We took Balmy Day Cruises out of Boothbay to Monhegan Island, and it was an absolutely lovely experience. We ordered both our outbound and return tickets online ($23 per person per leg of the trip, so for two people - after fees - it was close to $100), showed up to collect them at about 9:15, and got in the queue (I'd strongly recommend showing up even earlier than we did: the best seats are on the top of the boat, and they fill up very quickly). The whole process was super easy! The boat is for passengers only, departing Pier 8 at 9:30am and arriving back around 4:15/4:30pm. The boat ride is about 1 1/2 hours each way. At 2pm they offer a trip around Monhegan Island (it's $5 per person, cash only) that offers spectacular views of the entire circumference of the island; it's narrated with local history and nature facts (actually most of the boat ride to and from is), and when we went the captain also brought us over to Duck Rocks to see dozens and dozens of seals sunbathing. We also saw harbor porpoises on the ride back to the mainland! There are beverages available for sale (including adult options); there are bathrooms on board, as well. The staff is friendly, incredibly safety focused, and very quick to help when there's a sick passenger (after all, you're in the open ocean of the Gulf of Maine). I didn't know what to expect, but was impressed and satisfied with the entire experience. We're already looking forward to our next trip to Monhegan which we'll do through Balmy Day (who also offer harbor tours, private charters, sailing trips, mackerel fishing, and Burnt Island Lighthouse tours... something we're also interested in now too!). What an incredible way to explore coastal Maine from the convenience of Boothbay!

Friendly, nice boats, easy-going and professional crew, and the trip to Monhegan Island is wonderful.

We had a successful fishing trip, father and 11-year old son. There are three trips per day. We went out at 10 am for a two-hour mackerel fishing trip with captain and mate as the only passengers. We saw a grey seal as we cruised out to the first fishing spot. No luck after a few minutes, so we went to spot two where the fishing action was on. Caught 10ish fish each ranging 8-12 inches and had a blast. On the way back, saw a lighthouse, porpoises, and learned about lobster fishing from the mate.

Took the boat to Monhegan Island. Great time. 1 1/2 hrs each way. The CPT offered a 30 minute Cruse around the island at 2:00. We saw dolphin and seal. Fortunately, we had extra cash with us because they failed to mention it cost an extra $5.00. I would recommend the trip.

Hospitable vee and we'll run. My sixth trip on balmy days and has been delightful each time.

What a great experience for my son. Reasonably priced. Captain and mate very friendly, engaged and knowledgeable. My son and I caught around six fish each. Just the perfect outing. Highly recommend if not looking to go out for more than two hours. Adam - NJ.

Boat ride to Monhegan was calm. Crew was great and boat clean. Not enough seating so had to stand for the entire 1.5 hours. Online info could include parking instructions for those unfamiliar with area.

Wonderful trip to Monhegan Island on Monday. Yesterday's return was a challenge. Windy and rolling seas challenged everyone. Capt and crew were terrific. Will take Balmy Day and next return to MI.

Mohegan Island

The boat ride over to Mohegan Island and back was great, Captain was very professional, as was her assistant. As for the Island itself, not so great. We have been in the past several times, but were very disappointed this time. Two eating places no longer serve lunch, the few retail stores did not have a good supply of t shirts and sweat shirts, etc.. so go if you want, but we will not be going back. Ditto for us. Excellent on boat ride over and back. As for the Island, exactly what the person above said.

Fantastic ferry ride over to Monhegan Island. We take it every year and have been happy to see Terry our captain each time. She has a pleasant voice when pointing out islands, lighthouses and interesting facts along the way. Nice crew assisting her and everything goes like clockwork. Thank you!

I took the photography cruise from 6-8 am. This was the BEST time to be out on the water. Lighting was great! Most people had lenses on their cameras that were two feet long. I had my iPhone. I thought my pictures were great. Captain Bill was able to position the boat to get the best photos. And we didn't just sail by quickly...We stayed there until everyone was satisfied, and could get the pictures that they wanted. There are drinks, (coffee, tea) and some munchies on board. Great trip. Would do it again!!!

Booked a cruise to and from Monhegan Island for an overnight stay. Clear communication at every step - booking website included plenty of details including links to parking info and information about Monhegan Island. The trip over and back was smooth and communication included both the usual safety and trip info as well as fun facts and points of interest on the trip. The boat includes both indoor and outdoor seating, restrooms, and refreshments.

After experiencing the gorgeous views of the harbor during the day and evening from the footbridge, we were eager to observe it all from sea. The one hour round trip to Squirrel Island provided the perfect introduction with its narrated excursion past beautiful summer homes, inhabited and uninhabited islands, three lighthouses and more. We saw osprey perched on its nest and heard about other boat tours offered from various piers. Most passengers sat on the open air upper deck but there is also an enclosed lower deck. I recommend one of the back row benches for plenty of leg room and easy access to stand to get that perfect picture. I loved the brief glimpse into summer life on the islands!

We were a party of 6 adults, we had a great time. Got to see a seal and dolphins on the way to the fishing spot. It was a 30 min. ride with views of the shoreline and beautiful homes. Caught mackerel and cod (all catch and release).

Monhegan can be reached from three ports in Maine: Port Clyde, New Harbor, and Boothbay Harbor. Parking for all cars is available at each port, there are no car ferries to the island.

Short-Term Parking (1-2 hour cruises) – Street parking may be available depending on what time of day it is. Most spots are located away from the center of town.

Long-Term and Overnight Parking – If you plan on spending more time in the downtown area, taking a more extended boat excursion, or staying overnight on Monhegan , explore your parking options below. Please note: Not all parking lots offer overnight parking. If you are spending the night or multiple nights on Monhegan Island, you must make parking arrangements ahead of time.
