Best Things to do in Marylebone: An Insider’s Area Guide

Love This? Save and Share!

Tucked behind the nightmare that is Oxford Street, the quiet streets of well-heeled Marylebone couldn’t stand in starker contrast.

Stroll around and you’ll discover an area rich in history, with quirky museums sitting alongside independent shops, traditional pubs next to chic boutiques. It’s time to explore the best things to do in Marylebone.

Marylebone is an area of quiet delights. Less ostentatious than nearby Mayfair, it’s often billed as a village that got sucked up into central London – if that village happened to be filled with imposing rebond-bricked Georgian architecture and costly shops.

Independent boutiques and cafes thrive and a selection of some of the city’s most interesting museums and galleries – not to mention some of the city’s quaintest pubs , most stylish bars and restaurants . It’s an area we’ve come to love in recent years – a small pocket of London that somehow manages to feel both historic and contemporary at the same time.

Things to do in marylebone.

Delving into the spots you shouldn’t miss.

The Wallace Collection

The Great Gallery, The Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is one of London’s most fabulous free museums – an extensive collection of art and furniture in a beautiful stately home on Manchester Square.

The collection was put together by four subsequent Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace (widely thought to be the illegitimate son of the fourth Marquess of Hertford – seemingly borne out by the fact the Marquess left him the family collection and extensive property on his death) and bequeathed to the nation by Wallace’s wife.

Interesting as the history of the collection is, it’s the collection itself that draws visitors time and time again – over 5,500 items are displayed in 25 beautifully-decorated galleries. Expect to see works by artists such as Velazquez, Titian, Rembrandt and Canaletto hung on jewel-coloured damask walls, hovering over baroque furniture.

Franz Hal's The Laughing Cavalier

You’ll find the most famous work Franz Hal’s The Laughing Cavalier in the aptly-named Great Gallery.

Marylebone Parish Church

Tribute to the Brownings in Marylebone Church

Marylebone’s population expanded rapidly in the 18th century – with the result that a new parish church was needed to replace the now-destroyed St Mary-by-the-Bourne (aha, we sense the origins of a name) church.

The grandeur of the new Marylebone Parish Church may be diminished by its unattractive location on the heaving Marylebone Road but it’s an imposing building with a lot of history and well deserving of a spot in any Marylebone guide.

In fact, Marylebone Parish Church played a pivotal role in the Victorian romance of the century – between the poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barret Browning. They got married in secret here after a quiet romance hidden from Barret Browning’s controlling father – ask in advance and you can see the Browning Chapel.

British Dental Association Museum

Inside the British Dental Association Museum

You know how we love a weird museum and it just so happens that Marylebone is blessed with two that our editor, Julianna, featured in her Unusual London Book .

The first, the small museum in the British Dental Association is a jaw-clenchingly frank jaunt through the (sometimes unpleasant) history of dentistry.

Think dentists are something to be scared of today? How about the time when it was common practice for your blacksmith to try their hand at yanking out uncooperative teeth?

We dare you not to shiver as you thumb through the brute instruments on display. There are even small interactive exhibits where you can practice drilling and pulling teeth.

Anaesthesia Heritage Centre

You’ll find the second of Marylebone’s quirky museum offerings in the basement of the Association of Anaesthetists. If the name didn’t give it away, the Anaesthesia Heritage Centre is dedicated to all things in the world of anaesthesia and pain relief.

Don’t knock it – it’s surprisingly interesting – walking you through the evolution of one of the most important developments in modern medicine through an extensive collection of displays.

BBC Broadcasting House

BBC Broadcasting House

The grand art-deco buildings of BBC Broadcasting House are nothing if not controversial – even now, coming on to a century after its completion. Designed by G Vaal Myers, the Portland-stone clad structure was the first purpose-built broadcasting building. Totally worth seeing, if only for the giant sculptures on its exterior – Prospero and Ariel by Eric Gill.

Regent’s Park

Regent's Park

The grandest of London’s Royal Parks, Regent’s Park is a purpose-built pleasure ground enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Where else in the city can you find a park with an extensive rose garden, zoo, canal, outdoors theatre and boating lake?

Realistically, only the southern reaches fall within Marylebone itself but it would be a shame not to explore the whole if you have the time.

Sherlock Holmes Museum

Sherlock Holmes Museum

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective famously resided at 221B Baker Street – the very location where you’ll now find The Sherlock Holmes Museum . As the name suggests – the space is dedicated to the deerstalker wearing, cigar puffing detective – complete with recreations of the residence lived in by Holmes and his famous sidekick, Dr John Watson.

St James Spanish Place

St James Spanish Place

You have the architect Edward Goldie to thank for the striking Gothic beauty of St James church. Eye-catching as it is from the outside – the inside hides one of the most artistic English Gothic interiors in the city and which looks much older than it is (it was finished in 1890).

The Spanish Place is a reference to the time when Hertford House – now home of The Wallace Collection – was the home of the Spanish Embassy. At a time when it was difficult for Roman Catholics to worship openly, the Embassy and its chapel provided a place where they could practice their faith.

Wigmore Hall

The relatively small confines of Wigmore Hall may not quite be where you’d expect to find one of London’s best concert halls but hey, nothing is ever quite what it seems. The hall was first built in 1901 (when it went by the name of Bechstein Hall) and is famed for its near-perfect acoustics. Those acoustics – and the plush interior – have made it a favourite for chamber recitals ever since.

Wimpole Mews

Wimpole Mews

Like most posher parts of London, Mayfair is dotted with a number of mews. Wimpole Mews is the prettiest of the area’s offerings. It also stands out for being the location where many of the key events of the scandalous Profumo Affair played out in the sixties.

Eating & Drinking in Marylebone

Our favourite places to eat and drink around Marylebone.

Food at Monocle Cafe

Marylebone stalwart Orrey has been wowing locals with its high-end French cuisine for over two decades now – and still shows no signs of abating. Elegance abounds – both in the dining room and on the menu, which features fabulous European classics such as seafood linguine with a lobster bisque.

28-50

The Marylebone outpost of stylish enclave of wine bar / restaurant 28-50 takes the concept of its Holborn predecessor and makes it yet more fabulous. The result is an elegant place for you to quaff great wine accompanied by seasonal culinary classics like lamb shoulder on a bed of barley and squash or black olive polenta with cherry tomatoes and a herb salad.

The Italians

The Italians

Looking for delicious Italian food in Marylebone Village ? Head to The Italians for a tasty Mediterranean toastie and a glass of vino or two. Step inside the wine bar and you’ll be greeted by an entire wall of wine – good luck deciding which to quaff.

On our last visit, we dived mouth first into the delicious bruschetta – though we definitely wish we ordered the beef lasagna on the side. Our tip? Go hungry and order plenty to share with a group of friends.

Seymour’s Parlour

Boutique hotel The Zetter Townhouse is no stranger to a quirky cocktail bar – as their Farringdon outpost will attest. So it should come as no surprise that Seymour’s Parlour is alluring and eccentric in equal measure. The decor – filled with fictional Uncle Seymour’s collection of bric a brac in a dusky red room is the perfect setting for you to enjoy one of the bar’s inventive (and may we say it, damn delicious) cocktails.

Chiltern Firehouse

Undoubtedly Marylebone’s most prestigious restaurant, the hype about celebrity favourite Chiltern Firehouse may have died down a bit but the quality of Nuno Mendes’ deceptively simple menu has not. Mendes’ emphasis on relaxed reimagined classics with bold flavours is not to be sniffed at, going a long way to justifying the eye-wateringly high prices.

Monocle Cafe

The cutesy monochrome awning of Monocle Cafe may be what lures you in, but it’s the relaxed pace, tasty bites and perfectly-made coffee that will keep you there. Just the right amount of quirky, it’s deservedly popular so you may have to jostle for a seat in the small cafe.

Top Shopping Spots

Daunt books .

Daunt Books Marylebone

It’s nice to see that London’s most famous bookshop isn’t a big soulless chain but rather an independent bookseller in a gorgeous Edwardian building on Marylebone High Street. Sure, Daunt Books is one of the city’s most Instagrammable spots but don’t let that distract you from the fact that it’s actually a stellar bookshop and a great place to stock up on new reads.

They specialise in travel – but the collection extends its web to pretty much every genre and style.

The Conran Shop

Few names are as synonymous with good design as Conran, so it’s little surprise that Marylebone’s Conran Shop functions as a mecca for London’s design crowd. Originally a stable building, the shop provides three floors of home inspiration – from discreet staples to one-off design classics.

Cabbages & Frocks

Forget about tacky markets selling knock-off goods, the weekly Cabbages & Frocks market brings some of fashion’s rising stars, chic accessories from designer makers and delicious food to Marylebone each Saturday. Its eclectic offerings have seen it become a London favourite throughout the 11 years it’s been running. Find it in the courtyard of Marylebone Parish Church.

Marylebone Farmers Market

Marylebone’s chi chi farmers market is an exercise in all that’s good and great about neighbourhood farmers markets. Go to shop super-fresh seasonal food from an array of vegetable and fruit sellers, fishmongers, butchers and artisan food producers at one of the best Sunday markets in London . You’ll find it on Aybrook Street.

Map of Marylebone

Practical tips for exploring.

  • Marylebone is well-served by public transport. There’s London Marylebone railway station, as well as Regent’s Park, Oxford Circus, Bond Street, Regent’s Park, Edgware Road, Great Portland Street and Baker Street scattered in and around the area.
  • Short on time? Make a visit to The Wallace Collection a priority – the collection features many of the great masters and it’s a beautiful setting.
  • Chiltern Firehouse is still one of the hottest tables in town – pair it with cocktails at Seymour’s Parlour for a classic night out.

The Zetter Townhouse

Quirky glamour

Quirky in all the right ways, The Zetter Townhouse is the place to stay when you’re tired of cookie-cutter hotels but still want to splurge on the luxe-factor.

Chiltern Firehouse

Exclusive hotel with a stellar restaurant.

Andre Balzac’s spenny hotel in an old fire station has quickly established itself as one of the area’s must-stays.

Marylebone may appear as a bit of a mystery.

Not overtly glamorous like its neighbor, Mayfair or as quirky as its pal Paddington, Marylebone sits somewhere, quite literally, in the middle.

It’s charming, mysterious, a little village-like and yet so central.

Even if you’re only here for a brief visit, there’s so much to see, eat and enjoy, you may soon find that this enigmatic corner of London is one of the best there is.

Here are the best things to do in Marylebone.

Best Things to do in Marylebone

1. the regent’s park.

Regents Park

It won’t come as a surprise that one of the best and most popular things to do in a Marylebone area guide is to take a wander around the expansive local landmark that is the Regent’s Park.

Did you know that the Park was originally used by the actual Prince Regent as a pleasure garden after being converted from a hunting and farming ground.

Nowadays, the Park is home to London Zoo , the Open Air Theatre, Queen Mary’s Rose Garden and a number of official residences for royal families and foreign ambassadors.

Despite the famous residents and many attractions, the Regents Park remains one of the most peaceful green havens in central London .

There’s also a great onsite cafe and plenty of areas to set up your own picnic if the weather permits.

2. Explore the High Street

High Street

Marylebone High Street is a classic London high street made up of high end fashion and homeware stores, independent boutiques, wine bars and some of the best charity shops on this side of the city.

Some of the highlights of the high street and surrounds, include Matches Fashion for luxury designer wear, the Conran Shop for quirky and contemporary homewares, Daylesford Organic for gourmet delicacies and gifts and Paul Rothe & Son, serving up fresh sandwiches, soups, sauces and snacks since the 1900s.

3. The Wallace Collection

Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection may not be as well known as the V&A or Natural History Museum , but this once private residence turned free museum is a real hidden gem amongst London’s museum scene.

Not only is the Wallace Collection home to an impressive collection of artworks, it also has one of the prettiest hidden cafe courtyards in London.

The museum showcases art spanning a range of subjects, from landscapes to portraits, and includes work by a range of artists, from Rembrandt, Rubens and Hals to name a few.

Between floors, it is highly recommended to take a break in the light and airy courtyard cafe for a shared afternoon tea or light meal.

The scones are excellent and the surroundings are sublime.

4. Madame Tussauds

Madame Tussauds

It might be a bit cheesy, but posing with your favorite celebrities is a quintessential London activity, and one of the top things to do in Marylebone.

Being one of the most popular tourist activities means that the queues to enter can be up to two hours during peak season, but insiders know to pre-book a ticket for faster entry.

As for who you can spot inside, keep an eye out for the British royal family, Shakespeare, Beyonce and the Rock, along with fan-favorite characters from Star Wars and the Marvel films.

5. Sherlock Holmes Museum

Sherlock Holmes Museum

If you’re wondering what to do in Marylebone with kids, the Sherlock Holmes Museum remains one of the most popular activities.

Dedicated to the famous fictional sleuth, the Sherlock Holmes Museum is a compact but impressive museum with traditional furniture and inspired artifacts giving visitors an insight into the fictional detective’s legendary work.

You’ll be greeted at the door with a cheerful guard, and shown around by costumed guides, making the entire experience a wholesome and interactive way to learn more about life in London during the Victorian era.

If you’re looking for a more intimate Sherlock experience, check out the Private Sherlock Holmes Walking Tour in London!

6. Daunt Books

Daunt Books

If you simply walked past Daunt Books , you’d never guess the size and grandness of the interiors of this much loved bookstore.

Whilst there are a few branches of Daunt Books around London, the Marylebone location is one of the most impressive.

With its high arched glass ceiling, stained windows and traditional wood panelling, you should definitely stop in briefly, even if it’s just to admire the architecture of the store.

7. Browse the vintage shops

If you love looking for a vintage treasure, the preloved shops in Marylebone offer some of the best vintage finds in London.

With less savvy shoppers to compete with than the traditional stomping grounds of Notting Hill and Brixton, the stores in Marylebone offer a more minimalist and refined shopping experience.

Our favorites are Cancer Research UK and the Oxfam store , located on Marylebone High St, along with CSD , a luxury consignment store tucked away on Marylebone Lane with a treasure trove of luxury handbags, shoes and vintage ready to wear.

8. Chiltern Street

Monocole Cafe

Chiltern Street is a Marylebone-insider’s favorite thoroughfare thanks to its curated range of premium boutiques and dining establishments.

Some of the best stops along this tucked away part of Marylebone include Monocle Cafe (go early to snag one of their famous cardamom buns), Trunk Clothiers for refined menswear, and the celebrity favorite dining destination, Chiltern Firehouse .

9. Churchill War Rooms

Churchill War Rooms

If you’re wondering what to see in Marylebone as a history buff, the Churchill War Rooms is one of the highest rated activities in London , particularly if you’re particularly interested in World War II history.

As one of the five Imperial War Museums , the Churchill War Rooms were the strategic facility where British political and military leaders made many of the key military decisions made by the Allied forces during the war.

The museum also documents the life and career of Winston Churchill, providing fascinating commentary on the often lonely life of this mysterious world leader.

If you’re looking for a more in depth look at the War Rooms, consider booking the Historical Westminster Walking Tour with Churchill War Rooms .

This tour is an absolute bargain for the tour + entry to the Churchill War Rooms (basically two must-dos for the price of one).

10. St Christopher’s Place

St. Christopher's Place

When you visit Marylebone, one of the top things to do is to explore the independent boutiques and dining options in St Christopher’s Place.

This is a small labyrinth of jewellery and clothing stores, pop up galleries and skincare boutiques that are a treat to wander through and explore at your leisure.

Although it’s tucked away just behind Oxford Street, St Christopher’s Place feels decidedly more like a village and is a great place to pick up some trinkets or even just a coffee as you indulge in some relaxed window shopping and people watching.

11. Visit Selfridges

Selfridges

As one of the world’s most iconic department stores, you’ll likely have seen the impressive facade of Selfridges when visiting the Marylebone’ end of Oxford Street.

Even if you aren’t looking to shop, it’s definitely worth spending an hour or so browsing the incredible displays, luxury concessions and cafes that make up this world class department store.

If you have a few hours to while away, there’s also a luxury cinema and games arcade open for visitors to enjoy.

Once you’ve perused the upper floors, make your way back down to the Selfridges Foodhall on the ground floor to pick up some gourmet treats, including self-serve mochi or delicious giant chocolate chip cookies.

12. Marylebone Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

If you happen to be visiting Marylebone on a Sunday morning, you should make your way over to Moxton Street, tucked just behind the High St to sample delicious and fresh goodies at the Marylebone Farmers’ Market.

Stalls at this local market include farmers showcasing their seasonal produce and artisanal producers offering various homemade goodies, such as honey, soaps and sauces.

The market runs from 10am to 2pm and is a great chance to sample locally sourced British goods and pick up some treats or souvenirs.

13. La Cucina Caldesi

La Cucina Caldesi

Marylebone is known for its excellent food scene and La Cucina Caldesi is a highly rated local institution allowing guests to try their hand at cooking authentic and delicious Italian food in a cosy and relaxed setting.

The cooking school offers a number of different courses, targeted at various levels of expertise, but one of the most popular is their one day pasta workshop, where you’ll learn to make a selection of pastas and eat your creation over generous servings of wine.

For fans of good food and cooking, a visit to La Culcina Caldesi is one of the best things to do during your visit to Marylebone.

14. The Italians Wine Bar

The Italians

The Italians is a local favorite wine bar and one that is often missed by tourists due to its location, just quietly tucked off the High Street, making it refined and relaxed, yet welcoming and cosy.

Walking in on a chilly London evening, you’ll be greeted by a charming front of house team and gestured towards the plush bar stools or one of the few candle-lit tables that make up this cosy bar.

The wines are sourced from vineyards around Italy and can be accompanied by a selection of delicious small plates and mixed boards.

15. Marylebone Station

Marylebone Station

A typical guide to Marylebone may not include a visit to Marylebone Station , but if you’re interested in architecture and historical sights, you should definitely make a quick stop at this impressively designed local landmark.

Hidden away in the back streets of Marylebone, this beautiful station has a number of cafes and offers connections to other places of interest, including Oxford, Birmingham and Bicester Village.

You won’t need much time here, but it’s definitely a worthwhile photo stop to include in your visit to Marylebone.

Jikoni describes itself as a ‘no borders kitchen’, a reference to its globally inspired menu, and the eclectic and comforting decor that makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into an intimate and warm dining room.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

The Top 10 Things to Do in Marylebone, London

The posh neighborhood of Marylebone has a local village feel, especially on its trendy High Street, which features boutique and chain shops, as well as restaurants and pubs. The photogenic area, just south of Regent's Park, is known as the home of popular tourist attractions like Madame Tussauds London and The Sherlock Holmes Museum, but there's a lot more to see and do nearby. Because of its central location near Bond Street and Oxford Circus, Marylebone is a great place to explore for a day during a visit to London, or even make your home base during a trip.

Dine at Chiltern Firehouse

 Courtesy of Chiltern Firehouse

Half-restaurant and half-boutique hotel, Chiltern Firehouse is the place to see and be seen in Marylebone. Built into a historic fire station, the chic spot is known as the haunt of celebrities like Kate Moss and Orlando Bloom. The restaurant, run by chef Nuno Mendes, serves three meals a day, plus a dynamite weekend brunch. Visitors who aren't movie stars can score a table, but it's best to book lunch or early dinner during the week well in advance if you want to indulge in signature dishes like black truffle steak tartare and rib-eye steak. The hotel features 26 rooms and suites with contemporary decor and high-end amenities (although the nightly rates are not for those on a budget).

Peruse Daunt Books

Courtesy of Daunt Books

Located on Marylebone High Street, Daunt Books is an independent bookshop catering to travelers (as well as those just looking for a good read). It's open daily and sells books and maps, as well as children's books. There are several locations around London and many, including the Marylebone outpost, host author talks, and events regularly. It's especially great for travel guides and gifts to take back home after your visit to London.

Visit Madame Tussauds London

You may not be able to catch a glimpse of the Queen while in London. Still, you can see her wax figurine at Madame Tussauds London, a massive collection of more than 250 wax statues of celebrities and iconic figures, including the royal family. The museum is typically jam-packed, and it's known for having extremely long lines, particularly on the weekend, so be sure to book a ticket in advance. Consider buying a "Fast Track" ticket, which allows visitors to bypass the line through a dedicated entrance.

Line Up for The Sherlock Holmes Museum

Sherlock Holmes may be a fictional literary character, but the detective still has his own museum on Baker Street. In the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock lived at 221b Baker Street, which is where you'll find this collection of exhibits based on his life and work. It's a great spot for fans to immerse themselves in the character or purchase a few Sherlock-themed souvenirs. Arrive early or visit during the week since there is a continuous line outside (and tickets cannot be purchased in advance).

Grab a Pint at the Barley Mow

Marylebone features several classic pubs, but The Barley Mow, on Dorset Street, is known as the longest-standing pub in the neighborhood. Established in 1790, the pub has a local, historical feel and serves up an array of beer, wine, and spirits. The food menu is a selection of pies from the award-winning Pieminister Pies (which are worth a taste when visiting London), and the pub also puts on pub quizzes and a darts league. Note that children are allowed in pubs to dine only, and adults must accompany them.

Visit the Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection is a free art museum located in Hertford House in Manchester Square, and it's a great way to experience London's art in a less crowded setting. The collection features paintings, sculptures, furniture and arms and armor, and new temporary exhibitions are showcased every few months. While the collection is smaller than other museums around the city, it still features famous works by artists like Rembrandt, Rubens, and Canaletto. The museum is open daily with free highlight tours in the afternoon. There are also frequently activities for families and children.

See a Concert at Wigmore Hall

Take in a chamber music concert at Wigmore Hall, a Victorian concert venue that is over 115 years old. The venue focuses on great musical works in general, presenting pieces that span from the Renaissance to today. Wigmore Hall, which seats an intimate audience of 552 guests, puts on over 460 concerts per year, so there's something on every day. If traveling with young ones, look for the Hall's family concerts and special family days, which cater specifically to kids interested in music. It's recommended to book online in advance, but you can also turn up at the box office on the day of an event.

Shop the Marylebone Farmers Market

London has a lot of outdoor markets, but Marylebone Farmers Market is one of the best. Located on Aybrook Street, the market runs every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It features around 40 stalls of produce, dairy, meat, and other delicious goods, as well as prepared food—the Potato Shop is the most popular of all the booths. It's nice for a stroll or to grab lunch on the go. If you're planning to shop, be sure to bring along a reusable bag or two.

Brunch at Caravan Fitzrovia

 Courtesy of Caravan

Nestled on Great Portland Street, a few blocks away from Marylebone High Street, visitors can find one of London's best brunch spots. Caravan Fitzrovia, a coffee roastery and restaurants that boasts several locations around town, is perfect for weekend brunch, a relaxed evening meal, or just a quick coffee and croissant. The creative menu is ever-evolving, but there's something for everyone, even picky eaters, and unlike some of the other locations, this one takes bookings all day. It's perfect for a pick-me-up after a morning of sight-seeing (or as a way to fuel up before heading out).

Relax at the Monocle Café London

Courtesy of Monocle Café

This cozy coffee shop and cafe on Chiltern Street is a hidden gem, especially if you're the sort of traveler who prefers to find a local spot over a chain. They serve globally-inspired dishes like a chicken katsu sandwich and a Lingonberry chia pot, as well as cocktails, beer, wine, and coffee, and tea. Happy hour runs daily until 5:30 p.m., in case you need to kill some time in the afternoon, and the cafe is an excellent place to sit and read (including the latest issue of Monocle itself). Bear in mind that it's not particularly conducive to young kids or larger groups.

Marylebone has been a fashionable area in London since at least the seventeenth century – as its catalogue of famous residents (past and present) attests. Today it’s a world-famous shopping destination. Skip Oxford Street and instead amble along the much quieter and elegant Marylebone High Street, home to the famous Daunt Books. The area is also a first-class eating and drinking destination, from the world famous Chiltern Firehouse to newcomers like Bar Termini Centrale – the perfect spot for negroni fans. There are also a handful of attractions in this neck of the woods, including Madame Tussauds, the Sherlock Holmes Museum and the fascinating Wallace Collection. Mostly, though, people come here to wander the gorgeous Georgian streets and soak up the classy vibes. Now, isn’t that just as refined as it gets.  RECOMMENDED: Our London area guides.

12 Of The Best Things To Do In Marylebone While You’re Meandering Around

From diving into the magical world of Sherlock Holmes to wandering around Regent’s Park, here’s our pick of the best things to do in Marylebone.

Samuel Hopkins

Just to the North of Europe’s busiest shopping street – AKA Oxford Street – lies Marylebone, a villagey -style borough which is characterised by chic restaurants , pretty side streets, indie boutique stores and cosy gastropubs . There’s plenty to see and do here, so without further ado, here’s our roundup of 12 of the best things to do in Marylebone:

1. Discover the eclectic art of The Wallace Collection

The interior of the The Wallace Collection museum, one of the best things to do in Marylebone

Kicking off this roundup of the best things to do in Marylebone is The Wallace Collection – a magnificent London house museum established back in 1897 which showcases exceptional 18th century paintings, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and exquisite suits of armour too.

Free to enter, a visit here is a great idea to while away the hours. Wander through 28 different exhibition rooms and stumble upon a whole host of opulent artworks. It’s also just a hop, skip and a jump from Oxford Street.

📍Y ou’ll find The Wallace Collection at Hertford House, Manchester Square, London, W1U 3BN.

2. Play a cracking game of golf at Swingers

People playing crazy golf at Swingers near Oxford Circus

This multi-million pound course is a real joy to take a putt on – sorry. Taking over a vast former department store, Swingers offers a luxurious nine-hole course along with street food from some of London’s best vendors, such as Patty & Bun and Breddos Tacos.

It’s very la-di-da for a golf course , although due to the free-flowing cocktails (which can be caddied directly to the hole you’re currently tackling), strictly for adults only. Sign us up!

📍You’ll find Swingers at 15 John Prince’s Street, London, W1G 0AB.

3. Delve into the intriguing world of Sherlock Holmes and Watson

The exterior of the famous Sherlock Holmes Museum, one of the best things to do in Marylebone

Another solid addition to our roundup of the best things to do in Marylebone here – the world’s first museum dedicated to the legendary literary character Sherlock Holmes. Situated on 221b Baker Street, one of the world’s most famous addresses, you’ll be able to take a step back in time and enter into a world of Victorian curiosities as you unearth many of the objects, letters and characters right from the detective’s most famous cases.

From handcrafted hats to beautifully-bound books, you’ll discover a treasure trove of hidden gems here, so this Marylebone museum is well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Speaking of Sherlock Holmes, if you’re looking for a bit of fun on an immersive experience , then don’t miss out on Sherlock: The Official Live Game .

📍You’ll find The Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221b Baker Street, London, NW1 6XE.

4. Find some hidden gems at Church Street Market

The sign outside Church Street Market in Marylebone and Church Street Market

Looking for some antiques but not sure where to head? Well, you could do worse than making your way to Church Street Market. Packed full of produce – from clothing, to accessories and household goods to vintage jewellery – it’s also home to some quite frankly excellent antique stores where you’ll be able to find all manner of trinkets.

If you’re feeling peckish, you could also make your way to Marylebone Farmers Market. One of the capital’s flagship farmer’s markets , there’s always something new to find as the seasons change here, from the freshest asparagus in April to strawberries in May. Look out for excellent meat and poultry, game in season and free range sausages from local butchers and producers. It opens only on Sundays from 10am-2pm.

📍You’ll find Church Street Market at NW8 8DT and Marylebone Farmers Market at W1U 4DF.

5. Shop ‘til you drop in the area’s designer stores

Glamorous boutique stores on Bond Street close to Marylebone

Keeping on the shopping theme here, Marylebone is also a great neighbourhood to head to if you’ve got a bit of the old cash to splash. Celebrated for its elegant stores, designer fashion brands, art galleries , fine jewellery shops and antique stores , Bond Street is the destination for luxury shopping .

It marks the Southern border of Marylebone and is full to the brim with designer boutiques and stores, including Asprey, Cartier, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Asprey and Tiffany & Co. Oh we say!

6. Tuck into plates of pasta and more at Lina Stores

A selection of delicious antipasti and food served at the new Lina Stores in Marylebone

The latest instalment of Lina Stores swung open its doors earlier this year in the fashionable area of Marylebone Village, and it features a spacious all-day restaurant, a fully-stocked delicatessen and a cosy, downstairs bar.

Standouts on the menu include the ‘stracciatella ravioli’ – with datterini tomatoes, pine nuts and basil – and the ‘tagliolini al tartufo’ – a heavenly mix of 30-egg yolk tagliolini, black truffle, creamy butter and rich parmigiano reggiano. Finish up with a salted caramel chocolate mousse and a glass of dessert vino and you’ve got yourself a real winner here.

📍You’ll find Lina Stores at 13-15 Marylebone Lane, London, W1U 2NE.

7. Grab a pint or two in a traditional boozer

The bright red exterior of the Golden Eagle pub in Marylebone

Us Londoners love ourselves a good old boozer, and luckily for you dear reader, there are more than enough to whet your whistle in this neck of the woods. If you’re looking for a traditional Victorian watering hole, make your way to the Golden Eagle or The Carpenters Arms – which is tucked just behind Marble Arch and is home to the London branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).

For something a bit more bougie, head to ‘The Marylebone’ (prizes for imaginative names there), The Grazing Goat or The Harcourt. And if it’s history you’re after, then pull up a pew in The Barley Mow which has been open since 1791.

8. Amble through leafy Regent’s Park

An aerial view of the famous Regent's Park in Central London

Named after the Prince Regent (AKA King George IV) – whose nickname was *ahem* ‘the playboy prince’ – Regent’s Park is a lovely, Grade I-listed Royal Park which is home to Central London’s largest outdoor sports area, a boating lake, an outdoor theatre and leafy gardens with over 12,000 roses to boot.

It’s also home to the ZSL London Zoo – the world’s oldest scientific zoo – so you can see if you can spot the resident lions, painted dogs, giraffes, camels and penguins as you go for a wander. If you fancy a nice view, make your way to the summit of Primrose Hill – which holds the title of being the most scenic view in London .

9. Dine among magnificent palm trees at The Landmark London

The palm tree-laden Winter Garden restaurant at The Landmark London Hotel

If Kew Gardens and Buckingham Palace had a love child together, it might look a little something like the Winter Garden restaurant at The Landmark London Hotel. B oasting a towering glass dome roof that dwarfs even the majestic palm trees here, the dining area of this five-star Marylebone hotel will quite literally stop you in your tracks.

You can opt to dine on a three-course or a la carte menu, with options including roasted rack of Cumbrian lamb, seared potato terrine and native lobster thermidor – oh darling! As you’d expect in this glamorous spot, the wine and cocktail list are pretty damn extensive, and there’s even a live pianist soundtracking your evening. Date night perhaps?!

📍You’ll find The Landmark London at 222 Marylebone Road, London, NW1 6JQ.

10. Catch a classical gig at Wigmore Hall

The outside side entrance of Wigmore Hall in Marylebone

Considered to have one of the best acoustics for classical music in the whole of Europe, Wigmore Hall is quite possibly the place to go in town if you’re looking to catch a classical gig.

With a capacity of around 550, it’s a spacious place whose focus is on great musical works – from the Renaissance to contemporary jazz and new commissions from today’s most exciting composers. Check out their listings page for further information – it’ll be a magical night that you won’t likely forget in a hurry.

📍You’ll find Wigmore Hall at 36 Wigmore Street, London, W1U 2BP.

11. Savour the flavours of Peru at Pachamama Bar & Kitchen

View this post on Instagram

Taking its name from an ‘earth mother’ goddess revered by the indigenous peoples of the Andes, Pachamama Bar & Kitchen is all about fab Peruvian food using the best of British ingredients.

Standouts on the menu include the seafood platter – which incorporates grilled prawns, octopus, squid, scallops, sea bass fillet, roasted lemon, sourdough and Mediterranean butter – the Peruvian fried chicken and the charred sweet potato with flavoursome ají panca butter. Wash it down with a pisco sour and gorge on some churros and you’ll practically find yourself in heaven on ‘earth’. Sorry… They even do a bottomless brunch here too – and you know how much we love one of them.

📍You’ll find Pachamama Bar & Kitchen at 18 Thayer Street, London, W1U 3JY.

12. While away the hours reading at Daunt Books

The interior of the famous Daunt Books in Central London

Rounding off this list of the best things to do in Marylebone is Daunt Books – a picture-perfect bookshop that’s designed for those with a real case of the travel bug. Housed in a former Edwardian bookshop built in 1910—which is believed to be the world’s first custom-built bookshop—the building flaunts some bloody gorgeous skylights and long oak galleries.

It was bought by James Daunt in 1990 and specialises in travel books and literature. All books are arranged by destination, so be prepared to feel some wanderlust! They also regularly have talks and lectures here too – Tracy Chevalier and Mick Herron are just two of the authors who have recently spoken.

📍You’ll find Daunt Books at 84 Marylebone High Street, W1U 4QW.

8 Things To Do In London’s Marylebone Neighborhood

  • Destinations
  • United Kingdom

London can be overwhelming, even if you know the city well — too many people, too spread out, and too loud. But there are ways to escape the hustle and bustle and discover a London that is tranquil, village-like and full of residents rather than groups of tourists. All it takes is a step in the right direction.

As you walk along Oxford Street, dodging shoppers, find the large H&M store not far from the Bond Street station. You’ll see an entrance to a tiny alleyway between H&M and the next shop. Walk down it, and you’ll arrive at Saint Christopher’s Place, a courtyard brimming with boutiques, art galleries, and cafes. Stroll along until you reach Wigmore Street, cross it, turn right, and immediately turn left onto Marylebone Lane. Welcome to the neighborhood of Marylebone: a village within the city, only a few steps — but a million miles — away from stressful London. It’s a gorgeous quarter to explore.

I must admit that this is one place I always visit when I am in London. The atmosphere is hard to beat, and the little restaurants and shops are superb.

Here are eight great things to do in London’s charming Marylebone neighborhood.

Daunt Books in Marylebone.

1. Make Travel Plans At Daunt Books

Daunt Books is the bookstore for travelers. Not only is the inside simply gorgeous with its arches, grand stained glass window, and wooden stairs leading up to a mezzanine floor, but the offerings are fantastic. Choose a city or a country, and you’ll find a wide selection of travel books, novels set in that destination, plus maps and other guides — by the time you leave here, you’ll be well prepared for your next trip! The staff members are very knowledgeable and can offer recommendations for what to read next.

If you buy a certain number of books, you’ll get a lovely tote bag. The bags come in a variety of sizes, from tiny to heavy-duty, and they’re all emblazoned with the store’s iconic shopfront. But you can also buy a bag, should you not want to carry too many books on your travels.

2. Hunt For Treasures At Alfies Antique Market

Is there anything better than browsing an antique shop for a bargain? Alfies Antique Market , a 10-minute walk from Marylebone High Street, contains several floors full of treasures. Located in a former department store, the market offers antiquities, quirky 1960s interior decor items, vintage clothing, glassware, jewelry, and art. You could spend hours taking it all in and searching for that one special piece worth taking home. When you’re ready for a break, you can stop in at the market’s cafe — it has a lovely roof terrace.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking for more shopping opportunities, head to the Church Street Market, which sprawls along the street in front of Alfies every day except Sunday. You’ll find cheap and colorful clothing, street food, fresh produce, and more.

The Wallace Collection in Marylebone.

3. Catch The Old Masters At The Wallace Collection

Located in a luxurious townhouse just off of Marylebone High Street, the Wallace Collection is like a who’s who of Old Masters. Rubens, Rembrandt, Titian, Canaletto, Velasquez, Gainsborough, and Turner are all represented.

The private collection and mansion were bequeathed by Lady Julie-Amelie-Charlotte Castelnau Wallace, the widow of Sir Richard Wallace, who set about collecting works by the Old Masters after the French Revolution and is said to have snapped up paintings before anybody even dreamed that the artists would become so famous. The museum also features some fine furniture and interior decor, all assembled over the years by collectors who evidently had a good eye for very special pieces.

Pro Tip: Several times a month, the Wallace Collection offers workshops and special glimpses into certain artistic styles or eras. Most of these events are free, but you’ll need to book early to reserve your space.

Coco Momo in Marylebone.

4. Enjoy A Fish Finger Sandwich At Coco Momo

Every time I’m in London, I make time to pop into Coco Momo for either a drink, breakfast, or lunch. The old corner building oozes charm, the staff members are friendly, and the people-watching is perfect. And I haven’t even gotten to the food!

For breakfast, I love the scrambled eggs with sourdough toast and wild mushrooms on the side. For lunch, it doesn’t get better than the oh-so-English fish finger sandwich (for grown-ups): two large pieces of battered fish on an open piece of ciabatta, a side salad… perfection.

Pro Tip: There is an extremely Instagram-worthy view of two red telephone boxes through one of the windows. It always makes me smile — and it’s a hit on social media!

5. Browse The Boutiques And Charity Shops

One of the joys of this neighborhood is the shopping — mostly independent shops, a lot of British designers, and all small stores. Try Emma Bridgewater for the cutest crockery, The Conran Shop for superb interior decor ideas, and Cath Kidston for all things floral.

Then there are the charity shops. This is an upscale residential neighborhood, and when the women give their once-worn clothes to charity, you can sometimes pick up a real bargain. Try Cancer Research UK and Oxfam (which also has a superb book section). If you are a connoisseur of vintage clothing, make an appointment at William Vintage , where you can get exclusive and very special old clothes and costumes — for a price.

Don’t forget to investigate the side streets, such as Chiltern Lane, Marylebone Lane, and others, as there are many places to discover there.

Pro Tip: Pop into Waitrose , a lovely supermarket, to pick up some items for the next idea on this list.

A fountain Regent's Park.

6. Explore Regent’s Park

Henry VIII used to go hunting in Regent’s Park before the city swallowed it up. While it is no longer the countryside, the park still provides a breath of fresh air.

Regent’s Park, formerly known as Marylebone Park, is home to the London Zoo, a rose garden with some 30,000 roses in 400 varieties, a lake, an annual art fair, an open-air theater, and a canal. Take time to stroll and enjoy the surroundings.

If it’s a nice day, consider bringing a picnic. But whether you decide on a picnic for yourselves or not, do bring some raw nuts for the abundant squirrels. They’ll come running over to you and will take the nuts right out of your hand, making for the perfect photo opportunity.

Pro Tip: Have a look at Saint John’s Lodge in the park. It is the private residence of the royal family of Brunei and is the UK’s most expensive private residence, sold in the 1990s for a reported $52 million. The garden is open to the public.

Inside the Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone.

Chiltern Firehouse

7. Dine In An Old Fire Station

If you are in London for a special occasion or would just like to eat somewhere a little fancier, try the Chiltern Firehouse , which has long been one of London’s favorite restaurants. Set in an old fire station, the space has been transformed into a grand brasserie-style restaurant where the rich and famous go to see and be seen. But that should not put you off, as it is a special place where you can enjoy a Michelin-starred meal from an eclectic menu.

If you want to enjoy a special dinner on a certain day, make sure to book well in advance, as it can be difficult to secure a table.

The Sherlock Holmes Museum in Marylebone.

LTerlecka / Shutterstock

8. Channel Your Inner Sherlock Holmes

Marylebone was where the intrepid detective Sherlock Holmes lived — at 2251B Baker Street. Today there is a rather popular museum in his name at that address.

Of course, Holmes is a fictional character, but walking around Marylebone, you could easily forget that. A statue in his honor stands on Marylebone Road; the wax museum Madame Tussauds just around the corner exhibits a selection of the nearly 50 actors who have portrayed the sleuth on stage, television, and film; and on Devonshire Place, you’ll find the house where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote his detective stories.

Pro Tip: If you are a fan, visit the Sherlock Holmes Public House & Restaurant , where there are plenty of Holmes-themed items on display and the pub food is surprisingly good. Alas, it is not in Marylebone, but about a 20-minute walk away in the direction of Trafalgar Square.

Marylebone High Street

Marylebone High Street is a shopping street in London, running sub-parallel to Baker Street and terminating at its northern end at the junction with Marylebone Road.

Marylebone High Street

The street’s remote location has earned it the sobriquet “the hidden wonder of the West End,” and in 2002, BBC Radio 4 listeners voted it “best street in London,” remarking that it was a haven amid the frantic city.

Marylebone Village

Marylebone Village is one of London’s most distinctive and atmospheric shopping destinations.

It’s a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, yet it has a distinct personality. It offers a variety of shopping, dining, and leisure options in a picturesque setting with period architecture and lovely parks surrounding it.

Marylebone High Street runs through the center of the village, a flourishing area of shops, restaurants, and cafés that includes some of the neighborhood’s most well-known names.

Marylebone Farmer’s Market

The last thing you’d expect to find sandwiched between Marylebone’s high-end shopping areas is a farm market. And that, perhaps, is why this market has managed to avoid being nearly entirely overrun by tourists.

Marylebone Farmers Market

You’ll encounter a heterogeneous mix of posh grannies, culinary students, and everybody in between — the majority of them living in the neighborhood. It’s easy to see why this market has been so popular for almost two decades.

Marylebone Farmers Market London

You’ll find small farmers, bakers, butchers, cooks, and fishmongers serving up some of the freshest produce around London. Enjoy the iconic mushroom sandwiches at the Mushroom Table, sample organic fermented foods at PaMa, or buy a mature block of Quicke’s Cheddar.

London Marylebone Farmers Market

A variety of culinary delights are available, including fresh flowers, baked goods and snacks, organic fruits and veggies, and even soup. The range of meats on offer, such as salt marsh lamb, pheasant, and partridge, will no doubt inspire a full-fledged Sunday dinner.

Take a Butchery Class at Ginger Pig

How about an activity you’ve never thought to do? Yes, I am suggesting that you take a butchery class – vegans stay away!

If you’ve ever been curious about different cuts of meat and how to do it, the Ginger Pig invites you for a curated night of butchery. The butchery classes take place on-site every night of the week, where you can learn every trick of the trade.

Apart from the classes, people line up daily to get their hands on a piece of Ginger Pig’s meat produce. That’s how good their meat is.

Among the favourite selection of produce is the takeaway lunch box, which includes cuttings of rump steak, sausage, chicken, and pulled pork.

Many have raved about the Butcher’s spicy lamb sausage rolls, so make sure to give it a try to understand the hype. You can find the sausage rolls and more at their Borough Market stall. So even if you’re not keen on the butchering process, why not give their meat a taste?

You’ll get to see more of the town of Oxford too, cobblestone squares, a library, a theatre, and other historic sites.

Most people find this part of the tour a bit slow-paced and can’t wait to hop on the Hogwarts express. Think I’m joking? You can board the Hogwarts Express at platform 9-¾, then take off and immerse yourself fully into the Harry Potter universe.

Sip a Cocktail at the Be At One on Oxford Street

Sip on a sweet or spicy cocktail in a buzzing atmosphere on one of London’s busiest streets.

You can find the famous street in West End London, in the City of Westminster. Oxford street hosts many bars and pubs, but the Be At One is thee one for cocktail lovers.

This cocktail bar is an excellent option for anyone who wants to start their night on a sweet note. Excellent music, friendly chattering, and speedy staff keep the drinks and conversation flowing – it’s no wonder the place has a majority of five-star ratings on TripAdvisor.

You can choose from over 100 cocktails. For a sweet taste, you will love the Pantera Rosa, or enjoy a “Kiss From A Rosé” drink. And I suggest you get “Into the thick of it” for an “Absolut Gangster” time – yes, these are actual cocktails on the menu. Who knows, you might become a “pink-drink” convert.

Can you believe that Amy Winehouse spent some of her younger days working at one of the stalls? That’s not all; Camden Market has drawn the likes of Naomi Campbell, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Sir Paul McCartney.

The Camden Market is a place that every kind of person can enjoy, so expect to be awed by the craftsmanship, buzzing atmosphere, and delicious eateries. Getting here from Marylebone is no fuss at all as it will take you a couple of minutes via public transport.

Let the Science Museum Fill You With Wonder

If you identify as a science geek, then visit one of South Kensington’s top tourist attractions, the Science Museum. The museum was founded in 1857 and gave visitors a peer into humanity’s most incredible innovations.

You can time travel back to the Ancient Greek civilisation and learn about their wisdom. Or travel to the future to discover visionary ideas about our planet and cosmos. Other topics to learn about include Stephen Hawking, genetics, mathematics, and Antarctica.
