Tour Director

Admire the Sydney Opera House

We’ll take you on a guided tour around the sails of the Sydney Opera House, one of the most iconic sights in Australia. Enjoy an evening performance inside the grand Concert Hall, or board a helicopter for a panoramic view of the Opera House, along with other Sydney stars like the Harbour Bridge and Manly Cove.

Visit the Franz Josef Glacier

See the icy fingers of the Franz Josef Glacier with a guided ice walk or a thrilling scenic flight. When you take to the skies on our New Zealand trips, you’ll get a breathtaking view of the 12 kilometer glacier, along with Mount Cook and the soaring Southern Alps of the World Heritage Site park.

Cruise to the Great Barrier Reef

Board a high-speed catamaran and cruise the Coral Sea to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living structure and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. This remarkable coral reef can be seen from outer space, and we’ll sink beneath the waters to snorkel with a dazzling array of marine life.

Get lost in the gorgeous streets of Wellington

When you travel New Zealand with Trafalgar, we’ll take you along the Kapiti Coast to Wellington, New Zealand’s beautiful capital city. You’ll enjoy an exclusive guided tour of Te Papa Museum where you’ll learn about Maori culture, then spend time exploring Welly’s gems, like the Parliament buildings or the city’s coffee culture.

Enjoy a traditional Australian barbecue with a view on Uluru

Experience one of the world’s most unique dining experiences, with Uluru as your striking backdrop. You’ll enjoy a classic barbecue of steaks, lamb sausages and garlic prawns, while gazing at the ancient monolith as it’s dusty red walls change colors during sunset. As the sun disappears, turn your eyes to the skies for spectacular stargazing.

Our top 5 things to do in Australia & New Zealand

Our tours of Australia and New Zealand will reveal the wonders of Down Under, from the sunny Great Barrier Reef in Australia, to the icy Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand.

The International Antarctic Centre

Located in Christchurch, the International Antarctic Centre is one of the best attractions in New Zealand. There are scores of interactive experiences to show you what life is like in Antarctica, including a thrilling all-terrain vehicle tour and a wild Antarctic storm room. Immerse yourself in the 4D theater and meet the cheeky penguins.

Australian National Maritime Museum

Set in Sydney’s vibrant Darling Harbour, the Australian National Maritime Museum shares the country’s stories of the sea. You can explore three open vessels including a ship and a submarine, and various exhibitions that document the charting of Australia’s coastline and the sacred meaning of the sea to the Aboriginal Australians.

Museum of Sydney

The Museum of Sydney showcases the colonial and contemporary history of Sydney, though pictures, objects and digital media exhibitions. It was built on the ruins of Australia's first Government House dating back to 1788, and today houses a large display of convict artefacts recovered from over 25 archaeological digs.

Best museums in Australia & New Zealand

Our trips to Australia and New Zealand showcase the region’s top museums, from the interactive Antarctic Centre in New Zealand, to the open ships of the Australian National Maritime Museum.

Pavlova is made from chewy meringue shell with a soft marshmallow center, and topped with whipped cream and fresh fruits like strawberries, kiwifruit and passionfruit. There’s a rivalry between Australia and New Zealand over the true national origins of the dish, but both countries agree it’s a truly delicious dessert.

Seafood is a national specialty throughout New Zealand, but the best place to enjoy a meal of crayfish is Kaikoura, a seaside town on the South Island. Here, you’ll enjoy the freshest catch of the day, and the crayfish is boiled and served with a tangy dipping sauce.

Found in restaurants all over Australia, the parmigiana is one of the most beloved dishes in the country. It’s made from a breaded chicken breast slathered in tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, served with french fries and salad. It originated in Italy and was brought to Australia with a wave of Italian migrants.

Best food in Australia & New Zealand

Our tours of New Zealand and Australia will reveal their most beloved dishes, from fresh crayfish and chicken parmigiana, to the sweet meringue of pavlova.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a valid passport to enter Australia and New Zealand, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.) If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest U.S. passport agency or consult the U.S. State Department web site for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at:  www.travel.state.gov .

In addition to a valid passport, and as noted in the Journey Confirmation you received confirming your reservation, U.S. citizens are also required to have a visa to enter Australia. Australian visas are simple to obtain.

REQUIRED TRAVEL DOCUMENTS - AUSTRALIA: Citizens of the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and other countries will require both a passport and an Electronic Travel Authority, or eTA, in order to enter Australia.  The eTA is an electronic visa waiver, and it is valid for one year.

In order to enter Australia and/or New Zealand, you must apply for each country's ETA (Electronic Travel Authority.) Information for the ETAs can be found for Australia at  www.ETA.immi.gov.au  and  https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz  for New Zealand.  Please Note:  You must obtain your ETA(s) at least 45 days (but not more than 1 year) in advance of your arrival in each country.

Please Note:  A separate ETA is required for both Australia and New Zealand, if your Tauck journey includes both destinations.

ETAs to both Australia and New Zealand may be obtained with a smart phone. Please be sure to first remove your phone case and have your phone's Bluetooth connection turned on.  Note:  You may also use website-based forms to apply for Australian and New Zealand ETAs, but these are not recommended as the application procedure is more involved and processing times are not guaranteed.

To install the ETA app (for Australia):  On your smart phone, search the Google Play Store (android) or the App Store (iPhone) for the Australian ETA app. Install the app. Once the app is installed, open it and follow the app's instructions. Using your phone, the app will scan and capture an image of your face and images from your passport, and connect with an electronic chip in your passport using NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology. Most smart phones are NFC-equipped, but if yours is not, you should be able to download an NFC reader from the Google Play or the App Store for a nominal fee.  Please Note:  There is a per-person fee of $17 U.S. ($20 AUD) to apply for your Australian ETA. After your application has been completed and submitted, you will receive an email confirmation of its receipt.

REQUIRED TRAVEL DOCUMENTS – NEW ZEALAND: Citizens of the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and other countries will require both a passport and an Electronic Travel Authority, or eTA, in order in enter New Zealand.  The eTA is an electronic visa waiver, and it is valid for two years.

In New Zealand. For a list of countries and to apply — please visit  https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz .

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,  you should contact an embassy or consulate of Australia to determine what travel documentation is required.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,  you should contact an embassy or consulate of Australia and of New Zealand to determine what travel documentation is required.

The visa is required for travelers visiting Australia for up to three months within one twelve month period.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

Note: In addition, the total price does not include the Sydney – Wellington trans-Tasman flight on Day 10, which must be purchased with your international air ticket.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Along with your primary luggage (subject to the limitations outlined above), you may also bring one piece of carry-on luggage on board, weighing no more than 15 pounds (7 kg) with maximum dimensions of 20" x 15" x 10" (50 x 38 x 25 cm).

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally,   no vaccinations are currently required for entry into Australia and New Zealand; however, an International Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever is required when entering Australia if you arrive from an infected area within 5 days. For complete vaccination information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour, prerecorded "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC Internet website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of Australia and of New Zealand to determine what vaccinations may be required for your travel.

You should be in good health and able to walk moderate to significant distances over varied terrain. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in in order to appreciate fully the challenging terrain of the beaches, rainforests and outback.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To protect people from the health effects of second-hand smoke, smoking in all hospitality venues, including bars, restaurants, cafés, and casinos, is prohibited in New Zealand. If you smoke, please remember to smoke outside.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here  for more information.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

What To Pack

As you prepare for travel "Down Under", select a wardrobe that is adaptable. Many days are spent outside or in transit. Therefore, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Occasionally cool weather will require warmer "layered" clothing.

This itinerary includes accommodations in award-winning hotels and meals in many fine restaurants. For the welcome and farewell dinners, you may wish to dress more formally. On all other nights resort wear is suggested.

Laundry service, including self-service facilities in some hotels, is available on this tour. Additionally, all the hotel rooms are outfitted with hair dryers. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We recommend you pack the following items for your journey:

  • Comfortable, cotton clothing
  • Resort wear
  • Sunglasses, sunhat and sunscreen
  • Light rain-repellent jacket
  • Insect repellent
  • Travel alarm/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms.
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • A pair of sturdy, yet comfortable, pre-worn walking shoes for uneven terrain
  • Camera, film, memory cards, chargers, batteries and other photography accessories
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

What travelers are saying

"Contrasts of Australia tour included Melbourne, Cairns and Sydney. Accomodations were good at all except the rooms in Sydney were much smaller. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef was amazing! We purchased the additional SkyRail excursion in Cairns and enjoyed both the shopping and restaurants the small village of Kuranda. We also purchased the Sydney bridge climb adventure which was great! The guide made it thoroughly enjoyable. Our tour director for the entire tour, Nellie Sullivan, was extremely helpful and friendly. She made sure everyone was experiencing what they hoped for."

"BUYER BEWARE!!! This company has a policy that if THEY cancel your trip…THEY get to keep your money and you get a credit the company. They cancelled my first trip..found out the hard way about their policy. Booked a trip…then had left over money so booked another…which they cancelled…again. Surprisingly…this time they offered a refund, but only gave me back the money I had put down…not what was left of “my credit”. So now I am forced to do business with a company I no longer wish to, that picks and chooses when to follow their own policy!! There are plenty of other travel agencies with similar tours…don’t give these guys your hard earned money for them to keep."

"This tour has amazing sites, good hotels in great locations, great pace BUT the tour director that was assigned to be with our small group added nothing to the experience. He did not give us any info, tell us about what we were seeing, give us any info at all. The only time he talked was to tell us when the next bathroom break would be. Apparently this is common for Globus to use retirees starting another chapter. Our guide was 76 and had no energy. Travel with Gate 1 or Intreped.... guides can make or break a tour."

"I made a reservation last Thursday (11/16/2023) for a trip to Iceland from 12/02/2023-12/07/2023 and then I was told that I can’t have my refund back. When I called on last Thursday (11/16/2023) to place my reservation, the agent (Kathy) I talked to stressed about she "cannot" guarantee that I will be able to go on the trip. Before I provided the payment information, I specifically asked if I will be able to get the refund because the trip is coming up so soon. The agent ensured that I will be able to get a full refund back within 60 days if I decided to cancel the trip. I was also told that I am basically on a wait list and someone will contact me once I can go on the trip. No one contacted me about whether the agency was able to process my information at all, so I've been left in the dark about this trip since the beginning. I called the help line this morning (11/20/2023) around 9:00 Eastern Standard Time to cancel my reservation. I was informed by the agent that I will not be able to get my full refund back since it's too close to the trip date. Basically I was told that Kathy gave me the wrong information, so I will have to pay the cancellation fee. The only reason I provided my payment information is because Kathy specifically stated that I will be able to cancel the trip and receive a full refund. I've never been so frustrated with a traveling agency. I made sure to ask this agent regarding the refund policy twice before giving her my payment information, and she still couldn't provide me with the correct information. It's unbelievable that such a big traveling agency cannot uniformly train their employees with the correct set of information."

Additional details

What is the currency in Australia & New Zealand

Despite how close they are to one another, Australia and New Zealand do not rely on the same currency. In Australia, travelers will have to use Australian dollars when required for payment. In New Zealand, travelers will use the New Zealand dollar.

As of 2020, the exchange rates for their currencies are virtually the same, with the Australian dollar being worth a little more than the New Zealand one.

Weather and Best time to go

As one of the largest countries in the world, the weather at different locations in Australia tends to vary within the same season. Aussie seasons are opposite of those found in the Northern Hemisphere. That being said, depending on which upper or lower half of the country travelers find themselves in, weather and tourism fluctuate greatly.

Travelers are cautioned to remember that October through April in northern Australia and November to March in Western Australia and Queensland are peak box jelly-fish migration periods. This makes swimming in the waters around these areas potentially dangerous to travelers who come into contact with the animals. Please consult tour companies with further questions regarding tour-stops in these locations during these seasons.

Typically, January through March marks the “wet season” in northern Australia. This means fewer tourists are in the area, but also that a raincoat will definitely be required. In southern Australia, these months are some of the warmest, making the beaches and reefs popular travel destinations.

April through May usually has a significant dip in tourism across the country while roads to remote locations in the north become more accessible with less rainfall and the beaches become more temperate in the south. From June until September (Australian winter), the northern half of Australia has its “dry season” and access to snorkeling around reefs becomes a major pastime.

The southern half of Australia sees its own dip in tourism and access to remote, dangerously warm in the summer, hiking locations become available. October through December brings more rainfall in the north, providing water to the bursting foliage that comes in the spring. This is also when wildlife tours are at their prime in southern Australia. Across the country, both Christmas and New Year’s Eve are taken seriously and celebrations can be found in nearly every city.

In New Zealand, the weather is a bit more reliable given its relatively smaller size. The peak tourism period is during the summer months of December through February. While the weather is temperate and the water is warm, travelers who plan to visit the island during this time need to book tours far in advance to ensure their availability.

For those who are planning hiking tours, this season is when the days are at their longest during the year, making unwinding with some holiday festivities even easier. During March through May, New Zealand undergoes its fall season, when the temperature is much cooler and lends itself to arduous hikes across the island.

The changing leaves will make for great photo opportunities as well! The temperature continues to fall during New Zealand’s winter months of June through August, yet that does not stop many travelers from skiing at the peaks near Queenstown. For those who wish to stay warm, hot pools can be visited during hiking tours.

In springtime (September through November), the days become long again and sheep roam the hillsides amongst the blooming flowers. Tourists are few this time of year, but that does not stop many travelers from enjoying the winter sports that are still available along with open hiking trails.

Common tour routes

Although Australia has a landmass that is just shy of being the same as America’s, it is divided into just six states and two territories. This leaves more than 70% of the country under the title of “the Outback,” sparsely and full of astounding natural landmarks. Within this swath of underdeveloped land are two major tourist destinations: Alice Springs and Uluru.

Depending on which major coastal city travelers fly into, they will likely head to another one (Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, or Brisbane). From there, travelers can fly into either of the Outback’s travel attractions or spend a significant chunk of time on the  National Highway A87 that runs through a small portion of the wilderness. These travel methods typically depend on the type of guided tour that travelers choose to go on, as more adventurous ones will likely drive in order to stop at campsites and luxury ones will provide comfortable airline accommodations.

To prolong their travels even further, some tourists venture just beyond the borders of Australia into New Zealand. Just outside the country (4163 kilometers to be exact!) is the island of New Zealand, where direct flights from Australia’s major cities to those in New Zealand make sightseeing in both countries very convenient. The best part is, certain guided tours will provide free-days amidst their itinerary, which allows travelers the freedom to experience either Australia or New Zealand without jeopardizing their current travel plans.

Who will enjoy visiting Australia & New Zealand

Despite its associations with expansive wilderness and larger-than-life animals, Australia is a prime vacation destination for those who enjoy adventures into the surrounding ocean and mountains. For the most part, hiking is a crucial part of many Australian guided tours , which means packing comfortable shoes is a necessity.

In the same way, travelers can also enjoy Australia and New Zealand from the comfort of their many beaches or cruise lines. Travelers are encouraged to visit the vibrant coastal cities that Australia is known for, along with the rolling, pastoral hills found in the New Zealand countrysides.

Since many of the countries’ tourist attractions are found in their major cities, travelers of all accommodations will find accessibility in the cities. It is only when leaving these areas that the terrain will become much rougher and a sense of adventure along with a willingness to hike rewarding distances are needed to truly enjoy Australia and New Zealand’s unique landscapes.

After an early breakfast and check-out, we’ll take you to the airport for your included flight into the Outback. On arrival in Ayers Rock, you’ll begin your exploration of these captivating landscapes as our knowledgeable Trip Leader offers insight into the flora, fauna and unique geology of the region. Arriving in Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, a guided walk in Walpa Gorge promises spectacular views of the 36 towering red-rock domes that comprise Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). You’ll learn about the importance of Kata Tjuta as a sacred Aboriginal ceremonial site and gaze in wonder upon the scale of the rock walls that surround you. After checking in to our stylish 5-star resort, you’ll have time this afternoon to relax. If you wish, you might be able to catch the hotel’s resident storyteller as they share deeper, personal insight into Aboriginal history and culture. As the sun dips towards the horizon, we’ll take you to a prime vantage point to witness the sun set over Uluru (Ayers Rock). Enjoy a glass of sparkling wine and experience the shifting moods of Uluru as darkness begins to fall.  Meals B

Sunrise at Uluru + Sounds of Silence Dinner + Field of Light

Arise early this morning for a delightful picnic breakfast in an al fresco setting that offers dramatic views of Uluru at sunrise – its vast presence seeming to emerge from the desert landscape as the day brightens. Enjoy a morning walk to a nearby waterhole as our guide shares the Creation stories of the region’s indigenous inhabitants and points out the native flora. View Aboriginal rock paintings and then stop by the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Center to learn more. Back at  Sails in the Desert , you can take a dip in the pool, relax on your private balcony or patio, or join one of the activities offered by the resort.   This evening you’ll gather for an unforgettable experience – starting with canapés and sparkling wine on a viewing platform overlooking Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. As the sun casts its waning glow over the Outback and the dominating presence of Uluru, the evocative strains of the didgeridoo will summon you to dinner. Featuring locally-sourced ingredients, you’ll savor a wide variety of dishes inspired by the region’s early settlers, enhanced by a free-flowing selection of Australian wines and beer. As the darkness deepen after dinner, settle back and stare up into the star-filled sky as our resident expert helps you to locate the Southern Cross, the signs of the Zodiac, and other constellations of the Southern Sky.   After an introduction to the artist and his work, you’ll be invited to experience the Field of Light - an evocative, mesmerizing open-air work by Bruce Munro, the British-born artist celebrated for his vast site-specific installations. Covering an area the size of seven football fields, this is Munro’s largest work to date. Immerse yourself in this fantasy garden with 50,000 spindles of light that seem to breathe and sway in the sweet desert air.  Meals B+D

Out and About in Sydney

Arise early this morning for our insiders-access tour of the iconic Sydney Opera House, a stunning architectural landmark with a dramatic harbor-front setting. Taking you behind the scenes, you may have the opportunity to stand on the Concert Hall stage, take up the conductor’s baton in the Opera Theater orchestra pit, or even peek inside the stars’ dressing rooms. The Green Room is usually the private domain of performers and crew, but this is where we’ve arranged for you to enjoy a hearty breakfast – a highpoint of our backstage tour!   [Please Note: The Opera House is very much a working center for the performing arts; as such, the specifics of our exclusive behind-the-scenes tour and breakfast will be determined by rehearsal and performance schedules on the day of our visit.]   From the Opera House, you’ll continue your guided tour with some of the city’s other well-known landmarks, including the Harbour Bridge and Botanic Gardens. From Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair, you’ll have a breathtaking view of the Bridge and Opera House. A guided walk through the historic Rocks district is enlivened by colorful tales of the convicts, sailors and rogues who were among the city’s earliest settlers! See the Parliament House and St. Mary’s Cathedral and drive through some of Sydney’s most vibrant districts including Kings Cross and Paddington. Strolling along Bondi Beach, you’ll see surfers and world-famous Aussie lifeguards! Then take in the view from Sydney Heads, situated at the mouth of the harbor, before enjoying lunch and a glass of wine at the charming Watson Bay Hotel. After lunch, a private water taxi is a delightful way to make the return journey to Circular Quay where a short stroll brings you back to our hotel. Meals B+L

Discover Middle Earth

This morning’s excursion to Glenorchy finds you on the northern end of Lake Wakatipu in a region of towering mountain ranges and old beech forests. Setting out in comfortable and maneuverable 4WD vehicles with skilled professional drivers, you’ll have ample time to take in these magnificent landscapes, including several sites that were featured in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.   Back in town, the Skyline Gondola will take you to the top of Bob's Peak, nearly 1,500 feet above Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. This is the steepest cable car ascent in the Southern Hemisphere and offers breathtaking views of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Walter and Cecil Peaks and, of course, Queenstown. After lunch on the Peak, a thrilling jetboat ride through the picturesque canyons of the Shotover River promises an unforgettable afternoon adventure.  Meals B+L

In + Around Queenstown

After breakfast, you’ll spend this day exploring Queenstown and its surrounding countryside. At the Kiwi Bird Park, you’ll have a chance to observe and learn about some of New Zealand’s indigenous wildlife including the Brown Kiwi, Tuatara Lizard, and the colorfully plumed Rainbow Lorikeet.   Next up is historic Arrowtown. Founded in the heady days of the Gold Rush, this charming leafy town is nestled below the beautiful peaks that surround the sparkling Arrow River. Take some time to stroll along Buckingham Street with its heritage buildings and old miners’ cottages – many of them now home to inviting galleries, shops and cafes.   Later this afternoon, you’ll board the  TSS Earnslaw , a turn-of-the-century steamer, for a cruise across beautiful Lake Wakatipu. Step off at a working high-country homestead where you’ll see highly trained sheep dogs in action and enjoy a delightful lakeside dinner with fine New Zealand wine. Meals B+D

Cruise through Milford Sound

Milford Mariner

This morning’s drive begins along the shores of Lake Wakatipu and takes you through the amazing Homer Tunnel that opened in 1953. Continue through the spectacular glacier-carved Eglington Valley into Fiordland National Park to embark your overnight cruise aboard the comfortable Milford Mariner .   As you journey the full length of Milford Sound, our ship’s expert naturalists are on hand to explain the history and geology of the region and to answer your questions. You’ll have plenty of time to take in the fjord’s pristine waterfalls, rainforests and soaring mountain peaks - and with sharp eyes, you might observe seals and possibly even dolphins and penguins. Anchoring in a sheltered cover, you’ll be able to join our naturalist guides to explore in the Mariner ’s tender or by kayak. Featuring two levels of open decks and comfortable public spaces with panoramic picture windows, the Mariner is designed to surround you with the beauty and sounds of nature! You’re encouraged to take advantage of these inviting public areas as staterooms are small and simply furnished; there is a rectangular porthole so you won’t miss a bit of the scenery even when you spend time in your cabin. Tonight after a delicious carvery buffet, you can relax in the company of your fellow passengers or hit the deck to observe the constellations of the Southern Sky. Meals B+D

Te Anau to Clyde

Oliver's Hotel - Clyde, New Zealand

After breakfast onboard the Mariner, we’ll step off ship and travel to the Punanga Manu o Te Anau Bird Sanctuary. Set on the shores of Lake Te Anau, this is a terrific place to observe an abundant variety of indigenous birds that are otherwise difficult to see in their native wilderness habitats. In addition to colorful forest parrots, warblers,  paradise shelducks, fantails and bellbirds, the star of the sanctuary is the rare, flightless Takahe - once thought to be extinct here on the South Island. We’ll tour the Sanctuary and learn about their captive breeding and rehabilitation programs that aim to reintroduce healthy birds into the wilderness.  After lunch in Te Anau, our afternoon sightseeing takes us into spectacular Kawarau Valley, home to the famous Bungy Bridge where two daring adventurers launched the worldwide bungee jumping craze in 1988. The day’s journey ends at Oliver’s Hotel , set on an authentic 19th-century homestead in historic Clyde.  Meals B+L

Exploring Central Otago

With fruit orchards, waterways and rolling hills, Central Otago is one of New Zealand’s loveliest and most bountiful agricultural areas. After breakfast, you’ll begin your exploration at a lively farmers market in Cromwell, a charming and historic town founded during the Gold Rush days of the 1800’s. At one of the area’s local orchards, you’ll have a chance to sample some of the region’s bounty. Then enjoy a guided tour, wine tasting and lunch at a nearby vineyard estate.   In the mid 1800’s, this region also witnessed New Zealand’s first major gold rush and fortune seekers and adventurers poured into the region to dig for gold. This afternoon’s tour at the Goldfields Mining Center immerses you in this colorful chapter of the island’s history. You can follow paths along the Kawarau Gorge to the mine shafts that were excavated more than a century ago and see the land laid bare by ground sluicing. Gold nuggets can still be found in the soil and you might even try our luck as you try your hand at gold panning! Enjoy a congenial dinner and another tranquil night in Clyde.  Meals B+L+D

Onward to Mt. Cook

The Hermitage - Mount Cook, New Zealand

Departing Clyde this morning, our first stop of the day will be the Maori Point Vineyard . Against a lovely mountain backdrop, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the estate as we learn about the viticulture traditions of Central Otago, one of New Zealand’s premier wine-producing areas. Paired with local products including dried fruits, nuts, pâté, artisanal cheese and freshly baked bread, we’ll sample four of their award-winning wines including Pinot Noir and a desert wine to finish. Then we’ll continue through the Lindis Pass at an altitude of 3,800 feet and make our way through the Mackenzie Basin – a land of powder blue lakes and wide-open grasslands set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Arriving in the beautiful Aoraki Mt. Cook National Park, you’ll check in to the comfortable Hermitage Hotel in time for an available Mt. cook flightseeing adventure, and the thrill of seeing New Zealand's highest peak from the air. Tonight after dinner, the absence of ambient light makes the Aoraki MacKenzie International Dark Sky Reserve one of the best places to view the Southern Constellations.  Meals B+D

Canterbury Plains to the Garden City

The George - Christchurch, New Zealand

After breakfast, you'll have some free time to enjoy the delightful setting of our hotel. A pleasant stroll on the landscaped grounds or through the surrounding alpine meadows would offer a chance to take in the fresh mountain air and marvelous views of the soaring terrain. Later, you’ll depart the National Park to journey over the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.   With its lovely parks and handsome Gothic buildings, there's a delightful, very English ambience to Christchurch. In contrast, the Cardboard Cathedral designed by Shigeru Ban in 2011 is a marvel of 21st-century architectural design and ingenuity, constructed of paper tubes, re-purposed shipping containers and a lightweight outer skin. Upon arrival, you'll set out to see the town's architectural landmarks and the Botanic Gardens - founded in 1863 with the planting of a single English oak tree. From this humble beginning, the garden has grown to encompass mature trees, expansive lawns and 10 different gardens set within a loop of the gently flowing Avon River. This evening, we’ll take you to one of our favorite restaurants here in Christchurch for a Farewell Dinner featuring fresh locally-sourced fare. Enjoy a glass of New Zealand wine and raise a toast to your traveling companions and new friendships. Then retreat to our luxury boutique hotel on the Avon River for your final night.  Meals B+D

New Zealand, a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation, also offers a veritable playground for the adventurous. The temperate climate makes it ideal for year-round New Zealand adventures.

Destination Must-See's

New Zealand ms1

Queenstown:

Queenstown is a resort town on New Zealand’s South Island. The city is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu and has spectacular views of nearby mountains and the Southern Alps. The town’s economy is focused on tourism, especially adventure and ski tourism, boasting over 200 adventure tourism activities to take part in.

New Zealand ms2

It is the highest mountain in New Zealand at a staggering 12,218 feet in height. It lies in the Southern Alps, and is a part of Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park. Mt. Cook is popular with mountain climbers who are looking for a challenge and is a popular destination for nature-lovers and casual hikers as well.

New Zealand ms3

This city lies on the North Island of New Zealand and is the largest and most populous area in the country. Roughly one third of New Zealand’s population resides here, dating back to the year 1350 when the Maori people populated the land that is known for being rich and fertile. It is now filled with parks, nature, and volcanic fields as well as home to a rich culture and a good quality of living.

New Zealand ms4

This coastal city is located in the Otago region and one of the Southern Hemisphere’s best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities. The urban area of Dunedin lies on the central-eastern coast of Otago, surrounded by the head of Otago harbor. Dunedin is known as the Edinburgh of the south because of its Scottish heritage.

Destination Must-Do's

Milford Sound 23

Milford Sound:

Home to rugged landscapes and all-natural beauty, Milford Sound is described by some as the Eighth Wonder of the World. This breathtaking region is situated on the west coast of the South Island and features towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and surreal views to all who visit. Among the surrounding peaks, travelers will witness “The Elephant,” resembling an elephant’s head, at 4,977 feet tall; and “The Lion,” resembling a crouching lion, at 4,272 feet tall.

Bay Islands CoOp 23

Bay of Islands:

As a subtropical micro-region, known for both stunning scenery and deep rooted history, the Bay of Islands has a lot to offer travelers. In the past, these waters were once full of ship deserters, sailors, whalers, ex-convicts, and other rogues – but now the Bay of Islands is a tranquil vacation destination. Among the 144 islands that dot the warm South Pacific Bay is the famous “Hole in the Rock.” Etched over time by wind in waves, the “hole” is large enough to travel through by boat when the tide is just right.

New Zealand md4

Explorer Six - 6 Day Tour of Tasmania

Tour guide Doc (Shaun) was excellent. His communication and driving skills were extremely good. Accommodation was not good. When organising the tour there was no coordination as a result we did Not get what we asked for. We were told we will have a private bathroom, but we were put in a hostel with common bathrooms. The bedroom in the hostel was very small and the bunk beds were not good enough for two ladies who are 79 and 75 years old. We were told that the tour group ages were from 18 to 80, but somethings were not good enough for older ladies.

6 Day Perth to Exmouth Coral Coaster (One Way)

During the booking process I had a few problems with payment, but the team was super sweet to fix it for me and even called me to keep me appraised of the process. The tour in itself was so incredible, I was sad when it was over.

Kangaroo Island Adventure Tour

Kangaroo Island Adventure

Wonderful trip! Highly recommend! Our guide/driver Kevin really knew Kangaroo Island and provided some flexibility in the schedule. Accommodations in both Penneshaw and Kingscote were comfortable. The breakfasts provided were very good. Favorites were Flinders Chase National Park and the Remarkable Rocks, the Penneshaw Penguins, and Seal Bay.

10 Day Perth to Adelaide Adventure Tour Tour

10 Day Perth to Adelaide Adventure Tour

Myself and 8 friends crossed the Nullarbor with Chris as our guide, driver, cook and allrounder. He was very considerate of adjusting our schedule to the weather, which wasn't the best some days. He was always chirpy, friendly, informative and as a tour guide myself, I found him to be on top of his game. Long driving days on this trip, but never boring. The places we stopped were varied, saw plenty of wildlife, caught the end of the wildfowers at Fitzgerald River NP and managed a great walk at Cape Le Grande NP before the weather blew in. I highly recommend this trip. Very professional, good communication and a great way to cross the country.

Kakadu\'s Ancient Secrets (5 Days) Tour

Kakadu's Ancient Secrets (5 Days)

What an amazing tour! Unique accommodations, neat stops with great commentary from our driver guide Gordon! Great group of people! I cant say enough good things about this tour and this company!

Kakadu, Arnhem Land, Katherine & Litchfield Adventure Tour

Kakadu, Arnhem Land, Katherine & Litchfield Adventure

Great trip! Exceeded expectations. Three national parks, the walks and the waterfalls were breathtaking. But the bonus was we had an awesome group. A range of ages, nationalities and even within the Aussie’s we were from different states … but all pitched in with the meals and jobs. We had much fun when back at the campsite. Would recommend the trip! Rick our tour guide was very accommodating and also made the trip. Thank you!
