DAY 1: CASABLANCA, THE WHITE CITY

Even though this trip is only a week long, the experiences you have on it will be with you forever. When you arrive at Casablanca's Mohammed V International Airport, the adventure begins. After passing through immigration and customs, you'll find your professional, English-speaking driver waiting to take you to your hotel. You'll come to think of him as a friend who goes out of his way to make your trip enjoyable and show you a side of Morocco that most tourists never see.

As you make your way to the hotel, you'll be soaking it all in.Do you find Casa blanca to be a bit more cutting edge than you anticipated? Maybe you've seen the beautiful djellabas that the older men and women of Morocco wear...

The Hassan II Mosque is a must-see if you get there early enough in the day, so have your driver take you there. As its namesake, King Hassan II, planned, this is one of the most recognizable buildings in Casablanca. The mosque's minaret's turquoise and green hues are echoed by the Atlantic Ocean below. You'll need to squint at the top of the world's tallest minaret to make out the intricate designs.

Walking inside, you'll get a close look at the artwork and be taken aback by the ornate arches and intricate design of the building. Inquire with your tour guide about the spiritual allegory hidden within the architecture.

DAY 2: IMPERIAL CITIES MODERN RABAT & ANCIENT FES

Travel today to Fes, a place with deep historical roots in Morocco. As you make your way to the modern city of Rabat, where you'll have lunch, take in the beautiful scenery outside the window.

Rabat, Morocco's capital, is a beachside metropolis on the cutting edge of urban development. Rabat has an  authentic atmosphere because it is not a popular tourist destination.

Stop by a small restaurant in Rabat to sample some of Morocco's finest cuisine.it's ideal when you can avoid a tourist trap and eat at a local joint. Visit the palace of Morocco's monarch or stroll a palm tree–lined avenue. We will drive over the impressive Mohammed VI Bridge.

The Medina of Fes was established in the 9th century, and as you enter the city from the outside, you'll first pass through the current New City. Donkeys are the only mode of transportation allowed within the city's medieval walls. It has more than nine thousand narrow streets, some of which are so tight that you'll have to walk side by side. Let your mind wander to a time when you entered a culture that has been unchanged for millennia.

DAY 3: THE ANCIENT GATED IMPERIAL CITY OF FES

After spending the night in a traditional Moroccan riad - some of which are over 800 years old - you will enjoy a delicious breakfast of authentic Moroccan cuisine and hear different options of how to spend your day from your guide. We will have a driving tour and a walking tour. In the bazaar, local artisans are eagarly awaiting your arrival, where you will get to learn how traditional Berber rugs are woven, have a private tour of our famed leather tannery, and try your hand at our beautiful and delicate Moroccan pottery.

Fes is a place with deep historical roots in Morocco. It is the cultural and spiritual heart of our Kingdom. Fes is home to the world's first university.

The Medina of Fes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the largest pedestrian-only area in the world,  was established in the 9th century, and as you enter the city from the outside, you'll first pass through the current New City.

DAY 4: FES, THE ROMAN RUINS AT VOLUBILIS & MEDIEVAL MEKNES

Visualize standing where the Roman Empire once stood...

Storks built their nests atop the lofty, bare pillars of Volubilis. The antique mosaics have faded with age, but their original splendor is still apparent in their intricate coloration and design. The antique olive oil press will be demonstrated, and your guide will explain the significance of the various structures that once stood on this site, which dates back two thousand years.

You'll also have a chance to see Moulay Idris, one of Morocco's holiest cities. This town, which has the name of the Muslim saint who founded Fes, is picturesque, with its white buildings and distinctive green roofs.

The lunch halt will be in Meknes, another royal city. You'll take a tour bus across the city and see the impressive Bab Mansour, erected in the name of Sultan Moulay Ismail. The zellij tiles and intricate etching on this gate are stunning. The old granaries and the Royal Stables of Moulay Ismail will also be visited.

volubilis.jpeg

DAY 5: HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS & MARRAKECH MEDINA

The drive from Fes to Marrakech today will be the longest of the trip, but it will also be one of th e most scenic. The route takes you up into the Middle Atlas Mountains and then winds along the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Enjoy the beautiful countryside; getting out of town for a while will do you good. Find out from your driver what sights in Marrakech they think you shouldn't miss.

Taking a horse-drawn carriage ride is a delightful way to see the sights. Just close your eyes and picture the clip clop of the horse's hooves on the road as the breeze and the sights of Marrakech pass you by. The Jma El Fnaa, the central plaza of Marrakech, will be right there for you to pull up to. Going in the evening will allow you to witness it at its liveliest.

There are food stands everywhere with sellers shouting out their wares. If you give in to the temptation, you can fill your tummy with fresh drinks, dried fruit, heated meals, and more. If you're feeling brave, snap a photo of yourself with the snake you got from the snake charmer. Your companions are really curious to see the proof.

morocco tour 9 days

DAY 6: BAHIA PALACE & MAGICAL MARRAKECH

Today, you'll learn why so many people from all over the world flock to Marrakech. The more people who learn about it, the more popular it becomes, and anybody who goes there leaves comprehending the craze.

The Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakech's largest, and your guide will take you there. Raise your head and look up to see how high it goes...

Try to picture yourself strolling through the souks and  medina bazaar. Lantern-lit stands attract the most attention because of the glittering shards of color they cast. As you wander the stalls, trying to decide which one to visit, you'll be surrounded by silver, brass, spices, and soft materials.

In the Bahia palace, your guide will show you where Grand Vizier Si Moussa and his son, Bou Ahmed, once lived. You'll learn why the word means "brilliance" as you wander the gardens and elegant parlors. Another fantastic attraction in Marrakech is the Saadian Tombs. Many members of the royal Saadian dynasty are interred in these graves, which have lain undiscovered for decades.

The tombs here are absolutely stunning, with intricate zellij patterns and ornate artwork covering every available surface.

DAY 7: MESMERISING MARRAKECH & CHARMING CASABLANCA

You woke up to your last full day in Morocco, but luckily it's a day off, so you can get in any last-minute visits or purchases you've been meaning to make. Grab a lantern for your home, enjoy sweet, fresh-squeezed Moroccan orange juice, or circle back to the medina to check if the shopkeeper decided to budge on their price.

At your convenience, your driver will take you back to Casablanca, where your amazing journey began a week ago.

DAY 8: CASABLANCA FAREWELL

You may be taken aback as you make your way to the airport to depart Morocco and the new friends you've made here.

Have a safe travel home and know that you are always welcome back to the land that has won your heart.

The Perfect Morocco Itinerary for 9 Days

morocco tour 9 days

Before we headed to Morocco, we weren’t quite sure what we actually wanna see. Neither did we know what’s the best way to get around in the country.

After doing some research we decided to rent a car and go on a road trip there. Unfortunately, we had only 9 days which was definitely not enough to explore all of the country’s beauty.

Still, I can say that we saw and experienced a lot thanks to a perfectly planned Morocco itinerary for 9 days!

(This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a certain percentage of a sale if you purchase after clicking.)

At the beginning of our planning, we didn’t really know where to begin. There’s no doubt that Morocco has way too many interesting places to discover.

I bet no matter how much time you spend there, you’ll never see everything of its beauty!

So no wonder it took us ages until we finally finished our Morocco itinerary for 9 days. Since we had only a little time, it wasn’t possible to visit all the places we actually wanted to and it was quite difficult to decide which ones we should skip.

We landed in Marrakech and also departed from there so the city is the start- and endpoint of the itinerary. You can easily start from any other place or choose to do it the other way around.

Oh and btw, if you don’t really dare to drive on your own, you can organize a rental car with a driver from one of the many tour companies.

Among the best and most popular ones is Desert Discovery Tours , a licensed company that offers private drivers and other organized tours from different Moroccan cities.

They even offer customizable tours up to 14 days based on your interests so you can include all the places mentioned in this post!

Above you can see the exact route we took.

Don’t worry, I’m going to tell you the distance between those stops and how long you need to drive from one point to another. Moreover, I also want to share what you should see/do at those places and where we decided to stay .

So let’s start! 🙂

1. Day: Marrakech

Distance: 0 km Travel Time: 0 hrs Accommodation: Riad & Spa Ksar Saad

As already mentioned, our flight landed at the airport in Marrakech Menara. So on the first day, we didn’t travel anywhere but stayed in the city .

Thanks to our early arrival – our flight landed at 9:00 am that day – we still had quite some time to explore the city.

A Day in Marrakech

Marrakech is probably THE absolute must-go place and one day there was way too short.

We knew we wouldn’t be able to see all of its attractions so we didn’t stress and decided spontaneously about the things we wanted to see.

Road trip itinerary for Morocco

Even with that little amount of time, we managed to see quite a lot in my opinion – without rushing through the city.

We visited Bahia Palace, got lost in the souks, admired Koutoubia Mosque, and experienced the famous market square Jemaa El-Fnaa during day and night.

There I bought some nice Moroccan souvenirs such as argan oil and a colorful lantern for my mum.

Visiting the Jardin Majorelle would have been awesome too but we ran out of time, unfortunately.

Bahia Palace Marrakech

2. Day: Marrakech – Ouzoud Waterfalls – Casablanca

Marrakech – Ouzoud Falls Distance: ~ 160 km Travel Time: ~ 2.45 hrs

Ouzoud Falls – Casablanca Distance: ~ 250 km Travel Time: ~ 3.45 hrs Accommodation: Casablanca Suites & Spa

Our road trip and thus real adventure started on the second day when we left Marrakech and made our way to Ouzoud Falls.

Initially, Ouzoud Falls wasn’t part of our itinerary. Instead, we wanted to visit Essaouira but then decided spontaneously to skip the coast city and head to the waterfalls.

After less than three hours of driving, we arrived at the small village close to the waterfalls.

We parked our car and after a friendly Moroccan guy approached us, we decided to take a tour with him. We’d read that it’s better to take a tour anyway so we were lucky he offered us one for a very good price.

Ouzoud Falls in Morocco

Hiking Down The Waterfalls

Frankly, I didn’t expect it to be such a rough and long climb down to the falls but trust me, it was. Needless to say, we both weren’t dressed properly but we made it down there somehow! 😀

Our tour guide led us through bushes and fig trees – we ate some of course – passing some really awesome viewpoints of the falls.

At one point we stayed a bit longer and treated ourselves to freshly pressed orange juice for only €1!

After around 1 – 1.5 hours we finally arrived at the foot of the majestic waterfalls. It was possible to swim or take a boat tour but we did neither of those activities but simply relaxed and enjoyed the place.

We imagined it to be less touristy but it was packed with people!

Nevertheless, it was absolutely impressive seeing that natural wonder from close up.

Road trip itinerary for Morocco

After we spent around 4 hours at the waterfalls , we continued our road trip to Casablanca. Due to our late arrival, we didn’t do much except for having dinner.

Plus we planned what places we wanted to explore on the next day in Casablanca which was the next stop on our Morocco itinerary for 9 days!

TIP: Don’t forget to rent a car beforehand to save time at the destination. We used rentalcars.com to rent our car and it was super easy and fast!

3. Day: Casablanca – Chefchaouen

Distance: ~ 340 km Travel Time: ~ 4.45 hrs Accommodation: Dar Meziana

Admittedly, I wasn’t a real fan of Casablanca as it was a weird mix of modern and old so personally, I think one day in Casablanca is enough.

However, before we left for Chefchaouen, we visited the place that made it worth going to that city: Hassan II Mosque – one of the most beautiful landmarks in Africa!

Hassan II Mosque Casablanca

A Visit to Africa’s Largest Mosque

Africa’s second-largest mosque lures with its turquoise ornaments, grand entrance doors, and lovely fountains on every side. Not only from the outside it’s an absolute stunner but inside it’s even more breathtaking!

Luckily, there was an English-speaking guide inside who told us some interesting facts about the mosque. For example, did you know its minaret is the largest one in the entire world?

Road Trip Itinerary for Morocco

After the tour, we still had some time left before we made our way to Chefchaouen, the next point on my Morocco itinerary for 9 days.

Thus we went to Mausoleum Sidi Abderrahmane which is located off the coast of the city on a rocky outcrop of land.

Oddly enough, the tombs of this mausoleum are basically the white domes you can see on the island.

It’s also an informal pilgrimage destination for Moroccan people because they believe that Saint Abderrahmane has miraculous healing powers and helps them to ease suffering.

Mausoleum Sidi Abderrahmane

Although it was very interesting to see, you can easily skip this place if you’re short on time. If you’re going to Casablanca, just make sure to visit the mosque as it’s simply out of this world!

Apart from that, there wasn’t anything else worth seeing so we headed back to our car and started the long journey to the blue pearl!

Unfortunately, we had some issues with our car so we had to exchange it and lost quite a big amount of time.

Therefore it was already pretty late when we arrived in Chefchaouen and so we didn’t have the opportunity to explore it on that day already.

Chefchaouen

4. Day: Chefchaouen

Distance: 0 km Travel Time: 0 hrs Accomodation: Dar Meziana

I can’t believe I’m saying this but we almost didn’t plan to visit Chefchaouen .

From all the places on our road trip itinerary for Morocco, this city was by far the one with the biggest detour. It would have been much easier to skip Chefchaouen and head to Fes directly from Casablanca.

Instead, we decided to spend more time in the blue pearl and less in the other two cities.

Morocco itinerary for 9 days

I’m Blue da ba dee da ba daa …

I can honestly say I’M SO GLAD WE DID!

Chefchaouen was one of my absolute favorite places in Morocco and it was definitely worth the long drive to the north. We spent the entire 4th day walking around the city and it felt so good having a day without driving.

Chefchaouen in Morocco

There’s not really one special “must-see” attraction as the city itself is one. We didn’t have any specific place in mind but simply followed the narrow streets where they led us .

In my opinion, it’s the best way to make sure you don’t miss any of the city’s cute hidden corners.

In the evening we climbed up to the Spanish Mosque which is a mosque built in the 1920s and located on a small hill overlooking Chefchaouen.

Even though we took a completely wrong route we reached the top of the hill right in time for sunset.

Sitting there and watching the sun turn red above the blue pearl was one of the most magical moments in my entire life! In my opinion, it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Chefchaouen .

View from the Spanish Mosque in Chefchaouen

5. Day: Chefchaouen – Fes

Distance: ~ 210 km Travel Time: ~ 3.30 hrs Accommodation: Riad Zamane & Spa

On day 5 we left Chefchaouen and made our way to the second largest city with the oldest medina in Morocco : Fes.

Not only is it the oldest medina but with its maze of alleys, it’s probably also the easiest one to get lost in. Therefore I recommend you to book a guided tour through the medina or ask a local to show you around.

Of course, the latter expect you to pay them but trust me, it’s better than having no clue where you actually are! 😀

Morocco itinerary for 9 days

One of my Least Favourite Places in Morocco:

Have you really been to Fes without seeing one of the three tanneries?

Even though I felt really uncomfortable going there (for ethical reasons) – we decided to not skip that visit. We went to Chouara Tannery – the largest one of those three and also one of the oldest tanneries in the world.

Because of all the research and articles I’d read before, I expected the smell to be unbearable since they use cow urine and pigeon feces to dye the leather.

However, the smell wasn’t as bad as I imagined it to be – probably because we went there after the actual opening hours and people weren’t working.

Road trip itinerary for Morocco

Shortly after, we went to a local shop and learned everything about the process of making Argan oil. It was really interesting and I bought a perfume made with the simplest ingredients: Argan oil & Jasmine.

For dinner, we decided to head to a place that we got recommended by a fellow travel blogger. And trust me, it was truly the coolest dinner spot in Fes for sure!

Last but not least, we went to see Bab Bou Jeloud or better known as The Blue Gate.

It was already dark when we arrived there and while we were standing in front of it, completely over the moon about its mesmerizing look, our 5th day in Morocco came to an end.

6. Day: Fes – Merzouga (Desert)

Distance: ~ 460 km Travel Time: ~ 7 hrs Accommodation: Tiziri Camp

Fes is the second city I wish we would’ve had more time there but I guess that only means I need to come back! 😉

Our next stop on our Morocco itinerary for 9 days was the desert – the place I was absolutely dying to go!

It’s been on my bucket list for such a long time thus my excitement that day was simply indescribable. Honestly, I felt like a child at Christmas!

From Mountainscape to The Desert

Unfortunately, I had to be really patient because the way from Fes to Merzouga took us more than seven hours .

Luckily, the drive wasn’t boring at all thanks to Morocco’s stunning landscape. We saw tons of breathtaking viewpoints and other attractions on the way.

For example, around 1.30 hrs after we left Fes, we arrived at the cedar forests of Azrou.

This place is well-known for its wild monkeys and fortunately, there were quite a few so we stopped the car and watched them playing in the trees.

Wild monkeys in Azrou

Some other animals we encountered on our journey were flocks of sheep, goats, and donkeys that belonged to nomads living there.

Road trip itinerary for Morocco

Attention: Morocco landscape photo spam is coming!

Morocco road trip itinerary

The closer we came to the desert, the more different the landscape became. It changed from a rocky mountainscape to a lowland with an endless-seeming road leading into the distance.

Slowly but steady palm trees started to appear on both sides of the road and as soon we passed Erfoud we could spot the Sahara dunes in the distance!

Morocco road

Although we spent all day in the car, the journey from Fes to Merzouga didn’t feel like an eternity. Still, we were more than relieved when we finally arrived at our final destination of the day: Merzouga!

7. Day: Desert Camp (Merzouga)

Distance: 0 km Travel Time: 0 hrs Accommodation: Tiziri Camp

Before we started planning our Morocco itinerary for 9 days we knew one thing for sure: We wanted to stay in a desert camp, frolic in the dunes and sleep under the stars of the Sahara!

So that’s what we did when we spent two nights at Tiziri Camp in the middle of the African desert.

Check out: – Staying at Tiziri Camp – a Luxury Eco Camp in Morocco

Sahara desert Morocco road trip itinerary

8. Day: Merzouga – Tinghir

Distance: ~ 200 km Travel Time: ~ 2.45 hrs Accommodation: Kasbah Taborihte

After an unforgettable experience in the desert, our road trip continued the next day.

Luckily, the distance from the desert to Tinghir – the next stop on my Morocco itinerary for 9 days – wasn’t that long. Yet during our short time on the road, we saw some pretty awesome things again.

Like …

Camels in Morocco

… camels! They were casually sitting next to the road and darted curious looks at us while we were watching them.

Lunch & Mint Tea With a Local Family

After we arrived in Tinghir the coolest thing ever happened: While we were taking photos of a camel sign, a local family saw us and invited us to have lunch and tea with them!

Since it was a special public holiday, it was a tradition to celebrate with the entire family and all of them heartily welcomed us too!

We ate some very delicious couscous and drank the typical Moroccan mint tea. Afterward, they dressed us like Berbers, showed us around and told us a bit about their life.

We had such a good time and they probably saved our life because due to the public holiday, almost everything was closed so we worried about finding food! 😀

Berber in Tinghir

So if you find that Camel sign in Tinghir, stop and say hello to the family right next to it!

We spent quite a few hours at their place before we continued the way to our hotel.

Road trip itinerary for Morocco

Tinghir itself is not that spectacular but due to its convenient location, it’s perfect for a stopover.

Furthermore, the town is the entrance to the Todra Gorge which is a really beautiful limestone canyon and a fascinating natural wonder!

We wanted to explore the gorge a bit more, but after we checked in at our hotel, the weather turned really bad and it started to rain heavily.

Thus we were kind of stuck and decided to relax at the hotel which, btw, is probably the coolest hotel in Tinghir ! It was already late anyway and we still needed to plan for the next day.

On the way from Tinghir to Marrakech are some worth-seeing stops too and we wanted to fit in as much as possible because it was our last day!

Todra Valley Morocco Itinerary for 9 days

9. Day: Tinghir – Dades Gorge – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

Distance: ~ 360 km Travel Time: ~ 6 hrs Accommodation: Riad Melhoun & Spa

We got up quite early on our last day because we had a long way to go back to Marrakech and there were still some places we needed to check out!

Our first stop was Dades Gorge which was actually not exactly on our way. It was only a few kilometers in another direction tho and it was really worth the slight detour!

Road to the Dades Gorge

The entire journey from Tinghir to the gorge was an adventure for itself thanks to the scenic road that led through steep and rugged rocks.

You’ve probably seen some pictures of the gorge already because there’s that one very famous winding road :

Winding road of Dades Gorge

As awesome as it looks, as difficult it was to actually drive on it!

I mean it’s no secret that you need to be a very good driver in Morocco anyway. But that’s another topic I’ll write a blog post about. 😀

At the end of the curvy road and situated on a hill is the lovely café-restaurant Timzillite . There you can grab a coffee and enjoy the nice view of Dades Gorge!

Road Trip itinerary for Morocco

It’s possible to follow the road deeper into the canyon, however, we decided to take the way back as we wanted to have enough time at our next stop: Ait Ben Haddou.

The “Slaving City” in Game of Thrones

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones (I AM) you NEED to go to Ait Ben Haddou! The historical city was featured in the third season of the series when Daenerys Targaryen battled with the Second Sons to liberate slaves.

Even if you’re not a fan of GoT, maybe you’ve seen The Mummy or Gladiator ?

They used Ait Ben Haddou as a filming location for both of them as well. Moreover, the city is a World Heritage Site such as many other locations in Morocco.

Ait Ben Haddou

We spent around two hours exploring the medieval town with all its tiny and narrow streets before we continued our journey back to Marrakech, starting and ending point on our road trip itinerary for Morocco.

Narrow streets in Ait Ben Haddou

Bumpy Roads of Tizi n’Tichka

Although we had only 180 kilometers left until we reached Marrakech, it took us more than three hours to get there!

The reason why it took so long was the super bumpy and mostly unpathed road of the mountain pass Tizi n’Tichka.

It was really horrible driving there and we almost freaked out because of all the potholes and steep curves. Well, at least the scenery was absolutely stunning!

Road trip itinerary for Morocco

It was super late when we finally reached Marrakech. We went to Jema el-Fnaa to have dinner for the last time.

After some yummy pizza we headed back to Riad Melhoun – the place we chose for our last night and one of the best riads in Marrakech in my opinion.

There we went to bed tired and exhausted yet incredibly sad we had to leave Morocco on the next day.

Looking back, I can honestly say that this road trip was the most adventurous one so far!

Yes, we spent more than 30 hours in the car. Yes, we got up super early almost every day and it was kind of tough but it was so worth it!

Of course, I wish we would’ve had more time in some places but 9 days simply weren’t enough for that.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure I’ll make it to Morocco again sometime and then I’ll explore all the places I haven’t seen during that road trip! 🙂

Hopefully, you find this blog post about my Morocco itinerary for 9 days helpful!

This is seriously the PERFECT road trip itinerary for those truly looking to experience Morocco. I just did the south of Morocco back in April, but I want to go back and see the north. I’ll admit I was a bit heartbroken when I didn’t see Chefchaouen.

You really need to go back and see Chefchaouen, it was my favourite place ?

This seems like the perfect itinerary! I am so excited to visit Morocco soon & this was so so useful!

So happy you like it Emma ☺️

Thee are excellent tips! I usually follow them when I travel. I am loving the lazy 4×4 drivers!

What a great itinerary. I’d love to do a road trip in Morocco.

Thanks, it was great! 🙂

This is such a helpful post! I never knew there are so many fun things to do in Morroco!

Oh thank you so much Donna! Glad you found it helpful 🙂

You’ve covered so much of Morocco in 9 days! I have gone 3 times and it’s still not enough time to see it all but I love the country and will most likely be back again in the future!

Yeah we saw quite a lot that’s true ☺️ I love it too & I’m certain I’ll go there again as well because I haven’t seen enough of Marrakech!

I want to go to Morocco so badly. My friends went last year and also did a dessert trip and the photos just looked incredible. You did a lot of driving but it seems like it was worth it

Morocco is a fascinating country and I recommend everyone to go there! 🙂

Your itinerary is perfect for a long vacation in Morocco! Loved it. Thanks for sharing with us, it will be easier for us now to plan

Thank you so much Polly! One of my favourite road trips so far ?

Thank you for such a great post! Your pictures are absolutely stunning. Ouzoud Falls was one of my favourite experiences I had when I was in Morocco a few years back, but I was also surprised at how busy it was. 100% worth the trip though! I didn’t make it to Chefchaouen though sadly. I wanted to, but my travel buddy didn’t. It is definitely on my to-visit list next time I’m in Morocco!

Thanks Erica, super happy you like it ☺️ Chefchaouen was one of my favourite cities and I can recommend everyone to go there. Hopefully you’ll make it next time ?

Yeah we really did! It was a bit hectic but super adventurous and fun 🙂

This is a great guide Lina, thanks for sharing so much details. I have been in Morocco but I haven’t had to chance to do a road trip, and this is very useful for when I get back again, because next time I will want to drive around and explore.

I can highly recommend doing a road trip! The country is just so diverse 🙂

Beautiful photos! Those waterfalls look amazing, we’d love to do a road trip just like this one day!

I’ve always wanted to go to Morocco. It looks so beautiful and your photos absolutely do it justice!

I was really surprised and loved it a lot!

I didn’t think you could cover that much in 9 days in Morocco! The Dades Gorges looks amazing, look like you had an amazing time, makes me want to go now!

Haha we didn’t either! It was a bit hectic but definitely adventurous and we saw and experienced a lot 😀

What a great trip! This itinerary hits all the best spots. Hopefully I’ll be able to go sooner rather than later!

We really saw a lot in a short time! And I hope you can go there too soon 🙂

Morocco has been at the top of my bucket list for a while now! Your photos are beautiful!

Thanks Disha! I hope you can visit this amazing country soon 🙂

What a complete itinerary! I was able to visit only Marrakech but would have loved to experience some other cities. You photos are beautiful!

Thank you Ashley! I wish we had more time in Marrakech. I’m hoping to go back soon 🙂

Woww what an amazing adventure and so much to do on a road trip around Morocco! Did you face any problems or harassment as a female? I’d love to go I have quite neglected Africa 🙁

Yeah it was really an adventure! No not really harrassment but we both got a lot of attention, especially while driving through the smaller villages where normally no tourists ever go. The people were really nice and friendly! Just be careful because they want to have money for everything – even for things like only pointing in the direction of a place. 😀

I never considered going to Morroco but after reading your post, I may change my mind! This is really cool!!! Oh and on another note: loved your outfits, by the way 😉

Thanks for sharing such a great post! xo, B.

I can highly recommend visiting it! It’s an interesting and fascinating country to see 🙂 Thanks a lot Barbara! I bought most of them before my trip to Morocco because I didn’t have long dresses. 😀

I am DYING to go to Morocco! So much to see do, and (most importantly) eat there!! It’s definitely on our bucket list and you put together a fantastic way to experience the country. Loved your photos and thanks for sharing!

Thanks Arielle 🙂 Morocco definitely is worth a visit and I hope you can go there soon!

Morocco has soo much beauty both in it’s history as well as the culture. We have been dreaming about galavanting around the markets and buying some stunning Moroccan lamps for ages. This was one of our scheduled trips this year (dang covid) but we will keep your amazing itinerary and put it to good use when we can safely get out and travel again 🙂

Oh no I’m so sorry you couldn’t go there 🙁 Hopefully you’ll be able soon!

Such a great post! Love that you included the map!

Thanks a lot! 🙂

I like on your itinerary that you took the 2 nights in desert. Many people do the long driving just to come for the night and leave next day in the morning. They are missing so much! After all the long driving through the South is so much recommend it to spend at least 2 nights here. There is many things to do in desert as wild cooking, visiting Nomads, looking for fossils, walking, sliding down the dunes, quad biking… Or just taking it easy and enjoy the magical landscape. Especially if one travels during the spring and fall.

Oh yes! I totally agree that one needs to spend at least two nights there 🙂

Oh, I would like to visit Morocco! It’s an amazing country, I love your itinerary.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops, and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados, or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While traveling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe, and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a  3 day Sahara Mini Adventure  to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our  11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip,  or make it a quick journey on our  Five Days in Morocco tour.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a  7 day Mount Toubkal Trek  or a  Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek  for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our  8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our  18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .

13. Tangier

The coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Explore the Gateway to Africa on our  9 day North Morocco Adventure.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds, and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewelry

Jewelry fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewelry. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces, and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts, and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops, and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

Is it safe to travel to Morocco?

Morocco is an extremely safe country to travel to as long as you abide by the local culture and customs.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travelers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

How will I get around Morocco?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Morocco, you may find yourself traveling by:

Board an iconic ‘ship of the desert’ and amble off across desert sands for a quintessential Sahara experience.

Where will I stay in Morocco?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Morocco you may find yourself staying in a:

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad. The riad is the Moroccan traditional house, normally with two or more stories around an Andalusian-style courtyard that contained a fountain. Riads were the stately city homes of the wealthiest citizens such as merchants and courtiers.

Does my trip to Morocco support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Morocco directly support our foundation partners, Education For All and High Atlas Foundation. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Education For All

Education for All allows girls in remote areas of Morocco to access education and prepare for successful careers. Donations from our trips help girls in the High Atlas Mountains through secondary school, bringing a generation of women out of the cycle of illiteracy, poverty and early marriage.

Find out more or make a donation.

High Atlas Foundation

The High Atlas Foundation helps communities in Morocco implement human development initiatives such as organic agriculture, women's empowerment, youth development, education and health initiatives. Donations from our trips directly support their sustainable agriculture programs, which fund fruit tree and wild medicinal plant nurseries, irrigation infrastructure, organic certification, technical skills-building, carbon sequestration, and commercialization.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What is it like traveling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

We start the day with a slow walk along Chefchaouen’s beautiful blue streets. We keep going to the Kasbah Museum, which is the city’s first building and tells us about its past. After a trip to the Ras El Ma waterfalls, we’ll go to the lively Wetat Lhmam square for tea and some local entertainment. We left for Fes in the afternoon, and you’ll spend the night in a wonderful traditional Riad hotel. A day of exciting trips is coming up!

Day 4: Fes city tour

Today, our trip takes us to Fes, which was Morocco’s first capital and a royal city. It is full of history and culture. We are about to have a lot of amazing adventures. We start the day by going to Bab Boujloud, a beautiful gate built in the 1100s that leads to Fes El Bali , the old part of the city. Then we’ll take our time walking through its small streets and see the Bou Inania and Attarine Madrassas, which are both beautiful examples of Moroccan architecture . Our next stop is Al-Karaouiyne, which is the oldest university in the world. After that, we’ll go to the famous Chouara Tannery, which is one of Fes’s three historical tanneries.

As we continue our trip, we will see the King’s palace, which is famous for its seven beautiful golden gates, and climb to the top of the Borj Nord to get a great view of the city’s beautiful scenery. We’re going to take a slow walk in the peaceful Garden of Sbil. To relax, you can choose between a traditional hot bath (Hamam) or a relaxing massage in the late afternoon. Tomorrow is a day full of exploring and taking it easy in Fes.

Day 5: Fes to Merzouga, the Sahara desert

We’re still on our way from Fes to Merzouga in the stunning Sahara Desert. Along the way, there’s a lot to see. We’ll start our trip by going to Ifrane, which is sometimes called the “Little Switzerland of Morocco.” We will take a moment to enjoy the Atlas Lion figure, which was made by a German prisoner as a tribute to the endangered Atlas lion that used to live in the nearby forest. Next, we’ll go to Azrou and explore the Cedar Forest. During a break, we’ll have the chance to see Barbary Macaque monkeys, which are also called magots or apes.

Midelt is the next town on our way. This town is often called the “ City of Apples .” Depending on the time, we might stop for a tasty lunch. We will keep going and go through the Talghomt mountain pass on our way to the Errachidia Dam, which is an important water source for the Sahara area. We’ll also stop for a short time at a lookout point with a wide view of the Ziz Valley, which is famous for having lots of date palm trees. This valley is one of Morocco’s main sources of juicy date fruits, which are marked with an international fair every October in Erfoud.

As we drive through Arfoud, you can try some Magdol dates, and if you’re interested in the mineral fossils in the area, we can plan a stop at one of the museums. Our trip ends in Merzouga, where we’ll make sure you’re comfortable at one of the town’s nice hotels.

Day 6: Merzouga discovery tour

Start a 9-day tour in Morocco from Tangier to Marrakech  that includes a visit to the beautiful Merzouga desert. The highlight of our best-guided tours in Morocco. Take a look at what’s in store for you on this interesting journey:

Auto Museum Delight: Start your day by going to the Morocco National 4X4 Auto Museum, which has an amazing collection of cars that was donated by a fan from Qatar. Spend some time in the fascinating world of old cars, which is sure to amaze you.

Gnaoua Groove: Keep going to Khamlia, a cute town that is about 6 km from Merzouga. Here, you can relax to the beautiful sounds of Gnaoua music , which is played with skill on traditional drums and castanets. This is a one-of-a-kind cultural experience.

Historical Insights: Look at the ruins of an old mine in Mifis to learn about how salt and kohl were extracted during the French colonial era. This will give you a sense of the area’s history.

Nomadic Connection: Have a one-of-a-kind experience with a Berber family who lives in a traditional tent. This will set the tone for a memorable night under the stars in the desert.

Flamingo Haven: Follow our directions to reach the peaceful Srij Lake, where camels feed and migratory flamingos find safety. This beautiful scenery will set the tone for your trip.

Market Vibrance: If it works with our plans, let’s take a side trip to the busy city of Rissani, which is the center of business in Tafilalet. Enjoy Madfouna , a tasty Berber-Arabic pitta bread, and check out the busy donkey market, which is a hub for business.

Oasis Intrigue: In the afternoon, visit the beautiful Hassi Labied oasis, which is a thriving agricultural hub with a complex tunnel-based irrigation system that gets water from wells.

Camel Carriage: The best part of your day comes when our camel ride pros take you on an amazing trip across the mesmerizing Erg Chebbi dunes. If you get there in time, you can either see a beautiful desert sunset or spend the night at our camp in the dunes.

Our trip to Morocco is a lively mix of finding and cultural experience, so every moment is full of excitement and wonder.

Day 7: Merzouga to Dades Gorges

When you get back from your camel trip, our personal driver will be waiting to meet you. You will have had a wonderful night in our desert huts. You will then continue your trip with a beautiful drive to Boumaln Dades, which will take you through the breathtaking Todgha Gorges. We will also see an old watering system with wells that feeds the cute Fazna island along the way.

When you get to Todgha Gorges, you can go on a guided hour-long walk through this beautiful gorge. The rocks are over 300 meters high, and a river winds through the rock. It’s a truly amazing sight.

After that, we’ll go to the beautiful Dades Gorges and stop at two extraordinary places. The first place we’ll visit is the “Monkey Toes,” a group of mountains that look like the fingers of a huge monkey thanks to wind and rain.

As we continue our trip, we will go along the tricky turns of Tissdrine. This area was once used as the background for a Cadillac ad because of its beautiful views and dangerous turns. You will spend the night in a cozy hotel or a traditional Riad that is tucked away in the beautiful valleys.

Our tour was carefully planned to include both exciting and relaxing activities, so your time in Morocco will be nothing less than amazing.

Day 8: Dades gorges to Marrakech

On our 9-day exciting tour of Morocco, which starts in Tangier and ends in Marrakech , we’ll visit the lively city of Marrakech. We’ll stop at a number of interesting places along the way that are sure to leave a mark.

Our trip starts in Dades, and as we go through the beautiful Rose Valley, we offer an extra stop for people who want to learn more about the area’s famous rose-based goods. From there, we’ll go to Ouarzazate, which is known as the “cinematic city” because it is a center for making movies in Morocco.

In Ouarzazate, our trip takes a movie-themed turn when we visit the Oscar Atlas Studio. There, we’ll learn about the magic that went into making many movies that were made in the beautiful Kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou and Taourirt. Some of these are great movies, like “The Gladiator” and “Lawrence of Arabia.”

Our trip goes into the Atlas Mountains in the late afternoon. At the very top of the mountain, 2260 meters above sea level, we will stop for a break in our trip. Also, for people who want to buy argan oil , we’ll pay a quick visit to an argan oil cooperative.

Finally, our day ends when we get to Marrakech, where we’ll take you right to your chosen accommodation. Marrakech is the most important place on your trip through Morocco, and we can’t wait to show you all of its wonderful sights.

Day 9: Marrakech city tour

Our 9-day tour of Morocco starts in Tangier and ends in Marrakech , which is also known as the “Red City.” As you start your day of exploring, we’ll show you the city’s most famous sights that have been drawing tourists for years.

Our trip starts in the morning when we’ll show you the beautiful Koutoubia Mosque, which is Marrakech’s biggest and most important mosque. Next, we will take you to the Majorelle Garden, a beautiful oasis that has been touched by the art of the famous French artist.

Next on our list are the Palace of Bahia and the Menara Garden, which will give you a look into the city’s rich past. Afterward, we’ll go to the lively Jemaa El Fna Square, which is full of interesting things to do, such as snake charmers and interesting street shows called “Halka.”

Based on the time we have, we might check out more gems, like the King’s Palace. At the end of our day of finding, we’ll take you to your chosen lodging or, if necessary, help you get to the airport.

Our 9-day trip through Morocco is now over. With all of its different experiences, Marrakech is a great place to end a trip through this fascinating country that you will never forget.

The start of our 9 days tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert will be contingent on your arrival and will commence at the airport.

After having breakfast at your riad, you'll embark on a journey from Marrakesh to Ouarzazate via Tizi n Tichka pass, surrounded by the stunning Atlas hills and mountains. Along the way, there will be stops for taking pictures and an off-road detour to the Telouet Kasbah known as Glaoui. You'll also have a chance to wander through the picturesque villages and see the crops on the Atlas hills. The next stop is the Ait ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

After lunch, you'll continue on to Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "Hollywood of Africa", for its stunning geography and history of attracting movie producers. You have the option to visit the film studios, showcasing props from famous movies such as The Mummy, Gladiator, and The Last Temptation of Christ. Lastly, you'll visit the Taourirt Kasbah, belonging to the former governor of Ouarzazate, the Glaoui family, before checking into your riad or hotel.

After breakfast, we'll head to Toudra Gorges via the Skoura palm grove. On the way, we'll pass through the Roses Valley and visit the Dades Valley before continuing to Tinghir, a recently revitalized town at the base of the Anti Atlas Mountains. After lunch, we'll drive to Merzouga, stopping at various towns and villages including Tinejdad, Touroug, and Erfoud. On the approach to Erfoud, you'll see the historic irrigation system known as "Khettarat". We'll then continue to the captivating sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, where we'll switch from our vehicle to camels for a sunset tour of the dunes. After reaching the Berber camp, you'll enjoy dinner and a drum performance before spending the night in a Sahara camp.

After breakfast, we'll depart and make a stop in Rissani to visit the local market, or souk. From there, we'll travel through the expansive Ziz Valley, dotted with millions of palm trees, all the way to Errachidia. Tour program of 9 Days Morocco Tour Itinerary

9 days in morocco , ⇒ day 1: arrival in fez.

Today of your 9 Days Morocco Tour Itinerary, your driver is already waiting in airport for you and will take you to your hotel or riad. Depending on your arrival time, we will bring forward part of tomorrow’s program.

⇒ Day 2: Fes Medina Tour

Today starts with a city tour, your local guide will come to pick you up from your Riad after breakfast. This time you will begin your tour of this city steeped in history, with its huge city walls and its imposing golden gate leading to the royal palace. You will visit the tanneries, the Medersa Al Attarine, the Nejjarine Fountain and probably the oldest university in the world: al-Qarawīyīn. The medina with its narrow streets, spice stalls, Berber carpets, traditional handicrafts and much more is of course also on the program. After lunch at a typical local restaurant, return to your riad for the night.

⇒ Day 3: Fes » Ifrane » C edar Forest » Midelt » Merzouga Sahara Desert [467 km]

Today we leave early. A long road to Merzouga lies ahead of us. On the way we will pass through areas that look more like Europe than the desert country of Morocco due to their lush vegetation. The road leads us further up and through the Moroccan Switzerland. It is green (or white in winter). The houses in adapted alpine style don’t seem to belong here. Even cows are not rare here (but camels are).

The highlight will be the drive through the Ifrane National Park with one of the largest Moroccan cedar forests. If we are lucky, we will meet the famous Barbary macaques that have migrated as far as Gibraltar. Feeding is allowed here, but still caution is advised. We cross the Atlas Mountains again – the Middle Atlas – and stop not only for a snack, but also for short breathers at breathtaking viewpoints. Then we descend again on the other side of the mountains to Erfoud / Merzouga.

In Erfoud we will stop at a manufactory, which is making articles of use and jewelry out of the regional fossil finds. Afterwards we will bring you to your hotel or desert camp directly at the edge of the Sahara. Behind your hotel the first golden sand dunes are already rising. A camel ride to the sunset over the dunes awaits you. Be sure to bring your camera to capture this special moment.

⇒ Day 4: Explore Merzouga area & Visit nomad families [40 Km]

Today, after an extensive Moroccan breakfast with olives, egg dishes in the tajine, fresh still warm bread and delicious desserts, we make a small regional tour. We will drive you straight through the dunes, show you the vast plains famous for their fossil finds, the old eyeliner coal mines. We pay a visit to the Gnawa musicians, where drum rhythms from ancient times are still played, and gain insight into their history.

You will drink tea with real nomads under their traditional tent, made of hand-woven dark wool. And discover the taste of Berber cuisine in a regional restaurant with a Madfouna, the famous Berber pizza, which can also be baked on the fire. The afternoon is yours again. Time to relax or explore the sand dunes on your own. The hotel will be happy to provide you with a surfboard if you want to try your hand at it. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel.

⇒ Day 5: Merzouga – Rissani » Todra Gorges » Dades Valley [255 km]

We will come to pick you up after your leisurely breakfast. We continue towards Bomalen Dades. Now we are already on the road of 1000 Kasbahs – a region that gives an idea of how important and sometimes hotly contested the former trade route along the river oases was. To the right and to the left, our path is lined with half-ruined castles (kasbahs) or old settlements. We encounter bizarre rock formations and wide oasis valleys.

First, we stop at a unique gorge: The Todgha Gorge – at 1550 m.a.s.l. It is located at the foothills of the High Atlas and begins in the Berber town of Tinghir. Impressive, how the rock walls in this narrow gorge with the bubbling, crystal clear water rises far up! We will also pay a short visit to the Dades Gorge before taking you to your accommodation in Bomalen  Dades.

⇒ Day 6: Dades Valley » Ouarzazate » Marrakech [326 km]

Today we drive back to Marrakech. But until then, there is still much to discover. We drive through the Valley of the Roses. Here, the local offerings will make the hearts of herbal enthusiasts beat faster. Rose perfume. Soap. Body cream. Even the precious essential oil can be purchased here at a reasonable price. We continue to Ouarzazate, the Moroccan film metropolis. Fittingly, our next stop is the “Ksar Aît Benhaddou” (Ksar = settlement). This enchanting still original place in old clay construction has already served as a backdrop for many well-known films (most recently “The Game of Thrones”). Now it goes again high up over the Atlas Mountains. At the 2260 m high Tizi-n-Tichka (Tizi (Berber) = pass) we stop and enjoy the breathtaking panorama, before we descend to the plain to Marrakech. Drop off in your Riad for overnight.

⇒ Day 7: Marrakech guided tour

The day begins with your typical Moroccan breakfast. Don’t miss the egg dish with pita bread or the sweet green mint tea. A guided tour of Marrakech is on the agenda for today. Your guide will come to pick you up at the hotel or riad. You will spend about three hours together exploring this wonderful vibrant city. Highlights include the Koutoubia Mosque with its imposing minaret, the Saadian Tombs, which lay hidden for centuries and were only rediscovered in 1917, and the ornate Bahia Palace, one of the most beautiful royal residences from the 19th century.

If you still have time in the afternoon or evening, visit Djemaa-el-Fna Square on your own. Storytellers, musicians, jugglers and lots of market stalls with partly very exotic products are waiting for you. We will take you back to your hotel or riad – if you don’t want to use one of the beautiful horse-drawn carriages.

⇒ Day 8: Marrakech » Essaouira

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we start our Day by driving west to the small port town of Essaouira. On the way we encounter a strange spectacle on the roadside: goats spending their day on argan trees. Of course, we stop! Feeding and photos desired. Arrived in Essaouira, we first visit the old Portuguese fortress, whose imposing cannons point to the sea. The fishing port is a must. Here you can have your own choice of fresh fish, shellfish or seafood prepared on the spot. Would you like to try a freshly caught oyster? Here it is possible. After a walk in the old medina, you return to your riad or hotel.

⇒ Day 9: Essaouira » Marrakech transfer to airport

Today we drive you back to Marrakech depends on your departure time we will transfer you to the airport. End of 9 Days Morocco Tour Itinerary.

Don’t get surprised if we said Yes!! Morocco is totally a safe country and one of the most powerful intelligence apparatuses in the world. The Moroccan government has taken a great and very good step to spread safety such as increasing police presence in tourist areas and this we have remarked in every city in Morocco Also, in every street, you will find at least two policemen. As a result, the country’s security forces have been successful in preventing terrorist attacks. As we are a travel agency, we advise our customers to avoid as much as possible narrow streets during the night, avoid large crowds and keep valuables secure, and not to talk with strangers unless are a seller, guide, driver, or a coffee and restaurant waiter. By following the pieces of advice above you will enjoy your stay in Morocco with peace of mind.

Travel to Morocco as solo!

Traveling to Morocco as a solo. It might be difficult and impossible in your mind because you believe that it’s an African country there is only desert?? and it’s not safe and it is very poor and and… But the fact is completely different. By traveling with us you will get a private car, a private driver’s guide. And a private room or tent in the Sahara Desert. traveling solo can be an exciting and rewarding experience. With our proper planning and awareness, a solo trip with Morocco itinerary is a memorable adventure.

The Overnight in the Camp

According to our guests’ reviews 99% of them they consider the night of the desert camp in Sahara Desert as the highlight of their trip. why?? what makes it special and recommended? Well to answer this question we should talk about the reasons!! First, when our customers arrive Merzouga Desert, they find the camels waiting to carry them across the dunes. Along the way a stop will be made in order to catch a magical sunset over the dunes then later they continue to reach the desert camp where our clients get surprised with the quality of their tent which includes a private bathroom, and a very clean and comfortable bed. Additionally, a delicious dinner with Berber music around the fire under a fully open sky of stars it’s the reason that makes the trip unforgettable. So don’t miss to visit the Sahara Desert during your stay in Morocco.

Alcohol in Morocco!

Morocco considers as an Islamic Country with more than 99 percent of the population is Sunni Muslim. But this doesn’t prevent of producing it and selling it. Here are some Moroccan beers and wines; (Casablanca, Stork, Flag, Heineken). If you are wondering where to buy some alcohol, that easy because many licensed shops are selling it. Such as some Hotels, some Restaurants, Bars, or Carrefour (Supermarket). However, drinking alcohol in the streets for tourists is breaking the law and is completely forbidden and can lead to arrest. So please be careful where you drink you are in a Muslim country.

What to bring with you?

while you are reading this article, so you are interested in travelling to Morocco. But you are lost, and you don’t know what to bring exactly. We will talk only about the important things Firstly, check your passport if its valid to travel or not, don’t forget your credit cards, Cash, Flight info, Phone, Charger, Suitcase, and some Medicine because Morocco don’t have the best Quality ones. However, bring body sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, lip balm are very helpful especially in the desert where the weather is dry. Last thing you shouldn’t forget is a secure Day Bag it’s a great ideal to protect your stuff when you venture into public places like souks (Markets).

Summer and autumn Cloths: Oversize T-shirts, short pants, light trousers, a Dress for women, a bathing suit if you want to swim, we advise comfortable shoes for walking, and a scarf to cover your hair and shoulders but if you don’t have one no worries you can buy one in Morocco. Also, a light jacket is very important because some places are a bit cold even in the summertime. To protect yourself from the strong sun we advise you to bring a Cap. Additionally, don’t forget flip-flops.

winter and spring Cloths: Our suggestions are a warm Jacket for the nights and early mornings, long pants (Jeans), if you have fleece, is perfect idea. Also, T-shirt sometimes during the day it gets sunny and warm. Shoes at least two types, Scarf, skirts, is ok, and tunics.

The Wi-fi & SIM Card in Morocco?

If you are wondering how to get the internet in Morocco and get connected with the world it’s simple and super easy. In the airport where you land, there are shops selling SIM cards you just have to buy one and put some Balance on it, and then you get the internet. I think you still didn’t understand in Morocco each shop ( Grocer ) sells SIM cards and balances. So, you need to buy both. SIM Card costs from 1.5 euro to a maximum of 2.5 euro. For the balance from 0.50 cents to 20 euro, it depends on how much you want:

100 MG  costs 0.50 cents available for one day – 1GB costs 1 Euro available for 3 Days – 2GB costs 2 euro available for 1 week – 5GB costs 5 euro and is available for one Month, and 10GB costs 10 Euro. (The best company is Maroc Telcom ). Additionally, Wi-Fi is available in every coffee, restaurant, Riad, and Hotel.

What languages Moroccans speaks?

Morocco is an Amazigh country (Berber) before being an Arabic country. How? Why? In Morocco More than 60% speak the Amazigh language for example in the north of the country. There are two main languages spoken (Amazigh and Spanish). in the Middle of the country, you will find people speak Arabic and Amazigh, and in the southeast Amazigh is spoken, in the west you find Amazigh and Arabic. So, if we come to account it, we realize that Amazigh people are more spread in Morocco. And to confirm this the king of Morocco Mohamed 6 is of Amazigh origin. Additionally, in Morocco, you will find people speak, other languages like French due to the French colonial. English because a lot they find it easy to learn, Moreover Spanish due to geographical proximity.

Can I use euro or Dollar in Morocco?

Most Merchants in Souks (Market) are accepting £$ and euro instead of the local Currency (MAD). But it’s going to be difficult for you in other places such as Restaurants, and Coffees because the majority of them are accepting only MAD. Our advice is to exchange your money in trusted offices. Like banks or other shops and don’t never give your money to strangers for exchange in the streets.

morocco tour 9 days

I recently went on a 9-day tour of Morocco with Moha from Morocco Itinerary Company. The tour began in Fes and took us to the Merzouga Desert, Bomalen Dades, Marrakech, and Essaouira. The highlight of the trip was definitely the Merzouga Desert. We rode camels through the dunes and watched the sunset over the Sahara. The campsite was comfortable, and the food was delicious. Bomalen Dades was also a beautiful stop on the tour. The scenery was breathtaking, and we enjoyed hiking through the canyons. Marrakech and Essaouira were both vibrant cities with plenty of sights to see and delicious food to try. I highly recommend booking a tour with Moha and Morocco Itinerary Company. The itinerary was well-planned, and we had a fantastic time exploring Morocco.

Protests at Columbia and other schools escalate

Chandelis Duster, Christina Zdanowicz and Lucy Bayly

Follow the latest live coverage about pro-Palestinian protests on US college campuses here.

Rep. Torres: Columbia president “should step aside” if she cannot lead with moral clarity

From CNN's Chandelis Duster

New York Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Democrat, criticized Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, saying she has “chosen to surrender control of Columbia to an antisemitic fringe." Torres also said canceling in-person classes is “an admission of failure” by Shafik.

“If you cannot ensure the safety of your students, then you have no business serving as President of any university, let alone the alma mater of Alexander Hamilton,” Torres said in a statement. “What Columbia University needs is not an appeaser of antisemitism but a leader who will fight with moral clarity against it.”

He continued, “That Columbia University has failed its Jewish students so profoundly is an indelible stain on the soul of the institution. If the President of Columbia University cannot lead with moral clarity, then she should step aside for a true leader who can and will.”

Hakeem Jeffries: Antisemitic rhetoric "unacceptable and deeply disturbing"

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday condemned antisemitism amid ongoing protests at Columbia University and other colleges across the US.

“The antisemitic rhetoric and intimidation deployed by some students and outside protestors on college campuses in New York City and beyond is completely unacceptable and deeply disturbing,” Jeffries, a Democrat who also represents New York, said in a statement. “Every American has the constitutional right to free speech and peaceful assembly in the public square. However, intentionally targeting Jews or any community on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity, acts of harassment and the use of physical violence will never be tolerated.”

He also said the effort to crush antisemitism and hatred “is not a Democratic or Republican issue. It’s an American issue that should bind us all together.”

“We will continue to do everything possible to protect the Jewish community during this very fraught moment, fight the cancer of antisemitism and redouble our efforts to bring communities together,” Jeffries said.

Trump says Columbia University made “grave mistake” making classes hybrid amid tense demonstrations on campus

From CNN's Kate Sullivan

Donald Trump speaks to the media in New York City on April 23.

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday he thought leadership at Columbia University made a “grave mistake” in making all classes at its main campus hybrid until the spring semester ends after days of tense demonstrations on campus.

“What's going on with the colleges where they're closing Columbia now? I mean, it's just crazy. Columbia should gain a little strength, a little courage and keep their school open. It's crazy. Because that means the other side wins,” Trump told reporters at Trump Tower as he took a few questions after greeting former Japanese prime minister Taro Aso.

Trump said, “The people running Columbia have made a grave mistake.”

Barnard students on suspension "no longer have access" to most campus buildings

From CNN's John Towfighi

Barnard President Laura Rosenbury confirmed in a statement yesterday that students on interim suspension "no longer have access to most Barnard buildings."

She said Dean Leslie Grinage is "helping students find alternative housing arrangements when needed."

The statement also said Barnard will consider lifting suspensions for students who have an otherwise clean record and commit to a probationary period.

A Barnard student alleged on X that she was suspended and evicted from housing.

Correction: This post has been updated to correct President Rosenbury's first name. It is Laura.

House Speaker Johnson to visit Columbia University Wednesday

From CNN's Melanie Zanona

House Speaker Mike Johnson speaks to the press at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on April 20.

House Speaker Mike Johnson will head to Columbia University Wednesday to visit with Jewish students and deliver remarks and hold a press conference “regarding the troubling rise of virulent antisemitism on America’s college campuses,” according to his office.

This comes as pro-Palestinian protests have rocked major American universities, including Columbia. After days of tense demonstrations, Columbia University announced it is  moving to mostly hybrid classes  on its main campus until the end of the semester, April 29.

New York House Republicans have called on Columbia president Minouche Shafik to resign immediately for failing to crack down on the protests.

Students, faculty and staff at University of New Mexico protest in support of Gaza

From CNN's Taylor Romine

Students, faculty and staff at the University of New Mexico started protesting Monday in support of Gaza and have done so peacefully, the university said in a statement Tuesday.

On Tuesday, "members of our UNM community assembled at the UNM Duck Pond in peaceful protest," the statement said. Some people brought tents and sleeping bags, which is in violation of school policy, and campus police told them citations or arrests would occur if not removed, they said.

"Police monitored the situation throughout the evening, without incident, and around midnight advised those who were remaining that their tents needed to be taken down or they would be cited," the statement said. "The tents were eventually taken down, with some people remaining at the duck pond."

As of Tuesday, there are about a dozen people at the duck pond with banners and chairs, but no tents, the statement said, and the university continues to monitor the situation.

"The University is grateful to our entire community for modeling how protests can occur in a way that both upholds freedom of expression and ensures a safe and productive campus environment for everyone," the statement said.

Students at Columbia University encampment say they plan to occupy until demands are met

From CNN's Omar Jimenez and Taylor Romine

Columbia University students participate in an ongoing encampment on their campus in New York City, on April 23.

Students occupying the West Lawn at Columbia University said Tuesday they are planning on staying there until the university meets their demands of divestment.

They are asking for a “complete divestment” from anything related to Israel, financial transparency into the university’s investments and amnesty from any disciplinary measures for students participating in the protests.

“This is what we are here for – calling for an end to genocide and for Columbia to financially divest from the violent Zionist settler entity,” a student who identified themself as W told CNN.

“We are putting our principles into action, and we plan to continue to do so by being here every day until Columbia divests."

The group is in negotiations with the university through a legal negotiator, said student organizer Khymani James, who declined to share details of the negotiations.

When asked about the encampment making Jewish students feel unsafe on campus, W said protesters try their best “to make sure everyone feels safe in the encampment," and their community guidelines “preach and hope for peace continuously.”

Columbia University officials warn ongoing encampment is in violation of university rules

From CNN's Sara Smart

The encampment at Columbia University is seen on Tuesday in New York.

Columbia University officials warned Tuesday that the ongoing encampment is in violation of university rules — but school leaders have not given specifics on disciplinary actions.

“The safety of our community is our number one priority,” university spokesperson Ben Chang said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “That includes the safety of the encampment that continues to grow. We are watching this closely.”

University officials met with student organizers until 2 am ET Tuesday to discuss the situation, Chang said. “Columbia students have the right to protest but they are not allowed to disrupt campus life or harass and intimidate fellow students and members of our community," he added.

Chang said acts of vandalism, reports of harassment and discrimination have all been reported during the ongoing protest.

Officials will not release the specifics of student suspensions as “disciplinary actions continue” on campus.
