vital shipping hub for centuries.

The canals lining the town are relatively inaccessible as they are flanked everywhere by houses and other structures. Because of this, there are only a few places, other than bridges, where you can see the canals.

Therefore, the best way to see these picturesque canals is on a boat tour!

Planning Bruges Canal Tours

There are five landing stages along the canals. These are the only places you can embark on a canal tour. The routes and prices are generally the same across the different tour operators. There are several canal tour operators, each with their own open-air boats.  They pretty much all follow the same route, so in my opinion, the best Bruges canal tour is the one with the shortest line.

Bruges Canal Tour Boarding Locations

Boarding takes place at the following locations. Each tour operator will leave from a different location, so be sure to check their website.

  •  Michielssens, Huidenvettersplein 13
  •  Coudenys, Rozenhoedkaai
  •  De Meulemeester, Wollestraat 32
  •  Gruuthuse, Nieuwstraat 11
  •  Stael, Katelijnestraat 4

Scroll around the above map of Bruges to get a lay of the land!

The Bruges Canal Tour boat trip takes around 30 minutes. The boats typically operate between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, with 5:30 often being the last tour. Tours generally operate most of the year, except in January and early February.

However, tour availability will vary by operator and may change based on events like municipal construction projects, canal restoration initiatives, and severe weather.

Bruges Canal Tours Tickets

Unlike the  canal tours in Amsterdam  and the  Seine River cruises in Paris , you cannot book Bruges canal tour tickets in advance. You buy your tickets directly from the tour companies at the landing stages. As of writing this, the Bruges Canal Tour price for adult tickets is € 12.00, and children’s tickets are € 7.00.

You may need to wait in line at the landing stages to purchase tickets. The canal tours are very popular and will get busy. Bruges has an active cruise ship industry (Norwegian, Holland America, Windstar, Celebrity), and the town will fill up with  cruise  passengers on day excursions.

The extra traffic means lines for the canal tours will get longer after about 11 am. Before 11 am is the best time to ensure you have shorter lines. It also gives you the rest of the day to explore Bruges.

TIP: Get in line for your canal tour as early as possible in Bruges.

Private canal tours are also available. Several companies offer tours with different types of boats. Contact the companies directly to find out more.

There are a couple of great s mall-group Bruges canal tours available through Get Your Guide . They also include a Bruges walking tour. These are a great option if you want to be able to buy Bruges canal tour tickets in advance.

Other Things to Consider

During the canal tour, the boat guide will comment on the significant landmarks and history of the area. During our  day trip to Bruges , our canal tour guide did a great job narrating the tour and pointing out interesting areas, landmarks, and historical sights. Most guides can speak multiple languages and will do their best to tailor the language to the passengers’ needs.

The boats are cash-only. Be sure to bring a few Euros to tip your tour guide.

If you want to take pictures, try to be at the front, back, or side of the boat. Most of the boats have a line of seats down the middle, but people may block your pictures if you sit there.

The boats are open-air and uncovered, so be sure to wear your sunscreen! Also, the tours can get pretty chilly, depending on the time of year, so bring a jacket. We love the  Amazon Essentials packable jackets  for our travels.

It’s always helpful to know the history and significance of a city prior to visiting. So, I want to take some time here to talk more in-depth about Bruges and, of course, the canals. Then, I will share some of the incredible landmarks that you will see from your Bruges canal tour.

The History Of Bruges And Its Canals

Bruges has witnessed a remarkable evolution over the centuries. Its history encapsulates the ebb and flow of urban development, from its Viking origins to a flourishing medieval center, economic decline, and eventual modern-day revival.

The city’s tremendous ability to adapt to changing circumstances and preserve its cultural heritage is a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Danish people across time.

Origins of Bruges, Belgium

The origin of Bruges can be traced to the 9th century when Vikings established a fortress on the banks of the Reie River. The name “Bruges” is believed to be derived from the Old Dutch word “Burg,” meaning fortress. The city gradually developed into a bustling medieval trade center due to its strategic location and access to the North Sea.

The Golden Era of Bruges

Bruges experienced its golden era during the late medieval period, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city became a major commercial and cultural hub, attracting merchants, artists, and scholars across Europe.

Bruges's thriving wool and textile industry and sophisticated network of canals contributed to its prosperity. It was home to the influential Bourse, one of the earliest stock exchanges in the world.

Bruges Economic Decline

Despite its flourishing period, Bruges faced economic challenges in the 16th century. The silting of the Zwin, a vital waterway for trade, led to a decline in maritime activity, impacting Bruges’ economy.

Additionally, geopolitical shifts and the rise of other European trading centers contributed to the city's gradual decline in prominence.

Modern Times and Revival of Bruges

For several centuries, Bruges endured a period of relative obscurity. However, in the 19th century, efforts were made to preserve its medieval architecture, and the city gained recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.

The 20th century saw a revival in Bruges’ fortunes, with tourism becoming a key driver of its economy. The city’s well-preserved medieval structures, including the Belfry of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, attract millions of visitors annually.

What Do You See on the Bruges Canal Tours?

During the Bruges canal tours, your tour guide will highlight many fascinating landmarks. Each place gives you a window into the long history of this amazing city.

Like many European cities, it’s steeped in lore that spans epochs, and seemingly every bridge or building has a colorful and long legacy.

Here is a list of many sites you will probably see on the Bruges canal tours.

Founded in 1245, the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde boasts serene white-colored house fronts and a tranquil convent garden.

This UNESCO World Heritage site was once the residence of beguines—emancipated laywomen leading pious and celibate lives. Today, the beguinage is home to the Order of St. Benedict nuns.

Saint John’s Hospital

With an eight-hundred-year history, Saint John’s Hospital has cared for pilgrims, travelers, the poor, and the sick. Explore the medieval wards where nuns and monks practiced mercy, the chapel, and a remarkable collection of archives, artworks, medical instruments, and six paintings by Hans Memling.

Church of Our Lady

The Church of Our Lady showcases Bruges’ artisans’ craftsmanship through its 115.5 meters high brick tower. The church has valuable art, including Michelangelo’s renowned Madonna and Child, numerous paintings, 13th-century painted crypts, and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold. Abby and I visited after our canal tour, and it was incredible!

Groeninge Museum

Offering a diverse overview of Belgian plastic arts history, the Groeninge Museum features Flemish Primitives, 18th and 19th-century neoclassical pieces, Flemish Expressionism masterpieces, and post-war modern art.

Ambachtshuis Huidevetters

Built by hide tanners, this craft house near Rozenhoedkaai has two wings. The north wing, demolished in 1629, was replaced in 1630 under the guidance of Bruges architect Jan De Smet. The building was restored in 1912. It has been used as a fishmonger and stockfish farm since the mid-19th century.

Belfry & Carillon

Bruges’ tallest tower, the Belfry, standing 83 meters tall, houses a melodic carillon with 47 bells. Climbing its 366 steps rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view of Bruges and its surroundings.

Fish Market

Originally located at Markt Square, the fish market was moved here in the 18th century due to complaints about the stench. Since the Middle Ages, buyers and sellers have come together at the Bruges fish market. Fresh saltwater fish, once a luxury, is still sold every morning from Wednesday to Saturday.

These small whitewashed almshouses, dating back to the 14th century, are scattered around Bruges. Wealthy townspeople or guilds established almshouses to house poor older adults or widows. Over 46 blocks have been preserved, with 43 still occupied.

Burghers’ Lodge

Situated on Jan Van Eyckplein, the Poortersloge (Burgher’s Lodge) served as a meeting spot for the Society of the White Bear in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Later, it became the city’s Academy of Arts (1720-1890) and the State Archives (1912-2012).
