3-Day Everglades Kayak Tour

Beginner & Family Friendly

Easy Active Rating

Experience the REAL Everglades

On the water

Fully experience the REAL Everglades on this “easy active” tour that is perfect for beginning kayakers and families with children. We will guide you through the maze of 10,000 Islands, take you out into the open Gulf of Mexico, find ancient middens to explore and lead you to hidden mangrove tunnels. You will spot shy manatee in their natural environment, paddle in the middle of frolicking dolphins and watch pelicans dive for their dinner at sunset.

Why Choose This Tour:

The “Real” Everglades - Wander off the beaten path and fully experience the remote Everglades backcountry.

Up Close and Personal Wildlife - Kayak quietly and unobtrusively in the middle of feeding dolphins, float by gentle manatees, watch giant sea turtles swim by, and observe countless species of fish and bird.

Guide Services - Don´t risk getting lost in a foreign landscape! Our certified Florida Master Naturalist will take you to lesser-known beauty and share fascinating natural history (if you wish) from the area.

Backcountry Permit - There is no need to worry about obtaining camping permits. We´ll spend the nights soaking up the sunset and stargazing on beautiful sandy beaches - just let us handle the details!

All Inclusive - Our tours are fully outfitted and guided. All kayak equipment, camping gear and food is included at no additional cost. Don’t waste your valuable vacation hauling tons of gear to Florida - we´ve got you covered.

Safety - The internet is full of stories about dangerous gators and venomous snakes lurking in the Everglades. We have never had a guest threatened by any wildlife. Please don’t let exaggerated fears or uninformed opinions stop you from coming!

“Easy Active” Rating - This is our easiest tour and is suitable for beginning kayakers and families with children. No previous kayaking or camping experience is required. We paddle a maximum of six miles over about three hours each day.

Detailed Itinerary

We´ll begin the day at the Everglades visitor center, where a brief orientation of safety procedures and an outline of the day´s itinerary prepares us for the adventure ahead. Once we are all up to date, it’s time to set off into the expansive wilderness of the everglades. As we weave our way through a network of mangroves out to the Gulf of Mexico, we´ll encounter many birds, observe leaping fish, maybe paddle along side a curious dolphin and possibly catch sight of a silent manatee coming up for a breath. A delicious freshly-prepared lunch at midday is sure to revive you before we reach the open water of the Gulf of Mexico and kayak to our white sandy beach campsite . Here, we can enjoy a delicious dinner of appetizer, local seafood, fresh salad and dessert while observing the sunset paint the sky in shades of burnt orange, dusty pink and lilac. At night, take in the stars against the clearest unpolluted sky and enjoy a well-deserved rest in your two-person tent (provided).

Paddling distance: 6 miles. Lunch and dinner included.

Awaken gently to the smell of freshly-cooked pancakes, sausages, fresh fruit, juice and hot coffee . Once you´ve had your fill and admired the sunrise, decide your day´s itinerary. Dip your toes in the fine sand as you wander along the beach, or choose to explore the area in your kayak for the chance to encounte r giant sea turtles, pods of leaping dolphins, or flocks of roosting white pelicans. The beaches in this area are fronted by tidal flats full of fascinating sea life, while some also contain ruins of human settlements from the days before the national park. At lunch your guide can share Everglades folklore including tales of early settlers and modern day squatters. This afternoon we’ll explore deep into the sun-dappled mangrove tunnels which penetrate the interior of the islands. These narrow and twisting passages offer a shady break from the brilliant sun. At night we’ll marvel at another spectacular Florida sunset from our remote beach with a “happy hour” drink in hand. The perfect opportunity to enjoy the company of our new friends while warming ourselves around a blazing campfire.

Paddling distance: optional 6 miles. All meals included.

After breakfast we’ll break camp and load the kayaks for our return trip. But first, we’ll paddle further into the mangrove estuary where we will keep our eyes open for manatee as we follow the gentle tidal currents. Today’s lunch break may be on a “shell mound” which is a term used to describe the ancient islands constructed centuries ago by the native Calusa. Sadly, we must return to civilization today, taking-out where we started in what may seem a lifetime ago. After several days in the backcountry, the simple comforts of a cold drink, fresh shower and clean sheets are greatly appreciated. We will say goodbye to our group at 4.00pm with vivid memories of our authentic exploration through this uniquely beautiful ecosystem.

Paddling distance: 6 miles. Breakfast and lunch included.

Rachel R, 2023

This is a fantastic trip! I chose the 5 day trip and loved every minute. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and easy going. I never once worried about my safety with them around. They know how to navigate the tides and the twisting maze of mangroves. They welcome any questions you have about everything from the plants and animals to kayaking to camping. They take care of you completely and make the trip truly worth it!

John M, 2023

We are fairly experienced outdoor “adventurers,” having hiked, kayaked, and white-water rafted uncountable times. But the five-day kayak/camping trip we took, guided by Dave K. and “Bonesy,” was remarkable. A rigorous physical experience for a couple in their 60s and 70s, challenging but rewarding. Nights on the ground, in a tent, surrounded by the sounds of buzzing bugs but also the splashes of leaping mullet, the puffs of manatee breathing, the hooting of owls.

Odyssey, 2023

I had an incredible time with the FOA. Very knowledgeable and passionate about showing others the Everglades! I learned so much about the flora and fauna.

Tamera G, 2023

We fully enjoyed our kayak trip with Dave K. His love and respect for the history of the area and the Everglades environment shows in how he runs his tour. We had quite a windy and rainy trip and Dave was careful to choose routes and camp spots to accommodate the weather when it blew in. The trip requires some physical and mental stamina, but it was well worth it to experience this remote area. I am very glad we were able to find Dave and paddle with him.

Jill Y, 2022

In short, this is a trip very much worth doing. But listen to Dave’s instructions and do some Googling so you know exactly where you are going and boned up a bit on the flora, fauna and local history. It will enhance your experience.

Lynn Nesmith, 2022

Trip was amazingly on every level. Dave is professional and knowledgeable about nature. Food was beyond my wildest expectations. Dave worked around the weather and adjusted our destinations to ensure the best possible camping locations and kayak routes. We saw an array of wildlife, but not a single python

Ryan J, 2022

Dave and Bonesy were great experienced guides. We saw so much wildlife and really enjoyed our three day trip!

Marcia W, 2022

I am SO grateful for the 5-day kayak tour that Dave led, exactly the way that he led it. All seven of us appreciated Dave’s extensive experience, excellent fresh food, and first-rate equipment. Above an beyond them, Dave gave us an element of discovery such as when we approached coves with dolphins, or walked past the cemetery on Fakahatchee Island. He led us to them without introduction, and quietly let us appreciate them for the first time. Many thanks for sharing the remote islands of southwest Florida with us!

I was hesitant when my son presented me with this idea but after speaking with Clayton on the telephone I was immediately put at ease and ready to book. Every step of the way, I was impressed with Clayton's communication, thoroughness and thoughtfulness. He created a personalized experience for us by accommodated our dietary requests, took pictures and videos of us sailing/kayaking and was so knowledgeable about the area and animals. We felt very safe and well taken care of the entire trip. Clayton well surpassed our expectations and we are grateful for the memories created on this trip! Read more Written February 22, 2024

Great guide; friendly and very knowledgeable. He did a great job tuning the adventure for everyone in our group. He even told us about a short hike with a great view; our group went up while he cooked us dinner. It doesn't get much better than that. Definitely will be going again, but next time I will be booking the five day trip; three just wasn't enough. Read more Written August 21, 2023

It was my first time sailing and Clayton made it really easy to learn how to sail these small boats. They are very stable and can store a ton of camping gear onboard. We had a great time with the other folks on the tour! The camping supplies and food were all provided by Clayton and I was impressed with the food provided. I wore board shorts and sun shirt. If it was going to be worse weather I put on a light rain coat. We saw some seals, porpoises, and a lot of bald eagles. I can't wait to go again! Read more Written July 6, 2023

  • Caroline W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Unique, exciting, and fun Sunset sailing with Clayton was so much fun! I had never been sailing of any kind before, but once it "clicked" I found it pretty intuitive. I enjoyed myself so much that I would have booked the same outing again if there had been another night on my Everglades trip that he was going out. I've been on tons of boat and kayak outings - which are obviously awesome too - but it was so cool to do something a little more unique while I was on my trip. Bonus - I have found that most "sunset" experiences cost twice as much as daytime experiences but this one is reasonably priced. Also, Clayton is great and we went out even though I was the only one who had booked that night. Would recommend!!! :) Read more Written April 25, 2023

Clayton is an outstanding instructor and made us feel very capable of learning to sail these exciting, swift and maneuverable sailing kayaks. As great a sailing instructor as he is, he is equally a fantastic outfitter/guide and cook!. By the time we returned to Flamingo on day 3, we felt like we were accomplished sailors. Every component of our camping trip was provided, the gear was excellent and the food was 5 star. Clayton will give you as much of an interpretive experience as you want. 3 Day San Juan Island Camping Kayak Tours

Kayak, camp, and relax.

Price: $925 / Person

I had dreamt of this trip for years. My very high expectations were easily surpassed. The trip was tailored perfectly to our group, from routes, to itineraries, to campsite, to (very very delicious) food. Haven’t stopped smiling since. (Review 2023)

Our 3-Day San Juan Island Kayak Camping Tour is pretty hard to match. So it is easy to see why this is the most popular overnight kayak tour option we offer, a perfect blend of expedition-style camping and relaxing vacation.

Paddle between islands and reconnect to the outdoors. Overnight kayak tours are the best way to step away from the day-to-day grind and listen to the water pass along the hull of your kayak. A diversity of wildlife resides in the San Juans. Seals, Sea Lions, Porpoises, and Whales all share the various waterways we travel.

On evenings that present the proper conditions, we will head back out into the darkness to observe the sparkling of Bioluminescence.

What sets us apart? Keep on reading.

We offer a limited amount of 3 Day Kayak Tours every season. We do so to ensure we have a complete focus on the quality of the kayak tours. We do a lot of planning and customized menus for each tour and we do not want to rush any of the processes. For this reason, we do sell out of space and recommend booking well in advance.

Is the date you want sold out or not listed? Complete the Kayak Tour Request Form and we will get back to you if we are able to accommodate your request.

Gourmet Camp Cusine

One of the many reasons guests come back for another 3-day kayak adventure is our food. Guides custom design meal plans for each tour. We source as much as we can from our organic garden and the rest from local farmers when possible. Each day, guides will prepare healthy and fresh meals. Please do not hesitate to ask for the recipes!

Day 1: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Breakfast and Lunch

Quality Equipment

We go the extra mile when it comes to the equipment we use. All camping equipment is in excellent condition. Tents are spacious with plenty of room to stretch out in the evenings. Warm Marmot sleepings bags paired with comfortable Therm-A-Rest sleeping pads and camp pillows make for a great nights rest.  Enjoy traveling in fiberglass kayaks with lightweight Werner Paddles. Provided Seal Line dry bags will keep all of your belongings nice and dry. We select our equipment with care and put it to the test. Only the best is selected for our tours.

The campsites we utilize on the three-day kayak tour are all typically equipped with water, picnic tables, composting toilets, comfortable flat ground for tents, and a variety of trails to explore. All island campsites visited are maintained by Washington State Parks. Camps do NOT have showers or electricity.

Each island we camp on has its own charm and character. Jones Island offers some of the most beautiful campsites with amazing sunsets and great hiking. Stuart Island campsites are tucked away and protected in a deep bay that provides great opportunities to see feeding Osprey and Harbor Seals patrolling the area in search of fish. Enjoy a hike through the countryside to one of the best sunset spots in the San Juan Islands.

Kayak Guides

Discovery kayak guides are highly skilled kayakers with strong naturalist (wildlife education) and history backgrounds. Not only are they skilled on the water, they take care of you at camp. All of our guides go through an extensive training period that requires a high level of dedication to complete. We spend long days on the water training to gain all the skills necessary to be a professional kayak guide. Off the water, we spend a lot of time in a classroom setting learning all the details of expedition planning, island history, the dynamics of the ocean waterways, and the animals and organisms that make up the complex island ecosystem. Multiday guides are also responsible for planning, prepping, and cooking each gourmet meal in the field. From freshly brewed coffee with a hearty breakfast in the morning, to delicious and filling dinners, rest assured your guide has thought of it all.

Venus M. - Review (2023)

Route & Itinerary

We use our extensive experience of the San Juan Islands to custom plan each route. Guides will factor in wind, tides, and currents to determine the  safest and best route . We balance all factors to provide the best camping and whale watching opportunities.

  • Check-in Time: 7:45 AM
  • Location: Discovery Sea Kayaks shop, 260 Spring St. Friday Harbor, Washington.
  • Pack Dry Bags (if dry bags were not picked up the night before)
  • Meet and Greet with kayak guide and guests.
  • The guide will cover trip and travel plan.
  • Depart for launch location

Once at the beach, your guide will instruct the group on proper packing and kayaking techniques. There will be time for a restroom break just before launching. The rest of the day will be on the water kayaking to the first-night camping location. Lunch break will take place mid-day. Dinner will be prepared early evening prior to or after a short hike. Before everyone slips away to their tents your guide will cover the next day’s plan.

The second day of the tour is the most flexible. We tend to travel to another campsite on day two but base camping is an option, as will be covered during the shop meet and greet on day one. Day 2 starts with fresh coffee and breakfast. Soon after breakfast, it will be time to break camp and head out for another day of kayak exploration of the San Juan Islands. Mid-day there will be another break for a beach lunch and opportunity to stretch legs before getting back into the boats. Once at camp, kayaks are unloaded its time to relax. Dinner will be prepared early evening and your guide will cover the final day’s trip plan.

On the the third and final day of the kayak tour we will make our way back to San Juan Island. The morning will start again with fresh coffee and breakfast. Following breakfast, everyone will break camp and pack kayaks. Day three is rarely spent back-tracking our first day’s route. This means the last day is just as exciting and unforgettable as the first. Again, there will be a short break part-way through the day as well as a lunch break. At the final beach location, everyone will unpack kayaks and load up for town.  We arrive back in downtown Friday Harbor at an estimated time of 2:30 PM .

Please note the itinerary is a rough outline of travel. We can encounter delays that will affect our departure time and arrival back at the shop. Each day may be altered at the guide’s discretion.

Wildlife & Weather

San Juan Island is home to a wide variety of amazing wildlife:

  • Southern Resident Killer Whales: Salmon-eating whales commonly seen June through mid-October.
  • Transient Killer Whales: Marine mammal-eating whales may be seen throughout the year.
  • Baleen Whales: Humpback Whales and Minke Whales.
  • Porpoise: Harbor and Dalls porpoise are encountered year round.
  • Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, and Stellar Sea Lions: Fairly Common in these areas.
  • River Otters: More elusive but seen any time of year. Most sightings are early morning or late afternoon.
  • Bald Eagles: San Juan hosts a healthy population of Bald Eagles with many nesting sites.

Every day is different and we can encounter other species of whales, seals, porpoise, and birds not listed above.

Early Season: Spring weather on San Juan is typically cool with daytime temperatures ranging from the low 50’s F to the mid 60’s F. Expect partly cloudy skies with light breezes to windy conditions.

Summer Season: San Juan Island can have some of the most pleasant summer weather. With half the annual rainfall of the Seattle area, San Juan is typically dry all summer. Temperatures range from upper 60’s F to the mid 80’s F. Skies are usually blue and clear, great for evening star gazing.

Late Season: Fall can be one of the best times to visit San Juan. The days become cooler, ranging from the low 50’s F to the mid 60’s F. Winds can be light to moderate depending on the current weather systems.

THREE DAY SAN JUAN ISLAND KAYAK TRIPS: KAYAKING WITH ORCA WHALES

San juan sea kayaking, why choose sea quest for your three day kayak trip in the san juan islands, best route for kayaking with orca whales in the entire us – home to over 470 killer whales., lowest priced kayak trips to the top orca whale watching habitat where virtually all sightings occur in the san juan islands., routes combine a national wildlife refuge, a national monument / historic park and several state & county parks, camp on small islands with abundant seals, otters & eagles., kayak the beautiful sea cliffs & lighthouses of the western san juan islands along the border with canada., perfect safety record since 1989 on all san juan kayak tours., the best trained biologist/naturalist guides and the newest state-of-the-art kayaks & and paddling equipment., ready to start your adventure.

Our three-day kayak tours in the San Juan Islands are our most popular camping trip. Extremely dry summer weather, whales and wildlife, and hundreds of intricate islands unite to make this the ultimate sea kayaking trip and camping adventure, especially for first-timers. If you enjoy relaxing to starry skies and meteorite showers, and revel in the beauty of sunrises and sunsets, this three-day kayaking adventure in the San Juan Islands is for you!

The three-day San Juan Islands kayaking trip is similar to our two-day kayak trip, but having an extra day sandwiched in the middle imparts a much more relaxed feel to the experience. It may not seem significant, but we notice our guests really unwind on that middle day, beginning with the dawn chorus of songbirds and ending with the hooting of owls at bedtime. For one day at least, you won’t have to think about planes, ferries, and automobiles. The three-day kayak trip in the San Juans is a great escape from modern stress.

Killer whale watching is possible on this kayak camping adventure in the San Juan Islands. Each extra day in the killer whale watching zone improves your chances of seeing orcas and other interesting wildlife. From 2005-2018 our guests watched orcas on 30% of the 3-day tours in May, 70% in June, 60% in July, 55% in August, 55% in September, and 35% in October. Surprisingly, salmon and salmon orcas have both been listed as endangered throughout those years! Prior to 2005 we found whales even more often because salmon were still abundant in that earlier era. Environmental conditions have taken a turn for the worse and very few salmon migrated through the San Juan Islands in 2013, 2019, and 2020. Very few salmon orca were sighted in those three years, underscoring the fact that whale-watching will be much less predictable until our society takes the necessary steps to recover salmon spawning habitat.

The San Juan Islands remain the best place in the US to watch killer whales. While salmon orca struggles to find food, a related species known as Bigg’s killer whale find plenty of prey, and their population has grown to over 400 in our region. Fortunately, they specialize in hunting our expanding herds of seals and sea lions. This requires them to travel in smaller pods and be much stealthier than salmon orcas. Even though they are not endangered, spotting them on our kayak tours can be very challenging compared to the salmon orca. Learn more about kayaking with killer whales with Sea Quest here .

  • Schedule: Tuesday-Thursday & Friday-Sunday with some exceptions for holidays.
  • Trip Fee: $849 plus $10 government launch fee.
  • Meeting Place: Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. Look for our van and kayak trailer in the traffic circle adjacent to the Friday Harbor Ferry Terminal.
  • Meeting Time: 8:00am. On some dates there may be a slight difference in trip start time. Our online reservation system will indicate this if you enter a specific date. Ask about earlier or later departures if the starting times shown don’t work for you!
  • Day 1 Itinerary: We go direct to the launch site, ready the kayaks, and spend the next full hour in basic skills and safety instruction. Paddling begins in the prime killer whale watching zone and throughout the next three days we can spot them at any and all times. The entire route is excellent wildlife habitat sprinkled with reefs, rocks, and islets. Kayaking time ranges from 4 to 6 hours daily, traversing 8 to 12 miles per day in typical weather. Paddling is punctuated by one or more beach landings and numerous float breaks at interesting places each day. Marine parks serve as campsites. Post-dinner we may hike to a viewpoint, do a short sunset or moonlight paddle, or stroll the shore in hopes of seeing bioluminescent plankton.
  • Day 2 Itinerary: Sunrise wakeup, breakfast made fresh by your guide, then a carefree day of exploration in our sea kayaks. Again we’ll travel through important killer whale and porpoise habitat. There are many beautiful sights along the way, including views of three mountain ranges: the Olympics, North Cascades, and Coast Range. Several route options exist with the guide’s decision determined by expected currents, weather forecasts, and group ability and interests. If the paddling day is short, we often hike 5 miles round trip to a picturesque lighthouse perched high on a headland with stunning views. The vantage is perfect for spotting whales and porpoises or watching the sun set. As the sun approaches the horizon, it paints the glassy waters in outrageous colors.
  • Day 3 Itinerary: After enjoying the morning sunrise, we breakfast and depart for another wonderful day of sea kayaking. As always, we stick close to the main thoroughfares of killer whales. After landing we reboard the van for the drive to Friday Harbor.
  • Finish Time & Place: Friday Harbor Ferry Terminal between 1:00 and 3:00pm. This allows you time to catch various departing ferries if you desire to leave the island that evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone in moderate physical condition can join a three day kayak camping tour. While most people do have some prior experience in small boats or camping these experiences are not necessary.

If you would like to prepare for your tour we recommend a mixture of walking, cycling, swimming and of course paddling! You can also prepare by focusing on core and upper body exercises.

A three day kayak camping tour offer many islands to explore in the San Juan Island archipelago. Given appropriate weather and current conditions it is possible to camp on separate islands each night. And we usually explore other islands and areas throughout the day. Here are some islands we camp on or explore:

  • Posey Island
  • Stuart Island
  • Jones Island
  • Turn Island
  • San Juan Island

Stuart Island Marine State Park boasts a pleasant diversity of activities. The main camping area is located in Reid Harbor which is a popular summertime boating destination. The protected harbor is a great place for reading a book, looking for river otters or simply strolling on the beach. Tucked within a natural valley, the whole campsite is very comfortable and protected. Before or after dinner, one can explore numerous hikes on the island which include a hike to the Turn Point Lighthouse or Tip Top hill. Observant listeners can often hear owls or nighthawks before drifting off to sleep.

Stuart Island Marine State Park has the following amenities:

  • Picnic and Day-Use Facilities
  • Light station tours on select weekends
  • Mooring buoys
  • Composting vault toilets
  • Potable Water

Jones Island Marine State Park really is an island cornucopia. The fruits of the island are not just limited to its 4 miles of walking trails, serene overlooks and quiet bays. The island also hosts historic orchards used to grow apples and pears. Deer still enjoy these fruits and can often be seen standing bipedal in an effort to reach higher up the trees. Jones island is a great place to camp for multiple nights on a kayak tour in the San Juan Islands.

Jones Island Marine State Park has the following amenities:

We provide the following:

Sea kayaks, all related sea kayaking trip gear, safety equipment, transportation to and from Friday Harbor and the launch beach, instruction and  expert guides . While camping,  meals provided  include breakfast and dinner. Our  all inclusive  listing price includes  spacious tents  to ensure you will be well rested for adventure. Sleeping bags and pads can be rented for an additional nominal fee – but feel free to bring your own!

What you need to bring:

Beach clothing, beach foot wear, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lunch. Bring a hat, warm sweater and rain jacket if cool, cloudy, windy or rainy. A  detailed packing list  of camping related household items will be provided after you book your tour!

MAPS & ROUTES

3 day kayak tour

The orca whale’s top hunting and traveling areas are shown as shaded areas.  We kayak in the primary killer whale watching zones for both species of killer whales for the majority of the tour. The red lines show our typical routes but do not indicate the exact route you may experience.

There are many routes to choose from but there is no “Set Route” because we believe in being flexible to the needs and safety of our customers given a multitude of factors.

The main or “North” route  explores north from the west side of San Juan Island through an important orca whale watching corridor. Stuart and Posey Islands State Parks are the campsites most frequented. Stuart Island features a hike to a clifftop lighthouse known for excellent whale watching. The group must be moderately fit and sea conditions must be safe to reach Stuart Island but we make it on nearly all trips using the northern route. If the situation dictates, most often by strongly opposing tidal currents, we camp on tiny Posey Island, a part of the National Monument. Rarely, strong adverse currents have required us to camp at San Juan County Park on San Juan Island for a night, with an exploration of the Lime Kiln Whale Watch Park.

The alternate or “South” route  launches from the south end of San Juan Island at the National Historical Park. Orca whale watching is fantastic on the Salmon Bank, a shallow bar connecting to Cattle Point Lighthouse. Dense schools of baitfish draw in hungry salmon, minke whales, porpoises, sea lions and seals. Killer whales and minke whales are frequent visitors, sometimes making multiple daily forays. Our decision to use the southern kayak route is influenced by recent whale activity, weather forecasts, and campsite availability in the San Juan Islands. We will certainly use this route on several trips, but usually don’t make the determination until too late to provide notice.

PLEASE NOTE:

A note about currents:  Tidal currents are very strong at certain times and switch direction four times each day. Our goal is to travel with the currents but this is not possible at all times. Opposing currents could result in arriving at destinations an hour or two later than normal, or cause other spontaneous variations in the itinerary. Occasionally, we avoid adverse currents by using the South route, or a hybrid route combination of the South/West/North routes (that may include a camping night at San Juan County Park).

Be aware:  The shaded zones can be unsafe for kayaking if strong solar-induced winds or unseasonable weather fronts occur. On occasion, we may have to curtail our planned time or even forgo paddling in the main killer whale watching areas. Safety always takes priority over whale watching. If weathered out we will attempt to scan for whales from good shore locations.

3 Day Komodo Kayak Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - meet the team, paddle the seas, savor the sunset.

We’ll meet at 09:00 at our office in Labuan Bajo for a “Welcome to Komodo” meeting. After sizing up equipment we depart into the seas where the Pacific and Indian oceans meet. We will get acquainted with the equipment, each other and the warm tropical waters. We paddle along uninhabited white sand beaches,  have a great picnic lunch, paddle or snorkel again, snacks, paddle or snorkel more…or relax on deck or in your cabin. Our guides and boat crew are there to support you. Dinner as the sun sets over the islands of Komodo National Park. Evening under the equatorial stars and sleep in cabin.

Day 2 - Paddle remote bays, soak in tropical waters,

This day will be a great start with an early morning paddle/swim for those that want (or sleep in longer!) Followed by a hearty breakfast on our way to the Dragon Trek. Here, a park ranger will join us, safely guiding us to the spots for viewing Komodo Dragons in their native habitat. We should be able to experience their life cycle – with nest, juveniles and adults. After this we return to the boat for more paddling, and a journey to our next spot. Here we find amazing mangroves and bays to paddle away from the crowds. In the evening we should be lucky enough to see the vast colonies of Flying Foxes overhead as they head out to eat. Sleep in your cabin on the boat.

Day 3 - Viewpoint, Pink Beach, kayaking and farewell

We have breakfast as we head to one of the most famous viewpoints in Komodo and, after a brief trek, we should have time at the most requested photograph in the Park. After wards a visit to one of the only Pink Beaches in the world. More great food and we slowly make our way back to Labuan Bajo. We should arrive in time for the evening departures, or we will gladly arrange drop-off at your hotel.

Map of 3 Day Komodo Kayaking Tour

Is it Safe?

Absolutely. The Komodo Islands, where we operate, provide a sheltered island group with infrequent large swells. Although there are fascinating whirlpools in certain areas, they are easily navigable. Our sea-kayaks are sleek and extremely stable, equipped with standard safety features. The Komodo Kayaking guides have extensive experience in kayaking, working in, and exploring wild places, ensuring effective risk management and emergency medical care. We have lived here our entire lives – we know the waters, and the risks. One of our Komodo Kayaking guides will always accompany you during kayaking, and we also have a support boat and radio contact with the Park Rangers office for added safety measures.

What is Sea Kayaking like?

Sea-kayaking is an incredible way to embark on wicked adventures and explore the world around you. It’s an affordable and eco-friendly activity that doesn’t require extensive training or exceptional strength. It’s not just good for your body, but also nourishes your soul. Sea-kayaking can transport you beyond civilization and into the enchanting realm where earth, sea, and sky converge.

Is Kayaking In Komodo Challenging? Do I need to be in great shape to do this?

No prior experience is needed to get started. As long as you’re in good health and possess a sense of adventure, you’ll quickly master the skills required to paddle and steer your kayak. Our experienced guides will provide an introductory lesson at the beginning of the journey and will be there to assist and ensure everyone’s safety and happiness throughout.

What are the group sizes?

To minimize our impact on the places we visit and enhance our daily experiences, we keep our groups small, with a maximum of 8 participants per group

Is there more to do than just Kayaking - will I get bored?

The list of activities is endless! You can relax in hammocks, indulge in reading, try your hand at fishing, swim in the pristine waters, explore beautiful beaches, interact with locals, hike through forests, bird-watch, capture stunning photos, play beach volleyball and coconut petanque, dine under the starry sky, share stories, witness breathtaking sunsets, strum guitars, gaze at the stars, and enjoy restful sleep. You’ll find an array of experiences to cherish!

Will we be camping?

No – Camping is illegal inside Komodo National Park. Aside from the potential risks to guests, there is also the risk of fire and waste contamination, so it is not permitted. You will stay onboard our custom built kayak boat in comfort.

Breakfast includes gourmet pressed coffee (from San Juan Roasting Company ), cocoa, fresh melons, bananas, blueberries, and yogurt on super nutty granola. This get-up-an-go meal allows us to get on the water to catch the tide or encounter a pod of whales.

Amazing Trip

My girlfriend and I had an incredible time on our 3 day/2 night  Coastal Explorer trip ! Our guide Cole was a rock star from start to finish and was incredibly knowledgeable on virtually every topic we could inquire about.

The kayaks provided are top notch, and the team did a wonderful job of assisting us with what to bring, as well as how to bring it (more small bags are better than large ones). The different islands we camped on were beautiful and saw loads of wildlife the whole time. Cole was wonderful about preparing meals and educating us on the day’s plan. We learned so much the entire time and best part of all, we were able to catch a big pod of resident orcas!

All in all, it was a fantastic way to spend the vacation and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to go out and see the San Juan Islands in an adventurous fashion! – Martin F, Colorado

3 Day Yoga and Kayaking Tour Itinerary

Your guides will pick you up at 8:30 AM to take you to our launch site on the east side of San Juan Island. We’ll begin the morning with yoga class to awaken your muscles, joints, spine, and mind with views of the Olympic Mountains. After packing all camping and personal gear, we’ll have a thorough orientation covering the fitting of the boat, paddling technique, safety and boat handling. We won’t get on the water until everybody feels comfortable about paddling. We'll paddle north past the unique and numerous islands and wildlife refuges that help comprise the 172 islands of the archipelago. We’ll keep a sharp eye out for wildlife including eagles, harbor seals and the smallest of the whale family, the harbor porpoise. As we look to the east, you'll have spectacular views of Mt. Baker. Our destination for the night is Jones Island, one of the jewels of the San Juan Islands. Jones is entirely state park and ringed with waterfront campsites and a forest of evergreens and Gary oak trees. After camp is set up, your guide will prepare dinner while you get to relax with a glass of wine and appetizers. Wind down the evening with restorative yoga and a guided meditation under the stars.

Awaken to the sounds of the sea and a hot cup of coffee from our on-island roaster. Welcome the morning with a short meditation, then indulge in a warm breakfast cooked by your guide in a dutch oven, before hiking out to an oceanside destination for inspirational views and a morning yoga practice. We’ll return to the water for an afternoon paddle, weaving through the broken chain of Wasp Islands west of Orcas Island, stopping for lunch along the way. Spend the late afternoon hiking a portion or all 4 miles of the trail around Jones or lay on the beach and watch river otters and mink play along the rocks. We’ll flow through an evening yoga practice before dinner, then watch the sun dip below the horizon from arguably the best sunset view in the archipelago. Finish your evening by the campfire and under the light of the stars, or see the “stars in the water” on a guided bioluminescence paddle .

The adventure is far from over on the last day. We’ll begin the morning with our final yoga practice then take to the water, paddling past picturesque Yellow and Low Islands, which are owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy. We’ll enjoy a long lunch and yogi play time on Turn Island with views of harbor seal haul outs and Mount Baker. Before departing we’ll have a group reflection and meditation out in nature to celebrate our journey! We’ll land on the east side of San Juan Island, load our gear and our paddlers, and have you back to Friday Harbor between 4-5 PM to meet your ferry or continue your time on the islands.

The OO crew couldn't have been more professional and prepared from the moment they picked us up at Friday Harbor through the launch and landing. It was beyond expectations and worth every penny.

If you’re looking for a fun and unforgettable kayak trip in the San Juan Islands, I highly recommend Outdoor Odyssey. Our 3-day trip was superb.

I am not usually someone to pay for a guided tour, but this was absolutely worth it and a huge highlight during our time in the San Juan Islands. Our guide was awesome. We were a group kids, teens and adults (two families). We learned a lot about the island, and had a ball along the coast for our 7 mile day trip.

The food was excellent. Organic as much as possible, fresh as much as possible, well prepared, and plenty of it.

This trip was one I will never forget. Outdoor Odysseys does such a great job on these kayak trips. Our guides were wonderful. The food was beyond belief...for anywhere, not just a kayaking trip.

This company has been around for a long time. They know how to treat people.

No Ferry Hassles!

With no San Juan Islands ferry hassles to worry about and the spectacular Cypress Island Marine Reserve to explore, it is no surprise that this is the most popular kayak expedition that we offer. Depart directly from Anacortes to make the most of your vacation time!

The protected status of the island and the waters surrounding it has created a healthy and diverse habitat that supports an amazing diversity of wildlife. A dense population of harbor seals and porpoises forage around Cypress. The nearby Cone Islands see other marine mammals frequently passing through the waterways surrounding the islands. Low tide exposes beautiful and interesting creatures in the intertidal zone, and Bald eagles stand watch from their lofty perches. Few places in the San Juan Islands have such a density of wild animals.

Although you are surrounded all day by the beauty of the San Juan Islands, there is nothing quite so gratifying as relaxing on a pebble beach with a glass of wine, taking in the evening light. On clear days, Mount Baker looms over Cypress Island from the crest of the Cascade Mountain Range, and trails from the camp areas lead you through mature forests. If you make it up to Eagle Cliff, you’ll be rewarded with arguably the best view in the San Juan Islands.

Delicious Cuisine

We hope to exceed your expectations when it comes to the food we serve. We understand that the one thing that you are sure to remember is whether the food was good. On our tours, you won’t be hungry! As the company's owners, we see to the creation of each meal plan on our multi-day camping expeditions. We source most of our food from local organic farms here in the Skagit and Samish River valleys and use the freshest seasonal ingredients possible in all of our dishes. If you have any special dietary needs, then just let us know. We can accommodate almost any request.

This is a true expedition camping experience! Once you depart from Anacortes, you will be entirely self-sufficient, carrying all that you need in your kayaks. Cypress Island is managed as a Conservation Area and so the campgrounds are rustic and are designed to be close to the sea and part of the landscape. We bring our water and abide by Leave No Trace standards. High-tech composting toilets have been installed for your convenience. On these 3-day trips, we often camp in the same camp area for both nights in order to maximize your kayaking and relaxation time. The camp areas on Cypress Island are both beautiful and are located just a few miles apart.

No Experience Necessary!

Like all of our kayak tours, this one requires no previous paddling experience. Our fun and professional guides will take care of the details so that you can relax and enjoy yourself.

The Cypress Island expeditions are the least physically demanding of our multi-day kayak trips and are appropriate for most people of all ages. Our convenient location in Anacortes allows you to spend more time kayaking to this outstanding destination.

About The Area

Cypress Island is the “last best place” in the San Juan Islands. Nearly 90% of this remarkable island is managed by the Department of Natural Resources and has been designated by the State of Washington as a Natural Resource Conservation Area and a Natural Area Preserve- giving it the highest form of protection that state land can have.

While much of the San Juan Islands have been privatized and developed, their shorelines made forever off-limits by private owners, Cypress Island has actually gone the opposite direction. Since 1923 it has been recognized as a place of incredible ecological and historical importance, and great efforts have been made to protect one of the few remaining intact, publicly owned pieces of the San Juan Islands’ natural history.

At the beginning of the 1900’s logging had greatly impacted the San Juans. Much of the timber went straight into the fire to heat the great lime kilns on Orcas and San Juan Island. While some logging took place on Cypress Island, the industry died out before the ancient groves in the Cypress Highlands could be cut. Now, nearly one hundred years later, the forest once again covers the steep slopes, providing critical habitat for island wildlife. The old-growth on Cypress Island are some of the last remaining stands in the entire San Juan Islands.

Currently, surveyors on Cypress Island have identified 142 species of birds (plus 50 sited but undocumented bird species) and over 264 plant species! And that is just above the waterline! This kind of biodiversity puts Cypress Island into world-class status.

While the forests of Cypress Island provide a classically “San Juan Islands” backdrop for visitors, it is the shorelines and intertidal zones that attract sea kayakers. Steep, rocky headlands, protected bays, and sub-tidal eelgrass meadows support a wide variety of creatures that can best be viewed from the cockpit of a sea kayak. Offshore of Cypress Island is the Cone Islands, a small cluster of “gumdrop” islands (this term is applied to the many tiny islets in the San Juans that appear, from a distance, as gumdrop candies). A variety of seabirds, seals, porpoises, and bald eagles are just a few of the animals that can be found here. Some of our most incredible Orca whale encounters have occurred while we were exploring “the Cones.”

The two camping areas on Cypress Island are both primitive areas with outstanding views and access to great hiking trails. The hiking here is something that you do not want to miss out on. Our favorite trail is 1.2 miles long and takes you up to the dramatic viewpoint on top of 900 foot Eagle Bluff. This is arguably the best place in the San Juan Islands to view a sunset and one of the top two vistas in the San Juan Islands.

Our trips to Cypress Island are intended to be the antidote to stressful travel schedules. Unlike trips that depart from Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, this tour departs directly from Anacortes. Located on beautiful Fidalgo Island, Anacortes is known as the Home Port to the San Juan Islands. No ferry hassles are needed to reach your launch site, saving you hours of waiting in lines, sailing delays, and the added expense of purchasing fares. The convenience and efficiency of departing from Anacortes cannot be beaten!

We highly recommend adding extra time on Fidalgo Island if you can spare it. If time allows and you can come the day before the trip, stop by our shop and ask for insider tips on some wonderful places to walk in the forest or relax on a beach. If you would like to check in early and get your dry bags then we’d be happy to do that as well, saving you some time in the morning that is usually spent organizing your personal items. If the timing doesn’t work to come early, then plan to stay an extra night afterward. Anacortes has nice shops and restaurants, as well as miles of trails and hidden lakes in the Anacortes Community Forest Lands. We would be happy to point out the places we love exploring.

Arriving at our shop in Skyline Marina you will be welcomed by our friendly staff who will check you in, issue you your dry bags, and give you directions to the launch site. Take your time packing your personal items at our office before making the short drive (less than 10 minutes) to the beach where your guide and logistical staff will already be packing your kayaks.

After parking your vehicle and loading up the kayaks you will receive a pre-trip briefing with your guide. They will go over some safety considerations, explain the planned route for the day, and give you a short introduction to the basics of sea kayaking. After a last-minute restroom break, you’ll be off the beach and headed to the islands!

We have two different Anacortes launch sites that we use depending on the prevailing conditions and the group's needs. Your guide will determine the best route to take to Cypress Island, depending on these factors.

Launch from Anacortes and paddle along the shorelines of neighboring Guemes Island. Our guides are familiar with the tidal currents and will choose the optimal route for your group. After traversing the shores of Guemes Island, you will cross Bellingham Channel and enter the Marine Protected Area surrounding Cypress Island. Keep your eyes open for porpoises cavorting in the tides or seals hunting salmon. You might even get lucky and encounter whales!

When kayaking, it is often easier to talk about time spent paddling than miles covered. Most trips will take three to five hours to get to one of the camp areas. There should be ample opportunity to take breaks on the beach during this time, including a stop for lunch.

After arriving at the beach your guide will assist you in setting up your tent and setting up the rest of your camp. Now it is time to relax. This will be home for the next few days!

While on the beach, you are free to explore the trails on your own or accompany your guide on a walk if you prefer. Some groups want to paddle later in the day. If so, just let your guide know!

ater in the afternoon, your guide will be busy preparing a delicious dinner for you to enjoy. This is another great opportunity to go for a walk or just relax on the beach with a glass of wine, watching the evening light coloring the sky.

After returning from the day’s adventure, it is time for….you guessed it….more relaxation! Go for another walk, skip stones, or simply sit at the water’s edge and contemplate the beauty around you while your guide is busy preparing your next delicious dinner. (As you can tell, these guides work hard for their tips!)

Day Three :

Greet your final morning on Cypress Island with a hot cup of coffee and watch as the Sunrise changes the shadows on the surrounding islands. After breakfast, you and your guide will talk about the best route home before taking down your camp and packing the boats for the last time. It’s always a slightly melancholy feeling to leave Cypress Island behind, but you can always return again!

Lunch will usually be another beach break somewhere along the route home.

Depending on the route you take, and the conditions of the day, you will likely return back to Anacortes sometime between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The exact return time is difficult to predict because so many factors are involved with this sort of travel experience. We recommend that you do not schedule things too tightly just in case the weather or some other variable slows you down along the way.

One of our logistics people will be there to greet you and help you unpack the kayaks. If you left any luggage at our office during the trip then they will bring that with them as well.

After saying farewell to your guide, you are off to the next adventure. Hopefully, we will see you again!

**This is a sample itinerary that outlines the type of experience that most often happens . Due to the dynamic nature of outdoor adventures, things can sometimes change without notice. We work very hard to provide the best possible experience for each of our guests so if you have any special needs or concerns, or any particular expectations that you have, then please do call us so that we can talk to you more about it. Thank you!

What trip offers the best chances of a whale sighting?

This is probably the most popular question that we hear on the phone. The best answer is “it is impossible to predict”. Kayaks simply do not travel fast enough to manifest a whale encounter on purpose. Our guests have always appreciated that we set reasonable expectations about whale encounters. If seeing a whale is a primary goal for you, then we suggest that you book an additional trip with a whale watch company. They have fast-moving boats which can seek out the whales’ locations on any given day. Kayak trips and whale watch outings are actually very complementary and will give you the best possible experience in the San Juan Islands.

I have never tried sea kayaking before. How do I know whether I can do this?

These kayak tours are designed for people with little or no previous experience who enjoy an active experience. We like to call this activity “soft adventure” because the tours are loaded with fun (without too much adrenaline)! The goal is to move quietly through the landscape, enjoying the views, while rewarding the body with a little bit of easy exercise. All of our tours will move as slowly as necessary to ensure that you won’t get too worn out. Our guides are very competent paddlers and well-trained trip leaders. They will worry about the details so that you can relax and enjoy yourself. If you have any specific concerns, then please call us so that we can make sure that you get placed on the most enjoyable trip possible.

What is the difference between an All Inclusive Package and a Self-Catered Package?

The only difference between these two packages is that in the All Inclusive Package, we provide your camping gear and your meals. Here in the outdoorsy Pacific Northwest, a large number of our guests possess their own camping equipment and prefer to use it. We have responded to this reality by creating an option that saves them some money and allows them to use the gear that they have already invested in. On all trips, we will provide the kayaking equipment and the same exceptional guide service that our guests have come to expect from Anacortes Kayak Tours.

What if it rains?

As the saying goes: “There is no such thing as bad weather, just unfortunate clothing choices.” Joking aside, we are very fortunate that we live in the “rainshadow” of the Olympic Mountains and consequently, we receive much less precipitation than Seattle and the rest of Western Washington State. Please don’t rely on Seattle weather reports to tell you what it will be like up here because we are in a very different climate zone. What little rain falls in the summer rarely lasts for too long, and it usually creates some of the most beautiful kayak trips of the season as the muted colors of the Pacific Northwest come alive with the moisture. We won’t cheat you from the experience because of a little rain. Bring a rain jacket or borrow one of ours and come to enjoy the show!

Can I paddle in a single kayak?

Yes! We have a limited number of single kayaks available to reserve. Check out our info on single kayaks for Multi-Day trips . We are currently the only outfitter in the San Juan Islands to be able to offer this option. The superior training and skill levels of our guides allow us to make this type of experience available to our guests.

What’s the weight limit for paddling in a kayak?

265 lbs for double kayaks and 225 lbs for single kayaks. We have found that these weights are generally the limits for your comfort and enjoyment of the activity.

What is your policy on tipping?

Your guides work very hard to keep your party safe while also supporting an atmosphere that is entertaining. Gratuities are always appreciated, with the average tip being 10 percent of the total trip cost, with some guests tipping more and some less, depending on your experience.

Meeting Place and Time

For our 3-Day Kayak Trip from Anacortes to Cypress Island, please meet at our store ( 2009 Skyline Way ) at 8:00 am, unless instructed otherwise by our office staff. We are located just past the Anacortes Ferry Terminal in Skyline Marina. We like to try and get you on the water as early as possible to maximize your day.

Gear You Will Need

Every person will be assigned 2–20L dry bags and 1–10L dry bag for their gear.

The San Juan Islands have a very mild climate during the summer months. Most trips will experience temperatures around 70° F during the day and mid-50s at night. Rain is not common, but be aware of the weather and come prepared accordingly.

  • Long underwear–polypropylene or something synthetic, top and bottom
  • Shorts (1 pair, preferably non-cotton)
  • Pants (1 pair, preferably non-cotton)
  • T-shirts (2-3 depending on the trip length)
  • Sweatshirt (fleece or synthetic; cotton will not dry) or some other insulating shirt (2)
  • Underwear (enough to make you happy)
  • Socks (enough to make you happy; 4 pairs should be plenty)
  • Light rain jacket and rain pants
  • Water-compatible shoes (Tevas, Chacos, water socks, old tennis shoes, etc.)
  • Shoes for camp (light running or hiking shoes are great)
  • Baseball cap or a brimmed hat
  • Wool or fleece hat for camp
  • Sunglasses (You will definitely want these!)
  • Two water bottles, one liter each (please fill them at the store or before you arrive)
  • Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
  • Book, playing cards, journal
  • Any favorite snacks (we’ll provide a lot, but you may have special preferences)
  • Small camera (bring freezer-grade Zip-Loc bags to protect it, if it isn’t waterproof)
  • Personal medications, as needed, including painkillers (we have First Aid kits, but prefer to keep our medications for emergencies)
  • Allergy medications—if you are allergic to bees, please bring an epi-pen!
  • Sleeping bag must be compressible to fit into one of the 20L dry bags. (we have bags to rent for a nominal $35 cleaning fee)
  • Beer or wine if you like (for insurance reasons, we cannot provide alcohol)
  • A small hand towel
  • Any personal items that you cannot live without during your trip

Anacortes Kayak Tours will provide

  • All camping gear (tents, sleeping pads, pillows, kitchen items, etc.)
  • All meals, including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, and hot drinks

If you have younger kids (under 12) then please call before making a reservation. Anacortes Kayak Tours prides itself on being the most family-friendly kayaking company in the San Juan Islands. We consider your kids to be an investment in the future and we want to get them out on the water and develop an active lifestyle and an appreciation of the natural world! That being said, kids under 12 are best suited for private trips for better group dynamics and safety on the water.

Weight Limits

For your safety and comfort, we have a weight limit of 265 pounds (per person) in tandems and 225 pounds (per person) in singles. Call if you have any questions.

Health / Physical Limits

Our #1 priority is to bring you home safely. In the unlikely event of a capsize, we need to know that you are physically capable of keeping your face above the water, that you are able in some fashion to assist with the rescue, and that your heart can take the stress of the immersion and exertion of an unplanned accident. If you think that you may be at risk, or that your health conditions are of concern, please talk to your physician and give us a call. We’d love to try and help you find a solution and if possible, to get you out on the water.

Deafness and blindness will not prevent you from enjoying our tours, but please let us know at the time of booking.

If you have health issues on the day of your trip, please pull your guide aside and let him or her know. This includes even small issues (like diarrhea) that can turn a great trip into a problem for you. Our guides can then plan the trip accordingly.

Cancellations

Multi-Day Expeditions require a 50% deposit at the time of booking. Sixty or more days before the trip date, full refund of all payments less a $100 per person cancellation and handling fee. 31-59 days before the trip date, guests will be charged 50% of the entire trip cost. 0-30 days before the trip date, guests will be charged 100% of the entire trip cost and no refunds will be made. All cancellations must be in writing and the charged amount is determined upon the date of receipt. Please refer to our Cancellation Policy  page for details.

We enjoy about 250 days of sunshine yearly, mostly in the summer. Even when it does sprinkle on us it rarely lasts more than a few minutes. We won’t cancel for rain.

The only weather that will cancel a trip is windy weather that causes hazardous sea conditions. Your comfort and safety are our biggest concern.

A Few Rules–Please Read!

  • No Smoking in the kayaks on these trips. This is a safety concern for us; many people get seasick after being exposed to cigarette/cigar smoke.
  • Please do not litter. Pack out everything that you pack in.
  • Sorry, no dogs. We like them, but they tend to tear the heck out of the boats, disrupt the enjoyment of other guests, and create safety concerns.
  • Your guide needs you to follow their instructions. Please respect this.
  • Respect the wildlife who make the San Juan Islands their home. We give the whales plenty of space when they are around; we try not to frighten seals that are hauled out on the rocks. Your guide will explain this more out on the water.

And at last, The Fine Print

We strive to make sure that we are being entirely open and honest with our marketing language and also when we speak to people about what our trips are like. We’ve been burned before on our travels and we never want to be remembered as a disingenuous company when you’re reminiscing with your friends later.

To assist us in placing you on the most appropriate trip, please let us know if you have any special requests, concerns, or expectations when you call. That will allow us to either recommend the best trip for your needs or at least to give you a proper explanation about what we can realistically accomplish for you.

Is this for you?

We specialize in small group, all inclusive, multi-day sea kayak trips in the San Juans.

  • On these multi-day sea kayaking expeditions we strictly adhere to a 6 guest per guide ratio.
  • All trips larger than 6 people will have two guides.
  • Groups of 6 or more guests can choose to have a private kayaking experience! (multi-day trips only)
  • A small sea kayaking group can move much more efficiently. We need less time attending to logistical issues like setting up or breaking camp and have more time for exploring and having fun in the San Juan Islands.

The longer multi-day sea kayaking expeditions are best suited for folks in reasonably good shape. Occasionally there is a need to make a long push to get to the next campsite and we would not want to wear anyone out on a long crossing. We actually design these trips to be a little more physically involved. 5 day trips might average 8-10 miles per day paddling.

Anacortes Kayak Tours reserves the right to change or cancel available departure dates and prices. Once you book a kayak tour with us we will run it, as long as weather conditions permit us to conduct a safe sea kayaking excursion.

5-Day Broken Group Islands Tour Testimonials

I cannot think of anything that could have made it better for my family of four adults. Very amiable, responsive management, superb organization, stellar/skilled/ fun guides, top-notch equipment, and one gourmet spread after another that left my family gobsmacked. I am so glad we selected Hello Nature Adventure Tours for our first kayak experience. Awesome!

Trip Advisor Review , August 2019

Spent 5 days kayaking the broken islands. Couldn't have asked for a better guide. Phil was awesome. Seen lots of wildlife and even a humpback whale! Amazing views every day. We got all the kayaking in that we wanted with some nice downtime to relax and unwind on different islands, while Phil was hard at work making us comfortable and making 3 meals a day. All our meals were very tasty as well. Can't recommend this company enough. Great experience, bucket list type trip.

3 Day Adventure

On our 3-day base camp adventure, you will explore the Johnstone Strait, Blackfish Sound and the narrow tidal passages around Hanson Island by kayak, searching for marine wildlife. This tour typically spends one night at a Vancouver Island base camp and one night at a Hanson Island base camp.

Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound are two of the best areas around Vancouver Island to see wildlife. Though they are next to each other, their different depths invite different wildlife activity. Humpback whales and Steller sea lions sightings are more likely in Blackfish Sound.

This unique, all-inclusive tour is always led by experienced certified guides who will provide you with an engaging, on-water experience, seven delicious and hearty meals, and a comfortable stay at two of our base camps.

You can expect to spend four to six hours a day on the water, eat lunches on remote beaches, and explore the Vancouver Island shoreline within the Johnstone Strait. If weather conditions are favourable, you may cross the Strait to the Plumper Islands. The timing and routes of our trips are always determined by our guides. This allows them to create the best possible experience, based on the daily conditions, your group, and wildlife! No two trips are ever the same.

ENVISION YOUR TOUR

kayaking with north island kayak

The Day Before

We recommend that you stay in Telegraph Cove or Port McNeill the evening before your scheduled departure. We will have your dry bags available for pickup at our office anytime before 5:30 p.m., the day before your trip. If you are wondering about nearby slumbering places, please see our  list of places to stay!

At 8:45 a.m. on your departure date, you will meet your guide at the North Island Kayak gathering area, at the end of the historic Telegraph Cove boardwalk. Your kayaks will be set out on our dock and all of the group gear will already be loaded. There will be some onshore orientations regarding the area, the gear, the kayaks, and paddling. After logistics are taken care of, you will launch and embark upon an incredible adventure in the Johnstone Strait!

In the early afternoon, your group will stop to stretch its legs and enjoy a picnic lunch on a remote beach before paddling the last stretch towards camp for the night.

You will likely reach one of our six base camps in mid-afternoon. You'll be able to get settled into camp with lots of time to enjoy the late afternoon sun. Orca, Steller sea lions, dolphins, eagles, river otters and seals are frequently seen hunting in the kelp forest near our camps. Keep your eyes and ears open!

Once you are settled, an appetizer will be served while your guide cooks up a homemade beachside BBQ dinner that will leave you smiling, stuffed, and nourished.

After dinner, enjoy card games with your party, take a stroll and explore the beach, or hang around the campfire and get to know the other members of your group.

Wake up to the smell of hot coffee and sizzling breakfast. Breakfast will be served between 7 and 8 a.m., and there will be lots of time to relax and get organized.

Your route home will depend on the weather forecast, but our focus will remain what the group desires and possible wildlife viewing. If your group happens upon a pod of orcas, your guide can deploy a research grade hydrophone and amplifier, allowing you to listen to their incredible conversations.

Tidal rapids to the east and west of Hanson Island create tide rips which funnel smaller fish and often attract orcas and humpback whales. You will likely be paddling in Blackfish Sound at some point, so keep your eyes out for Steller sea lions who also congregate here.

Your second day will include another picnic lunch at a remote beach and a few more hours of afternoon kayaking as you make your way to a new base camp for the evening.

There you will enjoy another homemade dinner from our beachside BBQ while you reminisce about the day’s activities and fun.

You will wake up once again to breakfast cooking and coffee brewing. After the kayaks are packed, you will slowly start the journey home. The route will vary depending on the weather forecast, but our focus will remain on wildlife viewing.

Your final picnic lunch will be on another remote beach before beginning the last leg towards Telegraph Cove. Your group will return to the cove by 3:30 p.m.

This is a sample itinerary. In order to provide the most exposure to wildlife and scenery, we plan to camp at up to two of our six base camps in the area; however, we may need to make changes due to weather or tidal considerations. Our goal will always be to provide you with the best possible wildlife and kayaking experience.

Trip Features

While we do not guarantee sightings on any of our tours, the Queen Charlotte and Johnstone Straits attract an abundance of marine mammals during the summer. Because of this seasonality, we ask guests to pair their wildlife hopes appropriately with the dates of their visit. Your guide will be using marine VHF radios to communicate with other guides regarding wildlife sightings. If there are any reports of orcas, humpbacks, bears, or other mammals in your immediate area, your guides will do their best to ensure your group does not miss the opportunity to see them!

EXPERIENCED SEA KAYAK GUIDES

Our outstanding team of certified guides is the backbone of our company, facilitating your experience from start to finish. On trips, our guides fill the roles of group leader, paddling instructor, naturalist, risk-manager, weather forecaster, chef, and wildlife tracker.

Our network of base camps allows us to offer a completely unique experience. Our trips include guaranteed accommodations each evening, which means we may arrive at camp at any time, without the possibility of it already being claimed by another group. Our two people to one tent ratio allows you lots of space to relax. Each of our camps has its own unique and beautiful geography, but all have their own beach where you can enjoy some peace and quiet, or gather around a crackling fire at sundown.

Base Camp Amenities:

  • Wilderness kitchens with full sized BBQ
  • Covered dining areas with picnic tables
  • Small Library

DELICIOUS HOMEMADE MEALS

We can safely manage food allergies, as well as cater to gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian diets upon request.
