In-Depth The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Reference 5164A

The aquanaut has always been the other sports watch from patek – considered by some "nautilus light."  but this watch is a heavyweight all on its own..

aquanaut travel time 5164a

While BaselWorld 2012 saw the introduction of the beautiful Nautilus with a white dial, perhaps the most interesting sport watch from Patek Philippe in the past two years isn't a Nautilus at all.  You see, the Aquanaut has always been the other sports watch from Patek - considered by some "Nautilus light."  So it was with great pleasure that in 2011 we saw the launch of arguably the coolest Aquanaut to date, the Aquanaut Travel Time 5164A.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

For the first time, the Aquanaut had a complication! And a good one!  The 5164A is a casual sport watch with a second-timezone function shown via a fourth hand and two apertures on the dial that indicate whether you are reading local or home time.  The GMT hand is independetly adjustable via the pushers on the left hand-side of the case, making setting as easy as any travel time watch on the market.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

At 6 o'clock is a traditional Patek Philippe date indication register tied to your home time.  The case dimensions are 40.8mm,    but due to to the case shape, it wears a little bit smaller (which is a good thing).  The movement inside the new 5164A is the caliber 324 S C F US, which is built atop the caliber 324 S C, that you will find not only in the larger Aquanaut model , but also the 5711 Nautilus - which of course prompts us to wonder "why not put this new travel-time caliber in the Nautilus?" That's another question for another day, and this movement is finished as beautifully as you would expect any Patek movement to be - which is to say, it's absolutely gorgeous.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

Caliber 324 S C FUS has 294 parts, 29 jewels, and a power reserve of 45 hours.  It's interesting to note that this is same power reserve as found in the non travel-time movement (324 S C) - one would expect the fourth hand and home/local apertures to take up at least some power.  But, these are automatic watches meant to be worn every day, so a power reserve isn't a huge deal either way.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

The dial on the Aquanaut is black embossed with gold applied numerals and luminescent hour markers, that could look very cool as this watch ages .  You will notice the date register at 6 o'clock has subtle globe theme - which is neither here nor there.  The bezel has your standard Aquanaut brushed finish, which is truly lovely against this black / grey dial.

The strap on the Aquanaut is composite rubber that Patek calls "Tropical."   I'm not sure if that is an allusion to the "Tropic" straps found on many 1960s dive watches , or if there is any technical similiarties here.  Either way, the strap does its job and looks the part.  On the underside, you will find an Aquanaut double deployant clasp.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

The case is water resistant to 120 meters with a screw-down crown and relatively thin.  In fact, this watch is incredibly comfortable on the wrist with its modest (wonderfully so) size, atypical case shape, and rubber strap.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Reference 5164A is an incredibly well-made and useful watch.  It's casual and comfortable, and very subtle.  In fact, most people would have no idea just how impressive this timepiece is by looking at it - which is a good thing.  It is, quite honestly, the first Aquanaut model that really gets me going.  Would this movement be cooler in a Nautilus? Probably. But, it also provided a significant bump in interest to the traditionally less expensive Aquanaut line, and it's pretty cool this watch is on a rubber strap.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

And about the price.  The 5164A has a retail price of $36,400.  Is that a lot of money to most of us? Sure, it is, but as Theirry Stern told me when I interviewed him last year , a Patek isn't for everyone, and it's important that it remains the end-game for collectors.  Sure, it may take you longer to own a Patek Philippe than most other watch, but when you finally get there, it will feel that much better.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

But, this Aquanaut must be considered in comparison to it competition.  At $36,400, this dual-time from Patek is a full $14,700 more expensive than the Royal Oak Dual-Tme from Audemars Piguet (MSRP $21,700) .  But, it must be said that this particular AP employs a Jaeger-LeCoultre base movement with module, not AP's excellent in-house 3120 caliber, nor the historic 2120 movement, while the Patek is based on their own in-house movement.  If the AP was based on either the 3120 or the 2120, the price difference might be less.

Compared to other sport models from Patek Philippe, the 5164 is $9700 more expensive than the Nautilus 5711 (time + date - MSRP $26,700), and $400 more than the Nautilus 5712  (power reserve and moonphase - MSRP $36,000). But,  this new Aquanaut is $11,200 less expensive than the Nautilus 5726 (annual calendar - MSRP $47,600) and $14,600 less than the Nautilus 5980 (chronograph - MSRP $51,000).

The funny thing is, anyone seriously considering this watch can skip right over that last paragraph, because Patek Philippes are not about price tag.  If someone wants this watch, they want this watch, and they will buy it, and love it.  I should also say that everyone I know that owns an Aquanaut (of the non-travel time variety) absolutely loves them, and the 5164A is surely the new sport watch from Patek to own.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Ref 5164 Review

Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Ref 5164 Rose Gold

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time is a watch that combines elegance, simplicity, and practicality.

Sitting in the catalog with the other Patek collections, the Aquanaut is an ultra-sporty watch that stood out considerably. With a steel finish and a rubber strap, it was a decidedly more casual approach from the Genevan powerhouse. Add in a complication and the usually traditional Patek was competing against the big league when it comes to sports watches.

Here’s our review of the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time ref 5164.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time: A Background

While Rolex is king when it comes to luxury watches amongst the regular public, Patek Philippe gained fame designing wristwatches for royalty. That esteemed position continued on to modern times where only the most seasoned watch collectors follow Patek very closely.

During the dot-com boom in the late 1990s, Patek Philippe saw the opportunity to grow their fan base. New millionaires were being made in droves and with all this increase in potential disposable income, Patek Philippe designed a steel sports watch to appeal to a younger audience – the Aquanaut.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time ref 5164A (photo: Patek Philippe)

Fifteen years after, in 2012, Patek released the Aquanaut Travel Time ref 5164A. The sporty look, combined with a cleverly displayed complication, really made the Aquanaut all its own. Wait lists grew exponentially with the desire to own a Patek sports watch.

Aquanaut Travel Time 5164/A

The first Patek Philippe Aquanaut released with a complication was ref 5164A in steel, introduced in 2011. The desire for dual-time watches is pretty high and Patek made it simple while honoring the casual luxury they started with the Aquanaut line.

Designed for those who travel or do business frequently with those in other time zones, the Aquanaut Travel Time is a fixture in the wearer’s daily tasks. It’s a Patek design that is supposed to be worn outside of those formal occasions and blend into the everyday world.

In 2016, Patek released an 18k rose gold edition of the Aquanaut Travel Time ref 5164R. Both of these case styles remain in the Patek catalog, even if the waitlist to get your hands on one is long.

Dial and Case

The dial of the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Ref 5164 is an embossed black, much like earlier references with white gold Arabic numerals. Outside the numerals is a stark white minute track that stands out nicely against the black background. The embossed pattern of the dial ties directly in with the pattern of the bracelet.

The case itself is made from stainless steel, which means that it’s durable enough to withstand daily wear but light enough not to weigh down your wrist when you’re wearing it throughout the day. The combination of polished and satin-brushed finish is seen on the case, which is slightly rounded into a more octagonal shape rather than a round or square.

This case with a screw-down crown is water resistant for up to 120 meters. There’s no reason you can’t wear this eye-catching timepiece in the pool or on your beach vacation.

Despite its size, the 40.8mm case is shaped in a way that it sits smaller on most wrists. The shape and strap make it wear very comfortably.

Dual Time Zone

What makes the 5164A so coveted is the dual time zone complication and the clever way it is arranged on the dial. Apart from the central hour, minute, and seconds hands, there is a fourth hand and two apertures on the dial that indicate whether you are reading local or home time.

The hands are is easily differentiated with the starker hour and minute hands indicating your local time, and the skeletal hour hand underneath to indicate the home time.

You’ll find two apertures, one between 3 and 4 o’clock and the other between 8 and 9 o’clock that indicate day and night at each time zone with white meaning day and dark blue for night.

When you’re home, the hands can lay on top of each other, maintaining the simplicity of the dial face. With a single glance, you’ll can determine if it’s a good time to call home or if you should wait a few hours to diminish angry feelings from a 3 am wake up call.

A 6 o’clock there’s a tasteful dial that will show the current date at your local time.

Pushers and Date Corrector

It’s easy to change the local time by one-hour intervals with the pushers located on the left-hand side of the case. Unlike other more complicated dual time watches that use crown positions to set the new time zone, Patek designed for the upper pusher to advance the local hour hand forward an hour with one push, and the lower pusher backs it up an hour with a single push.

The pushers only advance the local time hand. The skeletal home hour hand remains unchanged when using the left-hand pushers. When traveling it’s as easy as using the lower pusher when heading west and the upper pusher when heading east.

Simplicity is key and Patek made sure to design this watch perfectly for its target audience. Much like the simple way to adjust the hour when traveling, it’s just as easy to change the date. A small button was included at 4 o’clock on the case band to correct the date.

This stunning timepiece is powered by the automatic movement calibre 324 S C FUS. This includes all the added features of the dual time complication indicating two time zones, the day and night indicators for both local and home time, and the local date.

You can see, through the case back, the 213 components and 29 jewels that ensure  absolute minimal friction. The watch beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph and has a 45-hour power reserve.

Patek calls this particular strap “Tropical”. It’s made from a supple, composite rubber in a black similar to that of the embossed dial. As stated before, the embossed pattern of the dial and the embossed pattern of the strap are complimentary, finishing the design of the watch seamlessly. This design feature creates a sense of continuity and easily makes up for the lack of an integrated bracelet.

First developed for the ref 5060A, the strap is made from 20 different materials. It’s impervious to salt water, bacteria, and UV damage. It’s no wonder they call it “Tropical” when it’s definitely designed for fun in the sun and the water.

On the underside of the strap, you’ll find the Aquanaut double deployant clasp in steel marked distinctly with the brand’s Calatrava cross emblem. This trigger released clasp is not only convenient, but secure. You can’t accidentally trigger it, decreasing any falls when you’re putting it on or taking it off.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time ref 5164: Final Thoughts

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time Ref 5164 is an excellent watch that will not only look great on your wrist, but also help you keep track of time while traveling. The strap ties the sporty-elegant aesthetic together, while providing comfortable wear for hours.

With the Aquanaut Travel Time’s ingenious design and robust craftsmanship, Patek Philippe proves once more that they’re the ultimate investment. Find the perfect Patek Philippe watch for your wrist at SwissWatchExpo.com . <>

I’m passionate about classic timepieces, and I am enthusiastic to share some of my favourite watch models with you.

Since retiring from my career as a professional football player, I have dedicated a lot of time to my passion for luxury watches. The beauty and craftsmanship that goes into producing them are simply fascinating. In this series, I want to share this fascination with you. From time to time, I will present some of my favourite timepieces and tell you what I like about them and why I think they might be a good investment for you.

This month, I’m placing my focus on the timeless Patek Philippe 5164A , also called the Aquanaut Travel Time 5164A . This watch was recently discontinued, making it a valuable collector’s item. And, it’s a true reflection of the mastery of the Patek Philippe brand.

The History of the Patek Philippe 5164A

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut line came out in 1997 and targeted the modern man. This luxury watch was designed as an alternative to the classic Nautilus line.

The 5164A model was launched in 2011. Casually called the Aquanaut Travel Time, it was aimed at sporty travellers. It quickly became popular with A-listers, spotted on the wrists of John Mayer, Ellen DeGeneres, and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.

The first model, the 5164A-001, featured a dual time zone mechanism and the date, with a black dial and a black rubber strap.

Five years later, in 2016, the rose gold model – the 5164R-001 – was launched. Apart from the new chocolate brown dial and brown rubber strap, it maintained all the same features.

The Patek Philippe 5164A

The Aquanaut Travel Time 5164A combines class and modernity, with a black dial and rubber band, and stainless steel accents.

Before the 5164A, the Aquanaut was considered the younger sibling of other Patek Philippe watches, but this model cemented its place in the brand’s portfolio.

Key features and technical specifications of the Aquanaut Travel Time 5164A

The 5164A stands out in the luxury watch market with its dual time zone mechanism, which is indicated by two hour hands. You can keep track of local time zones, as well as your home when travelling internationally.

It has a distinct rounded octagonal case and embossed dial which contributes to the Aquanaut’s sporty, modern, and elegant look.

I personally have always been a Travel Time-kind of guy. I love the 5164A because it is a great watch to wear when travelling. It’s convenient and easy-to-wear. I always found it very comfortable because of its easily adjustable strap.

The Craftsmanship Behind the 5164A

The Patek Philippe 5164A Aquanaut Travel Time is the epitome of craftsmanship and watch engineering. It combines the traditional hand-finishing techniques that Patek Philippe is known for with advanced technology to ensure it meets the brand’s high quality standards.

The rounded octagonal case and the “tropical” strap, which is anti-allergenic and can withstand UV-radiation and saltwater, showcase innovation, beauty, and the legacy of Patek Philippe.

Styling the Patek Philippe 5164A

The 5164A might be a sporty watch, but you can wear it on a variety of occasions.

Here’s how you can style your Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time for different events:

  • Formal: Match your black and silver watch with a tailored suit or tux and keep accessories to a minimum.
  • Business wear: Combine the 5164A with a black leather belt, blazer, trousers, and a crisp, white shirt.
  • Casual wear: Match it with polo shirts and chinos for a casual look.
  • Accessories: Match the colour of the metal with other silver accessories.

I love to wear the Aquanaut Travel Time when I’m on my beach holidays, for example in the Caribbean or in Dubai. It looks very cool with smart and casual wear. It’s a watch that suits any occasion.

Investment and Collector’s Value

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time 5164A has been discontinued, which makes it a valuable collector’s item and investment piece. Since there are no new 5164As being manufactured, the price of this model will only continue to rise.

This is especially true if the watch is in good condition and comes complete with the original box and Patek Philippe booklets. Although thousands of these models were made and sold, the brand’s reputation means this watch will have a faster appreciation rate than other investment-grade watches like the Rolex Submariner .

Buying the Aquanaut Travel Time at Global Boutique

Global Boutique recently sold a mint condition 2016 5164A-001 along with the original box and original papers. This watch had a steel bezel, sapphire crystal, steel case and batons.

As with all our watches, we can source similar watches within just 24 hours in most cases. If you would like to know more, fill in our online watch sourcing form or connect with us via WhatsApp for our watch-sourcing service.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations

I adore the Patek Philippe 5164A for its modern yet elegant sporty design, rounded octagonal shape, and versatility.

I highly recommend that you invest in the 5164A as it will only appreciate over time. And, thanks to my and Global Boutique’s extensive network we can easily source you a luxury watch, like the 5164A, in just 24 hours.

One of the most influential Patek Philippe sport watches of the 21st century recently vanished from the brand's website. It's a watch that won't easily be forgotten.

Welcome to our series highlighting the exceptional watches available through PERPETUAL, Phillips’ boutique service offering immediate access to the world’s rarest and most desirable timepieces. You can view all currently available watches by stopping in at our London headquarters at 30 Berkeley Square, or by visiting Phillips PERPETUAL online . – By Logan Baker

If you woke up early on the morning of February 1, just a few short weeks ago, and found your way to Patek Philippe’s website , you might have been surprised to discover that a number of the brand's most popular references were no longer present.

Outside of very specific circumstances (looking at you, 5711 ) Patek Philippe doesn’t communicate with media when it discontinues a watch. Yes, unfortunately that means there will be no official press release coming out of Geneva to announce that your favorite Gondolo disappeared off the brand's website. Patek notifies its retail network, removes the watches from its digital platforms, and well, that’s about it.

Which means, among collectors and other members of the watch cognoscenti, the annual February 1 scramble to determine which exact watches have been removed from Patek Philippe’s website is partially a treasure hunt and partially an exercise in recollection.

It didn’t take long for a consensus to form. Specialist watch media outlets such as Hodinkee  quickly provided a breakdown of what appeared to be the 11 individual models that disappeared off Patek Philippe’s web presence on February 1.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

The absence of the  Nautilus Chronograph Date ref. 5980/1R and the Nautilus Moon Phase ref. 5712 (in both 18k white gold and 18k pink gold variations) were both quickly noted, but it didn’t take long before collectors noticed a specific reference newly missing from the Aquanaut section of Patek’s website. The popular Aquanaut Travel Time ref. 5164A, cased in stainless steel, was gone. “Patek Discontinues Fan Favorite 5164A,” the Hodinkee headline blared. (However, it is worth noting that the 5164R , cased in 18k pink gold, remains in the catalog for the time being.)

Its discontinuation was both a surprise as well as something that wasn't overly shocking when you thought about it. The 5164A was introduced all the way back in 2011, which made it what I believe was one of the oldest references still in production at Patek Philippe, especially after the fairly recent demise of the Nautilus 5711 (introduced in 2006).

But the 5164A also had a certain cultural cache that counted scores of legendary watch collectors among its ownership ranks. John Mayer is the icon that's most frequently associated with the model, as he frequently wears a Tiffany & Co.-signed example on stage while performing. Ellen DeGeneres is also a known fan of the model.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

The most important 5164A supporter, however, is one that potentially came from inside Patek Philippe’s headquarters. The model was long rumored to be Patek Philippe President Thierry Stern's go-to watch to wear while traveling.

The ref. 5164A is important for Patek Philippe not only for being a very cool, highly wearable complicated sport wristwatch, but also for what it did in elevating the perception of the Aquanaut within the international collector community.

It holds significance for being the first Aquanaut ever equipped with any sort of additonal complication outside of a humble date aperture, as well as for housing the inaugural implementation of Patek Philippe's updated Travel Time mechanism, which utilizes a skeletonized central hand to indicate a second time-zone on the dial. This dual-time hand can be independently adjusted in one-hour increments by engaging with the two pushers on the left-hand side of the caseband.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

It’s notable that Patek Philippe selected the Aquanaut as the launchpad for its new-gen Travel-Time series. Why not introduce it inside a new watch inside the brand's broadly named “Complications” line-up? Or, why not just drop it in a Nautilus?

Since the Aquanaut's launch in the late 1990s, the model had occasionally been described – rather pejoratively – as Patek Philippe’s second-class sport watch. It came to market just over two decades after the Nautilus was released, in 1976; the Aquanaut officially arrived in 1997. The Aquanaut was also less expensive than the Nautilus, and it was frequently presented on a rubber strap compared to the immediately recognizable design of the Nautilus’ metal bracelet.

Attention shifted favorably toward the Aquanaut after the 5164A’s debut. If you wanted to wear what was arguably the most casual take on a Patek Philippe travel watch ever created, you had to opt for an Aquanaut over either a Nautilus or one of Patek’s legendary complicated dress-adjacent wristwatches. A similar Travel Time mechanism was eventually added to the Nautilus family two years later, in 2014, with the launch of the Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph ref. 5990. Even if you preferred the Nautilus, you still – to this day – can only get the brand's now-signature Travel Time complication paired with a chronograph mechanism (in the 5990), which naturally had a drastic impact on the difference in MSRP between the 5164A and 5990.

aquanaut travel time 5164a

The ref. 5164A is a very significant watch when understanding the evolution of Patek Philippe in the popular imagination over the past two-and-a-half decades. It’s hard to think of another reference – outside, perhaps, once again, the Nautilus 5711 – that contributed to such a drastic evolution in the public perception of the 185-year-old Swiss watchmaker.

The Phillips PERPETUAL team in London recently sourced a tremendous example of the stainless steel ref. 5164A-001 , dated to 2016, that comes complete with its full range of accessories, including the Certificate of Origin, a polished wooden presentation box, a wallet, numerous booklets, and a stylus.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time 5164

aquanaut travel time 5164a

Patek Philippe released a new Aquanaut at Baselworld 2011, featuring dual time zones. The new Aquanaut Travel Time ref.5164 is just the perfect traveller’s watch!

Stylish, functional and extremely comfortable are the words that come to mind when putting the new Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time on the wrist. It’s a true dual time zone watch, telling not only home time and local time, but also date (attached to local time) and a day/night indicator.

Photo credits go to Robert-Jan from Fratellowatches , who accompanied me for the meeting with Patek Philippe and did the photography.

By pushing the pushers at the left side of the case, local time can be adjusted with steps of an hour in two directions. The date will follow the local time adjustment, also when this means jumping a day back in time. The day/night indicator tells you if it’s an appropriate time to call the office or family.

Patek Philippe launched the Aquanaut in 1997, more or less as a variation on the Nautilus. You can recognize the ‘port-hole’ shape of the Nautilus case. Gerald Genta was responsible for the design of the Nautilus and although some say the Aquanaut is also designed by Genta, other sources challenge this.

The first Aquanaut ref.506x was replaced by ref.516x in 2007 and featured a more subtle dial. The design of the rubber strap and steel bracelet was also changed, both becoming more subtle in my opinion. The new Aquanaut ref.5164 Travel Time features the same style elements on the dial and straps as the redesigned ref.516x series.

The stainless steel case measures 40.8mm (10-4 o’clock) and is water resistant to 120 meters. When the Aquanaut was released it was the first watch featuring a crystal see-through back and offering 120 meters of water resistance. The material used in the tropical rubber strap is a composite of various materials designed to resist saltwater immersion, UV deterioration and bacterial growth.

Patek used Sapphire crystal on both sides, so the movement can be admired. The new self-winding movement, calibre 324 S C FUS, has a diameter of 31mm and a height of 4.82mm. 29 Jewels make sure the parts move with a minimum of friction and the Gyromax balance vibrates at 4Hz. Calibre 324 S C FUS has 294 parts and offers 45 hours of power reserve.

The price is 30k CHF (before tax) and more information can be found at the Patek Philippe website and official Facebook page .

It looks extremely good Frank! It’s a watch for all occasions that I would love to have, but I have llready a watch.

Bravo!! What a beauty! I was always a fan of simplicity of the aquanaut. Now with the dual time function and the night/day indicator having still kept it clean and cool is fantastic in my eyes. Totally on my number 1 spot next watch to own for sure!

I was pleasantly surprised by the Aquanaut Travel Time. In real life it is so good, so a visit to your local AD is well worth it. Keep me posted if you pull the trigger!

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A-001, Travel Time, Steel

Worth reading, the reference 5164a.

When it was first released, the Aquanaut was a parodoxical watch; not only was it made out steel, but its utilitarian, rubber strap seemed far-flung from Patek Philippe 's classical style. Its checkerboard dial, and its interplay with the texture of the strap, was also unlike anything the manufacture had produced before, building on the contrarian foundation established by the Nautilus .

This example, the ref. 5164A-001 , was launched in 2011, as the first Aquanaut to house a complication . It features a secondary time zone function, displayed through the hollow hour hand, and in the form of two apertures at three and nine o’clock. These are used to differentiate the night and day for both the home and the local time, respecitively. On top of this, the date function in the form of a sub-dial is placed at six o’clock, which is linked to the home time.

The watch has a number of additional, highly utilitarian functions. When not travelling, the second time zone hand sits underneath the main hour hand - a clever feature, making the design aesthetically clean and highly legible. It also utilises highly-practical pushers on the left side of the case, used to set the GMT hour hand independently from the main hand.

The Aquanaut re-interprets a number of signature design elements from the Nautilus  - most notably, the octagonal rounded bezel. It displays a high level of finishing, with brushed surfaces on the case front, and polished, bevelled edges. The steel, three-piece case provides water resistance up to 120m, further featuring a screw-down crown.

The black checkerboard dial has luminous-filled index markers and is embossed with silver applied numerals, and matches the texture on the rubber strap. The luminous material is superluminova, following the end of  Patek Philippe  using tritium on their dials. The centre portion of the date function at six o’clock is embossed with a globe pattern , giving further indication the 5164A was conceived with travel in mind.

The Movement

The movement inside the Aquanaut Travel Time is the self-winding calibre 324 S C FUS . The 324 SC was first introduced in the early 2000s, as a marked improvement on the 315 , and additionally features a travel-time module for the 5164A . The calibre beats at 28,800 A/h for improved accuracy, with a larger solid-gold rotor for increased power-generation - finished in classic Patek Philippe style, with circular Geneva stripes. The power-reserve is 45 hours.

This Patek Philippe 5164A-001 Aquanaut Time Time is accompanied by its Certificate of Origin , which confirms its sale in November 2011. It comes with its original black rubber strap (cut), as well as its inner and outer  Patek Philippe  boxes.

The caseback of the watch features a thoughtful engraving in Dutch, executed in a symmetrical and refined style. It features a date (25-8-2012), personalised initials matching the stamped paperwork, and the phrase  "Voor alle tijd" , which loosely translates to "for all times" - a charming and contemplative addition to this traveller's watch.

Specifications

Closer look.

This Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A-001 comes with its original Patek Philippe boxes and stamped Certificate of Origin , confirming its sale in November 2011. The movement was recently serviced by Patek Philippe, within the past two years.

The watch is in good condition, albeit showing a small ding at seven and eight o'clock on the outer side of the bezel, as well as a small mark at one o'clock. There are slight surface marks across the case, consistent with general wear. The case is unpolished from new. The caseback features the personalised engraving " Voor alle tijd ", along with the date " 25-8 " and the initials of the original owner, as evidenced by the Certificate of Origin. The engraving itself was applied by Patek Philippe.

First Timer’s Travel Guide to Moscow & Saint Petersburg

aquanaut travel time 5164a

Russia is this vast, diverse, and magnificent land that many international travellers dream of visiting. The capital city Moscow and the second largest city in the country St Petersburg are, in particular, one of the most magical and interesting cities in the world you can visit all year-round. That is why today we decided to focus yours and our attention to both cities. Learn how to explore them properly if you are a first-time visitor. How to ensure that you make the most of your visit. What to expect, etc.

The Kremlin, Moscow

Despite the fact that even a month or two will not be enough to explore Moscow or St Petersburg to the fullest and enjoy everything these amazing cities have to offer, not many of us have the luck to spend such a long time abroad. We would provide you with some recommendations and ideas you can totally make happen within a 4-day itinerary in Moscow and a 4-day itinerary in St Petersburg.

St Petersburg

In addition, please note that the majority of the international and continental flights are to the capital city Moscow that is a home to the biggest and most popular airport in the country. So Moscow will be the starting point of your over a week-long journey to Russia. Let’s discuss some of the basics you should know and prepare for!

The first thing you have to do when planning to visit Russia is applying for a visa. There are only a few countries in the world that are to require a visa when visiting the country. In the majority of the cases, you should have one in order to visit the country. Be prepared for your visa application by making sure you own and can provide a proof of arrival and departure dates, and an invitation letter from either a tour provider or an accommodation booked.

Make sure to check out the website of your country’s government for additional requirements and papers needed. The easiest way to get an invitation letter from an accommodation is by booking a major hotel chain. They are more used to dealing with international visitors and will assist and support you throughout the process, providing you with everything you need for entering the country. Please keep in mind that the application process can take up to a few weeks and you have to send your original passport away, so make sure you don’t need it during this time.

However, there is one way to visit St Petersburg for three days visa-free. This happens if you arrive by ferry or cruise ship when you will be allowed to arrive and stay in the city for 72 hours without applying for a visa. This is the only way and a great option to visit one of the most magnificent and impressive cities in Russia without going through the whole visa application process that can be pretty overwhelming, indeed.

Well, Russian language is not the most popular in the world, despite the fact it is spoken by a big number of people, who are citizens not only of the country but also of the ex-USSR. Chances are, you are not familiar with the language and with the Cyrillic alphabet used in the country, where you will find that the majority of the signs around the cities are in Cyrillic, which can make it harder for you to find your way around, but also a great bunch of the names of many international brands and companies. In addition, once you get to Russia you will find out that English is definitely not widely-spoken by the general population, even in big cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg, where most of the people, no matter their age, will speak little to no English.

However, don’t be afraid that you will get lost or in trouble. Let Google Translate, hand gestures, and a little common sense make all the hard work and you will be ok. Keep in mind that having an Internet connection on your phone all the time will be very helpful for finding your way around. In addition, many restaurants in the main tourist areas in both cities have an English menu you can ask for, while the same applies to the maps and brochures of the major tourist attractions.

Getting Around

Both Moscow and St Petersburg have an awful traffic, which means that taxis can cost you a lot. Buses and cars can take a long time when traffic is at its full potential and in order to save yourself some time and coins. We highly recommend you using the metro/underground systems in both cities. Moscow’s metro system is simply amazing. It has a huge network of interconnecting lines that will help you get around and across the city very efficiently.

Make sure to grab a map of the Moscow’s metro, which will make it very easy to navigate, plus the stations are announced in English. In addition, using the metro is incredibly cheap and it will get you anywhere in the city for less than $1. Moscow’s metro is also known for some of the most beautiful and spectacular metro stations in the world that are definitely worth visiting as amazing tourist attractions of their own.

The metro is St Petersburg isn’t nearly as extensive as the Moscow’s one and the stations are more spread out. In this case, you can take advantage of the Uber service in the city and explore St Petersburg by ordering an Uber driver that will cost you significantly cheaper than a taxi. Thanks to the big number of drivers available, you will be able to find a free car very quickly. However, considering the fact that St Petersburg is more touristy and most of the main sights are located in what is called the Golden Triangle, you can easily explore the main tourist attractions by foot. There are also sightseeing buses and canal transports that will take you all along and around the main sights in St Petersburg.

The Russian currency is Russian ruble and you can expect to spend a lot of it because both Moscow and St Petersburg are pretty expensive cities with a higher standard and cost of living. Knowing that both cities are generally pretty expensive will help you plan that fact into your budget and consider some way to spend money if you are not travelling with a limitless budget. For example, make sure to choose a hotel that is in the outskirts of the city and in a short walking distance from a metro station. This way you can save a huge amount of money compared to a hotel in the city centre and you can also save on travel time. If you are student do not forget to take your valid student ID with you since some attractions and museums are offering a student discount.

Tickets and Attractions

When it comes to tickets for shows, museums, and attractions, the best way is to buy them beforehand. This way you can save time and not wait in hours-long lines, you can even benefit from an online purchase discount, and most importantly – you can make sure that your place and visit is reserved since many attractions in Russia sell a limited amount of tickets per day. There are some places that are very popular and tickets can sell out weeks in advance. An online purchase will help you figure out what and when you can visit, and you can plan your tour better and more effectively.

The weather in Moscow and St Petersburg can be pretty unpredictable all year-round. Because of that make sure to pack a variety of clothes for all seasons, dress in layers, and don’t take the weather forecast for the day as a final promise. Make sure to always take an umbrella or a raincoat with you. For women, bringing a scarf can be very useful for a practical reason, but also because some churches and cathedrals in Russia expect you to cover your hair with a scarf.

If you are a foodie, you will be happy to know that Russia has its very own and unique cuisine and we highly recommend you trying out some of the most popular dishes in the country including the Russian dumplings pierogi, the infamous Russian salads such as Olivie, Mimoza, and Seliodka pod shuba, etc. However, if you are not willing to try out the local cuisine, there are many international restaurants and familiar fast food chains in both cities Moscow and St Petersburg.

Things to Do and Places to See

Both Moscow and St Petersburg are cities that offer a lot to be seen, explored, experienced, and enjoyed. Some of the most important, stunning, and exciting sights in Moscow: the Red Square, where you can visit the St. Basil’s Cathedral and the GUM Department Store. The Kremlin that contains the Great Bell Tower. The Tsar Bell, Tsar Cannon, several cathedrals, gardens, and the Armory Chamber. Arbat Street is the most touristic street in Moscow with a lot of places to eat, plenty of shops to buy, and all the souvenirs you can ever imagine and want to take home with you.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

The metro stations, despite the fact that they are one of the busiest in the world, are definitely very clean and beautifully constructed and ornamented. Izmaylovsky Flea Market is just a few metro stations away from the centre. It is a great place to get to know the Russian culture and everyday life while shopping for some more authentic and interesting souvenirs. Sparrow Hill is one of the highest spots in Moscow and offers some great views of the modern city, plus it is the location of the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Saint Petersburg is often referred to as one of the most beautiful and stunning cities not only in Russia but in the whole world. It has plenty of unique sights and magnificent things to see in the city. If your time is limited you should make sure to cover at least the highlights. The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, since its exterior and interior, are equally breath-taking.

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Hop on a canal cruise to explore the city from a different perspective. Visit Kazan Cathedral and St. Isaac’s Cathedral, where you can go inside and also climb the stairs to the top and enjoy some stunning views of the city. The Palace Square, which is home to the Winter Palace, which was the lavish residence of the Russian monarchs and is nowadays a part of the Hermitage Museum.

Kazan Cathedral

Of course, visiting Saint Petersburg without visiting the Hermitage Museum is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope. The Hermitage is one of the largest and most spectacular museums in the world and a day is not enough to explore each and every one of its nooks and corners. When in the city, you can also visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Peterhof Palace.

Despite the fact that media loves to sensationalise the negative stories in Russia and the fact that the country is often portrayed as a pretty unsafe place by the western media, the chances of you getting into a trouble, feel threatened, or in a danger are as minimal as possible. However, keep in mind that some things are rather recommended not to do, for example taking a picture of any government, military or security building. Despite not forbidden, you better use your camera for capturing some more exciting moments. In addition, always bring a photocopy of your passport and visa with you, since police can demand you to legitimize yourself anytime.
